We describe all locally semisimple subalgebras and all maximal subalgebras of the finitary Lie algebras $\gl(\infty), \sl(\infty), \so(\infty)$, and $\sp(\infty)$. For simple finite--dimensional Lie algebras these classes of subalgebras have been described in the classical works of A. Malcev and E. Dynkin.

We characterize locally semisimple subalgebras $ł$ of $\sl_\infty$, $\so_\infty$, and $\sp_\infty$ which are Levi components of parabolic subalgebras. Given $ł$, we characterize the parabolic subalgebras $\p$ such that $ł$ is a Levi component of $\p$. When the set of such self-normalizing parabolic subalgebras $\p$ is finite, we prove an estimate on its cardinality. We consider various examples which highlight the differences from the case of parabolic subalgebras of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras.
Let $\g$ be a locally reductive complex Lie algebra which admits a faithful countable-dimensional finitary representation $V$. Such a Lie algebra is a split extension of an abelian Lie algebra by a direct sum of copies of $\sl_\infty$, $\so_\infty$, $\sp_\infty$, and finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras. A parabolic subalgebra of $\g$ is any subalgebra which contains a maximal locally solvable (that is, Borel) subalgebra. Building upon work by Dimitrov and the authors of the present paper, we give a general description of parabolic subalgebras of $\g$ in terms of joint stabilizers of taut co…
In this article, we give a simple explicit construction of an affine slice for the coadjoint action of a certain class of biparabolic (also called seaweed) subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In particular, this class includes all Borel subalgebras.
The main goal of this paper is to prove the following theorem: Let $\frak k$ be an $\frak {sl}_2$-subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra $\frak g$, none of whose simple factors is of type $A1$. Then there exists a positive integer $b(\frak k, \frak g)$, such that for every irreducible finite dimensional $\frak g$-module $V$, there exists an injection of $\frak k$-modules $W \to V$, where $W$ is an irreducible $\frak k$-module of dimension less than $b(\frak k, \frak g)$. This result was announced in math.RT/0310140.
Let p be a maximal truncated parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie Algebra. It was shown in many cases that the Poisson centre Y(p) is a polynomial algebra. We construct a slice for the coadjoint action of p, thus extending a theorem of Kostant. The role of the principal sl_2-triple is played by an adapted pair.
For a semisimple Lie algebra over the complex numbers, Dynkin (1952) developed an algorithm to classify the regular semisimple subalgebras, up to conjugacy by the inner automorphism group. For a graded semisimple Lie algebra over the complex numbers, Vinberg (1979) showed that a classification of a certain type of regular subalgebras (called carrier algebras) yields a classification of the nilpotent orbits in a homogeneous component of that Lie algebra. Here we consider these problems for (graded) semisimple Lie algebras over the real numbers. First, we describe an algorithm to classify the re…
In this paper we develop algorithms of finding homogeneous spaces of semisimple non-compact Lie groups which do not admit compact Clifford-Klein forms. We propose a computer program which checks if the given homogeneous space has a non-vanishing cohomological obstruction (found by Tholozan) to compact Clifford-Klein forms. By a numerical experiment we show that there is a large class of homogeneous spaces satisfying Tholozan's condition.
In this note the notion of kernel of a representation of a semisimple Hopf algebra is introduced. Similar properties to the kernel of a group representation are proved in some special cases. In particular, every normal Hopf subalgebra of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is the kernel of a representation of H.
In his paper "A Construction for Coisotropic Subalgebras of Lie Bialgebras", Marco Zambon gave a way to use a long root of a complex semisimple Lie biaglebra $\mathfrak{g}$ to construct a coisotropic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we generalize Zambon's construction. Our construction is based on the theory of Lagrangian subalgebras of the double $\mathfrak{g}\oplus\mathfrak{g}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$, and our coisotropic subalgebras correspond to torus fixed points in the variety $\mathcal{L}(\mathfrak{g}\oplus\mathfrak{g})$ of Lagrangian subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}\oplus\mathfrak{g}…
For any involution $σ$ of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, one constructs a non-reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak k$, which is called a $\mathbb Z_2$-contraction of $\mathfrak g$. In this paper, we attack the problem of describing maximal commutative subalgebras of the Poisson algebra $S(\mathfrak k)$. This is closely related to the study of the coadjoint representation of $\mathfrak k$ and the set, $\mathfrak k^*_{reg}$, of the regular elements of $\mathfrak k^*$. By our previous results, in the context of $\mathbb Z_2$-contractions, the argument shift method provides maximal commutativ…
A description of all normal Hopf subalgebras of a semisimple Drinfeld double is given. This is obtained by considering an analogue of Goursat's lemma concerning fusion subcategories of Deligne products of two fusion categories. As an application we show that the Drinfeld double of any abelian extension is also an abelian extension.
