We give a progress report about the activities within the CIFIST Team related to the search for extremely metal-poor stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's spectroscopic catalog. So far the search has provided 25 candidates with metallicities around or smaller -3. For 15 candidates high resolution spectroscopy with UVES at the VLT has confirmed their extremely metal-poor status. Work is under way to extend the search to the SDSS's photometric catalog by augmenting the SDSS photometry, and by gauging the capabilities of X-shooter when going to significantly fainter targets.
We discuss the serendipitous discovery of an extremely metal poor galaxy, SDSS 0809+1729, classified as a star in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The galaxy has a redshift z = 0.0441 and a B-band absolute magnitude M_B = -17.1. With a metallicity of log(O/H)+12~7.44 or ~1/20 solar, this galaxy is among the 10 most metal poor emission-line galaxies known. SDSS 0809+1729 is a blue compact galaxy (BCG) with a stellar age of ~4.5 Myr, a star formation rate of 0.18 Msun/yr, and a large gas-phase electron density ~367/cm^3. Similar values of these parameters are common among other extremely met…
We report on efforts to identify large samples of very and extremely metal-poor stars based on medium-resolution spectroscopy and ugriz photometry obtained during the course of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and its extension, SDSS-II, which includes the program SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration. To date, over 8000 stars with [Fe/H] <= -2.0 and effective temperatures in the range 4500K < T_eff < 7000K have been found, with the expected numbers in this temperature range to be well over 10,000 once SEGUE is completed. The numbers roughly double when one incl…
We are conducting a high-resolution follow-up of candidate EMP stars extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; York et al. 2000) using UVES at the VLT. Three of the programme stars, SDSS J0912+0216, SDSS J1036+1212 and SDSS J1349-0229, where deliberately targetted as CEMP stars since a strong $G$ band was evident from the SDSS spectra and the weakness of the Ca {\sc ii} K line testified their very low metallicity. The UVES high resolution follow-up confirmed the original findings ([Fe/H] $<-2.50$) and allowed a more detailed investigation of their chemical composition. We determined t…
The chemical compositions of seven Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) turn-off stars are determined from high-resolution spectroscopy. Five of them are selected from the SDSS/SEGUE sample of metal-poor stars. The effective temperatures of these objects are all higher than 6000 K, while their metallicities, parametrized by [Fe/H], are all below -2. Six of our program objects exhibit high abundance ratios of barium ([Ba/H]> +1), suggesting large contributions of the products of former AGB companions via mass transfer across binary systems. Combining our results with previous studies provides a to…
We analyze a high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectrum of the carbon-rich, extremely metal-poor star CS29498-043, obtained with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph. We find its iron abundance is extremely low ([Fe/H] = -3.7), placing it among the few stars known with [Fe/H] < -3.5, while Mg and Si are significantly overabundant ([Mg/Fe] = +1.8, and [Si/Fe] = +1.1) compared with stars of similar metallicity without carbon excess. Overabundances of N and Al were also found. These characteristics are similar to the carbon-rich, extremely metal-poor star CS22949-037. Though the …
We present a sample of 42 high-mass low-metallicity outliers from the mass--metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies. These galaxies have stellar masses that span log(M_*/M_sun) ~9.4 to 11.1 and are offset from the mass--metallicity relation by -0.3 to -0.85 dex in 12+log(O/H). In general, they are extremely blue, have high star formation rates for their masses, and are morphologically disturbed. Tidal interactions are expected to induce large-scale gas inflow to the galaxies' central regions, and we find that these galaxies' gas-phase oxygen abundances are consistent with large quantitie…
The atmospheric parameters and iron abundance of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrophotometric standard star BD +17 4708 are critically examined using up-to-date Kurucz model atmospheres, LTE line formation calculations, and reliable atomic data. We find Teff = 6141+-50 K, log g = 3.87+-0.08, and [Fe/H]=-1.74+-0.09. The line-of-sight interstellar reddening, bolometric flux, limb-darkened angular diameter, stellar mass, and the abundances of Mg, Si, and Ca are also obtained. This star is a unique example of a moderately metal-poor star for which the effective temperature can be accurat…
(abridged) Deep multi-epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey data in a 275 square degrees area along the celestial equator (SDSS stripe 82 = S82) allowed us to search for extremely faint ($i>21$) objects with proper motions larger than 0.14 arcsec/yr. We classify 38 newly detected objects with low-resolution optical spectroscopy using FORS1 @ ESO VLT. All 22 previously known L dwarfs in S82 have been detected in our high proper motion survey. However, 11 of the known L dwarfs have smaller proper motions (0.01$<$$μ$$<$0.14 arcsec/yr). Although S82 was already one of the best investigated sky regions wi…
We present a new analysis of the abundances observed in extremely metal poor stars based on both a new generation of theoretical presupernova models and explosions of zero metallicity massive stars and a new abundance analysis of an homogeneous sample of stars having [Fe/H]<-2.5 (Cayrel et al. 2004).
