It is argued that a dual symmetry is needed to naturally explain experimental limits on color confinement. Since color is an exact symmetry the only possibility is that this symmetry be a dual symmetry, related to non trivial spatial homotopy. The sphere at infinity of 3-dimensional space being 2-dimensional, the relevant homotopy is $Π_2$, the corresponding configurations monopoles, and the mechanism dual superconductivity. The consistency of the order-disorder nature of the deconfining transition is compared with lattice data . It is also shown that the only dual quantum number is magnetic charge and the key quantity is 't Hooft tensor, independent of the gauge group. The general form of the 't Hooft tensor is computed.
We relate quark confinement, as measured by the Polyakov-loop order parameter, to color confinement, as described by the Kugo-Ojima/Gribov-Zwanziger scenario. We identify a simple criterion for quark confinement based on the IR behaviour of ghost and gluon propagators, and compute the order-parameter potential from the knowledge of Landau-gauge correlation functions with the aid of the functional RG. Our approach predicts the deconfinement transition in quenched QCD to be of first order for SU(3) and second order for SU(2) -- in agreement with general expectations. As an estimate for the criti…
All colored particles including dynamical quarks and gluons are confined if the color confinement criterion proposed by Kugo and Ojima is satisfied. The criterion was obtained under the gauge fixing of the Lorenz type. However, it was pointed out that the Kugo-Ojima criterion breaks down for the Maximal Abelian gauge, which is quite strange in view of the fact that quark confinement has been verified according to the dual superconductivity caused by magnetic monopole condensations. In order to make a bridge between color confinement due to Kugo and Ojima and the dual superconductor picture for…
High density YM-theory is addressed by means of an effective theory where a Higgs type field corresponds to the diquark order parameter. The effective Higgs theory mimics the Cooper instability at the Fermi surface. After Landau gauge fixing, the theory possesses a global color degree of freedom. Color superconductivity corresponds to a spontaneous breakdown of the residual global color symmetry. Numerical simulations illustrate this mechanism of spontaneously broken global color for the case of the standard electro-weak phase transition and for the case of the transition between the confineme…
The property of color confinement ("C confinement"), meaning that all asymptotic particle states are color neutral, holds not only in QCD, but also in gauge-Higgs theories deep in the Higgs regime. In this talk we describe a new and stronger confinement criterion, separation-of-charge confinement or "S$_c$ confinement," which is an extension of the Wilson area-law criterion to gauge + matter theories. We will show that there is a transition between S$_c$ and C confinement in the phase plane of gauge-Higgs theories, and we will also explain what symmetry is actually broken in the Higgs phase of…
Abelian mechanism of non-Abelian color confinement is observed in a gauge-independent way by high precision lattice Monte Carlo simulations in gluodynamics. An Abelian gauge field is extracted with no gauge-fixing. A static quark-antiquark potential derived from Abelian Polyakov loop correlators gives us the same string tension as the non-Abelian one. The Hodge decomposition of the Abelian Polyakov loop correlator to the regular photon and the singular monopole parts also reveals that only the monopole part is responsible for the string tension. The investigation of the flux-tube profile then …
We rewrite the Zwanziger horizon condition in terms of the Kugo-Ojima parameter for color confinement. This enables one to explain which value of the Kugo-Ojima parameter is allowed if the horizon condition is imposed. Although all the calculations are performed in the limit of vanishing Gribov parameter for simplicity, the obtained value is consistent with the result of numerical simulations. Consequently, the ghost propagator behaves like free and the gluon propagator is non-vanishing at low momenta, in harmony with recent lattice results and decoupling solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equati…
We review some recent developments on BPS string solutions and monopole confinement in the Higgs or (color) superconducting phase of deformed N=2 and N=4 super Yang-Mills theories. In particular, the monopole magnetic fluxes are shown to be always integer linear combinations of string fluxes. Moreover, a bound for the threshold length of the string breaking is obtained. When the gauge group SU(N) is broken to Z_N, the BPS string tension satisfies the Casimir scaling law. Furthermore in the SU(3) case the string solutions are such that they allow the formation of a confining system with three m…
A simple model is presented that describes the free energy $W(J)$ of QCD coupled to an external current that is a single plane wave, $J(x) = H \cos(k \cdot x)$. The model satisfies a bound obtained previously on $W(J)$ that comes from the Gribov horizon. If one uses this model to fit recent lattice data --- which give for the gluon propagator $D(k)$ a non-zero value, $D(0) \neq 0$, at $k = 0$ --- the data favor a non-analyticity in $W(J)$.