We classify the solvable subalgebras, semisimple subalgebras, and Levi decomposable subalgebras of $\mathfrak{so}(4,\mathbb{C})$, up to inner automorphism. By Levi's Theorem, this is a full classification of the subalgebras of $\mathfrak{so}(4,\mathbb{C})$.
We find for each simple finitary Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ a category $\mathbb{T}_\mathfrak{g}$ of integrable modules in which the tensor product of copies of the natural and conatural modules are injective. The objects in $\mathbb{T}_\mathfrak{g}$ can be defined as the finite length absolute weight modules, where by absolute weight module we mean a module which is a weight module for every splitting Cartan subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$. The category $\mathbb{T}_\mathfrak{g}$ is Koszul in the sense that it is antiequivalent to the category of locally unitary finite-dimensional modules over a c…
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra, $\mathfrak h\subset\mathfrak g$ a reductive subalgebra such that $\mathfrak h^\perp$ is a complementary $\mathfrak h$-submodule of $\mathfrak g$. In 1983, Bogoyavlenski claimed that one obtains a Poisson commutative subalgebra of the symmetric algebra ${\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)$ by taking the subalgebra ${\mathcal Z}$ generated by the bi-homogeneous components of all $H\in{\mathcal S}(\mathfrak g)^{\mathfrak g}$. But this is false, and we present a counterexample. We also provide a criterion for the Poisson commutativity of such subalgebras ${\mat…
Let G be a connected semisimple algebraic group over $k$, with Lie algebra $\g$. Let $\h$ be a subalgebra of $\g$. A simple finite-dimensional $\g$-module V is said to be $\h$-indecomposable if it cannot be written as a direct sum of two proper $\h$-submodules. We say that $\h$ is wide, if all simple finite-dimensional $\g$-modules are $\h$-indecomposable. Some very special examples of indecomposable modules and wide subalgebras appear recently in the literature. In this paper, we describe several large classes of wide subalgebras of $\g$ and initiate their systematic study. Our approach is ba…
We say that a finite dimensional Lie algebra is quasi-reductive if it has a linear form whose stabilizer for the coadjoint representation, modulo the center, is a reductive Lie algebra with a center consisting of semisimple elements. Parabolic subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra are not always quasi-reductive (except in types A or C by work of Panyushev). The classification of quasi-reductive parabolic subalgebras in the classical case has been recently achieved in unpublished work of Duflo, Khalgui and Torasso. In this paper, we investigate the quasi-reductivity of biparabolic subalgebras…
If ${\mathfrak g}$ is a real reductive Lie algebra and ${\mathfrak h} < {\mathfrak g}$ is a subalgebra, then $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ is called real spherical provided that ${\mathfrak g} = {\mathfrak h} + {\mathfrak p}$ for some choice of a minimal parabolic subalgebra ${\mathfrak p} \subset {\mathfrak g}$. In this paper we classify all real spherical pairs $({\mathfrak g}, {\mathfrak h})$ where ${\mathfrak g}$ is semi-simple but not simple and ${\mathfrak h}$ is a reductive real algebraic subalgebra. The paper is based on the classification of the case where ${\mathfrak g}$ is simple…
We associate to an arbitrary positive root $α$ of a complex semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mfrak{g}$ a twisting endofunctor $T_α$ of the category of $\mfrak{g}$-modules. We apply this functor to generalized Verma modules in the category $\mcal{O}(\mfrak{g})$ and construct a family of $α$-Gelfand--Tsetlin modules with finite $Γ_α$-multiplicities, where $Γ_α$ is a commutative $\C$-subalgebra of the universal enveloping algebra of $\mfrak{g}$ generated by a Cartan subalgebra of $\mfrak{g}$ and by the Casimir element of the $\mfrak{sl}(2)$-subalgebra corresponding to the root $α$. Thi…
We define alternating cyclotomic Hecke algebras in higher levels as subalgebras of cyclotomic Hecke algebras under an analogue of Goldman's hash involution. We compute the rank of these algebras and construct a full set of irreducible representations in the semisimple case, generalising Mitsuhashi's results.
