A code C is Z2Z4-additive if the set of coordinates can be partitioned into two subsets X and Y such that the punctured code of C by deleting the coordinates outside X (respectively, Y) is a binary linear code (respectively, a quaternary linear code). In this paper, the rank and dimension of the kernel for Z2Z4-linear codes, which are the corresponding binary codes of Z2Z4-additive codes, are studied. The possible values of these two parameters for Z2Z4-linear codes, giving lower and upper bounds, are established. For each possible rank r between these bounds, the construction of a Z2Z4-linear code with rank r is given. Equivalently, for each possible dimension of the kernel k, the construction of a Z2Z4-linear code with dimension of the kernel k is given. Finally, the bounds on the rank, once the kernel dimension is fixed, are established and the construction of a Z2Z4-additive code for each possible pair (r,k) is given.
The ranks and kernels of generalized Hadamard matrices are studied. It is proven that any generalized Hadamard matrix $H(q,λ)$ over $F_q$, $q>3$, or $q=3$ and $\gcd(3,λ)\not =1$, generates a self-orthogonal code. This result puts a natural upper bound on the rank of the generalized Hadamard matrices. Lower and upper bounds are given for the dimension of the kernel of the corresponding generalized Hadamard codes. For specific ranks and dimensions of the kernel within these bounds, generalized Hadamard codes are constructed.
A code $C$ is called $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear if it is the Gray image of a $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-additive code. For any prime number $p$ larger than $3$, the bounds of the rank of $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear codes are given. For each value of the rank and the pairs of rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\mathbb{Z}_p\mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear codes, we give detailed construction of the corresponding codes. Finally, as an example, the rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\mathbb{Z}_5\mathbb{Z}_{25}$-linear codes are studied.
A subset of a vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is $K$-additive if it is a linear space over the subfield $K\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$. Let $q=p^e$, $p$ prime, and $e>1$. Bounds on the rank and dimension of the kernel of generalised Hadamard (GH) codes which are $\mathbb{F}_p$-additive are established. For specific ranks and dimensions of the kernel within these bounds, $\mathbb{F}_p$-additive GH codes are constructed. Moreover, for the case $e=2$, it is shown that the given bounds are tight and it is possible to construct an $\mathbb{F}_p$-additive GH code for all allowable ranks and dimensions of t…
Given two binary codes of length n, using Plotkin construction we obtain a code of length 2n. The construction works for linear and nonlinear codes. For the linear case, it is straightforward to see that the dimension of the final code is the sum of the dimensions of the starting codes. For nonlinear codes, the rank and the dimension of the kernel are standard mesures of linearity. In this report, we prove that both parameters are also the sum of the corresponding ones of the starting codes.
A code $C$ is called $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear if it is the Gray image of a $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-additive code, where $p>2$ is prime. In this paper, the rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear codes are studied. Two bounds of the rank of a $\Z_3\Z_{9}$-linear code and the dimension of the kernel of a $\Z_p\Z_{p^2}$-linear code are given, respectively. For each value of these bounds, we give detailed construction of the corresponding code. Finally, pairs of rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\Z_3\Z_{9}$-linear codes are also considered.
A code $C = Φ(\mathcal{C})$ is called $\mathbb{Z}_p \mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-linear if it's the Gray image of the $\mathbb{Z}_p \mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-additive code $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, the rank and the dimension of the kernel of $\mathcal{C}$ are studied. Both of the codes $\langle Φ(\mathcal{C}) \rangle$ and $\ker(Φ(\mathcal{C}))$ are proven $\mathbb{Z}_p \mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-additive cyclic codes, and their generator polynomials are determined. Finally, accurate values of rank and the dimension of the kernel of some classes of $\mathbb{Z}_p \mathbb{Z}_{p^2}$-additive cyclic codes are considered.
Code decompositions (a.k.a code nestings) are used to design good binary polar code kernels. The proposed kernels are in general non-linear and show a better rate of polarization under successive cancelation decoding, than the ones suggested by Korada et al., for the same kernel dimensions. In particular, kernels of sizes 14, 15 and 16 are constructed and shown to provide polarization rates better than any binary kernel of such sizes.
