The chemical compositions of seven Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) turn-off stars are determined from high-resolution spectroscopy. Five of them are selected from the SDSS/SEGUE sample of metal-poor stars. The effective temperatures of these objects are all higher than 6000 K, while their metallicities, parametrized by [Fe/H], are all below -2. Six of our program objects exhibit high abundance ratios of barium ([Ba/H]> +1), suggesting large contributions of the products of former AGB companions via mass transfer across binary systems. Combining our results with previous studies provides a total of 20 CEMP main-sequence turn-off stars for which the abundances of carbon and at least some neutron-capture elements are determined. Inspection of the [C/H] ratios for this sample of CEMP turn-off stars show that they are generally higher than those of CEMP giants; their dispersion in this ratio is also smaller. We take these results to indicate that the carbon-enhanced material provided from the companion AGB star is preserved at the surface of turn-off stars with no significant dilution. In contrast, a large dispersion in the observed [Ba/H] is found for the sample of CEMP turn-off stars, suggesting that the efficiency of the s-process in very metal-poor AGB stars may differ greatly from star to star. Four of the six stars from the SDSS/SEGUE sample exhibit kinematics that are associated with membership in the outer-halo population, a remarkably high fraction.
We report on efforts to identify large samples of very and extremely metal-poor stars based on medium-resolution spectroscopy and ugriz photometry obtained during the course of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and its extension, SDSS-II, which includes the program SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration. To date, over 8000 stars with [Fe/H] <= -2.0 and effective temperatures in the range 4500K < T_eff < 7000K have been found, with the expected numbers in this temperature range to be well over 10,000 once SEGUE is completed. The numbers roughly double when one incl…
We report high-resolution spectroscopy of 125 field stars previously observed as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and its program for Galactic studies, the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). These spectra are used to measure radial velocities and to derive atmospheric parameters, which we compare with those reported by the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP). The SSPP obtains estimates of these quantities based on SDSS ugriz photometry and low-resolution (R = 2000) spectroscopy. For F- and G-type stars observed with high signal-to-noise ratios (S/N), we…
We present techniques for the estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff,logg,[Fe/H]) for stars from the SDSS/SEGUE survey. The atmospheric parameters are derived from the observed medium-resolution (R=2000) stellar spectra using non-linear regression models trained either on (1) pre-classified observed data or (2) synthetic stellar spectra. In the first case we use our models to automate and generalize parametrization produced by a preliminary version of the SDSS/SEGUE Spectroscopic Parameter Pipeline (SSPP). In the second case we directly model the mapping between synthetic spectra (…
We describe the development and implementation of the SEGUE (Sloan Extension for Galactic Exploration and Understanding) Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP). The SSPP derives, using multiple techniques, radial velocities and the fundamental stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity) for AFGK-type stars, based on medium-resolution spectroscopy and $ugriz$ photometry obtained during the course of the original Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-I) and its Galactic extension (SDSS-II/SEGUE). The SSPP also provides spectral classification for a much wider ran…
We validate the performance and accuracy of the current SEGUE (Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration) Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP), which determines stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity) by comparing derived overall metallicities and radial velocities from selected likely members of three globular clusters (M 13, M 15, and M 2) and two open clusters (NGC 2420 and M 67) to the literature values. Spectroscopic and photometric data obtained during the course of the original Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-I) and its first…
Close white dwarf binaries make up a wide variety of objects such as double white dwarf binaries, which are possible SN Ia progenitors, cataclysmic variables, super soft sources, or AM CVn stars. The evolution and formation of close white dwarf binaries crucially depends on the rate at which angular momentum is extracted from the binary orbit. The two most important sources of angular momentum loss are the common envelope phase and magnetic braking. Both processes are so far poorly understood. Observational population studies of white dwarf/main sequence binaries provide the potential to signi…
I report on recent results from observations of stars with metallicities [Fe/H] <= -2.0. These include a substantial new sample of objects with high-resolution observations obtained as part of a follow-up of the HK Survey, The Hamburg/ESO Survey, and the ongoing survey SEGUE: Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration. Perspectives on the next directions are also provided.
