The thermal neutron capture gamma radiations for 51V(n, g)52V reaction have been studied at Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor (DNRR). The gamma two-step cascade transition was measured by event-event coincidence spectrometer. The added-neutron binding energy in 52V was measured as 7.31 MeV. Energy and intensity transition of cascades were consistent with prediction of single particle model. Further more, the spin and parity of levels were confined.
Two-step cascades from the 192Os(n th,gamma)193Os reaction were studied in gamma-gamma coincidence measurement. The decay scheme of 193Os was established up to the excitation energy ~3 MeV. The excitation spectrum of intermediate levels of most intense cascades was found to be practically harmonic.
The gamma-spectra were calculated for the set of different level densities and radiative strength functions. The sufficiently precise reproduction of the experiment is impossible without taking into account the influence of the process of the nucleons Cooper pairs breaking on any nuclei cascade gamma-decay parameters.
The quantum properties are important to study nuclear structure. The energy, spin, parity, transition order are usually interesting to research. In this experiment, 59Ni is activated by thermal neutron on 3rd horizontal channel of Dalat nuclear Reactor.
Main properties of the excited states of $^{118}$Sn manifesting themselves in cascade gamma-decay of its compound state were studied. As in other heavier nuclei studied earlier, qualitative interpretation of the totality of the observed properties of this nucleus is impossible without accounting for coexistence and interaction of quasi-particle and collective nuclear excitations and their considerable influence on the main parameters of the process under study.
Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions $γp \to K^+ K^+ (X)$ and $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^- (X)$. The mass split of the $Ξ$ doublet is measured to be $5.4\pm 1.8$ MeV/c$^2$, consistent with existing measurements. The differential (total) cross sections for the $Ξ^{-}$ have been determined for photon beam energies from 2.75 to 3.85 (4.75) GeV, and are consistent with a possible production mechanism of $Y^*\to K^+Ξ^-$ through a $t$-channel process. The reaction $γp \to K^+ K^+ π^-[Ξ^0]$ has also been investigated in search of excited cascade resonances. No signi…
Transition energies and intensities of 454 two-step cascades following thermal neutron capture in Sn-117 have been measured. These data allowed us to make more precise and considerably extend the earlier obtained decay scheme of the Sn-118 nucleus. Autocorrelation analysis of the excitation spectrum of intermediate levels of the most intense cascades allowed us to determine the most probable period of their regularity. Besides, the analysis showed impossibility quantitatively to reproduce the total cascade intensity with accounting only for the excitations of the fermion type. This resulted in…
The two-step cascade method previously used in neutron capture experiments is now applied to a proton capture reaction. The spectrum of two-step cascades populating the first 2+ level of 60Ni has been measured with 59Co(p,2gamma)60Ni reaction. The simulation technique used for the spectrum analysis allows one to reveal the range of possible shapes of both E1 and M1 gamma-strength functions. The low-energy enhancement previously observed in 3He induced reactions is seen to appear in M1 strength functions of 60Ni.
