We study null rays propagation in a spacetime of static Schwarzschild--Tangherlini black holes in arbitrary number of dimensions. We focus on the bending angle and the retarded time delay for rays emitted in the vicinity of a black hole and propagating to the infinity. We obtain an analytic expression in terms of elementary functions which approximate the bending angle and time delay in these spacetimes with high accuracy. We analyze the relative error of the developed analytic approximations and show that it is quite small in the complete domain of the parameter space for the rays reaching the infinity and for different number of the spacetime dimensions. Possible applications of the obtained results are briefly discussed.
This paper presents the analytical solution of the inverse ray tracing problem for photons emitted by a star and collected by an observer located in the gravitational field of the Solar System. This solution has been conceived to suit the accuracy achievable by the ESA Gaia satellite (launched on December 19, 2013) consistently with the measurement protocol in General relativity adopted within the RAMOD framework. Aim of this study is to provide a general relativistic tool for the science exploitation of such a revolutionary mission, whose main goal is to trace back star directions from within…
In this work, we discuss the improvement that the joint network of LISA and Taiji could provide on exploring two kinds of black hole formation mechanisms. For astrophysical origin, we consider light seed and heavy seed scenarios, and generate populations accordingly. We find that the joint network has the potential to observe growing light seeds in the range 15 < z < 20, while single detector can hardly see, which would shed light on the light seeding mechanism. For the heavy seeds, the joint network only improves the signal-to-noise ratio. For primordial origin, we calculate the event rate at…
The possibility that a black hole could tunnel into a white hole has recently received attention. Here we present a metric that improves the 'firework' metric: it describes the entire process and solves the Einstein equations everywhere except on a small transition surface that corresponds to the quantum tunnelling. We compute the corresponding ray-tracing map from past infinity to future infinity explicitly.
We describe a new numerical algorithm for ray tracing in the external spacetimes of spinning compact objects characterized by arbitrary quadrupole moments. Such spacetimes describe non-Kerr vacuum solutions that can be used to test the no-hair theorem in conjunction with observations of accreting black holes. They are also appropriate for neutron stars with spin frequencies in the 300-600 Hz range, which are typical of the bursting sources in low-mass X-ray binaries. We use our algorithm to show that allowing for the quadrupole moment of the spacetime to take arbitrary values leads to observab…
In this letter first we show that the equation of null geodesics in spherically symmetric spacetimes in isotropic coordinates is identical to the equation of light ray trajectories in isotropic media in flat spacetime. Based on this analogy we introduce an exact simulation of the light ray trajectories both in these spacetimes and in their metamaterial analogs in terms of the spacetime index of refraction. As unstable light trajectories, the photon spheres form in these metamaterial analogs at {\it exactly} the same radial distances as expected from the corresponding black hole geometries. Usi…
We in this paper investigate the formation and evolution of primordial black holes (PBHs) in nonsingular bouncing cosmologies. We discuss the formation of PBH in the contracting phase and calculate the PBH abundance as a function of the sound speed and Hubble parameter. Afterwards, by taking into account the subsequent PBH evolution during the bouncing phase, we derive the density of PBHs and their Hawking radiation. Our analysis shows that nonsingular bounce models can be constrained from the backreaction of PBHs.
The self-lensing of a massive black hole binary (MBHB), which occurs when the two BHs are aligned close to the line of sight, is expected to produce periodic, short-duration flares. Here we study the shapes of self-lensing flares (SLFs) via general-relativistic ray tracing in a superimposed binary BH metric, in which the emission is generated by geometrically thin accretion flows around each component. The suite of models covers eccentric binary orbits, black hole spins, unequal mass binaries, and different emission model geometries. We explore the above parameter space, and report how the lig…
Violating Lorentz-invariance, and so implicitly permitting some form of superluminal communication, necessarily alters the notion of a black hole. Nevertheless, in both Einstein-Æther gravity, and Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, there is still a causally disconnected region in black-hole solutions; now being bounded by a "Universal horizon", which traps excitations of arbitrarily high velocities. To better understand the nature of these black holes, and their Universal horizons, we study ray trajectories in these spacetimes. We find evidence that Hawking radiation is associated with the Universal hor…
We present an implementation of a ray tracing code in the Schwarzschild metric. We aim at building a numerical code with a correct implementation of both special (aberration, amplification, Doppler) and general (deflection of light, lensing, gravitational redshift) relativistic effects so as to simulate what an observer with arbitrary velocity would see near, or possibly within, the black hole. We also pay some specific attention to perform a satisfactory rendering of stars. Using this code, we then show several unexplored features of the maximal analytical extension of the metric. In particul…
In this work, we study the shadow of Born-Infeld (BI) black holes with magnetic monopoles and Schwarzschild black holes immersed in the BI uniform magnetic field. Illuminated by a celestial sphere, black hole images are obtained by using the backward ray-tracing method. For magnetically charged BI black holes, we find that the shadow radius increases with the increase of nonlinear electromagnetics effects. For Schwarzschild black holes immersed in the BI uniform magnetic field, photons tend to move towards the axis of symmetric, resulting in stretched shadows along the equatorial plane.