The existing evidence for dual superconductivity as mechanism of color confinement is reviewed. We also discuss what is known on the dual excitations, which produce confinement by condensation, and what are the open problems
Analyticity of gluon and Faddeev--Popov ghost propagators and their form factors on the complex momentum-squared plane is exploited to continue analytically the ultraviolet asymptotic form calculable by perturbation theory into the infrared non-perturbative solution. We require the non-perturbative multiplicative renormalizability to write down the renormalization group equation. These requirements enable one to settle the value of the exponent characterizing the infrared asymptotic solution with power behavior which was originally predicted by Gribov and has recently been found as approximate…
The global $SU(3)$ color symmetry and its physical consequences are discussed. The Nöther current is actually governed by the conserved matter current of color charges if the color field generated by this charge is properly polarized. The color field strength of a charge can have a uniform part due to the nontrivial QCD vacuum field and the nonzero gluon condensate, which implies that the self-energy of a system with a net color charge is infinite and thereby cannot exist as a free state. This is precisely what the color confinement means. Accordingly, the Cornell type potential with the featu…
We consider the free energy $W[J] = W_k(H)$ of QCD coupled to an external source $J_μ^b(x) = H_μ^b \cos(k \cdot x)$, where $H_μ^b$ is, by analogy with spin models, an external "magnetic" field with a color index that is modulated by a plane wave. We report an optimal bound on $W_k(H)$ and an exact asymptotic expression for $W_k(H)$ at large $H$. They imply confinement of color in the sense that the free energy per unit volume $W_k(H)/V$ and the average magnetization $m(k, H) ={1 \over V} {\p W_k(H) \over \p H}$ vanish in the limit of constant external field $k \to 0$. Recent lattice data indic…
We study quark confinement in a system of two parallel domain walls interpolating different color dielectric media. We use the phenomenological approach in which the confinement of quarks appears considering the QCD vacuum as a color dielectric medium. We explore this phenomenon in QCD_2, where the confinement of the color flux between the domain walls manifests, in a scenario where two 0-branes (representing external quark and antiquark) are connected by a QCD string. We obtain solutions of the equations of motion via first-order differential equations. We find a new color confining potential…
The mechanism of non-Abelian color confinement is studied in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of the Abelian fields and monopoles extracted from non-Abelian link variables without adopting gauge fixing. Firstly, the static quark-antiquark potential and force are computed with the Abelian and monopole Polyakov loop correlators, and the resulting string tensions are found to be identical to the non-Abelian string tension. These potentials also show the scaling behavior with respect to the change of lattice spacing. Secondly, the profile of the color-electric field between a quark and an antiq…
An updated review is presented of our understanding of color confinement. Lattice results on condensation of magnetic charges are discussed. The role of vortices is analysed.
We propose a unified description of two important phenomena: color confinement in large-$N$ gauge theory, and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). We focus on the confinement/deconfinement transition characterized by the increase of the entropy from $N^0$ to $N^2$, which persists in the weak coupling region. Indistinguishability associated with the symmetry group -- SU($N$) or O($N$) in gauge theory, and S$_N$ permutations in the system of identical bosons -- is crucial for the formation of the condensed (confined) phase. We relate standard criteria, based on off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO)…
A scaling analysis is made of the order parameter describing monopole condensation at the deconfining transition of N_f=2 QCD around the chiral point. In accordance with scaling properties of the specific heat, studied in a previous paper, scaling is consistent with a first order transition. The status of dual superconductivity of the vacuum as a mechanism of color confinement is reviewed.
The evidence for dual superconductivity as a mechanism for color confinement is reviewed. New developments are presented for full QCD, i.e. in the presence of dynamical quarks.
The problem of the phase transition of a Z(3) spin system is a complex issue. A numerical simulation in the framework of the mean field theory using the Metropolis algorithm reveals: (a) the existence of second order phase transition with a degenerated critical point which could be considered as a state of resonance (b) hysteresis phenomena which are accompanied with tricritical crossover around the end point of first order transition. Based on these results we propose a scenario about confinement-deconfinement phase transition in SU(3) symmetry of color QCD which, as it is known, has the same…
Some basic features of confinement are reviewed, in particular the symmetry patterns of the dual dynamics. Open problems and possible directions of progress are discussed.
