The $r$-KdV-CH hierarchy is a generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries and Camassa-Holm hierarchies parametrized by $r+1$ constants. In this paper we clarify some properties of its multi-Hamiltonian structures, prove the semisimplicity of the associated bihamiltonian structures and the formula for their central invariants. By introducing a class of generalized Hamiltonian structures, we give in a natural way the transformation formulae of the Hamiltonian structures of the hierarchy under certain reciprocal transformation, and prove the formulae at the level of its dispersionless limit. We also consider relations of the associated bihamiltonian structures to Frobenius manifolds.
We present reciprocal transformations for the spectral problems of Korteveg de Vries (KdV) and modified Korteveg de Vries (mKdV) equations. The resulting equations, RKdV (reciprocal KdV) and RmKdV (reciprocal mKdV), are connected through a transformation that combines both Miura and reciprocal transformations. Lax pairs for RKdV and RmKdV are straightforwardly obtained by means of the aforementioned reciprocal transformations. We have also identified the classical Lie symmetries for the Lax pairs of RKdV and RmKdV. Non-trivial similarity reductions are computed and they yield non-autonomous or…
An integrable dispersionless KdV hierarchy with sources (dKdVHWS) is derived. Lax pair equations and bi-Hamiltonian formulation for dKdVHWS are formulated. Hodograph solution for the dispersionless KdV equation with sources (dKdVWS) is obtained via hodograph transformation. Furthermore, the dispersionless Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy with sources (dGDHWS) is presented.
Two binary (integral type) Darboux transformations for the KdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources are proposed. In contrast with the Darboux transformation for the KdV hierarchy, one of the two binary Darboux transformations provides non auto-Bäcklund transformation between two n-th KdV equations with self-consistent sources with different degrees. The formula for the m-times repeated binary Darboux transformations are presented. This enables us to construct the N-soliton solution for the KdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources.
We have found a possibility to streamline the proof of the Treves' theorem (Duke Math. J., 108, 251-295, 2001) on an algebraic characterization of the KdV hierarchy which makes it significantly shorter, following essentially the logic of the original proof.
A detailed description is given for the construction of the deformation of the N=2 supersymmetric $α=1$ KdV-equation, leading to the recursion operator for symmetries and the zero-th Hamiltonian structure; the solution to a longstanding problem.
An eigenvalue problem with a reference function and the corresponding hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations are proposed. The bi-Hamiltonian structure of the hierarchy is established by using the trace identity. The isospectral problem is nonlinearized as to be finite-dimensional completely integrable systems in Liouville sense under Neumann and Bargmann constraints.
We derive a Lagrangian based approach to study the compatible Hamiltonian structure of the dispersionless KdV and supersymmetric KdV hierarchies and claim that our treatment of the problem serves as a very useful supplement of the so-called r-matrix method. We suggest specific ways to construct results for conserved densities and Hamiltonian operators. The Lagrangian formulation, via Noether's theorem, provides a method to make the relation between symmetries and conserved quantities more precise. We have exploited this fact to study the variational symmetries of the dispersionless KdV equatio…
A study is presented of fully discretized lattice equations associated with the KdV hierarchy. Loop group methods give a systematic way of constructing discretizations of the equations in the hierarchy. The lattice KdV system of Nijhoff et al. arises from the lowest order discretization of the trivial, lowest order equation in the hierarchy, b_t=b_x. Two new discretizations are also given, the lowest order discretization of the first nontrivial equation in the hierarchy, and a "second order" discretization of b_t=b_x. The former, which is given the name "full lattice KdV" has the (potential) K…
Recently proposed nonholonomic deformation of the KdV equation is solved through inverse scattering method by constructing AKNS-type Lax pair. Exact and explicit N-soliton solutions are found for the basic field and the deforming function showing an unusual accelerated (decelerated) motion. A two-fold integrable hierarchy is revealed, one with usual higher order dispersion and the other with novel higher nonholonomic deformations.
