Half-supersymmetric geometries of N=2 five-dimensional gauged supergravity have recently been fully classified using spinorial geometry techniques. We use this classification to determine all possible regular half-supersymmetric near-horizon geometries, assuming that all of the gauge-invariant spinor bilinears are regular at the horizon. Four geometries are found, two of which have been found previously in hep-th/0611351 and arXiv:0708.3695.
We investigate deformations of extremal near-horizon geometries in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory, including various topological terms, and also in D=11 supergravity. By linearizing the field equations and Bianchi identities over the compact spatial cross-sections of the near-horizon geometry, we prove that the moduli associated with such deformations are constrained by elliptic systems of PDEs. The moduli space of deformations of near-horizon geometries in these theories is therefore shown to be finite dimensional.
Extreme near-horizon geometries in D=11 supergravity preserving four supersymmetries are classified. It is shown that the Killing spinors fall into three possible orbits, corresponding to pairs of spinors defined on the spatial cross-sections of the horizon which have isotropy groups SU(3), G2, or SU(4). In each case, the conditions on the geometry and the 4-form flux are determined. The integrability conditions obtained from the Killing spinor equations are also investigated.
We give a description of supermembranes in nontrivial target-space geometries. A special class are the $AdS_4\times S^7$ and $AdS_7\times S^4$ spaces that have the maximal number of 32 supersymmetries.
We study topology-changing transitions in the space of higher-dimensional black hole solutions. Kol has proposed that these are conifold-type transitions controlled by self-similar double-cone geometries. We present an exact example of this phenomenon in the intersection between a black hole horizon and a cosmological deSitter horizon in D >= 6. We also describe local models for the critical geometries that control many transitions in the phase space of higher-dimensional black holes, such as the pinch-down of a topologically spherical black hole to a black ring or to a black p-sphere, or the …
I review some properties of D-branes in the SU(2) and SL(2,R) WZW models. I comment on a potential difficulty for the realization of `warped brane worlds' in string theory. This short note is based on a talk given at the Strings'01 conference in Mumbay.
We provide a classification of near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black holes of five-dimensional U(1)^3-gauged supergravity which admit two rotational symmetries. We find three possibilities: a topologically spherical horizon, an S^1 \times S^2 horizon and a toroidal horizon. The near-horizon geometry of the topologically spherical case turns out to be that of the most general known supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole of U(1)^3-gauged supergravity. The other two cases have constant scalars and only exist in particular regions of thi…
We identify all symmetry superalgebras $\mathfrak{g}$ of near horizon geometries of black holes with a Killing horizon, assuming the solution is smooth and that the spatial cross section of the event horizon is compact without boundary. This includes all warped AdS$_2$ backgrounds with the most general allowed fluxes in 10- and 11-dimensional supergravities. If the index of a particular Dirac operator vanishes, we find that the even symmetry subalgebra decomposes as $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus \mathfrak{t}_0$, where $\mathfrak{t}_0/\mathfrak{c}$ is the Lie algebra of a gr…
Collapsing shells form horizons, and when the curvature is small classical general relativity is believed to describe this process arbitrarily well. On the other hand, quantum information theory based (fuzzball/firewall) arguments suggest the existence of some structure at the black hole horizon. This structure can only form if classical general relativity stops being the correct description of the collapsing shell before it reaches the horizon size. We present strong evidence that classical general relativity can indeed break down prematurely, by explicitly computing the quantum tunneling amp…
We develop a new hybrid WKB technique to compute boundary-to-boundary scalar Green functions in asymptotically-AdS backgrounds in which the scalar wave equation is separable and is explicitly solvable in the asymptotic region. We apply this technique to a family of six-dimensional $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS asymptotically AdS$_3\,\times\,$S$^3$ horizonless geometries that have the same charges and angular momenta as a D1-D5-P black hole with a large horizon area. At large and intermediate distances, these geometries very closely approximate the extremal-BTZ$\,\times\,$S$^3$ geometry of the black hole, …
