This talk summarises the ongoing proposals to upgrade the ATLAS and CMS detectors by the installation of forward silicon detector systems close to the beam line at distances of approximately 220 m and 420 m from the respective Interaction Points. The physics motivation is outlined, with emphasis on detection of Higgs and Supersymmetric states, and some of the aspects of the apparatus and its performance are briefly described.
Tagging two-photon production offers a significant extension of the LHC physics programme. Effective luminosity of high-energy gamma-gamma collisions reaches 1% of the proton-proton luminosity and the standard detector techniques used for measuring very forward proton scattering should allow for a reliable extraction of interesting two-photon interactions. Particularly exciting is a possibility of detecting two-photon exclusive Higgs boson production at the LHC.
The identification of jets resulting from the fragmentation and hadronization of b quarks is an important part of high-pT collider physics. The methods used by the CDF and DO collaborations to perform this identification are described, including the calibration of the efficiencies and fake rates. Some thoughts on the application of these methods in the LHC environment are also presented.
Recent jet and jet substructure measurements at the LHC, and of machine-learning-based tagging techniques are presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. These measurements are crucial for precise tests of electroweak and pQCD calculations and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The measurements are compared with several Monte Carlo event generator predictions which provide valuable input to the tuning of perturbative and non-perturbative models and to constraining model parameters of advanced parton-showe…

The geometric acceptance of the ATLAS forward proton detectors: ALFA and AFP for various LHC optics settings are shown. The probabilities of observing a proton originating from a minimum-bias event in ALFA and AFP stations are given. The main properties of single diffractive and double Pomeron exchange production of dijets, photon+jet, jet-gap-jet and W/Z bosons are discussed. The possibility of measuring the jet production in exclusive (double proton tag) and semi-ex…
The tau identification and reconstruction algorithms developed for the LHC experiments Atlas and CMS are presented. Reconstruction methods suitable for use at High Level Trigger and off-line are described in detail
Inclusive c and b-jet tagging algorithms have been developed to utilize the excellent secondary vertex reconstruction and resolution capabilities of the LHCb detector. The validation and performance of these tagging algorithms are reported using the full run 1 LHCb dataset at 7 and 8 TeV. Jet-tagging has been applied to muon+jet final states to measure both the W+c,b-jet charge asymmetries and the ratios of W+c,b-jet to W+jet and W+jet to Z+jet production. The forward top production cross-section is also measured using the muon+b-jet final. All results are found to be consistent with standard …
Calibration of the light-flavour jet mistagging efficiency of the $b$-tagging algorithms with $Z$+jets events using 139 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of ATLAS proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV
A process of Central Exclusive $π^+π^-$ production in proton-proton collisions and its theoretical description is presented. A possibility of its measurement, during the special low luminosity LHC runs, with the help of the ATLAS central detector for measuring pions and the ALFA stations for tagging the scattered protons is studied. A visible cross section is estimated to be 21 $μ$b for $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, which gives over 2000 events for 100 $μ$b$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Differential distributions in pion pseudorapidities, pion and proton transverse momenta as well as $π^+π^-$ invariant…
Photon interactions at the LHC result in striking final states with much lower hadronic activity in the central detectors than for pp interactions. In addition, the elastic exchange of a photon leads to a proton scattered at almost zero-degree angle. Tagging photon interactions relies on either the use of large rapidity gaps or on the detection of the scattered proton using very forward detectors. The studies related to such detectors are presented, including their characterization, their acceptance and reconstruction performance. Limitations due to the LHC beamline misalignment and possible s…
The performance of taggers for hadronically decaying top quarks and $W$ bosons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. A set of techniques based on jet shape observables are studied to determine a set of optimal cut-based taggers for use in physics analyses. The studies are extended to assess the utility of combinations of substructure observables as a multivariate tagger using boosted decision trees or deep neural networks in comparison with taggers based on two-variable combinations. In addition, for highly boosted…
Analytical formulas for the cross section of the reaction $pp \to p + \ell^+ \ell^- + X$ are presented. Fiducial cross sections are compared with those measured recently by the ATLAS collaboration.
