In a recent work \cite{BG}, given a collection of continuous semimartingales, authors derive a semimartingale decomposition from the corresponding ranked processes in the case that the ranked processes can meet more than two original processes at the same time. This has led to a more general decomposition of ranked processes. In this paper, we derive a more general result for semimartingales (not necessarily continuous) using a simpler approach. Furthermore, we also give a generalization of Ouknine \cite{O1, O2} and Yan's \cite{Y1} formula for local times of ranked processes
This paper presents the asymptotic theory for nondegenerate $U$-statistics of high frequency observations of continuous Itô semimartingales. We prove uniform convergence in probability and show a functional stable central limit theorem for the standardized version of the $U$-statistic. The limiting process in the central limit theorem turns out to be conditionally Gaussian with mean zero. Finally, we indicate potential statistical applications of our probabilistic results.
The estimation of local characteristics of Ito semimartingales has received a great deal of attention in both academia and industry over the past decades. In various papers limit theorems were derived for functionals of increments and ranges in the infill asymptotics setting. In this paper we establish the asymptotic theory for a wide class of statistics that are built from the incremental process of an Ito semimartingale. More specifically, we will show the law of large numbers and the associated stable central limit theorem for the path dependent functionals in the continuous and discontinuo…
The typical central limit theorems in high-frequency asymptotics for semimartingales are results on stable convergence to a mixed normal limit with an unknown conditional variance. Estimating this conditional variance usually is a hard task, in particular when the underlying process contains jumps. For this reason, several authors have recently discussed methods to automatically estimate the conditional variance, i.e. they build a consistent estimator from the original statistics, but computed at various different time scales. Their methods work in several situations, but are essentially restr…
We consider the moderate deviations behaviors for two (co-) volatility estima-tors: generalised bipower variation, Hayashi-Yoshida estimator. The results are obtained by using a new result about the moderate deviations principle for m-dependent random variables based on the Chen-Ledoux type condition. In the last decade there has been a considerable development of the asymptotic theory for processes observed at a high frequency. This was mainly motivated by financial applications , where the data, such as stock prices or currencies, are observed very frequently. As under the no-arbitrage assum…
This paper proposes novel tests for the absence of jumps in a univariate semimartingale and for the absence of common jumps in a bivariate semimartingale. Our methods rely on ratio statistics of power variations based on irregular observations, sampled at different frequencies. We develop central limit theorems for the statistics under the respective null hypotheses and apply bootstrap procedures to assess the limiting distributions. Further we define corrected statistics to improve the finite sample performance. Simulations show that the test based on our corrected statistic yields good resul…
We present an elementary treatment of the Optional Decomposition Theorem for continuous semimartingales and general filtrations. This treatment does not assume the existence of equivalent local martingale measure(s), only that of strictly positive local martingale deflator(s).
In this note we prove that the local martingale part of a convex function f of a d-dimensional semimartingale X = M + A can be written in terms of an It^o stochastic integral \int H(X)dM, where H(x) is some particular measurable choice of subgradient of f at x, and M is the martingale part of X. This result was first proved by Bouleau in [2]. Here we present a new treatment of the problem. We first prove the result for X' = X + eB, e > 0, where B is a standard Brownian motion, and then pass to the limit as e tends to 0, using results in [1] and [4].
This paper gives a complete characterization of infinitely divisible semimartingales, i.e., semimartingales whose finite dimensional distributions are infinitely divisible. An explicit and essentially unique decomposition of such semimartingales is obtained. A new approach, combining series decompositions of infinitely divisible processes with detailed analysis of their jumps, is presented. As an ilustration of the main result, the semimartingale property is explicitely determined for a large class of stationary increment processes and several examples of processes of interest are considered. …
In applications the properties of a stochastic feature often change gradually rather than abruptly, that is: after a constant phase for some time they slowly start to vary. In this paper we discuss statistical inference for the detection and the localisation of gradual changes in the jump characteristic of a discretely observed Ito semimartingale. We propose a new measure of time variation for the jump behaviour of the process. The statistical uncertainty of a corresponding estimate is analyzed by deriving new results on the weak convergence of a sequential empirical tail integral process and …
In this paper we examine the asymptotic theory for U-statistics and V-statistics of discontinuous Ito semimartingales that are observed at high frequency. For different types of kernel functions we show laws of large numbers and associated stable central limit theorems. In most of the cases the limiting process will be conditionally centered Gaussian. The structure of the kernel function determines whether the jump and/or the continuous part of the semimartingale contribute to the limit.
