The dynamics of fluctuations is considered for electrons near a positive ion or for charges in a confining trap. The stationary nonuniform equilibrium densities are discussed and contrasted. The linear response function for small perturbations of this nonuniform state is calculated from a linear Markov kinetic theory whose generator for the dynamics is exact in the short time limit. The kinetic equation is solved in terms of an effective mean field single particle dynamics determined by the local density and dynamical screening by a dielectric function for the non-uniform system. The autocorrelation function for the total force on the charges is discussed.
For confined systems of identical particles, either bosons or fermions, we argue that the parabolic nature of the confinement potential is a prerequisite for the non-dissipative character of the center of mass response to a uniform probe. For an excitation in a parabolic confining potential, the half width of the density response function depends nevertheless quantitatively on properties of the internal degrees of freedom, as is illustrated here for an ideal confined gas of identical particles with harmonic interparticle interactions.
We study heat conduction in a system of hard disks confined to a narrow two dimensional channel. The system is initially in a high density solid-like phase. We study, through nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, the dependence of the heat current on an externally applied elongational strain. The strain leads to deformation and failure of the solid and we find that the changes in internal structure can lead to very sharp changes in the heat current. A simple free-volume type calculation of the heat current in a finite hard-disk system is proposed. This reproduces some qualitative feat…
A linear response framework is set up for the evaluation of collective excitations in a confined vapour of interacting Bose atoms at finite temperature. Focusing on the currently relevant case of contact interactions between the atoms, the theory is developed within a random phase approximation with exchange. This approach is naturally introduced in a two-fluid description by expressing the density response of both the condensate and the non-condensate in terms of the response of a Hartree-Fock reference gas to the selfconsistent Hartree-Fock potentials. Such an approximate account of correlat…
Configurations of a single semiflexible polymer is studied when it is pushed into a nanochannel in the case where the polymer persistence length $l_p$ is much longer than the channel diameter $D$, i.e. $l_p/D \gg 1$. Using numerical simulations, we show that the polymer undergoes a sequence of recurring structural transitions upon longitudinal compression, i.e. random deflection along the channel, helix going around the channel wall, double-fold random deflection, double-fold helix, etc. We find that the helix transition can be understood as buckling of deflection segments, and the initial hel…
We study the escape problem for interacting, self-propelled particles confined to a disc, where particles can exit through one open slot on the circumference. Within a minimal 2D Vicsek model, we numerically study the statistics of escape events when the self-propelled particles can be in a flocking state. We show that while an exponential survival probability is characteristic for non-interaction self-propelled particles at all times, the interacting particles have an initial exponential phase crossing over to a sub-exponential late-time behavior. We propose a new phenomenological model based…
Two basic correlation functions are calculated for a model of $N$ harmonically interacting identical particles in a parabolic potential well. The density and the pair correlation function of the model are investigated for the boson case. The dependence of these static response properties on the complete range of the temperature and of the number of particles is obtained. The calculation technique is based on the path integral approach of symmetrized density matrices for identical particles in a parabolic confining well.
We evaluate analytically some ground state properties of two-dimensional harmonically confined Fermi vapors with isotropy and for an arbitrary number of closed shells. We first derive a differential form of the virial theorem and an expression for the kinetic energy density in terms of the fermion particle density and its low-order derivatives. These results allow an explicit differential equation to be obtained for the particle density. The equation is third-order, linear and homogeneous. We also obtain a relation between the turning points of kinetic energy and particle densities, and an exp…
With the integral representation of Bose functions, the Bose-Einstein condensation of non-interacting bosons in a three-dimensional harmonic trap was studied. The relation between the particle number and its phase transition temperature was clarified. Some next-order terms in the thermodynamic expansions were obtained. We plotted the chemical potential, the mean energy, and the specific heat and found most of these properties obtained by using the integral representation were almost identical with those of the series representation of Bose functions.
