In this Letter we report observations of optically induced self-organization of colloidal arrays in the presence of un-patterned counter-propagating evanescent waves. The colloidal arrays formed along the laser propagation-axis are shown to be linked to the break-up of the incident field into optical spatial solitons, the lateral spacing of the arrays being related to modulation instability of the soft condensed matter system.
We report on phenomenon of Anderson-type localization of walking solitons in optical lattices with random frequency modulation, manifested as dramatic enhancement of soliton trapping probability on lattice inhomogeneities with growth of the frequency fluctuation level. The localization process is strongly sensitive to the lattice depth since in shallow lattices walking solitons experience random refraction and/or multiple scattering in contrast to relatively deep lattices, where solitons are typically immobilized in the vicinity of local minimums on modulation frequency.
We address the existence and properties of solitons in thermal media with periodic modulation of linear refractive index. Many kinds of solitons in such optical lattices, including symmetric and antisymmetric lattices, are found under different conditions. We study the influence of the refractive index difference between two different layers on solitons. It is also found that there do not exist cutoff value of propagation constant and soliton power for shifted lattice solitons. In addition, the solitons launched away from their stationary position may propagate without oscillation when the con…
An effort was conducted to numerically determine, using the Nonlinear Schrodinger Split-Step Fourier method, if using cross phase modulation could cause temporal soliton pulse propagation in a silicon slow-light photonic crystal waveguide shorter than a millimeter. The simulations demonstrated that due to the higher powers and shorter scales of photonic crystals, two-photon absorption would cause an optical soliton pulse to be extremely dissipative. The model demonstrated, however, that by utilizing cross-phase modulation, it is possible to sustain a compressed soliton pulse within a silicon p…
We experimentally and numerically study the use of intensity modulation for the controlled addressing of temporal Kerr cavity solitons. Using a coherently driven fiber ring resonator, we demonstrate that a single temporally broad intensity modulation pulse applied on the cavity driving field permits systematic and efficient writing and erasing of ultrashort cavity solitons. We use numerical simulations based on the mean-field Lugiato-Lefever model to investigate the addressing dynamics, and present a simple physical description of the underlying physics.
We investigate the large phase shifts of the bi-color spatial soliton pair in a cylindrical lead glass rod. The theoretical study suggests a synchronous propagation of a strong pump beam and a weak signal beam under the required initial condition. We experimentally obtain a $π$ phase shift of the signal beam by changing the power of the pump beam by about 14 mW around the soliton critical power, which agrees qualitatively with our theoretical result. The ratio of the phase shift rate of the signal soliton to that of the pump soliton shows a close match to the theoretical estimation.
Modulation instability with subsideband generation induced by periodic power variation in soliton fiber ring lasers is reported. We found that different wavelength shifts of subsideband generation are related to different periodic power variation. The period of power variation and wavelength shifts of subsideband can be changed by altering the linear cavity phase delay. It is also found that the periodic power variation is caused by the interaction between the nonuniform polarization state of the circulating light and the polarizer in the laser cavity.
We demonstrate protected single-soliton formation and operation in a Kerr microresonator using a phase-modulated pump laser. Phase modulation gives rise to spatially varying effective loss and detuning parameters, which in turn lead to an operation regime in which multi-soliton degeneracy is lifted and a single soliton is the only observable behavior. Direct excitation of single solitons is indicated by observed reversal of the characteristic 'soliton step.' Phase modulation also enables precise control of the soliton pulse train's properties, and measured dynamics agree closely with simulatio…
The generation of high-intensity optical fields from harmonic-wave photons, interacting via a cross-phase modulation with dark solitons both propagating in a Kerr nonlinear medium, is examined. The focus is on a pump consisting of time-entangled dark-soliton patterns, forming a periodic waveguide along the path of the harmonic-wave probe. It is shown that an increase of the strength of cross-phase modulation respective to the self-phase modulation, favors soliton-mode proliferation in the bound-state spectrum of the trapped harmonic-wave probe. The induced soliton modes, which display the stru…
Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis of the effect of partial incoherence on the transverse instability of soliton structures in nonlinear Kerr media is presented. It is explicitly shown, that for a Lorentzian incoherence spectrum the partial incoherence gives rise to a damping which counteracts, and tends to suppress, the transverse instability growth. However, the general picture is more complicated and it is shown that the effect of the partial incoherence depends crucially on the form of the incoherence spectrum. In fact, for spectra with finite rms-width, the partial inc…
We unveil the relation between the linear Anderson localisation process and nonlinear modulation instability. Anderson localised modes are formed in certain temporal intervals due to the random background noise. Such localised modes seed the formation of solitary waves that will appear during the modulation instability process at those preferred intervals. Afterwards, optical-event horizon effects between dispersive waves and solitons produce an artificial collective acceleration that favours the collision of solitons, which could eventually lead to a rogue-soliton generation.
