The imbalanced superfluid state of spin-1/2 fermions with s-wave pairing is numerically studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation at zero temperature in an annular disk geometry with narrow radial width. Two distinct types of systems are considered. The first case may be relevant to heavy fermion superconductors, where magnetic field causes spin imbalance via Zeeman interaction and the system is studied in a grand canonical ensemble. As the magnetic field increases, the system is transformed from the uniform superfluid state to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, and finally to the spin polarized normal state. The second case may be relevant to cold fermionic systems, where the numbers of fermions of each species are fixed as in a canonical ensemble. In this case, the groundstate depends on the pairing strength. For weak pairing, the order parameter exhibits a periodic domain wall lattice pattern with a localized spin distribution at low spin imbalance, and a sinusoidally modulated pattern with extended spin distribution at high spin imbalance. For strong pairing, the phase separation between superfluid state and polarized normal state is found to be more preferable, while the increase of spin imbalance simply changes the ratio between them.
We study the angular Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, in which the rotation symmetry is spontaneously broken, in population imbalanced fermion gases. The superfluid gases at near T=0 are investigated on the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation. We find that the angular FFLO state is stabilized in the gases confined in the toroidal trap, but not in the harmonic trap. We discuss the mechanism of the angular FFLO state based on the self-one-dimensionalization of the superfluid gas.
We study the zero temperature phase diagram of an imbalanced bilayer of dipolar fermions. We consider perpendicularly aligned identical dipoles in two layers and investigate the effect of population imbalance on the ground state phase at different layer spacings and average densities. The attractive part of the interlayer interaction could lead to the BEC-BCS crossover and the Fermi surface mismatch between two layers results in interesting uniform and nonuniform superfluid phases, which we have investigated here using the BCS mean-field theory together with the superfluid-mass density criteri…
We study equal mass population imbalanced two-component atomic Fermi gas with unequal trap frequencies $(ω_{\uparrow} \neq ω_{\downarrow})$ at zero temperature using the local density approximation (LDA). We consider the strongly attracting Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit where polarized (gapless) superfluid is stable. The system exhibits shell structure: unpolarized SF$\to$polarized SF$\to$normal N. Compared to trap symmetric case, when the majority component is tightly confined the gapless superfluid shell grows in size leading to reduced threshold polarization to form polarized (gapl…
We study fermionic superfluidity in strongly anisotropic optical lattices with attractive interactions utilizing the cluster DMFT method, and focusing in particular on the role of non-local quantum fluctuations. We show that non-local quantum fluctuations impact the BCS superfluid transition dramatically. Moreover, we show that exotic superfluid states with delicate order parameter structure, such as the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase driven by spin population imbalance, can emerge even in the presence of such strong fluctuations.
Cold atoms experiments offer invaluable information on superfluid dynamics, including decay cascades of topological defects. While the cascade properties are well established for Bose systems, our understanding of their behavior in Fermi counterparts is very limited, in particular in spin-imbalanced systems, where superfluid (paired) and normal (unpaired) particles naturally coexist giving rise to complex spatial structure of the atomic cloud. Here we show, based on a newly developed microscopic approach, that the decay cascades of topological defects are dramatically modified by the spin-pola…
We obtain a phase diagram of the spin imbalanced Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice, which is known to feature a flat band in its single-particle spectrum. Using the BCS mean-field theory for multiband systems, we find a variety of superfluid phases with imbalance. In particular, we find four different types FFLO phases, i.e. superfluid phases with periodic spatial modulation. They differ by the magnitude and direction of the centre-of-mass momentum of Cooper pairs. We also see a large region of stable Sarma phase, where the density imbalance is associated with zero Cooper pair momentum. In the…
We investigate the properties of entanglement in one-dimensional fermionic lattices at the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid regime. By analyzing occupation probabilities, which are concepts closely related to FFLO and entanglement, we obtain approximate analytical expressions for the spin-flip processes at the FFLO regime. We also apply density matrix renormalization group calculations to obtain the exact ground-state entanglement of the system in superfluid and non-superfluid regimes. Our results reveal a breaking pairs avalanche appearing precisely at the FFLO-normal phase …
