The beta Weibull distribution was introduced by Famoye et al. (2005) and studied by these authors. However, they do not give explicit expressions for the moments. We now derive explicit closed form expressions for the cumulative distribution function and for the moments of this distribution. We also give an asymptotic expansion for the moment generating function. Further, we discuss maximum likelihood estimation and provide formulae for the elements of the Fisher information matrix. We also demonstrate the usefulness of this distribution on a real data set.
In this paper we study a broad class of distribution functions which is defined by means of reflected generalized beta distribution. In particular, we use this class to extend the Inverse Weibull distribution in order to obtain the Reflected Generalized Beta Inverse Weibull Distribution. For this new distribution, moments, entropy, order statistics and a reliability measure are derived. The link between the Inverse Weibull and the Dagum distribution is generalized. Then the maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters…

The mathematical properties of a family of generalized beta distribution, including beta-normal, skewed-t, log-F, beta-exponential, beta-Weibull distributions have recently been studied in several publications. This paper applies these distributions to the modeling of the size distribution of income and computes the maximum likelihood estimation estimates of parameters. Their performances are compared to the widely used generalized beta distributions of the first and second types in terms of measures of goodness of fit.
Recent development in high-dimensional statistical inference has necessitated concentration inequalities for a broader range of random variables. We focus on sub-Weibull random variables, which extend sub-Gaussian or sub-exponential random variables to allow heavy-tailed distributions. This paper presents concentration inequalities for independent sub-Weibull random variables with finite Generalized Bernstein-Orlicz norms, providing generalized Bernstein's inequalities and Rosenthal-type moment bounds. The tightness of the proposed bounds is shown through lower bounds of the concentration ineq…
In this paper we introduce, for the first time, the Weibull-Geometric distribution which generalizes the exponential-geometric distribution proposed by Adamidis and Loukas (1998). The hazard function of the last distribution is monotone decreasing but the hazard function of the new distribution can take more general forms. Unlike the Weibull distribution, the proposed distribution is useful for modeling unimodal failure rates. We derive the cumulative distribution and hazard functions, the density of the order statistics and calculate expressions for its moments and for the moments of the orde…
Weibull distribution has received a wide range of applications in engineering and science. The utility and usefulness of an estimator is highly subject to the field of practitioner's study. In practice users looking for their desired estimator under different setting of parameters and sample sizes. In this paper we focus on two topics. Firstly, we propose $U$-statistics for the Weibull distribution parameters. The consistency and asymptotically normality of the introduced $U$-statistics are proved theoretically and by simulations. Several of methods have been proposed for estimating the parame…

This class includes some well-known mixing distributions, such as the Weibull power series (Morais and Barreto-Souza, 2010) and exponential power series (Chahkandi and Ganjali, 2009) distributions. Some mathematical properties of the new class are studied including moments and generating function. We provide the density fun…

This distribution contains several lifetime models such as: exponentiated weibull-geometric (EWG), exponentiated weibull-binomial (EWB), expon…

In this paper, we propose methods for the estimation of parameters for the three-parameter Reflected Weibull distribution. The Moment estimator , Maximum likelihood estimator and Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator. The Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator is based on a data transformation, which avoids the problem of unbounded likelihood estimator. Through Mont Carlo simulations, we further show that the Location and Scale Parameters free maximum likelihood estimator performs better than methods moment and maximum likelihood estimator in …
This paper extends the empirical minimum divergence approach for models which satisfy linear constraints with respect to the probability measure of the underlying variable (moment constraints) to the case where such constraints pertain to its quantile measure (called here semi parametric quantile models). The case when these constraints describe shape conditions as handled by the L-moments is considered and both the description of these models as well as the resulting non classical minimum divergence procedures are presented. These models describe neighborhoods of classical models used mainly …

Its failure rate function can be increasing, decreasing, upside-down bathtub shaped, bathtub-shaped or modified bathtub shaped depending on its parameters. Some structural properties of the proposed model are investigated including expansions for the cumulative and density functions, moments, generating function, mean deviations, order statistics and reliability. The maximum likelihood estimation method is use…
We propose a new $L^2$-type goodness-of-fit test for the family of beta distributions based on a conditional moment characterisation. The asymptotic null distribution is identified, and since it depends on the underlying parameters, a parametric bootstrap procedure is proposed. Consistency against all alternatives that satisfy a convergence criterion is shown, and a Monte Carlo simulation study indicates that the new procedure outperforms most of the classical tests. Finally, the procedure is applied to a real data set related to air humidity.

We introduce a new five-parameter family of size distributions on the semi-finite interval $[x_0, \infty), x_0 \geqslant 0$, with two attractive features. First, it interpolates between power laws, such as the Pareto distribution, and power laws with exponential cut-off, such as the Weibull distribution. The proposed family is thus very flexible and spans over a broad range of well-known size distributions which are special cases of our family. Second, it has important tractability advantages over the popular five-parameter Generalized Beta distribution. We derive the hazard function, survival…
In this paper we propose a new family of distribution considering Generalized Marshal-Olkin distribution as the base line distribution in the Beta-G family of Construction. The new family includes Beta-G (Eugene et al. 2002 and Jones, 2004) and (Jayakumar and Mathew, 2008) families as particular cases. Probability density function (pdf) and the cumulative distribution function (cdf) are expressed as mixture of the Marshal-Olkin (Marshal and Olkin, 1997) distribution. Series expansions of pdf of the order statistics are also obtained. Moments, moment generating function, Rényi entropies, quanti…
In this paper, we address the problem of testing goodness-of-fit for discrete distributions, where we focus on the geometric distribution. We define new likelihood-based goodness-of-fit tests using the beta-geometric distribution and the type I discrete Weibull distribution as alternative distributions. The tests are compared in a simulation study, where also the classical goodness-of-fit tests are considered for comparison. Throughout the paper we consider conditional testing given a minimal sufficient statistic under the null hypothesis, which enables the calculation of exact p-values. For t…