In this short note, we investigate the following question of Panyushev : ``Is the sum of the index of a parabolic subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and the index of its nilpotent radical always greater than or equal to the rank of $\mathfrak{g}$?''. Using the formula for the index of parabolic subalgebras conjectured by Tauvel and the author, and proved by Millet-Fauquant and Joseph, we give a positive answer to this question. Moreover, we also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for this sum to be equal to the rank of $\mathfrak{g}$. This provides new examples of d…
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra over the real numbers. We describe an explicit combinatorial construction of the real Weyl group of g with respect to a given Cartan subalgebra. An efficient computation of this Weyl group is important for the classification of regular semisimple subalgebras, real carrier algebras, and real nilpotent orbits associated with g; the latter have various applications in theoretical physics.
In this paper, we study certain ad-nilpotent subalgebras contained in the non-zero graded portion of a simple Z_n-graded Lie algebra. These subalgebras respect the grading on the Lie algebra and are modules for a Borel subalgebra for the grade-zero Lie subalgebra. We show that semisimple elements in such subalgebras lie in the center of the subalgebra, and we provide a classification of these subalgebras whose weight space decompositions have only non-zero weights.
In this article we review the main results of the earlier papers [I. Penkov, K. In the present paper we continue the project of systematic classification and construction of invariant differential operators for non-compact semisimple Lie groups. This time we make the stress on one of the main building blocks, namely the Verma modules and the corresponding parabolic subalgebras. In particular, we start the study of the relation between the parabolic subalgebras of real semisimple Lie algebras and of their complexification. Two cases are given in more detail: the conformal algebra of 4D Minkowski space-time and the minimal parabolics of classical real semisimple Lie algebra…
We study {\em disemisimple} Lie algebras, i.e., Lie algebras which can be written as a vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is disemisimple if and only if its solvable radical coincides with its nilradical and is a prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-module for a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{s}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$. We use the classification of prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-modules for simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{s}$ given by Vinberg to show that the solvable radical of a disemisimple Lie algebra with simple Levi subalgebra is abelian. We extend th…
Let $G$ be a complex reductive algebraic group, $g$ its Lie algebra and $h$ a reductive subalgebra of $g$, $n$ a positive integer. Consider the diagonal actions $G:g^n, N_G(h):h^n$. We study a relation between the algebra $C[h^n]^{N_G(h)}$ and its subalgebra consisting of restrictions to $h^n$ of elements of $C[g^n]^G$.
In this paper we show that the center of the partition algebra $\mathcal{A}_{2k}(δ)$, in the semisimple case, is given by the subalgebra of supersymmetric polynomials in the normalised Jucys-Murphy elements. For the non-semisimple case, such a subalgebra is shown to be central, and in particular it is large enough to recognise the block structure of $\mathcal{A}_{2k}(δ)$. This allows one to give an alternative description for when two simple $\mathcal{A}_{2k}(δ)$-modules belong to the same block.
A general Mackey type decomposition for representations of semisimple Hopf algebras is investigated. We show that such a decomposition occurs in the case that the module is induced from an arbitrary Hopf subalgebra and it is restricted back to a group subalgebra. Some other examples when such a decomposition occurs are also constructed. They arise from gradings on the category of corepresentations of a semisimple Hopf algebra and provide new examples of Green functors in the literature.
We prove an explicit formula for the invariant $μ(\Lg)$ for finite-dimensional semisimple, and reductive Lie algebras $\Lg$ over $\C$. Here $μ(\Lg)$ is the minimal dimension of a faithful linear representation of $\Lg$. The result can be used to study Dynkin's classification of maximal reductive subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras.
In this thesis we consider the maximal subalgebras of the exceptional Lie algebras in algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. This begins with a quick recap of the article by Herpel and Stewart which considered the Cartan type maximal subalgebras in the exceptional Lie algebras for good characteristic, and then the article by Premet considering non-semisimple maximal subalgebras in good characteristic. For $p=5$ we give an example of what appears to be a new maximal subalgebra in the exceptional Lie algebra of type $E_8$. We show that this maximal subalgebra is isomorphic to th…
The purpose of my Ph.D. research is to define and study an analogue of the classical Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) category $\mathcal{O}$ for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is one of the finitary, infinite-dimensional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{gl}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$, $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$, $\mathfrak{so}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$, and $\mathfrak{sp}_\infty(\mathbb{K})$. Here, $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. We call these categories "extended categories $\mathcal{O}$" and use the notation $\bar{\mathcal{O}}$. While the categorie…
The theory of quantum symmetric pairs as developed by the second author is based on coideal subalgebras of the quantized universal enveloping algebra for a semisimple Lie algebra. This paper investigates the center of these coideal subalgebras, proving that the center is a polynomial ring. A basis of the center is given in terms of a submonoid of the dominant integral weights.
