We report the direct observation of the current-driven domain wall (DW) motion by magnetic force microscopy in a structured Co/Ni wire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The wire has notches to define the DW position. It is demonstrated that single current pulses can precisely control the DW position from notch to notch with high DW velocity of 40 m/s.
Ferromagnetic films of L10-ordered MnGa and MnAl that exhibit giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and great controllability in the magnetism and structural disorders show promise not only in the applications in magnetic recording, permanent magnets and spintronics, but also in controllable studies of disorder-relevant electrical transport phenomena. In this article, we review the intriguing experimental observations of the orbital two-channel Kondo effect and anomalous Hall effect in L10-ordered MnGa and MnAl thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We also give a perspective wit…

Thickness modulation at the edges of nanostructured magnetic thin films is shown to have important effects on their perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Thin film wires with tapered edges were made from [Co/Pd]20 multilayers or L10-FePt films using liftoff with a double layer resist. The effect of edge taper on the reversal process was studied using magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic modeling. In [Co/Pd]20 the anisotropy was lower in the tapered edge regions which switched at a lower reverse field compared to the center of the wire. The L10-FePt wires showed opposite behavior with the t…
Flexible control of magnetization switching by electrical manners is crucial for applications of spin-orbitronics. Besides of a switching current that is parallel to an applied field, a bias current that is normal to the switching current is introduced to tune the magnitude of effective damping-like and field-like torques and further to electrically control magnetization switching. Symmetrical and asymmetrical control over the critical switching current by the bias current with opposite polarities is both realized in Pt/Co/MgO and $α$-Ta/CoFeB/MgO systems, respectively. This research not only …
Electrical manipulation of magnetization is essential for integration of magnetic functionalities such as magnetic memories and magnetic logic devices into electronic circuits. The current induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) in heavy metal/ferromagnet (HM/FM) bilayers via the spin Hall effect in the HM and/or the Rashba effect at the interfaces provides an efficient way to switch the magnetization. In the meantime, current induced SOT has also been used to switch the in-plane magnetization in single layers such as ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As and antiferromagnetic metal CuMnAs with global…
We have measured the resistance noise of copper metallic wires during a tensile stress. The time variation of the main resistance is continuous up to the wire breakdown, but its fluctuations reveal the intermittent and heterogeneous character of plastic flow. We show in particular direct correlations between strengthening mechanisms and noise spectra characteristics.
Structure and properties of nanoparticles formed under conditions of wire electrical explosion were studied. It was shown that the state of WEE power particles can be characterized as a metastable state. It leads to an increased stability of nanopowders at normal temperatures and an increased reactivity during heating, which is revealed in the form of threshold phenomena.
Electrical conduction through a two-terminal molecular device is studied using non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) formalism. Such junction is made of a short linear wire which is connected to the metallic electrodes. Molecule itself is described with the help of Huckel (tight-binding) model with the electron interactions treated within extended Hubbard model (EHM), while the coupling to the electrodes is described with the help of a broad-band theory. Coulomb interactions within molecular wire are treated by means of the restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) approximation. In particular, the inf…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [Co/Pd]15 and L10-FePt nanowire arrays of period 63 nm with linewidths 38 nm and 27 nm and film thickness 27 nm and 20 nm respectively were fabricated using a self-assembled PS-b-PDMS diblock copolymer film as a lithographic mask. The wires are predicted to support Neel walls in the Co/Pd and Bloch walls in the FePt. Magnetostatic interactions from nearest neighbor nanowires promote a ground state configuration consisting of alternating up and down magnetization in adjacent wires. This was observed over ~75% of the Co/Pd wires after ac-demagnetization but was …
We analyze a new family of carbon nanotube-based molecular wires, formed by encapsulating metallocene molecules inside the nanotubes. Our simulations, that are based on a combination of non-equilibrium Green function techniques and density functional theory, indicate that these wires can be engineered to exhibit desirable magnetotransport effects for use in spintronics devices. The proposed structures should also be resilient to room-temperature fluctuations, and are expected to have a high yield.
