We report the synthesis, x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline samples of undoped LiNi2P3O10 and samples with non-magnetic impurity (Zn2+, S = 0) and magnetic impurity (Cu2+, S = 1/2) at the Ni site. The magnetic susceptibility data show a broad maximum at around 10 K and a small anomaly at about 7 K in the undoped sample. There is a lambda-like anomaly in the specific heat at 7 K, possibly due to the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering in the system. The magnetic entropy change at the ordering temperature is close to the value corresponding to Rln(2S+1) expected for an S = 1 system. The temperature corresponding to the broad maximum and the ordering temperature both decrease on Zn and Cu substitutions and also in applied magnetic fields.
Evidence for the quasi one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetism of CuO is presented in a framework of Heisenberg model. We have obtained an experimental absolute value of the paramagnetic spin susceptibility of CuO by subtracting the orbital susceptibility separately from the total susceptibility through the $^{63}$Cu NMR shift measurement, and compared directly with the theoretical predictions. The result is best described by a 1D $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) model, supporting the speculation invoked by earlier authors. We also present a semi-quantitative reason why CuO, seemingl…
We use a quantum Monte Carlo method (stochastic series expansion) to study the effects of a magnetic or nonmagnetic impurity on the magnetic susceptibility of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. At low temperatures, we find a log-divergent contribution to the transverse susceptibility. We also introduce an effective few-spin model that can quantitatively capture the differences between magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities at high and intermediate temperatures.
We compute the dynamical magnetic susceptibility of the t-J model in its commensurate flux phase at low hole doping. We compare the calculations with experiments and exact diagonalization studies.
We compute the dynamical charge susceptibility in the two-dimensional Hubbard model within the dynamical cluster approximation. In order to understand the connection between charge susceptibility and pseudogap, we investigate the momentum, doping, and temperature dependence. We find that as a function of frequency, the dynamical charge susceptibility is well represented by a single peak at a characteristic frequency. It shows little momentum or temperature dependence, while the doping dependence is more evident, and no clear signature of the pseudogap is observed. Data for the doping evolution…
We show that antiferromagnetic susceptibility in ferritin increases with temperature between 4.2 K and 180 K (i. e. below the Néel temperature) when taken as the derivative of the magnetization at high fields ($30\times10^4$ Oe). This behavior contrasts with the decrease in temperature previously found, where the susceptibility was determined at lower fields ($5\times10^4$ Oe). At high fields (up to $50 \times10^4$ Oe) the temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic susceptibility in ferritin nanoparticles approaches the normal behavior of bulk antiferromagnets and nanoparticles considerin…
Strong electronic nematic fluctuations have been discovered near optimal doping for several families of Fe-based superconductors, motivating the search for a possible link between these fluctuations, nematic quantum criticality, and high temperature superconductivity. Here we probe a key prediction of quantum criticality, namely power law dependence of the associated nematic susceptibility as a function of composition and temperature approaching the compositionally-tuned putative quantum critical point. To probe the 'bare' quantum critical point requires suppression of the superconducting stat…
Dielectric responses have been investigated on the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO2 and its site-diluted analogs CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.01 and 0.02) with and without application of magnetic field. We have found a ferroelectric behavior at zero magnetic field for x=0.02. At any doping level, the onset field of the ferroelectricity always coincides with that of the noncollinear magnetic structure while the transition field dramatically decreases to zero field with Al doping. The results imply the further possibility of producing the ferroelectricity by modifying the frustrated spin structure…
The temperature dependence of the paramagnetic susceptibility of the iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2 and its connection with the spectral properties of that material is investigated by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Unlike other iron pnictide parent compounds where the typical oxidation state of iron is 2, the formal valence of Fe in KFe2As2 is 2.5, corresponding to an effective doping with 0.5 hole per iron atom compared to, for example, BaFe2As2. This shifts the chemical potential and thereby re…
We present muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and susceptibility measurements on single crystals of isoelectronically doped URu$_{2-x}$T$_x$Si$_2$ (T = Fe, Os) for doping levels up to 50\%. Zero Field (ZF) $μ$SR measurements show long-lived oscillations demonstrating that an antiferromagnetic state exists down to low doping levels for both Os and Fe dopants. The measurements further show an increase in the internal field with doping for both Fe and Os. Comparison of the local moment - hybridization crossover temperature from susceptibility measurements and our magnetic transition temperature shows tha…
We report muon spin rotation measurements of the local magnetic susceptibility around a positive muon in the paramagnetic state of the quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnet dichlorobis (pyridine) copper (II). Signals from three distinct sites are resolved and have a temperature dependent frequency shift which is significantly different than the magnetic susceptibility. This difference is attributed to a muon induced perturbation of the spin 1/2 chain. The obtained frequency shifts are compared with Transfer Matrix DMRG numerical simulations.
