As a pure quantum state is being approached via linear feedback, and the occupation number approaches and eventually goes below unity, optimal control becomes crucial. We obtain theoretically the optimal feedback controller that minimizes the uncertainty for a general linear measurement process, and show that even in the absence of classical noise, a pure quantum state is not always achievable via feedback. For Markovian measurements, the deviation from minimum Heisenberg Uncertainty is found to be closely related to the extent to which the device beats the free-mass Standard Quantum Limit for force measurement. We then specialize to optical Markovian measurements, and demonstrate that a slight modification to the usual input-output scheme -- either injecting frequency independent squeezed vacuum or making a homodyne detection at a non-phase quadrature -- allows controlled states of kilogram-scale mirrors in future LIGO interferometers to reach occupation numbers significantly below unity.
We investigate a simple arrangement of coupled harmonic oscillators which brings out some interesting effects concerning creation of entanglement. It is well known that if each member in a linear chain of coupled harmonic oscillators is prepared in a ``classical state'', such as a pure coherent state or a mixed thermal state, no entanglement is created in the rotating wave approximation. On the other hand, if one of the oscillators is prepared in a nonclassical state (pure squeezed state, for instance), entanglement may be created between members of the chain. In the setup considered here, we …
We construct two commuting sets of creation and annihilation operators for the PT-symmetric oscillator. We then build coherent states of the latter as eigenstates of such annihilation operators by employing a modified version of the normalization integral that is relevant to PT-symmetric systems. We show that the coherent states are normalizable only in the range (0, 1) of the underlying coupling parameter $α$.
The exact solvability and impressive pedagogical implementation of the harmonic oscillator creation and annihilation operators make it a problem of great physical relevance and the most fundamental one in quantum mechanics. So would be the position dependent mass oscillator for the position dependent mass quantum mechanics. We, hereby, construct the position dependent mass creation and annihilation operators for the position dependent mass oscillator via two different approaches. First, via von Roos position dependent mass Hamiltonian and show that the commutation relation between the position…
We report a 65MHz-bandwidth triangular-shaped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for squeezed vacuum generation at 860nm. The triangle structure of our OPO enables the round-trip length to reach 45mm as a ring cavity, which provides a counter circulating optical path available for introducing a probe beam or generating another squeezed vacuum. Hence our OPO is suitable for the applications in high-speed quantum information processing where two or more squeezed vacua form a complicated interferometer, like continuous-variable quantum teleportation. With a homemade, broadband and low-loss homod…
The equilibrium properties of an open harmonic oscillator are considered in three steps: First the creation and destruction operators are generalized for open dynamics and the creation operator is used to construct coherent states. The second step consists of the introduction of the Heisenberg representation where the dynamical decoherence can be identified without making reference to the state of the system. Finally it is pointed out that the quantum fluctuations generate non-continuous limit for infinitesimal system-environment interactions and at the border of the under- and over-damped osc…
Invariant creation and annihilation operators and related Fock states and coherent states are built up for the system of nonstationary fermionic forced oscillator.
