Geons, small topological structures that exhibit particle properties such as charge and angular momentum without the presence of matter sources, have been extensively discussed in 3+1-dimensional general relativity. Given the recent renewal of interest in 2+1 gravity, it is natural to ask whether or not the notion of geons extends to three dimensions. We prove here that, in contrast to the 3+1-dimensional case, there are no 2+1-dimensional asymptotically flat solutions of the vacuum Einstein or Einstein-Maxwell equations containing geons. In contrast, 2+1-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes can indeed contain geons; however, the geons are always hidden behind a single black hole horizon. We also prove sufficient conditions for the non-existence of 2+1-dimensional asymptotically flat geon-containing solutions.
Being a key ingredient of the AdS/CFT correspondence, AdS space-time is suspected to be non-linearly unstable since 2011. Even with arbitrarily small initial data, a singularity almost invariably emerges. However, some configurations allow for perfectly regular and quasi-periodic solutions. These are the so-called islands of stability. Among them, geons play the role of purely gravitational excitations of AdS space-time. In this manuscript, we tackle the problem of the numerical construction of several families of asymptotically AdS geons. We are able to definitely demonstrate the existence of…
We report on numerical constructions of fully non-linear geons in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes in four dimensions. Our approach is based on 3+1 formalism and spectral methods in a gauge combining maximal slicing and spatial harmonic coordinates. We are able to construct several families of geons seeded by different families of spherical harmonics. We can reach unprecedentedly high amplitudes, with mass of order $\sim 1/2$ of the AdS length, and with deviations of the order of 50\% compared to third order perturbative approaches. The consistency of our results with numerical r…
We prove a sharp inequality for toroidal hypersurfaces in three and four dimensional Horowitz-Myers geon. This extend previous results on Minkowski inequality in the static spacetime to toroidal surfaces in asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with flat toroidal conformal infinity.
The existence of localized, approximately stationary, lumps of the classical gravitational and electromagnetic field -- $geons$ -- was conjectured more than half a century ago. If one insists on exact stationarity, topologically trivial configurations in electro-vacuum are ruled out by no-go theorems for solitons. But stationary, asymptotically flat geons found a realization in scalar-vacuum, where everywhere non-singular, localized field lumps exist, known as (scalar) boson stars. Similar geons have subsequently been found in Einstein-Dirac theory and, more recently, in Einstein-Proca theory.…
It is well-known that the Ricci flow of a closed 3-manifold containing an essential minimal 2-sphere will fail to exist after a finite time. Conversely, the Ricci flow of a complete, rotationally symmetric, asymptotically flat manifold containing no minimal spheres is immortal. We discuss an intermediate case, that of a complete, noncompact manifold with essential minimal hypersphere. For 3-manifolds, if the scalar curvature vanishes on asymptotic ends and is bounded below initially by a negative constant (that depends on the initial area of the minimal sphere), we show that a singularity deve…
We discuss quantum properties of the single-exterior, geon-type black (and white) holes that are obtained from the Kruskal spacetime and the spinless Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli hole via a quotient construction that identifies the two exterior regions. For the four-dimensional geon, the Hartle-Hawking type state of a massless scalar field is thermal in a limited sense, but there is a discrepancy between Lorentzian and Riemannian derivations of the geon entropy. For the three-dimensional geon, the state induced for a free conformal scalar field on the conformal boundary is similarly thermal in a…
Geons are particle-like electrovacua. The concept is well-defined, but it still lacks a proper first example. Emerging as such is a self-confined exact 2-parameter pp-wave non-Dirac monopole {\cal G} with primordial Q/r^2 (r\geq r_o) field plus higher moments. {\cal G} has effective mass, independently-scaled NUT-like charge κ|Q|=2r_o as diameter, and spin. {\cal G} {\em cannot} have actual {\sc em} charge $Q$ (by \partial{\cal G}=0), Ricci-flat limits, nor spacetime or Dirac-string singularities, but Dirac's quantization condition holds. {\cal G}/2, as an upgraded `Kerr-Newman' alternative or…
We find vacuum solutions such that massive gravitons are confined in a local spacetime region by their gravitational energy in asymptotically flat spacetimes in the context of the bigravity theory. We call such self-gravitating objects massive graviton geons. The basic equations can be reduced to the Schrödinger-Poisson equations with the tensor "wavefunction" in the Newtonian limit. We obtain a non-spherically symmetric solution with $j=2,\ell=0$ as well as a spherically symmetric solution with $j=0,\ell=2$ in this system where $j$ is the total angular momentum quantum number and $\ell$ is th…
We give a complete classification of all connected isometry groups, together with their actions in the asymptotic region, in asymptotically flat, asymptotically vacuum space--times with timelike ADM four--momentum.