We consider equations in the modified KdV (mKdV) hierarchy and make use of the Miura transformation to construct expressions for their Lax pair. We derive a Lagrangian-based approach to study the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the mKdV equations. We also show that the complex modified KdV (cmKdV) equation follows from the action principle to have a Lagrangian representation. This representation not only provides a basis to write the cmKdV equation in the canonical form endowed with an appropriate Poisson structure but also help us construct a semianalytical solution of it. The solution obtained b…
Under three relations connecting the field variables of Toda flows and that of KdV flows, we present three new sequences of combination of the equations in the Toda hierarchy which have the KdV hierarchy as a continuous limit. The relation between the Poisson structures of the KdV hierarchy and the Toda hierarchy in continuous limit is also studied.

We derive the modulation equations or Whitham equations for the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation. We show that the modulation equations are hyperbolic and admit bi-Hamiltonian structure. Furthermore they are connected by a reciprocal transformation to the modulation equations of the first negative flow of the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation. The reciprocal transformation is generated by the Casimir of the second Poisson bracket of the KdV averaged flow. We show that the geometry of the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the KdV and CH modulation equations is quite different: indeed the KdV averaged bi-Ha…
We preesent a new supersymmetric integrable extensions of the a=4,N=2 KdV hierarchy. The root of the supersymmetric Lax operator of the KdV equation is generalized, by including additional fields. This generalized root generate new hierarchy of integrable equations, for which we investigate the hamiltonian structure. In special case our system describes the interaction of the KdV equation with the two MKdV equations.
The $(n,m)^þ$ KdV hierarchy is a restriction of the KP hierarchy to a submanifold of pseudo-differential operators in a radio form. Explicit formula of the restricted Hamiltonian structure of KP is given which provides a new, more constructive proof of the isomorphism between the associated $W(n,m)$-algebra to $W_{n+m}\oplus W_m\oplus U(1)$ algebra, and the Hamiltonian property of the $(n,m)^þ$ KdV hierarchy as well as its Lax-Manakov triad representation. Similarly the Hamiltonian property for a version of modified $n^þ$ KdV and the isomorphism between $W_n$-algebra to $W_l\oplus W_m\oplus U(…
The obstructions to the existence of a hierarchy of hydrodynamic conservation laws are studied for a multicomponent dispersionless KdV system. It is shown that if an underlying algebra is Jordan, then the lowest obstruction vanishes and that all higher obstructions automatically vanish. Deformations of these multicomponent dispersionless KdV-type equations are also studied. No new obstructions appear, and hence the existence of a fully deformed hierarchy depends on the existence of a single purely hydrodynamic conservation law.
For the Harry Dym hierarchy, a non-standard Lax formulation is deduced from that of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation through a reciprocal transformation. By supersymmetrizing this Lax operator, a new N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Harry Dym hierarchy is constructed, and is further shown to be linked to one of the N=2 supersymmetric KdV equations through superconformal transformation. The bosonic limit of this new N=2 supersymmetric Harry Dym equation is related to a coupled system of KdV-MKdV equations.
The bi-Hamiltonian structure is established for the perturbation equations of KdV hierarchy and thus the perturbation equations themselves provide also examples among typical soliton equations. Besides, a more general bi-Hamiltonian integrable hierarchy is proposed and a remark is given for a generalization of the resulting perturbation equations to $1+2$ dimensions.
We study the Bäcklund symmetry for the Moyal Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy based on the Kuperschmidt-Wilson Theorem associated with second Gelfand-Dickey structure with respect to the Moyal bracket, which generalizes the result of Adler for the ordinary KdV.
We present a novel integrable non-autonomous partial differential equation of the Schwarzian type, i.e. invariant under Möbius transformations, that is related to the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. In fact, this PDE can be considered as the generating equation for the entire hierarchy of Schwarzian KdV equations. We present its Lax pair, establish its connection with the SKdV hierarchy, its Miura relations to similar generating PDEs for the modified and regular KdV hierarchies and its Lagrangian structure. Finally we demonstrate that its similarity reductions lead to the {\it full} Painlevé VI e…
We study the Whitham equations for all the higher order KdV equations. The Whitham equations are neither strictly hyperbolic nor genuinely nonlinear. We are interested in the solution of the Whitham equations when the initial values are given by a step function.
In this article we show how to construct hierarchies of partial differential equations from the vertex operator representations of toroidal Lie algebras. In the smallest example - rank 2 toroidal cover of $sl_2$ - we obtain an extension of the KdV hierarchy. We use the action of the corresponding infinite-dimensional group to construct solutions for these non-linear PDEs.