Cooper-pair formation in a system of imbalanced fermions leads to the well-studied Fulde-Ferrell or Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluid state. In the former case the system forms spontaneous phase gradients while in the latter case it forms a stripelike or a crystal-like density gradient. We show that in multicomponent imbalanced mixtures, the superfluid states can be very different from the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states. The system generates gradients in both densities and phases by forming three-dimensional vortex-antivortex lattices or lattices of linked vortex loops. The solutions shar…
We investigate the superfluid-to-normal zero temperature quantum phase transitions of asymmetric two-component Fermi gases as a function of the chemical potential imbalance $h$. The calculations are performed for homogeneous and trapped imbalanced systems. We concentrate at unitarity, characterized by a divergent interaction parameter $k_F a$, where most of the current experiments are realized. For homogeneous systems, we determine the critical chemical potential imbalance $h_c$ at which possible phase transitions occur. In the case of trapped gases, we show how $h_c$ can be consistently deter…
We investigate the superfluid properties of d-wave pairing symmetry within the Extended Hubbard Model (EHM) in a magnetic field. We analyze the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the order parameter. We find that in the two-dimensional case, the spatially homogeneous spin polarized superfluidity ($SC(P\neq0)$) is stable in the weak coupling limit, at T=0, as opposed to the s-wave pairing symmetry case in 2D. We construct the ground state phase diagrams both for fixed chemical potential ($μ$) and electron concentration ($n$). Furthermore, we obtain the temperature vs. magnetic field…
We explore novel features of a nonrelativistic fermionic superfluid in which the pairing interaction includes a contribution from the exchange of a dynamical bosonic mode. We show that the dynamical boson exchange (DBE), which causes a retarded pairing interaction and thus violates the Galilean invariance of the fermion sector, generically leads to a quantum reduction of the superfluid density and hence a nonzero normal fraction even at zero temperature. For spin-singlet pairing, the DBE also leads to a nonvanishing spin susceptibility at zero temperature, providing a mechanism for the coexist…
We study the attractive Hubbard model with spin imbalance on two lattices featuring a flat band: the Lieb and kagome lattices. We present mean-field phase diagrams featuring exotic superfluid phases, similar to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, whose stability is confirmed by dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The nature of the pairing is found to be richer than just the Fermi surface shift responsible for the usual FFLO state. The presence of a flat band allows for changes in the particle momentum distributions at null energy cost. This facilitates formation of nontrivial su…
We use the mean-field theory to analyze the ground-state phase diagrams of spin-orbit coupled mass-imbalanced Fermi gases throughout the BCS-BEC evolution, including both the population-balanced and -imbalanced systems. Our calculations show that the competition between the mass and population imbalance and the Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) gives rise to very rich phase diagrams, involving normal, superfluid and phase separated regions. In addition, we find quantum phase transitions between the topologically trivial gapped superfluid and the nontrivial gapless superfluid phases, openin…
We develop a low-energy model of a unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state. Because the underlying rotational and translational symmetries are broken spontaneously, this gapless superfluid is a smectic liquid crystal, that exhibits fluctuations that are qualitatively stronger than in a conventional superfluid, thus requiring a fully nonlinear description of its Goldstone modes. Consequently, at nonzero temperature the LO superfluid is an algebraic phase even in 3d. It exhibits half-integer vortex-dislocation defects, whose unbinding leads to transitions to a superfluid nematic and other p…
The zero-temperature phase diagrams of imbalanced fermions in 3D optical lattices are investigated to evaluate the validity of the Fermi-Hubbard model. It is found that depending on the filling factor, s-wave scattering strength and lattice potential, the system may fall into the normal($N$) phase, magnetized superfluid(SF$_M$) or phase separation of $N$ and BCS state. By tuning these parameters, the superfluidity could be favorable by enhanced effective couplings or suppressed by the increased band gap. The phase profiles in the presence of a harmonic trap are also investigated under LDA, whi…
In a Fermi superfluid increasing population imbalance leads initially to reduction of the transition temperature, then the appearance of modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, and finally the suppression of pairing itself. For interaction strength such that the `balanced' system has a normal state pseudogap, increasing imbalance reveals anomalous spectral behavior. At a fixed weak imbalance (small polarization) the stable homogeneous superfluid occurs only above a certain temperature. The density of states has a minimum at the Fermi level, then a weak peak {\it within the ga…