We study the analogue of the Harish-Chandra homomorphism where the universal enveloping algebra is replaced by the Clifford algebra, $Cl(g)$, of a semisimple Lie algebra $g$. Two main goals are achieved. First, we prove that there is a Harish-Chandra type isomorphism between the subalgebra of $g$-invariants in $Cl(g)$ and the Clifford algebra of the Cartan subalgebra of $g$. Second, the Cartan subalgebra is identified, via this isomorphism, with a graded space of the so-called primitive skew-symmetric invariants of $g$. This leads to a distinguished orthogonal basis of the Cartan subalgebra, w…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a finite-dimensional semisimple complex Lie algebra and $θ$ an involutive automorphism of $\mathfrak{g}$. According to G. Letzter, S. Kolb and M. Balagović the fixed-point subalgebra $\mathfrak{k} = \mathfrak{g}^θ$ has a quantum counterpart $B$, a coideal subalgebra of the Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ possessing a universal K-matrix $\mathcal{K}$. The objects $θ$, $\mathfrak{k}$, $B$ and $\mathcal{K}$ can all be described in terms of Satake diagrams. In the present work we extend this construction to generalized Satake diagrams, combinatorial data firs…
Reductive (or semisimple) algebraic groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras have a rich geometry determined by their parabolic subgroups and subalgebras, which carry the structure of a building in the sense of J. Tits. We present herein an elementary approach to the geometry of parabolic subalgebras, over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero, which does not rely upon the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras. Indeed we derive such structure theory, from root systems to the Bruhat decomposition, from the properties of parabolic subalgebras. As well as constructing the Tits building of a …
In the category of semisimple Hopf algebras the Hopf kernels introduced by Andruskiewitsch and Devoto in \cite{AD} coincide with kernels of representation as introduced in \cite{Bker}. Some new results concerning the normality of kernels are also presented. It is proven that the property for Hopf algebras to have all kernels normal Hopf subalgebras is a self dual property.
For any normal commutative Hopf subalgebra $K=k^G$ of a semisimple Hopf algebra we describe the ring inside $kG$ obtained by the restriction of $H$-modules. If $G=\Z_p$ this ring determines a fusion ring and we give a complete description for it. The case $G=\Z_{p^n}$ and some other applications are presented.
An arbitrary proper parabolic subalgebra ${\mathfrak p}$ of a simple complex Lie algebra ${\mathfrak g}$ induces an embedding ${\mathfrak g}\hookrightarrow \mathbb W_n$, and more generally an embedding ${\mathfrak g}\hookrightarrow \mathbb W_n\otimes \operatorname{End}{} V$, where $\mathbb W_n$ is the Weyl algebra in $n$ variables, $n$ is the dimension of the nilradical of ${\mathfrak p}$, and $V$ is an arbitrary ${\mathfrak p}$-module. We give an elementary proof of this known fact, report on a computer program computing the embeddings, and tabulate exceptional Lie algebra embeddings $G_2 \ho…
We introduce the notion of a generalized spin representation of the maximal compact subalgebra of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra in order to show that, if defined over a formally real field, every such subalgebra has a non-trivial reductive finite-dimensional quotient. The appendix illustrates how to compute the isomorphism types of these quotients for the real $E_n$ series. In passing this provides an elementary way of determining the isomorphism types of the maximal compact subalgebras of the semisimple split real Lie algebras of types $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$.
In analogy to the theory of nilpotent orbit in finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebras, it is known that the principal $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras can be constructed in hyperbolic Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We obtained a series of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras in rank 2 symmetric hyperbolic Kac-Moody Lie algebras by extending the aforementioned construction. We present this result and also discuss $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ modules obtained by the action of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras on the original Lie algebras.