An elegant method to circumvent quantum measurement backaction is the use of quantum mechanics free subsystems (QMFS), with one approach involving the use of two oscillators with effective masses of opposite signs. Since negative energies, and hence masses, are a characteristic of relativistic systems a natural question is to what extent QMFS can be realized in this context. Using the example of a one-dimensional Dirac oscillator we investigate conditions under which this can be achieved, and identify Zitterbewegung or virtual pair creation as the physical mechanism that fundamentally limits t…
Using the Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator as a toy model, we outline a consistent alternative to the indefinite-metric quantization scheme that does not violate unitarity. We describe the basic mathematical structure of this method by giving an explicit construction of the Hilbert space of state vectors and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators. The latter satisfy the usual bosonic commutation relation and differ from those of the indefinite-metric theories by a sign in the definition of the creation operator. This change of sign achieves a definitization of the indefinite-metric tha…
We show that an atom can be coupled to a mechanical oscillator via quantum vacuum fluctuations of a cavity field enabling energy transfer processes between them. In a hybrid quantum system consisting of a cavity resonator with a movable mirror and an atom, these processes are dominated by two pair-creation mechanisms: the counterrotating (atom-cavity system) and dynamical Casimir interaction terms (optomechanical system). Because of these two pair-creation mechanisms, the resonant atom-mirror coupling is the result of high-order virtual processes with different transition paths well described …
We apply the continuous variable approach to study entangled dynamics of coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal reservoir and to a deterministic creation of entanglement in an atomic ensemble located inside a high-Q ring cavity. In the case of harmonic oscillators, we show that a suitable unitary transformation of the position and momentum operators transforms the system to a set of independent harmonic oscillators with only one of them coupled to the reservoir. Working in the Wigner representation of the density operator, we find that the covariance matrix has a block diagona…
We demonstrate a quantum regime of dissipative nonlinear oscillator where creation of Fock states as well as superpositions of Fock states are realized for time-intervals exceeding the characteristic decoherence time. Preparation of quantum states is conditioned by strong Kerr nonlinearity as well as by excitation of resolved lower oscillatory energy levels with specific train of Gaussian pulses. This provides practical signatures to look for in experiments with cooled nonlinear oscillators.
Coherent control and the creation of entangled states are discussed in a system of two superconducting flux qubits interacting with each other through their mutual inductance and identically coupling to a reservoir of harmonic oscillators. We present different schemes using continuous-wave control fields or Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passages, both of which rely on a dynamic control of the qubit transition frequencies via the external bias flux in order to maximize the fidelity of the target states. For comparison, also special area pulse schemes are discussed. The qubits are operated aroun…
Mesoscopic quantum superpositions, or Schrödinger cat states, are widely studied for fundamental investigations of quantum measurement and decoherence as well as applications in sensing and quantum information science. The generation and maintenance of such states relies upon a balance between efficient external coherent control of the system and sufficient isolation from the environment. Here we create a variety of cat states of a single trapped atom's motion in a harmonic oscillator using ultrafast laser pulses. These pulses produce high fidelity impulsive forces that separate the atom into …
We propose a new witness operation for the non-classical character of a harmonic oscillator state. The method does not require state reconstruction. For all harmonic oscillator states that are classical, a bound is established for the evolution of a qubit which is coupled to the oscillator. Any violation of the bound can be rigorously attributed to the non-classical character of the initial oscillator state.
We show that the Schrödinger equation for the quantum harmonic oscillator can be derived as an approximation to the Newtonian mechanics of a classical harmonic oscillator subject to a random force for time intervals $O( m / \hbar)$, when $\hbar / m \ll 1$. Conversely, every solution to the Schrödinger equation, including all the superposition states, arises this way. In other words, the quantum harmonic oscillator is approximately nothing but the classical harmonic oscillator, with the same mass and frequency as the quantum harmonic oscillator, subject to a random force. We generalize the resu…
We analyze a method for the creation, storage and retrieval of optomechanical Schrodinger cat states, in which there is a quantum superposition of two distinct macroscopic states of a mechanical oscillator. In the proposal, an optical cat state is first prepared in an optical cavity, then transferred to the mechanical mode, where it is stored and later retrieved using control fields. We carry out numerical simulations for the quantum memory protocol for optomechanical cat states using the positive-P phase space representation. This has a compact, positive representation for a cat state, thus a…
Creating non-classical states of light from simple quantum systems together with classical resources is a challenging problem. We show how chiral emitters under a coherent drive can generate non-classical photon states. For our analysis, we select a specific temporal mode in the transmitted light field, resulting in a coupled master equation for the relevant mode and the chiral emitters. We characterise the mode's state by its Wigner function and show that the emission from the system predominantly produces mixtures of few-photon-added coherent states. We argue that these non-classical states …
We consider a set of N linearly coupled harmonic oscillators and show that the diagonalization of this problem can be put in geometrical terms. The matrix techniques developed here allowed for solutions in both the classical and quantum regimes.
