The CMS experiment makes use of a large variety of algorithms to identify the origin of particle jets measured in the detector. Through the study of jet substructure properties, jets originating from quarks, gluons, W/Z/Higgs bosons, top quarks and pileup interactions are identified and categorized. We present new techniques based on machine learning approaches developed for the analysis of the data collected during the LHC Run 2 that significantly surpass the performances of classical taggers.
The tau identification and reconstruction algorithms developed for the LHC experiments Atlas and CMS are presented. Reconstruction methods suitable for use at High Level Trigger and off-line are described in detail
We present a result of a search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse energy and b-tagged jets. This search is performed with data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp-collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Data-driven techniques used to measure the Standard Model background are demonstrated. The result is interpreted in terms of the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and compared to a similar search without any b-tag requirement.
The identification of jets originating from b quarks is crucial both for the searches for new physics and for the measurement of standard model processes. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has developed a variety of algorithms to select b-quark jets based on variables such as the impact parameter of charged particle tracks, properties of reconstructed secondary vertices from heavy hadron decays, and the presence or absence of a lepton in the jet, or combinations thereof. Performance measurements of these b-jet identification algorithms are present…
Identification of jets originating from b quarks (b-tagging) is a key element of many physics analyses at the LHC. Various algorithms for b-tagging have been developed by the CMS experiment to identify b-tagged jets with a typical efficiency between 40% and 70% while keeping the rate of misidentified light quark jets between 0.1% and 10%. An important step, in order to be able to use these tools in physics analysis, is the determination of the efficiency for tagging b-jets. Several methods to measure the efficiencies of the lifetime based b-tagging algorithms are presented. Events that have je…

The improvements of the algorithms used in 2015 and 2016 data analyses with respect to previous data taking periods are discussed, as well as the ongoing developments in view of the next years of data taking. The measurements of the performance of the algorithms o…
The identification of b jets is a crucial issue to study and characterize various channels like top quark events and many new physics scenarios. Different b-tagging techniques are defined in CMS which benefit from the long life time, high mass and large momentum fraction of the b-hadron produced in b-quark jet. Effcient algorithms have been developed based on the measure of b-hadron secondary vertex or on tracks with a large impact parameter. Data collected in pp collisions at 7TeV in 2011 are used to estimate both the b-tagging effciency and the mistag rate from light flavor jets.
Recent jet and jet substructure measurements at the LHC, and of machine-learning-based tagging techniques are presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. These measurements are crucial for precise tests of electroweak and pQCD calculations and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The measurements are compared with several Monte Carlo event generator predictions which provide valuable input to the tuning of perturbative and non-perturbative models and to constraining model parameters of advanced parton-showe…

The performance of these algorithms has been measured using data from proton-proton collisions at the LHC and compared with expectations based on simulation. The…
We present the current status and Monte Carlo study based performance estimates of b-jet tagging using ALICE, as obtained using both impact parameter as well as secondary vertex methods. We also address the prospects of the identification of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays to obtain b-jet enhanced jet samples.
Jet-flavour identification algorithms are of paramount importance to maximise the physics potential of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Out of the extensive FCC-ee physics program, flavour tagging is crucial for the Higgs physics program, given the dominance of hadronic decays of the Higgs boson. Highly efficient discrimination of $b$-, $c$-, $s$-, and gluon jets allows access to novel decay modes that cannot be identified at the LHC, adding quantitatively new dimensions to the Higgs physics programme. This contribution presents new jet flavour identification algorithms based on advanced ma…
We present measurements of multi-jet event properties, performed using proton-proton collisions data recorded by the CMS experiment. The jet charge and jet mass distributions are considered in addition to a measurement of the azimuthal angular correlations in 2- and 3-jet events. The measurements are compared to predictions including higher orders matched to parton shower and hadronization, together with predictions from semi-analytical calculations beyond next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.
The jet reconstruction and jet energy calibration strategies adopted by the CMS and ATLAS experiments are presented. Jet measurements that can be done with early data to confront QCD at the highest transverse momentum scale and search for new physics are described.
We present angular correlations in multi-jet events at highest center-of-mass energies and compare the measurements to theoretical predictions including higher order parton radiation and coherence effects.
The performance of jet finding using only charged tracks in CMS has been investigated. Different jet algorithms have been applied to QCD di-jet events, to hadronic tt multi-jet events and on Z+jets events. Results using jets made with tracks only or calorimeter towers are compared for energy response, angular resolution and jet matching to the leading partons. The jet reconstruction performance in the presence of pile-up interactions is presented for the Z+jets sample.

Current jet performance is described, followed by inclusive jet and multi-jet measurements in various final state configurations. Finally some results on heavy flavour and jet substructure are presented.
