The rate of the hydrogen-burning carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle is controlled by the slowest process, 14N(p,gamma)15O, which proceeds by capture to the ground and several excited states in 15O. Previous extrapolations for the ground state contribution disagreed by a factor 2, corresponding to 15% uncertainty in the total astrophysical S-factor. At the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400 kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy, a new experiment on ground state capture has been carried out at 317.8, 334.4, and 353.3 keV center-of-mass energy. Systematic corrections have been reduced considerably with respect to previous studies by using a Clover detector and by adopting a relative analysis. The previous discrepancy has been resolved, and ground state capture no longer dominates the uncertainty of the total S-factor.
Photon-induced reactions during the astrophysical p- (or gamma-) process occur at typical temperatures of 1.8 < T9 < 3.3. Experimental data of (gamma,n), (gamma,p), or (gamma, alpha) reactions - if available in the relevant energy region - cannot be used directly to measure astrophysical (gamma,n), (gamma,p), or (gamma, alpha) reaction rates because of the thermal excitation of target nuclei at these high temperatures. Usually, statistical model calculations are used to predict photon-induced reaction rates. The relations between experimental reaction cross sections, theoretical predictions, and…
The nucleosynthesis of heavy neutron-deficient nuclei in a stellar photon bath at the temperatures relevant for the astrophysical gamma process was investigated. In order to derive (gamma,n) cross sections and reaction rates, the stellar photon bath was simulated by the superposition of several bremsstrahlung spectra with different endpoint energies. As a first test for this method, the (gamma,n) reaction rates of the platinum isotopes 190Pt, 192Pt, and 198Pt were derived. The results are compared to other experimental data and theoretical calculations.
The ^18F(p, alpha)^15O reaction is recognized as one of the most important reaction for nova gamma-ray astronomy as it governs the early =< 511 keV emission. However, its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures due to unknown low-energy resonance strengths. In order to better constrain this reaction rate, we have studied the one-nucleon transfer reaction, D(^18F,p alpha)^15N, at the CRC-RIB facility at Louvain La Neuve.
We calculated in detail the angular distribution of gamma-rays and the resulting shape of the gamma-ray line produced by the nuclear deexcitation of the 4.439 MeV state of ^12C following proton and alpha-particle interactions with ^12C and ^16O in the energy range from threshold to 100 MeV per nucleon, making use of available experimental data. In the proton energy range from 8.6 to 20 MeV, the extensive data set of a recent accelerator experiment on gamma-ray line shapes and angular distributions was used to deduce parameterizations for the gamma-ray emission of the 2^+, 4.439 MeV state of ^1…
The 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction is recognized to be one of the most important reactions for nova gamma-ray astronomy as it governs the early E <= 511keV gamma emission. However in the nova temperature regime, its rate remains largely uncertain due to unknown low-energy resonance strengths. We report here the measurement of the D(18F,p)19F(alpha)15N one-nucleon transfer reaction, induced by a 14 MeV 18F radioactive beam impinging on a CD2 target; outgoing protons and 15N (or alpha-particles) were detected in coincidence in two silicon strip detectors. A DWBA analysis of the data resulted in new li…
Nucleosynthesis processes involve reactions on several thousand nuclei, both close to and far off stability. The preparation of reaction rates to be used in astrophysical investigations requires experimental and theoretical input. In this context, two interesting aspects are discussed: (i) the relevant gamma transition energies in astrophysical capture reactions, and (ii) the newly discovered Coulomb suppression of the stellar enhancement factor. The latter makes a number of reactions with negative Q value more favorable for experimental investigation than their inverse reactions, contrary to …
The He3(He4,gamma)Be7 and H3(He4,gamma)Li7 reactions are studied in an extended two-cluster model which contains alpha+h/t and Li6+p/n clusterizations. We show that the inclusion of the Li6+p/n channels can significantly change the zero-energy reaction cross sections, S(0), and other properties of the Be7 and Li7 nuclei, like the quadrupole moments Q. However, the results agree with the known correlation trend between S(0) and Q. Moreover, we demonstrate that the value of the zero-energy derivatives of the astrophysical S-factors are more uncertain than currently believed.
