The density distributions of the two components of a trapped, ultracold Fermi gas with population imbalance reveal the effect of imbalance on superfluid pairing. We develop a path-integral derivation of the density, that takes into account both fluctuations beyond mean-field and effects of nonzero temperature. The calculated density profiles compare favorably to the measured density profiles, and illustrate the necessity to incorporate both quantum fluctuations and finite temperature effects. The temperature dependence of the density profiles, especially near the superfluid-normal interface, allows determining the temperature of the superfluid core in current experiments.
We investigate different physical properties of a spin imbalanced fermionic superfluid described by an attractive Hubbard model in presence of a harmonic trap. To characterize the ground state of such a system, we compute various correlation functions, such as pairing, density and current correlations To underscore the effect of the trap, we compute these quantities as a function of strength of the trapping potential. A distinguishing feature of a superfluid state with population imbalance, is the appearance of a phase with spatially modulating gap function, called the Fulde- Ferrell-Larkin-Ov…
The attractive Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved via the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the ground state phases of population imbalanced fermion mixtures in harmonically trapped two-dimensional optical lattices. In the low density limit the superfluid order parameter modulates in the radial direction towards the trap edges to accommodate the unpaired fermions that are pushed away from the trap center with a single peak in their density. However in the high density limit while the order parameter modulates in the radial direction towards the trap center for low imbalance, it also m…
We present a series of theoretical studies of the boundary between a superfluid and normal region in a partially polarized gas of strongly interacting fermions. We present mean-field estimates of the surface energy in this boundary as a function of temperature and scattering length. We discuss the structure of the domain wall, and use a previously introduced phenomonological model to study its influence on experimental observables. Our microscopic mean-field calculations are not consistent with the magnitude of the surface tension found from our phenomonological modelling of data from the Rice…
We study the transition to fermion pair superfluidity in a mixture of interacting bosonic and fermionic atoms. The fermion interaction induced by the bosons and the dynamical screening of the condensate phonons due to fermions are included using the nonperturbative Hamiltonian flow equations. We determine the bosonic spectrum near the transition towards phase separation and find that the superfluid transition temperature may be increased substantially due to phonon damping.
We study s-wave pairing of population imbalanced Fermi atoms in quasi two dimensions using a mean field theory. At zero temperature, we map out the phase diagram in the entire Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer-Bose Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover region by investigating the effect of weak atom tunneling between layers. We find that the superfluid phase stabilizes as one decreases the atom tunneling between layers. This allows one to control the superfluid-normal first order phase transition by tuning a single experimental parameter. Further, we find that a tunneling induced polarized su…
We present a theory for a lattice array of weakly coupled one-dimensional ultracold attractive Fermi gases (1D `tubes') with spin imbalance, where strong intratube quantum fluctuations invalidate mean field theory. We first construct an effective field theory, which treats spin-charge mixing exactly, based on the Bethe ansatz solution of the 1D single tube problem. We show that the 1D Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is a two-component Luttinger liquid, and its elementary excitations are fractional states carrying both charge and spin. We analyze the instability of the 1D FFLO stat…
We show that the Hubbard Hamiltonian with particle-assisted tunneling rates --recently proposed to model a fermionic mixture near a broad Feshbach resonance-- displays a ground state phase diagram with superfluid, insulating, and phase separated regimes. In the latter case, when the populations are balanced the two phases coexist in microscopic antiferromagnetic domains. Macroscopic phase segregation into a high-density superfluid of molecules, and a low-density Fermi liquid of single atoms appears in the density profile above a critical polarization p_c.