A new scheme for color confinement in QCD due to violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identities is discussed. The violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identities (VNABI) $J_μ$ is equal to Abelian-like monopole currents $k_μ$ defined by the violation of the Abelian-like Bianchi identities. Although VNABI is an adjoint operator satisfying the covariant conservation rule $D_μJ_μ=0$, it gives us, at the same time, the Abelian-like conservation rule $\partial_μJ_μ=0$. The Abelian-like conservation rule $\partial_μJ_μ=0$ is also gauge-covariant. There are $N^2-1$ conserved magnetic charges in the c…
As a color confinement mechanism, a dual Meissner effect due to Abelian monopoles involved in QCD has been discussed so far in various ways. But still there is an important problem unsolved. It is gauge invariance of the schemes or, in other words, the reason why non-Abelian color confinement is explained by means of the Abelian dual Meissner effect. Here it is shown that a random Abelian method based on the violation of non-Abelian Bianchi identity (VNABI) could prove SU(3) invariance and explain why color-singlets alone can survive in the confinement phase of QCD in the framework of the Abel…
If the dual Meissner effect due to abelian monopole condensation is the quark confinement mechanism of QCD as suggested in recent Monte-Carlo simulations of lattice QCD, new axial-vector and scalar bosons with the mass of O(1GeV) would appear as physical states which are different from ordinary hadrons and glueballs. The axial-vector boson can not decay into ordinary color-singlet hadrons and glueballs owing to a remainig global discrete permutation symmetry with respect to colors (Weyl symmetry) if the vacuum respects the symmetry as suggested from lattice MC simulations.
A new scheme for color confinement in QCD due to violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identities proposed earlier is revised. The violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identities (VNABI) $J_μ$ is equal to Abelian-like monopole currents $k_μ$ defined by the violation of the Abelian-like Bianchi identities. VNABI satisfies $\partial_μJ_μ=0$. There are $N^2-1$ conserved magnetic charges in $SU(N)$ QCD. The charge of each component of VNABI is assumed to satisfy the Dirac quantization condition. %%%%% Each color component of the non-Abelian electric field $E^a$ is squeezed by the corresponding colo…
A general discussion is presented of the possible symmetries responsible for confinement of color and of their evidence in lattice simulations. The consequences on the phase diagram of $QCD$ are also analyzed.
We report on evidence that confinement is related to dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD, as in quenched QCD. The vacuum is a dual superconductor in the confining phase, whilst the U(1) magnetic symmetry is realized a la Wigner in the deconfined phase.
A natural explanation of confinement can be given in terms of symmetry. Since color symmetry is exact, the candidate symmetry is dual and related to homotopy,i.e., in (3+1)d, to magnetic charge conservation. A set of r abelian 'tHooft-like tensors (r = rank of the gauge group) can be defined and the dual charge is a violation of the corresponding Bianchi identities. It is shown that this is equivalently described by non-abelian Bianchi identities.
We study the Z_N flux tubes and monopole confinement in deformed N=2* super Yang-Mills theories. In order to do that we consider an N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with an arbitrary gauge group G and add some N=2, N=1 and N=0 deformation terms. We analyze some possible vacuum solutions and phases of the theory, depending on the deformation terms which are added. In the Coulomb phase for the N=2* theory, G is broken to U(1)^r and the theory has monopole solutions. Then, by adding some deformation terms, the theory passes to the Higgs or color superconducting phase, in which G is broken to its cente…
Recent progress done in Pisa on the subject is presented. It is shown that dual superconductivity of the vacuum or absence of it is an intrinsic property of QCD vacuum, independent of the choice of the abelian projection. The order of the deconfining phase transition in $N_f=2$ QCD is studied as a key to understand the mechanism of confinement.
We report on evidence from lattice simulations that confinement is produced by dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD as in quenched QCD. Preliminary information is obtained on the order of the deconfining phase transition.
The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion is verified in the unquenched Landau gauge QCD simulation. The valence quark propagator of the Kogut-Susskind fermion with use of the fermion action including the Naik term and the staple contribution is calculated on MILC Asqtad unquenched gauge configurations, and it shows infrared suppression of the quark propagator.
