We report the results of magnetization, heat capacity and neutron scattering studies of LaVO3 single crystals. From the neutron diffraction studies, it was found that the compound is magnetically ordered with a C-type antiferromagnetic spin structure at about 136 K. In the vicinity of the ordering temperature, we also observed hysteresis in the neutron diffraction data measured on cooling and heating which indicates the first order nature of the phase transition. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, the inelastic neutron scattering studies reveal the presence of a temperature independent c axis spin-wave gap of about 6 meV which is similar to that previously reported for the sister compound YVO3.
We report the local (NMR) and bulk (magnetization and heat capacity) properties of the vanadium-based S=1/2 uniform spin chain compound Bi6V3O16(Bi4V2O10.66). In the low-temperature α phase, the magnetic ions (V4+) are arranged in one-dimensional chains. The magnetic susceptibility shows a broad maximum around 50 K signifying a short-range magnetic order. Heat capacity measurements also reveal low-dimensional magnetism. The 51V magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance measurements clearly show that the magnetic V4+ and nonmagnetic V5+ species are located on different crystallographic si…
We study kagome lattice antiferromagnets where the effects of easy axis single-ion anisotropy ($D$) dominates over the Heisenberg exchange $J$. For $S \ge 3/2$, virtual quantum fluctuations help lift the extensive classical degeneracy. We demonstrate the presence of a one-third magnetization plateau for a broad range of magnetic fields $J^3/D^2 \lesssim B \lesssim JS$ along the easy axis. The fully equilibriated system at low temperature on this plateau develops an unusual {\em nematic} order that breaks sublattice rotation symmetry but not translation symmetry--however, extremely slow dynamic…
We study the $S=1/2$ pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field. Using large scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for clusters up to $128$ spins, we find indications for a finite triplet gap, causing a threshold field to nonzero magnetization in the magnetization curve. We obtain a robust saturation field consistent with a magnon crystal, although the corresponding $5/6$ magnetization plateau is very slim and possibly unstable. Most remarkably, there is a pronounced and apparently robust $\frac 1 2$ magnetization plateau where the groundstate breaks (re…
Detailed magnetic properties of the compound Sr2YbRuO6 are presented here. The compound belongs to the family of double perovskites forming a monoclinic structure. Magnetization meas-urements reveal clear evidence for two components of magnetic ordering aligned opposite to each other, leading to a magnetization reversal, compensation temperature (T* = 34 K) and neg-ative magnetization at low temperatures and low magnetic fields. Heat capacity measurements corroborate the presence of two components in the magnetic ordering and a noticeable third anomaly at low temperatures (~15 K) which cannot …
We present a $^2$D NMR investigation of the gapped spin-1/2 compound $Cu_2 (C_5 H_{12} N_2)_2 Cl_4$. Our measurements reveal the presence of a magnetic field induced transverse staggered magnetization (TSM) which persists well below and above the field-induced 3D long-range magnetically ordered (FIMO) phase. The symmetry of this TSM is different from that of the TSM induced by the order parameter of the FIMO phase. Its origin, field dependence and symmetry can be explained by an intra-dimer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as shown by DMRG calculations on a spin-1/2 ladder. This leads us to …
Here we report the magnetic and heat capacity studies of the double perovskite com-pounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6. Antiferromagnetic transitions are inferred at 54 K and 47 K in Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6, respectively in the magnetization measure-ments. Heat capacity measurements show large jumps at the corresponding temperatures and confirm the bulk magnetic ordering. Both the measurements provide clear indication of the ordering of the rare earth moments also along with the Ruthenium moments. How-ever, the heat capacity results suggest that the ordering of rare earth magnetic moments is spread…
KCuCl$_3$ is a three-dimensional coupled spin-dimer system and has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap $Δ/k_{\rm B}=31$ K. High-field magnetization measurements for KCuCl$_3$ have been performed in static magnetic fields of up to 30 T and in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 60 T. The entire magnetization curve including the saturation region was obtained at $T=1.3$ K. From the analysis of the magnetization curve, it was found that the exchange parameters determined from the dispersion relations of the magnetic excitations should be reduced, which suggests the importance of the renorma…
The effects of magnetic field on the martensitic transition have been studied in Ni45Co5Mn38Sb12. We find a large field-induced irreversibility in this system, as revealed by the field dependence of resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity data. At the critical temperature, the field-induced conversion of the martensitic to austenite phase is not reversible under any field variation. At this temperature any energy fluctuation induces nucleation and growth of the equilibrium austenite phase at the expense of the metastable martensitic phase and gets arrested. All these three measurements c…