We construct the supersymmetric extensions of the Darboux-Backlund transformations (DBTs) for the Manin-Radul super KdV hierarchy using the super-pseudo-differential operators. The elementary DBTs are triggered by the gauge operators constructed from the wave functions and adjoint wave functions of the hierarchy. Iterating these elementary DBTs, we obtain not only Wronskian type but also binary type superdeterminant representations of the solutions.
The spectral problem for the quantum dispersionless Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy, aka the quantum Hopf hierarchy, is solved by Dubrovin. In this article, following Dubrovin, we study Buryak-Rossi's quantum KdV hierarchy. In particular, we prove a symmetry property and a non-degeneracy property for the quantum KdV Hamiltonians. On the basis of this we construct a complete set of common eigenvectors. The analysis underlying this spectral problem implies certain vanishing identities for combinations of characters of the symmetric group. We also comment on the geometry of the spectral curves …
We produce a hierarchiy of integrable equations by systematically adding terms to the Lax pair for the lattice modified KdV equation. The equations in the hierarchy are related to one aonother by recursion relations. These recursion relations are solved explicitly so that every equation in the hierarchy along with its Lax pair is known.
A bi--Hamiltonian formulation for stationary flows of the KdV hierarchy is derived in an extended phase space. A map between stationary flows and restricted flows is constructed: in a case it connects an integrable Henon--Heiles system and the Garnier system. Moreover a new integrability scheme for Hamiltonian systems is proposed, holding in the standard phase space.
By imposing special compatible similarity constraints on a class of integrable partial $q$-difference equations of KdV-type we derive a hierarchy of second-degree ordinary $q$-difference equations. The lowest (non-trivial) member of this hierarchy is a second-order second-degree equation which can be considered as an analogue of equations in the class studied by Chazy. We present corresponding isomonodromic deformation problems and discuss the relation between this class of difference equations and other equations of Painleve type.
This paper concerns spectral stability and time evolution of $N$-solitons in the KdV hierarchy with mixed commuting time flows. Spectral stability problem is analyzed by using a pair of self-adjoint operators with finite numbers of negative eigenvalues. We show that the absence of unstable eigenvalues in the stability problem is related to the absence of negative eigenvalues of these operators in the constrained function spaces. Time evolution of $N$-solitons is uniquely characterized from the inverse scattering transform technique.
A theory for constructing integrable couplings of soliton equations is developed by using various perturbations around solutions of perturbed soliton equations being analytic with respect to a small perturbation parameter. Multi-scale perturbations can be taken and thus higher dimensional integrable couplings can be presented. The theory is applied to the KdV soliton hierarchy. Infinitely many integrable couplings are constructed for each soliton equation in the KdV hierarchy, which contain integrable couplings possessing quadruple Hamiltonian formulations and two classes of hereditary recursi…
We study from a Hamiltonian point of view the generalized dispersionless KdV hierarchy of equations. From the so called dispersionless Lax representation of these equations we obtain three compatible Hamiltonian structures. The second and third Hamiltonian structures are calculated directly from the r-matrix approach. Since the third structure is not related recursively with the first two ones the generalized dispersionless KdV hierarchy can be characterized as a truly tri-Hamiltonian system.
It is shown that equations of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy and their conservation laws can be expressed via the whole powers of an integro-differential operator and functions provided by them.
We construct one-parameter deformation of the Dorfman Hamiltonian operator for the Riemann hierarchy using the quasi-Miura transformation from topological field theory. In this way, one can get the approximately rational symmetries of KdV equation and then investigate its bi-Hamiltonian structure.
It is well-known that the finite-gap solutions of the KdV equation can be generated by its recursion operator. We generalize the result to a special form of Lax pair, from which a method to constrain the integrable system to a lower-dimensional or fewer variable integrable system is proposed. A direct result is that the $n$-soliton solutions of the KdV hierarchy can be completely depicted by a series of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which may be gotten by a simple but unfamiliar Lax pair. Furthermore the AKNS hierarchy is constrained to a series of univariate integrable hierarchies. T…
The N=2 supersymmetric α=1 KdV hierarchy in N=2 superspace is considered and its rich symmetry structure is uncovered. New nonpolynomial and nonlocal, bosonic and fermionic symmetries and Hamiltonians, bi-Hamiltonian structure as well as a recursion operator connecting all symmetries and Hamiltonian structures of the N=2 α=1 KdV hierarchy are constructed in explicit form. It is observed that the algebra of symmetries of the N=2 supersymmetric α=1 KdV hierarchy possesses two different subalgebras of N=2 supersymmetry.
