Magnetic-field-induced changes of the Fermi surface play a central role in theories of the exotic quantum criticality of YbRh2Si2. We have carried out de Haas-van Alphen measurements in the magnetic-field range 8 T <= H <= 16 T, and directly observe field dependence of the extremal Fermi surface areas. Our data support the theory that a low-field "large" Fermi surface, including the Yb 4f quasihole, is increasingly spin split until a majority-spin branch undergoes a Lifshitz transition and disappears at H0 ~ 10 T, without requiring 4f localization at H0.
Spin susceptibility of a clean Fermi gas with repulsion in any dimension is considered using a supersymmetric low energy theory of interacting spin excitations and renormalization scheme recently proposed by Aleiner and Efetov [cond-mat/0602309]. We generalize this method to include the coupling to the magnetic field. As a result, we obtain for the correction $δχ$ to the Pauli susceptibility a non-analytic temperature dependence of the form $ T^{d-1}γ_{b}^{2}(T)$ in dimensions $d=2,3,$ where $γ_{b}(T)$ is an effective $d$-dependent logarithmically renormalized backscattering amplitude. In one …
We consider the non-analytic terms in the spin susceptibility arising as a result of rescaterring of pairs of quasiparticles. We emphasize the importance of rescattering in the Cooper channel for the analysis of the temperature dependences in the two-dimensional electron systems in the ballistic regime. In the calculation of the linear in $T$ term we use angular harmonics in the Cooper channel, because for each harmonic the interaction amplitude is renormalized independently. We observe, that as a consequence of strong renormalizations in the Cooper ladder, the temperature derivative of the sp…
We show that in the Anderson model for a two-dimensional non-Fermi liquid a magnetic instability can lead to the itinerant electron ferromagnetism. The critical temperature and the susceptibility of the paramagnetic phase have been analytically calculated. The usual Fermi behaviour is re-obtained taking the anomalous exponent to be zero.
The semiclassical Lifshitz-Kosevich-type description is given for the angular dependence of quantum oscillations with combination frequencies in a multiband quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid with a constant number of electrons. The analytical expressions are found for the Dingle, thermal, spin, and amplitude (Yamaji) reduction factors of the novel combination harmonics, where the latter two strongly oscillate with the direction of the field. At the "magic" angles those factors reduce to the purely two-dimensional expressions given earlier. The combination harmonics are suppressed in the prese…
We give an overview on experimental studies performed in the last 25 years on heavy-fermion systems in high magnetic field. The properties of field-induced magnetic transitions in heavy-fermion materials close to a quantum antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic instability are presented. Effects of a high magnetic field to the Fermi surface, in particular the splitting of spin-up and spin-down bands, are also considered. Finally, we review on recent advances on the study of non-centrosymmetric compounds and ferromagnetic superconductors in a high magnetic field.
We address the problem of a magnetic impurity in a two dimensional $U(1)$ spin liquid where the spinons have gap-less excitations near the Fermi-surface and are coupled to an emergent gap-less gauge field. Using a large N expansion we analyze the strong coupling behavior and obtain the Kondo temperature which was found to be the same as for a Fermi-liquid. In this approximation we also study the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility of the impurity. These quantities present no deviations from the Fermi-liquid ones, consistent with the notion that the magnetic impurity is only sensitive…
We show that a strongly correlated Fermi system with the fermion condensate, which exhibits strong deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior, is driven into the Landau Fermi liquid by applying a small magnetic field $B$ at temperature T=0. This field-induced Landau Fermi liquid behavior provides the constancy of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. A reentrance into the strongly correlated regime is observed if the magnetic field $B$ decreases to zero, then the effective mass $M^*$ diverges as $M^*\propto 1/\sqrt{B}$. At finite temperatures, the strongly correlated regime is restored at some temperatu…
We consider the non-analytic temperature dependences of the specific heat coefficient, C(T)/T, and spin susceptibility, χ_{s} (T), of 2D interacting fermions beyond the weak-coupling limit. We demonstrate within the Luttinger-Ward formalism that the leading temperature dependences of C(T)/T and χ_s (T) are linear in T, and are described by the Fermi liquid theory. We show that these temperature dependences are universally determined by the states near the Fermi level and, for a generic interaction, are expressed via the spin and charge components of the exact backscattering amplitude of quasi-…
The theory of the quasielastic magnetic scattering of neutrons at the spin liquid with RVB (resonance valence bonds) correlations is presented. Calculations demonstrate that the dependence of the scattering cross section on the energy transfer reproduces experimental shape of quasielastic peak in heavy fermion systems. It is shown that Fermi statistics of the spin liquid elementary excitations leads to the oscillations of the quasielastic scattering total cross section as a function of the momentum transfer.