Classical oscillators of sextic and octic anharmonicities are solved analytically up to the linear power of λ(Anharmonic Constant) by using Taylor series method. These solutions exhibit the presence of secular terms which are summed up for all orders. The frequency shifts of the oscillators for small anharmonic constants are obtained. It is found that the calculated shifts agree nicely with the available results to-date. The solutions for classical anharmonic oscillators are used to obtain the solutions corresponding to quantum anharmonic oscillators by imposing fundamental commutation relatio…
Here a special case of perturbation in quantum harmonic oscillator is studied. Here we assume the perturbed potential to be a Harmonic Oscillator that has been shifted in the position space. We construct the new creation and annihilation operators for the new Hamiltonian to find out its energy eigenstates. What is interesting about the solution of this system is that we find out that the ground state of this system is a coherent state of the ground state of the original harmonic oscillator. We know that the Hamiltonian of electromagnetic field is similar to that of the harmonic oscillator where…
The quantum dynamics of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators is analytically and numerically investigated in the context of nonlinear dissipation. The latter facilitates the creation and preservation of non-classical steady states. Starting from a microscopic description of two oscillators individually interacting with their dissipative environments, it is found that in addition to energy relaxation, dephasing arises due to the mutual coupling. Using the negativity as an entanglement measure, it is shown that the coupling entangles the oscillators in the long-time limit. For finite tempera…
The upside-down simple harmonic oscillator system is studied in the contexts of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. It is shown that in order to study in a simple manner the creation and decay of a physical system by ways of Gamow vectors we must formulate the theory in a time-asymmetric fashion, namely using two different rigged Hilbert spaces to describe states evolving towards the past and the future. The spaces defined in the contexts of quantum and classical statistical mechanics are shown to be directly related by the Wigner function.
We study microwave response of a Josephson parametric oscillator consisting of a superconducting transmission-line resonator with an embedded dc-SQUID. The dc-SQUID allows to control the magnitude of a Kerr nonlinearity over the ranges where it is smaller or larger than the photon loss rate. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the change of the microwave response from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator in a single device. In the single-photon Kerr regime, we observe parametric oscillations with a well-defined phase of either $0$ or $π$, whose probability can be control…
The annihilation-creation operators of the harmonic oscillator, the basic and most important tools in quantum physics, are generalised to most solvable quantum mechanical systems of single degree of freedom including the so-called `discrete' quantum mechanics. They admit exact Heisenberg operator solution. We present unified definition of the annihilation-creation operators (a^{(\pm)}) as the positive/negative frequency parts of the exact Heisenberg operator solution.