We give a progress report about the activities within the CIFIST Team related to the search for extremely metal-poor stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's spectroscopic catalog. So far the search has provided 25 candidates with metallicities around or smaller -3. For 15 candidates high resolution spectroscopy with UVES at the VLT has confirmed their extremely metal-poor status. Work is under way to extend the search to the SDSS's photometric catalog by augmenting the SDSS photometry, and by gauging the capabilities of X-shooter when going to significantly fainter targets.
We discuss the serendipitous discovery of an extremely metal poor galaxy, SDSS 0809+1729, classified as a star in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The galaxy has a redshift z = 0.0441 and a B-band absolute magnitude M_B = -17.1. With a metallicity of log(O/H)+12~7.44 or ~1/20 solar, this galaxy is among the 10 most metal poor emission-line galaxies known. SDSS 0809+1729 is a blue compact galaxy (BCG) with a stellar age of ~4.5 Myr, a star formation rate of 0.18 Msun/yr, and a large gas-phase electron density ~367/cm^3. Similar values of these parameters are common among other extremely met…
We are conducting a high-resolution follow-up of candidate EMP stars extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; York et al. 2000) using UVES at the VLT. Three of the programme stars, SDSS J0912+0216, SDSS J1036+1212 and SDSS J1349-0229, where deliberately targetted as CEMP stars since a strong $G$ band was evident from the SDSS spectra and the weakness of the Ca {\sc ii} K line testified their very low metallicity. The UVES high resolution follow-up confirmed the original findings ([Fe/H] $<-2.50$) and allowed a more detailed investigation of their chemical composition. We determined t…
We present a sample of 42 high-mass low-metallicity outliers from the mass--metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies. These galaxies have stellar masses that span log(M_*/M_sun) ~9.4 to 11.1 and are offset from the mass--metallicity relation by -0.3 to -0.85 dex in 12+log(O/H). In general, they are extremely blue, have high star formation rates for their masses, and are morphologically disturbed. Tidal interactions are expected to induce large-scale gas inflow to the galaxies' central regions, and we find that these galaxies' gas-phase oxygen abundances are consistent with large quantitie…
The atmospheric parameters and iron abundance of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrophotometric standard star BD +17 4708 are critically examined using up-to-date Kurucz model atmospheres, LTE line formation calculations, and reliable atomic data. We find Teff = 6141+-50 K, log g = 3.87+-0.08, and [Fe/H]=-1.74+-0.09. The line-of-sight interstellar reddening, bolometric flux, limb-darkened angular diameter, stellar mass, and the abundances of Mg, Si, and Ca are also obtained. This star is a unique example of a moderately metal-poor star for which the effective temperature can be accurat…
We report on the distribution of metallicities, [Fe/H], for very metal-poor stars in the halo of the Galaxy. Although the primary information on the nature of the Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF) is obtained from the two major recent surveys for metal-poor stars, the HK survey of Beers and collaborators, and the Hamburg/ESO Survey of Christlieb and collaborators, we also discuss the MDF derived from the publicly available database of stellar spectra and photometry contained in the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR-3). Even though the SDSS was not originally pla…
We present a method for photometric selection of metal-poor halo giants from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). These stars are offset from the stellar locus in the (g-r) vs. (u-g) color-color diagram. Based on a sample of 29 candidates for which spectra were taken, we derive a selection efficiency of the order of 50%, for stars brighter than $r \sim 17^m$. The candidates selected in 400 deg$^2$ of sky from the SDSS Early Data Release trace the known halo structures (tidal streams from the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy), indicating that such …
We report the discovery of eight new extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPGs; 12+log(O/H) < 7.65) and the recovery of four previously known or suspected XMPGs (IZw18, HS0822+3542, HS0837+4717 and A1116+517) using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy. These new objects were identified after an analysis of 250,000 galaxy spectra within an area of ~3000 deg^2 on the sky. Our oxygen abundance determinations have an accuracy of $\le$ 0.1 dex and are based on the temperature-sensitive [O {\sc iii}] $λ$4363 Åline and on the direct calculation of the electron temperature. We briefly discuss a new…