Detailed anisotropic resistivity and heat capacity measurements down to ~0.4 K and up to 140 kOe are reported for a single crystalline YbAgGe. Based on these data YbAgGe, a member of the hexagonal RAgGe series, can be classified as new, stoichiometric heavy fermion compound with two magnetic ordering temperatures below 1 K and field-induced non-Fermi-liquid behavior above 45-70 kOe and 80-110 kOe for $H || (ab) and H || c respectively.
We study the nonanalytic behavior of the static spin susceptibility of 2D fermions as a function of temperature and magnetic field. For a generic Fermi liquid, χ_s (T, H)= const+c_1 max (T,μ_B|H|), where c_1 is shown to be expressed via complicated combinations of the Landau parameters, rather than via the backscattering amplitude, contrary to the case of the specific heat. Near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point, the field dependence acquires a universal form χ^{-1}_s(H)= const- c_2|H|^{3/2}$, with $c_2>0$. This behavior implies a first-order transition into a ferromagnetic state. We esta…
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Eu(1-x)Gd(x)O through the ferromagnetic metal-insulator transition. In the ferromagnetic phase, we observe Fermi surface pockets at the Brillouin zone boundary, consistent with density functional theory, which predicts a half metal. Upon warming into the paramagnetic state, our results reveal a strong momentum-dependent evolution of the electronic structure, where the metallic states at the zone boundary are replaced by pseudogapped states at the Brillouin zone center due to the absence of magnetic long-range order of the Eu 4f moments.
We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the …
The system of interacting spinless fermions hopping on a two-leg ladder exhibits a series of quantum phase transitions when subjected to an external magnetic field. At half filling, these are either U(1) Gaussian phase transitions between two phases with distinct types of long-range order or Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions between ordered and gapless phases.
We consider a theoretical problem of electron-electron scattering time in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) conductor in a magnetic field, perpendicular to its conducting axis. We show that inverse electron-electron scattering time becomes of the order of characteristic electron energy, $1/τ\sim ε\sim T$, in a high magnetic field, directed far from the main crystallographic axes, which indicates breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory. In a magnetic field, directed close to one of the main crystallographic axis, inverse electron-electron scattering time becomes much smaller than characteristic electr…
We present measurements of the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of CeRhSn up to ~ 27 kbar. At low temperatures, the electrical resistivity varies linearly with temperature for all pressures, indicating non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below a temperature Tf ~ 6 K, the electrical resistivity deviates from a linear dependence. We found that the low-temperature feature centered at T = Tf shows a pressure dependence dTf/dP ~ 30 mK/kbar which is typical of canonical spin glasses. This interplay between spin-glass-like and non-Fermi liquid behavior was observed in both CeRhSn and a Ce0.9La…
In heavy fermion materials superconductivity tends to appear when long range magnetic order is suppressed by chemical doping or applying pressure. Here we report heat capacity measurements on diluted alloyes of the heavy fermion superconductor CeRhIn_5;. Heat capacity measurements have been performed on CeRh_{1-y}Ir_{y}In_5; (y <= 0.10) and Ce_{1-x}La_{x}Rh_{1-y}Ir_{y}In_5; (x <= 0.50) in applied fields up to 90 kOe to study the affect of doping and magnetic field on the magnetic ground state. The magnetic phase diagram of CeRh_{0.9}Ir_{0.1}In_5; is consistent with the magnetic structure of Ce…
We perform comprehensive theoretical analysis of high magnetic field behavior of the heavy-fermion (HF) compound YbRh2Si2. At low magnetic fields B, YbRh2Si2 has a quantum critical point related to the suppression of antiferromagnetic ordering at a critical magnetic field. Our calculations of the thermodynamic properties of YbRh2Si2 in wide magnetic field range allow us to straddle a possible metamagnetic transition region and probe the properties of both low-field HF liquid and high-field fully polarized one. Namely, high magnetic fields B\sim B^*\sim 10 T fully polarize corresponding quasipa…