After the recent discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs-like particle at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), it is crucial to examine its role in unitarizing high energy W_LW_L scattering, which may reveal its possible deviation from a Standard Model Higgs. We perform an updated study on WW scattering in the semileptonic channel at the LHC, improved by the recently developed W jet tagging method. The resultant statistical significance of a Strongly-Interacting Light Higgs (SILH) model is about 20% larger than that based on the conventionally "gold-plated" dileptonic channel, while 200% more signal events a…
The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) element $V_{ts}$, representing the coupling between the top and strange quarks, is currently best determined through fits based on the unitarity of the CKM matrix, and measured indirectly through box-diagram oscillations, and loop-mediated rare decays of the $B$ or $K$ mesons. It has been previously proposed to use the tree level decay of the $t$ quark to the $s$ quark to determine $|V_{ts}|$ at the LHC, which has become a top factory. In this paper, we extend the proposal by performing a detailed analysis of measuring $t \to sW$ in dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ eve…
The identification of jets originating from b quarks is crucial both for the searches for new physics and for the measurement of standard model processes. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has developed a variety of algorithms to select b-quark jets based on variables such as the impact parameter of charged particle tracks, properties of reconstructed secondary vertices from heavy hadron decays, and the presence or absence of a lepton in the jet, or combinations thereof. Performance measurements of these b-jet identification algorithms are present…
Two-photon events at the LHC are characterized by the protons scattered at very small angles and the particles centrally produced via the photon-photon fusion. To select these events from the huge samples of generic pp interactions a detection of the scattered protons, or tagging two-photon interactions is necessary. It requires installation of the high-resolution position-sensitive detectors close to the proton beam and far from the interaction point. Efficient measurement of the forward-scattered protons will open a new field of studying high-energy photon-photon interactions at remarkable l…
We investigate the production of fermionic dark matter $χ$ via $pp \to pγp \to p j χ\barχX$ mediated by a leptophobic spin-1 particle, where one of the protons remains intact and is tagged by forward proton detectors. We find that the masses of $χ$ and the mediator $Z'$ are severely constrained when $Z'$ interacts with $χ$ and quarks through the vector couplings. We show that dark matter searches in this production channel are sensitive to a mediator mass $m_{Z'} \lesssim 1.4~\mathrm{TeV}$ at 14 TeV at the LHC with an integrated luminosity $L_{\rm{int}} = 3000~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The lower mass bou…
The CMS experiment makes use of a large variety of algorithms to identify the origin of particle jets measured in the detector. Through the study of jet substructure properties, jets originating from quarks, gluons, W/Z/Higgs bosons, top quarks and pileup interactions are identified and categorized. We present new techniques based on machine learning approaches developed for the analysis of the data collected during the LHC Run 2 that significantly surpass the performances of classical taggers.
The completion of Run 1 of the CERN Large Hadron Collider has seen the discovery of the Higgs boson and an unprecedented number of precise measurements of the Standard Model, while Run 2 operation has just started to provide first data at higher energy. Upgrades of the LHC to high luminosity (HL-LHC) and the experiments (ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb) will exploit the full potential of the collider to discover and explore new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, the experimental challenges and the physics opportunities in proton-proton collisions at the HL-LHC are reviewed.
Exclusive dilepton production occurs with high cross section in gamma-mediated processes at the LHC. The pure QED process $γγ\rightarrow\ell^+\ell^-$ provides the conditions to study particle production with masses at the electroweak scale. By tagging the leading proton from the hard interaction, the Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) provides an increased sensitivity to selecting exclusive processes. PPS is a detector system to add tracking and timing information at approximately 210~m from the interaction point around the CMS detector. It is designed to operate at high luminosity with up to…
Background: Deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) on the deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging represents a unique method for extracting the free neutron structure functions and exploring the nuclear modifications of bound protons and neutrons. The detection of the spectator (with typical momenta $\lesssim$ 100 MeV/c in the deuteron rest frame) controls the nuclear configuration during the DIS process and enables a differential analysis of nuclear effects. At the future electron-ion collider (EIC) such measurements will be performed using far-forward detectors. Purpose: Simulate deuteron DIS with …
An overview of analyses using data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and 8 TeV of proton-proton collisions at the LHC is presented. These analyses use boosted techniques to search for new phenomena involving top quarks and to measure the production of top quarks at high transverse momenta. Such techniques involve top-quark tagging algorithms, boson-tagging algorithms, and strategies for b-tagging and lepton identification in the environment where the top quark decay products are close to each other. The strategies are optimized for the different final states and for different ranges of the transverse momenta…
We present a result of a search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse energy and b-tagged jets. This search is performed with data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp-collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Data-driven techniques used to measure the Standard Model background are demonstrated. The result is interpreted in terms of the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and compared to a similar search without any b-tag requirement.
The current large uncertainty on the extrapolation of the proton-proton total cross section at the LHC energy will be resolved by the precise measurement by the TOTEM experiment. Its accurate studies on the basic properties of proton-proton collisions at the maximum accelerator energy could provide a significant contribution to the understanding of cosmic ray physics.
Open heavy flavour and J/psi production are powerful tools to test pQCD calculations in proton-proton collisions in the new LHC energy regime. In addition, they provide the necessary reference for the ALICE heavy-ion program. The ALICE experiment at the LHC collected proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 and 2.76 TeV in 2010 and 2011. We report here the latest results of open heavy flavour and J/psi production at both mid- and forward-rapidity via their various hadronic and leptonic decay channels. These include, among other topics, the first LHC result on J/psi polarization, multiplicity de…
Searches for high-mass resonances decaying to pairs of standard model bosons using ATLAS and CMS detectors are presented. The searches use 15 - 36 $\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at the centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Many different final states have been considered and the results are interpreted in a range of theories beyond the standard model of particle physics, most common being heavy vector triplet and warped extra dimensions.