The 21Na(p,gamma)22Mg reaction is expected to play an important role in the nucleosynthesis of 22Na in Oxygen-Neon novae. The decay of 22Na leads to the emission of a characteristic 1.275 MeV gamma-ray line. This report provides the first direct measurement of the rate of this reaction using a radioactive 21Na beam, and discusses its astrophysical implications. The energy of the important state was measured to be E$_{c.m.}$= 205.7 $\pm$ 0.5 keV with a resonance strength $ωγ= 1.03\pm0.16_{stat}\pm0.14_{sys}$ meV.
Neutron stars in close binary star systems often accrete matter from their companion stars. Thermonuclear ignition of the accreted material in the atmosphere of the neutron star leads to a thermonuclear explosion which is observed as an X-ray burst occurring periodically between hours and days depending on the accretion rate. The ignition conditions are characterized by a sensitive interplay between the accretion rate of the fuel supply and its depletion rate by nuclear burning in the hot CNO cycle and the rp-process. For accretion rates close to stable burning the burst ignition therefore dep…
A semi-microscopic model for the low-energy photodisintegration of the 9Be nucleus is constructed, and the experimental data are analyzed with its help. The older radioactive isotope data are supported by this analysis. The theoretical photodisintegration cross section is derived. The astrophysical rates for the reaction alpha + alpha + n -> 9Be + gamma and the reverse photodisintegration of 9Be are calculated. The new reaction rate for alpha + alpha + n -> 9Be + gamma is compared with previous estimations.
The increase at low energy of the S-factor for the 16O(p,gamma)17F* reaction claimed by Morlock et al. to be a new observation is well documented and explained in the literature.
The most important systematical errors in determination of level density and radiative strength functions for deformed nuclei have been estimated from the gamma-ray spectra in nuclear reactions like the stripping or pickup reactions.
Gamma-ray production cross sections have been measured for gamma-ray lines copiously emitted in the $^3$He bombardment of $^{16}$O nuclei: the 937, 1042 and 1081 keV lines of $^{18}$F and the 1887 keV line of $^{18}$Ne. Four Ge detectors with BGO shielding for Compton suppression were used to measure the angular distributions of the gamma-rays. The excitation functions have been obtained for $^3$He bombarding energies from 3.7 to 36 MeV. Total cross sections are tabulated for calculations relevant to gamma-ray astronomy. The importance of these lines as diagnosis for the presence and propertie…
Photon-induced reactions play a key role in the nucleosynthesis of rare neutron-deficient p-nuclei. The paper focuses on (gamma, alpha), (gamma,p), and (gamma,n) reactions which define the corresponding p-process path. The relation between stellar reaction rates and laboratory cross sections is analyzed for photon-induced reactions and their inverse capture reactions to evaluate various experimental approaches. An improved version S_C(E) of the astrophysical S-factor is suggested which is based on the Coulomb wave functions. S_C(E) avoids the apparent energy dependence which is otherwise obtain…
The shell model embedded in the continuum is applied to calculate the astrophysical S-factor and the reaction rate for the radiative proton capture reaction 17F(p,gamma)18Ne. The dominant contribution to the cross-section at very low energies is due to M1 transitions J_i^pi = 2^+ --> J_f^pi = 2_1^+ whose magnitude is controlled by a weakly bound 2_2^+ state at the excitation energy E_x = 3.62 MeV.
