We consider decompositions of processes of the form $Y=f(t,X_t)$ where $X$ is a semimartingale. The function $f$ is not required to be differentiable, so Itô's lemma does not apply. In the case where $f(t,x)$ is independent of $t$, it is shown that requiring $f$ to be locally Lipschitz continuous in $x$ is enough for an Itô-style decomposition to exist. In particular, $Y$ will be a Dirichlet process. We also look at the case where $f(t,x)$ can depend on $t$, possibly discontinuously. It is shown, under some additional mild constraints on $f$, that the same decomposition still holds. Both these results follow as special cases of a more general decomposition which we prove, and which applies to nondifferentiable functions of Dirichlet processes. Possible applications of these results to the theory of one-dimensional diffusions are briefly discussed.
The paper concerns itself with establishing large deviation principles for a sequence of stochastic integrals and stochastic differential equations driven by general semimartingales in infinite-dimensional settings. The class of semimartingales considered is broad enough to cover Banach space-valued semimartingales and the martingale random measures. Simple usable expressions for the associated rate functions are given in this abstract setup. As illustrated through several concrete examples, the results presented here provide a new systematic approach to the study of large deviation principles…
This paper gives a complete characterization of infinitely divisible semimartingales, i.e., semimartingales whose finite dimensional distributions are infinitely divisible. An explicit and essentially unique decomposition of such semimartingales is obtained. A new approach, combining series decompositions of infinitely divisible processes with detailed analysis of their jumps, is presented. As an ilustration of the main result, the semimartingale property is explicitely determined for a large class of stationary increment processes and several examples of processes of interest are considered. …
In this note we prove that the local martingale part of a convex function f of a d-dimensional semimartingale X = M + A can be written in terms of an It^o stochastic integral \int H(X)dM, where H(x) is some particular measurable choice of subgradient of f at x, and M is the martingale part of X. This result was first proved by Bouleau in [2]. Here we present a new treatment of the problem. We first prove the result for X' = X + eB, e > 0, where B is a standard Brownian motion, and then pass to the limit as e tends to 0, using results in [1] and [4].
Let $\mathbb{\hat{E}}$ be the upper expectation of a weakly compact but non-dominated family $\mathcal{P}$ of probability measures. Assume that $Y$ is a $d$-dimensional $\mathcal{P}$-semimartingale under $\mathbb{\hat{E}}$. Given an open set $Q\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$, the exit time of $Y$ from $Q$ is defined by \[ τ_{Q}:=\inf\{t\geq0:Y_{t}\in Q^{c}\}. \] The main objective of this paper is to study the quasi-continuity properties of $τ_{Q}$ under the nonlinear expectation $\mathbb{\hat{E}}$. Under some additional assumptions on the growth and regularity of $Y$, we prove that $τ_{Q}\wedge t$ is …
Let X and Y be an m-dimensional F-semimartingale and an n-dimensional H-semimartingale respectively on the same probability space, both enjoying the strong predictable representation property. We propose a martingale representation result under the probability measure P for the square integrable G-martingales, where G is the union of F and H. As a first application we identify the biggest possible value of the multiplicity in the sense of Davis and Varaiya of the union of F1,..., Fd, where, fixed i in (1,...,d), Fi is the reference filtration of a real martingale Mi, which enjoys the Fi-predic…
This paper studies the loss of the semimartingale property of the process $g(Y)$ at the time a one-dimensional diffusion $Y$ hits a level, where $g$ is a difference of two convex functions. We show that the process $g(Y)$ can fail to be a semimartingale in two ways only, which leads to a natural definition of non-semimartingales of the \textit{first} and \textit{second kind}. We give a deterministic if and only if condition (in terms of $g$ and the coefficients of $Y$) for $g(Y)$ to fall into one of the two classes of processes, which yields a characterisation for the loss of the semimartingal…
In this paper, we derive comparison results for terminal values of $d$-dimensional special semimartingales and also for finite-dimensional distributions of multivariate Lévy processes. The comparison is with respect to nondecreasing, (increasing) convex, (increasing) directionally convex and (increasing) supermodular functions. We use three different approaches. In the first approach, we give sufficient conditions on the local predictable characteristics that imply ordering of terminal values of semimartingales. This generalizes some recent convex comparison results of exponential models in [M…
In this work, we develop a novel principal component analysis (PCA) for semimartingales by introducing a suitable spectral analysis for the quadratic variation operator. Motivated by high-dimensional complex systems typically found in interest rate markets, we investigate correlation in high-dimensional high-frequency data generated by continuous semimartingales. In contrast to the traditional PCA methodology, the directions of large variations are not deterministic, but rather they are bounded variation adapted processes which maximize quadratic variation almost surely. This allows us to redu…
We delve deeper into the study of semimartingale attractors that we recently introduced in Allouba and Langa \cite{AL0}. In this article we focus on second order SPDEs of the Allen-Cahn type. After proving existence, uniqueness, and detailed regularity results for our SPDEs and a corresponding random PDE of Allen-Cahn type, we prove the existence of semimartingale global attractors for these equations. We also give some results on the finite dimensional asymptotic behavior of the solutions. In particular, we show the finite fractal dimension of this random attractor and give a result on determ…
The paper deals with convergence of solutions of a class of stochastic differential equations driven by infinite-dimensional semimartingales. The infinite-dimensional semimartingales considered in the paper are Hilbert-space valued. The theorems presented generalize the convergence result obtained by Wong and Zakai for stochastic differential equations driven by linear interpolations of a finite-dimensional Brownian motion. In particular, a general form of the correction factor is derived. Examples are given illustrating the use of the theorems to obtain other kinds of approximation results.