We investigate a large variation in a diagonal component of the linear magnetoelectric (ME) susceptibility in a polar ferrimagnet Mn2Mo3O8 while changing the magnetic-ion site from orbital-quenched Mn2+ to Fe2+ with strong uniaxial anisotropy. In Mn2Mo3O8, the linear ME susceptibility is dominated by the non-relativistic exchange striction mechanism, showing a positive value at low temperature and a critical behavior toward negative divergence around the transition temperature. This negative peak value becomes four times larger when 50% of Mn2+ ions are replaced with Fe2+ ion, highlighting the…
We study the magnetic susceptibility of one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnets containing non-magnetic impurities which cut the chain into finite segments. For the susceptibility of long anisotropic Heisenberg chain-segments with open boundaries we derive a parameter-free result at low temperatures using field theory methods and the Bethe Ansatz. The analytical result is verified by comparing with Quantum-Monte-Carlo calculations. We then show that the partitioning of the chain into finite segments can explain the Curie-like contribution observed in recent experiments on Sr_2Cu_{1-x}Pd_xO_{3+δ…
The self-consistent treatment of real and imaginary renormalizations in the dynamic spin susceptibility for the frustrated Heisenberg model reproduces for cuprates at low doping: a spin spectrum, a saddle point for q near (pi/2,pi/2), nearly constant q-integrated susceptibility for energy less than 150 meV and a scaling law. Frustration increase (optimally doped case) leads to a stripe scenario with a saddle point at q near (pi,pi/2) and $χ_{2D}(ω)$ peak near 30meV. The obtained $χ(\mathbf{q},ω)$ describes neutron scattering results and leads to well-known temperature transport anomalies in do…
A relaxation-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the $t$--$J$ model is presented. By a sum-rule-conserving generalized mean-field approximation (GMFA), the two-spin correlation functions of arbitrary range, the staggered magnetization, the uniform static susceptibility, and the antiferromagnetic correlation length are calculated in a wide region of hole doping and temperaturs. A good agreement with available exact diagonalization (ED) data is found. The correlation length is in reasonable agreement with neutron-scattering experiments on La_{2-δ}Sr_δ)CuO_4. Going beyond the G…
The spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet herbertsmithite, ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$, is a candidate material for a quantum spin liquid ground state. We show that the magnetic response of this material displays an unusual scaling relation in both the bulk ac susceptibility and the low energy dynamic susceptibility as measured by inelastic neutron scattering. The quantity $χT^α$ with $α\simeq 0.66$ can be expressed as a universal function of $H/T$ or $ω/T$. This scaling is discussed in relation to similar behavior seen in systems influenced by disorder or by the proximity to a quantum crit…
We present microscopic and macroscopic magnetic properties of the highly frustrated antiferromagnet Ba$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$ZnCr$_{7p}$Ga$_{10-7p}$O$_{22}$, respectively probed with NMR and SQUID experiments. The $T$-variation of the intrinsic susceptibility of the Cr$^{3+}$ frustrated kagomé bilayer, $χ_{kag}$, displays a maximum around 45 K. The dilution of the magnetic lattice has been studied in detail for $0.29 \leq p \leq0.97$. Novel dilution independent defects, likely related with magnetic bond disorder, are evidenced and discussed. We compare our results to SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$. Bo…
We present results from our analysis of the finite-temperature properties of the spin 1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. The analysis is based on the exact diagonalization of small clusters with 16 and 20 sites utilizing the finite-temperature Lanczos method. In particular, we focus on the temperature dependence of the third-order magnetic susceptibility as a method to resolve the ambiguity of exchange constants. We discuss the entire range of the frustration angle $ϕ=\tan^{-1}(J_{2}/J_{1})$ parameterizing the different possible phases of the model, including the large r…
Effects of Al, Mn and Sb dopings in CeFe2 and effect of applied pressure have been investigated. Al doping gives rise to the FM-AFM transition and a reduction in the magnetic moment and TC values, clearly indicating the growth of the AFM component. Mn and Sb dopings only cause a reduction in TC value. It is found that in general external pressure enhances the antiferromagnetism in both the pure and the doped alloys. Enhancement of the Ce 4f- Fe 3d hybridization as a result of dopings and with the external pressure may be the reason for the stabilization of antiferromagnetism in these alloys.