We study the classical stability of a class of S-brane geometries having cosmological horizons. By considering the perturbations of the metric in these geometries we establish that their horizons are unstable in the sense that an observer trying to cross the horizon experiences an infinite flux of radiation at the instant of crossing. The backreaction of this radiation is likely to convert the horizons into curvature singularities, similar to the instability of the internal Cauchy horizon of the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We also compute the particle production by the time-dependent fields…
Microstate geometries in string theory replace the black-hole horizon with a smooth geometric "cap" at the horizon scale. In geometries constructed using superstratum technology, this cap has the somewhat surprising property that induces very large tidal deformations on infalling observers that are far away from it. We find that this large-distance amplification of the tidal effects is also present in horizonless microstate geometries constructed as bubbling solutions, but can be tamed by suitably arranging the bubbles to reduce the strength of some of the gravitational multipole moments. Howe…
EVH black holes are Extremal black holes with Vanishing Horizon area, where vanishing of horizon area is a result of having a vanishing one-cycle on the horizon. We prove three theorems regarding near horizon geometry of EVH black hole solutions to generic Einstein gravity theories in diverse dimensions. These generic gravity theories are Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-Lambda theories, and gauged or ungauged supergravity theories with U(1) Maxwell fields. Our three theorems are: (1) The near horizon geometry of any EVH black hole has a three dimensional maximally symmetric subspace. (2) If the energ…
We report on recent advances in the study of critical points of the ``black hole effective potential'' V_{BH} (usually named \textit{attractors}) of N=2, d=4 supergravity coupled to n_{V} Abelian vector multiplets, in an asymptotically flat extremal black hole background described by 2n_{V}+2 dyonic charges and (complex) scalar fields which are coordinates of an n_{V}-dimensional Special Kahler manifold.
We show that the symmetries of effective D-string actions in constant dilaton backgrounds are directly related to homothetic motions of the background metric. In presence of such motions, there are infinitely many nonlinearly realized rigid symmetries forming a loop (or loop like) algebra. Near horizon (AdS) D3 and D1+D5 backgrounds are discussed in detail and shown to provide 2d interacting field theories with infinite conformal symmetry.
Near horizon geometries have been widely studied, and have found many applications. Certain static, near horizon geometries are now understood to be bulk duals to CFTs with static scale-invariant sources under the AdS/CFT correspondence. However, static near-horizon geometries aren't just scale-invariant, they have extra `enhanced' symmetry. This means that they can only be the bulk duals for a special class of static, scale-invariant sources that share this enhanced symmetry. The purpose of this paper is to consider bulk duals for more generic static, scale-invariant sources, without this ext…
We show that any extreme black hole with an orthogonally transitive abelian isometry group has a near-horizon geometry with enhanced symmetry. We also point out a simple proof of the horizon topology theorem of Galloway and Schoen for degenerate horizons.
We prove that $D\geq 5$ dimensional stationary, non-static near horizon geometries with (D-3) rotational symmetries subject to the vacuum Einstein equations including a cosmological constant cannot have toroidal horizon topology. In D=4 dimensions the same result is obtained under the assumption of a non-negative cosmological constant.
We study hidden symmetries, the symmetries associated with the Killing tensors, of the near horizon geometry of odd-dimensional Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in two limits: generic extremal and extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limits. Starting from Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in ellipsoidal coordinates which admits integrable geodesic equations, we obtain the near horizon extremal/EVH geometries and their principal and Killing tensors by taking the near horizon limit. We explicitly demonstrate that geodesic equations are separable and integrable on theses near horizon geometries. We also compute the con…
We prove uniqueness of the near-horizon geometries arising from degenerate Kerr black holes within the collection of nearby vacuum near-horizon geometries.
