We discuss the synchronization of coupled neurons which are modelled as FitzHugh-Nagumo systems. As smallest entity in a larger network, we focus on two diffusively coupled subsystems, which can be interpreted as two mutually interacting neural populations. Each system is prepared in the excitable regime and subject to independent random fluctuations. In order to modify their cooperative dynamics, we apply a local external stimulus in form of an extended time-delayed feedback loop that involves multiple delays weighted by a memory parameter and investigate if local control applied to a subsystem can allow one to steer the global cooperative dynamics. Depending on the choice of this new control parameter, we investigate different measures to quantify the influence on synchronization: ratio of interspike intervals, power spectrum, interspike interval distribution, and phase synchronization intervals. We show that the control method is more robust for increasing memory parameter.
In this paper, we study synchronization in the delayed discrete-time complex networks. Several criterions of synchronization stability for such networks are established. And illustrative examples are presented. The numerical simulations coincide with the theoretical analysis.
Synchronization of chaotic units coupled by their time delayed variables are investigated analytically. A new type of cooperative behavior is found: sublattice synchronization. Although the units of one sublattice are not directly coupled to each other, they completely synchronize without time delay. The chaotic trajectories of different sublattices are only weakly correlated but not related by generalized synchronization. Nevertheless, the trajectory of one sublattice is predictable from the complete trajectory of the other one. The spectra of Lyapunov exponents are calculated analytically in…
We investigate synchronization between two unidirectionally linearly coupled chaotic non-identical time-delayed systems and show that parameter mismatches are of crucial importance to achieve synchronization. We establish that independent of the relation between the delay time in the coupled systems and the coupling delay time, only retarded synchronization with the coupling delay time is obtained. We show that with parameter mismatch or without it neither complete nor anticipating synchronization occurs. We derive existence and stability conditions for the retarded synchronization manifold. W…
We report a design of delay coupling for targeting desired synchronization in delay dynamical systems. We target synchronization, antisynchronization, lag-, antilag- synchronization, amplitude death (or oscillation death) and generalized synchronization in mismatched oscillators. A scaling of the size of an attractor is made possible in different synchronization regimes. We realize a type of mixed synchronization where synchronization, antisynchronization coexist in different pairs of state variables of the coupled system. We establish the stability condition of synchronization using the Kraso…
We present an analytical investigation of exact anticipating synchronization between two bi-idirectionally coupled time-delayed systems in the case when these systems are governed by two characteristic times: the delay time in the coupling and the delay time in the coupled systems. We apply our approach to interpret the results of recent first experimental observation of anticipating chaos synchronization in external cavity semiconductor lasers with optical feedback. We establish that our approach can explain the experimental results only for special cases.
We study the synchronization of time-delayed nonidentical maps subject to unidirectional (master-slave) coupling. The individual dynamics of the maps have a delay n1, and the coupling acts with a delay n2. We show analytically that, suitably tuning the slave map parameters, two distinct synchronization regimes can occur. In one regime the lag time between the slave and the master maps is given by the delay of the coupling, n2, while in the other regime is given by the difference between the delays, n1-n2. We analyze the effect of the coupling strength on the different synchronization regimes i…
We investigate synchronization in the presence of delay time modulation for application to communication. We have observed that the robust synchronization is established by a common delay signal and its threshold is presented using Lyapunov exponents analysis. The influence of the delay time modulation in chaotic oscillators is also discussed.
For the first time, using a modified Ikeda model it is demonstrated analytically that anticipating synchronization can be obtained in chaotic time-delay systems governed by two characteristic delay times. We derive existence and stability conditions for the dual-time anticipating synchronization manifold. We also show that increased anticipation times for chaotic time-delay systems with two characteristic delay times can be obtained by the use of cascaded systems.
The chaotic spike train of a homoclinic dynamical system is self-synchronized by re-inserting a small fraction of the delayed output. Due to the sensitive nature of the homoclinic chaos to external perturbations, stabilization of very long periodic orbits is possible. On these orbits, the dynamics appears chaotic over a finite time, but then it repeats with a recurrence time that is slightly longer than the delay time. The effect, called delayed self-synchronization (DSS), displays analogies with neurodynamic events which occur in the build-up of long term memories.