We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collect…
We report through 17O NMR, an unambiguous local determination of the intrinsic kagome lattice spin susceptibility as well as that created around non-magnetic defects issued from natural Zn/ Cu exchange in the S=1/2 (Cu2+) herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 compound. The issue of a singlet-triplet gap is addressed. The magnetic response around a defect is found to markedly differ from that observed in non-frustrated antiferromagnetic materials. Finally, we discuss our relaxation measurements in the light of Cu and Cl NMR data [cond-mat 070314] and suggest a flat q-dependence of the excitations.
^{139}La nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements in lightly doped La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4 have been performed to reveal the dependence of the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic CuO_2 planes on the character of the doped holes and their interactions with the dopant. A detailed study shows that the magnetic properties are remarkably insensitive to the character of the dopant impurity. This indicates that the added holes form previously unrecognized collective structures.
We present a comprehensive set of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a range of Fe-doped samples of U(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$ with 0.01~$\le~x~\le$~0.15. All of the samples measured exhibit long-range antiferromagnetic order, with the size of the magnetic moment quickly increasing to 0.51~$μ_B$ at 2.5\% doping and continuing to increase monotonically with doping, reaching 0.69~$μ_B$ at 15\% doping. Time-of-flight and inelastic triple-axis measurements show the existence of excitations at (1~0~0) and (1.4~0~0) in all samples, which are also observed in the parent compo…
Neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies of orthorhombic single crystal {\Ksub} confirm the three dimensional (3D) C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Mn$^{2+}$ moments at $T_{\rm N}=305 \pm 3$ K which is slightly higher than that of the parent SrMnSb$_2$ with $T_{\rm N}=297 \pm 3$ K. Susceptibility measurements of the K-doped and parent crystals above $T_{\rm N}$ are characteristic of 2D AFM systems. This is consistent with high temperature neutron diffraction of the parent compound that display persisting 2D AFM correlations well above $T_{\rm N}$ to at least $\sim …
We develop a simple and unbiased numerical method to obtain the uniform susceptibility of quantum many body systems. When a Hamiltonian is spatially deformed by multiplying it with a sine square function that smoothly decreases from the system center toward the edges, the size-scaling law of the excitation energy is drastically transformed to a rapidly converging one. Then, the local magnetization at the system center becomes nearly size independent; the one obtained for the deformed Hamiltonian of a system length as small as L=10 provides the value obtained for the original uniform Hamiltonia…
The intrinsic magnetic susceptibility and local magnetization of the near-kagome quantum magnet vesignieite, Cu3BaV2O8(OH)2, are presented as measured using 51V NMR. The NMR line shift gives an accurate measurement of the intrinsic susceptibility of the kagome sites which closely resembles that of the quantum spin liquid herbertsmithite [A. Olariu et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 087202 (2008)]. It is therefore surprising that, at Tc ~ 9 K, a transition to a heterogeneous ground state is observed. A gradual wipeout of half the NMR intensity indicates a slowly fluctuating spin liquid component and …
We present the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility of spin-half quantum antiferromagnets on spatially anisotropic triangular-lattices, using high temperature series expansions. We consider a model with two exchange constants, $J_1$ and $J_2$ on a lattice that interpolates between the limits of a square-lattice ($J_1=0$), a triangular-lattice ($J_2=J_1$), and decoupled linear chains ($J_2=0$). In all cases, the susceptibility which has a Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperatures, rolls over and begins to decrease below a peak temperature, $T_p$. Scaling the exchange constants t…

The variation of single-particle spectral functions with doping is studied numerically within the t-J model. It is shown that corresponding self energies change from local ones at the intermediate doping to strongly nonlocal ones for a weakly doped antiferromagnet. The nonlocality shows up most clearly in the pseudogap emerging in the density of states, due to the onset of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations.