The rectifying effect of radio-frequency (RF) current is highly sensitive in terms of the spatial spin distribution and dynamics. It emerged that an additional spin wave mode was stimulated by the direct-current (DC) current and that this spin wave was detectable via rectification of the RF current. A phenomenological model to describe the time-dependent anisotropic magnetoresistance or time-dependent planer Hall effect is proposed and found to correlate well to the experimental results. The nonlinear spin dynamics accompanying additional spin waves are studied as functions of the RF and DC cu…
A state of an electron in a quantum wire or a thin film becomes metastable, when a static electric field is applied perpendicular to the wire direction or the film surface. The state decays via tunneling through the created potential barrier. An additionally applied magnetic field, perpendicular to the electric field, can increase the tunneling decay rate for many orders of magnitude. This happens, when the state in the wire or the film has a velocity perpendicular to the magnetic field. According to the cyclotron effect, the velocity rotates under the barrier and becomes more aligned with the…
Towards next-generation spintronics devices, such as computer memories and logic chips, it is necessary to satisfy high thermal stability, low-power consumption and high spin-polarization simultaneously. Here, from first-principles, we investigate thermal stability (both structure and magnetization) and the electric field control of magnetic anisotropy on Co2FeAl (CFA)/MgO. A phase diagram of structural thermal stability of the CFA/MgO interface is illustrated. An interfacial perpendicular-anisotropy, coming from the Fe-O orbital hybridization, provides high magnetic thermal stability and a lo…
A fourteen-fold anisotropy in the spin transport efficiency parallel and perpendicular to the charge transport is observed in a vertically-biased (Ga,Mn)As-based spin-polarized light emitting diode. The spin polarization is determined by measuring the polarization of electroluminescence from an (In,Ga)As quantum well placed a distance d (20 to 420 nm) below the p-type ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As contact. In addition, a monotonic increase from 0.5 to 7% in the polarization is measured as d decreases for collection parallel to the growth direction, while the in-plane polarization from the perpendicu…
The potentiality of composition graded AlMgSi wires for optimized combination of electrical conductivity and torsion strength has been investigated. Composition graded wires were obtained by co-drawing commercially pure Al with an AlMgSi alloy followed by diffusion annealing. Diffusion gradients and local hardening response to precipitation treatments were evaluated thanks to nano-indentation measurements. Resulting microstructures with spatial gradients of nanoscaled precipitates were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Finally, it is shown that such graded structures give rise…
We present electrical measurements of high-frequency magnetic dynamics excited by spin-polarized currents in Co/Cu/Ni80Fe20 nanopillar devices, with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the sample layers. As a function of current and magnetic field, the dynamical phase diagram contains several distinguishable precessional modes and also static magnetic states. Using detailed comparisons with numerical simulations, we provide rigorous tests of the theory of spin-transfer torques.
The objective of this work is to study the magnetic properties of arrays of Ni-Fe nanowires electrodeposited in different template materials such as porous silicon, polycarbonate and alumina. Magnetic properties were studied as a function of template material, applied magnetic field (parallel and perpendicular) during deposition, wire length, as well as magnetic field orientation during measurement. The results show that application of magnetic field during deposition strongly influences the c-axis preferred orientation growth of Ni-Fe nanowires. The samples with magnetic field perpendicular t…
Here we study incoherent transport through molecular wire treated as a linear chain of absorbers, where the phase-breaking processes are modeled by the use of imaginary point-like potentials. The calculations are performed within a transfer-matrix method of the scattering theory. An analytic expression for the transmission of a finite chain in obtained, while the electrical current is then computed with the help of the Tsu-Esaki formula. In particular, it is shown that the maximal current dependence on the wire length is exponential.
Electrical spin injection from ferromagnetic $δ$-MnGa into an (Al,Ga)As p-i-n light emitting diode (LED) is demonstrated. The $δ$-MnGa layers show strong perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy, enabling detection of spin injection at remanence without an applied magnetic field. The bias and temperature dependence of the spin injection are found to be qualitatively similar to Fe-based spin LED devices. A Hanle effect is observed and demonstrates complete depolarization of spins in the semiconductor in a transverse magnetic field.
We have prepared the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) InMnAs with different Mn concentrations by ion implantation and pulsed laser melting. The Curie temperature of the In1-xMnxAs epilayer depends on the Mn concentration x, reaching 82 K for x=0.105. The substitution of Mn ions at the Indium sites induces a compressive strain perpendicular to the InMnAs layer and a tensile strain along the in-plane direction. This gives rise to a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is often needed for the demonstration of electrical control of magnetization and for spin-transfer-torque induced ma…
Molecular wires are essential components for future nanoscale electronics. However, the preparation of individual long conductive molecules is still a challenge. MMX metal-organic polymers are quasi-one-dimensional sequences of single halide atoms (X) bridging subunits with two metal ions (MM) connected by organic ligands. They are excellent electrical conductors as bulk macroscopic crystals and as nanoribbons. However, according to theoretical calculations, the electrical conductance found in the experiments should be even higher. Here we demonstrate a novel and simple drop-casting procedure …
We numerically investigate the effect of magnetic and electrical damages at the edge of a perpendicular magnetic random access memory (MRAM) cell on the spin-transfer-torque (STT) efficiency that is defined by the ratio of thermal stability factor to switching current. We find that the switching mode of an edge-damaged cell is different from that of an undamaged cell, which results in a sizable reduction in the switching current. Together with a marginal reduction of the thermal stability factor of an edge-damaged cell, this feature makes the STT efficiency large. Our results suggest that a pr…
Despite the crucial role of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co(Fe)/MgO based magnetic tunnel junction, the underlying mechanism is still being debated. Here, we report an anatomical study of oxygen and Mg effect on Pt/Co bilayers through repeated in-situ anomalous Hall effect measurements, controlled oxygen exposure and Mg deposition in an ultrahigh vacuum system. We found that chemisorbed oxygen not only quenches the effective magnetic moment of the Co surface layer, but also softens its magnetic anisotropy. However, a subsequent Mg dusting on the oxygen pre-exposed Pt/Co sur…
In this work we have shown bulk superconductivity and studied the anisotropy in both the normal and superconducting states in quasi-1D conductor Nb2Se3. Electron - electron Umklapp scattering dominates electronic transport along the direction of Nb metal chains as well as perpendicular to it. The superconducting state is rather anisotropic with possible multi - band features.