An influence of some incorrectness of analysis on the level densities and radiative strength functions derived from the experimental gamma-spectra is considered. It was shown that the obtaining of reliable data from the reaction (n,2gamma) requires one to derive dependence of the two-step cascade intensities on their primary transitions energy. The influence of some conditions of an analysis of the experimental gamma-spectra from reaction (3He,alpha) on the expected value of both level density and radiative strength functions was estimated. The ways to decrease these uncertainties are suggeste…
Background. The $^{12}$C$(α,γ)^{16}$O reaction plays a fundamental role in astrophysics and needs to be known with accuracy better than 10%. Cascade $γ$ transitions through the excited states of $^{16}$O are contributing to the uncertainty. Purpose. To constrain the contribution of the 0$^+$ (6.05 MeV) and 3$^-$ (6.13 MeV) cascade transitions. Method. The $α$ Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient for these states were measured using the $α$-transfer reaction $^{12}$C$(^6$Li,$d)^{16}$O at sub-Coulomb energies. Results. The 0$^+$ and 3$^-$ cascade transitions contribution was found to be 1.96$\pm…
Re-analysis of experimental data on primary gamma-transitions averaged over some energy intervals of neutron resonances has been performed. Approximation of their cumulative sums together with extrapolation of the obtained distribution to zero value allowed us to determine mean intensities of of E1- and M1-transitions, their probable number and total dispersion of intensity deviations from the mean value. The level density and sum of radiative strength functions determined in this way confirm main peculiarities of these nuclear parameters determined from intensities of the two-step gamma-casca…
The model-free analysis of experimental data in the intensities of two-step cascades into 163Dy shows, that the basically special features of the cascade gamma-decay of its compound-state completely correspond to those observed in other nuclei. Thus, the density of the levels in this nucleus with good precision it is reproduced as sum of three, five, seven-quasiparticle excitations with the tenfold, as the minimum, by an increase due to vibration type excitations. The greatest changes in the sum of the radiation strength functions of dipole primary gamma-transitions correlate with a change in …
To further study the "pygmy" resonance phenomena in the photon strength function, we reanalyzed the two-step cascade data for the target nucleus $^{197}$Au using the Dubna group approach. The range of obtained values allows for meaningful conclusions: the level density at low excitation energy shows a step-like behavior; the electric dipole photon strength function has a broad maximum around $E_γ=5$ MeV and is not typical of a "pygmy" resonance; the level density below $B_{n}$ also demonstrates step-like behavior.
Using our early experimental data on the cascade gamma-transitions from the 162Dy(n,2gamma) reaction, we determined dependence of the cascade intensity on the energy of their intermediate levels, and then - level density and radiatibe strength functions which allow precise reproduction of the experimental two-step cascade intensities and total gamma-width. Level density in this nucleus (like in other earlier studied even-odd nuclei) in the interval 1 to 3 MeV is considerably less than that predicted by Fermi-gas model. Enhancement of the radiative strength functions, caused by strong correlati…
Level density and radiative strength functions which allow precise reproduction of the two-step cascade intensity, gamma width of compound state and cascade population of levels up to excitation energy of about 3.5 MeV were determined using experimental data on the (n,2gamma) reaction. Level density in these nuclei (like in other even-odd nuclei studied earlier) in wide excitation energy interval is considerably less than that predicted by Fermi-gas model. Enhancement of the radiative strength functions, caused by strong correlations between cascade gamma-decay parameters, most probably, relat…
Reliable information on level density and radiative strength functions for the excitation energy region with density of excited states more than 100 levels per 1 MeV and higher can be obtained now only by its model-free extraction from intensities of two-step cascades proceeding between compound states and few low-lying levels. Full model-free determination of these parameters in any method is possible only if one can extract from additional experimental information about general trend in dependence of ratio of strength functions of emitted reaction products of a given type on excitation energ…
The increase at low energy of the S-factor for the 16O(p,gamma)17F* reaction claimed by Morlock et al. to be a new observation is well documented and explained in the literature.
The most important systematical errors in determination of level density and radiative strength functions for deformed nuclei have been estimated from the gamma-ray spectra in nuclear reactions like the stripping or pickup reactions.
We report on the first measurement of exclusive Xi-(1321) hyperon photoproduction in gamma p --> K+ K+ Xi- for 3.2 < E(gamma) < 3.9 GeV. The final state is identified by the missing mass in p(gamma,K+ K+)X measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. We have detected a significant number of the ground-state Xi-(1321)1/2+, and have estimated the total cross section for its production. We have also observed the first excited state Xi-(1530)3/2+. Photoproduction provides a copious source of Xi's. We discuss the possibilities of a search for the recently proposed Xi5-- and Xi5+ pentaqu…
The cross sections of 70Ge(n,2n)69Ge, 72Ge(n,2n)71Ge, 76Ge(n,gamma)77(g+0.21m)Ge, 76Ge(n,2n)75Ge nuclear reactions were measured at the energy of neutrons 13.96(6) MeV by activation method with gamma-ray and X-ray spectra studies.