In search of a quantum phase transition between the two-dimensional ($2$D) ferromagnetism of CaCo$_{2-y}$As$_{2}$ and stripe-type antiferromagnetism in SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we rather find evidence for $1$D magnetic frustration between magnetic square Co layers. We present neutron diffraction data for Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$Co$_{2-y}$As$_{2}$ that reveal a sequence of $x$-dependent magnetic transitions which involve different stacking of $2$D ferromagnetically-aligned layers with different magnetic anisotropy. We explain the $x$-dependent changes to the magnetic order by utilizing classical analytica…
In iron pnictides, high temperature superconductivity emerges after suppressing antiferromagnetism by doping. Here we show that antiferromagnetism in Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeAs$_2$ is robust against and even enhanced by doping. Using $^{75}$As-nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques, we find that an antiferromagnetic order occurs below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 62 K at a high doping concentration ($x$ = 0.15) where superconductivity sets in at the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 35 K. Unexpectedly, $T_{\rm N}$ is enhanced with increasing doping, rising up…
We reinvestigate a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator based on the slave-fermion approach of the t-J model, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and doped holes are described by bosonic spinons and fermionic holons, respectively. Earlier studies have shown that an effective field theory for the doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator is given by a non-relativistic fermion (holon) U(1) gauge theory for charge dynamics and a relativistic boson (spinon) U(1) gauge theory for spin dynamics, thus allowing an anomalous metallic phase where bosonic spinons are gapped away from an antiferromag…
We present a spin-rotation-invariant Green-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic t-J Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. Employing a generalized mean-field approximation for arbitrary temperatures and hole dopings, the electronic spectrum of excitations, the spin-excitation spectrum and thermodynamic quantities (two-spin correlation functions, staggered magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, correlation length) are calculated by solving a coupled system of self-consistency equations for the correlation functions. The temperature and dopin…
We use resonant elastic and inelastic X-ray scattering at the Ir-$L_3$ edge to study the doping-dependent magnetic order, magnetic excitations and spin-orbit excitons in the electron-doped bilayer iridate (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.065$). With increasing doping $x$, the three-dimensional long range antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed and evolves into a three-dimensional short range order from $x = 0$ to $0.05$, followed by a transition to two-dimensional short range order between $x = 0.05$ and $0.065$. Following the evolution of the antiferromagnetic ord…
Magnetic properties are investigated for the Kondo lattice by using the continuous time quantum Monte Colro (CT-QMC) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The DMFT+CT-QMC approach is extended so as to derive the anisotropic magnetic response in the antiferromagnetic phase. The longitudinal and transverse magnetic susceptibilities are numerically derived in the antiferromagnetic phase. For the RKKY regime with a small Kondo coupling, the transverse susceptibility does not decrease below the transition temperature while the longitudinal susceptibility decreases as expected from the mean fi…
We present a spin-rotation-invariant Green-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a stacked honeycomb lattice. Employing a generalized mean-field approximation for arbitrary temperatures, the thermodynamic quantities (two-spin correlation functions, internal energy, magnetic susceptibility, staggered magnetization, N'eel temperature, correlation length) and the spin-excitation spectrum are calculated by solving a coupled system of self-consistency equations for the correlation functions. The temperature dependence of the magnet…
We use the coupled cluster method (CCM) to study a frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$--$J_{1}^{\perp}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a bilayer honeycomb lattice with $AA$ stacking. Both nearest-neighbor (NN) and frustrating next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interactions are present in each layer, with respective exchange coupling constants $J_{1}>0$ and $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1} > 0$. The two layers are coupled with NN AFM exchanges with coupling strength $J_{1}^{\perp}\equiv δJ_{1}>0$. We calculate to high orders of approximation within the CCM the zero-field trans…
The generalized spin stiffness constant for a doped quantum antiferromagnet has been investigated both analytically and numerically as a function of doping concentration at zero temperature, based on the strongly correlated t-J model on two-dimensional square lattice. The nature of the theoretical dependence of the stiffness constant on doping shows a striking similarity with that of the effective exchange constant, obtained from the combination of other theoretical and experimental techniques in the low doping region. This correspondence once again establishes that spin stiffness can very wel…
Using recently developed Lanczos technique we study finite-temperature properties of the 2D Kondo lattice model at various fillings of the conduction band. At half filling the quasiparticle gap governs physical properties of the chemical potential and the charge susceptibility at small temperatures. In the intermediate coupling regime quasiparticle gap scales approximately linearly with Kondo coupling. Temperature dependence of the spin susceptibility reveals the existence of two different temperature scales. A spin gap in the intermediate regime leads to exponential drop of the spin susceptib…
We report muon spin rotation measurements of the local magnetic susceptibility around a positive muon in the paramagnetic state of the quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnet KCuF$_3$. Signals from two distinct sites are resolved which have a temperature dependent frequency shift which is different than the magnetic susceptibility. This difference is attributed to a muon induced perturbation of the spin 1/2 chain.
