We construct the first known example of a near horizon supergravity solution for a pair of NS5-branes, intersecting on R^{1,3} and localised in all directions except a single transverse circle. We do this by establishing an explicit map between the conifold metric and the near horizon geometry of two intersecting NS5-branes, clarifying and correcting a number of open issues in the literature en route. Our technique is general in nature and may be applied to a whole class of 1/4-BPS five-brane webs and their geometric duals. These 1/4-BPS solutions may have an interesting holographic interpretation in terms of little string theory.
This paper is a continuation of hepth/0507224 where open topological B-models describing D-branes on 2-cycles of local Calabi--Yau geometries with conical singularities were studied. After a short review, the paper expands in particular on two aspects: the gauge fixing problem in the reduction to two dimensions and the quantum matrix model solutions.
We study open B-model representing D-branes on 2-cycles of local Calabi--Yau geometries. To this end we work out a reduction technique linking D-branes partition functions and multi-matrix models in the case of conifold geometries so that the matrix potential is related to the complex moduli of the conifold. We study the geometric engineering of the multi-matrix models and focus on two-matrix models with bilinear couplings. We show how to solve this models in an exact way, without resorting to the customary saddle point/large N approximation. The method consists of solving the quantum equation…
We consider the M-theory lifts of configurations of type IIA D6-branes intersecting at angles. In supersymmetry preserving cases, the lifts correspond to special holonomy geometries, like conifolds and $G_2$ holonomy singularities. Transitions in which D6-branes approach and recombine lift to topology changing transition in these geometries. In some instances non-supersymmetric configurations can be reliably lifted, leading to the same topological manifolds, but endowed with non-supersymmetric metrics. In these cases the phase transitions are driven dynamically, due to instabilities localized …
Conifold geometries have recieved a lot of attention in string theory and string-inspired cosmology recently, in particular the Klebanov-Strassler background that is known as the "warped throat". It is our intention in this article to give a pedagogical explanation for the singularity resolution in this geometry and emphasise its connection to geometric transitions. The first part focuses on the gauge theory dual to the Klebanov-Strassler background, which we also explain from a T-dual intersecting branes scenario. We then make the connection to the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture for open/closed st…
In this paper, we extend our previous analysis concerning the formation of inhomogeneous condensates in strongly-coupled fermion effective field theories on curved spaces and include the case of conifold geometries that represent the simplest tractable case of manifolds with curvature singularities. In the set-up considered here, by keeping the genuine thermodynamical temperature constant, we may single out the role that curvature effects play on the breaking/restoration of chiral symmetry and on the appearance of inhomogeneous phases. The first goal of this paper is to construct a general exp…
Continuing the programme of constructing the backreacted solution corresponding to smeared anti-D3 branes in the warped deformed conifold, we solve analytically the equations governing the space of first-order deformations around this solution. We express the results in terms of at most three nested integrals. These are the simplest expressions for the space of $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \ZZ_2$-invariant deformations, in which the putative solution for smeared anti-D3 branes must live. We also explain why one cannot claim to identify this solution without fully relating the coefficients of the…
In this paper we obtain new solutions of Type IIA and massive Type IIA supergravity. These solutions are the result of implementing a non-abelian T-duality along the internal $SU(2)$ isometries of several D3-brane configurations on the resolved conifold, studied by Pando Zayas and Tseytlin. We first study the pure NS resolved conifold solution, then we add fluxes by placing a stack of D3-branes at the tip of the resolved conifold and finally we consider the system of regular and fractional D3-branes at the tip. We present the non-abelian T-duals associated with these backgrounds and study thei…
We search for Ricci flat, Kähler geometries which are asymptotic to the cone whose base is the space T^{11} by working out covariantly constant spinor equations. The metrics we find are singular in the interior and introducing parallel D3-branes does not form regular event horizons cloaking the naked singularities. We also work out a supersymmetric ansatz involving only the metric and the 5-form field corresponding to D3-branes wrapping over the non-trivial 2-cycle of T^{11}. We find a system of first-order equations and argue that the solution has an event horizon and the ADM mass per unit vo…
We study topology-changing transitions in the space of higher-dimensional black hole solutions. Kol has proposed that these are conifold-type transitions controlled by self-similar double-cone geometries. We present an exact example of this phenomenon in the intersection between a black hole horizon and a cosmological deSitter horizon in D >= 6. We also describe local models for the critical geometries that control many transitions in the phase space of higher-dimensional black holes, such as the pinch-down of a topologically spherical black hole to a black ring or to a black p-sphere, or the …
We analyze properties of non-supersymmetric isometry-preserving perturbations to the infrared region of the warped deformed conifold, i.e. the Klebanov Strassler solution. We discuss both perturbations that "squash" the geometry, so that the internal space is no longer conformally Calabi-Yau, and perturbations that do not squash the geometry. Among the perturbations that we discuss is the solution that describes the linearized near-tip backreaction of a smeared collection of anti-D3-branes positioned in the deep infrared. Such a configuration is a candidate gravity dual of a non-supersymmetric…
We associate to the resolved conifold an affine special Kähler (ASK) manifold of complex dimension 1, and an instanton corrected hyperkähler (HK) manifold of complex dimension 2. We describe these geometries explicitly, and show that the instanton corrected HK geometry realizes an Ooguri-Vafa-like smoothing of the semi-flat HK metric associated to the ASK geometry. On the other hand, the instanton corrected HK geometry associated to the resolved conifold can be described in terms of a twistor family of two holomorphic Darboux coordinates. We study a certain conformal limit of the twistor coord…
Using DBI inflation as an example, we demonstrate that the detailed geometry of warped compactification can leave an imprint on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We compute CMB observables for DBI inflation in a generic class of warped throats and find that the results (such as the sign of the tilt of the scalar perturbations and its running) depend sensitively on the precise shape of the warp factor. In particular, we analyze the warped deformed conifold and find that the results can differ from those of other warped geometries, even when these geometries approximate well the exact metri…
I study the enhancon mechanism for fractional D-branes in conifold and orbifold backgrounds and show how it can resolve the ``repulson'' singularity of these geometries. In particular I show that the consistency of the excision process requires that the interior space be not empty.