Let $\mathfrak g$ be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra. The symmetric algebra $\mathcal S(\mathfrak g)$ is equipped with the standard Lie-Poisson bracket. In this paper, we elaborate on a surprising observation that one naturally associates the second compatible Poisson bracket on $\mathcal S(\mathfrak g)$ to any finite order automorphism $θ$ of $\mathfrak g$. We study related Poisson-commutative subalgebras $\mathcal C$ of $\mathcal S(\mathfrak g)$ and associated Lie algebra contractions of $\mathfrak g$. To obtain substantial results, we have to assume that $\mathfrak g$ is semisimple. Then w…
If $L$ is a semisimple Lie algebra of vector fields on R^N with a split Cartan subalgebra C, then it is proved that the dimension of the generic orbit of C coincides with the dimension of C. As a consequence one obtains a local canonical form of L in terms of exponentials of coordinate functions and vector fields that are independent of these coordinates -- for a suitable choice of coordinates. This result is used to classify semisimple algebras of vector fields on R^3 and to determine all representations of sl(N, R) as vector fields on R^N. These representations are used to find linearizing c…
From the Levi's Theorem it is known that every finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero is decomposed into semidirect sum of solvable radical and semisimple subalgebra. Moreover, semisimple part is the direct sum of simple ideals. In \cite{Bar} the Levi's theorem is extended to the case of Leibniz algebras. In the present paper we investigate the semisimple Leibniz algebras and we show that the splitting theorem for semisimple Leibniz algebras is not true. Moreover, we consider some special classes of the semisimple Leibniz algebras and find a condition under which th…
Let g be a semisimple Lie algebra of finite dimension. The nullcone N of g is the set of (x, y) in g\timesg such that x and y are nilpotents and are in the same Borel subalgebra. The main result of this paper is that N is a closed and irreducible subvariety of g \times g whose normalization has rational singularities and such that the normalization morphism is bijective.
A condition on an affine central subalgebra $Z$ of a noetherian algebra $A$ of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, which we call here \emph{unruffledness}, is shown to be equivalent in some circumstances to the flatness of $A$ as a $Z$-module. Unruffledness was studied by Borho and Joseph in work on enveloping algebras of complex semisimple Lie algebras, and we discuss applications of our result to enveloping algebras, as well as beginning the study of this condition for more general algebras.
Let $\mathfrak a$ be an algebraic Lie algebra. An adapted pair for $\mathfrak a$ is pair $(h,η)$ consisting of an ad-semisimple element of $h \in \mathfrak a$ and a regular element of $η\in \mathfrak a^*$ satisfying $(ad \ h)η=-η$. An adapted pair $(h,η)$ is said to satisfy integrality if $ad \ h$ has integer eigenvalues on $\mathfrak a$. Integrality is shown to hold for any Frobenius Lie algebra which is a biparabolic subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra; but may fail in general. Call $\mathfrak a$ regular if there are no proper semi-invariant polynomial functions on $\mathfrak a^*$ and if …
In the present paper we show that Hall algebras of finitary exact categories behave like quantum groups in the sense that they are generated by indecomposable objects. Moreover, for a large class of such categories, Hall algebras are generated by their primitive elements, with respect to the natural comultiplication, even for non-hereditary categories. Finally, we introduce certain primitively generated subalgebras of Hall algebras and conjecture an analogue of "Lie correspondence" for those finitary categories.
This article introduces a new term "splint" and classifies the splints of the classical root systems. The motivation comes from representation theory of semisimple Lie algebras. In a few instances, splints play a role in determining branching rules of a module over a complex semisimple Lie algebra when restricted to a subalgebra. In these particular cases, the set of submodules with respect to the subalgebra themselves may be regarded as the character of another Lie algebra.
Parabolic subalgebras $\frak{p}$ of semisimple Lie algebras define a $\Bbb{Z}$-grading of the Lie algebra. If there exists a nilpotent element in the first graded part of $\frak{g}$ on which the adjoint group of $\frak{p}$ acts with a dense orbit, the parabolic subalgebra is said to be nice. The corresponding nilpotent element is also called admissible. Nice parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras have been classified. In the case of Borel subalgebras a Richardson element of $\frak{g}_1$ is exactly one that involves all simple root spaces. It is however difficult to write down such nilpot…
We prove that the Harish-Chandra--Schwartz space associated with a discrete subgroup of a semisimple Lie group is a dense subalgebra of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of the discrete subgroup. Then, we prove that for the reduced $C^*$-norm is controlled by the norm of the Harish-Chandra--Schwartz space. This inequality is weaker than property RD and holds for any discrete group acting isometrically, properly on a Riemannian symmetric space.