Trirutile-type LiFe$_2$F$_6$ is a charge-ordered material with Fe$^{2+}$/Fe$^{3+}$ configuration. Here its physical properties, including magnetism, electronic structure, phase transition, and charge ordering, are studied theoretically. On one hand, the charge ordering leads to improper ferroelectricity with a large polarization. On the other hand, its magnetic ground state can be tuned from the antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic by moderate compressive strain. Thus, LiFe$_2$F$_6$ can be a rare multiferroic with both large magnetization and polarization. Most importantly, since the charge orde…
The magnetization measurements have been performed on the doped spin gap system TlCu_{1-x}Mg_xCl_3 with x <= 0.025. The parent compound TlCuCl_3 is a three-dimensional coupled spin dimer system with the excitation gap Delta/k_B = 7.7 K. The impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordering was clearly observed. The easy axis lies in the (0,1,0) plane. It was found that the transition temperature increases with increasing Mg^{2+} concentration x, while the spin-flop transition field is almost independent of x. The magnetization curve suggests that the impurity-induced antiferromagnetic ordering coexi…
We propose a new mechanism of nonlinear nonreciprocal transport in magnetic systems. By considering a noncoplanar magnetic ordering on a bilayer triangular lattice, we clarify that a local scalar chirality degree of freedom is a source of nonreciprocal transport, which does not require any relativistic spin-orbit coupling, net scalar chirality, and net magnetization. We show a close relationship between the asymmetric band modulation and the nonreciprocal transport under the noncoplanar magnetic ordering based on the model-parameter dependences in the real-space picture.
Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ has two inter-penetrating square Cu sublattices, one with square root 2 times the in-plane spacing of the other. Isotropic magnetic interactions between the two sublattices are completely frustrated. Quantum fluctuations resolve the intrinsic degeneracy in the ordering direction of the more weakly coupled sublattice in favor of collinear ordering. We present neutron scattering and magnetization studies of the magnetic structure when the Cu ions are substituted with Co. The Co spins create new magnetic interactions between the two sublattices. The ordering behavior of bo…
We report the crystal structure and unconventional magnetic ordering of Cs_2Cu_3CeF_{12}, which is composed of buckled kagome lattice of Cu^{2+} ions. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is fairly anisotropic, so that the present spin system can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. Although the direct exchange interactions between neighboring spins were found to be all antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic magnetic ordering of the dangling spins was observed. Magnetization exhibits a plat…
The realization of an effective spin (Jeff) 1/2 state at low temperatures offers a platform to study the enthralling physics behind the disordered states in certain systems. Here, we report the signatures of magnetic ground state associated with Jeff = 1/2 in CeVO4. Our studies confirm the absence of any ordering or freezing down to 1.8 K. In the low temperature region, the Curie-Weiss fit of the inverse DC susceptibility indicate towards the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations among the Ce3+ spins. The calculated value of effective moment (~1.16 μ_B) corresponds to J = 1/2 with gJ ~ 1.…
We report detailed magnetization measurements on the perovskite oxide NdNiO$_3$. This system has a first order metal-insulator (M-I) transition at about 200 K which is associated with charge ordering. There is also a concurrent paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic spin ordering transition in the system. We show that the antiferromagnetic state of the nickel sublattice is spin canted. We also show that the concurrency of the charge ordering and spin ordering transitions is seen only while warming up the system from low temperature. The transitions are not concurrent while cooling the system throug…
In this paper we report the synthesis, magnetization and heat capacity of the frustrated magnets \emph{A}ErSe$_2$(\emph{A}=Na,K) which contain perfect triangular lattices of Er$^{3+}$. The magnetization data suggests no long-range magnetic order exists in \emph{A}ErSe$_2$(\emph{A}=Na,K), which is consistent with the heat capacity measurements. Large anisotropy is observed between the magnetization within the \emph{ab} plane and along the \emph{c} axis of both compounds. When the magnetic field is applied along \emph{ab} plane, anomalies are observed at 1.8 $μ_B$ in NaErSe$_2$ at 0.2 T and 2.1 …
We show that when the electron and hole densities are unbalanced, observable nonlinear anomalous Hall effect and current-induced orbital magnetization appear at zero magnetic field in the weak charge ordering (CO) state of an organic two-dimensional Dirac fermion system, a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3. These current-induced phenomena are caused by a finite Berry curvature dipole resulting from inversion symmetry breaking and Dirac cone tilting. In the actual system, however, these effects are canceled out between different types of inversion asymmetric CO domains. To avoid the cancellation, we propose a new …
The strongly correlated system Ho11B12 with boron sublattice Jahn-Teller instability and nanoscale electronic phase separation (dynamic charge stripes) was studied in detail by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry and heat capacity measurements at temperatures in the range 3-300 K. From the analysis of registered INS spectra, we determined parameters of the cubic crystal field at holmium sites, B4=- 0.333 meV and B6= -2.003 meV (in Stevens notations), with an unconventional large ratio B6/B4 pointing on the dominant role of conduction electrons in the formation of a crystal field p…