We present preliminary results for the search for the top quark in D-Zero in the electron + jets channel where one of the b quark jets is tagged by means of a soft muon, using 13.5 pb-1 of data. Standard model decay modes for the top quark are assumed. We present the resulting top cross section and error as a function of top mass using this channel combined with the dilepton channel and the untagged lepton + jets channel . At present, no significant signal for top quark production can be established.
We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section using events with one charged lepton and jets from ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. A b-tagging algorithm based on the probability of displaced tracks coming from the event interaction vertex is applied to identify b quarks from top decay. Using 318 pb^{-1} of data collected with the CDF II detector, we measure the ttbar production cross section in events with at least one restrictive (tight) b-tagged jet and obtain 8.9 +1.0-1.0 (stat.) +1.1-1.0 (syst.) pb. The cross section value assumes a top quark mass of…
The results of searches for Supersymmetry in events with two same-sign isolated leptons, hadronic jets, and missing transverse energy in the final state are presented. The searches use pp collisions at 7 TeV collected in 2011 by the CMS experiment.
Many physics analyses at the LHC are looking into processes where the signal jets are originating from quarks, while jets in the background are more gluon enriched. Based on observables sensitive to fundamental differences in the fragmentation properties of gluons and quarks, a likelihood discriminant is constructed to distinguish between jets originating from quarks and gluons. The performance of the tagger is evaluated using Z+jets and dijet events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC.
The most recent results of Standard Model physics using 8 and 13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS detector during the LHC Runs I and II are reviewed. This overview includes studies of several results of vector boson production in association with jets. The outlined results are compared to the corresponding theoretical predictions and no significant deviation is observed.
Preliminary results on a variety of jet analyses are presented using pp collision data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV. The data distributions are compared with the predictions of Monte Carlo event generators and with perturbative QCD calculations.
We present a measurement of the ttbar production cross section using events with one charged lepton and jets from ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. In these events, heavy flavor quarks from top quark decay are identified with a secondary vertex tagging algorithm. From 162 pb-1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, a total of 48 candidate events are selected, where 13.5 +- 1.8 events are expected from background contributions. We measure a ttbar production cross section of 5.6^{+1.2}_{-1.1} (stat.) ^{+0.9}_{0.6} (syst.) pb.
The capabilities of the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb detectors to reconstruct jets at forward rapidities (|η|> 3) in p-p collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are reviewed. We present a study of jet production in association with W and Z bosons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the full 2010 data set collected by CMS corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (35.9 +/- 1.4) inverse picobarn. We report the measurement of ratios s(V + >= n jets)/s(V) and s(V + >= n jets)/s(V + >= (n - 1) jets), where V represents either a W or a Z, s stands for the cross section and n stands for the number of jets.
We report on the status and history of the CMS commissioning, together with selected results from cosmic-ray muon data. The second part focuses on strategies for optimizing the reconstruction of jets, missing transverse energy and photons for early standard model measurements at ATLAS and CMS with the first collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
We present measurements of the forward (3 < |eta| < 5) energy flow in minimum bias events and in events with either hard jets or W and Z bosons produced at central rapidities together with first measurements of the inclusive forward jet cross section and central forward jet correlations. Results are compared to MC models with different parameter tunes for the description of the underlying event.
Recent results from CMS are reviewed for searches for supersymmetry in final states with multiple bottom quark jets. Results are based on the full 2012 CMS dataset consisting of 19.5 fb-1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. In particular, searches for final states with multiple b-jets and one or two leptons are presented. These final states are of special interest in the context of the search for third generation squarks in gluino or sbottom cascade decays, as predicted by natural supersymmetry.
We present measurements of the inclusive jet production at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, and of multijets at 8 TeV. These measurements allow to constrain PDFs and the strong coupling constant. Two measurements of the azimuthal correlations at 8 and 13 TeV are also presented, testing higher order QCD calculations.
The study of the associated production of vector bosons and jets constitutes an excellent environment to check numerous QCD predictions. Total and differential cross sections of vector bosons produced in association with jets have been studied in pp collisions using CMS data. Differential distributions as a function of a broad range of kinematical observables are measured and compared with theoretical predictions. In this talk, studies of associated production of vector bosons with inclusive jets and with jets originating from heavy-flavour quarks will be summarized.
We present a measurement of the t anti-t production cross section in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96 TeV which uses events with an inclusive signature of significant missing transverse energy and jets. This is the first measurement which makes no explicit lepton identification requirements, so that sensitivity to W --> tau nu decays is maintained. Heavy flavor jets from top quark decay are identified with a secondary vertex tagging algorithm. From 311 pb-1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab we measure a production cross section of 5.8 +/- 1.2(stat.)+0.9_-0.7(syst.) p…
The large ttbar production cross-section at the LHC suggests the use of top quark decays to calibrate several critical parts of the detectors, such as the trigger system, the jet energy scale and b-tagging.
