A two level model of a single molecule undergoing spectral diffusion dynamics and interacting with a sequence of two short laser pulses is investigated. Analytical solution for the probability of n=0,1,2 photon emission events for the telegraph and Gaussian processes are obtained. We examine under what circumstances the photon statistics emerging from such pump-probe set up provides new information on the stochastic process parameters, and what are the measurement limitations of this technique. The impulsive and selective limits, the semiclassical approximation, and the fast modulation limit, exhibit general behaviors of this new type of spectroscopy. We show, that in the fast modulation limit, where one has to use impulsive pulses in order to obtain meaningful results, the information on the photon statistics is contained in the molecule's dipole correlation function, equivalently to continuous wave experiments. In contrast, the photon statistics obtained within the selective limit depends on the both spectral shifts and rates and exhibits oscillations, which are not found in the corresponding line-shape.
Single molecule spectroscopy aims at unveiling often hidden but potentially very important contributions of single entities to a system's ensemble response. Albeit contributing tremendously to our ever growing understanding of molecular processes the fundamental question of temporal evolution, or change, has thus far been inaccessible, resulting in a static picture of a dynamic world. Here, we finally resolve this dilemma by performing the first ultrafast time-resolved transient spectroscopy on a single molecule. By tracing the femtosecond evolution of excited electronic state spectra of singl…
We report on precision spectroscopy of sub-wavelength confined molecular gases. This was obtained by rovibrational selective reflection of $\mathrm{NH_3}$ and $\mathrm{SF_6}$ gases using a quantum cascade laser at $λ\approx 10.6 μm$. Our technique probes molecules at micrometric distances ($\approx λ/2π$) from the window of a macroscopic cell with sub-MHz resolution, allowing molecule-surface interaction spectroscopy. We exploit the linearity and high-resolution of our technique to gain novel spectroscopic information on the $\mathrm{SF_6}$ greenhouse gas, useful for enriching molecular databa…
We suggest an approach to detect the conformation of single molecule by using the photon counting statistics. The generalized Smoluchoswki equation is employed to describe the dynamical process of conformational change of single molecule. The resonant trajectories of the emission photon numbers $<N >$ and the Mandel's $Q$ parameter, in the space of conformational coordinates $\bm{\mathcal{X}}$ and frequency $ω_L$ of external field ($\bm{\mathcal{X}}-ω_L$ space), can be used to rebuild the conformation of the single molecule. As an example, we consider Thioflavin T molecule. It demonstrates tha…
The interaction of a molecule with the quantized electromagnetic field of a nano-cavity gives rise to light-induced conical intersections between polaritonic potential energy surfaces. We demonstrate for a realistic model of a polyatomic molecule that the time-resolved ultrafast radiative emission of the cavity enables to follow both nuclear wavepacket dynamics on and nonadiabatic population transfer between polaritonic surfaces without applying a probe pulse. The latter provides an unambiguous (and in principle experimentally accessible) dynamical fingerprint of light-induced conical intersec…
The structure of Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) light-harvesting complex has long been recognized as containing seven bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) molecules. Recently, an additional BChl molecule was discovered in the crystal structure of the FMO complex, which may serve as a link between baseplate and the remaining seven molecules. Here, we investigate excitation energy transfer (EET) process by simulating single-molecule pump-dump experiment in the eight-molecules complex. We adopt the coherent modified Redfield theory and non-Markovian quantum jump method to simulate EET dynamics. This scheme pro…
High-harmonic spectroscopy has become an essential ingredient in probing various ultrafast electronic processes in solids with sub-cycle temporal resolution. Despite its immense importance, sensitivity of high-harmonic spectroscopy to phonon dynamics in solids is not well known. This work addresses this critical question and demonstrates the potential of high-harmonic spectroscopy in probing intertwined phonon-electron dynamics in solids. A pump pulse excites in-plane optical phonon modes in monolayer graphene and a circularly polarised pulse is employed to probe the excited phonon dynamics th…
We propose using halogenated organic dyes as nanoprobes for electric field and show their greatly enhanced Stark coefficients using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We analyse halogenated variants of three molecules that have been of interest for cryogenic single molecule spectroscopy, perylene, terrylene, and dibenzoterrylene, with the zero-phonon optical transitions at blue, red, and near infrared. Out of all the combinations of halides and binding sites that are calculated, we have found that fluorination of the optimum binding site induces a dipole difference between ground an…
Symmetry breaking caused by geometric fluctuations can enable processes that are otherwise forbidden. An example is a perylene bisimide dyad whose dipole moments are perpendicular to each other. Förster-type energy transfer is thus forbidden at the equilibrium geometry since the dipolar coupling vanishes. Yet, fluctuations of the geometric arrangement have been shown to induce finite energy transfer that depends on the dipole variance, rather than the mean. We demonstrate an analogous effect associated with chirality symmetry breaking. In its equilibrium geometry this dimer is non chiral. The …
The strong coupling between intense laser fields and valence electrons in molecules causes a distortion of the potential energy hypersurfaces which determine the motion of nuclei in a molecule and influences possible reaction pathways. The coupling strength varies with the angle between the light electric field and valence orbital, and thereby adds another dimension to the effective molecular potential energy surface, allowing for the emergence of light-induced conical intersections. Here, we demonstrate in theory and experiment that the full complexity of such light-induced potential energy s…
This review article discusses advances in the use of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy for the study of non-adiabatic processes in molecules. A theoretical treatment of the experiments is presented together with a number of experimental examples.