A manifestly N=2 supersymmetric coset formalism is applied to analyse the "fermionic" extensions of N=2 $a=4$ and $a=-2$ KdV hierarchies. Both these hierarchies can be obtained from a manifest N=2 coset construction. This coset is defined as the quotient of some local but non-linear superalgebra by a $\hat{U(1)}$ subalgebra. Three superextensions of N=2 KdV hierarchy are proposed, among which one seems to be entirely new.
We introduce a new integrable system hierarchy which is a restriction of the AKNS nxn hierarchy coming from an unusual splitting of the loop algebra. This splitting comes from an automorphism of the loop algebra instead of an automorphism of SL(n,C). It is known that the 2x2 KdV is the standard KdV hierarchy.
We construct the hierarchy of a multi-component generalisation of modified KdV equation and find exact solutions to its associated members. The construction of the hierarchy and its conservation laws is based on the Drinfel'd-Sokolov scheme, however, in our case the Lax operator contains a constant non-regular element of the underlying Lie algebra. We also derive the associated recursion operator of the hierarchy using the symmetry structure of the Lax operators. Finally, using the rational dressing method, we obtain the one soliton solution, and we find the one breather solution of general ra…
Using the fact that Miura transformation can be expressed in the form of gauge transformation connecting the KdV and mKdV equations, we discuss the derivation of the Bäcklund transformation and its Miura-gauge transformation connecting both hierarchies.
We consider the bi-Hamiltonian representation of the two-component coupled KdV equations discovered by Drinfel'd and Sokolov and rediscovered by Sakovich and Foursov. Connection of this equation with the supersymmetric Kadomtsev-Petviashvilli-Radul-Manin hierarchy is presented. For this new supersymmetric equation the Lax representation and odd Hamiltonian structure is given.
Based on the matrix-resolvent approach, for an arbitrary solution to the discrete KdV hierarchy, we define the tau-function of the solution, and compare it with another tau-function of the solution defined via reduction of the Toda lattice hierarchy. Explicit formulae for generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-functions are then obtained, and applications to enumeration of ribbon graphs with even valencies and to the special cubic Hodge integrals are considered.
The supersymmetry invariant integrable structure of two-dimensional superconformal field theory is considered. The classical limit of the corresponding infinite family of integrals of motion (IM) coincide with the family of IM of SUSY N=1 KdV hierarchy. The quantum version of the monodromy matrix, generating quantum IM, associated with the SUSY N=1 KdV is constructed via vertex operator representation of the quantum R-matrix. The possible applications to the perturbed superconformal models are discussed.
We show that unstable fingering patterns of two dimensional flows of viscous fluids with open boundary are described by a dispersionless limit of the KdV hierarchy. In this framework, the fingering instability is linked to a known instability leading to regularized shock solutions for nonlinear waves, in dispersive media. The integrable structure of the flow suggests a dispersive regularization of the finite-time singularities.
A complete algorithm is developed to deduce quasi-periodic solutions for the negative-order KdV (nKdV) hierarchy by using the backward Neumann systems. From the nonlinearization of Lax pair, the nKdV hierarchy is reduced to a family of backward Neumann systems via separating temporal and spatial variables. The backward Neumann systems are shown to be integrable in the Liouville sense, whose involutive solutions yield the finite parametric solutions of nKdV hierarchy. The negative-order Novikov equation is given, which specifies a finite-dimensional invariant subspace of nKdV flows. By the Abel…
Non-holonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called "squared solutions" (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to perturbed models with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV equation. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV hierarchy with generic self-consistent sources are analyzed. This allows one to formulate a set of conditions on the perturbation ter…
For an arbitrary solution to the KdV hierarchy, the generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-function of the solution can be expressed by the basic matrix resolvent via algebraic manipulations. Based on this we develop in this paper two new formulae for the generating series by introducing a pair of wave functions of the solution. Applications to the Witten--Kontsevich tau-function, to the generalized Brézin--Gross--Witten (BGW) tau-function, as well as to a modular deformation of the generalized BGW tau-function which we call the Lamé tau-function are also given.
