In a recent paper, Doran, Greene and Judes considered one parameter families of quintic threefolds with finite symmetry groups. A surprising result was that each of these six families has the same Picard Fuchs equation associated to the holomorphic 3-form. In this paper we give an easy argument, involving the family of Mirror Quintics, which implies this result. Using a construction due to Shioda, we also relate certain quotients of these one parameter families to the family of Mirror Quintics. Our constructions generalize to degree n Calabi Yau varieties in (n-1)-dimensional projective space.
We give an elementary approach to proving the birationality of multiple Berglund-Hübsch-Krawitz (BHK) mirrors by using Shioda maps. We do this by creating a birational picture of the BHK correspondence in general. Although a similar result has been obtained in recent months by Shoemaker, our proof is new in that it sidesteps using toric geometry and drops an unnecessary hypothesis. We give an explicit quotient of a Fermat variety to which the mirrors are birational.
Aided by mirror symmetry, we determine the number of holomorphic disks ending on the real Lagrangian in the quintic threefold. The tension of the domainwall between the two vacua on the brane, which is the generating function for the open Gromov-Witten invariants, satisfies a certain extension of the Picard-Fuchs differential equation governing periods of the mirror quintic. We verify consistency of the monodromies under analytic continuation of the superpotential over the entire moduli space. We reproduce the first few instanton numbers by a localization computation directly in the A-model, a…
We study a certain family of determinantal quintic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$ whose singularities are similar to the well-studied Barth-Nieto quintic. Smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with Hodge numbers $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(52,2)$ are obtained by taking crepant resolutions of the singularities. It turns out that these smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds are in a two dimensional mirror family to the complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^{4}\times\mathbb{P}^{4}$ which have appeared in our previous study of Reye congruences in dimension three. We compactify the two dimensional fam…
We derive a closed formula for the generating function of genus two Gromov-Witten invariants of quintic 3-folds and verify the corresponding mirror symmetry conjecture of Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa.
We give a description of the relative Hilbert scheme of lines in the Dwork pencil of quintic threefolds. We describe the corresponding relative Hilbert scheme associated to the mirror family of quintic threefolds.
The general quintic hypersurface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ is the most famous example of a Calabi--Yau threefold for which mirror symmetry has been investigated in detail. There is a description of the mirror as a hypersurface in a certain weighted projective space. In this note we present a model for the mirror which is again (the resolution of) a quintic hypersurface in ${\mathbb P}^4$. We also deal with the special members in the respective families. They lead to rigid Calabi--Yau threefolds with interesting arithmetical properties. In the last section we try to find a similarly nice model for the…
The celebrated Mirror Theorem states that the genus zero part of the A model (quantum cohomology, rational curves counting) of the Fermat quintic threefold is equivalent to the B model (complex deformation, variation of Hodge structure) of its mirror dual orbifold. In this article, we establish a mirror-dual statement. Namely, the B model of the Fermat quintic threefold is shown to be equivalent to the A model of its mirror, and hence establishes the mirror symmetry as a true duality.
Our earlier proof of mirror formulas for genus 0 Gromov -- Witten invariants of Fano and Calabi -- Yau toric complete intersections is illustrated in the example of quintic 3-folds.
We prove a version of the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the mirror quintic. In particular we calculate the genus-zero FJRW theory for the pair (W, G) where W is the Fermat quintic polynomial and G = SL(W). We identify it with the Gromov-Witten theory of the mirror quintic three-fold via an explicit analytic continuation and symplectic transformation. In the process we prove a mirror theorem for the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg model (W,G).
The quintic-mirror family is a well-known one-parameter family of Calabi-Yau threefolds. A complete description of the global monodromy group of this family is not yet known. In this paper, we give a presentation of the global monodromy group in the general linear group of degree 4 over the ring of integers modulo 5.
For all $m > 0$ we build a two-dimensional family of smooth manifolds of real dimension $3m + 2$ and use it to interpolate between the anticanonical family in the complex projective space of dimension $m + 1$ and its mirror dual. The main tool is the notion of self-dual manifold.
Irrational invariants from D-brane superpotentials are pursued on the mirror quintic, systematically according to the degree of a representative curve. Lines are completely understood: the contribution from isolated lines vanishes. All other lines can be deformed holomorphically to the van Geemen lines, whose superpotential is determined via the associated inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation. Substantial progress is made for conics: the families found by Mustata contain conics reducible to isolated lines, hence they have a vanishing superpotential. The search for all conics invariant under a r…
In this article we construct Lagrangian torus fibrations for general quintic \cy hypersurfaces near the large complex limit and their mirror manifolds using gradient flow method. Then we prove the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror conjecture for this class of \cy manifolds in symplectic category.
We prove homological mirror symmetry for the quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The proof follows that for the quartic surface by Seidel (arXiv:math/0310414) closely, and uses a result of Sheridan (arXiv:1012.3238). In contrast to Sheridan's approach (arXiv:1111.0632), our proof gives the compatibility of homological mirror symmetry for the projective space and its Calabi-Yau hypersurface.