Solar neutrino fluxes depend both on astrophysical and on nuclear physics inputs, namely on the cross sections of the reactions responsible for neutrino production inside the Solar core. While the flux of solar 8B neutrinos has been recently measured at Superkamiokande with a 3.5% uncertainty and a precise measurement of 7Be neutrino flux is foreseen in the next future, the predicted fluxes are still affected by larger errors. The largest nuclear physics uncertainty to determine the fluxes of 8B and 7Be neutrinos comes from the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be reaction. The uncertainty on its S-factor is d…
The cross sections of 70Ge(n,2n)69Ge, 72Ge(n,2n)71Ge, 76Ge(n,gamma)77(g+0.21m)Ge, 76Ge(n,2n)75Ge nuclear reactions were measured at the energy of neutrons 13.96(6) MeV by activation method with gamma-ray and X-ray spectra studies.
The 44Ti(t1/2 = 59 y) nuclide, an important signature of supernova nucleosynthesis, has recently been observed as live radioactivity by gamma-ray astronomy from the Cas A remnant. We investigate in the laboratory the major 44Ti production reaction, 40Ca(alpha,gamma)44Ti (E_cm = 0.6-1.2 MeV/u), by direct off- line counting of 44Ti nuclei. The yield, significantly higher than inferred from previous experiments, is analyzed in terms of a statistical model using microscopic nuclear inputs. The associated stellar rate has important astrophysical consequences, increasing the calculated supernova 44T…
Photoactivation measurements on 144Sm have been performed with bremsstrahlung endpoint energies from 10.0 to 15.5 MeV at the bremsstrahlung facility of the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE of Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The measured activation yield for the 144Sm(gamma,n) reaction is compared with the calculated yield using cross sections from previous photoneutron experiments. The activation yields measured for all disintegration channels 144Sm(gamma,n), (gamma,p) and (gamma, alpha) are compared to the yield calculated by using Hauser-Feshbach statistical models. A new param…
We propose to measure the two--photon capture mode of pionic hydrogen using the RMC pair spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron. Currently, only an experimental upper limit of B.R.<= 5.5E-4 is available for the two-gamma capture mode. Our new data will critically test the theoretical calculations and the intriguing predicted dominance of the pi pi --> gamma gamma annihilation graph. More speculatively, since crossing symmetry relates pi pi --> gamma gamma to gamma pi --> gamma pi, this threshold reaction may be a novel probe of the pion's electric polarizability. We show results of our 1997 engi…
The quantum properties are important to study nuclear structure. The energy, spin, parity, transition order are usually interesting to research. In this experiment, 59Ni is activated by thermal neutron on 3rd horizontal channel of Dalat nuclear Reactor.
(Shorten version of the PRC abstract) Alpha-induced reactions on 127I have been studied using the activation technique in order to provide cross section data for the modeling of the astrophysical gamma process. The relative intensity of the 536.1 keV gamma transition was measured precisely, its uncertainty was reduced from 13% to 4%. By measuring the yield of the characteristic X-rays, the cross sections of the 127I(alpha,gamma)131Cs reaction have been determined for the first time close to the astrophysically relevant energy region, at energies 9.50 < Ec.m. < 15.15$ MeV. The 127I(alpha,n)130C…
High-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions gamma p -> p eta and gamma p -> p eta-prime have been measured using the CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The eta-prime results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The eta measurements extend the energy range of the world's large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the eta-prime measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.
The 18F(p,a)15O reaction is recognized as one of the most important reaction for nova gamma-ray astronomy as it governs the early <= 511 keV emission. However, its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures due to unknown low-energy resonance strengths. We report here on our last results concerning the study of the D(18F,pa)15N reaction, as well as on the determination of the 18F(p,a)15O reaction rate using the R-matrix theory. Remaining uncertainties are discussed.
The thermal neutron capture gamma radiations for 51V(n, g)52V reaction have been studied at Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor (DNRR). The gamma two-step cascade transition was measured by event-event coincidence spectrometer. The added-neutron binding energy in 52V was measured as 7.31 MeV. Energy and intensity transition of cascades were consistent with prediction of single particle model. Further more, the spin and parity of levels were confined.