We demonstrate a successful strategy for identifying extremely metal poor galaxies. Our preliminary survey of 24 candidates contains 10 metal poor galaxies of which 4 have 12+log(O/H)<7.65, some of the lowest metallicity blue compact galaxies known to date. Interestingly, our sample of metal poor galaxies have systematically lower metallicity for their luminosity than comparable samples of blue compact galaxies, dIrrs, and normal star-forming galaxies. Our metal poor galaxies share very similar properties, however, with the host galaxies of nearby long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), includi…
A significant fraction of very metal-poor stars have unexpectedly high carbon abundances. I recap on their discovery, describe the results of high-resolution spectroscopic studies of their composition, and consider possible origins. It is now clear that at least two, and possibly three different explanations are needed for their general characteristics.
We report abundance analyses of three extremely metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] $\lesssim -3$, using the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS). All are found to have sub-solar values of [Eu/Fe]. Comparison with our chemical evolution model of the Galactic halo implies the dominant source of Eu to be the low-mass end of the supernova mass range. Future studies of stars with low Eu abundances will be important to determine the r-process site.
A detailed elemental abundance analysis has been carried out for the very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.7) star BS16934-002, which was identified in our previous work as a star exhibiting large overabundances of Mg and Sc. A comparison of the abundance pattern of this star with that of the well-studied metal-poor star HD122563 indicates excesses of O, Na, Mg, Al, and Sc in BS16934-002. Of particular interest, no excess of C or N is found in this object, in contrast to CS22949-037 and CS29498-043, two previously known carbon-rich, extremely metal-poor stars with excesses of the alpha elements. No estab…
We present a method for photometric selection of metal-poor halo giants from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). These stars are offset from the stellar locus in the (g-r) vs. (u-g) color-color diagram. Based on a sample of 29 candidates for which spectra were taken, we derive a selection efficiency of the order of 50%, for stars brighter than $r \sim 17^m$. The candidates selected in 400 deg$^2$ of sky from the SDSS Early Data Release trace the known halo structures (tidal streams from the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy), indicating that such …
We present a detailed abundance analysis of 8 stars selected as extremely metal poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES). For comparison, we have also analysed 3 extremely metal-poor candidates from the HK survey, and 3 additional bright metal-poor stars. With this work, we have doubled the number of extremely metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]$\le 3.0$) with high-precision abundance analyses. Our sample of extremely metal-poor candidates from the HES contains 3 stars with [Fe/H] $\le -3.0$, 3 more with [Fe/H]$\le -2.8$, and 2 stars that are only slightly more metal rich. Thus, the chain of pro…
We report the discovery of eight new extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPGs; 12+log(O/H) < 7.65) and the recovery of four previously known or suspected XMPGs (IZw18, HS0822+3542, HS0837+4717 and A1116+517) using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy. These new objects were identified after an analysis of 250,000 galaxy spectra within an area of ~3000 deg^2 on the sky. Our oxygen abundance determinations have an accuracy of $\le$ 0.1 dex and are based on the temperature-sensitive [O {\sc iii}] $λ$4363 Åline and on the direct calculation of the electron temperature. We briefly discuss a new…
We elaborate the binary scenario for the origin of HE0107-5240, the most metal-poor star yet observed ([Fe/H] = -5.3), using current knowledge of the evolution of extremely metal-poor stars. From the observed C/N value, we estimate the binary separation and period. Nucleosynthesis in a helium convective zone into which hydrogen has been injected allows us to discuss the origin of surface O and Na as well as the abundance distribution of s-process elements. We can explain the observed abundances of 12C, 13C, N, O, and Na and predict future observations to validate the Pop III nature of HE0107-5…