We propose a new method for the evaluation of the particle density and kinetic pressure profiles in inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems of non-interacting fermions, and apply it to harmonically confined systems of up to N=1000 fermions. The method invokes a Green's function operator in coordinate space, which is handled by techniques originally developed for the calculation of the density of single-particle states from Green's functions in the energy domain. In contrast to the Thomas-Fermi (local density) approximation, the exact profiles under harmonic confinement show negative local pressu…
We develop a trap-size scaling theory for trapped particle systems at quantum transitions. As a theoretical laboratory, we consider a quantum XY chain in an external transverse field acting as a trap for the spinless fermions of its quadratic Hamiltonian representation. We discuss trap-size scaling at the Mott insulator to superfluid transition in the Bose-Hubbard model. We present exact and accurate numerical results for the XY chain and for the low-density Mott transition in the hard-core limit of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Our results are relevant for systems of cold atomic gas…
Motivated by the simple models of molecular motor obeying a linear force-velocity relation, we have studied the stochastic dynamics of a Brownian particle in the presence of a linear velocity dependent force, $f_s(1-\frac{v}{v_0})$ where $f_{s}$ is a constant. The position and velocity auto correlation functions in different situations of the dynamics are calculated exactly. We observed that the velocity auto correlation function shows an exponentially decaying behaviour with time and saturates to a constant value in the time asymptotic limit, for a fixed $f_s$. It attains saturation faster wi…
We consider the statistics of volume fluctuations in a one-dimensional classical gas of non-interacting particles confined by a piston, and subjected to an arbitrary external potential. We show that despite the absence of interactions between particles, volume fluctuations of the gas are non-Gaussian, and are described by generalized extreme value distributions. The continuous shape parameter of these distributions is related to the ratio between the force acting on the piston, and the force acting on the particles. Gaussian fluctuations are recovered in the strong compression limit, when the …
The directional transport of finite size self-propelled Brownian particles confined in a 2D zigzag channel with colored noise is investigated. The noises(noise parallel to x-axis and y-axis), the asymmetry parameter Δk, the ratio f(ratio of the particle radius and the bottleneck half width), the selfpropelled speed v0 have joint effect on the particles. The average velocity of self-propelled particles is significantly different from passive particles. The average velocity exhibits complicated behavior with increasing self-propelled speed v0
We discuss two-dimensional diffusion of a Brownian particle confined to a periodic asymmetric channel with soft walls modeled by a parabolic potential. In the channel, the particle experiences different noise intensities, or temperatures, in the transversal and longitudinal directions. The model is inspired by the famous Feynman's ratchet and pawl. Using ideas of the Fick-Jacobs approximation we derive the mean velocity of the particle, the effective diffusion coefficient, and the stationary probability density in the potential unit cell. The derived results are exact for small channel width. …
For a fermion gas with equally spaced energy levels, the density and the pair correlation function are obtained. The derivation is based on the path integral approach for identical particles and the inversion of the generating functions for both static responses. The density and the pair correlation function are evaluated explicitly in the ground state of a confined fermion system with a number of particles ranging from 1 to 220 and filling the Fermi level completely.