The present paper explores the synchronization scenario of hyperchaotic time-delayed electronic oscillators coupled indirectly via a common environment. We show that depending upon the coupling parameters a hyperchaotic time-delayed system can show in-phase or complete synchronization, and also inverse-phase or anti-synchronization. This paper reports the first experimental confirmation of synchronization of hyperchaos in time-delayed electronic oscillators coupled indirectly through a common environment. We confirm the occurrence of in-phase and inverse-phase synchronization phenomena in the …
Networks of nonlinear units with time-delayed couplings can synchronize to a common chaotic trajectory. Although the delay time may be very large, the units can synchronize completely without time shift. For networks of coupled Bernoulli maps, analytic results are derived for the stability of the chaotic synchronization manifold. For a single delay time, chaos synchronization is related to the spectral gap of the coupling matrix. For networks with multiple delay times, analytic results are obtained from the theory of polynomials. Finally, the analytic results are compared with networks of iter…
We report the first experimental demonstration of chaotic phase synchronization (CPS) in unidirectionally coupled time-delay systems using electronic circuits. We have also implemented experimentally an efficient methodology for characterizing CPS, namely the localized sets. Snapshots of the evolution of coupled systems and the sets as observed from the oscilloscope confirming CPS are shown experimentally. Numerical results from different approaches, namely phase differences, localized sets, changes in the largest Lyapunov exponents and the correlation of probability of recurrence ($C_{CPR}$),…
The attractor dimension at the transition to complete synchronization in a network of chaotic units with time-delayed couplings is investigated. In particular, we determine the Kaplan-Yorke dimension from the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for iterated maps and for two coupled semiconductor lasers. We argue that the Kaplan-Yorke dimension must be discontinuous at the transition and compare it to the correlation dimension. For a system of Bernoulli maps we indeed find a jump in the correlation dimension. The magnitude of the discontinuity in the Kaplan-Yorke dimension is calculated for networks…
We study impact of multiplexing on the global phase synchronizability of different layers in the delayed coupled multiplex networks. We find that at strong couplings, the multiplexing induces the global synchronization in sparse networks. The introduction of global synchrony depends on the connection density of the layers being multiplexed, which further depends on the underlying network architecture. Moreover, multiplexing may lead to a transition from a quasi-periodic or chaotic evolution to a periodic evolution. For the periodic case, the multiplexing may lead to a change in the period of t…
We study chaotic synchronization in networks with time-delayed coupling. We introduce the notion of strong and weak chaos, distinguished by the scaling properties of the maximum Lyapunov exponent within the synchronization manifold for large delay times, and relate this to the condition for stable or unstable chaotic synchronization, respectively. In simulations of laser models and experiments with electronic circuits, we identify transitions from weak to strong and back to weak chaos upon monotonically increasing the coupling strength.
In the real world, many complex systems are represented not by single networks but rather by sets of interdependent ones. In these specific networks, nodes in one network mutually interact with nodes in other networks. This paper focuses on a simple representative case of two-layer networks (the so-called duplex networks) with unidirectional inter-layer couplings. That is, each node in one network depends on a counterpart in the other network. Accordingly, the former network is called the response layer and the latter network is the drive layer. Specifically, synchronization between each node …
The synchronization process of two mutually delayed coupled deterministic chaotic maps is demonstrated both analytically and numerically. The synchronization is preserved when the mutually transmitted signal is concealed by two commutative private filters that are placed on each end of the communication channel. We demonstrate that when the transmitted signal is a convolution of the truncated time delayed output signals or some powers of the delayed output signals synchronization is still maintained. The task of a passive attacker is mapped onto Hilbert's tenth problem, solving a set of nonlin…
We numerically investigate the critical behavior of the synchronization transition of two unidirectionally coupled delayed chaotic systems. We map the problem to a spatially extended system to show that the synchronization transition in delayed systems exhibits universal critical properties. We find that the synchronization transition is absorbing and generically belongs to the universality class of the bounded Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, as occurs in the case of extended systems. We also argue that directed percolation critical behavior may emerge for systems with strong nonlinearities