Gamma-ray angular distributions for the resonances at Ep = 550 keV and 1747 keV of the radiative capture reaction 13-C(p,g)14-N have been measured, using intense proton beams on isotopically pure 13-C targets. Relative intensities for the strongest transitions were extracted with an accuracy of typically five per cent, making these resonances new useful gamma-ray standards for efficiency calibration in the energy range Egamma = 1.6 to 9 MeV.
A recoil coincidence technique has been applied to measure the alpha-decay branching ratios of near-threshold states in 19Ne. Populating these states using the (p,t) reaction in inverse kinematics, we detected the recoils and their decay products with 100% geometric efficiency using a magnetic spectrometer. Combining our branching ratio measurements with independent determinations of the radiative widths of these states, we calculate the astrophysical rate of 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne. Using this reaction rate, we perform hydrodynamic calculations of nova outbursts and conclude that no significant …
The interpretation of the most recent solar neutrinos experiments requires a good knowledge of the cross section of the reaction 7Be(p,gamma)8B at very small energy (Ecm=18 keV). We have recently measured this cross section for Ecm=0.35-1.4 MeV and for Ecm=0.112-0.190 MeV. We report here on the description of the preparation of the radioactive targets of 7Be used in these experiments.
We have investigated the 6Li(gamma, d) reaction theoretically for the formation of the eta'(958) mesic nucleus. We have reported the numerical results in this article.
The 6.1, 6.9 and 7.1 MeV photon yields in the reaction with protons in the 1.32 to 1.42 MeV energy range were determined from the comparison between experimental and simulated spectrum. The gamma-ray spectra were measured with a HPGe detector which was 72.5 mm in diameter and 60.5 mm in length. The reaction kinematics and the detector response function were simulated by different programs using the Monte Carlo method. The relative photon yields were obtained from the least-squares fit of the experimental gamma-ray spectra to the convolution of the detector response function with the photon ene…
A broad excited state was observed in 6-He with energy E_x = 5 +/- 1 MeV and width Gamma = 3 +/- 1 MeV, following the reaction Li-7(gamma,p)He-6. The state is consistent with a number of broad resonances predicted by recent cluster model calculations. The well-established reaction mechanism, combined with a simple and transparent analysis procedure confers considerable validity to this observation.
The 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction is one of the major source of uncertainties in estimating the 8B solar neutrino flux and is critical for undertsanding the Solar Neutrino Problem and neutrinos. The main source of uncertainty is the existence of conflicting data with different absolute normalization. Attempts to measure this reaction rate with 7Be beams are under way by the UConn-LLN collaboration, and we discuss a newly emerging method to extract this cross section from the Coulomb dissociation of the radioactive beam of 8B. We discuss some of the issues relevant for this study including the questi…
A recently published letter reports a measurement of alpha decay from states in 19Ne at excitation energies below 4.5 MeV. The measured alpha decay branching ratios B_alpha are used to calculate the astrophysical rate of the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne reaction and to draw conclusions regarding the transition between steady state and unstable nuclear burning on accreting neutron stars. Here I show that the calculated astrophysical reaction rate is based on an unreliable value of B_alpha for the 4.03 MeV state and point out a serious internal inconsistency in the letter's treatment of low statistics a…
A 50 element BaF2 gamma-multiplicity filter has been designed, fabricated and installed successfully at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata for angular momentum selection in heavy ion collision reactions. A thorough GEANT3 Monte Carlo simulation was performed to optimize the individual detector shape and geometrical structure of the array. The detectors have been fabricated in-house from bare barium fluoride crystals (each measuring 5 cm in length and having cross-sectional area of 3.5 x 3.5 cm2). The basic detector properties have been studied using the lab standard -ray sour…
Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions $γp \to K^+ K^+ (X)$ and $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^- (X)$. The mass split of the $Ξ$ doublet is measured to be $5.4\pm 1.8$ MeV/c$^2$, consistent with existing measurements. The differential (total) cross sections for the $Ξ^{-}$ have been determined for photon beam energies from 2.75 to 3.85 (4.75) GeV, and are consistent with a possible production mechanism of $Y^*\to K^+Ξ^-$ through a $t$-channel process. The reaction $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^-[Ξ^0]$ has also been investigated in search of excited cascade resonances. No signi…
The 14C(alpha,gamma) reaction rate at temperatures below 0.3 GK depends on the properties of two near threshold resonances in 18O, the 1- at 6.198 MeV and the 3- at 6.404 MeV. The alpha+14C Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients (ANCs) for these resonances were determined using the alpha-transfer reactions 14C(7Li,t) and 14C(6Li,d) at sub-Coulomb energies. The 14C(alpha,gamma) reaction rate at low temperatures has been evaluated. Implications of the new reaction rate on the evolution of accreting helium white dwarfs and on the nucleosynthesis of low mass stars during the asymptotic giant branch…
The absolute strengths of the Ea=1175keV resonance in the 6Li(a,g)10B reaction and of the Ea=814 keV resonance in the 7Li(a,g)11B reaction have been measured to $ωγ$=366+-38 meV and $ωγ$=300+-32 meV, respectively, in good agreement with previous values. These resonances can be used to measure the absolute acceptance of the recoil separator ERNA to a precision of about 10%.