We discuss the unique existence, arising by analogy to that in algebraically special space-times, of a CR structure realized on null infinity for any asymptotically flat Einstein or Einstein-Maxwell space-time.
We show that the borderline cases in the proof of the positive energy theorem for initial data sets, on spin manifolds, in dimensions $n\ge 3$, are only possible for initial data arising from embeddings in Minkowski space-time.
For mathematical convenience initial data sets in numerical relativity are often taken to be conformally flat. Employing the dual-foliation formalism, we investigate the physical consequences of this assumption. Working within a large class of asymptotically flat spacetimes we show that the ADM linear momentum is governed by the leading Lorentz part of a boost even in the presence of supertranslation-like terms. Following up, we find that in spacetimes that are asymptotically flat, and admit spatial slices with vanishing linear momentum that are sufficiently close to conformal flatness, any bo…
The problem of existence of spacelike hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in asymptotically flat spacetimes is considered for a class of asymptotically Schwarzschild spacetimes satisfying an interior condition. Using a barrier construction, a proof is given of the existence of complete hypersurfaces with constant mean cuvature which intersect null infinity in a regular cut.
Using the fact that a spin connection is defined to an accuracy of a vector it is shown that the spin connection should be modified in such a manner that Dirac equation in a curve space would be compatible with Dirac equation in a flat space.
We study Killing vector fields in asymptotically flat space-times. We prove the following result, implicitly assumed in the uniqueness theory of stationary black holes. If the conditions of the rigidity part of the positive energy theorem are met, then in such space-times there are no asymptotically null Killing vector fields except if the initial data set can be embedded in Minkowski space-time. We also give a proof of the non-existence of non-singular (in an appropriate sense) asymptotically flat space-times which satisfy an energy condition and which have a null ADM four-momentum, under con…
The present work extends the application of a modified Ricci flow equation to an asymptotically non flat space, namely Marder's cylindrially symmetric space. It is found that the flow equation has a solution at least in a particular case.
We show that time-reflection symmetric, asymptotically flat, static vacuum data which admit a non-trivial conformal rescaling which leads again to such data must be axi-symmetric and admit a conformal Killing field. Moreover, it is shown that there exists a 3-parameter family of such data.
Extending the results of an earlier article we give a complete description of the asymptotically flat, conformally non-flat, static vacuum data which admit non-trivial, asymptotically smooth conformal mappings onto other such data. These data form a 3-parameter family which decomposes into 1-parameter families of data which are conformal to each other. The data and the associated static vacuum solutions are given explicitly in terms of elliptic and, in a special case, elementary functions.
We prove the existence of a large class of asymptotically flat initial data with non-vanishing mass and angular momentum for which the metric and the extrinsic curvature have asymptotic expansions at space-like infinity in terms of powers of a radial coordinate.
The principal objective of this project is to investigate the gravitational lensing by asymptotically flat black holes in the framework of Horndeski theory in weak field limits. To achieve this objective, we utilize the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to the optical geometry of asymptotically flat black holes and apply the Gibbons-Werner technique to achieve the deflection angle of photons in weak field limits. Subsequently, we manifest the influence of plasma medium on deflection of photons by asymptotically flat black holes in the context of Horndeski theory. We also examine the graphical impact of def…
The existence of symmetries in asymptotically flat space-times are studied from the point of view of initial value problems. General necessary and sufficient (implicit) conditions are given for the existence of Killing vector fields in the asymptotic characteristic and in the hyperboloidal initial value problem (both of them are formulated on the conformally compactified space-time manifold).