We show that the heating effect of spontaneous wave-function collapse models implies an experimentally significant increment $ΔT$ of equilibrium temperature in a mechanical oscillator. The obtained form $ΔT$ is linear in the oscillator's relaxation time $τ$ and independent of the mass. The oscillator can be in a classical thermal state, the effect $ΔT$ is classical for a wide range of frequencies and quality factors. We note that the test of $ΔT$ does not necessitate quantum state monitoring but tomography. In both gravity-related (DP) and continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) models the s…
The photon creation and annihilation operators are cornerstones of the quantum description of the electromagnetic field. They signify the isomorphism of the optical Hilbert space to that of the harmonic oscillator and the bosonic nature of photons. We perform complete experimental characterization (quantum process tomography) of these operators. By measuring their effect on coherent states, we obtain their process tensor in the Fock basis, which explicitly shows the "raising" and "lowering" properties of these operators with respect to photon number states. This is the first experimental demon…
Motivated by quantum gravity, semi-classical theory, and quantum theory on curved spacetimes, we study the system of an oscillator coupled to two spin-1/2 particles. This model provides a prototype for comparing three types of dynamics: the full quantum theory, the classical oscillator with spin backreaction, and spins propagating on a fixed oscillator background. From nonperturbative calculations of oscillator and entanglement entropy dynamics, we find that entangled tripartite states produce novel oscillator trajectories, and that the three systems give equivalent dynamics for sufficiently w…
We recycle Cruz et al.'s (Phys. Lett. A 369 (2007) 400) work on the classical and quantum position-dependent mass (PDM) oscillators. To elaborate on the ordering ambiguity, we properly amend some of the results reported in their work and discuss the classical and quantum mechanical correspondence for the PDM harmonic oscillators. We use a point canonical transformation and show that one unique quantum PDM oscillator Hamiltonian (consequently, one unique ordering-ambiguity parametric set j=l=-1/4 and k=-1/2) is obtained. To show that such a parametric set is not just a manifestation of the quan…
For a better understanding of the physical systems, even at the quantum level, the thermal quantities can be investigated. Recently, we realized that the parity of the system can also be examined simultaneously, by substituting the Dunkl operator with the ordinary differential operator in quantum mechanics. In this manuscript, we consider two relativistic Dunkl-oscillators and investigate their thermal quantities with well-known statistical methods. Besides, we establish a relationship between the Dunkl-Dirac oscillator and the Dunkl-Anti-Jayne-Cummings model by defining the Dunk creation and …
The investigation of quantum-classical correspondence may lead to gain a deeper understanding of the classical limit of quantum theory. We develop a quantum formalism on the basis of a linear-invariant theorem, which gives an exact quantum-classical correspondence for damped oscillatory systems that are perturbed by an arbitrary force. Within our formalism, the quantum trajectory and expectation values of quantum observables are precisely coincide with their classical counterparts in the case where we remove the global quantum constant h from their quantum results. In particular, we illustrate…
We solve the optimal quantum limit of probing a classical force exactly by a damped oscillator initially prepared in the factorized squeezed state. The memory effects of the thermal bath on the oscillator evolution are investigated. We show that the optimal force sensitivity obtained by the quantum estimation theory approaches to zero for the non-Markovian bath, whereas approaches to a finite non-zero value for the Markovian bath as the energy of the damped oscillator goes to infinity.
We present a heralded state preparation scheme for driven nonlinear open quantum systems. The protocol is based on a continuous photon counting measurement of the system's decay channel. When no photons are detected for a period of time, the system has relaxed to a measurement-induced pseudo-steady state. We illustrate the protocol by the creation of states with a negative Wigner function in a Kerr oscillator, a system whose unconditional steady state is strictly positive.
As known all physical properties of solids are described well by the system of quantum linear harmonic oscillators. It is shown in the present paper that the system consisting of classical linear harmonic oscillators having temperature dependent masses or (and) frequencies has the same partition function as the system consisting of quantum linear harmonic oscillators having temperature independent masses and frequencies while the means of the square displacements of the positions of the oscillators from their mean positions for the system consisting of classical linear harmonic oscillators hav…
By factorization of the Hamiltonian describing the quantum mechanics of the continuous q-Hermite polynomial, the creation and annihilation operators of the q-oscillator are obtained. They satisfy a q-oscillator algebra as a consequence of the shape-invariance of the Hamiltonian. A second set of q-oscillator is derived from the exact Heisenberg operator solution. Now the q-oscillator stands on the equal footing to the ordinary harmonic oscillator.
For a time-dependent classical quadratic oscillator we introduce pairs of real and complex invariants that are linear in position and momentum. Each pair of invariants realize explicitly a canonical transformation from the phase space to the invariant space, in which the action-phase variables are defined. We find the action operator for the time-dependent oscillator via the classical-quantum correspondence. Candidate phase operators conjugate to the action operator are discussed, but no satisfactory ones are found.