We propose a method for soliton formation in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators through input phase modulation. Our numerical simulations of a variant of the Lugiato-Lefever equation suggest that modulating the input phase at a frequency equal to the resonator free-spectral-range and at modest modulation depths provides a deterministic route towards soliton formation in WGM resonators without undergoing a chaotic phase. We show that the generated solitonic state is sustained when the modulation is turned off adiabatically. Our results support parametric seeding as a powerful means of con…
We introduce multi-soliton sets in the two-dimensional medium with the second-harmonic-generating nonlinearity subject to spatial modulation in the form of a triangle of singular peaks. Various families of symmetric and asymmetric sets are constructed, and their stability is investigated. Stable symmetric patterns may be built of 1, 4, or 7 individual solitons, while stable asymmetric ones contain 1, 2, or 3 solitons. Symmetric and asymmetric patterns may demonstrate mutual bistability. The shift of the asymmetric single-soliton state from the central position is accurately predicted analytica…
We introduce a model of one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) optical media with the $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity whose local strength is subject to cusp-shaped spatial modulation, $χ^{(2)}\sim r^{-α}$, with $α>0$, which can be induced by spatially nonuniform poling. Using analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate that this setting supports 1D and 2D fundamental solitons, at $α<1$ and $α<2$, respectively. The 1D solitons have a small instability region, while the 2D solitons have a stability region at $α<0.5$ and are unstable at $α>0.5$. 2D solitary vortices are found too. They are unstable, s…
The conditions under which stable evolution of two nonlinear interacting waves are derived within the context of nematic crystals. Two cases are considered: plane waves and solitons. In the first case, the modulation instability analysis reveals that while the nonlocal term suppresses the growth rates, substantially, the coupled system exhibits significantly higher growth rates than its scalar counterpart. In the soliton case, the necessary conditions are derived that lead the solitons to exhibit stable, undistorted evolution, suppressing any breathing behavior and radiation, leading to solito…
We theoretically study the spatial focusing of surface polaritons (SPs) in a negative index metamaterial (NIMM)-atomic gas interface waveguide system, based on cross phase modulation (XPM) in a tripod type double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) scheme. In the linear region, we realize the low loss stable propagation of SPs, and the group velocities of the probe and signal fields are well matched via double EIT. In the nonlinear region, we show that giant enhancement of the XPM can be obtained. Using a narrow optical soliton in free space, we realize spatial focusing of the SPs s…
We address vortex solitons supported by optical lattices featuring modulation of both the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We find that when the modulation is out-of-phase the competition between both effects results in remarkable shape transformations of the solitons which profoundly affect their properties and stability. Nonlinear refractive index modulation is found to impose restrictions on the maximal power of off-site solitons, which are shown to be stable only below a maximum nonlinearity modulation depth.
In this work, we introduce a method for stabilizing spatiotemporal solitons. These solitons correspond to light bullets in multimode optical fiber lasers, energy-scalable waveguide oscillators and amplifiers, localized coherent patterns in Bose-Einstein condensates, etc. We show that a three-dimensional confinement potential, formed by a spatial transverse (radial) parabolic graded refractive index and dissipation profile, combined with quadratic temporal phase modulation, may permit the generation of stable spatiotemporal dissipative solitons. This corresponds to combining phase mode-locking …
Temporal cavity solitons (CSs) are persisting pulses of light that can manifest themselves in continuously driven passive resonators, such as macroscopic fiber ring cavities and monolithic microresonators. Experiments so far have demonstrated two techniques for their excitation, yet both possess drawbacks in the form of system complexity or lack of control over soliton positioning. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new CS writing scheme that alleviates these deficiencies. Specifically, we show that temporal CSs can be excited at arbitrary positions through direct phase modulation of the cav…
Temporal optical solitons have been the subject of intense research due to their intriguing physics and applications in ultrafast optics and supercontinuum generation. Conventional bright optical solitons result from the interaction of anomalous group-velocity dispersion and self-phase modulation. Here we report the discovery of an entirely new class of bright solitons arising purely from the interaction of negative fourth-order dispersion and self-phase modulation, which can occur even for normal group-velocity dispersion. We provide experimental and numerical evidence of shape-preserving pro…
With reference to spatially non-local nematic liquid crystals, we develop a theory of optical spatial solitons and modulational instability in anisotropic media with arbitrarily large birefringence. Asymmetric spatial profiles and multivalued features are predicted for self-localized light versus walk-off angle. The results hold valid for generic self-focusing birefringent media and apply to large angle steering of individual and multiple self-trapped optical beams.