We discuss estimation of the parameters by maximum likelihood and provide the information matrix. We observe in one application to real data set t…
A six parameter distribution so-called the McDonald modified Weibull distribution is defined and studied. The new distribution contains, as special submodels, several important distributions discussed in the literature, such as the beta modified Weibull, Kumaraswamy modified Weibull, McDonald Weibull and modified Weibull distribution, among others. The new distribution can be used effectively in the analysis of survival data since it accommodates monotone, unimodal and bathtub-shaped hazard functions. We derive the moments. We propose the method of maximum likelihood for estimating the model par…
The beta normal distribution is a generalization of both the normal distribution and the normal order statistics. Some of its mathematical properties and a few applications have been studied in the literature. We provide a better foundation for some properties and an analytical study of its bimodality. The hazard rate function and the limiting behavior are examined. We derive explicit expressions for moments, generating function, mean deviations using a power series expansion for the quantile function, and Shannon entropy.

This distribution contains several lifetime models such as generalized Gompertz, generalized Gompertz-geometric, generalized Gompertz-poisson, generalized Gompe…
Nadarajah and Gupta (2004) introduced the beta Fréchet (BF) distribution, which is a generalization of the exponentiated Fréchet (EF) and Fréchet distributions, and obtained the probability density and cumulative distribution functions. However, they do not investigated its moments and the order statistics. In this paper the BF density function and the density function of the order statistics are expressed as linear combinations of Fréchet density functions. This is important to obtain some mathematical properties of the BF distribution in terms of the corresponding properties of the Fréchet d…
We study with some details a lifetime model of the class of beta generalized models, called the beta inverse Rayleigh distribution, which is a special case of the Beta Fréchet distribution. We provide a better foundation for some properties including quantile function, moments, mean deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, Rényi and Shannon entropies and order statistics. We fit the proposed model using maximum likelihood estimation to a real data set to illustrate its flexibility and potentiality.
In this paper we introduce a new method to add a parameter to a family of distributions. We obtain several mathematical properties of the new class of distributions such as Kullback-Leibler divergence, Shannon entropy, moments, order statistics, estimation of the parameters and inference for large sample. Further, we showed that the new distribution have the reference distribution as special case, and that the usual inference procedures also hold in this case. Furthermore, we ap…

A generalization of the generalized inverse Weibull distribution so-called transmuted generalized inverse Weibull dis- tribution is proposed and studied. We will use the quadratic rank transmutation map (QRTM) in order to generate a flexible family of probability distributions taking generalized inverse Weibull distribution as the base value distribution by introducing a new parameter that would offer more distributional flexibility. Various structural properties including explicit expressions for the mo- ments, quantiles, and moment generating function of the new dis- tribution are derived. We…
This paper introduces a polynomial transformation model based on Weibull distribution, whereby the analytical representation of the quantile function for many probability distributions can be obtained. Firstly, the target random variable $x$ with specified distribution is expressed as a polynomial of a Weibull random variable $z$, the coefficients are conveniently determined by the percentile matching method. Then, substituting $z$ with its quantile function $z=λ[-ln(1-u)]^{1/k}$ gives the analytical expression of the quantile function of $x$. Furthermore, using the probability weighted moment…
Characterizing the wind speed distribution properly is essential for the satisfactory production of potential energy in wind farms, being the mixture models usually employed in the description of such data. However, some mixture models commonly have the undesirable property of non-identifiability. In this work, we present an alternative distribution which is able to fit the wind speed data adequately. The new model, called Normal-Weibull-Weibull, is identifiable and its cumulative distribution function is written as a composition of two baseline functions. We discuss structural properties of t…
This paper presents a complete methodology for Bayesian inference on a semi-Markov process, from the elicitation of the prior distribution, to the computation of posterior summaries, including a guidance for its JAGS implementation. The holding times (conditional on the transition between two given states) are assumed to be Weibull-distributed. We examine the elicitation of the joint prior density of the shape and scale parameters of the Weibull distributions, deriving a specific class of priors in a natural way, along with a method for the determination of hyperparameters based on ``learning …
The beta distribution is the best-known distribution for modelling doubly-bounded data, \eg percentage data or probabilities. A new generalization of the beta distribution is proposed, which uses a cubic transformation of the beta random variable. The new distribution is label-invariant like the beta distribution and has rational expressions for the moments. This facilitates its use in mean regression. The properties are discussed, and two examples of fitting to data are given. A modification is also explored in which the Jacobian of the transformation is omitted. This gives rise to messier ex…
This paper considers the issue of modeling fractional data observed in the interval [0,1), (0,1] or [0,1]. Mixed continuous-discrete distributions are proposed. The beta distribution is used to describe the continuous component of the model since its density can have quite diferent shapes depending on the values of the two parameters that index the distribution. Properties of the proposed distributions are examined. Also, maximum likelihood and method of moments estimation is discussed. Finally, practical applications that employ real data are presented.
