We continue the discussion of the fermion models on graphs that started in the first paper of the series. Here we introduce a Graphical Gauge Model (GGM) and show that : (a) it can be stated as an average/sum of a determinant defined on the graph over $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ (binary) gauge field; (b) it is equivalent to the Monomer-Dimer (MD) model on the graph; (c) the partition function of the model allows an explicit expression in terms of a series over disjoint directed cycles, where each term is a product of local contributions along the cycle and the determinant of a matrix defined on the remainder of the graph (excluding the cycle). We also establish a relation between the MD model on the graph and the determinant series, discussed in the first paper, however, considered using simple non-Belief-Propagation choice of the gauge. We conclude with a discussion of possible analytic and algorithmic consequences of these results, as well as related questions and challenges.
Independent random monomer activities are considered on a mean-feld monomer-dimer model. Under very general conditions on the randomness the model is shown to have a self-averaging pressure density that obeys a solvable variational principle. The dimer density is exactly computed in the thermodynamic limit and shown to be a smooth function.
The number of monomers, in a monomer-dimer mean-field model with an attractive potential, fluctuates according to the central limit theorem when the parameters are outside the critical curve. At the critical point the model belongs to the same universality class of the mean-field ferromagnet. Along the critical curve the monomer and dimer phases coexist.
In the past few years we have derived asymptotic expansions for lambda_d of the dimer problem and lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem. The many expansions so far computed are collected herein. We shine a light on results in two dimensions inspired by the work of M. E. Fisher. Much of the work reported here was joint with Shmuel Friedland.
The author and Shmuel Friedland recently presented an expression for lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem involving a power series in p . Herein I present a simple way to derive this expression for lambda_d(p) from the Mayer (or Virial) series of a dimer gas. The derivation is an exercise in basic statistical mechanics. We expect the relationship to be very useful.

We solve the monomer-dimer problem on a non-bipartite lattice, the simple quartic lattice with cylindrical boundary conditions, with a single monomer residing on the boundary. Due to the non-bipartite nature of the lattice, the well-known method of a Temperley bijection of solving single-monomer problems cannot be used. In this paper we derive the solution by mapping the problem onto one on close-packed dimers on a related lattice. Finite-size analysis of the solution is carried out. We find from asymptotic expansions of the free energy that the central charge in the logarithmic conformal fiel…
We consider a monomer-dimer system with a strong attractive dimer-dimer interaction that favors alignment. In 1979, Heilmann and Lieb conjectured that this model should exhibit a nematic liquid crystal phase, in which the dimers are mostly aligned, but do not manifest any translational order. We prove this conjecture for large dimer activity and strong interactions. The proof follows a Pirogov-Sinai scheme, in which we map the dimer model to a system of hard-core polymers whose partition function is computed using a convergent cluster expansion.
We consider the monomer-dimer partition function on arbitrary finite planar graphs and arbitrary monomer and dimer weights, with the restriction that the only non-zero monomer weights are those on the boundary. We prove a Pfaffian formula for the corresponding partition function. As a consequence of this result, multipoint boundary monomer correlation functions at close packing are shown to satisfy fermionic statistics. Our proof is based on the celebrated Kasteleyn theorem, combined with a theorem on Pfaffians proved by one of the authors, and a careful labeling and directing procedure of the…
Using the tensor network approach, we investigate the monomer-dimer models on a checkerboard lattice, in which there are interactions (with strength $ν$) between the parallel dimers on half of the plaquettes. For the fully packed interacting dimer model, we observe a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition between the lowtemperature symmetry breaking and the high-temperature critical phases; for the doped monomer-dimer casewith finite chemical potential $μ$, we also find an order-disorder phase transition which is of second order instead. We use the boundary matrix product state approach to detect…
We present an application of the Grassmann algebra to the problem of the monomer-dimer statistics on a two-dimensional square lattice. The exact partition function, or total number of possible configurations, of a system of dimers with a finite set of n monomers with fixed positions can be expressed via a quadratic fermionic theory. We give an answer in terms of a product of two pfaffians and the solution is closely related to the Kasteleyn result of the pure dimer problem. Correlation functions are in agreement with previous results, both for monomers on the boundary, where a simple exact exp…
A collection of rigorous results for a class of mean-field monomer-dimer models is presented. It includes a Gaussian representation for the partition function that is shown to considerably simplify the proofs. The solutions of the quenched diluted case and the random monomer case are explained. The presence of the attractive component of the Van der Waals potential is considered and the coexistence phase coexistence transition analysed. In particular the breakdown of the central limit theorem is illustrated at the critical point where a non Gaussian, quartic exponential distribution is found f…
We solve the classical square-lattice dimer model with periodic boundaries and in the presence of a field $\boldsymbol{t}$ that couples to the (vector) flux, by diagonalizing a modified version of Lieb's transfer matrix. After deriving the torus partition function in the thermodynamic limit, we show how the configuration space divides into 'topological sectors' corresponding to distinct values of the flux. Additionally, we demonstrate in general that expectation values are $\boldsymbol{t}$-independent at leading order, and obtain explicit expressions for dimer occupation numbers, dimer-dimer c…
Shmuel Friedland and the author recently presented a formal expansion for lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem. Herein we prove that if the terms in the expansion are rearranged as a power series in p, then for sufficiently small p this series converges.
