The TOTEM experiment at the LHC has measured proton-proton elastic scattering in dedicated runs at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV centre-of-mass LHC energies. The proton-proton total cross-section $σ_{\rm tot}$ has been derived for both energies using a luminosity independent method. TOTEM has excluded a purely exponential differential cross-section for elastic proton-proton scattering with significance greater than 7$σ$ in the $|t|$ range from 0.027 to 0.2 GeV$^{2}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV.
TOTEM is an LHC experiment dedicated to forward hadronic physics. In this contribution, two main parts of its physics programme - proton-proton elastic scattering and total cross-section - are discussed. The analysis procedures are outlined and their status is reviewed.
The TOTEM experiment at the LHC is dedicated to the measurement of the total pp cross section and to the study of elastic scattering and of diffractive dissociation processes. TOTEM is here presented with a general overview on the main features of its experimental apparatus and of its physics programme.
We study high energy $\small{\rm{pp}}$ and $\small{\rm{\bar {p}p}}$ elastic scattering in the TeV region based on an effective field theory model of the proton. We phenomenologically investigate the main processes underlying elastic scattering and quantitatively describe the measured elastic d$\smallσ$/dt at energies 7.0 TeV (LHC $\small{\rm{pp}}$), 1.96 TeV (Tevatron $\small{\rm{\bar {p}p}}$), and 0.630 TeV (SPS $\small{\rm{\bar {p}p}}$). Finally, we give our prediction for $\small{\rm{pp}}$ elastic d$\smallσ$/dt at 14 TeV that will be measured by the TOTEM Collaboration.
The TOTEM experiment at the CERN LHC is here presented. After an overview of the experimental apparatus, the measurement of the total pp cross section, elastic scattering and diffractive phenomena is described. This physics programme will allow to distinguish among different models of soft proton interactions
Recently published and preliminary results of the TOTEM experiment are presented, emphasizing a recent discovery of a non-exponential behaviour of the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering, that TOTEM measured with an unprecedented precision at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV based on a high-statistics data sample obtained with the $β_* = 90$ m optics of CERN LHC. Both the statistical and systematic uncertainties remained below 1%, except for the t-independent contribution from the overall normalisation. This measurement allowed TOTEM to exclude a purely e…
This article discusses the physics programme of the TOTEM experiment at the LHC. A new special beam optics with beta* = 90 m, enabling the measurements of the total cross-section, elastic pp scattering and diffractive phenomena already at early LHC runs, is explained. For this and the various other TOTEM running scenarios, the acceptances of the leading proton detectors and of the forward tracking stations for some physics processes are described.
We describe the most recent results from the TOTEM collaboration on elastic, inelastic and total cross sections as well as the odderon discovery by the D0 and TOTEM collaborations.
We discuss the profile of the impact--parameter dependent elastic scattering amplitude. Extraction of impact-parameter dependence from the dataset with inclusion of the experimental data on elastic scattering at the LHC energies helps to reveal the asymptotics of hadron interactions. Analysis of the data clearly indicates that the impact-parameter elastic scattering amplitude exceed the black disk limit at the LHC energy 7TeV and the inelastic overlap function reaches its maximum value at $b>0$
The TOTEM experiment has performed several measurements related to its physics program in dedicated (high β*, low L) LHC fills at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. Under various beam and background conditions, the differential elastic (as a function of |t|), elastic, inelastic and total pp cross-sections have been measured. A measurement of the forward charged particle ηdensity has also been performed. A summary of these measurements is here reported, as well as the first results from runs at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV.