The study of transfer-induced gamma-decay probabilities is very useful for understanding the surrogate-reaction method and, more generally, for constraining statistical-model calculations. One of the main difficulties in the measurement of gamma-decay probabilities is the determination of the gamma-cascade detection efficiency. In [Nucl. Instrum. Meth. A 700, 59 (2013)] we developed the Extrapolated Efficiency Method (EXEM), a new method to measure this quantity. In this work, we have applied, for the first time, the EXEM to infer the gamma-cascade detection efficiency in the actinide region. …
Photoactivation measurements on 144Sm have been performed with bremsstrahlung endpoint energies from 10.0 to 15.5 MeV at the bremsstrahlung facility of the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE of Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The measured activation yield for the 144Sm(gamma,n) reaction is compared with the calculated yield using cross sections from previous photoneutron experiments. The activation yields measured for all disintegration channels 144Sm(gamma,n), (gamma,p) and (gamma, alpha) are compared to the yield calculated by using Hauser-Feshbach statistical models. A new param…
We propose to measure the two--photon capture mode of pionic hydrogen using the RMC pair spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron. Currently, only an experimental upper limit of B.R.<= 5.5E-4 is available for the two-gamma capture mode. Our new data will critically test the theoretical calculations and the intriguing predicted dominance of the pi pi --> gamma gamma annihilation graph. More speculatively, since crossing symmetry relates pi pi --> gamma gamma to gamma pi --> gamma pi, this threshold reaction may be a novel probe of the pion's electric polarizability. We show results of our 1997 engi…
(Shorten version of the PRC abstract) Alpha-induced reactions on 127I have been studied using the activation technique in order to provide cross section data for the modeling of the astrophysical gamma process. The relative intensity of the 536.1 keV gamma transition was measured precisely, its uncertainty was reduced from 13% to 4%. By measuring the yield of the characteristic X-rays, the cross sections of the 127I(alpha,gamma)131Cs reaction have been determined for the first time close to the astrophysically relevant energy region, at energies 9.50 < Ec.m. < 15.15$ MeV. The 127I(alpha,n)130C…
High-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions gamma p -> p eta and gamma p -> p eta-prime have been measured using the CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The eta-prime results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The eta measurements extend the energy range of the world's large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the eta-prime measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.
The 18F(p,a)15O reaction is recognized as one of the most important reaction for nova gamma-ray astronomy as it governs the early <= 511 keV emission. However, its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures due to unknown low-energy resonance strengths. We report here on our last results concerning the study of the D(18F,pa)15N reaction, as well as on the determination of the 18F(p,a)15O reaction rate using the R-matrix theory. Remaining uncertainties are discussed.
Gamma-ray angular distributions for the resonances at Ep = 550 keV and 1747 keV of the radiative capture reaction 13-C(p,g)14-N have been measured, using intense proton beams on isotopically pure 13-C targets. Relative intensities for the strongest transitions were extracted with an accuracy of typically five per cent, making these resonances new useful gamma-ray standards for efficiency calibration in the energy range Egamma = 1.6 to 9 MeV.
We show that the combined analysis of the quasicontinuous gamma spectra from the (He-3,alpha) and the (n-thermal,2gamma) reactions gives the possibility to measure the electromagnetic character of soft dipole resonances. Two-step gamma-cascade spectra have been calculated, using level densities and radiative strength functions from the (He-3,alpha gamma) reaction. The calculations show that the intensity of the two-step cascades depends on the electromagnetic character of the soft dipole resonance under study. The difference reaches 40-100% which can be measured experimentally.