We address the properties and dynamical stability of one-dimensional vector lattice solitons in Kerr-type cubic medium with harmonic transverse modulation of refractive index. We discovered that unstable families of scalar lattice solitons can be stabilized via the cross-phase modulation (XPM) in the vector case. It was found that multi-humped vector solitons that are unstable in uniform media where XPM strength is higher than that of self-phase modulation, can also be stabilized by the lattice.
We demonstrate soliton-effect pulse compression in mm-long photonic crystal waveguides resulting from strong anomalous dispersion and self-phase modulation. Compression from 3ps to 580fs, at low pulse energies(~10pJ), is measured via autocorrelation.
We consider the propagation of solitons in media with an imprinted transverse periodic or parabolic refractive index modulation when the modulation depth slightly fluctuates along the propagation direction. We find that, under suitable spectral resonance conditions, small transverse soliton oscillations may get parametrically amplified.
We analyze temporal and spectral characteristics of Akhmediev breather and establish amplification and transmission of attenuated multi-soliton in nonlinear optical fiber. Our results show that the attenuated multi-soliton can be converted into Akhmediev breather through a judicious modulation of the spectrum. Subsequently, the maximally compressed pulse train of Akhmediev breather can be used to establish a robust breathing transmission by another spectrum modulation. In addition, the influence of the spectral modulation intensity on the excitation of Akhmediev breather and transmission of ma…
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the optical beam propagation in the nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy, which is aligned homeotropically in a $80μm$-thickness planar cell in the presence of an externally voltage. It is predicted that the nonlocal nonlinearity of liquid crystal undergo an oscillatory response function with a negative nonlinear refractive index coefficient. We found that the oscillatory nonlocal nonlinearity can support stable bright solitons, which are observed in experiment. We also found that abnormal modulation instability occurs with …
We report results of the investigation of gap solitons (GSs) in the generic model of a periodically modulated Bragg grating (BG), which includes periodic modulation of the BG chirp or local refractive index, and periodic variation of the local reflectivity. We demonstrate that, while the previously studied reflectivity modulation strongly destabilizes all solitons, the periodic chirp modulation, which is a novel feature, stabilizes a new family of double-peak fundamental BGs in the side bandgap at negative frequencies (gap No. -1), and keeps solitons stable in the central bandgap (No. 0). The …
It has been established for some time that high-power pump can trap a probe beam of lower intensity that is simultaneously propagating in a Kerr-type optical medium, inducing a focusing of the probe with the emergence of modes displaying solitonic properties. To understand the mechanism by which such self-sustained modes are generated, and mainly the changes on probe spectrum induced by the cross-phase-modulation effect for an harmonic probe trapped by a multiplex of temporal pulses, a linear equation (for the probe) and a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (for the pump) both coupled by a cross-p…
We develop stability analysis for matter-wave solitons in a two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice (OL), to which periodic time modulation is applied, in different forms. The stability is studied by dint of the variational approximation and systematic simulations. For solitons in the semi-infinite gap, well-defined stability patterns are produced under the action of the attractive nonlinearity, clearly exhibiting the presence of resonance frequencies. The analysis is reported for several time-modulation formats, including the case of in-phase modulations of …
Dissipative Kerr-microresonator soliton combs (hereafter called soliton combs) has been rapidly progressing as compact frequency combs. Comb mode scanning of the soliton combs with a large range and fast speed is of paramount importance for applications such as LiDAR and spectroscopy, requiring large and rapid frequency scanning of a pump continuous-wave (CW) laser as well as resonance frequency of a microresonator. Here, we demonstrate the generation of a soliton comb by a distributed feedback (DFB) laser toward the comb mode scanning with a large range and fast speed. Compared with conventio…
We give a qualitative explanation of the analog of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) recurrence in a one-dimensional focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). That recurrence can be considered as a result of the nonlinear development of modulation instability. All known exact localized solitons-type solutions describing propagation on the background of the modulationally unstable condensate show the recurrence to the condensate state after its interaction with solitons. The condensate state locally recovers its original form with the same amplitude but a different phase after soliton leave its …
A model of the optical media with a spatially structured Kerr nonlinearity is introduced. The nonlinearity strength is modulated by a set of singular peaks on top of a self-focusing or defocusing uniform background. The peaks may include a repulsive or attractive linear potential too. We find that a pair of mutually symmetric peaks readily gives rise to the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of modes pinned to individual peaks, while antisymmetric pinned modes are always unstable, transforming into robust spatially odd breathers. Three- and five-peak structures support symmetric modes, with i…
We consider two-component solitons in a medium with a periodic modulation of the nonlinear coefficient. The modulation enables the existence of complex multihump vector states. In particular, vector solitons composed of dipole and fundamental, or dipole and even double-hump components exist and may be stable. Families of unstable scalar solitons can be stabilized in the vectorial form, due to the coupling to a stable second component.