We complete the model-independent analysis of the scaling properties of the differential cross section of elastic proton-proton cross sections, including new TOTEM data published in 2022 at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV. We separate the signal and the background region with a new gating method. In the signal region, we find that the statistical significance of Odderon exchange from the combined 7.0 and 8.0 TeV $pp$ data of TOTEM and the 1.96 TeV $p\bar{p}$ data of D0 is at least 7.32$σ$. In the background region, the scaling functions of elastic proton-proton data at 7 and 8 TeV and that of elastic proto…
The TOTEM experiment has made a precise measurement of the elastic proton-proton differential cross-section at the centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 8 TeV based on a high-statistics data sample obtained with the beta* = 90 optics. Both the statistical and systematic uncertainties remain below 1%, except for the t-independent contribution from the overall normalisation. This unprecedented precision allows to exclude a purely exponential differential cross-section in the range of four-momentum transfer squared 0.027 < |t| < 0.2 GeV^2 with a significance greater than 7 sigma. Two extended parametri…
An unified systematic of elastic (anti)proton-proton scattering data is proposed based on a simple expression for the process amplitude - f(q)=A[(πdq)/sh(πdq)][i J_1(Rq)/(Rq)+ρJ_0(Rq)]. The parameters R and d are obtained at a fitting of (anti)proton-proton experimental data on differential cross sections from Plab=1 GeV/c up to ISR energies. The fitting gives extra-ordinary good results, χ^2/NoF ~ 1 of below at |t|< 1.75 (GeV/c)^2. An extrapolation of the parameter's energy dependencies to the LHC energies allows excellent description of the Totem data up to the second diffraction maximum. Pr…
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at $\sqrt{s} = 7 $ TeV in special runs with the Roman Pot detectors placed as close to the outgoing beam as seven times the transverse beam size. The differential cross-section measurements are reported in the |t|-range of 0.36 to 2.5 GeV^2. Extending the range of data to low t values from 0.02 to 0.33 GeV^2,and utilizing the luminosity measurements of CMS, the total proton-proton cross section at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is measured to be (98.3 +- 0.2(stat) +- 2.8(syst)) mb.
Recent results are summarized from the TOTEM experiment at CERN LHC, including measurements of the total, elastic and inelastic cross-sections, the nuclear slope parameter $B$, the differential cross-section of elastic scattering and the real to imaginary part ration $ρ$ at $\sqrt{s} = $ 2.76 and 13 TeV. The implications of these data for Odderon (odd-gluon colorless) exchange are discussed.
The TOTEM experiment with its detectors in the forward region of CMS and the Roman Pots along the beam line will determine the total pp cross-section via the optical theorem by measuring both the elastic cross-section and the total inelastic rate. TOTEM will have dedicated runs with special high-beta* beam optics and a reduced number of proton bunches resulting in a low effective luminosity between 1.6 x 10^{28} cm^{-2} s^{-1} and 2.4 x 10^{29} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. In these special conditions also an absolute luminosity measurement will be made, allowing the calibration of the CMS luminosity monito…
The TOTEM collaboration has measured the proton-proton total cross section at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with a luminosity-independent method. Using dedicated $β^{*}=90$ m beam optics, the Roman Pots were inserted very close to the beam. The inelastic scattering rate has been measured by the T1 and T2 telescopes during the same LHC fill. After applying the optical theorem the total proton-proton cross section is $σ_{\rm tot}=(110.6 \pm 3.4$) mb, well in agreement with the extrapolation from lower energies. This method also allows one to derive the luminosity-independent elastic and inelastic cross sect…
The first physics results from the TOTEM experiment are here reported, concerning the measurements of the total, differential elastic, elastic and inelastic pp cross-section at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV, obtained using the luminosity measurement from CMS. A preliminary measurement of the forward charged particle $η$ distribution is also shown.
The model of elastic scattering amplitudes dominated by the triple (at $t=0$) pomeron pole suggested earlier is modified to confront to existing experimental data on $pp$ and $\bar pp$ total and differential cross sections at $\sqrt{s}\geq 19$ GeV and $|t|\leq 14.2$ GeV$^{2}$ including the newest TOTEM data. Predictions for the future TOTEM measurements at 13 and 14 TeV are given.
With the installation of the T1 telescope and the Roman Pot stations at 147 m from IP5, the detector apparatus of the TOTEM experiment has been completed during the technical stop in winter 2010/2011. After the commissioning of the dedicated beam optics with beta* = 90 m, a first measurement of the total pp cross-section sigma_tot and -- simultaneously -- the luminosity L will be possible in the upcoming running season 2011. The precision envisaged is 3 % and 4 % for sigma_tot and L, respectively. An ultimate beam optics configuration with beta* ~ 1 km will later reduce the uncertainty to the …
We discuss discrimination of the scattering mechanisms on the basis of functional dependencies of the large-$t$ elastic scattering suggested by the recent data from the TOTEM experiment. It is shown that Orear exponent is in a better agreement with the data than the power-like dependence used by the TOTEM. This implies that the collective dynamics is dominating over the point-like mechanism related to the scattering of the proton constituents.