The interpretation of the most recent solar neutrinos experiments requires a good knowledge of the cross section of the reaction 7Be(p,gamma)8B at very small energy (Ecm=18 keV). We have recently measured this cross section for Ecm=0.35-1.4 MeV and for Ecm=0.112-0.190 MeV. We report here on the description of the preparation of the radioactive targets of 7Be used in these experiments.
A broad excited state was observed in 6-He with energy E_x = 5 +/- 1 MeV and width Gamma = 3 +/- 1 MeV, following the reaction Li-7(gamma,p)He-6. The state is consistent with a number of broad resonances predicted by recent cluster model calculations. The well-established reaction mechanism, combined with a simple and transparent analysis procedure confers considerable validity to this observation.
A recently published letter reports a measurement of alpha decay from states in 19Ne at excitation energies below 4.5 MeV. The measured alpha decay branching ratios B_alpha are used to calculate the astrophysical rate of the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne reaction and to draw conclusions regarding the transition between steady state and unstable nuclear burning on accreting neutron stars. Here I show that the calculated astrophysical reaction rate is based on an unreliable value of B_alpha for the 4.03 MeV state and point out a serious internal inconsistency in the letter's treatment of low statistics a…
A 50 element BaF2 gamma-multiplicity filter has been designed, fabricated and installed successfully at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata for angular momentum selection in heavy ion collision reactions. A thorough GEANT3 Monte Carlo simulation was performed to optimize the individual detector shape and geometrical structure of the array. The detectors have been fabricated in-house from bare barium fluoride crystals (each measuring 5 cm in length and having cross-sectional area of 3.5 x 3.5 cm2). The basic detector properties have been studied using the lab standard -ray sour…
We study the production of bound cascade hypernuclei via the (K-,K+) reaction on 12C and 28Si targets within a covariant effective Lagrangian model, employing the cascade bound state spinors derived from the latest quark-meson coupling model as well as Dirac single particle wave functions. The K+-cascade production vertex is described by excitation, propagation and decay of Lambda and Sigma resonance states in the initial collision of a K- meson with a target proton in the incident channel. The parameters of the resonance vertices are fixed by describing the available data on total and differe…
Photon-induced reactions during the astrophysical p- (or gamma-) process occur at typical temperatures of 1.8 < T9 < 3.3. Experimental data of (gamma,n), (gamma,p), or (gamma, alpha) reactions - if available in the relevant energy region - cannot be used directly to measure astrophysical (gamma,n), (gamma,p), or (gamma, alpha) reaction rates because of the thermal excitation of target nuclei at these high temperatures. Usually, statistical model calculations are used to predict photon-induced reaction rates. The relations between experimental reaction cross sections, theoretical predictions, and…
The nucleosynthesis of heavy neutron-deficient nuclei in a stellar photon bath at the temperatures relevant for the astrophysical gamma process was investigated. In order to derive (gamma,n) cross sections and reaction rates, the stellar photon bath was simulated by the superposition of several bremsstrahlung spectra with different endpoint energies. As a first test for this method, the (gamma,n) reaction rates of the platinum isotopes 190Pt, 192Pt, and 198Pt were derived. The results are compared to other experimental data and theoretical calculations.
We have investigated the 6Li(gamma, d) reaction theoretically for the formation of the eta'(958) mesic nucleus. We have reported the numerical results in this article.