Being able to distinguish light-quark jets from gluon jets on an event-by-event basis could significantly enhance the reach for many new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider. Through an exhaustive search of existing and novel jet substructure observables, we find that a multivariate approach can filter out over 95% of the gluon jets while keeping more than half of the light-quark jets. Moreover, a combination of two simple variables, the charge track multiplicity and the $p_T$-weighted linear radial moment (girth), can achieve similar results. While this pair appears very promising, o…
The TOTEM experiment at the LHC has measured proton-proton elastic scattering in dedicated runs at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV centre-of-mass LHC energies. The proton-proton total cross-section $σ_{\rm tot}$ has been derived for both energies using a luminosity independent method. TOTEM has excluded a purely exponential differential cross-section for elastic proton-proton scattering with significance greater than 7$σ$ in the $|t|$ range from 0.027 to 0.2 GeV$^{2}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV.
We introduce a method to discover the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through its decay to W^+W^-, where one boson decays to leptons, and the other decays to c+jet. This mechanism is complementary to the decay into dileptons, but has the potential to measure the invariant mass peak of the Higgs boson, and to avoid large recently discovered QCD backgrounds from heavy flavor decays. In addition, this mechanism motivates the study and creation of a dedicated charm jet tagger at LHC experiments. Existing charm jet tagging, in the form of fakes to bottom jet tagging, provides sensiti…
A search for new heavy particles manifested as resonances in two-jet final states is presented. The data were produced in root(s) = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 315 nb^-1 collected by the ATLAS detector. No resonances were observed. Upper limits were set on the product of cross section and signal acceptance for excited-quark (q*) production as a function of q* mass. These exclude at the 95% CL the q* mass interval 0.30 < m(q*) < 1.26 TeV, extending the reach of previous experiments.
Proton-proton collisions at the LHC can be classified as elastic, non-diffractive, and diffractive. In this paper we discuss various measurements of these above processes at various LHC experiments. We report about the total proton-proton cross-section measurements, about the analysis of diffractive events and also about the pseudorapidity distribution in inelastic events.
We address the question of understanding the production of $J/ψ$ particles regarding the global underlying event in proton-proton collisions. To do so, we propose to look at a new observable: the $J/ψ$ production as a function of the charged particles multiplicity of the event. We demonstrate the interest for an experimental measurement by varying the model of multiple interactions in the PYTHIA generator.

Multivariate techniques based on engineered features have found wide adoption in the identification of jets resulting from hadronic top decays at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Recent Deep Learning developments in this area include the treatment of the calorimeter activation as an image or supplying a list of jet constituent momenta to a fully connected network. This latter approach lends itself well to the use of Recurrent Neural Networks. In this work the applicability of architectures incorporating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks is explored. Several network architectures, methods …
A search is presented for particles that decay producing a large jet multiplicity and invisible particles. The event selection applies a veto on the presence of isolated electrons or muons and additional requirements on the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets. Having explored the full ATLAS 2015-2016 dataset of LHC proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13~\mathrm{TeV}$, which corresponds to 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, no evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models ins…
The LHCf experiment has been designed to precisely measure very forward neutral particle spectra produced in proton-proton collisions at LHC up to an energy of 14 TeV in the center of mass system. These measurements are of fundamental importance to calibrate the Monte Carlo models widely used in the high energy cosmic ray (HECR) field, up to an equivalent laboratory energy of the order of 1017 eV. In 2009-2010 the experiment has completed the p-p data taking at sqrt{s} = 0.9 TeV and sqrt{s}=7 TeV and the detectors have later on been removed from the tunnel region, when the LHC luminosity incre…
The relative rates of single- and double- diffractive processes were measured with the ALICE detector by studying properties of gaps in the pseudorapidity distribution of particles produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 TeV, 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV. ALICE triggering efficiencies are determined for various classes of events, using a detector simulation validated with data on inclusive particle production. Cross-sections are determined using van der Meer scans to measure beam properties and obtain a measurement of the luminosity.
Identifying the flavour of neutral $B$ mesons production is one of the most important components needed in the study of time-dependent $CP$ violation. The harsh environment of the Large Hadron Collider makes it particularly hard to succeed in this task. We present an inclusive flavour-tagging algorithm as an upgrade of the algorithms currently used by the LHCb experiment. Specifically, a probabilistic model which efficiently combines information from reconstructed vertices and tracks using machine learning is proposed. The algorithm does not use information about underlying physics process. It…