Functionalization of polyoxotungstates with organoarsonate co-ligands enabling surface decoration was explored for the triangular cluster architectures of the composition [CoII9(H2O)6(OH)3(p-RC6H4AsVO3)2(α-PV2WVI15O56)3]25-({Co9(P2W15)3}, R = H or NH2), isolated as Na25[Co9(OH)3(H2O)6(C6H5AsO3)2(P2W15O56)3]86H2O (Na-1) and Na25[Co9(OH)3(H2O)6(H2NC6H4AsO3)2(P2W15O56)3]86H2O (Na-2). The axially oriented para-aminophenyl groups in 2 facilitate the formation of self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces, and thus provide a viable molecular platform for charge transport studies of magnetically func…
Cavity-enhanced frequency comb spectroscopy for molecule detection in the mid-infrared powerfully combines high resolution, high sensitivity, and broad spectral coverage. However, this technique, and essentially all spectroscopic methods, is limited in application to relatively small, simple molecules. Here we integrate comb spectroscopy with continuous, cold samples of molecules produced via buffer gas cooling, thus enabling the study of significantly more complex molecules. We report simultaneous gains in resolution, sensitivity, and bandwidth and demonstrate this combined capability with th…
A quantitative single-molecule tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) study at room temperature remained a challenge due to the rapid structural dynamics of molecules exposed to air. Here, we demonstrate the single-molecule level hyperspectral TERS imaging of brilliant cresyl blue (BCB) at room temperature for the first time, along with quantitative spectral analyses. Freeze-frame approach using a thin Al2O3 capping layer, which suppresses spectral diffusions and inhibits chemical reactions and contaminations in air, enabled reliable and robust chemical imaging. For the molecules resolved spat…
We report on two-photon photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy of ultracold heteronuclear LiRb molecules. This is used to determine the binding energies of the loosely bound levels of the electronic ground singlet and the lowest triplet states of LiRb. We observe strong two-photon PA lines with power broadened line widths greater than 20 GHz at relatively low laser intensity of 30 W/cm$^{2}$. The implication of this observation on direct atom to molecule conversion using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is discussed and the prospect for electronic ground state molecule production is the…
For over five decades, studies in the field of chemical physics and physical chemistry have primarily aimed to understand the quantum properties of molecules. However, high-resolution rovibronic spectroscopy has been limited to relatively small and simple systems because translationally and rotationally cold samples have not been prepared in sufficiently large quantities for large and complex systems. In this study, we present high-resolution rovibronic spectroscopy results for large gas-phase molecules, namely, free-base phthalocyanine (FBPc). The findings suggest that buffer-gas cooling may …
We develop a detailed theoretical model of photo-induced proton-coupled electron transfer (PPCET) processes, which are at the basis of solar energy harvesting in biological systems and photovoltaic materials. Our model enables to analyze the dynamics and the efficiency of a PPCET reaction under the influence of a thermal environment by disentangling the contribution of the fundamental electron transfer (ET) and proton transfer (PT) steps. In order to study quantum dynamics of the PPCET process under an interaction with non-Markovian environment we employ the hierarchical equations of motion (H…
Quantum light is a key resource for promoting quantum technology. One such class of technology aims to improve the precision of optical measurements using engineered quantum states of light. In this study, we investigate transmission measurement of frequency-entangled broadband photon pairs generated via parametric down-conversion with a monochromatic laser. It is observed that state-to-state dynamics in the system under study are temporally resolved by adjusting the path difference between the entangled twin beams when the entanglement time is sufficiently short. The non-classical photon corr…
Interacting dipole ($p$) bosons along with scalar ($s$) bosons, based on the ideas drawn from the interacting boson model of atomic nuclei, led to the development of the vibron model based on $U(4)$ spectrum generating algebra for diatomic molecules. The $U(4) \supset SO(4) \supset SO(3)$ algebra generates rotation-vibration spectra. Extending this to two coupled $SO(4)$ algebras and three $SO(4)$ algebras describe triatomic and four-atomic molecules respectively. Similarly, appropriately coupled $U(2) \supset SO(2)$ algebras will describe the stretching vibrations, with proper point group sym…
We discuss implications of a recent experimental breakthrough which uses a fluorescence-doped flexible semiconducting polymer to construct a single-molecule sensor which can detect ultra-weak forces in the molecular environment, with a grey scale down to 300 femtonewtons.