We prove the genus-one restriction of the all-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau conjecture of Chiodo and Ruan, stated in terms of the geometric quantization of an explicit symplectomorphism determined by genus-zero invariants. This provides the first evidence supporting the higher-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic threefold, and exhibits the first instance of the "genus zero controls higher genus" principle, in the sense of Givental's quantization formalism, for non-semisimple cohomological field theories.
We compute the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of the Batyrev mirror orbifold of a smooth quintic hypersurface in 4-dimensional projective space. We identify the obstruction bundle for this example by using the Riemann bilinear relations for periods. We outline a general method of computing the Chen-Ruan ring for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective simplicial toric varieties, modulo a conjecture that the Riemann bilinear relations are adequate for identifying the obstruction bundle for any complex orbifold.
We give a mathematical account of a recent string theory calculation which predicts the number of rational curves on the generic quintic threefold. Our account involves the interpretation of Yukawa couplings in terms of variations of Hodge structure, a new $q$-expansion principle for functions on the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds, and the ``mirror symmetry'' phenomenon recently observed by string theorists.
For the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold and the theory of stability conditions [Bri07], there have been two mathematical aims given by physical reasoning. One is that we should define stability conditions by central charges of quintic periods [Hos04,Kon12,KonSoi13], which extend the Gamma class [KKP,Iri09,Iri11]. The other is that for well-motivated stability conditions on a derived Fukaya-type category, each stable object should be a Lagrangian [ThoYau]. We answer affirmatively to these aims with the simplest homological mirror symmetry (HMS for short) of the Fermat Calabi-Yau threefold [Oka09,Fu…
We correct the definitions and descriptions of the integral structures in [U14]. The previous flat basis in [ibid] is characterized by the Frobenius solutions and integral in the first approximation by mean of the graded quotients of monodromy filtration, but not integral in the strict sense. In this article, we use the integral structure of Iritani in [I11] for A-model. Using this precise version, we study open mirror symmetry for quintic threefolds through log mixed Hodge theory, especially the recent result on Neron models for admissible normal functions with non-torsion extensions in the j…
We describe a strategy for computing Yukawa couplings and the mirror map, based on the Picard-Fuchs equation. (Our strategy is a variant of the method used by Candelas, de la Ossa, Green, and Parkes in the case of quintic hypersurfaces.) We then explain a technique of Griffiths which can be used to compute the Picard-Fuchs equations of hypersurfaces. Finally, we carry out the computation for four specific examples (including quintic hypersurfaces, previously done by Candelas et al.). This yields predictions for the number of rational curves of various degrees on certain hypersurfaces in weight…
Holomorphic disk invariants with boundary in the real Lagrangian of a quintic 3-fold are calculated by localization and proven mirror transforms. A careful discussion of the underlying virtual intersection theory is included. The generating function for the disk invariants is shown to satisfy an extension of the Picard-Fuchs differential equations associated to the mirror quintic. The Ooguri-Vafa multiple cover formula is used to define virtually enumerative disk invariants. The results may also be viewed as providing a virtual enumeration of real rational curves on the quintic.
We use tropical curves and toric degeneration techniques to construct closed embedded Lagrangian rational homology spheres in a lot of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We apply this construction to the tropical curves obtained from the 2875 lines on the quintic Calabi-Yau threefold. Each admissible tropical curve gives a Lagrangian rational homology sphere in the corresponding mirror quintic threefold and disjoint curves give pairwise homologous but non-Hamiltonian isotopic Lagrangians. We check in an example that $>300$ mutually disjoint curves (and hence Lagrangians) arise. We show that the weight of …
In this article we study a differential algebra of modular-type functions attached to the periods of a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau varieties which is mirror dual to the universal family of quintic threefolds. Such an algebra is generated by seven functions satisfying functional and differential equations in parallel to the modular functional equations of classical Eisenstein series and the Ramanujan differential equation. Our result is the first example of automorphic-type functions attached to varieties whose period domain is not Hermitian symmetric. It is a reformulation and realizati…
This paper focuses on a topological version on the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror symmetry conjecture. Roughly put, the SYZ conjecture suggests that mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau manifolds are related by the existence of dual special Lagrangian torus fibrations. We explore this conjecture without reference to the special Lagrangian condition. In this setting, natural questions include: does there exist a nice class of T^3-fibrations for which the dual fibration can be constructed? Do such fibrations exist on a manifold such as the quintic threefold? If so, is the dual fibration the mirror? We answe…
We calculate the matrix of the Frobenius map on the middle dimensional cohomology of the one parameter family that is related by mirror symmetry to the family of all quintic threefolds.