For each rank metric code $\mathcal{C}\subseteq \mathbb{K}^{m\times n}$, we associate a translation structure, the kernel of which is shown to be invariant with respect to the equivalence on rank metric codes. When $\mathcal{C}$ is $\mathbb{K}$-linear, we also propose and investigate other two invariants called its middle nucleus and right nucleus. When $\mathbb{K}$ is a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $\mathcal{C}$ is a maximum rank distance code with minimum distance $d<\min\{m,n\}$ or $\gcd(m,n)=1$, the kernel of the associated translation structure is proved to be $\mathbb{F}_q$. Furthermo…
Multi-kernel polar codes have recently been proposed to construct polar codes of lengths different from powers of two. Decoder implementations for multi-kernel polar codes need to account for this feature, that becomes critical in memory management. We propose an efficient, generalized memory management framework for implementation of successivecancellation decoding of multi-kernel polar codes. It can be used on many types of hardware architectures and different flavors of SC decoding algorithms. We illustrate the proposed solution for small kernel sizes, and give complexity estimates for vari…
We propose to reduce the decoding complexity of polar codes with non-Arikan kernels by employing a (near) ML decoding algorithm for the codes generated by kernel rows. A generalization of the order statistics algorithm is presented for soft decoding of Reed-Solomon codes. Algebraic properties of the Reed-Solomon code are exploited to increase the reprocessing order. The obtained algorithm is used as a building block to obtain a decoder for polar codes with Reed-Solomon kernel.
A Z2Z4-additive code C subset of Z_2^alpha x Z_4^beta is called cyclic if the set of coordinates can be partitioned into two subsets, the set of Z_2 and the set of Z_4 coordinates, such that any cyclic shift of the coordinates of both subsets leaves the code invariant. Let Phi(C) be the binary Gray image of C. We study the rank and the dimension of the kernel of a Z2Z4-additive cyclic code C, that is, the dimensions of the binary linear codes <Phi(C)> and ker(Phi(C)). We give upper and lower bounds for these parameters. It is known that the codes <Phi(C)> and ker(Phi(C)) are binary images of Z…
A decoding algorithm for polar codes with binary 16$\times$16 kernels with polarization rate 0.51828 and scaling exponents 3.346 and 3.450 is presented. The proposed approach exploits the relationship of the considered kernels and the Arikan matrix to significantly reduce the decoding complexity without any performance loss. Simulation results show that polar (sub)codes with 16$\times$16 kernels can outperform polar codes with Arikan kernel, while having lower decoding complexity.
In this paper, we investigate a novel family of polar codes based on multi-kernel constructions, proving that this construction actually polarizes. To this end, we derive a new and more general proof of polarization, which gives sufficient conditions for kernels to polarize. Finally, we derive the convergence rate of the multi-kernel construction and relate it to the convergence rate of each of the constituent kernels.
In this paper, we modify polar codes constructed with some 2^t x 2^t polarization kernels to reduce the time complexity of the window decoding. This modification is based on the permutation of the columns of the kernels. This method is applied to some of the kernels constructed in the literature of size 16 and 32, with different error exponents and scaling exponents such as eNBCH kernel. It is shown that this method reduces the complexity of the window decoding significantly without affecting the performance.
A reduced complexity algorithm is presented for computing the log-likelihood ratios arising in the successive cancellation decoder for polar codes with large kernels of arbitrary dimension. The proposed algorithm exploits recursive trellis representation of the codes generated by submatrices of the polarization kernel, and enables codes based on large kernels to provide better performance compared to the codes based on Arikan kernel with the same decoding complexity.
In this paper, we show some applications of algebraic curves to the construction of kernels of polar codes over a discrete memoryless channel which is symmetric w.r.t the field operations. We will also study the minimum distance of the polar codes proposed, their duals and the exponents of the matrices used for defining them. All the restrictions that we make to our curves will be accomplished by the so-called Castle Curves.