The incommensurate spin fluctuation of the doped triangular antiferromagnet is studied within the t-J model. It is shown that the commensurate peak near the half-filling is split into six incommensurate peaks in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes. The incommensurability increases with the hole concentration at lower dopings, and saturates at higher dopings. Although the incommensurability is almost energy independent, the weight of these incommensurate peaks decreases with energy and temperature.
A perturbation spin-wave theory for the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice is proposed to calculate the uniform static magnetic susceptibility at finite temperatures, where a divergence in the previous theories due to an artificial phase transition has been removed. To the zeroth order, the main features of the uniform static susceptibility are produced: a linear temperature dependence at low temperatures and a smooth crossover in the intermediate range and the Curie law at high temperatures. When the leading corrections from the spin-wave interactions are included, the re…
We study electronic properties of AA-stacked graphene bilayers. In the single-particle approximation such a system has one electron band and one hole band crossing the Fermi level. If the bilayer is undoped, the Fermi surfaces of these bands coincide. Such a band structure is unstable with respect to a set of spontaneous symmetry violations. Specifically, strong on-site Coulomb repulsion stabilizes antiferromagnetic order. At small doping and low temperatures, the homogeneous phase is unstable, and experiences phase separation into an undoped antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal. The metall…
Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by doping of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO3, a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO3 and …
Motivated by recent experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, we study the inhomogeneous Knight shifts (local susceptibilities) of spin 1/2 Kagome antiferromagnet in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. Using high temperature series expansion, we calculate the local susceptibility and its histogram down to about T=0.4J. At low temperatures, we explore a Dirac spin liquid proposal and calculate the local susceptibility in the mean field and beyond mean field using Gutzwiller projection, finding the overall picture to be consistent with the NMR experiments.
The temperature dependence of the static magnetic susceptibility of exchange-disordered antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 finite chains with an odd number of spins is investigated as a function of size and type of disorder in the exchange coupling. Two models for the exchange disorder distribution are considered. At sufficiently low temperatures each chain behaves like an isolated spin-1/2 particle. As the size of the chains increases, this analogy is lost and the chains evolve into the thermodynamic limit behavior. The present study provides a simple criterion, based on susceptibility mea…
The magnon energy and amplitude renormalization due to intraband particle-hole excitations are studied in a metallic antiferromagnet. The change in sign of the intraband contribution with $ω$ results in significant differences between static and dynamical behaviours. For electron doping, while the coherent magnon peak looses spectral weight and is shifted to higher energy with doping, the low-energy incoherent part becomes increasingly prominent as it narrows in width and shifts to lower energy. Implications for spin dynamics in the electron-doped cuprate $\rm Nd_{2-x} Ce_x Cu O_4$ are discuss…
The fragile nature of itinerant magnetism can be exploited using non-thermal parameters to study quantum criticality. The recently discovered quantum critical point (QCP) in the Sc-doped (hole-like doping) itinerant antiferromagnet TiAu (Ti$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$Au) raised questions about the effects of the crystal and electronic structures on the overall magnetic behavior. In this study, doping with V (electron-like doping) in Ti$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$Au introduces chemical disorder which suppresses antiferromagnetic order from $T_{\rm N} =$ 36~K for $x = 0$ down to 10 K for $x =$ 0.15, whereupon a solubili…
Hydrostatic pressure effects on the temperature- and magnetic field dependencies of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization of the bi-layered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 have been studied by SQUID magnetometer measurements under a hydrostatic helium-gas pressure. The anomalously enhanced low-temperature value of the paramagnetic susceptibility has been found to systematically decrease with increasing pressure. The effect is accompanied by an increase of the temperature Tmax of a pronounced peak of susceptibility. Thus, magnetization measurements under hydrostatic pressure reveal that the lattice c…
The study of impurities in low dimensional antiferromagnets has been a very active field in magnetism ever since the discovery of high temperature superconductivity. One of the most dramatic effects is the appearance of large Knight shifts in a long range around non-magnetic impurities in an antiferromagnetic background. The dependence of the Knight shifts on distance and temperature visualizes the correlations in the system. In this work we present the results for Knight shifts around a single vacancy in the one and two dimensional Heisenberg model.
