The breakup of high-order spatial solitons propagating in an AlGaAs slab waveguide is studied. We experimentally observe the breakup of such beams into multiple fragments and identify the mechanism of this breakup as the combined effect of two- and three-photon-absorption. We show that the multiple breakup persists even when the value of two-photon-absorption is reduced by an order of magnitude owing to the high value of three-photon-absorption of AlGaAs at the half band-gap. The experimental results extend known mechanism of soliton breakup induced by two-photon-absorption and agree well with numerical beam propagation simulations.
It is studied the bright spatial solitons in nonlocal defocusing Kerr media with parity-time (PT) symmetric potentials. We find that these solitons can exist and be stable over a different range of potential parameters. The influence of the degree of nonlocality on the solitons and the transverse energy flow within the stable solitons are also examined.
We demonstrate ultrafast all-optical deflection of spatial solitons in an AlGaAs slab waveguide using 190 fs, 1550 nm pulses which are used to generate and deflect the spatial soliton. The steering beam is focused onto the top of the waveguide near the soliton pathway and the soliton is steered due to refractive index changes induced by optical Kerr, or free carrier (Drude) effects. Angular deflections up to 8 mR are observed.
We use Hamiltonian ray tracing and phase-space representation to describe the propagation of a single spatial soliton and soliton collisions in a Kerr nonlinear medium. Hamiltonian ray tracing is applied using the iterative nonlinear beam propagation method, which allows taking both wave effects and Kerr nonlinearity into consideration. Energy evolution within a single spatial soliton and the exchange of energy when two solitons collide are interpreted intuitively by ray trajectories and geometrical shearing of the Wigner distribution functions.
We theoretically investigate the stability and dynamics of self-channelled beams that form via nonlocal optomechanical interactions in dual-nanoweb microstructured fibers. These "optomechanicons" represent a novel class of spatial soliton.
We study numerically formation of spatial optical solitons in nematic liquid crystals with competing nonlocal nonlinearities. We demonstrate that at the sufficiently high input power the interplay between focusing and thermally induced defocusing may lead to the formation of two-peak fundamental spatial solitons. These solitons have constant spatial phase and hence represent supermodes of the self-induced extended waveguide structure. We show that these two-peak solitons are stable in propagation and exhibit adiabatic transition to a single peak state under weak absorption.
We investigate the propagation of the spatial soliton in cylindrical strongly nonlocal media by a novel method of image beam of light. The effect of the boundary on the soliton acting as the dynamic force for the soliton steering is equivalent to the force between the soliton beam and the image beam. The trajectory of the soliton is analytically studied which is in good agreement with the experimental results.
Spatial Kerr solitons, typically associated with the standard paraxial nonlinear Schroedinger equation, are shown to exist to all nonparaxial orders, as exact solutions of Maxwell's equations in the presence of vectorial Kerr effect. More precisely, we prove the existence of azimuthally polarized, spatial, dark soliton solutions of Maxwell's equations, while exact linearly polarized (2+1)-D solitons do not exist. Our ab initio approach predicts the existence of dark solitons up to an upper value of the maximum field amplitude, corresponding to a minimum soliton width of about one fourth of the…
We have reviewed recent developments of some aspects of optical spatial solitons in photorefractive media. Underlying principles governing the dynamics of photorefractive nonlinearity have been discussed using band transport model. Nonlinear dynamical equations for propagating solitons have been derived considering single as well as two-photon photorefractive processes. Fundamental properties of three types of solitons, particularly, screening, photovoltaic and screening photovoltaic solitons have been considered. For each type of solitons, three different configurations i.e., bright, dark and…
We predict that nonlinear left-handed metamaterials can support both TE- and TM-polarized self-trapped localized beams, spatial electromagnetic solitons. Such solitons appear as single- and multi-hump beams, being either symmetric or antisymmetric, and they can exist due to the hysteresis-type magnetic nonlinearity and the effective domains of negative magnetic permeability.