A new integral with respect to an integer-valued random measure is introduced. In contrast to the finite variation integral ubiquitous in semimartingale theory (Jacod and Shiryaev, 2003, II.1.5), the new integral is closed under stochastic integration, composition, and smooth transformations. The new integral gives rise to a previously unstudied class of pure-jump processes: the sigma-locally finite variation pure-jump processes. As an application, it is shown that every semimartingale $X$ has a unique decomposition $$X = X_0 + X^{\mathrm{qc}}+X^{\mathrm{dp}},$$ where $X^{\mathrm{qc}}$ is quas…
We consider decompositions of processes of the form $Y=f(t,X_t)$ where $X$ is a semimartingale. The function $f$ is not required to be differentiable, so Itô's lemma does not apply. In the case where $f(t,x)$ is independent of $t$, it is shown that requiring $f$ to be locally Lipschitz continuous in $x$ is enough for an Itô-style decomposition to exist. In particular, $Y$ will be a Dirichlet process. We also look at the case where $f(t,x)$ can depend on $t$, possibly discontinuously. It is shown, under some additional mild constraints on $f$, that the same decomposition still holds. Both these…
This paper presents new results on the Edgeworth expansion for high frequency functionals of continuous diffusion processes. We derive asymptotic expansions for weighted functionals of the Brownian motion and apply them to provide the second order Edgeworth expansion for power variation of diffusion processes. Our methodology relies on martingale embedding, Malliavin calculus and stable central limit theorems for semimartingales. Finally, we demonstrate the density expansion for studentized statistics of power variations.
In this paper, we provide non-parametric statistical tools to test stationarity of microstructure noise in general hidden Ito semimartingales, and discuss how to measure liquidity risk using high frequency financial data. In particular, we investigate the impact of non-stationary microstructure noise on some volatility estimators, and design three complementary tests by exploiting edge effects, information aggregation of local estimates and high-frequency asymptotic approximation. The asymptotic distributions of these tests are available under both stationary and non-stationary assumptions, th…
When expanding a filtration with a stochastic process it is easily possible for semimartingale no longer to remain semimartingales in the enlarged filtration. Y. Kchia and P. Protter indicated a way to avoid this pitfall in 2015, but they were unable to give the semimartingale decomposition in the enlarged filtration except for special cases. We provide a way to compute such a decomposition, and moreover we provide a sufficient condition for Itô processes to remain Itô processes in the enlarged filtration. This has significance in applications to Mathematical Finance.
Given a finite honest time, we first show that the associated Azéma optional supermartingale can be expressed as the drawdown and the relative drawdown of some local optional supermartingales with continuous running supremum. The relative drawdown representation then allows us to provide a characterisation of finite honest times using a family of non-negative local optional supermartingales with continuous running supremum which converges to zero at infinity. Then we extend the notion of semimartingales of class-$(Σ)$ by allowing for jumps in its finite variation part of the semimartingale dec…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of sums of functions of the increments of a given semimartingale, taken along a regular grid whose mesh goes to 0. The function of the $i$th increment may depend on the current time, and also on the past of the semimartingale before this time. We study the convergence in probability of two types of such sums, and we also give associated central limit theorems. This extends known results when the summands are a function depending only on the increments, and this is motivated mainly by statistical applications.
Stochastic integrals are defined with respect to a collection $P = (P_i; \, i \in I)$ of continuous semimartingales, imposing no assumptions on the index set $I$ and the subspace of $\mathbb{R}^I$ where $P$ takes values. The integrals are constructed though finite-dimensional approximation, identifying the appropriate local geometry that allows extension to infinite dimensions. For local martingale integrators, the resulting space $\mathsf{S} (P)$ of stochastic integrals has an operational characterisation via a corresponding set of integrands $\mathsf{R} (C)$, constructed with only reference …
Stricker's theorem states that a Gaussian process is a semimartingale in its natural filtration if and only if it is the sum of an independent increment Gaussian process and a Gaussian process of finite variation, see [1983, Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete 64(3)]. We consider extensions of this result to non Gaussian infinitely divisible processes. First we show that the class of infinitely divisible semimartingales is so large that the natural analog of Stricker's theorem fails to hold. Then, as the main result, we prove that an infinitely divisible semimartingale relative to the filtration generat…
This paper develops a robust dynamic mode decomposition (RDMD) method endowed with statistical and numerical robustness. Statistical robustness ensures estimation efficiency at the Gaussian and non-Gaussian probability distributions, including heavy-tailed distributions. The proposed RDMD is statistically robust because the outliers in the data set are flagged via projection statistics and suppressed using a Schweppe-type Huber generalized maximum-likelihood estimator that minimizes a convex Huber cost function. The latter is solved using the iteratively reweighted least-squares algorithm that…
We develop a novel continuous-time asymptotic framework for inference on whether the predictive ability of a given forecast model remains stable over time. We formally define forecast instability from the economic forecaster's perspective and highlight that the time duration of the instability bears no relationship with stable period. Our approach is applicable in forecasting environment involving low-frequency as well as high-frequency macroeconomic and financial variables. As the sampling interval between observations shrinks to zero the sequence of forecast losses is approximated by a conti…
In this paper we explain how the notion of ''weak Dirichlet process'' is the suitable generalization of the one of semimartingale with jumps. For such a process we provide a unique decomposition which is new also for semimartingales: in particular we introduce ''characteristics'' for weak Dirichlet processes. We also introduce a weak concept (in law) of finite quadratic variation. We investigate a set of new useful chain rules and we discuss a general framework of (possibly path-dependent with jumps) martingale problems with a set of examples of SDEs with jumps driven by a distributional drift…
The martingale part in the semimartingale decomposition of a Brownian motion with respect to an enlargement of its filtration, is an anticipative mapping of the given Brownian motion. In analogy to optimal transport theory, we define causal transport plans in the context of enlargement of filtrations, as the Kantorovich counterparts of the aforementioned non-adapted mappings. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a Brownian motion to remain a semimartingale in an enlarged filtration, in terms of certain minimization problems over sets of causal transport plans. The latter are als…
Given a reference filtration $\mathbb{F}$, we develop in this work a generic method for computing the semimartingale decomposition of $\mathbb{F}$-martingales in some specific enlargements of $\mathbb{F}$. This method is then applied to the study of progressive enlargement with multiple non-ordered random times, for which explicit decompositions can be obtained under the absolute continuity condition of Jacod.