We study S=1 kagome antiferromagnets with isotropic Heisenberg exchange $J$ and strong easy axis single-ion anisotropy $D$. For $D \gg J$, the low-energy physics can be described by an effective $S=1/2$ $XXZ$ model with antiferromagnetic $J_z \sim J$ and ferromagnetic $J_\perp \sim J^2/D$. Exploiting this connection, we argue that non-trivial ordering into a "spin-nematic" occurs whenever $D$ dominates over $J$, and discuss its experimental signatures. We also study a magnetic field induced transition to a magnetization plateau state at magnetization 1/3 which breaks lattice translation symmet…
The field induced magnetic phase transitions of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ were investigated by means of magnetization process and neutron scattering experiments. This system undergoes magnetic phase transition at Neél temperature $T_\mathrm{N}=1.4$ K at zero field, and exhibits the magnetization plateau at approximately one third of the saturation magnetization for the field directions $H\parallel b$ and $H\parallel c$. In the present study, additional symptom of the two-third magnetization plateau was found in the field derivative of the magnetization process. The magnetic structure was found to be inco…
Polycrystalline CuO samples with Co doping were prepared by solid state method with flowing oxygen condition and examined their structural and multiferroic properties. Structural studies have confirmed single phase monoclinic crystal structure of all samples, however, in Co doped samples a decrease in volume with an increase in monoclinic distortion is found. For pristine sample, temperature dependent magnetization has confirmed two antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions at 213 K and 230 K and frequency independent dielectric peaks at these AFM transitions suggesting the ferroelectric nature. Mag…
We have measured the magnetic field (H<90 kOe) and pressure (P<10 kbar) dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature, Tmag, in single crystal samples of NaxCoO2 for a range of Na concentrations (0.60<x<0.72). We show that in zero field, Tmag remains constant with decreasing x before magnetic order disappears at x=0.65. Heat capacity and magnetization data show that for x=0.70, Tmag is unchanged in an applied field. In contrast, magnetization data collected under hydrostatic pressure show that Tmag increases from 22.0 K at 1 bar to 25.4 K at 10 kbar. This rise is at odds with the behaviour e…
We present a detailed study of R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) single crystals by measurements of crystal structure, stoichiometry, temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and specific heat. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy with x varying from ~ 0.1 for R = La to ~0.7 for R = Nd. The electrical resistivity of this series follows metallic behavior at high temperatures. Determination of clear anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) have been made. For Pr3Ni1.5…
Single Crystals of Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ have been prepared by the traveling floating-zone method, and possible evidence of a charge -orbital density wave in this material presented earlier [PRB68,092405 (2003)] using High Resolution Electron Microscopy [HRTEM] and Electron Diffraction [ED]. In the current note we present direct evidence of charge-orbital ordering in this material using heat capacity measurements. Our heat capacity measurements indicate a clear transition consistent with prior observation. We find two main transitions, one at temperature $T_{_H}^{HC}=310-314$ K, and ot…
The equiatomic PrGe single crystal was grown by Czochralski pulling method. The grown single crystal was found to have CrB-type orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group \textit{Cmcm} (#63). Transport and magnetization data reveal large anisotropy in the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. PrGe was found to exhibit two consecutive magnetic orderings at 44 K and 41.5 K, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility measurement along the three principal directions, in low applied fields, revealed a cusp like behaviour at 44 K while at 41.5 K a ferromagnetic l…
Field-induced magnetic ordering in the Haldane chain compound SrNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and effect of anisotropy have been investigated using single crystals. Static susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering, high-field magnetization, and low temperature heat-capacity studies confirm a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state and a gap between the singlet ground state and triplet excited states. The intra-chain exchange interaction is estimated to be $J \sim 8.9{\pm}$0.1 meV. Splitting of the dispersions into two modes with minimum energies 1.57 and 2.58 meV confirms the existence of single-io…
We have performed a detailed transverse magnetization study of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7. A transverse magnetization of about 10^{-3}M_{sat} is observed in the low-temperature ordered phases. These measurements result in the refinement of the Gd2Ti2O7 phase diagrams. Observation of a transverse magnetization indicates loss of the cubic symmetry in some of the magnetic phases and provides new information for a better understanding of the complicated magnetic ordering of Gd2Ti2O7.