We revisit a discussion on the impact-parameter dependence of proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude with improved uncertainty calculation. This analysis allows to reveal the asymptotic properties of hadron interactions. New data indicates that the impact-parameter elastic scattering amplitude is slightly above the black disk limit at 13~TeV c.m.s. energy of the LHC reaching a value of $\mathrm{Im}\,H(s,0) = 0.512\pm 0.001\ \text{(sys+stat)} \pm 0.004\ \text{(norm)}$ confirming that black disk limit is violated at current collision energy, however it was not exceeded at 7~TeV. The growth t…
The CMS+TOTEM Precision Proton Spectrometer operated for the first time in 2016, collecting data during $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Procedures for the detector alignment, optics corrections, and background estimations were developed, and applied to an analysis of the process $pp \rightarrow p μ^{+}μ^{-} p^{(*)}$ with dimuon masses larger than 110 GeV. A total of 12 candidate events are observed, corresponding to an excess of $>4σ$ over the background prediction. This constitutes the first evidence for this process at such masses, and demonstrates t…
We describe the most recent results from the TOTEM collaboration at the LHC, namely the elastic cross section measurements at a center-of-mass on 2.76, 7, 8 and 13 TeV. No structure or resonance is observed at high $t$ at high center-of-mass energies. A pure exponential form of $d σ/dt$ is excluded both at 8 and 13 TeV. Accessing the very low $t$ region allows measuring the $ρ$ parameter at 13 TeV.
Very precise data on elastic proton-proton scattering at $\sqrt{s}=7$, $8$ and $13$ TeV have been obtained by the TOTEM group at LHC in the near-forward region (momentum transfers down to $|t| = 6 \times 10^{-4}\ {\rm GeV}^2$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and to $|t| = 8 \times 10^{-4}\ {\rm GeV}^2$ at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV). The Coulomb-nuclear interference has been measured with sufficient accuracy for TOTEM to establish the falloff of the $ρ$ parameter with increasing energy. The predictions from a previously studied model are shown to be in good agreement with the data and thus allow us to draw rather f…
This note highlights the predictive power of the 3-component Pomeron model designed by the authors ten years ago with a partial account of the multiplicity of Pomerons in QCD. The model is put to the test by comparing its predictions with the recent data from DO and TOTEM Collaborations at 1.96 and 7 TeV, respectively. We also compare model predictions for inelastic cross section to experimental measurement by TOTEM, CMS, ALICE, and ATLAS collaborations. It is shown that the DO data are perfectly predicted by the model. Total, elastic, and inelastic cross section predictions are in agreement w…
At the LHC, diffractive physics will be explored by the dedicated experiment TOTEM whose Technical Design Report has been approved in Summer 2004. The experimental programme will be carried out partly in TOTEM standalone mode for purely forward phenomena like elastic scattering, and partly in collaboration with CMS for processes requiring a full rapidity coverage. ATLAS and ALICE are interested in diffraction for a later stage. This article presents the TOTEM/CMS running scenario for diffractive physics in the first year of LHC. We discuss which processes are within reach and with which statis…
The TOTEM 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV pp elastic differential cross sections are extrapolated using a data-driven approach to obtain the 1.96 TeV pp elastic cross section. A difference with a 3.4$σ$ significance is observed between the extrapolated pp elastic cross section and the D0 p$\bar{\rm p}$ elastic cross section at 1.96 TeV in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the pp cross section, providing evidence for colourless C-odd gluonic exchanges, also denoted as odderon. These results are combined with a TOTEM analysis of the same $t$-channel C-odd exchanges based on …
The TOTEM collaboration has measured the elastic proton-proton differential cross section ${\rm d}σ/{\rm d}t$ at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV LHC energy using dedicated $β^{*}=90$ m beam optics. The Roman Pot detectors were inserted to 10$σ$ distance from the LHC beam, which allowed the measurement of the range $[0.04$ GeV$^{2}$$; 4 $GeV$^{2}$$]$ in four-momentum transfer squared $|t|$. The efficient data acquisition allowed to collect about 10$^{9}$ elastic events to precisely measure the differential cross-section including the diffractive minimum (dip), the subsequent maximum (bump) and the large-$|t|…
Modern models of high energy elastic hadron-hadron scattering predict an oscillation character of differential cross sections at the LHC energy of 14 TeV and at a sufficiently high momentum transfer. The Totem collaboration did not see the oscillations at 7 TeV. According to some predictions, the oscillations are weak at 7 TeV in the studied 4-momentum transfer range (|t|< 2.5 GeV$^2$). They may be beyond the range of the experiment. But a direct extension of the Totem collaboration data on the pp-scattering at 7 TeV above |t|\sim 2.5 GeV$^2$ contradicts previous measurements. Thus the collabo…