We report on the first high spectral resolution analysis of extremely metal-poor halo stars from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). The spectra were obtained with UVES at VLT-UT2. The two stars under investigation (\object {HE 1303--2708} and \object {HE 1353--2735}) are main-sequence turnoff-stars having metal abundances of [Fe/H]=-2.85 and -3.20, respectively. The stellar parameters derived from the UVES spectra are in very good agreement with those derived from moderate-resolution follow-up spectra. HE 1353--2735 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary. The two stars nicely reprod…
We analyze the spectrum of an unusually-low mass white dwarf, SDSSJ123410.37-022802.9 (0335-264-52000), found in our recent, white dwarf catalog from the SDSS DR1 data release. Two independent, model atmosphere fits result in an accurate determination of atmospheric and stellar parameters. The more hands-on analysis yields $T_{\rm eff}$ =17,470$\pm$750 K and $\log g$ = 6.38$\pm$0.05. We argue that the object cannot be a main sequence A star, a horizontal branch or subdwarf B star. Instead, it is interpreted as a very low mass white dwarf with a core composed of helium, with mass ($\sim$0.18-0.…
We report high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise, observations of the extremely metal-poor double-lined spectroscopic binary CS 22876-032. The system has a long period : P = 424.7 $\pm$ 0.6 days. It comprises two main sequence stars having effective temperatures 6300 K and 5600 K, with a ratio of secondary to primary mass of 0.89 $\pm$ 0.04. The metallicity of the system is [Fe/H] = -3.71 $\pm$ 0.11 $\pm$ 0.12 (random and systematic errors) -- somewhat higher than previous estimates. We find [Mg/Fe] = 0.50, typical of values of less extreme halo material. [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe], however,…
Two alternative scenarios concerning the origin and evolution of extremely metal-poor halo stars are investigated. The first one assumes that the stars have been completely metal-free initially and produced observed carbon and nitrogen overabundances during the peculiar core helium flash typical for low-mass Population-III stars. The second scenario assumes that the initial composition resulted from a mixture of primordial material with ejecta from a single primordial supernovae. Both scenarios are shown to have problems in reproducing C, N, and O abundances simultaneously, and both disagree w…
We present spectroscopic observations with the 3.6m ESO telescope of two emission-line galaxies, J2104-0035 and J0113+0052, selected from the Data Release 4 (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). From our data we determine the oxygen abundance of these systems to be respectively 12+logO/H = 7.26+/-0.03 and 7.17+/-0.09, making them the two most metal-deficient galaxies found thus far in the SDSS and placing them among the five most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies ever discovered. Their oxygen abundances are close to those of the two most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies know…
In this series of two papers we present a high dispersion spectroscopic analysis of 8 candidate extremely metal poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO Survey and of 6 additional very metal poor stars. We demonstrate that with suitable vetting using moderate-resolution spectra the yield of this survey for stars with [Fe/H] $\le -3.0$ dex is very high; three out of the eight stars observed thus far at high resolution from the HES are actually that metal poor, three more have [Fe/H] $\le -2.8$ dex, and the remainder are only slightly more metal rich. In preparation for a large scale effort to m…
We present new metallicity measurements for 298 individual red giant branch stars in eight of the least luminous dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) in the Milky Way (MW) system. Our technique is based on medium resolution Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy coupled with spectral synthesis. We present the first spectroscopic metallicities at [Fe/H] < -3.0 of stars in a dwarf galaxy, with individual stellar metallicities as low as [Fe/H] = -3.3. Because our [Fe/H] measurements are not tied to empirical metallicity calibrators and are sensitive to arbitrarily low metallicities, we are able to probe this extr…