We investigate different physical properties of a spin imbalanced fermionic superfluid described by an attractive Hubbard model in presence of a harmonic trap. To characterize the ground state of such a system, we compute various correlation functions, such as pairing, density and current correlations To underscore the effect of the trap, we compute these quantities as a function of strength of the trapping potential. A distinguishing feature of a superfluid state with population imbalance, is the appearance of a phase with spatially modulating gap function, called the Fulde- Ferrell-Larkin-Ov…
The possibility of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in a population imbalanced Fermi gas with a vortex is proposed. Employing the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes formalism we self-consistently determine the superfluid order parameter and the particle number density in the presence of a vortex. We find that as increasing population imbalance, the superfluid order parameter spatially oscillates around the vortex core in the radial direction, indicating that the FFLO state becomes stable. We find that the radial FFLO states cover a wide region of the phase diagram in the weak-coupling regime …
The proof of the Luttinger theorem, which was originally given for a normal Fermi liquid with equal spin populations formally described by the exact many-body theory at zero temperature, is here extended to an approximate theory given in terms of a "conserving" approximation also with spin imbalanced populations. The need for this extended proof, whose underlying assumptions are here spelled out in detail, stems from the recent interest in superfluid trapped Fermi atoms with attractive inter-particle interaction, for which the difference between two spin populations can be made large enough th…
We study the interplay between the Hofstadter butterfly, strong interactions and Zeeman field within the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory in real space, and explore the ground states of the attractive single-band Hofstadter-Hubbard Hamiltonian on a square lattice, including the exotic possibility of imbalanced vector potentials. We find that the cooperation between the vector potential and superfluid order breaks the spatial symmetry of the system, and flourish stripe-ordered Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like superfluid and supersolid phases that can be distinguished and chara…
We study the superfluid properties of two-dimensional spin-population-imbalanced Fermi gases to explore the interplay between the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition and the possible instability towards the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state. By the mean-field approximation together with quantum fluctuations, we obtain phase diagrams as functions of temperature, chemical potential imbalance and binding energy. We find that the fluctuations change the mean-field phase diagram significantly. We also address possible effects of the phase separation and/or the anisotropic FF phase to the …
The two-dimensional spin-imbalanced Fermi gas subject to s-wave pairing and spin-orbit coupling is considered a promising platform for realizing a topological chiral-p-wave superfluid. In the BCS limit of s-wave pairing, i.e., when Cooper pairs are only weakly bound, the system enters the topological phase via a second-order transition driven by increasing the Zeeman spin-splitting energy. Stronger attractive two-particle interactions cause the system to undergo the BCS-BEC crossover, in the course of which the topological transition becomes first-order. As a result, topological and nontopolog…
We consider the problem of spin-triplet p-wave superfluid pairing with total spin projection $m_s=0$ in atomic Fermi gas across the Feshbach resonance. We allow for imbalanced populations and take into account the effects due to presence of a parabolic trapping potential. Within the mean-field approximation for the one- and two-channel pairing models we show that depending on the distance from the center of a trap at least two superfluid states will have the lowest energy. Superfluid shells which emerge in a trap may have two out of three angular components of the p-wave superfluid order param…
We study excitonic condensation in an electron-hole bilayer system with unequal layer densities at zero temperature. Using mean-field theory we solve the BCS gap equations numerically and investigate the effects of intra-layer interactions. We analyze the stability of the Sarma phase with $\bk,-\bk$ pairing by calculating the superfluid mass density and also by checking the compressibility matrix. We find that with bare Coulomb interactions the superfluid density is always positive in the Sarma phase, due to a peculiar momentum structure of the gap function originating from the singular behavi…
We show that in superfluids with fermionic imbalance and uniform ground state, there are stable solitons. These solutions are formed of radial density modulations resulting in nodal rings. We demonstrate that these solitons exhibit nontrivial soliton-soliton and soliton-vortex interactions and can form complicated bound states in the form of "soliton sacks". In a phase-modulating (Fulde-Ferrell) background, we find different solitonic states, in the form of stable vortex-antivortex pairs.