In standard potential-model descriptions of the Be7(p,gamma)B8 reaction the Be7+p spectroscopic factors S appear in the cross section. We argue that the microscopic substructure effects which are represented by S are short-ranged and cannot affect the asymptotic normalization of the wave function. We believe that the standard way of describing reactions in a potential model may be incorrect and the low-energy cross section should not depend on S in the case of external capture reactions, like Be7(p,gamma)B8
Precise measurements of the deuteron vector analyzing power Ayd and the tensor analyzing power Ayy of the H(d,gamma)He-3 capture reaction have been performed at deuteron energies of 29MeV and 45MeV. The data have been compared to theoretical state-of-the-art calculations available today. Due to the large sensitivity of polarization observables and the precision of the data light could be shed on small effects present in the dynamics of the reaction.
In the present work, we report our in depth study of 12C(p,p'gamma)12C reaction both experimentally and theoretically with proton beam energy ranging from 8 MeV to 22 MeV. The angular distributions were measured at six different angles. We discuss the gamma angular distributions, total cross sections values for 4.438, 9.64, 12.7 and 15.1 MeV states. We also describe the theoretical interpretation of our measurements using optical model analysis. We also report the branching ratios from our measurements. For the first time, we have measured the the cross section and branching ratio for the 9.64…
The properties of a clinical LINAC are investigated for a study of photoactivation cross sections slightly above the neutron threshold. As an example, the photoactivation of a tiny amount of gold by the 197Au(gamma,n)196Au reaction has been measured. The derived photon intensity is at least comparable to conventional and widely used photon sources. In combination with its extremely stable operation, a clinical LINAC ensures that photoactivation studies can be performed for a wide number of targets with very limited beamtime.
In an effort to better determine the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction rate, we have performed inclusive and exclusive measurements of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B. The former was a study of longitudinal momentum distributions of 7Be fragments emitted in the Coulomb breakup of intermediate energy 8B beams on Pb and Ag targets. Analysis of these data yielded the E2 contribution to the breakup cross section. In the exclusive measurement, we determined the cross section for the Coulomb breakup of 8B on Pb at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reactio…
For the better understanding of the astrophysical gamma-process the experimental determination of low energy proton- and alpha-capture cross sections on heavy isotopes is required. The existing data for the 92Mo(p,gamma)93Tc reaction are contradictory and strong fluctuation of the cross section is observed which cannot be explained by the statistical model. In this paper a new determination of the 92Mo(p,gamma)93Tc and 98Mo(p,gamma)99mTc cross sections based on thick target yield measurements are presented and the results are compared with existing data and model calculations. Reaction rates o…
High-statistics differential cross sections and spin density matrix elements for the reaction gamma p -> p omega have been measured using the CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass (CM) energies from threshold up to 2.84 GeV. Results are reported in 112 10-MeV wide CM energy bins, each subdivided into cos(theta_CM) bins of width 0.1. These are the most precise and extensive omega photoproduction measurements to date. A number of prominent structures are clearly present in the data. Many of these have not previously been observed due to limited statistics in earlier measurements.