The 6.1, 6.9 and 7.1 MeV photon yields in the reaction with protons in the 1.32 to 1.42 MeV energy range were determined from the comparison between experimental and simulated spectrum. The gamma-ray spectra were measured with a HPGe detector which was 72.5 mm in diameter and 60.5 mm in length. The reaction kinematics and the detector response function were simulated by different programs using the Monte Carlo method. The relative photon yields were obtained from the least-squares fit of the experimental gamma-ray spectra to the convolution of the detector response function with the photon ene…
An improved version of the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) of nuclear reactions implemented in the codes CEM2k and the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM) has been developed recently at LANL to describe reactions induced by particles and nuclei at energies up to hundreds of GeV/nucleon for a number of applications. We present several improvements to the intranuclear cascade models used in CEM2k and LAQGSM developed recently to better describe the physics of nuclear reactions. First, we incorporate the photonuclear mode from CEM2k into LAQGSM to allow it to describe photonuc…
The 14C(alpha,gamma) reaction rate at temperatures below 0.3 GK depends on the properties of two near threshold resonances in 18O, the 1- at 6.198 MeV and the 3- at 6.404 MeV. The alpha+14C Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients (ANCs) for these resonances were determined using the alpha-transfer reactions 14C(7Li,t) and 14C(6Li,d) at sub-Coulomb energies. The 14C(alpha,gamma) reaction rate at low temperatures has been evaluated. Implications of the new reaction rate on the evolution of accreting helium white dwarfs and on the nucleosynthesis of low mass stars during the asymptotic giant branch…
In standard potential-model descriptions of the Be7(p,gamma)B8 reaction the Be7+p spectroscopic factors S appear in the cross section. We argue that the microscopic substructure effects which are represented by S are short-ranged and cannot affect the asymptotic normalization of the wave function. We believe that the standard way of describing reactions in a potential model may be incorrect and the low-energy cross section should not depend on S in the case of external capture reactions, like Be7(p,gamma)B8
For the better understanding of the astrophysical gamma-process the experimental determination of low energy proton- and alpha-capture cross sections on heavy isotopes is required. The existing data for the 92Mo(p,gamma)93Tc reaction are contradictory and strong fluctuation of the cross section is observed which cannot be explained by the statistical model. In this paper a new determination of the 92Mo(p,gamma)93Tc and 98Mo(p,gamma)99mTc cross sections based on thick target yield measurements are presented and the results are compared with existing data and model calculations. Reaction rates o…
We discuss the possibility to extract the neutron-neutron scattering length a_{nn} from experimental spectra on the reaction gamma d --> pi^+ nn. The transition operator is calculated to high accuracy from chiral perturbation theory. We argue that for properly chosen kinematics, the theoretical uncertainty of the method can be as low as 0.1 fm.
In a recent work, the cross section measurement of the 64Zn(p,alpha)61Cu reaction was used to prove that the standard alpha-nucleus optical potentials used in astrophysical network calculation fail to reproduce the experimental data at energies relevant for heavy element nucleosynthesis. In the present paper the analysis of the obtained experimental data is continued by comparing the results with the predictions using different parameters. It is shown that the recently suggested modification of the standard optical potential leads to a better description of the data.
Nucleosynthesis processes involve reactions on several thousand nuclei, both close to and far off stability. The preparation of reaction rates to be used in astrophysical investigations requires experimental and theoretical input. In this context, two interesting aspects are discussed: (i) the relevant gamma transition energies in astrophysical capture reactions, and (ii) the newly discovered Coulomb suppression of the stellar enhancement factor. The latter makes a number of reactions with negative Q value more favorable for experimental investigation than their inverse reactions, contrary to …
A brief description of our improvements and refinements that led from the CEM95 version of the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) code to CEM97 and to CEM2k is given. The increased accuracy and predictive power of the code CEM2k are shown by several examples. To describe fission and light-fragment (heavier than 4He) production, the CEM2k code has been merged with the GEM2 code of Furihata. We present some results on proton-induced fragmentation and fission reactions predicted by this extended version of CEM2k. We show that merging CEM2k with GEM2 allows us to describe many fission and fragmentation r…
The He3(He4,gamma)Be7 and H3(He4,gamma)Li7 reactions are studied in an extended two-cluster model which contains alpha+h/t and Li6+p/n clusterizations. We show that the inclusion of the Li6+p/n channels can significantly change the zero-energy reaction cross sections, S(0), and other properties of the Be7 and Li7 nuclei, like the quadrupole moments Q. However, the results agree with the known correlation trend between S(0) and Q. Moreover, we demonstrate that the value of the zero-energy derivatives of the astrophysical S-factors are more uncertain than currently believed.