In this paper, we propose a new polar code construction by employing kernels of different sizes in the Kronecker product of the transformation matrix, thus generalizing the original construction by Arikan. The proposed multi-kernel polar code allows for more flexibility in terms of the code length, moreover allowing for various new design principles. We describe in detail encoding as well as successive cancellation (SC) decoding and SC list (SCL) decoding, and we provide a novel design method for the frozen set that allows to optimise the performance under list decoding, as opposed to original…
In this paper, we propose a construction for multi-kernel polar codes based on the maximization of the minimum distance. Compared to the original construction based on density evolution, our new design shows particular advantages for short code lengths, where the polarization effect has less impact on the performance than the distances of the code. We introduce and compute the minimum-distance profile and provide a simple greedy algorithm for the code design. Compared to state-of-the-art punctured or shortened Arikan polar codes, multi-kernel polar codes with our new design show significantly …
In this paper, code decompositions (a.k.a. code nestings) are used to design binary polarization kernels. The proposed kernels are in general non-linear. They provide a better polarization exponent than the previously known kernels of the same dimensions. In particular, non-linear kernels of dimensions 14, 15, and 16 are constructed and are shown to have optimal asymptotic error-correction performance. The optimality is proved by showing that the exponents of these kernels achieve a new upper bound that is developed in this paper.
A generalization of the polar coding scheme called mixed-kernels is introduced. This generalization exploits several homogeneous kernels over alphabets of different sizes. An asymptotic analysis of the proposed scheme shows that its polarization properties are strongly related to the ones of the constituent kernels. Simulation of finite length instances of the scheme indicate their advantages both in error correction performance and complexity compared to the known polar coding structures.
Polar codes based on $2\times2$ non-binary kernels are discussed in this work. The kernel over $\text{GF}(q)$ is selected by maximizing the polarization effect and using Monte-Carlo simulation. Belief propagation (BP) and successive cancellation (SC) based decoding algorithms are extended to non-binary codes. Additionally, a successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding with a pruned tree is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed decoder performs very close to a conventional SCL decoder with significantly lower complexity.
A shortening method for large polarization kernels is presented, which results in shortened kernels with the highest error exponent if applied to kernels of size up to 32. It uses lower and upper bounds on partial distances for quick elimination of unsuitable shortening patterns. The proposed algorithm is applied to some kernels of sizes 16 and 32 to obtain shortened kernels of sizes from 9 to 31. These kernels are used in mixed-kernel polar codes of various lengths. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of polar codes with shortened large kernels compared with shortened and punctured Ar…
We propose a generalized construction for binary polar codes based on mixing multiple kernels of different sizes in order to construct polar codes of block lengths that are not only powers of integers. This results in a multi kernel polar code with very good performance while the encoding complexity remains low and the decoding follows the same general structure as for the original Arikan polar codes. The construction provides numerous practical advantages as more code lengths can be achieved without puncturing or shortening. We observe numerically that the error-rate performance of our constr…
The kernel-block rank profiles of the $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear and the $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard codes, and a complete classification of the $\mathbb{Z}_2\mathbb{Z}_4\mathbb{Z}_8$-linear Hadamard codes
The $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}^n_{2^s}$, and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$. A $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard code is a binary Hadamard code which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-additive code. It is known that the dimension of the kernel can be used to give a complete classification of the $\mathbb{Z}_4$-linear Hadamard codes. In this paper, the kernel of $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-linear Hadamard codes and its dimension are established for $s > 2$. Moreover, we prove that this invariant only…
In this work we develop a geometric approach to the study of rank metric codes. Using this method, we introduce a simpler definition for generalized rank weight of linear codes. We give a complete classification of constant rank weight code and we give their generalized rank weights.