We prove that spatial Kerr solitons, usually obtained in the frame of nonlinear Schroedinger equation valid in the paraxial approximation, can be found in a generalized form as exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. In particular, they are shown to exist, both in the bright and dark version, as linearly polarized exactly integrable one-dimensional solitons, and to reduce to the standard paraxial form in the limit of small intensities. In the two-dimensional case, they are shown to exist as azimuthally polarized circularly symmetric dark solitons. Both one and two-dimensional dark solitons exh…
It is shown that three or more dark/gray solitons can form bound states in nonlocal media. More over dark/gray solitons can form bound states in several balance distances. Numerical simulations indicate that some of such bound states are unstable and will decay into a group of fundamental solitons, while others may be stable. There exist degenerate bound states with the same velocity, Hamiltonian, particle numbers and momentum but decaying in different ways and having different lifetimes.
We investigate the large phase shifts of the bi-color spatial soliton pair in a cylindrical lead glass rod. The theoretical study suggests a synchronous propagation of a strong pump beam and a weak signal beam under the required initial condition. We experimentally obtain a $π$ phase shift of the signal beam by changing the power of the pump beam by about 14 mW around the soliton critical power, which agrees qualitatively with our theoretical result. The ratio of the phase shift rate of the signal soliton to that of the pump soliton shows a close match to the theoretical estimation.
In this paper we investigate the properties of self induced transparency (SIT) solitons, propagating in a $Λ$-type medium. It was found that the interaction between SIT solitons can lead to trapping with their phase preserved in the ground state coherence of the medium. These phases can be altered in a systematic way by the application of appropriate light fields, such as additional SIT solitons. Furthermore, multiple independent SIT solitons can be made to propagate as bi-solitons through their mutual interaction with a separate light field. Finally, we demonstrate that control of the SIT sol…
We demonstrate experimentally that the interactions between a pair of nonlocal spatial optical solitons in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) can be controlled by the degree of nonlocality. For a given beam width, the degree of nonlocality can be modulated by varying the pretilt angle of NLC molecules via the change of the bias. When the pretilt angle is smaller than pi/4, the nonlocality is strong enough to guarantee the independence of the interactions on the phase difference of the solitons. As the pretilt angle increases, the degree of nonlocality decreases. When the degree is below its critic…
In this Letter we report observations of optically induced self-organization of colloidal arrays in the presence of un-patterned counter-propagating evanescent waves. The colloidal arrays formed along the laser propagation-axis are shown to be linked to the break-up of the incident field into optical spatial solitons, the lateral spacing of the arrays being related to modulation instability of the soft condensed matter system.
In a recent paper [A. Alberucci, C. Jisha, N. Smyth, and G. Assanto, Phys. Rev. A 91, 013841 (2015)], Alberucci et al. have studied the propagation of bright spatial solitary waves in highly nonlocal media. We find that the main results in that and related papers, concerning soliton shape and dynamics, based on the accessible soliton (AS) approximation, are incorrect; the correct results have already been published by others. These and other inconsistencies in the paper follow from the problems in applying the AS approximation in earlier papers by the group that propagated to the later papers.…
A modal expansion approach is developed and employed to investigate and elucidate the nonlinear mechanism behind the multistability and formation of coupled multi-mode polariton solitons in microcavity wires. With pump switched on and realistic dissipation parameters, truncating the expansion up to the second-order wire mode, our model predicts two distinct coupled soliton branches: stable and ustable. Modulational stability of the homogeneous solution and soliton branches stability are studied. Our simplified 1D model is in remarkably good agreement with the full 2D mean-field Gross-Pitaevski…
A novel phenomenon is discovered that the short-range interaction between strongly nonlocal spatial solitons depends sinusoidally on their phase difference. The two neighbouring solitons at close proximate can be inter-trapped via the strong nonlocality, and propagate together as a whole. The trajectory of the propagation is a straight line with its slope controlled by the phase difference. The experimental results carried out in nematic liquid crystals agree quantitatively with the prediction. Our study suggests that the phenomenon to steer optical beams by controlling the phase difference co…
The interaction between a mobile discrete dark soliton (DDS) and impurities in one-dimensional nonlinear (Kerr) photonic lattices is studied. We found that the scattering is an inelastic process where the DDS can be reflected or transmitted depending on its transversal speed and the strength of the impurities. In particular, in the reflection regime, the DDS increases its transversal speed after each scattering. A method for spatial storage of DDS solutions using two impurities is discussed, where the soliton can be trapped within a storage region until it reaches the critical speed needed to …