We construct and investigate non conformal anisotropic Bianchi type VII solutions in 5 dimensions. The solutions are asymptotically flat, but they contain a naked singularity at the origin. We also construct solutions of Einstein-Maxwell gravity using the method employed in Majumdar -Papapetrou solutions with various profiles of charged dust. In a fictitious case of negative matter density, we obtain a solution with horizon hiding the singularity.
Some recent results obtained by the author and collaborators about QFT in asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity are summarized and reviewed. In particular it is focused on the physical properties of ground states in the bulk induced by the BMS-invariant state defined at null infinity.
In this paper we continue earlier investigations of evolutionary formulations of the Einstein vacuum constraint equations originally introduced by Rácz. Motivated by the strong evidence from these works that the resulting vacuum initial data sets are generically not asymptotically flat we analyse the asymptotics of the solutions of a modified formulation by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We conclude that the vacuum initial data sets generated with this new formulation are generically asymptotically flat.
We present a method for constructing stationary, asymptotically flat, rotating solutions of Einstein's field equations. One of the spun-up solutions has quasilocal mass but no global mass. It has an ergosphere but no event horizon. The angular momentum is constant everywhere beyond the ergosphere. The energy-momentum content of this solution can be interpreted as a rotating string-fluid.
It is shown that the class of asymptotically flat solutions to the axisymmetric and stationary vacuum Einstein equations with reflection symmetry of the metric is uniquely characterized by a simple relation for the Ernst potential on the upper part of the symmetry axis. This result generalizes a well-known fact from potential theory.
By an argument similar to that of Gibbons and Stewart (1984), we show that there are no weakly-asymptotically-simple, analytic vacuum or electrovac solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic in time.
We show that certain structures defined on the complex four dimensional space known as H-Space have considerable relevance for its closely associated asymptotically flat real physical space-time. More specifically for every complex analytic curve on the H-space there is an asymptotically shear-free null geodesic congruence in the physical space-time. There are specific geometric structures that allow this world-line to be chosen in a unique canonical fashion giving it physical meaning and significance.
We study the utilization of conformal compactification within the conformal approach to solving the constraints of general relativity for asymptotically flat initial data. After a general discussion of the framework, particular attention is paid to simplifications that arise when restricting to a class of initial data which have a certain $U(1)\times U(1)$ conformal symmetry.
Asymptotically locally AdS and asymptotically flat black hole solutions are found for a particular case of the Horndeski action. The action contains the Einstein-Hilbert term with a cosmological constant, a real scalar field with a non minimal kinetic coupling given by the Einstein tensor, the minimal kinetic coupling and the Maxwell term. There is no scalar potential. The solution has two integration constants related with the mass and the electric charge. The solution is given for all dimensions. A new class of asymptotically locally flat spherically symmetric black holes is found when the m…
After motivating why the study of asymptotically flat spaces is important in loop quantum gravity, we review the extension of the standard framework of this theory to the asymptotically flat sector based on the GNS construction. In particular, we provide a general procedure for constructing new Hilbert spaces for loop quantum gravity on non-compact spatial manifolds. States in these Hilbert spaces can be interpreted as describing fluctuations around fiducial fixed backgrounds. When the backgrounds are chosen to approximate classical asymptotically flat 3-geometries this gives a natural framewo…
We report a new result on the nice section construction used in the definition of rest frame systems in general relativity. This construction is needed in the study of non trivial gravitational radiating systems. We prove existence, regularity and non-self-crossing property of solutions of the nice section equation for general asymptotically flat space times. This proves a conjecture enunciated in a previous work.