We analyze the experimental data for the magnetic susceptibility of the material ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 in terms of the Kagome Lattice Heisenberg model (KLHM), discussing possible role of impurity spins, dilution, exchange anisotropy, and both out-of-plane and in-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) anisotropies, with explicit theoretical calculations using the Numerical Linked Cluster (NLC) method and exact diagonalization (ED). The high-temperature experimental data are well described by the pure Heisenberg model with J=170 K. We show that the sudden upturn in the susceptibility around T=75 K is due to DM…
We have generalized the dynamical mean-field theory to study the doping dependence of the crossover from antiferromagnetic to short-range order modelled by an incommensurate spin density wave in the Hubbard model. The local selfenergy which includes spin fluctuations gives quasiparticle weights and spectral properties in good agreement with quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization data in two dimensions. The spectra at finite doping are characterized by a Mott-Hubbard `gap' accompanied by a pseudogap induced by the local spin order.
At doping below 6% the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O{6+y} is a collinear antiferromagnet. Independent of doping the value of the staggered magnetization at zero temperature is about 0.6μ_B. This is the maximum value of the magnetization allowed by quantum fluctuations of localized spins. In this low doping regime the compound is a normal conductor with a finite resistivity at zero temperature. These experimental observations create a unique opportunity for theory to perform a controlled calculation of the electron spectral function. In the present work we perform this calculation within the framewo…
We measured the magnetic susceptibilities of Cu$_6$Ge$_6$O$_{18}$-xH$_2$O ($x = 0 \sim 6$). Susceptibility above the antiferromagnetic (AF) transition temperature ($T_{\rm N}$) agrees with susceptibility of the one-dimensional Heisenberg $S = 1/2$ model with competing AF interactions. From the estimated ratio between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor AF exchange interactions, the spin system is probably located near a boundary between spin systems with gapless and gapped magnetic excitation. The value of $T_{\rm N}/T_{\rm max}$, where $T_{\rm max}$ is temperature at which the suscepti…
We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study effects of free edges in the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find that the magnetic response of an edge is smaller than the bulk susceptibility. This counter-intuitive quantum effect can be traced to enhanced antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor spin correlations, i.e., tendency to local singlet formation, at and close to the edge. These correlations form a comb-like pattern, which can be reproduced with a simple variational valence-bond state. We also study rough edges, and find that these instead significantly enhance the …
The development of spin glass like state in a geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet is a matter of great debate. We investigated the effect of magnetic (Mn) and nonmagnetic (Ga) doping at the Cr site of the layered GF antiferromagnetic compound LiCrO2. 10% Ga doping at the Cr site does not invoke any metastability typical of a glassy magnetic state. However, similar amount of Mn doping certainly drives the system to a spin glass state which is particularly evident from the relaxation, magnetic memory and heat capacity studies. The onset of glassy state in 10% Mn doped sample is of reentrant typ…
Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and thermal expansion are reported for single crystalline CuSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ in the temperature range $5<T<350$ K. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak centered near 60 K that is typical of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic compounds. Long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 8.7 K is accompanied by an energy gap ($Δ$ = 17.48(6) K). This transition represents a crossover from one- to three-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior. Both heat capacity and the thermal expansion coefficients exhibit distinct jumps at $T_N$, which…
We study the magnon contribution to the gravitomagnetoelectric (gravito-ME) effect, in which the magnetization is induced by a temperature gradient, in noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnetic insulators. This phenomenon is totally different from the ME effect, because the temperature gradient is coupled to magnons but an electric field is not. We derive a general formula of the gravito-ME susceptibility in terms of magnon wave functions and find that a difference in $g$ factors of magnetic ions is crucial. We also apply our formula to a specific model. Although the obtained gravito-ME susceptibil…