In a recent paper S. Friedland and the author presented a formal expression for lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem on a d-dimensional rectangular lattice, which involved a power series in p. Herein, we find simlar expressions for lambda_tri(p) and lambda_hex(p), the entropy per site for triangular and hexagonal lattices.
We study critical behavior in the classical cubic dimer model (CDM) in the presence of a finite density of monomers. With attractive interactions between parallel dimers, the monomer-free CDM exhibits an unconventional transition from a Coulomb phase to a dimer crystal. Monomers acts as charges (or monopoles) in the Coulomb phase and, at nonzero density, lead to a standard Landau-type transition. We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study the system in the neighborhood of the critical point, and find results in agreement with detailed predictions of scaling theory. Going beyond previo…
The finite volume correction for a mean-field monomer-dimer system with an attractive interaction are computed for the pressure density, the monomer density and the susceptibility. The results are obtained by introducing a two-dimensional integral representation for the partition function decoupling both the hard-core interaction and the attractive one. The next-to-leading terms for each of the mentioned quantities is explicitly derived as well as the value of their sign that is related to their monotonic convergence in the thermodynamic limit.
Let (lambda_d)(p) be the p monomer-dimer entropy on the d-dimensional integer lattice Z^d, where p in [0,1] is the dimer density. We give upper and lower bounds for (lambda_d)(p) in terms of expressions involving (lambda_(d-1))(q). The upper bound is based on a conjecture claiming that the p monomer-dimer entropy of an infinite subset of Z^d is bounded above by (lambda_d)(p). We compute the first three terms in the formal asymptotic expansion of (lambda_d)(p) in powers of 1/d. We prove that the lower asymptotic matching conjecture is satisfied for (lambda_d)(p).
It is evidenced that effective lattice-gas models of hard-core monomers and dimers afford a proper description of low-temperature features of spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond and octahedral chains. Besides monomeric particles assigned within the localized-magnon theory to bound one- and two-magnon eigenstates, the effective monomer-dimer lattice-gas model additionally includes dimeric particles assigned to a singlet-tetramer (singlet-hexamer) state as a cornerstone of dimer-tetramer (tetramer-hexamer) ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg diamond (octahedral) chain. A feasibility of the effective d…
The inverse problem method is tested for a class of monomer-dimer statistical mechanics models that contain also an attractive potential and display a mean-field critical point at a boundary of a coexistence line. The inversion is obtained by analytically identifying the parameters in terms of the correlation functions and via the maximum-likelihood method. The precision is tested in the whole phase space and, when close to the coexistence line, the algorithm is used together with a clustering method to take care of the underlying possible ambiguity of the inversion.
We study a monomer-dimer mixture defined on a honeycomb lattice as a toy model for the spin ice system in a magnetic field. In a low-doping region of monomers, the effective description of this system is given by the dual sine-Gordon model. In intermediate- and strong-doping regions, the Potts lattice gas theory can be employed. Synthesizing these results, we construct a renormalization-group flow diagram, which includes the stable and unstable fixed points corresponding to ${\cal M}_5$ and ${\cal M}_6$ in the minimal models of the conformal field theory. We perform numerical transfer-matrix c…
In this work, we investigate the classical loop models doped with monomers and dimers on a square lattice, whose partition function can be expressed as a tensor network (TN). In the thermodynamic limit, we use the boundary matrix product state technique to contract the partition function TN, and determine the thermodynamic properties with high accuracy. In this monomer-dimer-loop model, we find a second-order phase transition between a trivial monomer-condensation and a loop-condensation (LC) phases, which can not be distinguished by any local order parameter, while nevertheless the two phases…
In a recent paper S. Friedland and the author presented a formal expression for Lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem in d dimensions involving a power series in p. We there presented the result of computations for the terms in the power series through the sixth power. I herein present the result for the seventh power term, in d = 2. An interesting feature of the new computation is that it would have been impossible without a new algorithm for computation of the Tutte polynomial, by Bjorklund, Husfeldt, Kaski, and Koivisto.