Effects of synchronization in a system of two coupled oscillators with time-delayed feedback are investigated. Phase space of a system with time delay is infinite-dimensional. Thus, the picture of synchronization in such systems acquires many new features not inherent to finite-dimensional ones. A picture of oscillation modes in cases of identical and non-identical coupled oscillators is studied in detail. Periodical structure of amplitude death and "broadband synchronization" zones is investigated. Such a behavior occurs due to the resonances between different modes of the infinite-dimensiona…
The synchronization of chaotic lasers and the optical phase synchronization of light originating in multiple coupled lasers have both been extensively studied, however, the interplay between these two phenomena, especially at the network level is unexplored. Here we experimentally compare chaos synchronization of laser networks with heterogeneous coupling delay times to phase synchronization of similar networks. While chaotic lasers exhibit deterioration in synchronization as the network time delay heterogeneity increases, phase synchronization is found to be independent of heterogeneity. The …
In this letter we consider a prototype model which is described as an autonomous continuous time delayed differential equation with just one variable. The chaos has been investigated with variable delay time and the synchronization phenomenon is examined both numerically and analytically using the Krasovskii-Lyapunov functions. We have applied adaptive coupling law for synchronization, where the coupling equation also contains delay with modulated time. We also studied the effect of cryptography for this coupled system and the message extraction procedure is illustrated with the help of simulat…
Topologies of two, three and four time-delay-coupled chaotic semiconductor lasers are experimentally and theoretically found to show new types of synchronization. Shifted zero-lag synchronization is observed for two lasers separated by long distances even when their self-feedback delays are not equal. Shifted sub-lattice synchronization is observed for quadrilateral geometries while the equilateral triangle is zero-lag synchronized. Generalized zero-lag synchronization, without the limitation of precisely matched delays, opens possibilities for advanced multi-user communication protocols.
We describe a flexible and modular delayed-feedback nonlinear oscillator that is capable of generating a wide range of dynamical behaviours, from periodic oscillations to high-dimensional chaos. The oscillator uses electrooptic modulation and fibre-optic transmission, with feedback and filtering implemented through real-time digital-signal processing. We consider two such oscillators that are coupled to one another, and we identify the conditions under which they will synchronize. By examining the rates of divergence or convergence between two coupled oscillators, we quantify the maximum Lyapu…
We investigate and report an experimental confirmation of zero-lag synchronization (ZLS) in a system of three coupled time-delayed piecewise linear electronic circuits via dynamical relaying with different coupling configurations, namely mutual and subsystem coupling configurations. We have observed that when there is a feedback between the central unit (relay unit) and at least one of the outer units, ZLS occurs in the two outer units whereas the central and outer units exhibit inverse phase synchronization (IPS). We find that in the case of mutual coupling configuration ZLS occurs both in pe…
We experimentally demonstrate the occurrence of various synchronized states in coupled piece-wise linear time-delayed electronic circuits using dynamic environment coupling where the environment has its own intrinsic dynamics via feedback from the circuits. We carry out these experiments in two different coupling configurations, namely mutual and subsystem coupling configurations. Depending upon the coupling strength and the nature of feedback, we observe a transition from nonsynchronization to complete synchronization via phase synchronization and from nonsynchronization to inverse synchroniz…
We study the synchronization and stability of power grids within the Kuramoto phase oscillator model with inertia with a bimodal frequency distribution representing the generators and the loads. We identify critical nodes through solitary frequency deviations and Lyapunov vectors corresponding to unstable Lyapunov exponents. To cure dangerous deviations from synchronization we propose time-delayed feedback control, which is an efficient control concept in nonlinear dynamic systems. Different control strategies are tested and compared with respect to the minimum number of controlled nodes requi…
We experimentally observe the nonlinear dynamics of an optoelectronic time-delayed feedback loop designed for chaotic communication using commercial fiber optic links, and we simulate the system using delay differential equations. We show that synchronization of a numerical model to experimental measurements provides a new way to assimilate data and forecast the future of this time-delayed high-dimensional system. For this system, which has a feedback time delay of 22 ns, we show that one can predict the time series for up to several delay periods, when the dynamics is about 15 dimensional.