Current-induced domain-wall motion with velocity spanning over five orders of magnitude up to 22 m/s has been observed by magneto-optical Kerr effect in (Ga,Mn)As with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The data are employed to verify theories of spin-transfer by the Slonczewski-like mechanism as well as by the torque resulting from spin-flip transitions in the domain-wall region. Evidence for domain-wall creep at low currents is found.
Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are expected to play a key role in the next generation of current and electric field switched memory and logic devices. In this study we use Kerr microscopy alongside electrical transport measurement to gain insight into the underlying switching mechanisms of such devices. We find switching to be a stochastic, domain wall driven process, the speed of which is strongly dependent on the switching current. Kerr imaging shows domain nucleation at the edge of the device which modelling reveals is likely assisted by the perpendicular comp…
We have investigated the effects of post growth low temperature annealing on the magnetic, electrical and structural properties of (Ga_0.94,Mn_0.06)(As_0.9,P_0.1) layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. By controlling the annealing time we are able to tune the magnetic anisotropy between an easy axis in the plane for the as-grown samples, to an easy axis perpendicular to the plane for fully annealed samples. The increase of the carrier density, as a result of annealing, is found to be the primary reason for the change in magnetic anisotropy, in qualitative agreement with theoretical prediction…
The magnetic properties of iron (spin and orbital magnetic moments, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy) in various geometries and dimensionalities are investigated by using a parametrized tight-binding model in an $s$, $p$ and $d$ atomic orbital basis set including spin polarization and the effect of spin-orbit coupling. The validity of this model is well established by comparing the results with those obtained by using an ab-initio code. This model is applied to the study of iron in bulk bcc and fcc phases, $(110)$ and $(001)$ surfaces and to the monatomic wire, at several interatomic dista…
Perpendicular MgO-based Magnetic Tunnel Junctions are optimal candidates as building block of Spin Transfer Torque (STT) magnetoresistive memories. However, up to now, the only STT is not enough to achieve switching current density below 106 A/cm2. A recent work [Wang et al., Nature Mater., vol. 11, pp 64-68, Jan. 2012] has experimentally demonstrated the possibility to perform magnetization switching assisted by an electric-field at ultra-low current density. Theoretically, this switching has been studied by using a macrospin approach only. Here, we show a full micromagnetic study. We found t…
We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic, electrical and structural properties of Ga0.94Mn0.06As1-yPy layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates for y less than or equal to 0.3. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the layers are under tensile strain which gives rise to a magnetic easy axis perpendicular to the plane of the layers. The strength of the magnetic anisotropy and the coercive field increase as the phosphorous concentration is increased. The resistivity of all samples shows metallic behaviour with the resistivity increasing as y increases. These …
Moiré structures in small-angle-twisted bilayers of two-dimensional semiconductors with a broken-symmetry interface form arrays of ferroelectric domains with periodically alternating out-of-plane polarization. Here, we propose a network theory for the tunability of such FE domain structure by applying an electric field perpendicular to the 2D crystal. Using multiscale analysis, we derive a fully parametrized string-theory-like description of the domain wall network and show that it undergoes a qualitative change, after the arcs of partial dislocation like domain walls merge (near the network n…
This paper focuses on accelerated aging methods for magnet wire. Reliability of electrical devices such as coils, motors, relays, solenoids and transformers is heavily dependent on the Electrical Insulation System (EIS). Accelerated aging methods are used to rapidly simulate the conditions in real life, which is typically years (20,000 hours) depending on the operating conditions. The purpose of accelerated aging is to bring lifetime of an EIS to hours, days or weeks. Shortening the lifetime of an EIS to such an extent, allows for the study of the insulation materials behavior as well as inves…