For the synthesis of the heavy, proton rich isotopes in the astrophysical gamma-process the precise knowledge of alpha-induced cross sections is of high importance. We have initiated a comprehensive study of the 64Zn+alpha system involving the cross section measurement of different reaction channels as well as the elastic scattering at low, astrophysically relevant energies. In this paper the experimental technique and some preliminary results of the 64Zn(alpha,p)67Ga cross section measurement are presented.
We discuss the possibility to extract the neutron-neutron scattering length a_{nn} from experimental spectra on the reaction gamma d --> pi^+ nn. The transition operator is calculated to high accuracy from chiral perturbation theory. We argue that for properly chosen kinematics, the theoretical uncertainty of the method can be as low as 0.1 fm.
We have determined the positions of the (gamma,n) resonances and upper limits for the integrated cross sections for the (gamma,n) reactions, using data for the inverse process (n,gamma). With the aid of these data we have estimated the number of low-energy neutrons which can be generated by the irradiation of a target with a gamma-ray beam. Among the reactions producing thermal neutrons via (gamma,n) reaction we mention 185Re(gamma,n)184Re with an upper limit of the integrated cross section of 2.4 b-eV, and 178Hf(gamma,n)177Hf with an upper limit of the integrated cross section of 0.9 b-eV.
In a recent work, the cross section measurement of the 64Zn(p,alpha)61Cu reaction was used to prove that the standard alpha-nucleus optical potentials used in astrophysical network calculation fail to reproduce the experimental data at energies relevant for heavy element nucleosynthesis. In the present paper the analysis of the obtained experimental data is continued by comparing the results with the predictions using different parameters. It is shown that the recently suggested modification of the standard optical potential leads to a better description of the data.
The first data from MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden on pion production in photonuclear reactions at threshold energies, is presented. The decrease of the total yield of pi+ in gamma + 12C, 27Al reactions below 200 MeV as well as differential, dsigma/dOmega, cross sections follow essentially predictions from an intranuclear cascade model with an attractive potential for pion-nucleus interaction in its simplest form. Double differential, d2sigma/dOmegadT, cross sections at 176 MeV show, however, deviations from the model, which call for refinements of nuclear and Coulomb potentials and possibly also for…
Background: Neutron-induced backgrounds are a significant concern for experiments that require extremely low levels of radioactive backgrounds such as direct dark matter searches and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. Unmeasured neutron scattering cross sections are often accounted for incorrectly in Monte Carlo simulations. Purpose: Determine partial gamma-ray production cross sections for (n,xng) reactions in natural argon for incident neutron energies between 1 and 30 MeV. Methods: The broad spectrum neutron beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) was used used for t…
The cross sections of the 162Er(a,g,)166Yb and 162Er(a,n)165Yb reactions have been measured for the first time. The radiative alpha capture reaction cross section was measured from Ec.m. = 16.09 down to Ec.m. = 11.21 MeV, close to the astrophysically relevant region (which lies between 7.8 and 11.48 MeV at 3 GK stellar temperature). The 162Er(a,n)165Yb reaction was studied above the reaction threshold between Ec.m. = 12.19 and 16.09 MeV. The fact that the 162Er(a,g)166Yb cross sections were measured below the (a,n) threshold at first time in this mass region opens the opportunity to study dire…
The applicability of Coulomb dissociation reactions to determine the cross section for the inverse neutron capture reaction was explored using the reaction 8Li(gamma,n)7Li. A 69.5 MeV/nucleon 8Li beam was incident on a Pb target, and the outgoing neutron and 7Li nucleus were measured in coincidence. The deduced (n,gamma) excitation function is consistent with data for the direct capture reaction 7Li(n,gamma)8Li and with low-energy effective field theory calculations.