The transport of self-propelled particle confined in corrugated channel with Lévy noise is investigated. The parameters of Lévy noise(i.e., the stability index, the asymmetry parameter, the scale parameter, the location parameter) and the parameters of confined corrugated channel(i.e., the compartment length, the channel width and the bottleneck size) have joint effects on the system. There exits flow reverse phenomena with increasing mean parameter. Left distribution noise will induce $-x$ directional transport and right distribution noise will induce $+x$ directional transport. The distribut…
We analyze the rectified motion of a Brownian particle in a confined environment. We show the emergence of strong cooperativity between the inherent rectification of the ratchet mechanism and the entropic bias of the fluctuations caused by spatial confinement. Net particle transport may develop even in situations where separately the ratchet and the geometric restrictions do not give rise to particle motion. The combined rectification effects can lead to bidirectional transport depending on particle size, resulting in a new route for segregation. The reported mechanism can be used to control t…
Describing the diffusion of particles through crowded, confined environments with which they can interact is of considerable biological and technological interest. Under conditions where the confinement dimensions become comparable to the particle dimensions, steric interactions between particles, as well as particle-wall interactions, will play a crucial role in determining transport properties. To elucidate the effects of these interactions on particle transport, we consider the diffusion and binding of finite-size particles within a channel whose diameter is comparable to the size of the pa…
We investigate the dynamics of a tagged particle embedded in a strongly interacting confined liquid enclosed between two opposing flat walls. Using the Zwanzig-Mori projection operator formalism we obtain an equation of motion for the incoherent scattering function suitably generalized to account for the lack of translational symmetry. We close the equations of motion by a self-consistent mode-coupling ansatz. The interaction of the tracer with the surrounding liquid is encoded in generalized direct correlation functions. We extract the in-plane dynamics and provide a microscopic expression fo…
Despite their fundamentally non-equilibrium nature, the individual and collective behavior of active systems with polar propulsion and isotropic interactions (polar-isotropic active systems) are remarkably well captured by equilibrium mapping techniques. Here we examine two signatures of equilibrium systems -- the existence of a local free energy function and the independence of the coarse- grained behavior on the details of the microscopic dynamics -- in polar-isotropic active particles confined by hard walls of arbitrary geometry at the one-particle level. We find that boundaries that posses…
We study analytically the dynamics and the micro-structural changes of a host medium caused by a driven tracer particle moving in a confined, quiescent molecular crowding environment. Imitating typical settings of active micro-rheology experiments, we consider here a minimal model comprising a geometrically confined lattice system -- a two-dimensional strip-like or a three-dimensional capillary-like -- populated by two types of hard-core particles with stochastic dynamics -- a tracer particle driven by a constant external force and bath particles moving completely at random. Resorting to a dec…
We derive an analytic expression for the mechanical pressure of a generic one-dimensional model of confined active Brownian particles (ABPs) that is valid for all values of Peclet number Pe and all confining scenarios. Our model reproduces the known scaling of bulk pressure with Pe^2 while in strong confinement pressure scales with Pe. Our analytic results are very well reproduced by simulations of ABPs in 2D. We use the pressure formula to calculate both the work performed by an active engine and its efficiency. In particular, efficiency is maximized for work cycles with finite period and not…
We investigate the influence of an external magnetic field (torque) on the motion of Brownian particles confined in a channel geometry with varying width. Furthermore, the particles are driven by random fluctuations modeled by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process (OUP) with given correlation time $τ_c$. The latter is implemented as both a thermal and a nonthermal process. In contrast to the thermal OUP for the nonthermal process directed transport emerges, i.e. our setup now realizes a ratchet mechanism: Due to the assumed thermodynamic nonequilibrium situation random fluctuations are rectified. The…
We present numerical results for the tagged-particle dynamics by solving the mode-coupling theory in confined geometry for colloidal liquids (cMCT). We show that neither the microscopic dynamics nor the type of intermediate scattering function qualitatively changes the asymptotic dynamics in vicinity of the glass transition. In particular, we find similar characteristics of confinement in the low-frequency susceptibility spectrum which we interpret as footprints of parallel relaxation. We derive predictions for the localization length and the scaling of the diffusion coefficient in the superco…
We present a simple and systematic procedure to determine the effective dynamics of a Brownian particle coupled to a rapidly fluctuating correlated medium, modeled as a scalar Gaussian field, under spatial confinement. The method allows us, in particular, to address the case in which the fluctuations of the medium are suppressed in the vicinity of the particle, as described by a quadratic coupling in the underlying Hamiltonian. As a consequence of the confinement of the correlated medium, the resulting effective Fokker-Planck equation features spatially dependent drift and diffusion coefficien…
The persistent character of the motion of active particles gives rise to accumulation at boundaries. I investigate the problem of run-and-tumble swimmers confined in a 1D box with hard walls, reporting expressions for the particles probability distribution and wall pressure. A crossover box length value is found below which the initial value of the pressure turns out to be higher than the asymptotic one, indicating a bounce effect of the active "wave" of swimmers. The case of attracting and repelling boundaries are also investigated using two different tumble rates for particles in the bulk an…