A well-known Itô formula for finite dimensional processes, given in terms of stochastic integrals with respect to Wiener processes and Poisson random measures, is revisited and is revised. The revised formula, which corresponds to the classical Itô formula for semimartingales with jumps, is then used to obtain a generalisation of an important infinite dimensional Itô formula for continuous semimartingales proved by Krylov to a class of $L_p$-valued jump processes. This generalisation is motivated by applications in the theory of stochastic PDEs.
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for a class of semilinear stochastic evolution equations driven by general Hilbert space-valued semimartingales, with drift equal to the sum of a linear maximal monotone operator in variational form and of the superposition operator associated to a random time-dependent monotone function defined on the whole real line. Such a function is only assumed to satisfy a very mild symmetry-like condition, but its rate of growth towards infinity can be arbitrary. Moreover, the noise is of multiplicative type and can be path-dependent. The solution i…
In this paper we study time-inhomogeneous affine processes beyond the common assumption of stochastic continuity. In this setting times of jumps can be both inaccessible and predictable. To this end we develop a general theory of finite dimensional affine semimartingales under very weak assumptions. We show that the corresponding semimartingale characteristics have affine form and that the conditional characteristic function can be represented with solutions to measure differential equations of Riccati type. We prove existence of affine Markov processes and affine semimartingales under mild co…
In this note, we study the infinite-dimensional conditional laws of Brownian semistationary processes. Motivated by the fact that these processes are typically not semimartingales, we present sufficient conditions ensuring that a Brownian semistationary process has conditional full support, a property introduced by Guasoni, Rásonyi, and Schachermayer [Ann. Appl. Probab., 18 (2008) pp. 491--520]. By the results of Guasoni, Rásonyi, and Schachermayer, this property has two important implications. It ensures, firstly, that the process admits no free lunches under proportional transaction costs, a…
In this article we introduce the Gaussian Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(\mathscr O,γ)$, where $\mathscr O$ is an arbitrary open set of a separable Banach space $E$ endowed with a nondegenerate centered Gaussian measure $γ$. Moreover, we investigate the semimartingale structure of the infinite dimensional reflecting Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process for open sets of the form $\mathscr O=\{x\in E\, :\, G(x)<0\}$, where $ G$ is some Borel function on $E$.
We consider the moderate deviations behaviors for two (co-) volatility estima-tors: generalised bipower variation, Hayashi-Yoshida estimator. The results are obtained by using a new result about the moderate deviations principle for m-dependent random variables based on the Chen-Ledoux type condition. In the last decade there has been a considerable development of the asymptotic theory for processes observed at a high frequency. This was mainly motivated by financial applications , where the data, such as stock prices or currencies, are observed very frequently. As under the no-arbitrage assum…
Introducing certain singularities, we generalize the class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations with so-called generalized drift. Equations with generalized drift, well-known in the literature, possess a drift that is described by the semimartingale local time of the unknown process integrated with respect to a locally finite signed measure ν. The generalization which we deal with can be interpreted as allowing more general set functions ν, for example signed measures which are only σ-finite. However, we use a different approach to describe the singular drift. For the considere…
In this paper we aim at generalizing the results of A. K. Zvonkin and A. Y. Veretennikov on the construction of unique strong solutions of stochastic differential equations with singular drift vector field and additive noise in the Euclidean space to the case of infinite-dimensional state spaces. The regularizing driving noise in our equation is chosen to be a locally non-Hölder continuous Hilbert space valued process of fractal nature, which does not allow for the use of classical construction techniques for strong solutions from PDE or semimartingale theory. Our approach, which does not reso…
In this paper we discuss existence and uniqueness for a one-dimensional time inhomogeneous stochastic differential equation directed by an $\mathbb{F}$-semimartingale $M$ and a finite cubic variation process $ξ$ which has the structure $Q+R$, where $Q$ is a finite quadratic variation process and $R$ is strongly predictable in some technical sense: that condition implies, in particular, that $R$ is weak Dirichlet, and it is fulfilled, for instance, when $R$ is independent of $M$. The method is based on a transformation which reduces the diffusion coefficient multiplying $ξ$ to 1. We use general…
This paper discusses a new notion of quadratic variation and covariation for Banach space valued processes (not necessarily semimartingales) and related Itô formula. If $\X$ and $\Y$ take respectively values in Banach spaces $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$ and $χ$ is a suitable subspace of the dual of the projective tensor product of $B_{1}$ and $B_{2}$ (denoted by $(B_{1}\hat{\otimes}_πB_{2})^{\ast}$), we define the so-called $χ$-covariation of $\X$ and $\Y$. If $\X=\Y$, the $χ$-covariation is called $χ$-quadratic variation. The notion of $χ$-quadratic variation is a natural generalization of the one int…