An abundance analysis for the carbon-enhanced, extremely iron-poor ([Fe/H] -3.5) star CS29498-043 has been obtained using new high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra from the Subaru Telescope. The [O I] forbidden line at 6300A and the O I triplet feature at 7771-7776A are both clearly detected. The overabundance of oxygen is significant ([O/Fe]>2). In addition, Na, Co, and Ni abundances have been newly measured. The abundance pattern from C to Ni of this object is quite similar to that of CS 22949--037, another extremely metal-poor star with large excesses of C, N, O, and the alpha-eleme…
We present an abundance analysis for the extremely metal poor star HE1424-0241 based on high dispersion spectra from HIRES at Keck. This star is a giant on the lower red giant branch with [Fe/H] ~ -4.0 dex. Relative to Fe, HE1424-0241 has normal Mg, but it shows a very large deficiency of Si, with epsilon(Si)/epsilon(Fe) ~ 1/10 and epsilon(Si)/epsilon(Mg) ~ 1/25 that of all previously known extremely metal poor giants or dwarfs. It also has a moderately large deficiency of Ca and a smaller deficit of Ti, combined with enhanced Mn and Co and normal or low C. We suggest that in HE1424-0241 we se…
We have re-evaluated empirical expressions for the abundance determination of N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar and Fe taking into account the latest atomic data and constructing an appropriate grid of photoionization models with state-of-the art model atmospheres. Using these expressions we have derived heavy element abundances in the $\sim$ 310 emission-line galaxies from the Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)with an observed Hbeta flux F(Hbeta)> 1E-14 erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} and for which the [O III] 4363 emission line was detected at least at a 2sigma level, allowing abundance determinatio…
Rotating massive stars at $Z=10^{-8}$ and $10^{-5}$ lose a great part of their initial mass through stellar winds. The chemical composition of the rotationally enhanced winds of very low $Z$ stars is very peculiar. The winds show large CNO enhancements by factors of $10^3$ to $10^7$, together with large excesses of $^{13}$C and $^{17}$O and moderate amounts of Na and Al. The excesses of primary N are particularly striking. When these ejecta from the rotationally enhanced winds are diluted with the supernova ejecta from the corresponding CO cores, we find [C/Fe], [N/Fe],[O/Fe] abundance ratios …
Aims: Aluminium is a key element to constrain the models of the chemical enrichment and the yields of the first supernovae. But obtaining precise Al abundances in extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars requires that the non-LTE effects be carefully taken into account. Methods: The NLTE profiles of the blue resonance aluminium lines have been computed in a sample of 53 extremely metal-poor stars with a modified version of the program MULTI applied to an atomic model of the Al atom with 78 levels of Al I and 13 levels of Al II, and compared to the observations. Results: With these new determinations, …
Stars more massive than $\sim$ 20 - 25 \ms form a black hole at the end of their evolution. Stars with non-rotating black holes are likely to collapse "quietly" ejecting a small amount of heavy elements (Faint supernovae). In contrast, stars with rotating black holes are likely to give rise to very energetic supernovae (Hypernovae). We present distinct nucleosynthesis features of these two types of "black-hole-forming" supernovae. Nucleosynthesis in Hypernovae is characterized by larger abundance ratios (Zn,Co,V,Ti)/Fe and smaller (Mn,Cr)/Fe than normal supernovae, which can explain the observ…
We investigate hydrodynamical and nucleosynthetic properties of the jet-induced explosion of a population III $40M_\odot$ star and compare the abundance patterns of the yields with those of the metal-poor stars. We conclude that (1) the ejection of Fe-peak products and the fallback of unprocessed materials can account for the abundance patterns of the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars and that (2) the jet-induced explosion with different energy deposition rates can explain the diversity of the abundance patterns of the metal-poor stars. Furthermore, the abundance distribution after the explosio…
We report results of a spectrophotometric study of SBS 1150+599A and discuss the nature of this object based upon our data. Our study shows that SBS 1150+599A is most probably a planetary nebula located in the Galactic halo and not a cataclysmic variable as originally proposed by the authors of the Second Byurakan Survey from low resolution spectroscopy. We have further elaborated on the properties of SBS 1150+599A (now becoming PN G135.9+55.9) with tools used for planetary nebula analysis. Our photoionization models show that, in order to match the observational constraints, the oxygen abunda…