It is demonstrated that monopole condensation in the confined phase of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories is independent of the specific Abelian projection used to define the monopoles. Hence the dual excitations which condense in the vacuum to produce confinement must have magnetic U(1) charge in all the Abelian projections. Some physical implications of this result are discussed.
Color confinement can be understood by the dual Higgs theory, where monopole condensation leads to the exclusion of the electric flux from the QCD vacuum. We study the role of the monopole for color confinement by investigating the monopole current system. When the self-energy of the monopole current is small enough, long and complicated monopole world-lines appear, which is a signal of monopole condensation. In the dense monopole system, the Wilson loop obeys the area-law, and the string tension and the monopole density have similar behavior as the function of the self-energy, which seems tha…
We study the role of the monopole for color confinement by using the monopole current system. For the self-energy of the monopole current less than ln$(2d-1)$, long and complicated monopole world-lines appear and the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and therefore the monopole current system almost reproduces essential features of confinement properties in the long-distance physics. In the short-distance physics, however, the monopole-current theory would become nonlocal due to the monopole size effect. This monopole size would provide a critical scale of QCD in terms of the dual Higgs mechanism…
We investigate the confining phase transition as function of temperature for theories with dynamical fermions in the two index symmetric and antisymmetric representation of the gauge group. By studying the properties of the center of the gauge group we predict for an even number of colors a confining phase transition, if second order, to be in the universality class of Ising in three dimensions. This is due to the fact that the center group symmetry does not break completely for an even number of colors. For an odd number of colors the center group symmetry breaks completely. This pattern rema…
New evidence is discussed of monopole condensation in the vacuum of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories. Monopoles defined by different abelian projections do condense in the transition to the confined phase and show the same behavior. For SU(2) critical indices are determined by finite size scaling analysis and the results agree with the 3d Ising Model, as expected.
The problem of color confinement in lattice Landau gauge QCD is briefly reviewed in the light of Kugo-Ojima criterion and Gribov-Zwanziger theory. The infrared properties of the Landau gauge QCD is studied by the measurement of the gluon propagator, ghost propagator, Kugo-Ojima parameter and the running coupling via $β=6.4,32^4,48^4$ lattice simulation. The data are analyzed in the principle of minimum sensitivity(PMS) in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme. We observe the running coupling $α_s(q)$ has a maximum about 1 and decreases near q=0. The Kugo-Ojima parameter, which is expected to be 1 was a…
We construct the creation operator of a vortex for SU(2) pure gauge theory using the methods developed for monopoles. We interpret its vacuum expectation value as a disorder parameter for the deconfinement phase transition and find that it behaves in the vacuum in a similar way to monopoles. Results are extrapolated to the thermodynamical limit using finite-size scaling.
The lattice gauge theory for curved spacetime is formulated. A discretized action is derived for both gluon and quark fields which reduces to the generally covariant form in the continuum limit. Using the Wilson action, it is shown analytically that for a general curved spacetime background, two propagating gluons are always color-confined. The fermion-doubling problem is discussed in the specific case of Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric. Lastly, we discussed possible future numerical implementation of lattice QCD in curved spacetime.
We propose a new lattice framework to extract the relevant gluonic energy scale of QCD phenomena which is based on a "cut" on link variables in momentum space. This framework is expected to be broadly applicable to all lattice QCD calculations. Using this framework, we quantitatively determine the relevant energy scale of color confinement, through the analyses of the quark-antiquark potential and meson masses. The relevant energy scale of color confinement is found to be below 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the string tension is almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum…
We study the long-range behavior of the heavy quark potential in Coulomb gauge using a quenched SU(3) lattice gauge simulation with partial-length Polyakov line correlators. We show that the Coulomb heavy quark potential associated with the instantaneous part of gluon propagators in Coulomb gauge, presents a linearly rising behavior at large distances, and the resulting Coulomb string tension is greater than the Wilson loop string tension, which can be explained by Zwanziger's inequality. The linearly rising behavior of the Coulomb heavy quark potential persists even in the deconfinement phase…