We introduce a variational theory for processes adapted to the multi-dimensional Brownian motion filtration that provides a differential structure allowing to describe infinitesimal evolution of Wiener functionals at very small scales. The main novel idea is to compute the "sensitivities" of processes, namely derivatives of martingale components and a weak notion of infinitesimal generators, via a finite-dimensional approximation procedure based on controlled inter-arrival times and approximating martingales. The theory comes with convergence results that allow to interpret a large class of Wi…
We treat the class of universal Markov processes on the d-dimensional Euklidean space which do not depend on random. For these, as well as for several subclasses, we prove criteria whether a function f, defined on the positive half-line, can be a path of a process in the respective class. This is useful in particular in the construction of (counter-)examples. Furthermore we characterize the processes of this kind, which are homogeneous in space and time. The semimartingale property is characterized in terms of the jumps of a one-dimensional deterministic Markov process. We emphasize the differ…
We introduce a general algorithm for the computation of the scale functions of a spectrally negative Lévy process $X$, based on a natural weak approximation of $X$ via upwards skip-free continuous-time Markov chains with stationary independent increments. The algorithm consists of evaluating a finite linear recursion with its (nonnegative) coefficients given explicitly in terms of the Lévy triplet of $X$. Thus it is easy to implement and numerically stable. Our main result establishes sharp rates of convergence of this algorithm providing an explicit link between the semimartingale characteris…
This paper provides full classification of dynamics for continuous time Markov chains (CTMCs) on the non-negative integers with polynomial transition rate functions. Such stochastic processes are abundant in applications, in particular in biology. More precisely, for CTMCs of bounded jumps, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of calculable parameters for explosivity, recurrence vs transience, certain absorption, positive recurrence vs null recurrence, and implosivity. Simple sufficient conditions for exponential ergodicity of stationary distributions and quasi-stationary di…
We consider a diffusion process with coefficients that are periodic outside of an "interface region" of finite thickness. The question investigated in this article is the limiting long time/large scale behavior of such a process under diffusive rescaling. It is clear that outside of the interface, the limiting process must behave like Brownian motion, with diffusion matrices given by the standard theory of homogenization. The interesting behavior therefore occurs on the interface. Our main result is that the limiting process is a semimartingale whose bounded variation part is proportional to t…
We introduce a variational theory for processes adapted to the multi-dimensional Brownian motion filtration. The theory provides a differential structure which describes the infinitesimal evolution of Wiener functionals at very small scales. The Markov property is replaced by a finite-dimensional approximation procedure based on controlled inter-arrival times and jumps of approximating martingales. The theory reveals that a large class of adapted processes follow a differential rule which is similar in nature to a fundamental theorem of calculus in the context of Wiener functionals. Null stoch…
In this paper we study the Föllmer-Schweizer decomposition of a square integrable random variable $ξ$ with respect to a given semimartingale $S$ under restricted information. Thanks to the relationship between this decomposition and that of the projection of $ξ$ with respect to the given information flow, we characterize the integrand appearing in the Föllmer-Schweizer decomposition under partial information in the general case where $ξ$ is not necessarily adapted to the available information level. For partially observable Markovian models where the dynamics of $S$ depends on an unobservable …
For a class of stochastic differential equations with reflection for which a certain ${\mathbb{L}}^p$ continuity condition holds with $p>1$, it is shown that any weak solution that is a strong Markov process can be decomposed into the sum of a local martingale and a continuous, adapted process of zero $p$-variation. When $p=2$, this implies that the reflected diffusion is a Dirichlet process. Two examples are provided to motivate such a characterization. The first example is a class of multidimensional reflected diffusions in polyhedral conical domains that arise as approximations of certain s…
We consider the following problem in stochastic portfolio theory. Are there portfolios that are relative arbitrages with respect to the market portfolio over very short periods of time under realistic assumptions? We answer a slightly relaxed question affirmative in the following high dimensional sense, where dimension refers to the number of stocks being traded. Very roughly, suppose that for every dimension we have a continuous semimartingale market such that (i) the vector of market weights in decreasing order has a stationary regularly varying tail with an index between $-1$ and $-1/2$ and…