The superradiant stability of higher dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. We extend an analytical method developed by one of the authors in the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases to non-extremal cases. Using the new analytical method, we revisit four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole case and obtain that four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is superradiantly stable, which is consistent with results in previous works. We then analytically prove that the five-dimensional Reissner-Nor…
We review the papers [1-3]. We discuss possibilities of studying the quasi-normal modes of black holes that are not known in an analytical form. Such black holes appear as solutions in various theoretical models and real astrophysical approximations when one takes into account the black hole neighborhood.

The spontaneous scalarization of Schwarzscild-AdS is investigated in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss--Bonnet (ESGB) theory. Firstly, we construct scalarized AdS black holes numerically. Secondly, making use of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), we obtain analytical approximate solutions for scalarized AdS black holes in the ESGB theory. It is found that scalarized AdS black holes constructed numerically are consistent with analytical approximate solutions in the whole space.
The radiation observed in quasars and active galactic nuclei is mainly produced by a relativistic plasma orbiting close to the black hole event horizon, where strong gravitational effects are relevant. The observational data of such systems can be compared with theoretical models to infer the black hole and plasma properties. In the comparison process, ray tracing algorithms are essential to computing the trajectories followed by the photons from the source to our telescopes. In this paper, we present OSIRIS: a new stable FORTRAN code capable of efficiently computing null geodesics around comp…
Perturbations in a draining vortex can be described analytically in terms of confluent Heun functions. In the context of analogue models of gravity in ideal fluids, we investigate analytically the absorption length of waves in a draining bathtub, a rotating black hole analogue, using confluent Heun functions. We compare our analytical results with the corresponding numerical ones, obtaining excellent agreement.
It is recently shown that, besides the Schwarzshcild black hole solution, there exist also scalarized black hole solutions in some Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories. In this paper, we construct analytical expressions for the metric functions and scalar field configurations for these scalarized black hole solutions approximately by employing the continued fraction parametrization method and investigate their thermodynamic stability. It is found that the horizon entropy of a scalarized black hole is always smaller than that of a Schwarzschild black hole, which indicates that these scalarized…
We develop an analytical formalism for studying optical analogues of spherically symmetric black-hole spacetimes. We demonstrate the exact similarity between the electromagnetic wave equations in an inhomogeneous medium in flat spacetime and those in a general-relativistic curved spacetime respectively. The permittivity and the permeability of an inhomogeneous optical medium act as metric components of the analogue spacetime. Manifest properties of black holes like curved light trajectories follow directly from our formalism. Other black-hole phenomena like quasinormal modes can also be studie…
Gauss-Bonnet gravity provides one of the most promising frameworks to study curvature corrections to the Einstein action in supersymmetric string theories, while avoiding ghosts and keeping second order field equations. Although Schwarzschild-type solutions for Gauss-Bonnet black holes have been known for long, the Kerr-Gauss-Bonnet metric is missing. In this paper, a five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet approximation is analytically derived for spinning black holes and the related thermodynamical properties are briefly outlined.
Cosmic expansion influences the angular size of black hole shadow. The most general way to describe a black hole embedded into an expanding universe is to use the McVittie metric. So far, the exact analytical solution for the shadow size in the McVittie metric, valid for arbitrary law of expansion and arbitrary position of the observer, has not been found. In this paper, we present the first analytical solution for angular size of black hole shadow in McVittie metric as seen by observer comoving with the cosmic expansion. We use a method of matched asymptotic expansions to find approximate sol…
The superradiant stability of asymptotically flat D-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes under charged massive scalar perturbation is analytically studied. Recently, an analytical method has been proposed by the author and used to prove that five and six-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes are superradiantly stable under charged massive scalar perturbation. We apply this analytical method in the D-dimensional extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole cases and prove that the D-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black holes are all superradiantly stable under charged mas…
We review the analytical solution methods for the geodesic equations in Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT-de Sitter spacetimes and its subclasses in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic functions. A short guide to corresponding literature for general timelike and lightlike motion is also presented.
We study the photon's motion around a black hole in the presence of a plasma whose density is a function of the radius coordinate by a renewed ray-tracing algorithm and investigate the influence of the plasma on the shadow of the black hole. The presence of plasma affects not only the size but also the shape of black hole shadow. Furthermore, the influence of plasma on trajectories of photons depends on the frequency of photon. For the high-frequency photons, the influence is negligible, on the contrary, the trajectories of low-frequency photons is affected significantly by the plasma. Interes…
In this paper, we consider the timelike and null geodesics around the static [GMGHS (Gibbons, Maeda, Garfinkle, Horowitz and Strominger), magnetically charged GMGHS, electrically charged GMGHS] and the rotating (Kerr-Sen dilaton-axion) dilaton black holes. The geodesic equations are solved in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions. To classify the trajectories around the black holes, we use the analytical solution and effective potential techniques and then characterize the different types of the resulting orbits in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum. Also, using the obtained …
The ``moving puncture'' technique has led to dramatic advancements in the numerical simulations of binary black holes. Hannam et.al. have recently demonstrated that, for suitable gauge conditions commonly employed in moving puncture simulations, the evolution of a single black hole leads to a well-known time-independent, maximal slicing of Schwarzschild. They construct the corresponding solution in isotropic coordinates numerically and demonstrate its usefulness, for example for testing and calibrating numerical codes that employ moving puncture techniques. In this Brief Report we point out th…
GYOTO, a general relativistic ray-tracing code, is presented. It aims at computing images of astronomical bodies in the vicinity of compact objects, as well as trajectories of massive bodies in relativistic environments. This code is capable of integrating the null and timelike geodesic equations not only in the Kerr metric, but also in any metric computed numerically within the 3+1 formalism of general relativity. Simulated images and spectra have been computed for a variety of astronomical targets, such as a moving star or a toroidal accretion structure. The underlying code is open source an…
Motivated by possible observations of the black hole candidate in the center of our galaxy and the galaxy M87, ray-tracing methods are applied to both standard General Relativity (GR) and a recently proposed extension, the pseudo-complex General Relativity (pc-GR). The correction terms due to the investigated pc-GR model lead to slower orbital motions close to massive objects. Also the concept of an innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) is modified for the pc-GR model, allowing particles to get closer to the central object for most values of the spin parameter $a$ than in GR. Thus, the accret…
Light bending by the strong gravity around the black hole will form the so-called black hole shadow, the shape of which can shed light on the structure of the near-horizon geometry to possibly reveal novel physics of strong gravity and black hole. In this work, we adopt both analytical and ray-tracing methods to study the black hole shadow in the presence of the infrared structure of gravity theory, which manifests the asymptotic symmetries of spacetime as the supertranslation soft hairs of the black hole. Though the black hole metrics with and without the soft hair are related by large gauge …