We consider the one-dimensional motion of a particle randomly accelerated by Gaussian white noise on the line segment 0<x<1. The reflections of the particle from the boundaries at x=0 and 1 are inelastic, with coefficient of restitution r. We have solved the Fokker-Planck equation satisfied by the equilibrium distribution function P(x,v) with a combination of exact analytical and numerical methods. Throughout the interval 0<r<1, P(x,v) remains extended, as opposed to collapsed. The particle is not localized at the boundary. However, for r<0.163 the equilibrium boundary collision rate is infini…
We consider an overdamped run-and-tumble particle in two dimensions, with self propulsion in an orientation that stochastically rotates by 90 degrees at a constant rate, clockwise or counter-clockwise with equal probabilities. In addition, the particle is confined by an external harmonic potential of stiffness $μ$, and possibly diffuses. We find the exact time-dependent distribution $P\left(x,y,t\right)$ of the particle's position, and in particular, the steady-state distribution $P_{\text{st}}\left(x,y\right)$ that is reached in the long-time limit. We also find $P\left(x,y,t\right)$ for a "f…
The melting of a binary system of charged particles confined in a {\it quasi}-one-dimensional parabolic channel is studied through Monte Carlo simulations. At zero temperature the particles are ordered in parallel chains. The melting is anisotropic and different melting temperatures are obtained according to the spatial direction, and the different types of particles present in the system. Melting is very different for the single-, two- and four-chain configurations. A temperature induced structural phase transition is found between two different four chain ordered states which is absent in th…
We consider collective dynamics of self-propelling particles in two dimensions. They can align themselves according to the direction of propulsion of their neighbours, together with a random perturbation (i.e. rotational fluctuation). They are also interacting with each other by a soft, isotropic, excluded-volume interaction. Particles are confined in a circular trap. The steepness of the trap is tuneable. Their average packing fraction and strength of rotational fluctuation are low. When the trap is steep, particles flock along its boundary. They form polar cluster that spreads over the bound…
We study the full nonequilibirum steady state distribution $P_{\text{st}}\left(X\right)$ of the position $X$ of a damped particle confined in a harmonic trapping potential and experiencing active noise, whose correlation time $τ_c$ is assumed to be very short. Typical fluctuations of $X$ are governed by a Boltzmann distribution with an effective temperature that is found by approximating the noise as white Gaussian thermal noise. However, large deviations of $X$ are described by a non-Boltzmann steady-state distribution. We find that, in the limit $τ_c \to 0$, they display the scaling behavior…
Confined fluids display complex behavior due to layering and local packing. Here, we disentangle these effects by confining a hard-sphere fluid to the surface of a cylinder, such the circumference extends only over a few particle diameters. We compare the static structure factor and the pressure measured in computer simulations to the Percus-Yevick closure in liquid state theory. A non-monotonic evolution of the static-structure-factor peak and the pressure is observed upon variation of the confining length, similar to a liquid confined between two plates. This indicates that the density profi…
We investigate the transport of Brownian particles in a two-dimensional potential under the action of a uniform external force. The potential is periodic in one direction and confines the particle to a narrow channel of varying cross-section in the other direction. We apply the standard long-wave asymptotic analysis in the narrow dimension and show that the leading order term is equivalent to that obtained previously from a direct extension of the Fick-Jacobs approximation. We also show that the confining potential has similar effects on the transport of Brownian particles to those induced by …
We propose a minimal model, based on active Brownian particles, for the dynamics of cells confined in a two-state micropattern, composed of two rectangular boxes connected by a bridge, and investigate the transition statistics. A transition between boxes occurs when the active particle crosses the center of the bridge, and the time between subsequent transitions is the dwell time. By assuming that the rotational diffusion time $τ$ is a function of the position, the main features of the transition statistics observed experimentally are recovered. $τ$ controls the transition from a ballistic reg…
In this paper, we develop a large-$N$ field theory for a system of $N$ classical particles in one dimension at thermal equilibrium. The particles are confined by an arbitrary external potential, $V_\text{ex} (x)$, and repel each other via a class of pairwise interaction potentials $V_\text{int}(r)$ (where $r$ is distance between a pair of particles) such that $ V_\text{int} \sim |r|^{-k}$ when $r \to 0$. We consider the case where every particle is interacting with $d$ (finite range parameter) number of particles to its left and right. Due to the intricate interplay between external confinemen…
We consider a system of $N$ particles living on the noncommutative plane in the presence of a confining potential and study its thermodynamics properties. Indeed, after calculating the partition function, we determine the corresponding internal energy and heat capacity where different corrections are obtained. In analogy with the magnetic field case, we define an effective magnetization and study its susceptibility in terms of the noncommutative parameter $θ$. By introducing the chemical potential, we investigate the Bose-Einstein condensation for the present system. Different limiting cases r…
We numerically study the dynamics of run-and-tumble particles confined in two chambers connected by thin channels. Two dominant dynamical behaviors emerge: (i) an oscillatory pumping state, in which particles periodically fill the two vessels and (ii) a circulating flow state, dynamically maintaining a near constant population level in the containers when connected by two channels. We demonstrate that the oscillatory behaviour arises from the combination of a narrow channel, preventing bacteria reorientation, and a density dependent motility inside the chambers.