In this paper, we will study the connections between the mirror symmetry of K3 surfaces and the geometry of the Legendre family of elliptic curves. We will prove that the mirror map of the Dwork family is equal to the period map of the Legendre family. This result provides an interesting explanation to the modularities of counting functions for K3 surfaces from the mirror symmetry point of view. We will also discuss the relations between the arithmetic geometry of smooth fibers of the Fermat pencil (Dwork family) and that of the smooth fibers of the Legendre family, e.g. Shioda-Inose structure…

In this paper we investigate the properties of series of vacua in the string theory landscape. In particular, we study minima to the flux potential in type IIB compactifications on the mirror quintic. Using geometric transitions, we embed its one dimensional complex structure moduli space in that of another Calabi-Yau with h^{1,1}=86 and h^{2,1}=2. We then show how to construct infinite series of continuously connected minima to the mirror quintic potential by moving into this larger moduli space, applying its monodromies, and moving back. We provide an example of such series, and discuss thei…
At special loci in their moduli spaces, Calabi-Yau manifolds are endowed with discrete symmetries. Over the years, such spaces have been intensely studied and have found a variety of important applications. As string compactifications they are phenomenologically favored, and considerably simplify many important calculations. Mathematically, they provided the framework for the first construction of mirror manifolds, and the resulting rational curve counts. Thus, it is of significant interest to investigate such manifolds further. In this paper, we consider several unexplored loci within familia…
We show how the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic three-fold can be cast into a global mirror symmetry framework. Then we draw inspiration from Berglund-Hübsch mirror duality construction to provide an analogue conjectural picture featuring all Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces within weighted projective spaces and certain quotients by finite abelian group actions.
We show that certain hypergeometric series used to formulate mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, in string theory and algebraic geometry, satisfy a number of interesting properties. Many of these properties are used in separate papers to verify the BCOV prediction for the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of a quintic threefold and more generally to compute the genus one Gromov-Witten invariants of any Calabi-Yau projective hypersurface.
One of the attractions of homological mirror symmetry is that it not only implies the previous predictions of mirror symmetry (e.g., curve counts on the quintic), but it should in some sense be `less of a coincidence' than they are and therefore easier to prove. In this survey we explain how Seidel's approach to mirror symmetry via versality at the large volume/large complex structure limit makes this idea precise.
We consider the fourteen families $W$ of Calabi-Yau threefolds with one complex structure parameter and Picard-Fuchs equation of hypergeometric type, like the mirror of the quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$. Mirror symmetry identifies the masses of even--dimensional D--branes of the mirror Calabi-Yau $M$ with four periods of the holomorphic $(3,0)$-form over a symplectic basis of $H_3(W,\mathbb{Z})$. It was discovered by Chad Schoen that the singular fiber at the conifold of the quintic gives rise to a Hecke eigenform of weight four under $Γ_0(25)$, whose Hecke eigenvalues are determined by the Hasse-…
We prove an explicit formula for the genus-one Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariants associated to the quintic threefold, verifying the genus-one mirror conjecture of Huang, Klemm, and Quackenbush. The proof involves two steps. The first step uses localization on auxiliary moduli spaces to compare the usual Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariants with a semisimple theory of twisted invariants. The second step uses the genus-one formula for semisimple cohomological field theories to compute the twisted invariants explicitly.
In this paper, we determine mod $2$ Galois representations $\barρ_{ψ,2}:G_K:={\rm Gal}(\bar{K}/K)\longrightarrow {\rm GSp}_4(\mathbb{F}_2)$ associated to the mirror motives of rank 4 with pure weight 3 coming from the Dwork quintic family $$X^5_0+X^5_1+X^5_2+X^5_3+X^5_4-5ψX_0X_1X_2X_3X_4=0,\ ψ\in K$$ defined over a number field $K$ under the irreducibility condition of the quintic trinomial $f_ψ$ below. Applying this result, when $K=F$ is a totally real field, for some at most qaudratic totally real extension $M/F$, we prove that $\barρ_{ψ,2}|_{G_M}$ is associated to a Hilbert-Siegel modular H…
We construct fiber-preserving anti-symplectic involutions for a large class of symplectic manifolds with Lagrangian torus fibrations. In particular, we treat the K3 surface and the quintic threefold. We interpret our results as corroboration of the view that in homological mirror symmetry, an anti-symplectic involution is the mirror of duality. In the same setting, we construct fiber-preserving symplectomorphisms that can be interpreted as the mirror to twisting by a holomorphic line bundle.
We study some arithmetic properties of the mirror maps and the quantum Yukawa coupling for some 1-parameter deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds. First we use the Schwarzian differential equation, which we derived previously, to characterize the mirror map in each case. For algebraic K3 surfaces, we solve the equation in terms of the $J$-function. By deriving explicit modular relations we prove that some K3 mirror maps are algebraic over the genus zero function field ${\bf Q}(J)$. This leads to a uniform proof that those mirror maps have integral Fourier coefficients. Regarding the maps as Rie…
The mathematical physicists Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa (BCOV) proposed, in a seminal article from '94, a conjecture extending genus zero mirror symmetry to higher genera. With a view towards a refined formulation of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem, we offer a mathematical description of the BCOV conjecture at genus one. As an application of the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem of Gillet-Soulé and of our previous results on the BCOV invariant, we establish this conjecture for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our contribution takes place on the $B$-side, and together with …