We introduce a two-dimensional (2D) system, which can be implemented in dual-core planar optical couplers with the Kerr nonlinearity in its cores, making it possible to blend effects of the PT symmetry, represented by the balanced linear gain and loss in the two cores, and spin-orbit coupling (SOC), emulated by a spatially biased coupling between the cores. Families of 1D and 2D solitons and their stability boundaries are identified. In the 1D setting, the addition of the SOC terms leads, at first, to shrinkage of the stability area for PT-symmetric solitons, which is followed by its rapid exp…
In analogy to a perturbed harmonic oscillator, we calculate the fundamental and some other higher order soliton solutions of the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NNLSE) in the second approximation in the generally nonlocal case. Comparing with numerical simulations we show that soliton solutions in the 2nd approximation can describe the generally nonlocal soliton states of the NNLSE more exactly than that in the zeroth approximation. We show that for the nonlocal case of an exponential-decay type nonlocal response the Gaussian-function-like soliton solutions can't describe the nonloca…
In $χ^{(2)}$ three-wave mixing, the noise-seeded spatio--temporal modulational instability has a dramatic impact on the spatial-soliton dynamics, leading to the counterintuitive observation of a soliton with no apparent participation of the high-frequency field in the process.
We investigate dissipative nonlinear dynamics in graphene-based active metamaterials composed of randomly dispersed graphene nano-flakes embedded within an externally pumped gain medium. We observe that graphene saturable nonlinearity produces a sub-critical bifurcation of nonlinear modes, enabling self-organization of the emitted radiation into several dissipative soliton structures with distinct topological charges. We systematically investigate the existence domains of such nonlinear waves and their spatio-temporal dynamics, finding that soliton vortices are unstable, thus enabling self-org…
The fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) naturally exists in the strongly nonlocal nonlinear (SNN) media and the propagation of optical beams in SNN media can be simply regarded as a self-induced FRFT. Through FRFT technic the evolution of fields in SNN media can be conveniently dealt with and an arbitrary square-integrable input field presents generally as a revivable higher order spatial soliton which reconstructs its profile periodically after every 4 times of Fourier transforms. The self-induced FRFT would illuminate the prospect of the SNN media in new applications such as continuously tun…
We introduce a new class of self-sustained states, which may exist as single solitons or form multisoliton clusters, in driven passive cylindrical microresonators. Remarkably, such states are stabilized by the radiation they emit, which strongly breaks spatial symmetry and leads to the appearance of long polychromatic conical tails. The latter induce long-range soliton interactions that make possible the formation of clusters, which can be stable if their spatial arrangement is non-collinear with the soliton rotation direction in the microcavity. The clusters are intrinsically two-dimensional …
Multimode nonlinear optics offers to overcome a long-standing limitation of fiber optics, tightly phase locking several spatial modes and enabling the coherent transport of a wavepacket through a multimode fiber. A similar problem is encountered in the temporal compression of multi-mJ pulses to few-cycle duration in hollow gas-filled fibers. Scaling the fiber length to up to six meters, hollow fibers have recently reached 1 TW of peak power. Despite the remarkable utility of the hollow fiber compressor and its widespread application, however, no analytical model exists to enable insight into t…
Dual-comb interferometry utilizes two optical frequency combs to map the optical field's spectrum to a radio-frequency signal without using moving parts, allowing improved speed and accuracy. However, the method is compounded by the complexity and demanding stability associated with operating multiple laser frequency combs. To overcome these challenges, we demonstrate simultaneous generation of multiple frequency combs from a single optical microresonator and a single continuous-wave laser. Similar to space-division multiplexing, we generate several dissipative Kerr soliton states - circulatin…
We study the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a metal surface which hosts a thin film of a liquid dielectric. The ohmic losses, that are inherently present due to the coupling of SPPs to conductors' electron plasma, induce temperature gradients and fluid deformation driven by the thermocapillary effect, which lead to a nonlinear and nonlocal change of the effective dielectric constant. The latter extends beyond the regions of highest optical intensity, and constitutes a novel thermally self-induced mechanism that affects the propagation of the SPPs. We derive the nonlinear a…
We demonstrate a robust, stable, mobile, two-dimensional (2D) spatial and three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal optical soliton in the core of an optical vortex, while all nonlinearities are of the cubic (Kerr) type. The 3D soliton can propagate with a constant velocity along the vortex core without any deformation. Stability of the soliton under a small perturbation is established numerically. Two such solitons moving along the vortex core can undergo a quasi-elastic collision at medium velocities. Possibilities of forming such a 2D spatial soliton in the core of a vortical beam are discussed…
We show dissipative spatial solitons in nonlinear optical micro-resonators in which the refractive index is laterally modulated. In addition to "normal" and "staggered" dissipative solitons, similar to those in spatially modulated conservative systems, a narrow "mid-band" soliton is shown, having no counterparts in conservative systems.