The TOTEM experiment at the LHC measures the total proton-proton cross section with the luminosity-independent method and the elastic proton-proton cross-section over a wide |t|-range. It also performs a comprehensive study of diffraction, spanning from cross-section measurements of individual diffractive processes to the analysis of their event topologies. Hard diffraction will be studied in collaboration with CMS taking advantage of the large common rapidity coverage for charged and neutral particle detection and the large variety of trigger possibilities even at large luminosities. TOTEM wi…
We describe the discovery of the colorless $C$-odd gluonic compound, the odderon, by the D0 and TOTEM Collaborations by comparing elastic differential cross sections measured in $pp$ and $p \bar{p}$ interactions at high energies
Precise knowledge of the beam optics at the LHC is crucial to fulfil the physics goals of the TOTEM experiment, where the kinematics of the scattered protons is reconstructed with the near-beam telescopes -- so-called Roman Pots (RP). Before being detected, the protons' trajectories are influenced by the magnetic fields of the accelerator lattice. Thus precise understanding of the proton transport is of key importance for the experiment. A novel method of optics evaluation is proposed which exploits kinematical distributions of elastically scattered protons observed in the RPs. Theoretical pre…
Recent data from LHC13 by the TOTEM Collaboration have indicated an unexpected decrease in the value of the $ρ$ parameter and a $σ_{tot}$ value in agreement with the trend of previous measurements at 7 and 8 TeV. These data at 13 TeV are not simultaneously described by the predictions from Pomeron models selected by the COMPETE Collaboration, but show agreement with the maximal Odderon dominance, as recently demonstrated by Martynov and Nicolescu. Here we present a detailed analysis on the applicability of Pomeron dominance by means of a general class of forward scattering amplitude, consistin…
The TOTEM Experiment is designed to measure the total proton-proton cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and to study elastic and diffractive pp scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5, two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, are installed on each side of the IP in the pseudorapidity region 3.1 < = |eta | < = 6.5, and special movable beam-pipe insertions - called Roman Pots (RP) - are placed at distances of +- 147 m and +- 220 m from IP5. This article describes in detail the working o…
The soft diffraction phenomena in the elastic proton-proton scattering are reviewed from the viewpoint of experiments at the LHC (TOTEM and ATLAS collaboration). In the framework of the High Energy Generalized Structure (HEGS) model the form of the diffraction minimum in the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering in a wide energy region is analyzed. The energy dependences of the main characteristics of the diffraction dip are obtained. The numerical predictions at LHC energies are presented. The comparison of the model predictions with the new LHC data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is made.
In this talk we present a selection of forward physics results recently obtained with the run-1 and run-2 LHC data by the CMS, LHCf and TOTEM experiments. The status of the very forward LHC proton spectrometer, CT-PPS, is discussed: emphasis is given to the physics potential of CT-PPS and to the analyses that are currently ongoing with the data collected in 2016. Very recent forward measurements obtained with the LHCf and the CMS-CASTOR calorimeter are then addressed. In particular, CMS measured the inclusive energy spectrum in the very forward direction for proton-proton collisions at a cente…
The TOTEM experiment at the LHC has performed the first measurement at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV of the $ρ$ parameter, the real to imaginary ratio of the nuclear elastic scattering amplitude at $t=0$, obtaining the following results: $ρ= 0.09 \pm 0.01$ and $ρ= 0.10 \pm 0.01$, depending on different physics assumptions and mathematical modelling. The unprecedented precision of the $ρ$ measurement, combined with the TOTEM total cross-section measurements in an energy range larger than 10 TeV (from 2.76 to 13 TeV), has implied the exclusion of all the models classified and published by COMPETE. The $ρ$…
Elastic proton-proton scattering is reviewed starting from the results of the LHC experiments conducted by the TOTEM and ATLAS collaborations, and the HEGS model and a simple phenomenological parametrisation are compared with the new data on the differential elastic proton-proton scattering cross section, which detect a non-exponential behaviour of the differential cross sections in the first diffraction cone. We consider the influence of various assumptions on the extraction of the elastic scattering parameters, and on the deduction of the total cross section.