We present an algorithm for a time-delayed feedback control design to stabilize periodic orbits with an odd number of positive Floquet exponents in autonomous systems. Due to the so-called odd number theorem such orbits have been considered as uncontrollable by time-delayed feedback methods. However, this theorem has been refuted by a counterexample and recently a corrected version of the theorem has been proved. In our algorithm, the control matrix is designed using a relationship between Floquet multipliers of the systems controlled by time-delayed and proportional feedback. The efficacy of …
We discuss applications of time-delayed feedback control to delay-coupled neural systems and lasers, in the framework of the FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model and the Lang-Kobayashi laser model, respectively. In the context of neural systems, we will point out some complex scenarios of synchronized in-phase or antiphase oscillations, bursting patterns, or amplitude death, induced by delayed coupling in combination with delayed self-feedback in simple network motifs. For optical systems, we will show that multiple time-delayed feedback, realized by a Fabry-Perot resonator coupled to the laser, provi…
Coupled map lattices are paradigmatic models of many collective phenomena. However, quite different patterns can emerge depending on the updating scheme. While in early versions, maps were updated synchronously, there has been in recent years a concern to consider more realistic updating schemes where elements do not change all at once. Asynchronous updating schemes and the inclusion of time delays are seen as more realistic than the traditional parallel dynamics, and, in diverse works, either one or the other has been implemented separately. But are they actually distinct cases? For coupled m…
We prove an analytical limitation on the use of time-delayed feedback control for the stabilization of periodic orbits in autonomous systems. This limitation depends on the number of real Floquet multipliers larger than unity, and is therefore similar to the well-known odd number limitation of time-delayed feedback control. Recently, a two-dimensional example has been found, which explicitly demonstrates that the unmodified odd number limitation does not apply in the case of autonomous systems. We show that our limitation correctly predicts the stability boundaries in this case.
We analyze the vibrational resonance in the Duffing oscillator system in the presence of (i) a gamma distributed time-delayed feedback and (ii) integrative time-delayed (uniformly distributed time delays over a finite interval) feedback. Particularly, applying a theoretical procedure we obtain an expression for the response amplitude $Q$ at the low-frequency of the driving biharmonic force. For both double-well potential and single-well potential cases we are able to identify the regions in parameter space where either (i) two resonances, (ii) a single resonance or (iii) no resonance occur. Th…
In this paper a proposal is made of an adaptive coupling function for achieving synchronization between two lasers subject to optical feedback.Such a control scheme requires knowledge of the systems' parameters. We demonstate that when these parameters are not available on-line parameter estimation can be applied.
Synchronization commonly occurs in many natural and man-made systems, from neurons in the brain to cardiac cells to power grids to Josephson junction arrays. Transitions to or out of synchrony for coupled oscillators depend on several factors, such as individual frequencies, coupling, interaction time delays and network structure-function relation. Here, using a generalized Kuramoto model of time-delay coupled phase oscillators with frequency-weighted coupling, we study the stability of incoherent and coherent states and the transitions to or out of explosive (abrupt, first-order like) phase s…
We present the first report of the synchronization regimes in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally-coupled multiple time delay chaotic laser diodes subject to incoherent optical feedbacks and incoherent optical injection. We derive the existence conditions and numerically study the stability for lag, complete, and anticipating synchronization regimes and cascaded synchronization. We also study in detail the effect of parameter mismatches and noise on the synchronization quality. It is emphasized that sensitivity of the synchronization quality to parameter mismatches can lead to a high lev…
We investigate the possibility to suppress noise-induced intensity pulsations (relaxation oscillations) in semiconductor lasers by means of a time-delayed feedback control scheme. This idea is first studied in a generic normal form model, where we derive an analytic expression for the mean amplitude of the oscillations and demonstrate that it can be strongly modulated by varying the delay time. We then investigate the control scheme analytically and numerically in a laser model of Lang-Kobayashi type and show that relaxation oscillations excited by noise can be very efficiently suppressed via …
By studying the autocorrelation function of the optoelectronic feedback semiconductor laser output we establish that the signatures of time delays can be erased in systems incorporating modulated feedback time delays. This property is of importance for the suitability of such laser systems for secure chaos-based communication systems. We also make the first report on chaos synchronization in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally coupled multiple time delay chaotic semiconductor lasers with modulated optoelectronic feedbacks.