We use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the effects of rotation on the ground state phases of harmonically trapped Fermi gases, under the assumption that quantized vortices are not excited. We find that the rotation breaks Cooper pairs that are located near the trap edge, and that this leads to a phase separation between the nonrotating superfluid (fully paired) atoms located around the trap center and the rigidly rotating normal (nonpaired) atoms located towards the trap edge, with a coexistence (partially paired) region in between. Furthermore, we show that the superfluid phase …
We study the zero temperature ground state of a two-dimensional atomic Fermi gas with chemical potential and population imbalance in the mean-field approximation. All calculations are performed in terms of the two-body binding energy $ε_B$, whose variation allows to investigate the evolution from the BEC to the BCS regimes. By means of analytical and exact expressions we show that, similarly to what is found in three dimensions, at fixed chemical potentials, BCS is the ground state until the critical imbalance $h_c$ after which there is a first-order phase transition to the normal state. We fi…
We analyze the ground state phases of two-component ($σ\equiv \lbrace \uparrow, \downarrow \rbrace$) population- and mass-balanced ($N_\uparrow = N_\downarrow$ and $m_\uparrow = m_\downarrow$) but trap-imbalanced ($ω_\uparrow \ne ω_\downarrow$) fermion mixtures as a function of interaction strength from the weak attraction Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to the strong attraction Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit. In the BCS limit, we find that the unpolarized superfluid (UPS) fermions exist away from the central core of the trapping potentials, and are surrounded by partially polarized no…
We argue that, for the recent experiments with imbalanced fermion gases, a temperature difference may occur between the normal (N) and the gapped superfluid (SF) phase. Using the mean-field formalism, we study particle scattering off the N-SF interface from the deep BCS to the unitary regime. We show that the thermal conductivity across the interface drops exponentially fast with increasing $h/k_B T$, where $h$ is the chemical potential imbalance. This implies a blocking of thermal equilibration between the N and the SF phase. We also provide a possible mechanism for the creation of gap oscill…
We analyze the vortex core states of two-species (mass imbalanced) superfluid fermion mixtures as a function of two-body binding energy in two dimensions. In particular we solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a population balanced mixture of $^{6}$Li and $^{40}$K atoms at zero temperature. We find that the vortex core is mostly occupied by the light-mass ($^{6}$Li) fermions and that the core density of the heavy-mass ($^{40}$K) fermions is highly depleted. This is in contrast with the one-species (mass balanced) mixtures with balanced populations where an equal amount of density deplet…
We investigate the density profiles of a partially polarized trapped Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover region using mean field theory within the local density approximation. Within this approximation the gas is phase separated into concentric shells. We describe how the structure of these shells depends upon the polarization and the interaction strength. A Comparison with experiments yields insight into the possibility of a polarized superfluid phase.
We investigate the superfluid transition temperature of quasi-two-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases beyond the mean-field approximation, through the second-order (or induced) interaction effects. For a balanced Fermi system the transition temperature is suppressed by a factor $\approx 2.72$. For imbalanced Fermi systems, the polarization and transition temperature of the tricritical point are significantly reduced as the two-body binding energy $|ε_B|$ increases.
Supersaturated superfluid 3He-4He liquid mixture, separating into the 3He-concentrated c-phase and 3He-diluted d-phase, represents a unique possibility for studying macroscopic quantum nucleation and quantum phase-separation kinetics in binary mixtures at low temperatures down to absolute zero. One of possible heterogeneous mechanisms for the phase separation of supersaturated d-phase is associated with superfluidity of this phase and with a possible existence of quantized vortices playing a role of nucleation sites for the c-phase of liquid mixture. We analyze the growth dynamics of vortex co…
We investigate the harmonically trapped 2D fermionic systems with a effective spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic s-wave superfluidity under the local density approximation, and find that there is a critical value for Zeeman field. When the Zeeman field larger than the critical value, the topological superfluid phases emerge and coexist with the normal superfluid phase, topological phase separation, in the trapped region. Otherwise, the superfluid phase is topologically trivial.