We synthesized a quasi-two-dimensional distorted triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ca$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$, in which the effective spin of Co$^{2+}$ is 1/2 at low temperatures, whose magnetic properties were studied by dc susceptibility and magnetization techniques. The x-ray diffraction confirms the quality of our powder samples. The large Weiss constant $θ_{CW}\sim$ $-55$ K and the low Neel temperature($T_N\sim$ 1.45 K) give a frustration factor $f$ ($=\midθ_{CW}/T_N \mid$) $\approx$ 38, suggesting that Ca$_3$CoNb$_2$O$_9$ resides in strong frustration regime. Slightly below $T_N$, deviation be…
Alkali superoxide CsO2 is one of candidates for the spin-1/2 one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnet, which may be sequentially caused by an ordering of the pi-orbital of O2- molecule below TS ~ 70 K. Here, we report on the magnetism in powder CsO2 and high-magnetic field magnetization measurements in pulsed-magnetic fields of up to 60 T. We obtained the low temperature phase diagram around the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN = 9.6 K under the magnetic field. At 1.3 K, remarkable up-turn curvature in the magnetization around a saturation field of ~ 60 T is found, which corresponds to th…
We present a complete characterization of ferromagnetic system CeIr2B2 using powder x-ray diffraction XRD, magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), specific heat C(T), electrical resistivity rho(T,H), and thermoelectric power S(T) measurements. Furthermore 11B NMR study was performed to probe the magnetism on a microscopic scale. The chi(T), C(T) and rho(T) data confirm bulk ferromagnetic ordering with Tc = 5.1 K. Ce ions in CeIr2B2 are in stable trivalent state. Our low-temperature C(T) data measured down to 0.4 K yield Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 73(4) mJ/molK2 which…
We report synthesis and magnetization of Sr2RuREO6 (RE/Ru-211O6) with RE = Gd and Eu. Both Gd,Eu/Ru-211O6 are formed in distorted perovskite-type single phase with monoclinic P21/n space group. Magnetization (M/T) measurements exhibited antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments for both Gd and Eu compounds at TN of around 30 K due to super-exchange Ru-O-O-Ru interaction. Interestingly enough, detailed M/H plots of Gd/Ru-211O6 exhibited, the development of a ferromagnetic (FM) component at 20 K. Further at below 10 K, the FM component disappears and rather an spin freezing field (HSF) of around …
The complex magnetic structures, spin-reorientation and associated exchange interactions have been investigate in Er$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$FeO$_3$ using bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations. The Fe$^{3+}$ spins order as G-type antiferromagnet structure depicted by $Γ_{4}$($G_{x}$,$A_{y}$,$F_{z}$) irreducible representation below 700K, similar to its end compounds. The bulk magnetization data indicate occurrence of the spin-reorientation and rare-earth magnetic ordering below $\sim$75 K and 10 K, respectively. The neutron diff…
The anisotropic magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound CePd$_2$Ge$_2$, crystallizing in the tetragonal crystal structure have been investigated in detail on a single crystal grown by Czochralski method. From the electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity data, the Néel temperature is confirmed to be 5.1 K. Anisotropic behaviour of magnetization and resistivity is observed along the two principal crystallographic directions viz., [100] and [001]. The isothermal magnetization measured in the magnetically ordered state at 2 K exhibits a spin re-orientation at 13.5 T for …
The compound PrFe$_2$Al$_8$ possesses a three-dimensional network structure resulting from the packing of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr. Along the $c$-axis, Fe and Pr form {\em chains} which are separated from each other by the Al-network. In this paper, the magnetism and crystalline electric field effects in PrFe$_2$Al$_8$ are investigated through the analysis of magnetization and specific heat data. A magnetic phase transition in the Pr lattice is identified at $T^{Pr}_{N}\approx$ 4~K in dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. At 2~K, the…
The critical properties at the ferromagnetic - paramagnetic transition have been analysed from data of static magnetization measurements on single crystals of Pr1-xPbxMnO3, for x = 0.23 and x = 0.30. In Pr1-xPbxMnO3 the ferromagnetic ordering and the metal-insulator transition do not coincide in parts of the phase diagram. The crystal with x = 0.23 is a ferromagnetic insulator with Curie temperature Tc = 173 K, while the crystal with x =0.30 has Tc = 198 K and remains metallic up to a metal-insulator transition temperature Tmi = 235 K. The dc magnetization measurements were carried out in the …