We present a numerical study of the one-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover of a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. The crossover is described by the Bose-Fermi resonance model in a real space representation. Our main interest is in the behavior of the pair correlations, which, in the BCS limit, are of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov type, while in the BEC limit, a superfluid of diatomic molecules forms that exhibits quasi-condensation at zero momentum. We use the density matrix renormalization group method to compute the phase diagram as a function of the detuning of the molecular level and the polari…
Polarons can serve as an ideal platform to identify few-body correlations in tackling complex many-body problems. In this work, we reveal various crystalline few-body correlations smoothly emergent from the mass-imbalanced Fermi polarons in two dimensions. A unified variational approach up to three particle-hole excitations allows us to extract the dominant dimer, trimer or tetramer correlation in a single framework. When the fermion-impurity mass ratio is beyond certain critical value, the Fermi polaron is found to undergo a smooth crossover, instead of a sharp transition, from the polaronic …
We show that Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) states with modulated superfluid order parameters have a considerably larger range of stability in a lattice than in the continuum. We obtain the phase diagram for the 3D cubic attractive Hubbard model with an unequal population of up and down fermions using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes fully self-consistent method. We find a strong modulation of the local polarization that should provide a distinct signature for detection of the LO phase. The shell structure in the presence of a trap generates singularities in the density at the phase boundaries and provide ad…
We study the superfluid behavior of a population imbalanced ultracold atomic Fermi gases with a short range attractive interaction in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, using a pairing fluctuation theory. We show that, besides widespread pseudogap phenomena and intermediate temperature superfluidity, the superfluid phase is readily destroyed except in a limited region of the parameter space. We find a new mechanism for pair hopping, assisted by the excessive majority fermions, in the presence of continuum-lattice mixing, which leads to an unusual constant BEC asymptote for $T_c$ that is i…
The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultra-cold atoms opens a completely new avenue for exploring new quantum matter. In experiments, the SOC is implemented simultaneously with a Zeeman field. Such spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases are predicted to support Majorana fermions with non-Abelian exchange statistics in one dimension (1D). However, as shown in recent theory and experiments for 1D spin-imbalanced Fermi gases, the Zeeman field can lead to the long-sought Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids with non-zero momentum Cooper pairings, in contrast …
Stable non-equilibrium Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a spin-imbalanced driven-dissipative Fermi gas loaded on a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice
Recent experiments on imbalanced fermion gases have proved the existence of a sharp interface between a superfluid and a normal phase. We show that, at the lowest experimental temperatures, a temperature difference between N and SF phase can appear as a consequence of the blocking of energy transfer across the interface. Such blocking is a consequence of the existence of a SF gap, which causes low-energy normal particles to be reflected from the N-SF interface. Our quantitative analysis is based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism, which allows us to give analytical expressions …
We study the ground state phase diagram of population balanced and imbalanced ultracold atomic Fermi gases with a short range attractive interaction throughout the crossover from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), in a two-dimensional optical lattice (2DOL) comprised of two lattice and one continuum dimensions. We find that the mixing of lattice and continuum dimensions, together with population imbalance, has an extraordinary effect on pairing and the superfluidity of atomic Fermi gases. In the balanced case, the superfluid ground state prevails the majority of the phase space. However,…
We use the self-consistent mean-field theory to analyze the effects of Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the ground-state phase diagram of population-imbalanced Fermi gases throughout the BCS-BEC evolution. We find that the SOC and population imbalance are counteracting, and that this competition tends to stabilize the uniform superfluid phase against the phase separation. However, we also show that the SOC stabilizes (destabilizes) the uniform superfluid phase against the normal phase for low (high) population imbalances. In addition, we find topological quantum phase transitions assoc…