We present a measurement of the $\ttbar$ production cross section in $\ppbar$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV using events containing a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. Events consistent with $\ttbar$ decay are found by identifying jets containing candidate heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The measurement uses a CDF Run II data sample corresponding to $2 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity. Based on 248 candidate events with three or more jets and an expected background of $79.5\pm5.3$ events, we measure a producti…
The identification of jets containing $b$ hadrons is important for the physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Several algorithms to identify jets containing $b$ hadrons are described, ranging from those based on the reconstruction of an inclusive secondary vertex or the presence of tracks with large impact parameters to combined tagging algorithms making use of multi-variate discriminants. An independent $b$-tagging algorithm based on the reconstruction of muons inside jets as well as the $b$-tagging algorithm used in the online trigger are also presented. The $…
Measurements of jet energy scale (JES) and resolution (JER) are presented, based on the legacy reconstruction of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment during the LHC Run 2 period from 2016-2018. Precision measurement of JES is of the utmost importance for the vast majority of physics measurements and searches at CMS. The high pileup, a harsh radiation environment, and time-dependent variations in detector response and calibration, all make precision JES measurement a challenging task. We present in-situ derivations of JES and JER based on CMS Run 2 data, as well a…
Inclusive c and b-jet tagging algorithms have been developed to utilize the excellent secondary vertex reconstruction and resolution capabilities of the LHCb detector. The validation and performance of these tagging algorithms are reported using the full run 1 LHCb dataset at 7 and 8 TeV. Jet-tagging has been applied to muon+jet final states to measure both the W+c,b-jet charge asymmetries and the ratios of W+c,b-jet to W+jet and W+jet to Z+jet production. The forward top production cross-section is also measured using the muon+b-jet final. All results are found to be consistent with standard …
The normalised differential top quark-antiquark production cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity. Using a procedure to associate jets to decay products of the top quarks, the differential cross section of the ttbar production is determined as a function of the additional jet multiplicity. The fraction of events with no additional jets is measured as a function of the threshold required for the transverse momentum of the additional jet. The measurements are compared with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics and no significant deviations are observed.
A search is presented for particles that decay producing a large jet multiplicity and invisible particles. The event selection applies a veto on the presence of isolated electrons or muons and additional requirements on the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets. Having explored the full ATLAS 2015-2016 dataset of LHC proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13~\mathrm{TeV}$, which corresponds to 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, no evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models ins…
Calibration of the light-flavour jet mistagging efficiency of the $b$-tagging algorithms with $Z$+jets events using 139 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of ATLAS proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV
We present a new technique for tagging heavy-flavor jets with p_T > 500 GeV called "mu_x tagging." Current track-based methods of b-jet tagging lose efficiency and experience a large rise in fake rate in the boosted regime. Using muons from B hadron decay, we combine angular information and jet substructure to tag b jets, c jets, light jets, and "light-heavy" jets (those containing B hadrons from gluon splitting). We find tagging efficiencies of epsilon_b = 14%, epsilon_c = 6.5%, epsilon_{light-light} = 0.14%, and epsilon_{light-heavy} = 0.5%, respectively, that are nearly independent of trans…
This talk summarises the ongoing proposals to upgrade the ATLAS and CMS detectors by the installation of forward silicon detector systems close to the beam line at distances of approximately 220 m and 420 m from the respective Interaction Points. The physics motivation is outlined, with emphasis on detection of Higgs and Supersymmetric states, and some of the aspects of the apparatus and its performance are briefly described.
The performance of reconstruction and calibration of jets and missing transverse momentum in the CMS Collaboration, together with the latest tools for pileup mitigation, is presented. The results shown are relative to the data collected from 2016 to 2018 (Run 2) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. An outlook to the new techniques foreseen for Run 3 is discussed.
Forward (di)jet measurements are a useful tool to constrain the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) at low values of parton momentum fraction x, and to study the possible onset of BFKL or gluon saturation QCD evolutions in the proton. We present studies of jet reconstruction capabilities in the CMS Hadron Forward (HF) calorimeter (3<|eta|<5). The expected sensitivity of the inclusive forward jet p_T spectrum to the proton PDF, as well as the azimuthal decorrelation of Mueller-Navelet jets with a large rapidity separation are presented for p-p collisions at sqrt{s} = 14 TeV.
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) production cross section ($σ_{t\bar{t}}$) in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV using 230 pb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the $t\bar{t}$ purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure $σ_{t\bar{t}}=8.6^{+1.6}_{-1.5}(stat.+syst.)\pm 0.6(lumi.)$ pb, in agreem…

Data from LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity, have been collected with the CMS detector. Jets are reconstructed up to rapidity 2.5, transverse momentum 2 TeV, and dijet invariant mass 5 TeV, using the anti-kt clustering algorithm with distance parameter R = 0.7. The measured cross sections are corrected for detector effects and compared to perturbative QCD predictions at next-to-leading order, using five sets of parton distribution func…