A simple formal computation, and a variation on an old thought experiment, both indicate that QCD with light quarks may confine fundamental color magnetic charges, giving an explicit as well as elegant resolution to the `global color' paradox, strengthening Vachaspati's SU(5) electric-magnetic duality, opening new lines of inquiry for monopoles in cosmology, and suggesting a class of geometrically large QCD excitations -- loops of Z(3) color magnetic flux entwined with light-quark current. The proposal may be directly testable in lattice gauge theory or supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Recent…
We argue that lattice calculations of the $η'$ mass in QCD with $N_c=2$ colors performed at non-zero baryon chemical potential can be used to study the mechanism responsible for the mass of the $η'$. QCD with two colors is an ideal laboratory because it exhibits confinement, chiral symmetry breaking and a would-be $U(1)_A$ Goldstone boson at all densities. Since the instanton density and the confinement scale vary with density in a very different way, instantons are clearly distinguishable from other possible mechanisms. There is an instanton prediction for the $η'$ mass at large density that …
If the color Coulomb potential is confining, then the Coulomb field energy of an isolated color charge is infinite on an infinite lattice, even if the usual UV divergence is lattice regulated. A simple criterion for Coulomb confinement is that the expectation value of timelike link variables vanishes in Coulomb gauge, but it is unclear how this criterion is related to the spectrum of the corresponding Faddeev-Popov operator, which can be used to formulate a quite different criterion for Coulomb confinement. The purpose of this article is to connect the two seemingly different Coulomb confineme…
The Kugo-Ojima color confinement criterion, which is based on the BRST symmetry of QCD is numerically tested by the lattice Landau gauge simulation. We first discuss the BRST symmetry on the lattice and the Gribov copy problem. The horizon function defined by Zwanziger based on the U-linear definition of the gauge field and that based on log U are compared. The parameter u which is expected to be $-1δ^a_b$ in the continuum theory was found to be $-0.7δ^a_b$ in the strong coupling region. There are about 20% difference between the two horizon functions, but in the weak coupling region, the expe…
We present results of $SU(3)$ Monte-Carlo studies of a new color confinement scheme proposed recently due to Abelian-like monopoles of the Dirac type corresponding in the continuum limit to violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identities (VNABI). The simulations are done without any additional gauge-fixing smoothing the vacuum. We get for the first time, in pure $SU(3)$ simulations with the standard Wilson action, (1) the perfect Abelian dominance with respect to the static potentials on $12^4\sim 16^4$ lattices at $β=5.6-5.8$ using the multilevel method. (2) The perfect monopole as well as Ab…
We present results of $SU(3)$ Monte-Carlo studies of a new color confinement scheme due to Abelian-like monopoles of the Dirac type without any gauge-fixing. We get (1) perfect Abelian dominance with respect to the static potentials on $12^4\sim 16^4$ lattice at $β=5.6-5.8$ using the multilevel method, (2) monopole as well as Abelian dominances with respect to the static potentials by evaluating Polyakov loop correlators on $24^3\times4$ lattice at $β=5.6$. (3) Abelian dual Meissner effects are studied directly by measuring Abelian color fields and monopole currents around the static source. T…
U(1), SU(2), and SU(3) lattice gauge theories in presence of external fields are investigated both in (3+1) and (2+1) dimensions. The free energy of gauge systems has been measured. While the phase transition in compact U(1) is not influenced by the strength of an external constant magnetic field, the deconfinement temperature for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge systems in a constant abelian chromomagnetic field decreases when the strength of the applied field increases. The dependence of the deconfinement temperature on the strength of an external constant chromomagnetic field seems to be a peculiar fe…
We address two questions related to the procedure of identifying center vortices based on center projection in maximal center gauge: 1. How does the procedure work, why is it expected to locate center vortices relevant for confinement, and why does it in some cases fail, on lattice configurations preconditioned in a special way? 2. Does the mechanism work the same way for 3 colors instead of 2? (The paper is an abridged version of two recent e-prints, hep-lat/9910033 and hep-lat/9911006.)
We construct an effective Lagrangian which illustrates why color deconfines when chiral symmetry is restored in hot gauge theories with quarks in the fundamental representation. For quarks in the adjoint representation we show that while deconfinement and the chiral transition do not need to coincide, entanglement between them is still present. Extension to the chemical potential driven transition is discussed.
Our research reveals the relations among monopoles, color confinement, instantons, and chiral symmetry breaking which experiments can detect, by numerical calculations of lattice gauge theory. We first add a monopole and an anti-monopole varying their magnetic charges to the gauge field configurations in the quenched approximation of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), by applying the monopole creation operator and investigate the effects of the added monopoles and anti-monopoles on color confinement. Second, we reveal the quantitative relations among instantons, anti-instantons, and observables usi…