Unique set of coherent states for the anharmonic oscillator is obtained by requiring i. under the quantum mechanical time evolution a coherent state evolves into another, governed by trajectory in the classical phase space (of a related hamiltonian); ii. the resolution of identity involves exactly the classical phase space measure. The rules are invariant under unitary transformations of the quantum theory and canonical transformations of the classical theory. The states are almost, but not quite, minimal uncertainty wave packets. The construction can be generalized to quantum versions of integ…
A new formulation of the theory of quantum mechanical multichannel scattering for three-body collinear systems is proposed. It is shown, that in this simple case the principle of quantum determinism in the general case breaks down and we have a micro-irreversible quantum mechanics. The first principle calculations of the quantum chaos (wave chaos) were pursued on the example of an elementary chemical reaction Li+(FH)->(LiFH)*->(LiF)+H.
We emphasize the fact the evolution of quantum states in the inverted oscillator (IO) is reduced to classical equations of motion, stressing that the corresponding tunnelling and reflexion coefficients addressed in the literature are calculated by considering only classically trajectories. The Wigner function formalism is employed to describe the IO classical dynamics, subsequently leading to the introduction of the Ambiguity function lying in the so-called Reciprocal phase space. Our findings, show that the Ambiguity function behavior, subjected to the IO, allude a classical propagation with …
Some of the most enduring questions in physics--including the quantum measurement problem and the quantization of gravity--involve the interaction of a quantum system with a classical environment. Two linearly coupled harmonic oscillators provide a simple, exactly soluble model for exploring such interaction. Even the ground state of a pair of identical oscillators exhibits effects on the quantum nature of one oscillator, e.g., a diminution of position uncertainty, and an increase in momentum uncertainty and uncertainty product, from their unperturbed values. Interaction between quantum and cl…
In this work we investigate the dynamical Casimir effect in a nonideal cavity by deriving an effective Hamiltonian. We first compute a general expression for the average number of particle creation, applicable for any law of motion of the cavity boundary. We also compute a general expression for the linear entropy of an arbitrary state prepared in a selected mode, also applicable for any law of motion of the cavity boundary. As an application of our results we have analyzed both the average number of particle creation and linear entropy within a particular oscillatory motion of the cavity boun…
In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems we determine the degree of quantum decoherence and classical correlations of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a thermal bath. The transition from quantum to classical behaviour of the considered system is analyzed and it is shown that the classicality takes place during a finite interval of time. We calculate also the decoherence time and show that it has the same scale as the time after which statistical fluctuations become comparable with quantum fluctuations.
The quantum optical problem of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a nonlinear waveguide is related to the solutions of the classical nonstationary harmonic oscillator using the method of linear integrals of motion [ Malkin et.al., Phys Rev. 2D (1970) p.1371 ]. An explicit solution of the classical oscillator with a varying frequency, corresponding to the light propagation in an anisotropic waveguide is obtained using the expressions for the quantum field fluctuations. Substitutions have been found which allow to establish connections of the linear and quadratic invariants of Malkin et…
By using the formalism of photon creation operators, we present the simplest description of the effect of quantum teleportation and describe its closest classical analog.
Quantum dissipation is studied within two model oscillators, the Caldirola-Kanai (CK) oscillator as an open system with one degree of freedom and the Bateman-Feshbach-Tikochinsky (BFT) oscillator as a closed system with two degrees of freedom. Though these oscillators describe the same classical damped motion, the CK oscillator retains the quantum coherence, whereas the damped subsystem of the BFT oscillator exhibits both quantum decoherence and classical correlation. Furthermore the amplified subsystem of the BFT oscillator shows the same degree of quantum decohernce and classical correlation…
We report that upon excitation by a single pulse, the classical harmonic oscillator immersed in classical electromagnetic zero-point radiation, as described by random electrodynamics, exhibits a quantized excitation spectrum in agreement to that of the quantum harmonic oscillator. This numerical result is interesting in view of the generally accepted idea that classical theories do not support quantized energy spectra.