Taking into account the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, calculated from a new set of $t $-dependent GPDs, a new model is built. The real part of the hadronic amplitude is determined only through complex $s$. In the framework of this model the quantitative description of all existing experimental data at $52.8 \leq \sqrt{s} \leq 1960 \ $GeV, including the Coulomb range and large momentum transfers ($0.0008 \leq |t| \leq 9.75 \ $GeV$^2$), is obtained with only $3$ fitting high energy parameters. The comparison with the preliminary data of the TOTEM Collaboration at an energy of $…
We discuss how the main features of the recent LHC data on elastic scattering can be described by a QCD-inspired formalism with a dynamical infrared mass scale. For this purpose new developments on a dynamical gluon mass approach are reported, with emphasis on a method to estimate uncertainty bounds in the predictions for the high-energy scattering observables. We investigate the effects due to the correlations among the fixed and free parameters involved and show that the band of predictions are consistent with the recent data from the TOTEM experiment, including the forward quantities and th…
We analyze the problem of correlating pp interaction data from the central detectors with a subevent measured in an independent system of leading proton detectors using FP420 as an example. FP420 is an R&D project conducted by a collaboration formed by members of ATLAS and CMS to investigate the possibility of detecting new physics in the central exclusive channel, PP -> P + X + P,where the central system X may be a single particle, for example a Standard Model Higgs boson. With standard LHC optics, the protons emerge from the beam at a distance of 420m from the Interaction Point, for M_X ~ 12…
An analysis of the data on forward $pp, \bar pp, π^{\pm}p$ and $K^{\pm}p$ scattering is performed making use of the single- and double-subtraction integral and comparing with derivative dispersion relations for amplitudes. Various pomeron and odderon models for the total cross sections are considered and compared. The real part of the amplitude is calculated via dispersion relations. It is shown that the integral dispersion relations lead to a better description of the data for $\sqrt{s}>$5 GeV. Predictions of the considered models for the TOTEM experiment at LHC energies are given
The critical analysis of the new experimental data obtained by the ATLAS Collaboration group at 13 TeV is presented and the problem of the tension between data of the ATLAS and TOTEM Collaboration is considered. The analysis of new effects discovered on the basis of experimental data at 13 TeV \cite{osc13,fd13} and associated with the specific properties of the hadron potential at large distances is carried out taking account of all sets of experimental data on elastic $pp$-scattering obtained by the TOTEM and ATLAS Collaborations in a wide momentum transfer region. It also gives quantitative …
The analysis of the new TOTEM data at 13 TeV in a wide momentum transfer region reveals the unusual phenomenon - the presence in the elastic scattering amplitude of a term with a very large slope that is responsible for the behaviour of hadron scattering at a very small momentum transfer. This term can be connected with hadron interactions at large distances.