We study the enhancon mechanism for fractional D-branes in conifold and orbifold backgrounds and show how it can resolve the repulson singularity of these geometries. In particular we show that the consistency of the excision process requires that the interior space be not empty. In the orbifold case, we exploit the boundary state formalism to obtain an explicit conformal description and emphasize the non trivial role of the volume of the internal manifold.
In this paper we refine a conjecture relating the time-dependent size of an Einstein-Rosen bridge to the computational complexity of the of the dual quantum state. Our refinement states that the complexity is proportional to the spatial volume of the ERB. More precisely, up to an ambiguous numerical coefficient, we propose that the complexity is the regularized volume of the largest codimension one surface crossing the bridge, divided by $G_N l_{AdS}$. We test this conjecture against a wide variety of spherically symmetric shock wave geometries in different dimensions. We find detailed agreeme…
We study long-distance singularities governing different physical quantities involving massless partons in perturbative QCD by using factorisation in terms of Wilson-line correlators. By isolating the process-independent hard-collinear singularities from quark and gluon form factors, and identifying these with the ones governing the elastic limit of the perturbative Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) -- $δ(1-x)$ in the large-$x$ limit of DGLAP splitting functions -- we extract the anomalous dimension controlling soft singularities of the PDFs, verifying that it admits Casimir scaling. We the…
We study propagation of D0-brane in two-dimensional Lorentzian black hole backgrounds by the method of boundary conformal field theory of SL(2,R)/U(1) supercoset at level k. Typically, such backgrounds arise as near-horizon geometries of k coincident non-extremal NS5-branes, where 1/k measures curvature of the backgrounds in string unit and hence size of string worldsheet effects. At classical level, string worldsheet effects are suppressed and D0-brane propagation in the Lorentzian black hole geometry is simply given by the Wick rotation of D1-brane contour in the Euclidean black hole geometr…
Motivated by recent developments in the understanding of the connection between five branes on resolved geometries and the corresponding generalizations of complex deformations in the context of the warped resolved deformed conifold, we consider the construction of five branes solutions on the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} spaces. We establish the existence of supersymmetric five branes solutions wrapped on two-cycles of the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} in the probe limit. We then use calibration techniques to begin the construction of fully back-reacted five branes; we present an Ansatz and the co…
Using very weak criteria for what may constitute a noncommutative geometry, I show that a pseudo-Riemannian manifold can only be smoothly deformed into noncommutative geometries if certain geometric obstructions vanish. These obstructions can be expressed as a system of partial differential equations relating the metric and the Poisson structure that describes the noncommutativity. I illustrate this by computing the obstructions for well known examples of noncommutative geometries and quantum groups. These rigid conditions may cast doubt on the idea of noncommutatively deformed space-time.
We study the near horizon 2d gravity theory which captures the near extremal thermodynamics of BTZ with excess mass $δM$ and excess angular momentum $δJ =\mathcal{L}\, δM$ over extremality. We find that the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory is able to capture such departures from extremality with an additional parameter $\mathcal{L}$ relating it to the near extremal BTZ configuration. We are able to show this by obtaining new simultaneous near horizon near extremal limits of the BTZ geometry parametrized by $\mathcal{L}$. The resulting Jackiw-Teitelboim theory captures the near extremal thermodynamics …
Macroscopic entropy of an extremal black hole is expected to be determined completely by its near horizon geometry. Thus two black holes with identical near horizon geometries should have identical macroscopic entropy, and the expected equality between macroscopic and microscopic entropies will then imply that they have identical degeneracies of microstates. An apparent counterexample is provided by the 4D-5D lift relating BMPV black hole to a four dimensional black hole. The two black holes have identical near horizon geometries but different microscopic spectrum. We suggest that this discrep…
The near-horizon limit of the extremal (weakly) isolated horizon is obtained under the Bondi-like coordinates. For the vacuum case, explicit coordinate transformation relating the near-horizon metric under the Bondi-like coordinates and the standard Poincaré-type or global near-horizon metric of the extremal Kerr black hole is found, which shows that the two geometries are the same. Combined with the known thermodynamics of the (weakly) isolated horizon, it is argued that the Kerr/CFT correspondence can be generalized to the case of a large class of non-stationary extremal black holes.