We present a detailed symmetry analysis of the degeneracy lifting due to higher order spin exchanges in the pyrochlore lattice in applied magnetic field. Under the assumption of the 4 sublattice ordering, the criteria for a stable half-magnetization plateau are deduced. The higher order exchange terms may originate from spin-lattice coupling, or can describe quantum and thermal fluctuations.
We report unusual effects of nonmagnetic impurities on the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. The substitution of nonmagnetic Ti4+ for Ru4+ induces localized-moment magnetism characterized by unexpected Ising anisotropy with the easy axis along the interlayer c direction. Furthermore, for x(Ti) > 0.03 magnetic ordering occurs in the metallic state with the remnant magnetization along the c-axis. We argue that the localized moments are induced in the Ru4+ and/or oxygen ions surrounding Ti4+ and that the ordering is due to their interaction mediated by itinerant Ru-4d electrons with strong spi…
We report the synthesis, x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline samples of undoped LiNi2P3O10 and samples with non-magnetic impurity (Zn2+, S = 0) and magnetic impurity (Cu2+, S = 1/2) at the Ni site. The magnetic susceptibility data show a broad maximum at around 10 K and a small anomaly at about 7 K in the undoped sample. There is a lambda-like anomaly in the specific heat at 7 K, possibly due to the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering in the system. The magnetic entropy change at the ordering temperature is close to the value correspondin…
We study isotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled by antiferromagnetic Ising interaction as an effective spin model for the ytterbium aluminum perovskite YbAlO$_3$. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we calculate the magnetization curve, local spin, central charge, and dynamical spin structure factors in the presence of magnetic field. From the fitting of the experimental magnetization curve, the effective intrachain and interchain couplings are estimated as $J=2.3$K and $J_{\rm ic}=0.8$K, respectively. We can quantitatively explain the experimental obser…
We present an experimental study of the pyrochlore coumpound Nd2Zr2O7 by means of neutron scattering and magnetization measurements down to 90 mK. The Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments exhibit a strong local $\langle$111$\rangle$ Ising anisotropy together with a dipolar-octupolar nature, different from the standard Kramers-doublet studied so far. We show that, despite the positive Curie-Weiss temperature, \ndzr\ undergoes a transition around 285 mK towards an all-in$-$all-out antiferromagnetic state. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram in the three directions of the applied field and reveal a meta…
Systematic measurements of temperature dependent magnetization, resistivity and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) at ambient pressure as well as resistivity under pressures up to 5.25 GPa were conducted on single crystals of CrAuTe$_4$. Magnetization data suggest that magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic $c$-axis below $T_\textrm{N}$ = 255 K. ARPES measurements show band reconstruction due to the magnetic ordering. Magnetoresistance data show clear anisotropy, and, at high fields, quantum oscillations. The Neel temperature decreases mono…
By introducing a basis for a novel realization of the SU(4) Lie algebra, we exactly solve a spin-orbital chain with one-ion $L$-$S$ coupling (OILSC) via the Bethe ansatz (BA) approach. In the context of different Landé $g$ factors of the spin and orbital sectors, the OILSC results in rich and novel quantum phase transitions. Some accurate analytical expressions for the critical fields are obtained. Both spin ordering and orbital ordering are found in a gapped singlet phase. The system exhibits many interesting phenomena such as nonvanishing magnetization of the singlet phase, multi-entrance of…
We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of the ternary compound ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$. Single crystals of this compound were grown by high temperature solution growth technique, using Al:Ge eutectic composition as flux. From the powder x-ray diffraction we confirmed that ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type crystal structure. The anisotropic magnetic properties of a single crystal were investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity. A bulk magnetic ordering occurs around 4 K inferred from the magnetic susc…