The astrophysical factor of the 8B(p,gamma)9C at zero energy, S18(0), is determined from three-body model analysis of 9C breakup processes. The elastic breakup 208Pb(9C,p8B)208Pb at 65 MeV/nucleon and the one-proton removal reaction of 9C at 285 MeV/nucleon on C and Al targets are calculated with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT), respectively. The asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of 9C in the p-8B configuration extracted from the two reactions show good consistency, in contrast to in the previous studies. As a result of th…
In order to extend the experimental database relevant for the astrophysical gamma-process towards the unexplored heavier mass region, the cross sections of the 151Eu(alpha,gamma)155Tb and 151Eu(alpha,n)154Tb reactions have been measured at low energies between 12 and 17 MeV using the activation technique. The results are compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations and it is found that the calculations overestimate the cross sections by about a factor of two. A sensitivity analysis shows that this discrepancy is caused by the inadequate description of the alpha+nucleus chann…
Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)sigma0 reactions are measured for the first time for Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV and 0.6<cos(theta_cm(K+))<1.0 by using linearly polarized photons at the Laser-Electron-Photon facility at SPring-8 (LEPS). The observed asymmetries are positive and gradually increase with rising photon energy. The data are not consistent with theoretical predictions based on tree-level effective Lagrangian approaches. Including the new results in the development of the models is, therefore, crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism and to test …
Cross sections for the strongest gamma-ray emission lines produced in alpha-particle reactions with C, Mg, Si, Fe have been measured in the range E_alpha = 50 - 90 MeV at the center for proton therapy at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. Data for more than 60 different gamma-ray lines were determined, with particular efforts for lines that are in cross section compilations/evaluations with astrophysical purpose, and where data exist at lower projectile energies. The data are compared with predictions of a modern nuclear reaction code and cross-section curves of the latest evaluation for gamma-ray …
Proton-activation reactions on natural and enriched palladium samples were investigated via the activation technique in the energy range of E_p=2.75 MeV to 9 MeV, close to the upper end of the respective Gamow window of the gamma process. We have determined cross sections for 102Pd(p,gamma)103Ag, 104Pd(p,gamma)105Ag, and 105Pd(p,n)105Ag, as well as partial cross sections of 104Pd(p,n)104Ag^g, 105Pd(p,gamma)106Ag^m, 106Pd(p,n)106Ag^m, and 110Pd(p,n)110Ag^m with uncertainties between 3% and 15% for constraining theoretical Hauser-Feshbach rates and for direct use in gamma-process calculations.
The purpose of this master thesis is to simulate suitable nuclear reactions for a commissioning experiment, to be performed with the AGATA gamma-ray tracking spectrometer. The main aim of the work is to find a reaction, which gives large Doppler effects of the emitted gamma rays, with as small contribution as possible due to the energy and angular spread of the nuclei emitting the gamma rays. Inverse kinematics heavy-ion (HI) fusion reactions of the type (HI,gamma), (HI, n) on proton and deuteron targets have been studied. Target effects were investigated using the program TRIM in order to det…
A measurement of 74Ge(p,gamma)75As at low proton energies, inside the astrophysically relevant energy region, is important in several respects. The reaction is directly important as it is a bottleneck in the reaction flow which produces the lightest p nucleus 74Se. It is also an important addition to the data set required to test reaction-rate predictions and to allow an improvement in the global p+nucleus optical potential required in such calculations. An in-beam experiment was performed, making it possible to measure in the energy range between 2.1 and 3.7 MeV, which is for the most part in…
Fission and gamma-emission probabilities induced by transfer or inelastic scattering reactions with light projectile nuclei are very valuable quantities for constraining the models that describe the de-excitation of heavy nuclei. We have developed an experimental set-up that allows us to simultaneously measure fission and gamma-emission probabilities. The measurement of the gamma-emission probability at excitation energies where the fission channel is open is challenging due to the intense background of gamma rays emitted by the fission fragments. We discuss the procedure to subtract such a ba…