The abundance patterns of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars provide us with important information on nucleosynthesis in supernovae (SNe) formed in a Pop III or EMP environment, and thus on the nature of the first stars in the Universe. We review nucleosynthesis yields of various types of those SNe, focusing on core-collapse (black-hole-forming) SNe with various progenitor masses, explosion energies (including Hypernovae), and asphericity. We discuss the implications of the observed trends in the abundance ratios among iron-peak elements, and the large C/Fe ratio observed in certain EMP stars wi…
There have been attempts to fit the abundance patterns of extremely metal-poor stars with supernova nucleosynthesis models for the lighter elements than Zn. On the other hand, observations have revealed that the presence of EMP stars with peculiarly high ratio of "weak r-process elements" Sr, Y and Zr. Although several possible processes were suggested for the origin of these elements, the complete solution for reproducing those ratios is not found yet. In order to reproduce the abundance patterns of such stars, we investigate a model with neutron rich matter ejection from the inner region of …
We present 6.5-meter MMT spectrophotometry of 20 H II regions in 13 extremely metal-poor emission-line galaxies selected from the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have [O III] 4959/Hbeta < 1 and [N II] 6583/Hbeta < 0.05. The electron temperature-sensitive emission line [O III] 4363 is detected in 13 H II regions allowing a direct abundance determination. The oxygen abundance in the remaining H II regions is derived using a semi-empirical method. The oxygen abundance of the galaxies in our sample ranges from 12+logO/H ~ 7.1 to ~ 7.8, with 10 H II regions having an oxygen abunda…
We report on the distribution of metallicities, [Fe/H], for very metal-poor stars in the halo of the Galaxy. Although the primary information on the nature of the Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF) is obtained from the two major recent surveys for metal-poor stars, the HK survey of Beers and collaborators, and the Hamburg/ESO Survey of Christlieb and collaborators, we also discuss the MDF derived from the publicly available database of stellar spectra and photometry contained in the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR-3). Even though the SDSS was not originally pla…
We present chemical abundances for 110 stars identified in objective-prism surveys as candidates to be very metal-poor. The abundances are derived from high S/N, intermediate-resolution spectra obtained with the Keck Observatory Echelle Spectrometer and Imager. An additional 25 stars with well-determined abundances ranging from [Fe/H]$=-1.5$ and -3.2 were observed and the results used to help calibrate our analysis and determine the accuracy of our abundance determinations. Abundances for the program stars were measured for Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr and Ba with an accuracy of approximately 0.3 dex. 5…
We demonstrate that there are systematic scale errors in the [Fe/H] values determined by the Hamburg/ESO Survey (and by inference by the HK Survey in the past) for certain extremely metal poor highly C-enhanced giants. The consequences of these scale errors are that a) the fraction of carbon stars at extremely low metallicities has been overestimated in several papers in the recent literature b) the number of extremely metal poor stars known is somewhat lower than has been quoted in the recent literature c) the yield for extremely metal poor stars by the HES Survey is somewhat lower than is st…
The results of optical spectroscopy of two HII regions in UGCA 292 (CVn I dwA) are presented. UGCA 292 is a nearby (D=3.1 Mpc) gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxy (M_H/L_B ~ 6.9) which was first discovered in a blind HI survey. The derived oxygen abundance is the third lowest of known star-forming galaxies [12 + log(O/H) = 7.30 +/- 0.05], making UGCA 292 one of the nearest metal-poor galaxies known. The derived N/O ratio is similar to that found in other low metallicity galaxies [log(N/O) = -1.47 +/- 0.10], and is indicative of a primary origin for nitrogen. The derived oxygen abundance is consist…