We present a new asymptotically-flat time-machine model made solely of vacuum and dust. The spacetime evolves from a regular spacelike initial hypersurface S and subsequently develops closed timelike curves. The initial hypersurface S is asymptotically flat and topologically trivial. The chronology violation occurs in a compact manner; namely the first closed causal curves form at the boundary of the future domain of dependence of a compact region in S (the core). This central core is empty, and so is the external asymptotically flat region. The intermediate region surrounding the core (the en…
We extend the work in our earlier article [4] to show that time-periodic, asymptotically-flat solutions of the Einstein equations analytic at scri, whose source is one of a range of scalar-field models, are necessarily stationary. We also show that, for some of these scalar-field sources, in stationary, asymptotically-flat solutions analytic at scri, the scalar field necessarily inherits the symmetry. To prove these results we investigate miscellaneous properties of massless and conformal scalar fields coupled to gravity, in particular Bondi mass and its loss.
We present exact spherically symmetric dyonic black hole solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with Liouville-type potentials for the dilaton field. These solutions have unusual asymptotics--they are neither asymptotically flat nor asymptotically (anti-) de Sitter. The solutions have one or two horizons hiding a curvature singularity at the origin. A class of topological dyonic black holes with topology of a torus is also presented. Some basic properties of the black holes are discussed.
In the present paper we consider the Einstein-multiple-scalar field theory. When the target space of the scalar fields is a complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature we prove that the static and asymptotically flat solutions which posses a photon sphere are uniquely specified by their asymptotic data, i.e. by their mass, scalar charges and asymptotic values of the scalar fields. The unique solution with a photon sphere and prescribed asymptotic data is explicitly constructed.
By an argument similar to that of Gibbons and Stewart, but in a different coordinate system and less restrictive gauge, we show that any weakly-asymptotically-simple, analytic vacuum or electrovacuum solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic in time are necessarily stationary.
Given a time symmetric initial data set for the vacuum Einstein field equations which is conformally flat near infinity, it is shown that the solutions to the regular finite initial value problem at spatial infinity extend smoothly through the critical sets where null infinity touches spatial infinity if and only if the initial data coincides with Schwarzschild data near infinity.
We show that static electro--vacuum black hole space--times containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non--degenerate components of the event horizon do not exist. This is done by a careful study of the near-horizon geometry of degenerate horizons, which allows us to eliminate the last restriction of the static electro-vacuum no-hair theory.
I describe the construction of a large class of asymptotically flat initial data with non-vanishing mass and angular momentum for which the metric and the extrinsic curvature have asymptotic expansions at space-like infinity in terms of powers of a radial coordinate. I emphasize the motivations and the main ideas behind the proofs.
We present an axially symmetric, asymptotically flat empty space solution of the Einstein field equations containing a naked singularity. The spacetime is regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possess a true curvature singularity. The spacetime is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme and is locally isometric to the metrics of case IV in the Kinnersley classification of type D vacuum metrics. Additionally, the spacetime also shows the evolution of closed timelike curves (CTCs) from an initial hypersurface free from CTCs.
For a spherically symmetric self-gravitating scalar field we study self similar and quasi-self similar solutions in asymptotically flat and AdS spacetimes in various dimensions. Our main approach relies on reducing the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system of equations under the self similarity assumption to a dynamical system. Applying standard techniques in the analysis of dynamical system we study the corresponding phase diagrams, gaining some insight into the short and long-term evolution of the system. In the asymptotically flat case the fixed points of the dynamical system correspond to conformal…
It is shown that there exist families of asymptotically flat solutions of the Einstein equations coupled to the Vlasov equation describing a collisionless gas which have a Newtonian limit. These are sufficiently general to confirm that for this matter model as many families of this type exist as would be expected on the basis of physical intuition. A central role in the proof is played by energy estimates in unweighted Sobolev spaces for a wave equation satisfied by the second fundamental form of a maximal foliation.