In five dimensions, we consider a model described by the Einstein gravity with a source given by a scalar field and various Abelian gauge fields with dilatonic-like couplings. For this model, we are able to construct two dyonic black holes whose three-dimensional horizons are modeled by two nontrivial homogeneous Thurston's geometries. The dyonic solutions are of Lifshitz type with an arbitrary value of the dynamical exponent. In fact, the first gauge field ensures the anisotropy asymptotic while the remaining Abelian fields sustain the electric and magnetic charges. Using the Hamiltonian form…
We consider stationary extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We determine all non-static axisymmetric near-horizon geometries (with non-toroidal horizon topology) and all static near-horizon geometries for black holes of this kind. This allows us to deduce that the most general near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically globally AdS(4) rotating extremal black hole, is the near-horizon limit of extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS(4). We also identify the subset of near-horizon geometries which are supersymmetric. Finally, …
Any spacetime containing a degenerate Killing horizon, such as an extremal black hole, possesses a well-defined notion of a near-horizon geometry. We review such near-horizon geometry solutions in a variety of dimensions and theories in a unified manner. We discuss various general results including horizon topology and near-horizon symmetry enhancement. We also discuss the status of the classification of near-horizon geometries in theories ranging from vacuum gravity to Einstein-Maxwell theory and supergravity theories. Finally, we discuss applications to the classification of extremal black h…
We consider two families of D1-D5-P states and find their gravity duals. In each case the geometries are found to `cap off' smoothly near r=0; thus there are no horizons or closed timelike curves. These constructions support the general conjecture that the interior of black holes is nontrivial all the way up to the horizon.
We consider the classification of near-horizon geometries in a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and uncharged scalars in four and five dimensions, with one and two commuting rotational symmetries respectively. Assuming that the theory of gravity reduces to a 3d non-linear sigma model (as is typically the case for ungauged supergravities), we show that the functional form of any such near-horizon geometry may be determined. As an example we apply this to five dimensional minimal supergravity. We also construct an example of a five parameter near-horizon g…
We assumed a stress tensor is necessary on the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole or on the Rindler horizon for the Israel matching conditions to be satisfied. We found the surface energy density $ρ_{s}$ is vanishing but the surface pressure $p_{s}$ equals $1/16πl$ in both cases, where $l$ is the proper distance from the horizon. The junction relations are applied both for $r =$ const. and $T =$ const. surfaces, with the same results for the surface parameters $ρ_{s}$ and $p_{s}$. We emphasize the nonstatic feature of the spacetimes beyond the corresponding horizons.
Associated to every stationary extremal black hole is a unique near-horizon geometry, itself a solution of the field equations. These latter spacetimes are more tractable to analyze and most importantly, retain properties of the original black hole which are intrinsic to the event horizon. After reviewing general features of near-horizon geometries, such as SO(2,1) symmetry enhancement, I report on recent work on stationary, charged extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions and present a classification of near-horiz…
In the LLM bubbling geometries, we compute the entropies of black holes and estimate their "horizon" sizes from the fuzzball conjecture, based on coarse-graining on the gravity side. The differences of black hole microstates cannot be seen by classical observations. Conversely, by counting the possible deformations of the geometry which are not classically detectable, we can calculate the entropy. We carry out this method on the black holes of the LLM bubbling geometries, such as the superstar, and obtain the same result as was derived by coarse-graining directly on the CFT (fermion) side. Sec…
We prove that the near-horizon geometries of minimal gauged five-dimensional supergravity preserve at least half of the supersymmetry. If the near-horizon geometries preserve a larger fraction, then they are locally isometric to $AdS_5$. Our proof is based on Lichnerowicz type theorems for two horizon Dirac operators constructed from the supercovariant connection restricted to the horizon sections, and on an application of the index theorem. An application is that all half-supersymmetric five-dimensional horizons admit an $\mathfrak{sl}(2, {\mathbb{R}})$ symmetry subalgebra.