(abridged) Fast stellar rotation is currently the most promising mechanism for producing primary nitrogen in metal-poor massive stars. Chemical evolution models computed with the inclusion of the yields of fast rotating models at a metallicity $Z=10^{-8}$ can account for the high N/O abundances observed in normal metal-poor halo stars. If, as believed, intermediate mass stars did not have enough time to contribute to the interstellar medium enrichment at such low metallicities, the above result constitutes a strong case for the existence of fast rotators in the primordial Universe. An importan…
(abridged) We present long-slit spectroscopy with the 3.6m ESO telescope of eight HII regions in seven star-forming (SF) dwarf galaxies, discovered in SDSS DR4 and 6dFGRS. In addition, we use SDSS imaging data to study the photometric structure of the sample galaxies. From the 3.6m telescope spectra, we determine the oxygen abundance of these systems to be 7.3<12+log(O/H)<7.6, placing them among the most metal-poor SF galaxies ever discovered. Our photometric analysis reveals a moderately blue, stellar host galaxy in all sample galaxies. The detection of a stellar host in all galaxies studied …
Intermediate mass stellar evolution tracks from the main sequence to the tip of the AGB for five initial masses (2 to 6Msun) and metallicity Z=0.0001 have been computed. The detailed 1D structure and evolution models include exponential overshooting, mass loss and a detailed nucleosynthesis network with updated nuclear reaction rates. The network includes a two-particle heavy neutron sink for approximating neutron density in the He-shell flash. It is shown how the neutron-capture nucleosynthesis is important in models of very low metallicity for the formation of light neutron-heavy species, li…
The connection between the long GRBs and Type Ic Supernovae (SNe) has revealed the interesting diversity: (i) GRB-SNe, (ii) Non-GRB Hypernovae (HNe), (iii) X-Ray Flash (XRF)-SNe, and (iv) Non-SN GRBs (or dark HNe). We show that nucleosynthetic properties found in the above diversity are connected to the variation of the abundance patterns of extremely-metal-poor (EMP) stars, such as the excess of C, Co, Zn relative to Fe. We explain such a connection in a unified manner as nucleosynthesis of hyper-aspherical (jet-induced) explosions Pop III core-collapse SNe. We show that (1) the explosions wi…
We present a high-resolution spectroscopic analysis of the extremely-metal-poor star CS 22957-027, which Beers et al (1992) noted to exhibit a rather strong G-band. For Teff = 4839 K, derived from broadband photometry, our analysis obtains log g = 2.25, and a very low metallicity of [Fe/H]=-3.43 +/- 0.12. The carbon-to-iron ratio is found to be enhanced by about 2 dex relative to the solar value, similar to the handful of other carbon-rich metal-deficient stars discussed by Norris et al (1997a) and Barbuy et al (1997). From the 12C13C (1,0) Swan bandhead and 13CH lines the isotope ratio 12C/13…
During the early stages of galaxy evolution, the metallicity is generally low and nearby metal-poor star-forming galaxies may provide templates for primordial star formation. In particular, the dust content of such objects is of great importance since early molecular formation can take place on grains. To gain insight into primeval galaxies at high redshift, we examine the dust content of the nearby extremely low-metallicity galaxy SBS 0335-052 which hosts a very young starburst (< 10 Myr). In young galaxies, the dust formation rate in Type II supernovae governs the amount of dust, and by inco…
We present a detailed abundance analysis based on high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra of eight extremely metal poor (EMP) stars with [Fe/H] < -3.5$ dex, four of which are new. Only stars with 4900 < Teff< 5650 K are included. Two stars of the eight are outliers in each of several abundance ratios. The most metal poor star in this sample, HE1424-0241, has [Fe/H] ~ -4 dex and is thus among the most metal poor stars known in the Galaxy. It has highly anomalous abundance ratios unlike those of any other known EMP giant, with very low Si, Ca and Ti relative to Fe, and enhanced Mn and C…
We present full stellar evolution and parametric models of the surface abundance evolution of O16, Ne22, Na23 and the magnesium isotopes in an extremely metal-poor intermediate mass star M_ZAMS=5M_sun, Z=0.0001. O16 and Ne22 are injected into the envelope by the third dredge-up following thermal pulses on the asymptotic giant branch. These species and the initially present Mg24 are depleted by hot bottom burning (HBB) during the interpulse phase. As a result, Na23, Mg25 and Mg26 are enhanced. If the HBB temperatures are sufficiently high for this process to deplete oxygen efficiently, Na23 is …