We investigate a two-dimensional system of active particles confined to a narrow annular domain. Despite the absence of explicit interactions among the velocities or the active forces of different particles, the system displays a transition from a disordered and stuck state to an ordered state of global collective motion where the particles rotate persistently clockwise or anticlockwise. We describe this behavior by introducing a suitable order parameter, the velocity polarization, measuring the global alignment of the particles' velocities along the tangential direction of the ring. We also m…
We re-examine the problem of the dielectric response of highly polar liquids such as water in confinement between two walls using a simple two-variable density functional theory involving number and polarisation densities. In the longitudinal polarisation case where a perturbing field is applied perpendicularly to the walls, we show that the notion of local dielectric constant, although ill-defined at a microscopic level, makes sense when a coarse-graining over the typical size of a particle is introduced. The approach makes it possible to study the effective dielectric response of thin liquid…
We use molecular dynamics computer simulations to investigate the relaxation dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow pore. We find that the average dynamics is strongly influenced by the confinement in that time correlation functions are much more stretched than in the bulk. By investigating the dynamics of the particles as a function of their distance from the wall, we can show that this stretching is due to a strong dependence of the relaxation time on this distance, i.e. that the dynamics is spatially very heterogeneous. In particular we find that the typical relaxati…
Hydrodynamic interactions between particles confined in a liquid-filled linear channel are known to be screened beyond a distance comparable to the channel width. Using a simple analytical theory and lattice-Boltzmann simulations, we show that the hydrodynamic screening is qualitatively modified when the time-dependent response and finite compressibility of the host liquid are taken into account. Diffusive compression modes in the confined liquid cause the particles to have velocity correlations of unbounded range, whose amplitude decays with time only as $t^{-3/2}$.
We study the active work fluctuations of an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in the presence of a confining harmonic potential. We tackle the problem analytically both for stationary and generic uncorrelated initial states. Our results show that harmonic confinement can induce singularities in the active work rate function, with linear stretches at large positive and negative active work, at sufficiently large active and harmonic force constants. These singularities originate from big jumps in the displacement and in the active force, occurring at the initial or ending points of trajectories…
We study an interacting system of $N$ classical particles on a line at thermal equilibrium. The particles are confined by a harmonic trap and repelling each other via pairwise interaction potential that behaves as a power law $\propto \sum_{\substack{i\neq j}}^N|x_i-x_j|^{-k}$ (with $k>-2$) of their mutual distance. This is a generalization of the well known cases of the one component plasma ($k=-1$), Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0^+$), and the Calogero-Moser model ($k=2$). Due to the competition between harmonic confinement and pairwise repulsion, the particles spread over a finite region of space …
We study the diffusive behavior of biased Brownian particles in a two dimensional confined geometry filled with the freezing obstacles. The transport properties of these particles are investigated for various values of the obstacles density $η$ and the scaling parameter $f$, which is the ratio of work done to the particles to available thermal energy. We show that, when the thermal fluctuations dominate over the external force, i.e., small $f$ regime, particles get trapped in the given environment when the system percolates at the critical obstacles density $η_c \approx 1.2$. However, as $f$ i…