Elastic scattering amplitudes dominated by the Pomeron singularity which obey the principal unitarity bounds at high energies are constructed and analyzed. Confronting the models of double and triple (at $t=0$) Pomeron pole (supplemented by some terms responsible for the low energy behaviour) with existing experimental data on $pp$ and $\bar pp$ total and differential cross sections at $\sqrt{s}\geq 5$ GeV and $|t|\leq 6$ GeV$^{2}$ we are able to tune the form of the Pomeron singularity. Actually the good agreement with those data is received for both models though the behaviour given by the d…
At the Tevatron, the total p_bar-p cross-section has been measured by CDF at 546 GeV and 1.8 TeV, and by E710/E811 at 1.8 TeV. The two results at 1.8 TeV disagree by 2.6 standard deviations, introducing big uncertainties into extrapolations to higher energies. At the LHC, the TOTEM collaboration is preparing to resolve the ambiguity by measuring the total p-p cross-section with a precision of about 1 %. Like at the Tevatron experiments, the luminosity-independent method based on the Optical Theorem will be used. The Tevatron experiments have also performed a vast range of studies about soft an…
Forward amplitude analyses constitute an important approach in the investigation of the energy dependence of the total hadronic cross-section $σ_{tot}$ and the $ρ$ parameter. The standard picture indicates for $σ_{tot}$ a leading log-squared dependence at the highest c.m. energies, in accordance with the Froissart-Lukaszuk-Martin bound. Beyond this log-squared (L2) leading dependence, other amplitude analyses have considered a log-raised-to-gamma form (L$γ$), with $γ$ as a real free fit parameter. In this case, analytic connections with $ρ$ can be obtained either through dispersion relations (…
Inspired by the recent TOTEM data for the elastic proton -- proton ($pp$) scattering at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 and 13 TeV, we update previous studies of the differential cross sections using the Phillips -- Barger (PB) model, which parametrizes the amplitude in terms of a small number of free parameters. We demonstrate that this model is able to describe the recent $pp$ data on a statistically acceptable way. Additionally, we perform separate fits of the $pp$ data for each center - of - mass energy and propose a parametrization for the energy dependence of the parameters present in the PB model. As a …
The proton-proton elastic differential cross section ${\rm d}σ/{\rm d}t$ has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV energy with $β^{*}=11$ m beam optics. The Roman Pots were inserted to 13 times the transverse beam size from the beam, which allowed to measure the differential cross-section of elastic scattering in a range of the squared four-momentum transfer ($|t|$) from $0.36$ GeV$^{2}$ to $0.74$ GeV$^{2}$. The differential cross-section can be described with an exponential in the $|t|$-range between $0.36$ GeV$^{2}$ and $0.54$ GeV$^{2}$, followed by a diffractive minim…
The TOTEM experiment at the CERN LHC has measured elastic proton-proton scattering at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and four-momentum transfers squared, |t|, from 6 x $10^{-4}$ GeV$^2$ to 0.2 GeV$^2$. Near the lower end of the |t|-interval the differential cross-section is sensitive to the interference between the hadronic and the electromagnetic scattering amplitudes. This article presents the elastic cross-section measurement and the constraints it imposes on the functional forms of the modulus and phase of the hadronic elastic amplitude. The data exclude the traditional Simpl…
The TOTEM collaboration at the CERN LHC has measured the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering at $\sqrt{s} = 8\ {\rm TeV}$ in the squared four-momentum transfer range $0.2\ {\rm GeV^{2}} < |t| < 1.9\ {\rm GeV^{2}}$. This interval includes the structure with a diffractive minimum ("dip") and a secondary maximum ("bump") that has also been observed at all other LHC energies, where measurements were made. A detailed characterisation of this structure for $\sqrt{s} = 8\ {\rm TeV}$ yields the positions, $|t|_{\rm dip} = (0.521 \pm 0.007)\ {\rm GeV^2}$ and $|t|_{\rm bump} =…
The ISR and the 7 TeV LHC data indicate that the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering remains almost energy-independent at the transferred momentum $t\approx - 0.21\, \mathrm{GeV}^{2}$ at the level of $\approx 7.5 \mathrm{\ mb}/\mathrm{GeV}^{2}$. This property of $ dσ/dt$ (the "first" stationary point) appears due to the correlated growth of the total cross-section and the local slope parameter and can be expressed as a relation between the latter quantities. We anticipate that this property will be true up to 13 TeV. This enables us to normalize the preliminary TOTEM…
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at {\surd}s = 7 TeV in dedicated runs with the Roman Pot detectors placed as close as seven times the transverse beam size (sbeam) from the outgoing beams. After careful study of the accelerator optics and the detector alignment, |t|, the square of four-momentum transferred in the elastic scattering process, has been determined with an uncertainty of d t = 0.1GeV p|t|. In this letter, first results of the differential cross section are presented covering a |t|-range from 0.36 to 2.5GeV2…
Following earlier findings, we argue that the low-$|t|$ structure in the elastic diffractive cone, recently reported by the TOTEM Collaboration at $8$ TeV, is a consequence of the threshold singularity required by $t-$channel unitarity, such as revealed earlier at the ISR. By using simple Regge-pole models, we analyze the available data on the $pp$ elastic differential cross section in a wide range of c.m. energies, namely those from ISR to LHC8, obtaining good fits of all datasets. This study hints at the fact that the non-exponential behaviour observed at LHC8 is a recurrence of the low-$|t|…