We investigate the structure of smooth and horizonless microstate geometries in six dimensions, in the spirit of the five-dimensional analysis of Gibbons and Warner [arXiv:1305.0957]. In six dimensions, which is the natural setting for horizonless geometries with the charges of the D1-D5-P black hole, the natural black objects are strings and there are no Chern-Simons terms for the tensor gauge fields. However, we still find that the same reasoning applies: in absence of horizons, there can be no smooth stationary solutions without non-trivial topology. We use topological arguments to describe…
For a given attractor black hole with generic D6-D4-D2-D0-charges in four dimensions we identify the set of supersymmetric branes, static or stationary in global coordinates, of the corresponding eleven-dimensional near horizon geometry. The set of these BPS states, which includes branes which partially or fully wrap the horizon, should play a role in understanding the partition function of black holes with D6-charges.
We study the gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar field perturbations on the near-horizon geometries of the even-dimensional extremal Myers-Perry black holes. By dimensional reduction, the perturbation equations are reduced to effective equations of motion in AdS$_2$. We find that some modes in the gravitational perturbations violate the Breitenlöhner-Freedman bound in AdS$_2$. This result suggests that the even-dimensional (near-)extremal Myers-Perry black holes are unstable against gravitational perturbations. We also discuss implications of our results to the Kerr-CFT correspondence.
We outline a systematic procedure to obtain horizonless microstate geometries that have the same charges as three-charge five-dimensional black holes with a macroscopically-large horizon area and an arbitrarily-small angular momentum. There are two routes through which such solutions can be constructed: using multi-center Gibbons-Hawking (GH) spaces or using superstratum technology. So far the only solutions corresponding to microstate geometries for black holes with no angular momentum have been obtained via superstrata, and multi-center Gibbons-Hawking spaces have been believed to give rise …
We classify under some assumptions the IIB black hole horizons with 5-form flux preserving more than 2 supersymmetries. We find that the spatial horizon sections with non-vanishing flux preserving 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric either to S^1 * S^3 * T^4 or to S^1 * S^3 * K_3 and the associated near horizon geometries are locally isometric to AdS_3 * S^3 * T^4 and AdS_3 * S^3 * K_3$, respectively. The near horizon geometries preserving more than 4 supersymmetries are locally isometric to R^{1,1} * T^8.
Recently certain non-supersymmetric solutions of type IIb supergravity were constructed [hep-th/0504181], which are everywhere smooth, have no horizons and are thought to describe certain non-BPS microstates of the D1-D5 system. We demonstrate that these solutions are all classically unstable. The instability is a generic feature of horizonless geometries with an ergoregion. We consider the endpoint of this instability and argue that the solutions decay to supersymmetric configurations. We also comment on the implications of the ergoregion instability for Mathur's `fuzzball' proposal.
We prove existence of all possible bi-axisymmetric near-horizon geometries of 5-dimensional minimal supergravity. These solutions possess the cross-sectional horizon topology $S^3$, $S^1\times S^2$, or $L(p,q)$ and come with prescribed electric charge, two angular momenta, and a dipole charge (in the ring case). Moreover, we establish uniqueness of these solutions up to an isometry of the symmetric space $G_{2(2)}/SO(4)$.
We consider the classification of static near-horizon geometries of stationary extremal (not necessarily BPS) black hole solutions of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a Chern-Simons term with coupling xi (with xi=1 corresponding to supergravity). Assuming the black holes have two rotational symmetries, we show that their near-horizon geometries are either the direct product AdS_3 X S^2 or a warped product of AdS_2 and compact 3d space. In the AdS_2 case we are able to classify all possible near-horizon geometries with no magnetic fields. There are two such solutions: the dir…
This is the written version of my talk at SUSY '98. It presents a geometric characterisation of the allowed near-horizon geometries of supersymmetric branes. We focus primarily on the M2-brane, but results for other branes (e.g., the D3-brane) are also presented. Some new examples are discussed.