The stabilization of steady states is studied in a modified Lang-Kobayashi model of a semiconductor laser. We show that multiple time-delayed feedback, realized by a Fabry-Perot resonator coupled to the laser, provides a valuable tool for the suppression of unwanted intensity pulsations, and leads to stable continuous-wave operation. The domains of control are calulated in dependence on the feedback strength, delay time (cavity round trip time), memory parameter (mirror reflectivity), latency time, feedback phase, and bandpass filtering, Due to the optical feedback, multistable behavior can al…
We propose a necessary condition for the successful stabilisation of a periodic orbit using the extended version of time-delayed feedback control. This condition depends on the number of real Floquet multipliers larger than unity and is therefore related to the well-known odd-number limitation in non-autonomous systems. We show that the period of the orbit which is induced by mismatching the delay-time of the control scheme and the period of the uncontrolled orbit plays an important role in the formulation of the odd-number limitation in the autonomous case.
Small networks of chaotic units which are coupled by their time-delayed variables, are investigated. In spite of the time delay, the units can synchronize isochronally, i.e. without time shift. Moreover, networks can not only synchronize completely, but can also split into different synchronized sublattices. These synchronization patterns are stable attractors of the network dynamics. Different networks with their associated behaviors and synchronization patterns are presented. In particular, we investigate sublattice synchronization, symmetry breaking, spreading chaotic motifs, synchronizatio…
The Pyragas method of feedback control has attracted much interest as a method of stabilising unstable periodic orbits in a number of situations. We show that a time-delayed feedback control similar to the Pyragas method can be used to stabilise periodic orbits with arbitrarily large period, specifically those resulting from a resonant bifurcation of a heteroclinic cycle. Our analysis reduces the infinite-dimensional delay-equation governing the system with feedback to a three-dimensional map, by making certain assumptions about the form of the solutions. The stability of a fixed point in this…
Based on the invariance principle of differential equations, a simple adaptive-feedback scheme is proposed to strictly synchronize almost all chaotic systems. Unlike the usual linear feedback, the variable feedback strength is automatically adapted to completely synchronize two almost arbitrary identical chaotic systems, so this scheme is analytical, and simple to implement in practice. Moreover it is quite robust against the effect of noise. The famous Lorenz and R$\ddot{\textrm{o}}$ssler hyperchaos systems are used as illustrative examples.
We analyze the stabilization of unstable steady states by delayed feedback control with a periodic time-varying delay in the regime of a high-frequency modulation of the delay. The average effect of the delayed feedback term in the control force is equivalent to a distributed delay in the interval of the modulation, and the obtained distribution depends on the type of the modulation. In our analysis we use a simple generic normal form of an unstable focus, and investigate the effects of phase-dependent coupling and the influence of the control loop latency on the controllability. In addition, …
We study the synchronization of a coupled map lattice consisting of a one-dimensional chain of logistic maps. We consider global coupling with a time-delay that takes into account the finite velocity of propagation of interactions. We recently showed that clustering occurs for weak coupling, while for strong coupling the array synchronizes into a global state where each element sees all other elements in its current, present state [Physica A {\bf 325} (2003) 186, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 67} (2003) 056219]. In this paper we study the effects of in-homogeneities, both in the individual maps, which are…
In this paper we investigate a master-slave synchronization scheme of two n-dimensional non-autonomous chaotic systems coupled by sinusoidal state error feedback control, where parameter mismatch exists between the external harmonic excitation of master system and that of slave one. A concept of synchronization with error bound is introduced due to parameter mismatch, and then the bounds of synchronization error are estimated analytically. Some synchronization criteria are firstly obtained in the form of matrix inequalities by the Lyapunov direct method, and then simplified into some algebraic…
The chaotic dynamics of directly modulated semiconductor lasers with delayed optoelectronic feedback is studied numerically. The effects of positive and negative delayed optoelectronic feedback in producing chaotic outputs from such lasers with nonlinear gain reduction in its optimum value range is investigated using bifurcation diagrams. The results are confirmed by calculating the Lyapunov exponents. A negative delayed optoelectronic feedback configuration is found to be more effective in inducing chaotic dynamics to such systems with nonlinear gain reduction factor in the practical value ra…
We investigate synchronization between two unidirectionally coupled chaotic multi-feedback Ikeda systems and find both the existence and stability conditions for anticipating, lag, and complete synchronizations.Generalization of the approach to a wide class of nonlinear systems is also presented.