In this article, the collective response of the spins is explored through low field bulk magnetic measurement for the series YMn$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_5$ (x= 0.0, 0.05). Low field ac susceptibility and dc magnetization of YMn$_2$O$_5$ shows multiple transition in analogy to those observed in electrical measurement of the compound. Using various time dependent magnetization protocols it has been observed that the behavior of spins in commensurate and incommensurate phase are drastically different. YMn$_{1.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_5$ undergoes a ferrimagnetic ordering with an enhanced magnetic ordering tempe…
Heat capacity measurements were used to investigate the magnetic ordering processes in single crystal samples of SrDy2O4 in a magnetic field applied along the [010] and [001] directions. In zero field this compound appears to be magnetically disordered down to at least 0.39 K. A magnetic field applied along the [010] direction induces a very sharp transition at 20 kOe, seen as a strong peak in the heat capacity versus field, C(H) curves, while for H // [001], the magnetisation process is accompanied by the development of only broad features in the C(H) curves. The process of field induced orde…
LuFe2O4 exhibits multiferroicity due to charge order on a frustrated triangular lattice. We find that the magnetization of LuFe2O4 in the multiferroic state can be electrically controlled by applying voltage pulses. Depending on with or without magnetic fields, the magnetization can be electrically switched up or down. We have excluded thermal heating effect and attributed this electrical control of magnetization to an intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in response to the electrical breakdown of charge ordering. Our findings open up a new route toward electrical control of magnetization.
The low-temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra and the static magnetization data obtained for the stoichiometric single crystals of $β$-Na$_{0.33}$V$_2$O$_5$ indicate that this quasi-one-dimensional mixed valence (V4+/V5+) compound demonstrates at $T_N=22$ K the phase transition into the canted antiferromagnetically ordered state. The spontaneous magnetization of $3.4\times 10^{-3}$ $μ_B$ per V$^{4+}$ ion was found to be oriented along the two-fold $b$ axis of the monoclinic structure, the vector of antiferromagnetism is aligned with the $a$ axis and the Dzyaloshinsky vector is para…
We present a formalism to calculate the orbital magnetization of interacting Dirac fermions under a magnetic field. In this approach, the divergence difficulty is overcome with a special limit of the derivative of the thermodynamic potential with respect to the magnetic field. The formalism satisfies the particle-hole symmetry of the Dirac fermions system. We apply the formalism to the interacting Dirac fermions in graphene. The charge and spin orderings and the exchange interactions between all the Landau levels are taken into account by the mean-field theory. The results for the orbital magn…
Using a non-Abelian density matrix renormalization group method we determine the phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model in one dimension, by directly measuring the magnetization of the ground-state. This allowed us to discover a second ferromagnetic phase missed in previous approaches. The phase transitions are found to be continuous. The spin-spin correlation function is studied in detail, and we determine in which regions the large and small Fermi surfaces dominate. The importance of double-exchange ordering and its competition with Kondo singlet formation is emphasized in understanding th…
Systematic studies of magnetic properties of LaSr2Mn2O7 as a function of crystalline grain size provide information on how the crystalline grain size affects the magnetic and charge ordering in this compound. The half-doped bi-layered manganite LaSr2Mn2O7 (x=0.5) in its bulk form has CE-type antiferromagnetic (CE-AFM) charge ordering phase transition. In this work, we have prepared LaSr2Mn2O7 ceramic samples using Pechini sol-gel method to produce different grain sizes and the effect of crystalline grain sizes between 150 200 to 1000 nm on magnetic properties results obtained by the SQUID magn…
Due to a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling between Co$^{3+}$ ions at trigonal sites, chains Co$_2$O$_6$ are considered as large rigid spin moments. The antiferromagnetic Ising model on the triangular lattice is applied to describe an interchain ordering. An evolution of metastable states in a sweeping magnetic field is investigated by the single-flip technique. At the first approximation two steps in the magnetization curve and a plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization are found. Four steps in magnetization are determined in high-order approximations in agreement with experimental results…