The astrophysical factor of the 8B(p,gamma)9C at zero energy, S18(0), is determined from three-body model analysis of 9C breakup processes. The elastic breakup 208Pb(9C,p8B)208Pb at 65 MeV/nucleon and the one-proton removal reaction of 9C at 285 MeV/nucleon on C and Al targets are calculated with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT), respectively. The asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of 9C in the p-8B configuration extracted from the two reactions show good consistency, in contrast to in the previous studies. As a result of th…
In order to extend the experimental database relevant for the astrophysical gamma-process towards the unexplored heavier mass region, the cross sections of the 151Eu(alpha,gamma)155Tb and 151Eu(alpha,n)154Tb reactions have been measured at low energies between 12 and 17 MeV using the activation technique. The results are compared with the predictions of statistical model calculations and it is found that the calculations overestimate the cross sections by about a factor of two. A sensitivity analysis shows that this discrepancy is caused by the inadequate description of the alpha+nucleus chann…
Cross sections for the strongest gamma-ray emission lines produced in alpha-particle reactions with C, Mg, Si, Fe have been measured in the range E_alpha = 50 - 90 MeV at the center for proton therapy at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. Data for more than 60 different gamma-ray lines were determined, with particular efforts for lines that are in cross section compilations/evaluations with astrophysical purpose, and where data exist at lower projectile energies. The data are compared with predictions of a modern nuclear reaction code and cross-section curves of the latest evaluation for gamma-ray …
We investigate the production of a cascade hyperon (Xi) through the K^- + p --> K^+ (K^0) + Xi^- (Xi^0) reactions, within an effective Lagrangian model where these reactions proceed via excitations of Lambda and Sigma resonance intermediate states in s- and u-channels. The coupling constants at the various vertices are taken from previous studies and SU(3) symmetry considerations. The calculated total cross sections of these reactions, which are in good agreement with the available data, are dominated by the contributions from the Lambda(1520) intermediate resonant state. However, the K^+ meso…
A semi-microscopic model for the low-energy photodisintegration of the 9Be nucleus is constructed, and the experimental data are analyzed with its help. The older radioactive isotope data are supported by this analysis. The theoretical photodisintegration cross section is derived. The astrophysical rates for the reaction alpha + alpha + n -> 9Be + gamma and the reverse photodisintegration of 9Be are calculated. The new reaction rate for alpha + alpha + n -> 9Be + gamma is compared with previous estimations.
The shell model embedded in the continuum is applied to calculate the astrophysical S-factor and the reaction rate for the radiative proton capture reaction 17F(p,gamma)18Ne. The dominant contribution to the cross-section at very low energies is due to M1 transitions J_i^pi = 2^+ --> J_f^pi = 2_1^+ whose magnitude is controlled by a weakly bound 2_2^+ state at the excitation energy E_x = 3.62 MeV.
We present a Monte Carlo calculation of the astrophysical rate of the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne reaction based on an evaluation of published experimental data. By considering the likelihood distributions of individual resonance parameters derived from measurements, estimates of upper and lower limits on the reaction rate at the 99.73% confidence level are derived in addition to the recommended, median value. These three reaction rates are used as input for three separate calculations of Type I x-ray bursts using spherically symmetric, hydrodynamic simulations of an accreting neutron star. In this w…
We estimate the valence quark contributions for the gamma* Y -> Lambda* (Y=Lambda, Sigma0) electromagnetic transition form factors. We focus particularly on the case Lambda*=Lambda(1670) as an analog reaction with gamma* N -> N(1535). The results are compared with those obtained from chiral unitary model, where the Lambda* resonance is dynamically generated and thus the electromagnetic structure comes directly from the meson cloud excitation of the baryon ground states. The form factors for the case Y=Sigma0 in particular, depend crucially on the two real phase (sign) combination, a phase betw…