The phase space reduction of Schwarzschild black holes by Thiemann and Kastrup and by Kuchař is reexamined from a different perspective on gauge freedom. This perspective introduces additional gauge transformations which correspond to asymptotically nontrivial diffeomorphisms. Various subtleties concerning variational principles for asymptotically flat systems are addressed which allow us to avoid the usual conclusion that treating such transformations as gauge implies the vanishing of corresponding total charges. Instead, superselection rules are found for the (nonvanishing) ADM mass at the a…
We discuss whether the minimally coupled massless Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields have well defined quasinormal modes in single horizon, asymptotically flat two-dimensional black holes. To get the result we solve the equations of motion in the massless limit and we also calculate the effective potentials of Schrodinger type equations. Furthermore we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Dirac field propagating in the two-dimensional uncharged Witten black hole. We compare our results on its quasinormal frequencies with other already published.
We prove non-existence of static, vacuum, appropriately regular, asymptotically flat black hole space-times with degenerate (not necessarily connected) components of the event horizon. This finishes the classification of static, vacuum, asymptotically flat domains of outer communication in an appropriate class of space-times, showing that the domains of outer communication of the Schwarzschild black holes exhaust the space of appropriately regular black hole exteriors.
We propose a criterion for finding the minimum distance at which an interior solution of Einstein's equations can be matched with an exterior asymptotically flat solution. It is based upon the analysis of the eigenvalues of the Riemann curvature tensor and their first derivatives, implying $C^3$ differentiability conditions. The matching itself is performed by demanding continuity of the curvature eigenvalues across the matching surface. We apply the $C^3$ matching approach to spherically symmetric perfect fluid spacetimes and obtain the physically meaningful condition that density and pressur…
Einstein-Dirac equations for two spinor fields are considered. It is shown that in this case one can obtain self-consistent equations set for these gravitating spinors. The key idea to obtain Einstein-Dirac equations is to use special ansätze for spinor fields in order to zero some off-diagonal componentes of the spinor energy - momentum tensor.
We consider the question whether a static potential on an asymptotically flat 3-manifold can have nonempty zero set which extends to the infinity. We prove that this does not occur if the metric is asymptotically Schwarzschild with nonzero mass. If the asymptotic assumption is relaxed to the usual assumption under which the total mass is defined, we prove that the static potential is unique up to scaling unless the manifold is flat. We also provide some discussion concerning the rigidity of complete asymptotically flat 3-manifolds without boundary that admit a static potential.
We study the conserved charges of supersymmetric solutions in the topologically massive gravity theory for both asymptotically flat and constant curvature geometries.
The divergences of the gravitational action are analyzed for spacetimes that are asymptotically anti-de Sitter and asymptotically flat. The gravitational action is rendered finite using a local counterterm prescription, and the relation of this method to the traditional reference spacetime is discussed. For AdS, an iterative procedure is devised that determines the counterterms efficiently. For asymptotically flat space, we use a different method to derive counterterms which are sufficient to remove divergences in most cases.
Dilaton black hole solutions which are neither asymptotically flat nor (anti)-de Sitter but reduce to asymptotically flat solutions in some special limits have been known for a Liouville type dilatonic potential. It is shown how, by solving a pair of coupled differential equations, infinitesimally small angular momentum can be added to these static solutions to produce rotating black hole solutions.
We describe explicitly the large volume isoperimetric regions of a natural class of asymptotically flat manifolds, in any dimension. These isoperimetric regions detect the mass and the center of mass of such manifolds when viewed as initial data sets for the Einstein equations in general relativity. Using the positivity of the isoperimetric mass established by G. Huisken we prove an existence result for large isoperimetric regions in general asymptotically flat three manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature.
In this paper we introduce a mass for asymptotically flat manifolds by using the Gauss-Bonnet curvature. We first prove that the mass is well-defined and is a geometric invariant, if the Gauss-Bonnet curvature is integrable and the decay order $τ$ satisfies $τ> \frac {n-4}{3}.$ Then we show a positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat graphs over ${\mathbb R}^n$. Moreover we obtain also Penrose type inequalities in this case.
We report that a class of three-dimensional bimetric theories contain asymptotically flat solutions. These spacetimes can be cast in a set of asymptotic conditions at null infinity which are preserved under the infinite dimensional BMS group. Moreover, the algebra of the canonical generators exhibits a central extension. The possibility that these solutions describe regular black holes is also discussed.