We construct the first family of horizonless supergravity solutions that have the same mass, charges and angular momenta as general supersymmetric rotating D1-D5-P black holes in five dimensions. This family includes solutions with arbitrarily small angular momenta, deep within the regime of quantum numbers and couplings for which a large classical black hole exists. These geometries are well-approximated by the black-hole solution, and in particular exhibit the same near-horizon throat. Deep in this throat, the black-hole singularity is resolved into a smooth cap. We also identify the hologra…
We investigate dilaton-gravity models whose solutions contain a large portion of the static patch of dS$_2$. The thermodynamic properties of these theories are considered both in the presence of a finite Dirichlet wall, as well as for asymptotically near-AdS$_2$ boundaries. We show that under certain circumstances such geometries, including those endowed with an asymptotically near-AdS$_2$ boundary, can be locally and even globally thermodynamically stable within particular temperature regimes. First order phase transitions reminiscent of the Hawking-Page transition are discussed. For judiciou…
We classify all pseudo-supersymmetric near horizon geometries of extremal black holes in five dimensional de-Sitter supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. We find that there are three types of solution. The first type corresponds to the near-horizon geometry of extremal de Sitter BMPV black holes, and the spatial cross-section of the horizon is topologically S^3. The other two solutions cannot be embedded into the minimal de-Sitter supergravity theory, and correspond to near-horizon geometries for which the spatial cross-sections of the horizon are T^3 or S^1 * S^2.
We study massless geodesics near the photon-spheres of a large family of solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory in five dimensions, including BHs, naked singularities and smooth horizon-less JMaRT geometries obtained as six-dimensional uplifts of the five-dimensional solution. We find that a light ring of unstable photon orbits surrounding the mass center is always present, independently of the existence of a horizon or singularity. We compute the Lyapunov exponent, characterizing the chaotic behaviour of geodesics near the `photon-sphere' and the time decay of ring-down modes dominating the res…
The large N limit of D3-branes is expected to correspond to a superconformal field theory living on the boundary of the anti-de Sitter space appearing in the near-horizon geometry. Dualizing the D3-brane to a D-instanton, we show that this limit is equivalent to a type IIB S-duality. In both cases one effectively reaches the near-horizon geometry. This provides an alternative approach to an earlier derivation of the same result that makes use of the properties of a gravitational wave instead of the D-instanton.
Two charge BPS horizon free supergravity geometries are important in proposals for understanding black hole microstates. In this paper we construct a new class of geometries in the NS1-P system, corresponding to solitonic strings carrying fermionic as well as bosonic condensates. Such geometries are required to account for the full microscopic entropy of the NS1-P system. We then briefly discuss the properties of the corresponding geometries in the dual D1-D5 system.
We consider the near-horizon geometries of extremal, rotating black hole solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in four and five dimensions. We assume the existence of one rotational symmetry in 4d, two commuting rotational symmetries in 5d and in both cases non-toroidal horizon topology. In 4d we determine the most general near-horizon geometry of such a black hole, and prove it is the same as the near-horizon limit of the extremal Kerr-AdS(4) black hole. In 5d, without a cosmological constant, we determine all possible near-horizon geometries …
We explicitly construct all stationary, non-static, extremal near horizon geometries in $D$ dimensions that satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations, and that have $D-3$ commuting rotational symmetries. Our work generalizes [arXiv:0806.2051] by Kunduri and Lucietti, where such a classification had been given in $D=4,5$. But our method is different from theirs and relies on a matrix formulation of the Einstein equations. Unlike their method, this matrix formulation works for any dimension. The metrics that we find come in three families, with horizon topology $S^2 \times T^{D-4}$, or $S^3 \times T…
We construct the first known example of a near horizon supergravity solution for a pair of NS5-branes, intersecting on R^{1,3} and localised in all directions except a single transverse circle. We do this by establishing an explicit map between the conifold metric and the near horizon geometry of two intersecting NS5-branes, clarifying and correcting a number of open issues in the literature en route. Our technique is general in nature and may be applied to a whole class of 1/4-BPS five-brane webs and their geometric duals. These 1/4-BPS solutions may have an interesting holographic interpreta…