We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline Ba(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$ (BTCPO) via x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and $^{31}$P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements. BTCPO has a 2D layered structure with interlinked Cu$_{4}$O$_{12}$ tetramer units. A broad maximum is observed around 16.5 K in our magnetization data accompanied by a sharp anomaly around $T$ = 9.5 K in the heat capacity. An anomaly at $T$ = 9.5 K is also found in the temperature dependence of the $^{31}$P NMR spin-lattice …
We report on the temperature and field driven metal-insulator transition in disordered Ge:Mn magnetic semiconductors accompanied by magnetic ordering, magnetoresistance reaching thousands of percents and suppression of the extraordinary Hall effect by a magnetic field. Magnetoresistance isotherms are shown to obey a universal scaling law with a single scaling parameter depending on temperature and fabrication. We argue that the strong magnetic disorder leads to localization of charge carriers and is the origin of the unusual properties of Ge:Mn alloys.
We have studied the magnetization of a series of spin-charge ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+delta) single crystals with 0 < x < 0.5. For fields applied parallel to the ab plane there is a large irreversibility below a temperature T(F1) ~ 50 K and a smaller irreversibility that persists up to near the charge ordering temperature. We observed a novel memory effect in the thermo-remnant magnetization across the entire doping range. We found that these materials retain a memory of the temperature at which an external field was removed, and that there is a pronounced increase in the thermo-remnant magne…
The influence of bond randomness on long range magnetic ordering in the weakly coupled S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain materials Cu(py)2(Cl1-xBrx)2 is studied by muon spin rotation and bulk measurements. Disorder is found to have a strong effect on the ordering temperature TN, and an even stronger one on the saturation magnetization m0, but considerably more so in the effectively lower-dimensional Br-rich materials. The observed behavior is attributed to Random Singlet ground states of individual spin chains, but remains in contradiction with chain mean field theory predictions. In this c…
The magnetic properties of single crystalline EuPtGe$_3$, crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been studied by means of magnetisation, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. The susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N}$ = 11\,K. The Mössbauer data confirm this conclusion, but evidence a slight first order character of the transition. Analysing the magnetisation data using a mean field model with two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices allows to explain some aspects …
We use exact diagonalization combined with mean-field theory to investigate the phase diagram of the spin-orbital model for cubic vanadates. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Hund's exchange and triggers a novel phase, with the ordering of $t_{2g}$ orbital magnetic moments stabilized by the tilting of VO$_6$ octahedra. It explains qualitatively spin canting and reduction of magnetization observed in YVO$_3$. At finite temperature an orbital Peierls instability in the $C$-type antiferromagnetic phase induces modulation of magnetic exchange constants even in absence of lattice distortions. T…
We have investigated the low energy nuclear spin excitations in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$ by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Previous neutron diffraction investigations gave ambiguous results about Nd magnetic ordering at low temperatures. The present element-specific technique gave direct evidence for the magnetic ordering of Nd ions. We found considerable difference in the process of the Nd magnetic ordering at low temperature in NdMn$_2$Si$_2$ and NdMn$_2$Ge$_2$. Our results are consistent with those of magnetization and recent neutron diffraction measurements.
In this study, we investigate the magnetoelectric (ME) effect of the newly discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound Ce$_{3}$TiBi$_{5}$ with a hexagonal structure (space group $P6_{3}$/$mcm$). In this system, Ce ions form zig-zag chains that extend along the $c$-axis. We focus on the lack of the local inversion symmetry at the Ce site, although the crystal structure has an inversion center. A theoretical study has predicted that magnetization can be induced by an electric current in the AFM ordering on the zig-zag chain. We conducted magnetization measurements on Ce$_{3}$TiBi$_{5}$ under an …