A remarkable connection between soliton theory and an important and beautiful branch of the theory of graphical statics developed by Maxwell and his contemporaries is revealed. Thus, it is demonstrated that reciprocal triangles which constitute the simplest pair of reciprocal figures representing both a framework and a self-stress encapsulate the integrable discrete BKP equation and its Schwarzian version. The inherent Moebius invariant nature of the Schwarzian BKP equation is then exploited to define reciprocity in an inversive geometric setting. Integrable pairs of lattices of non-trivial co…
Toda lattice hierarchy and the associated matrix formulation of the $2M$-boson KP hierarchies provide a framework for the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction scheme realized through Hamiltonian action within the second KP Poisson bracket. By working with free currents, which abelianize the second KP Hamiltonian structure, we are able to obtain an unified formalism for the reduced $SL(M+1,M-k)$-KdV hierarchies interpolating between the ordinary KP and KdV hierarchies. The corresponding Lax operators are given as superdeterminants of graded $SL (M+1,M-k)$ matrices in the diagonal gauge and we describe th…
We propose a hamiltonian formulation of the $N=2$ supersymmetric KP type hierarchy recently studied by Krivonos and Sorin. We obtain a quadratic hamiltonian structure which allows for several reductions of the KP type hierarchy. In particular, the third family of $N=2$ KdV hierarchies is recovered. We also give an easy construction of Wronskian solutions of the KP and KdV type equations.
Buchstaber and Mikhailov introduced the polynomial dynamical systems in $\mathbb{C}^4$ with two polynomial integrals on the basis of commuting vector fields on the symmetric square of hyperelliptic curves. In our previous paper, we constructed the field of meromorphic functions on the sigma divisor of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 and solutions of the systems for $g=3$ by these functions. In this paper, as an application of our previous results, we construct two parametric deformation of the KdV-hierarchy. This new system is integrated in the meromorphic functions on the sigma divisor of hyp…
Lax pair and Hamiltonian formulations of the N=4 supersymmetric Toda chain (KdV) hierarchy in N=4 superspace are proposed. The general formulae for the infinite tower of its bosonic flows in terms of the Lax operator in N=4 superspace are derived. A new N=4 superfield basis in which the flows are local is constructed and its embedding in the N=4 O(4) superconformal supercurrent is established. A proof that the flows possess five complex conjugations and aninfinite-dimensional group of discrete symmetries in N=4 superspace is presented. A relation between the two descriptions of the hierarchy i…
The $\hat B_n^{(1)}$-hierarchy is constructed from the standard splitting of the affine Kac-Moody algebra $\hat B_n^{(1)}$, the Drinfeld-Sokolov $\hat B_n^{(1)}$-KdV hierarchy is obtained by pushing down the $\hat B_n^{(1)}$-flows along certain gauge orbit to a cross section of the gauge action. In this paper, we (1) use loop group factorization to construct Darboux transforms (DTs) for the $\hat B_n^{(1)}$-hierarchy, (2) give a Permutability formula and scaling transform for these DTs, (3) use DTs of the $\hat B_{n}^{(1)}$-hierarchy to construct DTs for the $\hat B_n^{(1)}$-KdV and the isotro…
We introduce a hierarchy of mutually commuting dynamical systems on a finite number of Laurent series. This hierarchy can be seen as a prolongation of the KP hierarchy, or a ``reduction'' in which the space coordinate is identified with an arbitrarily chosen time of a bigger dynamical system. Fractional KdV hierarchies are gotten by means of further reductions, obtained by constraining the Laurent series. The case of sl(3)^2 and its bihamiltonian structure are discussed in detail.
It is well known that algebro-geometric solutions of the KdV hierarchy are constructed from the Riemann theta functions associated with hyperelliptic curves, and that soliton solutions can be obtained by rational (singular) limits of the corresponding curves. In this paper, we discuss a class of KP solitons in connections with space curves, which are labeled by certain types of numerical semigroups. In particular, we show that some class of the (singular and complex) KP solitons of the $l$-th generalized KdV hierarchy with $l\ge 2$ is related to the rational space curves associated with the nu…