The paper studies thin times which are random times whose graph is contained in a countable union of the graphs of stopping times with respect to a reference filtration $\mathbb F$. We show that a generic random time can be decomposed into thin and thick parts, where the second is a random time avoiding all $\mathbb F$-stopping times. Then, for a given random time $τ$, we introduce ${\mathbb F}^τ$, the smallest right-continuous filtration containing $\mathbb F$ and making $τ$ a stopping time, and we show that, for a thin time $τ$, each $\mathbb F$-martingale is an ${\mathbb F}^τ$-semimartingal…
We deal with various alternative decompositions of F-martingales with respect to the filtration G which represents the enlargement of a filtration F by a progressive flow of observations of a random time that either belongs to the class of pseudo-honest times or satisfies the extended density hypothesis. Several related results from the existing literature are essentially extended. Results on G-semimartingale decompositions of F-local martingales are crucial for applications in financial mathematics, most notably in the context of modeling credit risk and the study of insider trading where the…
In this work, we establish pathwise functional Itô formulas for non-smooth functionals of real-valued continuous semimartingales. Under finite $(p,q)$-variation regularity assumptions in the sense of two-dimensional Young integration theory, we establish a pathwise local-time decomposition $$F_t(X_t) = F_0(X_0)+ \int_0^t\nabla^hF_s(X_s)ds + \int_0^t\nabla^wF_s(X_s)dX(s) - \frac{1}{2}\int_{-\infty}^{+\infty}\int_0^t(\nabla^w_xF_s)(^{x}X_s)d_{(s,x)}\ell^x(s).$$ Here, $X_t= \{X(s); 0\le s\le t\}$ is the continuous semimartingale path up to time $t\in [0,T]$, $\nabla^h$ is the horizontal derivativ…
We proof a limit theorem for moments in space of the increments of Brownian local time. As special cases for the second and third moments, previous results by Chen et al. (Ann. Prob. 38, 2010, no. 1) and Rosen (Stoch. Dyn. 11, 2011, no. 1), which were later reproven by Hu and Nualart (Electron. Commun. Probab. 14, 2009; Electron. Commun. Probab. 15, 2010) and Rosen (Séminaire de Probabilités XLIII, Springer, 2011) are included. Furthermore, a conjecture of Rosen for the fourth moment is settled. In comparison to the previous methods of proof, we follow a fundamentally different approach by exc…
This paper develops methods to study the distribution of Eulerian statistics defined by second-order recurrence relations. We define a random process to decompose the statistics over compositions of integers. It is shown that the numbers of descents in random involutions and in random derangements are asymptotically normal with rates of convergence $\mathcal{O}(n^{-1/2})$ and $\mathcal{O}(n^{-1/3})$ respectively.
We herein develop a theory of contiguity in the quantum domain based upon a novel quantum analogue of the Lebesgue decomposition. The theory thus formulated is pertinent to the weak quantum local asymptotic normality introduced in the previous paper [Yamagata, Fujiwara, and Gill, \textit{Ann. Statist.}, \textbf{41} (2013) 2197-2217.], yielding substantial enlargement of the scope of quantum statistics.
Let $\mathbb{F}\subset \mathbb{G}$ be two filtrations and $S$ be a $\mathbb{F}$ semimartingale possessing a $\mathbb{F}$ local martingale deflator. Consider $τ$ a $\mathbb{G}$ stopping time. We study the problem whether $S^{τ-}$ or $S^τ$ can have $\mathbb{G}$ local martingale deflators. A suitable theoretical framework is set up in this paper, within which necessary/sufficient conditions for the problem to be solved have been proved. Under these conditions, we will construct $\mathbb{G}$ local martingale deflators for $S^{τ-}$ or for $S^τ$. Among others, it is proved that $\mathbb{G}$ local ma…
