Detailed analysis of transport, magnetism and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films with thicknesses from 3 to 70 unit cells resulted in the identification of a lower critical thickness for a non-metallic, non-ferromagnetic layer at the interface with the SrTiO3 (001) substrate of only 3 unit cells (~12 Angstrom). Furthermore, linear dichroism measurements demonstrate the presence of a preferred (x2-y2) in-plane orbital ordering for all layer thicknesses without any orbital reconstruction at the interface. A crucial requirement for the accurate study of these ultrathin films is a controlled growth process, offering the coexistence of layer-by-layer growth and bulk-like magnetic/transport properties.
We report on the successful synthesis of highly conductive PdCoO2 ultrathin films on Al2O3 (0001) by pulsed laser deposition. The thin films grow along the c-axis of the layered delafossite structure of PdCoO2, corresponding to the alternating stacking of conductive Pd layers and CoO2 octahedra. The thickness-dependent transport measurement reveals that each Pd layer has a homogeneous sheet conductance as high as 5.5 mS in the samples thicker than the critical thickness of 2.1 nm. Even at the critical thickness, high conductivity exceeding 104 Scm-1 is achieved. Optical transmittance spectra e…
By using electrochemical etching, we fabricated conductive ultrathin SrVO3 (SVO) films that exhibited metallic behavior down to 3 monolayers (ML). From an observed systematic change in transport properties with decreasing film thickness, it was found that the disorder in the films remained nearly unchanged during etching, and only the thickness was reduced. This is in contrast to the insulating behavior found for as-deposited SVO ultrathin films. For the etched films, the electron mobility at 200 K decreased with decreasing film thickness below 10 ML, originating from an increased scattering r…
We studied the temperature dependence of the diagonal double-stripe spin order in one and two unit cell thick layers of FeTe grown on the topological insulator Bi_2Te_3 via spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. The spin order persists up to temperatures which are higher than the transition temperature reported for bulk Fe_1+yTe with lowest possible excess Fe content y. The enhanced spin order stability is assigned to a strongly decreased y with respect to the lowest values achievable in bulk crystal growth, and effects due to the interface between the FeTe and the topological insulator…
Through ${in~situ}$ photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the change in the electronic and crystal structures of dimensionality-controlled VO$_2$ films coherently grown on TiO$_2$(001) substrates. In the nanostructured films, the balance between the instabilities of a bandlike Peierls transition and a Mott transition is controlled as a function of thickness. The characteristic spectral change associated with temperature-driven metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ thick films holds down to 1.5 nm (roughly corresponding to five V atoms along the [001] direction), whereas VO$_2$ films of le…
We investigate the thickness effects on charge and magnetic orderings in Fe perovskite oxide La1/3Sr2/3FeO3/SrTiO3 thin films by hard x-ray and resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) with changing thin film thickness systematically. We found that the correlation lengths of the magnetic ordering along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions are comparable and proportional to the thickness, and shows stronger thickness dependence than those of charge orderg. %the thickness dependence of correlation length of charge ordering is smaller than that of magnetic orderings. The magnetic ordered states …
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
We investigate the evolution of superconductivity with decreasing film thickness in ultrathin amorphous MoGe (a-MoGe) films using a combination of sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling spectroscopy, magnetic penetration depth measurements and magneto-transport measurements. We observe that superconductivity is strongly affected by quantum and classical phase fluctuations for thickness below 5 nm. The superfluid density is strongly suppressed by quantum phase fluctuations at low temperatures and evolves towards a linear-T dependence at higher temperatures. This is associated with a rapid decrease in th…
Metallic oxide SrVO3 represents a prototype system for the study of the mechanism behind thickness-induced metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) or crossover in thin films due to its simple cubic symmetry with one electron in the 3d state in the bulk. Here we report a deviation of chemical composition and distortion of lattice structure existing in the initial 3 unit cells of SrVO3 films grown on SrTiO3 (001) from its bulk form, which shows a direct correlation to the thickness-dependent MIT. In-situ photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy indicate a MIT at the critical thickness of ~3…
We report on the structure, magnetization, magnetic anisotropy, and domain morphology of ultrathin yttrium iron garnet (YIG)/Pt films with thickness ranging from 3 to 90 nm. We find that the saturation magnetization is close to the bulk value in the thickest films and decreases towards low thickness with a strong reduction below 10 nm. We characterize the magnetic anisotropy by measuring the transverse spin Hall magnetoresistance as a function of applied field. Our results reveal strong easy plane anisotropy fields of the order of 50-100 mT, which add to the demagnetizing field, as well as wea…
We report a magnetotransport study of spin relaxation in 1.4-21.2 nm epitaxial SrIrO$_3$ thin films coherently strained on SrTiO$_3$ substrates. Fully charge compensated semimetallic transport has been observed in SrIrO$_3$ films thicker than 1.6 nm, where the charge mobility at 10 K increases from 45 cm$^2$/Vs to 150 cm$^2$/Vs with decreasing film thickness. In the two-dimensional regime, the charge dephasing and spin-orbit scattering lengths extracted from the weak localization/anti-localization effects show power-law dependence on temperature, pointing to the important role of electron-elec…
We develop a two-orbital Hubbard model of electron correlations in ultrathin (111)-oriented fcc films of late transition metals such as Co and Ni. Our model indicates that the Mott-Hund's interaction results in ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor orbital correlations. Frustration associated with the mismatch between orbital and crystal symmetries prevents orbital ordering, resulting in the orbital liquid state. This state can be manifested in phenomena involving spin-orbit coupling, such as magnetic anisotropy.