We demonstrate the first fully controlled generation of immobile and slow spatial gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems with band-gap spectra, and reveal the key features of gap solitons which distinguish them from conventional counterparts, including a dynamical transformation of gap solitons due to nonlinear inter-band coupling. We also predict theoretically and confirm experimentally the effect of anomalous steering of gap solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices.
We investigate general properties of spatial 1-dimensional bright photorefractive solitons and suggest various analytical approximations for the soliton profile and the half width, both depending on an intensity parameter r.
We observe clamping of the output spatial light distribution of a waveguide array. Using a chirped pulse amplifier we reach peak intensities in the waveguides of ~24 GW/cm2. At this level, three photon absorption in the AlGaAs material clamps the discrete spatial soliton to a set distribution. Further increase in intensity does not change the distribution.
The stability of phase domains and spatial solitons in DOPO under the presence of an injected signal is investigated. The injected signal prevents the nondegenerate regime and, for a particular value of the phase, preserves the equivalence between the two homogeneous states, allowing the domain formation and, in particular, the stability of solitons. The main conclusion is that injection facilitates the experimental observation of solitons in degenerate OPOs.
As the formation of spatial optical solitons in photorefractive media is governed by modification of the refractive index every single solitons in complex configurations of solitons can act as a single waveguide for other light beams. In this article we demonstrate guiding of amplitude modulated beams in complex configurations of photorefractive solitons carrying information and we analyze the received signal in the kHz frequency range. The possibility of data transmission combined with waveguide couplers opens the route to all-optical networks.
We develop one numerical method to compute black and gray solitons with Kerr-type nonlocal nonlinearity. As two examples of nonlocal cases, the gray soliton with exponentially decaying nonlocal response or with Gaussian nonlocal response are discussed. For such two nonlocal cases, the analytical form of the tails of nonlocal gray soliton is presented and the analytical relationship for the maximal transverse velocity of nonlocal gray soliton to the characteristic nonlocal length is obtained.
We characterize the spatial optical solitons supported by arrays of metallic nanowires embedded in Kerr-type material. The array of nanowires is described using an effective medium model and is regarded as a continuous medium. It is shown that the conditions necessary for the formation of spatial-solitons are radically different in presence of the nanowires, and in particular within the effective medium model spatial-solitons are allowed in the nanowire material only in case the host material is a "self-defocusing" material. It is proven that the characteristic soliton beamwidth is related to …
We study gray solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media and show that they are stable and can form bound states. We reveal that gray soliton velocity depends on the nonlocality degree, and that it can be drastically reduced in highly nonlocal media. This is in contrast to the case of local media, where the maximal velocity is dictated solely by the asymptotic soliton amplitude.
We introduce multi-soliton sets in the two-dimensional medium with the second-harmonic-generating nonlinearity subject to spatial modulation in the form of a triangle of singular peaks. Various families of symmetric and asymmetric sets are constructed, and their stability is investigated. Stable symmetric patterns may be built of 1, 4, or 7 individual solitons, while stable asymmetric ones contain 1, 2, or 3 solitons. Symmetric and asymmetric patterns may demonstrate mutual bistability. The shift of the asymmetric single-soliton state from the central position is accurately predicted analytica…
Defects due to growth fluctuations in broad-area semiconductor lasers induce pinning and frequency shifts of spatial laser solitons. The effects of defects on the interaction of two solitons are considered in lasers with frequency-selective feedback both theoretically and experimentally. We demonstrate frequency and phase synchronization of paired laser solitons as their detuning is varied. In both theory and experiment the locking behavior is well described by the Adler model for the synchronization of coupled oscillators.