It is shown, that diffusion of saturated gain (e.g. diffusion of population inversion in lasers) causes, and/or enhances a modulational instability of generated light field. In case of a subcritical system (e.g. a laser with saturable absorber) the enhancement of the modulational instability stabilizes spatial solitons. These predictions are made for general nonlinear optical systems, and are illustrated by numerical simulation of lasers with saturable absorber.
We address necklace solitons supported by circular waveguide arrays with out-of-phase modulation of nonlinearity and linear refractive index. Such two-dimensional necklace solitons appear as rings of multiple out-of-phase bright spots. We show that necklace solitons are stable if their peak intensity is low or moderate and that the domain of stability shrinks with increasing nonlinearity modulation depth. However, we find that the stability domains expand with increasing number of necklace spots.
The existence of a novel type of solitons in periodic Kerr media constructed as superposition of noninteracting gap-solitons of different kinds (bright, dark and periodic) is first demonstrated. The periodic modulation of the nonlinearity is used to suppress the cross phase modulation between components to allow the superimposed beam to propagate for long distances.
We study linear transmission and nonlinear soliton transport through quasi-periodic structures, which profiles are described by multiple modulation frequencies. We show that resonant scattering at mixed-frequency resonances limits transmission efficiency of localized wave packets, leading to radiation and possible trapping of solitons. We obtain an explicit analytical expression for optimal quasi-periodic lattice profiles, where additional aperiodic modulations suppress mixed-frequency resonances, resulting in dramatic enhancement of soliton mobility. Our results can be applied to the design o…
We introduce a setting based on the one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with the self-focusing (SF) cubic term modulated by a singular function of the coordinate, |x|^{-a}. It may be additionally combined with the uniform self-defocusing (SDF) nonlinear background, and with a similar singular repulsive linear potential. The setting, which can be implemented in optics and BEC, aims to extend the general analysis of the existence and stability of solitons in NLSEs. Results for fundamental solitons are obtained analytically and verified numerically. The solitons feature a …
Nonlinear light propagation in a single-mode micron-size waveguide made of semiconducting excitonic material has been theoretically studied in terms of exciton-polaritons by using an analysis based on macroscopic fields. When a light pulse is spectrally centered in the vicinity of the ground-state Wannier exciton resonance, it interacts with the medium nonlinearly. This optical cubic nonlinearity is caused by the repulsive exciton-exciton interactions in the semiconductor, and at resonance it is orders of magnitude larger than the Kerr nonlinearity (e.g., in silica). We demonstrate that a very…
We analytically study rogue-wave (RW) solutions and rational solitons of an integrable fifth-order nonlinear Schrödinger (FONLS) equation with three free parameters. It includes, as particular cases, the usual NLS, Hirota, and Lakshmanan-Porsezian-Daniel (LPD) equations. We present continuous-wave (CW) solutions and conditions for their modulation instability in the framework of this model. Applying the Darboux transformation to the CW input, novel first- and second-order RW solutions of the FONLS equation are analytically found. In particular, trajectories of motion of peaks and depressions o…
It has been recently demonstrated that self-defocusing (SDF) media with the cubic nonlinearity, whose local coefficient grows from the center to periphery fast enough, support stable bright solitons, without the use of any linear potential. Our objective is to test the genericity of this mechanism for other nonlinearities, by applying it to one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) quintic SDF media. The models may be implemented in optics (in particular, in colloidal suspensions of nanoparticles), and the 1D model may be applied to the description of the Tonks-Girardeau gas of ultracold bosons. In…
A Kerr microresonator frequency comb has enabled the generation of low-phase-noise millimeter- and terahertz-waves in conjunction with an ultrafast photodiode. It is intriguing to employ the new light source in wireless communication at above 100 GHz band, where a carrier signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio is desired to achieve higher data rates. In this study, we demonstrate two simple and efficient architectures of wireless links based on a microresonator comb. We show experimentally that simultaneous modulation and detection of multiple comb lines result in >10 times stronger modulati…
We report a modulational instability (MI) analysis of a mathematical model appropriate for ultrashort pulses in cascaded quadratic-cubic nonlinear media beyond the so-called slowly varying envelope approximation. Theoretically predicted MI properties are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulation. The study shows the possibility of controlling the generation of MI and formation of solitons in a cascaded quadratic-cubic media in the few cycle regimes. We also find that stable propagation of soliton-like few-cycle pulses in the medium is subject to the fulfilment of the modulation i…
In $χ^{(2)}$ three-wave mixing, the noise-seeded spatio--temporal modulational instability has a dramatic impact on the spatial-soliton dynamics, leading to the counterintuitive observation of a soliton with no apparent participation of the high-frequency field in the process.