Owing to their high surface area, their high stability, and their hydrophobicity, periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials represent promising catalytic support for environmentally friendly chemical processes in water. We investigate here how the calcination of PMO material with benzene linkers (PMOB) allows its functionalization. Conventional and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP)-enhanced NMR spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy prove that calcination at 450 °C results in the oxidation of phenylene bridges int…
We demonstrate cryogenic buffer-gas cooling of gas-phase methyltrioxorhenium (MTO). This molecule is closely related to chiral organometallic molecules where the parity-violating energy differences between enantiomers may be measurable. The molecules are produced with a rotational temperature of approximately 6~K by laser ablation of an MTO pellet inside a cryogenic helium buffer gas cell. Facilitated by the low temperature, we demonstrate absorption spectroscopy of the 10.2~$μ$m antisymmetric Re=O stretching mode of MTO with a resolution of 8~MHz and a frequency accuracy of 30~MHz. We partial…
We report an experimental investigation on the Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy of buffer-gas-cooled Barium monofluoride (BaF) molecules in a 4~K cryogenic cell. The obtained spectra with a resolution of 19~MHz, much smaller than previously observed in absorption spectroscopy, clearly resolve the hyperfine transitions. Moreover, we use these high-resolution spectra to fit the hyperfine splittings of excited $A(v=0)$ state and find the hyperfine splitting of the laser-cooling-relevant $A^2Π_{1/2}(v=0, J=1/2, +)$ state is about 18 MHz, much higher than the previous theoretically pr…
We devise a phase-coherent three-pulse protocol to probe the polariton dynamics in a trapped-ion quantum simulation. In contrast to conventional nonlinear signals, the presented scheme does not change the number of excitations in the system, allowing for the investigation of the dynamics within an $N$-excitation manifold. In the particular case of a filling factor one ($N$ excitations in an $N$-ion chain), the proposed interaction induces coherent transitions between a delocalized phonon superfluid and a localized atomic insulator phase. Numerical simulations of a two-ion chain demonstrate tha…
Because of their central importance in chemistry and biology, water molecules have been the subject of decades of intense spectroscopic investigations. Rotational spectroscopy of water vapor has yielded detailed information about the structure and dynamics of isolated water molecules as well as water dimers and clusters. Nonlinear rotational spectroscopy in the terahertz regime has been developed recently to investigate the rotational dynamics of linear and symmetric-top molecules whose rotational energy levels are regularly spaced, but it has not previously been applied to water or other lowe…
The study of ultracold molecules tightly trapped in an optical lattice can expand the frontier of precision measurement and spectroscopy, and provide a deeper insight into molecular and fundamental physics. Here we create, probe, and image microkelvin $^{88}$Sr$_2$ molecules in a lattice, and demonstrate precise measurements of molecular parameters as well as coherent control of molecular quantum states using optical fields. We discuss the sensitivity of the system to dimensional effects, a new bound-to-continuum spectroscopy technique for highly accurate binding energy measurements, and prosp…
Interactions between particles in quantum many-body systems play a crucial role in determining the electric, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties of the system. The recent progress in the laser-pulse technique has enabled the manipulations and measurements of physical properties on ultrafast timescales. Here, we propose a method for the direct and ultrafast probing of quantum many-body interaction through coherent two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy. Up to a moderate interaction strength, the inter-particle interaction manifests itself in the emergence of off-diagonal peaks in the 2D spectr…
Enantiodetection of chiral molecules is important to pharmaceutical drug production, chemical reaction control, and biological function designs. Traditional optical methods of enantiodetection rely on the weak magnetic-dipole or electric-quadrupole interactions, and in turn suffer from the weak signal and low sensitivity. We propose a new optical enantiodetection method to determine the enantiomeric excess via two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy of the chiral mixture driven by three electromagnetic fields. The quantities of left- and right- handed chiral molecules are reflected by the intensitie…
Three-wave mixing spectroscopy of chiral molecules, which exist in left-handed and right-handed conformations, allows for enantio-selective population transfer despite random orientation of the molecules. This is based on constructive interference of the three-photon pathways for one enantiomer and destructive one for the other. We prove here that three mutually orthogonal polarization directions are required to this end. Two different dynamical regimes exist to realize enantio-selective population transfer, and we show that they correspond to different phase conditions in the three-wave mixin…
Rapid progress in cooling and trapping of molecules has enabled first experiments on high resolution spectroscopy of trapped diatomic molecules, promising unprecedented precision. Extending this work to polyatomic molecules provides unique opportunities due to more complex geometries and additional internal degrees of freedom. Here, this is achieved by combining a homogeneous-field microstructured electric trap, rotational transitions with minimal Stark broadening at a 'magic' offset electric field, and optoelectrical Sisyphus cooling of molecules to the low millikelvin temperature regime. We …
Trapped atoms and ions are among the best controlled quantum systems which find widespread applications in quantum information, sensing and metrology. For molecules, however, a similar degree of control is currently lacking owing to their complex energy-level structure. Quantum-logic protocols in which atomic ions serve as probes for molecular ions are a promising route for achieving this level of control, especially with homonuclear molecules that decouple from black-body radiation. Here, a quantum-non-demolition protocol on single trapped N$_2^+$ molecules is demonstrated. The spin-rovibroni…