We present Arcmancer, a publicly available general ray-tracing and tensor algebra library, written in C++ and providing a Python interface. Arcmancer supports Riemannian and semi-Riemannian spaces of any dimension and metric, and has novel features such as support for multiple simultaneous coordinate charts, embedded geometric shapes, local coordinate systems and automatic parallel propagation. The Arcmancer interface is extensively documente…
We develop a systematic ray-tracing method which can be used to explore a wide class of higher-dimensional multi-center black objects through the shape of their shadows. As a proof of principle, we test our method by imaging black holes and black rings in five dimensions. Two-dimensional slices of the three-dimensional shadows of those five-dimensional black objects not only show new phenomena, such as the first image of a toroidal horizon, but also offer a new viewpoint on black holes and binary systems in four dimensions.

Supermassive black hole (BH) binaries are thought to produce self-lensing flares (SLF) when the two BHs are aligned with the line-of-sight. If the binary orbit is observed nearly edge-on, we find a distinct feature in the light curve imprinted by the BH shadow from the lensed BH. We study this feature by ray-tracing in a binary model and predict that 1\% of the current binary candidates could show this feature. Our BH tomography method proposed here could make it possible to extract BH shadows that are spatially unresolvable by high-resolution VLBI.
We give an analytical formula for the vacuum polarization of a massless minimally coupled scalar field at the horizon of a rotating black hole with subtracted geometry. This is the first example of an exact, analytical result for a four-dimensional rotating black hole.
Given the insight steming from string theory, the origin of the black-hole (BH) information puzzle is traced back to the assumption that it is physically meaningful to trace out the density matrix over negative-frequency Hawking particles. Instead, treating them as virtual particles necessarily absorbed by the BH in a manner consistent with the laws of BH thermodynamics, and tracing out the density matrix only over physical BH states, the complete evaporation becomes compatible with unitarity.
We consider the equivalence of quasinormal modes and geodesic quantities recently brought back due to the black hole shadow observation by Event Horizon Telescope. Using WKB method we found an analytical relation between the real part of quasinormal frequencies at the eikonal limit and black hole shadow radius. We verify this correspondence with two black hole families in $4$ and $D$ dimensions, respectively.
Here we construct approximate analytical forms for the metric coefficients and fields representing the scalarized Einstein-Maxwell black holes with various couplings of the scalar field, once the parameters of the system are fixed. By increasing approximation order, one can obtain the analytic representation with any desired accuracy, what was tested via calculations of shadows for these black holes by using approximate analytical and accurate numerical metric functions. We share the Mathematica code which allows one to find an appropriate analytical form of the metric for any couplings and va…

We present an analytical study of superradiant instability of rotating asymptotically Gödel black hole (Kerr-Gödel black hole) in five-dimensional minimal supergravity theory. By employing the matched asymptotic expansion method to solve Klein-Gordon equation of scalar field perturbation, we show that the complex parts of quasinormal frequencies are positive in the regime of superradiance. This implies the growing instability of superradiant modes. The reason for this kind of instability is the Dirichlet boundary condition at asymptotic infinity, which is similar to that of rotating black hole…