The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients has applications in numerous areas of physics, specifically in the context of nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensate. Apart from the usual bright and dark-soliton solutions, the so-called rational soliton solutions are perceived to have tremendous impact in futuristic applications and understanding many natural phenomena. In this work, we have studied various orders of rational solution of the variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is possible to extract the first and the second-order controlled KM-like breath…
A conceptually new notion of hydrodynamic optical soliton tunneling is introduced in which a dark soliton is incident upon an evolving, broad potential barrier that arises from an appropriate variation of the input signal. The barriers considered include smooth rarefaction waves and highly oscillatory dispersive shock waves. Both the soliton and the barrier satisfy the same one-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, which admits a convenient dispersive hydrodynamic interpretation. Under the scale separation assumption of Whitham modulation theory the highly nontrivial non…
The subject of the work is the stabilization of two-dimensional (2D) two-component (vector) solitons, in media with the attractive cubic nonlinearity, against the collapse by a linear lattice (LL, which is induced by a periodic modulation of the refractive index in optics, or created as an optical lattice in BEC), or by a nonlinear lattice (NL, induced by a periodic modulation of the nonlinearity coefficient). We demonstrate that, due to the XPM (cross-phase-modulation) coupling between the components, the LL or NL acting on a single component is sufficient for the stabilization of vector soli…
We study spatial optical solitons in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal created by an array of thin-film nonlinear waveguides, the so-called Dirac-comb nonlinear lattice. We analyze modulational instability of the extended Bloch-wave modes and also investigate the existence and stability of bright, dark, and ``twisted'' spatially localized modes in such periodic structures. Additionally, we discuss both similarities and differences of our general results with the simplified models of nonlinear periodic media described by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, derived in the tig…
We present stable bright solitons built of coupled unstaggered and staggered components in a symmetric system of two discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations with the attractive self-phase-modulation (SPM) nonlinearity, coupled by the repulsive cross-phase-modulation (XPM) interaction. These mixed modes are of a "symbiotic" type, as each component in isolation may only carry ordinary unstaggered solitons. The results are obtained in an analytical form, using the variational and Thomas-Fermi approximations (VA and TFA), and the generalized Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion for the evalua…
The channel law for amplitude-modulated solitons transmitted through a nonlinear optical fibre with ideal distributed amplification and a receiver based on the nonlinear Fourier transform is a noncentral chi-distribution with $2n$ degrees of freedom, where $n=2$ and $n=3$ correspond to the single- and dual-polarisation cases, respectively. In this paper, we study capacity lower bounds of this channel under an average power constraint in bits per channel use. We develop an asymptotic semi-analytic approximation for a capacity lower bound for arbitrary $n$ and a Rayleigh input distribution. It i…
We introduce novel optical solitons that consist of a periodic and a spatially localized components coupled nonlinearly via cross-phase modulation. The spatially localized optical field can be treated as a gap soliton supported by the optically-induced nonlinear grating. We find different types of these band-gap composite solitons and demonstrate their dynamical stability.
We overview the properties of nonlinear guided waves and (bright and dark) spatial optical solitons in a periodic medium created by a sequence of linear and nonlinear layers. First, we consider a single layer with a cubic nonlinear response (a nonlinear waveguide) embedded into a periodic layered linear medium, and describe nonlinear localized modes (guided waves and Bragg-like localized gap modes) and their stability. Then, we study modulational instability as well as the existence and stability of discrete spatial solitons in a periodic array of identical nonlinear layers, a one-dimensional …