We construct several classes of worldvolume effective actions for black holes by integrating out spatial sections of the worldvolume geometry of asymptotically flat black branes. This provides a generalisation of the blackfold approach for higher-dimensional black holes and yields a map between different effective theories, which we exploit by obtaining new hydrodynamic and elastic transport coefficients via simple integrations. Using Euclidean minimal surfaces in order to decouple the fluid dynamics on different sections of the worldvolume, we obtain local effective theories for ultraspinning…
Based on the work of Heemskerk, Marolf, Polchinski and Sully (HMPS), we study the reconstruction of operators behind causal horizons in time dependent geometries obtained by acting with shockwaves on pure states or thermal states. These geometries admit a natural basis of gauge invariant operators, namely those geodesically dressed to the boundary along geodesics which emanate from the bifurcate horizon at constant Rindler time. We outline a procedure for obtaining operators behind the causal horizon but inside the entanglement wedge by exploiting the equality between bulk and boundary time ev…
We report on a classification of supersymmetric solutions to 11D supergravity with $SO(2,2) \times SO(3)$ isometry, which are AdS/CFT dual to 2D CFTs with $\mathcal{N} = (0,4)$ supersymmetry. We recover the Maldacena, Strominger, Witten (MSW) near-horizon with small superconformal symmetry and identify a class of $AdS_3 \times S^2 \times S^2 \times CY_2$ geometries with emergent large superconformal symmetry. This exhausts known compact geometries. Compactification of M-theory on $CY_2$ results in a vacuum of 7D supergravity with large superconformal symmetry, providing a candidate near-horizo…
We compute the length of spacelike geodesics anchored at opposite sides of certain double-sided flow geometries in two dimensions. These geometries are asymptotically anti-de Sitter but they admit either a de Sitter or a black hole event horizon in the interior. While in the geometries with black hole horizons, the geodesic length always exhibit linear growth at late times, in the flow geometries with de Sitter horizons, geodesics with finite length only exist for short times of the order of the inverse temperature and they do not exhibit linear growth. We comment on the implications of these …
Using the Schwarzschild-type coordinates in stead of the global ones we reconstruct the classical rotating closed string solutions in the AdS*5 x S*5 backgrounds. They are explicitly described by the Jacobi elliptic and trigonometrical functions of worldsheet coordinates. We study the orbiting closed string configurations in the near-horizon geometries of Dp, NS1 and NS5 branes, and derive the energy and spin of them, whose relation takes a simple form for short strings. Specially in the D5 and NS5 backgrounds we have a linear relation that the energy of the point-like string is proportional t…
The near horizon geometries are usually constructed by implementing a specific limit to a given extreme black hole configuration. Their salient feature is that the isometry group includes the conformal subgroup SO(2,1). In this work, we turn the logic around and use the conformal invariants for constructing Ricci-flat metrics in d=4 and d=5 where the vacuum Einstein equations reduce to a coupled set of ordinary differential equations. In four dimensions the analysis can be carried out in full generality and the resulting metric describes the d=4 near horizon Kerr-NUT black hole. In five dimens…
We give a simple recipe for computing dissipation and fluctuations (commutator and anti-commutator correlation functions) for non-equilibrium black hole geometries. The recipe formulates Hawking radiation as an initial value problem, and is suitable for numerical work. We show how to package the fluctuation and dissipation near the event horizon into correlators on the stretched horizon. These horizon correlators determine the bulk and boundary field theory correlation functions. In addition, the horizon correlators are the components of a horizon effective action which provides a quantum gene…
We classify all pseudo-supersymmetric extremal near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional de-Sitter supergravity. It is shown that the only such near-horizon geometry is the near-horizon geometry of the de-Sitter BMPV solution, and hence there are no regular extremal pseudo-supersymmetric asymptotically de-Sitter black rings.
For the 2-charge extremal holes in string theory we show that the Bekenstein entropy obtained from the area of the stretched horizon has a statistical interpretation as a `coarse graining entropy': different microstates give geometries that differ near r=0 and the stretched horizon cuts off the metric at r=b where these geometries start to differ.