We present a numerical study on an interacting monomer-dimer model with nearest neighbor repulsion on a square lattice, which possesses two symmetric absorbing states. The model is observed to exhibit two nearby continuous transitions: the $Z_2$ symmetry-breaking order-disorder transition and the absorbing transition with directed percolation criticality. We find that the symmetry-breaking transition shows a non-Ising critical behavior, and that the absorbing phase becomes critical, in the sense that the critical decay of the dimer density observed at the absorbing transition persists even wit…
We consider an "elastic" version of the statistical mechanical monomer-dimer problem on the n-dimensional integer lattice. Our setting includes the classical "rigid" formulation as a special case and extends it by allowing each dimer to consist of particles at arbitrarily distant sites of the lattice, with the energy of interaction between the particles in a dimer depending on their relative position. We reduce the free energy of the elastic dimer-monomer (EDM) system per lattice site in the thermodynamic limit to the moment Lyapunov exponent (MLE) of a homogeneous Gaussian random field (GRF) …
Intractable enumeration problems are like Russian nesting dolls: structural properties of monomer-dimer coverings on two-dimensional quadratic lattices
Recently an expansion as a power series in 1/d has been presented for the specific entropy of a complete dimer covering of a d-dimensional hypercubic lattice. This paper extends from 3 to 10 the number of terms known in the series. Likewise an expansion for the entropy, dependent on the dimer-density p, of a monomer-dimer system, involving a sum sum_k a_k(d) p^k, has been recently offered. We herein extend the number of the known expansion coefficients from 6 to 20 for the hyper-cubic lattices of general dimension d and from 6 to 24 for the hyper-cubic lattices of dimensions d < 5 . We show th…
We study the order-disorder transition of the two dimensional interacting monomer-dimer model (IMD) which has two symmetric absorbing states. To be self-contained, we first estimate numerically the dynamic exponent $z$ of the two dimensional Ising model. From the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization at the critical point, we obtain $β/(νz) = 0.057~650(12)$, or $z = 2.168 26(45)$, where $β= \frac{1}{8}$ and $ν=1$ are exactly known exponents. We, then, compare the critical relaxation of the order parameter at the transition point of the IMD with that of the Ising model. We found that the cri…
We study the classical dimer model on rhombic Penrose tilings, whose edges and vertices may be identified with those of a bipartite graph. We find that Penrose tilings do not admit perfect matchings (defect-free dimer coverings). Instead, their maximum matchings have a monomer density of $81-50φ\approx 0.098$ in the thermodynamic limit, with $φ=\left(1+\sqrt{5}\right)/2$ the golden ratio. Maximum matchings divide the tiling into a fractal of nested closed regions bounded by loops that cannot be crossed by monomers. These loops connect second-nearest neighbour even-valence vertices, each of whi…
Thermodynamic properties of the macroscopically degenerate tetramer-dimer phase of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice
In this work, some classical results of the pfaffian theory of the dimer model based on the work of Kasteleyn, Fisher and Temperley are introduced in a fermionic framework. Then we shall detail the bosonic formulation of the model {\it via} the so-called height mapping and the nature of boundary conditions is unravelled. The complete and detailed fermionic solution of the dimer model on the square lattice with an arbitrary number of monomers is presented, and finite size effect analysis is performed to study surface and corner effects, leading to the extrapolation of the central charge of the …
We study various statistical properties of the double-dimer model, a generalization of the dimer model, on rectangular domains of the square lattice. We take advantage of the Grassmannian representation of the dimer model, first to calculate the probability distribution of the number of nontrivial loops around a cylinder, which is consistent with the previously known result, and then to calculate the expectation value of the number of loops surrounding two faces and the left-passage probability, both in the discrete and the continuum cases. We also briefly explain the calculation of some relat…
A monomer-dimer model with a short-range attractive interaction favoring colinear dimers is considered on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Although our choice of the chemical potentials results in more horizontal than vertical dimers, the horizontal dimers have no long-range traslational order - in agreement with the Heilmann-Lieb conjecture.
We introduce and study three-dimensional quantum dimer models with positive resonance terms. We demonstrate that their ground state wave functions exhibit a nonlocal sign structure that can be exactly formulated in terms of loops, and as a direct consequence, monomer excitations obey Fermi statistics. The sign structure and Fermi statistics in these "signful" quantum dimer models can be naturally described by a parton construction, which becomes exact at the solvable point.
Quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg trimerized chain with strong intradimer and weak monomer-dimer coupling constants is studied using the novel many-body perturbation expansion, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain preserving correlations between all interacting spins of the trimerized chain unlike the standard perturbation scheme developed on the grounds of noninteracting spin monomers and dimers. The Heisenberg trimerized chain shows the intermediate one-third plateau, which was also observed in the magnetization curve of the polymeric…