We investigate one-dimensional Helmholtz solitons with nonlocal nonlinearity. We show an exact analytical solution to the nonlocal nonlinear nonparaxial propagation equation in the cases of high and weak nonlocality. We also numerically find that the degree of nonlocality can affect the width of nonlocal Helmholtz soliton beams, but have no effect on their stability. Contrarily, nonparaxiality can affect their stability, but have no effect on their width.
It is shown, that diffusion of saturated gain (e.g. diffusion of population inversion in lasers) causes, and/or enhances a modulational instability of generated light field. In case of a subcritical system (e.g. a laser with saturable absorber) the enhancement of the modulational instability stabilizes spatial solitons. These predictions are made for general nonlinear optical systems, and are illustrated by numerical simulation of lasers with saturable absorber.
We uncover that, in contrast to the common belief, stable dissipative solitons exist in media with uniform gain in the presence of nonuniform cubic losses, whose local strength grows with coordinate x (in one dimension) faster than |x|. The spatially-inhomogeneous absorption also supports new types of solitons, that do not exist in uniform dissipative media. In particular, single-well absorption profiles give rise to spontaneous symmetry breaking of fundamental solitons in the presence of uniform focusing nonlinearity, while stable dipoles are supported by double-well absorption landscapes. Di…
We predict the existence of spatial-spectral vortex solitons in one-dimensional periodic waveguide arrays with quadratic nonlinear response. In such vortices the energy flow forms a closed loop through the simultaneous effects of phase gradients at the fundamental frequency and second-harmonic fields, and the parametric frequency conversion between the spectral components. The linear stability analysis shows that such modes are stable in a broad parameter region.
The dynamics of two-component solitons is studied, analytically and numerically, in the framework of a system of coupled extended nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which incorporate the cross-phase modulation, pseudo-stimulated-Raman-scattering (pseudo-SRS), cross-pseudo-SRS, and spatially inhomogeneous second-order dispersion (SOD). The system models co-propagation of electromagnetic waves with orthogonal polarizations in plasmas. It is shown that the soliton's wavenumber downshift, caused by pseudo-SRS, may be compensated by an upshift, induced by the inhomogeneous SOD, to produce stable stat…
The large phase shift of strongly nonlocal spatial optical soliton(SNSOS) in the (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] lead glass is investigated using the perturbation method. The fundamental soliton solution of the nonlocal nonlinear Schodinger equation(NNLSE) under the second approximation in strongly nonlocal case is obtained. It is found that the phase shift rate along the propagation direction of such soliton is proportional to the degree of nonlocality, which indicates that one can realize Pi-phase-shift within one Rayleigh distance in (1+1)D lead glass. A full comprehension of the nonlocality-enh…
The real spectrum of bound states produced by PT-symmetric Hamiltonians usually suffers breakup at a critical value of the strength of gain-loss terms, i.e., imaginary part of the complex potential. On the other hand, it is known that the PT-symmetry can be made unbreakable in a one-dimensional (1D) model with self-defocusing nonlinearity whose strength grows fast enough from the center to periphery. The model is nonlinearizable, i.e., it does not have a linear spectrum, while the (unbreakable) PT symmetry in it is defined by spectra of continuous families of nonlinear self-trapped states (sol…
We introduce a one-dimensional model of a cavity with the Kerr nonlinearity and saturated gain, designed so as to keep solitons in the state of shuttle motion. The solitons are always unstable in the cavity bounded by the usual potential barriers, due to accumulation of noise generated by the linear gain. Complete stabilization of the shuttling soliton is achieved if the linear barrier potentials are replaced by nonlinear ones, which trap the soliton, being transparent to the radiation. The removal of the noise from the cavity is additionally facilitated by an external ramp potential. The stab…
We study analytically and numerically a kind of diffractive resonant radiation emitted by spatial solitons, which is generated in waveguide arrays with Kerr nonlinearity. The phase matching condition between soliton and radiation is derived and agrees well with direct pulse propagation simulations. The folded dispersion due to the Brillouin zone leads to a peculiar anomalous soliton recoil that we describe in detail. A linear potential applied across the array generates the analogue of the Raman self-frequency shift in optical fibers, only now applied to the wavenumber. We demonstrate that it …
We report a rich spectrum of isolated solitons residing inside ({\it embedded } into) the continuous radiation spectrum in a simple model of three-wave spatial interaction in a second-harmonic-generating planar optical waveguide equipped with a quasi-one-dimensional Bragg grating. An infinite sequence of fundamental embedded solitons are found, which differ by the number of internal oscillations. Branches of these zero-walkoff spatial solitons give rise, through bifurcations, to several secondary branches of walking solitons. The structure of the bifurcating branches suggests a multistable con…
We report on the observation and quantitative assessment of self-trapped pulsating beams in a highly non-local nonlinear regime. The experiments were conducted in nematic liquid crystals and allow a meaningful comparison with the prediction of a scalar theory in the perturbative limit, while addressing the need for beyond-paraxial analytical treatments.