In a previous paper [J.S.Briggs and A.Eisfeld, Phys.Rev.A 85, 052111] we showed that the time-development of the complex amplitudes of N coupled quantum states can be mapped by the time development of positions and velocities of N coupled classical oscillators. Here we examine to what extent this mapping can be realised to simulate the "quantum" properties of entanglement and qubit manipulation. By working through specific examples, e.g. of quantum gate operation, we seek to illuminate quantum/classical differences which hitherto have been treated more mathematically. In addition we show that …
The classical dynamical system possessing a quantum spectrum of energy and "quantum" behavior is suggested and investigated. The proposed model can be considered as a dynamical variant of the old quantum theory for harmonic oscillator in which the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule is absent and "quantum-mechanical" properties are the result of system behavior itself. For this dynamical system the classical model of Franck-Hertz experiment which allows explaining the experimentally observed regularities is suggested and investigated. The examples of calculations of Franck-Hertz experiment of wi…
In this work a classical linear harmonic oscillator, evolving during a small time interval (so that simple non-linear, second order Taylor approximation of the dynamics is satisfied) and restarting (by a mechanism) in a strictly chosen series of the time moments, is considered. It is shown that given linear oscillator behaves dynamically analogously to discrete logistic equation, which, as an especial case, includes chaotic (fractal) behaviour too. (All this refers too on the analogous quantum systems, e.g. ammonia molecule with simple vibration dynamics of the atoms many times perturbed by me…
The mapping of the Wigner distribution function (WDF) for a given bound-state onto a semiclassical distribution function (SDF) satisfying the Liouville equation introduced previously by us is applied to the ground state of the Morse oscillator. Here we give results showing that the SDF gets closer to the corresponding WDF as the number of levels of the Morse oscillator increases. We find that for a Morse oscillator with one level only, the agreement between the WDF and the mapped SDF is very poor but for a Morse oscillator of ten levels it becomes satisfactory.
In the first days of quantum mechanics Dirac pointed out an analogy between the time-dependent coefficients of an expansion of the Schrödinger equation and the classical position and momentum variables solving Hamilton's equations. Here it is shown that the analogy can be made an equivalence in that, in principle, systems of classical oscillators can be constructed whose position and momenta variables form time-dependent amplitudes which are identical to the complex quantum amplitudes of the coupled wavefunction of an N-level quantum system with real coupling matrix elements. Hence classical m…
The creation of quantum coherences requires a system to be anharmonic. The simplest such continuous 1D quantum system is the Kerr oscillator. It has a number of interesting symmetries we derive. Its quantum dynamics is best studied in phase space, using Wigner's distribution W and the associated Wigner phase space current J. Expressions for the continuity equation governing its time evolution are derived in terms of J and it is shown that J for Kerr oscillators follows circles in phase space. Using J we also show that the evolution's classical shear in phase space is quantum suppressed by an e…
The frequency of a classical periodic system and the energy levels of the corresponding quantum system can both be obtained using action variables. We demonstrate the construction of two forms of the action variable for a one dimensional harmonic oscillator in classical, relativistic and quantum regimes. The relativistic effects are considered as perturbative, within the context of a non-relativistic quantum formalism. The transition of the relativistic quantum system to both classical relativistic and classical non-relativistic regimes is illustrated in a unified framework. Formulas for the f…
We study the classical and quantum perturbation theory for two non--resonant oscillators coupled by a nonlinear quartic interaction. In particular we analyze the question of quantum corrections to the torus quantization of the classical perturbation theory (semiclassical mechanics). We obtain up to the second order of perturbation theory an explicit analytical formula for the quantum energy levels, which is the semiclassical one plus quantum corrections. We compare the "exact" quantum levels obtained numerically to the semiclassical levels studying also the effects of quantum corrections.