Delayed feedback laser dynamics is described by means of Lang-Kobayashi equation model. Since a lot of initial states asymptotically approach to periodic attractor in the phase space, only periodic steady-state regimes have been studied here. Lyapunov transformation allows us to reduce problem to the differential equation of the first order whereas the spectrum of laser oscillation is governed by the appropriate eigen value problem. Using the symmetry proves that there is the dual laser system with anticipated feedback which has the same dynamic characteristics as laser with delayed feedback.
We demonstrate a way to generate a two-dimensional rogue waves in two types of broad area nonlinear optical systems subject to time-delayed feedback: in the generic Lugiato-Lefever model and in model of a broad-area surface-emitting laser with saturable absorber. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous formation of rogue waves. In the absence of delayed feedback, spatial pulses are stationary. The rogue waves are exited and controlled by the delay feedback. We characterize their formation by computing the probability distribution of the pulse height. The long-tailed statistical c…
We demonstrate that time-delayed feedback control can be improved by adaptively tuning the feedback gain. This adaptive controller is applied to the stabilization of an unstable fixed point and an unstable periodic orbit embedded in a chaotic attractor. The adaptation algorithm is constructed using the speed-gradient method of control theory. Our computer simulations show that the adaptation algorithm can find an appropriate value of the feedback gain for single and multiple delays. Furthermore, we show that our method is robust to noise and different initial conditions.
Secure chaos based multiplex communication system scheme is proposed utilizing globally coupled semiconductor lasers with multiple variable time delay optoelectronic feedbacks.
We study the synchronization of a linear array of globally coupled identical logistic maps. We consider a time-delayed coupling that takes into account the finite velocity of propagation of the interactions. We find globally synchronized states in which the elements of the array evolve along a periodic orbit of the uncoupled map, while the spatial correlation along the array is such that an individual map sees all other maps in his present, current, state. For values of the nonlinear parameter such that the uncoupled maps are chaotic, time-delayed mutual coupling suppress the chaotic behavior …
A theoretical study of delayed feedback in spin-torque nano-oscillators is presented. A macrospin geometry is considered, where self-sustained oscillations are made possible by spin transfer torques associated with spin currents flowing perpendicular to the film plane. By tuning the delay and amplification of the self-injected signal, we identify dynamical regimes in this system such as chaos, switching between precession modes with complex transients, and oscillator death. Such delayed feedback schemes open up a new field of exploration for such oscillators, where the complex transient states…
We report on partial and global generalized synchronization in exemplar bidirectionally coupled non-identical chaotic systems with multiple time delays. We derive conditions for such synchronization regimes. The general approach is applied to the case of multiple time delay laser systems with electro-optical feedback. We also study the effect of signal sampling on the signatures of time delays in the autocorrelation function of the multiple time delay laser output.
In this paper a proposal is made of an adaptive coupling function for achieving synchronization between two lasers subject to optical feedback. Such a control scheme requires knowledge of the systems' parameters. For the first time we demonstrate that when these parameters are not available on-line parameter estimation can be applied.Generalisation of the approach to the multi-feedback systems is also presented.
Experiments with catalytic CO oxidation on Pt(110) show that chemical turbulence in this system can be suppressed by application of appropriate global delayed feedbacks. Different spatiotemporal patterns, seen near a transition from turbulence to uniform oscillations, are investigated. Using a method based on the Hilbert transform, spatial distributions of local phase and amplitude in such patterns are reconstructed from the experimental data. The observed phenomena are reproduced in simulations using a theoretical model of the reaction.
By studying laser systems with multiple time delays, we demonstrate that the signatures of time delays in the autocorrelation coefficient and the mutual information of the laser output can be erased for systems with variable time delays. This property makes such laser systems highly suitable for secure chaos-based communication systems. We also present the first report on chaos synchronization in both unidirectionally and bidirectionally coupled variable multiple time delay laser diodes with electro-optical feedbacks.
Using the model of a generalized Van der Pol oscillator in the regime of subcritical Hopf bifurcation we investigate the influence of time delay on noise-induced oscillations. It is shown that for appropriate choices of time delay either suppression or enhancement of coherence resonance can de achieved. Analytical calculations are combined with numerical simulations and experiments on an electronic circuit.