We address spectral tunneling of walking spatial solitons in photorefractive media with nonlocal diffusion of the nonlinear response and an imprinted shallow optical lattice. In contrast to materials with local nonlinearities, where solitons travelling across the lattice close to the Bragg angle suffer large radiative losses, in photorefractive media with diffusion nonlinearity resulting in self-bending solitons survive when their propagation angle approaches and even exceeds the Bragg angle. In the spatial frequency domain this effect can be considered as tunneling through the band of spatial…
With reference to spatially non-local nematic liquid crystals, we develop a theory of optical spatial solitons and modulational instability in anisotropic media with arbitrarily large birefringence. Asymmetric spatial profiles and multivalued features are predicted for self-localized light versus walk-off angle. The results hold valid for generic self-focusing birefringent media and apply to large angle steering of individual and multiple self-trapped optical beams.
We study dynamical and stationary states of solitons in dual-core waveguides which are locally coupled (fused) at one or several short segments. The model applies to planar optical waveguides, and to BEC in dual traps. Collisions of an incident soliton with single and double locally-fused couplers are investigated by means of systematic simulations and several analytical methods (quasi- linear, fast-soliton, and adiabatic approximations). Excitation dynamics of a soliton trapped by a local coupler is studied by means of the variational approximation, and verified by simulations. Shuttle motion…
The light ray of a spatial soliton in an optical film whose refractive index is smoothly modulated (wavelength much larger than the typical soliton width) in both spatial directions is shown to possess chaotic regimes for which the propagation is erratic. This is interpreted as a parametric driven pendulum, obtained by a new perturbative approach of the Maxwell equation. These findings are then demonstrated to compare well to the eikonal law of light ray propagation (nonlinearity compensates diffraction).
Intense light propagating in a nonlinear medium can generate an ensemble of interacting filaments of light, or spatial solitons. Using nematic liquid crystals, we demonstrate that they undergo a collective behavior typical of complex systems, including the formation of clusters and sound-like vibrations, as well as the reduction of the configurational entropy, controlled by the degree of nonlocality of the medium.
We address the properties of two-dimensional surface solitons supported by the interface of a waveguide array whose nonlinearity is periodically modulated. When the nonlinearity strength reaches its minima at the points where the linear refractive index attains its maxima, we found that nonlinear surface waves exist and can be made stable only within a limited band of input energy flows, and for lattice depths exceeding a lower threshold.
Dynamics of solitons is considered in the framework of an extended nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE), which is derived from a system of the Zakharov's type for the interaction between high- and low-frequency (HF and LF) waves. The resulting NLSE includes a pseudo-stimulated-Raman-scattering (pseudo-SRS) term, i.e., a spatial-domain counterpart of the SRS term, which is a known ingredient of the temporal-domain NLSE in optics. Also included is inhomogeneity of the spatial second-order dispersion (SOD) and linear losses of HF waves. It is shown that wavenumber downshift by the pseudo-SRS may…