We have re-evaluated empirical expressions for the abundance determination of N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar and Fe taking into account the latest atomic data and constructing an appropriate grid of photoionization models with state-of-the art model atmospheres. Using these expressions we have derived heavy element abundances in the $\sim$ 310 emission-line galaxies from the Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)with an observed Hbeta flux F(Hbeta)> 1E-14 erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} and for which the [O III] 4363 emission line was detected at least at a 2sigma level, allowing abundance determinatio…
We present spectroscopic observations with the 3.6m ESO telescope of two emission-line galaxies, J2104-0035 and J0113+0052, selected from the Data Release 4 (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). From our data we determine the oxygen abundance of these systems to be respectively 12+logO/H = 7.26+/-0.03 and 7.17+/-0.09, making them the two most metal-deficient galaxies found thus far in the SDSS and placing them among the five most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies ever discovered. Their oxygen abundances are close to those of the two most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies know…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey can be used to detect and characterize red and reddened quasars. In Richards et al. (2003), we showed that 6% of SDSS quasars have red colors consistent with significant dust reddening by an extinction curve similar to that of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We estimate that a further 10% of the luminous quasar population is missing from our magnitude-limited SDSS sample. More recent work (Hopkins et al., in preparation) confirms the conclusion that dust reddening is the primary explanation for SDSS quasars in the red tail of the color distribution. Fitting ortho…
The advent of m class telescopes has allowed the detailed spectroscopic study of sizeable numbers of extremely metal-poor Galactic stars which are the witnesses of the formation of the early Galaxy. Their chemical composition displays some distinctive trends which should provide a strong constraint on the physical nature of the first generation(s) of stars and on their nucleosynthetic output. I will review recent results in the field following the periodic table, from lithium to uranium and shortly comment on the intriguing classes of Carbon Enhanced Metal Poor (CEMP) stars, for many of which …
We present 3.5m Apache Point Observatory second-epoch spectra of four low-metallicity emission-line dwarf galaxies discovered serendipitously in the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to have extraordinary large broad Halpha luminosities, ranging from 3x10^41 to 2x10^42 erg/s. The oxygen abundance in these galaxies is very low, varying in the range 12+logO/H = 7.36- 7.99. Such extraordinarily high broad Halpha luminosities cannot be accounted for by massive stars at different stages of their evolution. By comparing with the first-epoch SDSS spectra, we find that the broad Ha…
(abridged) We present long-slit spectroscopy with the 3.6m ESO telescope of eight HII regions in seven star-forming (SF) dwarf galaxies, discovered in SDSS DR4 and 6dFGRS. In addition, we use SDSS imaging data to study the photometric structure of the sample galaxies. From the 3.6m telescope spectra, we determine the oxygen abundance of these systems to be 7.3<12+log(O/H)<7.6, placing them among the most metal-poor SF galaxies ever discovered. Our photometric analysis reveals a moderately blue, stellar host galaxy in all sample galaxies. The detection of a stellar host in all galaxies studied …
Many EHB stars have been found in short-period binaries, where the companions in these post-common envelope systems are either white dwarfs or dM stars; these systems are catalogued as hot subdwarfs because the subdwarf is the more luminous component. Hypothesized Roche-lobe overflow systems (with more massive companions) may largely be uncatalogued, since the G band or Ca II K-line from the companion may have caused them to be overlooked or discarded. In particular, many candidate objects were excluded from the PG catalog because of such spectroscopic indicators. Could these rejects include l…