We investigate the phase diagram of asymmetric two-component Fermi gases at zero temperature as a function of polarization and interaction strength. The equations of state of the uniform superfluid and normal phase are determined using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find three different mixed states, where the superfluid and the normal phase coexist in equilibrium, corresponding to phase separation between: (a) the polarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal gas, (b) the polarized superfluid and the partially polarized normal gas and (c) the unpolarized superfluid and the partiall…
A Kolmogorov-type cascade of Kelvin waves--the distortion waves on vortex lines--plays a key part in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures. We propose an efficient numeric scheme for simulating the Kelvin wave cascade on a single vortex line. The idea is likely to be generalizable for a full-scale simulation of different regimes of superfluid turbulence. With the new scheme, we are able to unambiguously resolve the cascade spectrum exponent, and thus to settle the controversy between recent simulations [1] and recently developed analytic theory [2]. We present a theoretical study of the collective excitations of a trapped imbalanced fermion gas at unitarity, when the system consists of a superfluid core and a normal outer shell. We formulate the relevant boundary conditions and treat the normal shell both hydrodynamically and collisionlessly. For an isotropic trap, we calculate the mode frequencies as a function of trap polarization. Out-of-phase modes with frequencies below the trapping frequency are obtained for the case of a hydrodynamic normal shell. For the collisionless case, we calculate the monopole mode frequencies, and find that…
Recent experiments on imbalanced fermion gases have proved the existence of a sharp interface between a superfluid and a normal phase. We show that, at the lowest experimental temperatures, a temperature difference between N and SF phase can appear as a consequence of the blocking of energy transfer across the interface. Such blocking is a consequence of the existence of a SF gap, which causes low-energy normal particles to be reflected from the N-SF interface. Our quantitative analysis is based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism, which allows us to give analytical expressions …
We compute the phase diagram of strongly interacting fermions in one dimension at finite temperature, with mass and spin imbalance. By including the possibility of the existence of a spatially inhomogeneous ground state, we find regions where spatially varying superfluid phases are favored over homogeneous phases. We obtain estimates for critical values of the temperature, mass and spin imbalance, above which these phases disappear. Finally, we show that an intriguing relation exists between the general structure of the phase diagram and the binding energies of the underlying two-body bound-st…
An energetic electron passing through liquid helium causes ionization along its track. The ionized electrons quickly recombine with the resulting positive ions, which leads to the production of prompt scintillation light. By applying appropriate electric fields, some of the ionized electrons can be separated from their parent ions. The fraction of the ionized electrons extracted in a given applied field depends on the separation distance between the electrons and the ions. We report the determination of the mean electron-ion separation distance for charge pairs produced along the tracks of bet…
We revisit a classic study [D. S. Hall {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 81}, 1539 (1998)] of interpenetrating Bose-Einstein condensates in the hyperfine states $\ket{F = 1, m_f = -1}\equiv\ket{1}$ and $\ket{F = 2, m_f = +1}\equiv\ket{2}$ of ${}^{87}$Rb and observe striking new non-equilibrium component separation dynamics in the form of oscillating ring-like structures. The process of component separation is not significantly damped, a finding that also contrasts sharply with earlier experimental work, allowing a clean first look at a collective excitation of a binary superfluid. We further…
We study the ground state quantum phase diagram for a two species Bose mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice using the finite size density matrix renormalization group(FSDMRG) method. We discuss our results for different combinations of inter and intra species interaction strengths with commensurate and incommensurate fillings of the bosons. The phases we have obtained are superfluid, Mott insulator and a novel phase separation, where different species reside in spatially separate regions. The spatially separated phase is further classified into phase separated superfluid(PS-SF) and Mot…
We consider a mixture of two-species atomic Bose-Einstein codensates coupled to a bound molecular state at zero temperature via interspecies Feshbach resonance. The interspecies Feshbach coupling precludes the possibility of doubly mixed phases while enables not only the pure molecular superfluid but also the pure atomic superfluids to exist as distinct phases. We show that this system is able to support a rich set of phase separations, including that between two distinct mixed atom-molecule phases. We pay particular attention to the effects of the Feschbach coupling and the particle collision…
We study population imbalanced Fermi mixtures under quasi-two-dimensional confinement at zero temperature. Using mean-field theory and the local-density approximation, we study the ground state configuration throughout the BEC-BCS crossover. We find the trapped system to be either fully normal or to consist of a superfluid core surrounded by a normal shell, which is itself either fully or partially polarized. Upon changing the trap imbalance, the trap configuration may undergo continuous transitions between the different ground states. Finally, we argue that thermal equilibration throughout th…