A method for efficiently successive cancellation (SC) decoding of polar codes with high-dimensional linear binary kernels (HDLBK) is presented and analyzed. We devise a $l$-expressions method which can obtain simplified recursive formulas of SC decoder in likelihood ratio form for arbitrary linear binary kernels to reduce the complexity of corresponding SC decoder. By considering the bit-channel transition probabilities $W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|0)$ and $W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|1)$ separately, a $W$-expressions method is proposed to further reduce the complexity of HDLBK based SC decoder. For a $m\…
The $\Z_{2^s}$-additive codes are subgroups of $\Z^n_{2^s}$, and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\Z_2$ and $\Z_4$. A $\Z_{2^s}$-linear code is a binary code which is the Gray map image of a $\Z_{2^s}$-additive code. We consider $\Z_{2^s}$-additive simplex codes of type $α$ and $β$, which are a generalization over $\Z_{2^s}$ of the binary simplex codes. These $\Z_{2^s}$-additive simplex codes are related to the $\Z_{2^s}$-additive Hadamard codes. In this paper, we use this relationship to establish the kernel of their binary images, under the Gray map, the $\Z_{2^s}$-linea…
Polar codes, introduced by Arikan, achieve the capacity of arbitrary binary-input discrete memoryless channel $W$ under successive cancellation decoding. Any such channel having capacity $I(W)$ and for any coding scheme allowing transmission at rate $R$, scaling exponent is a parameter which characterizes how fast gap to capacity decreases as a function of code length $N$ for a fixed probability of error. The relation between them is given by $N\geqslant α/(I(W)-R)^μ$. Scaling exponent for kernels of small size up to $L=8$ have been exhaustively found. In this paper, we consider product kernel…
Constant-dimension codes have recently received attention due to their significance to error control in noncoherent random network coding. In this paper, we show that constant-rank codes are closely related to constant-dimension codes and we study the properties of constant-rank codes. We first introduce a relation between vectors in $\mathrm{GF}(q^m)^n$ and subspaces of $\mathrm{GF}(q)^m$ or $\mathrm{GF}(q)^n$, and use it to establish a relation between constant-rank codes and constant-dimension codes. We then derive bounds on the maximum cardinality of constant-rank codes with given rank wei…
In this paper, we will employ the technique used in the proof of classical Singleton bound to derive upper bounds for rank metric codes and Ferrers diagram rank metric codes. These upper bounds yield the rank distance Singleton bound and an upper bound presented by Etzion and Silberstein respectively. Also we introduce generalized Ferrers diagram rank metric code which is a Ferrers diagram rank metric code where the underlying rank metric code is not necessarily linear. A new Singleton bound for generalized Ferrers diagram rank metric code is obtained using our technique.
Polar codes are a class of linear error correction codes which provably attain channel capacity with infinite codeword lengths. Finite length polar codes have been adopted into the 5th Generation 3GPP standard for New Radio, though their native length is limited to powers of 2. Utilizing multiple polarizing matrices increases the length flexibility of polar codes at the expense of a more complicated decoding process. Successive cancellation (SC) is the standard polar decoder and has time complexity $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ due to its sequential nature. However, some patterns in the frozen set m…
We prove that, for the binary erasure channel (BEC), the polar-coding paradigm gives rise to codes that not only approach the Shannon limit but do so under the best possible scaling of their block length as a~function of the gap to capacity. This result exhibits the first known family of binary codes that attain both optimal scaling and quasi-linear complexity of encoding and decoding. Our proof is based on the construction and analysis of binary polar codes with large kernels. When communicating reliably at rates within $\varepsilon > 0$ of capacity, the code length $n$ often scales as $O(1/\…
The tensor rank of some Gabidulin codes of small dimension is investigated. In particular, we determine the tensor rank of any rank metric code equivalent to an $8$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear generalized Gabidulin code in $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{4\times4}$. This shows that such a code is never minimum tensor rank. In this way, we detect the first infinite family of Gabidulin codes which are not minimum tensor rank.
We present the theory of rank-metric codes with respect to the 3-tensors that generate them. We define the generator tensor and the parity check tensor of a matrix code, and describe the properties of a code through these objects. We define the tensor rank of a code to be the tensor rank of its generating tensors, and propose that this quantity is a significant coding theoretic parameter. By a result on the tensor rank of Kruskal from the 1970s, the tensor rank of a rank-metric code of dimension $k$ and minimum rank distance $d$ is at least $k+d-1$. We call codes that meet this bound minimal t…
Polar codes have received growing attention in the past decade and have been selected as the coding scheme for the control channel in the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems. However, the conventional polar codes have only been constructed by binary (2x2) kernel which poses block length limitation to powers of 2. To attain more flexible block lengths, multi-kernel polar codes are proposed. In this paper, a combinational architecture for multi-kernel polar codes with high throughput is proposed based on successive cancellation decoding algorithm. The proposed scheme can decode …