We explain recently observed linear temperature dependence of the nodal Fermi velocity $v_F (T)$ in near-optimally doped cuprates. We argue that it originates from electron-electron interaction, and is a fundamental property of an arbitrary 2D Fermi liquid. We consider a spin-fermion model with the same parameters as in earlier studies, and show that the T term is about 30% at 300K, in agreement with the data. We show that the sub-leading term in $v_F (T)$ is a regular (and small) $T^2$ correction. We also show that at a $2k_F$ quantum-critical point, temperature corrections to the dispersion …
We investigate the behavior of the spectral weight near the Fermi level of NdNiO3 thin films as a function of temperature across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectral weight was found to exhibit thermal hysteresis, similar to that of the dc conductivity. A detailed analysis of the temperature dependence reveals two distinct regimes of spectral loss close to the Fermi level. The temperature evolution of one regime is found to be independent from the MIT.
The formation of heavy fermion bands can occur by means of the conversion of a periodic array of local moments into itinerant electrons via the Kondo effect and the huge consequent Fermi-liquid renormalizations. Leggett predicted for liquid $^3$He that Fermi-liquid renormalizations change in the superconducting state, leading to a temperature dependence of the London penetration depth~$Λ$ quite different from that in the BCS theory. Using Leggett's theory, as modified for heavy fermions, it is possible to extract from the measured temperature dependence of $Λ$ in high quality samples both Land…
A detailed and systematic ARPES investigation of the doping-dependence of the normal state Fermi surface (FS) of modulation-free Bi(Pb)2212 is presented. The FS does not change in topology away from hole-like at any stage. The FS area does not follow the usual curve describing Tc vs x for the hole doped cuprates, but is down-shifted in doping by ca. 0.05 holes per Cu site, indicating the consequences of a significant bilayer splitting of the FS across the whole doping range. The strong k-dependence of the FS width is shown to be doping independent. The relative strength of the shadow FS has a …
Field-angle dependent specific heat measurement has been done on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 down to ~ 0.29 K, in a magnetic field rotating in the tetragonal c-plane. A clear fourfold angular oscillation is observed in the specific heat with the minima (maxima) occurring along the [100] ([110]) directions. Oscillation persists down to low fields H << Hc2, thus directly proving the existence of gap nodes. The results indicate that the superconducting gap symmetry is most probably of dxy type.
A detailed and systematic ARPES investigation of the doping-dependence of the normal state Fermi surface (FS) of modulation-free (Pb,Bi)-2212 is presented. The FS does not change in topology away from hole-like at any stage. The data reveal, in addition, a number of surprises. Firstly the FS area does not follow the usual curve describing Tc vs x for the hole doped cuprates, but is down-shifted in doping by ca. 0.05 holes per Cu site, indicating either the break-down of Luttinger's theorem or the consequences of a significant bi-layer splitting of the FS. Secondly, the strong k-dependence of t…
We report a polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy study of the orbital dependence of the quasiparticles properties in the prototypical multi-band Fermi liquid Sr\textsubscript{2}RuO\textsubscript{4}. We show that the quasiparticle scattering rate displays $ω^{2}$ dependence as expected for a Fermi liquid. Besides, we observe a clear polarization-dependence in the energy and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate and mass, with the $d_{xz/yz}$ orbital derived quasiparticles showing significantly more robust Fermi liquid properties than the $d_{xy}$ orbital derived ones. …
In the tetragonal heavy fermion system CeCoIn5 the unconventional superconducting state is probed by means of muon spin rotation. The pressure dependence (0-1 GPa) of the basal-plane magnetic penetration depth (λ_a), the penetration depth anisotropy (γ=λ_c/λ_a) and the temperature dependence of 1/λ_i^2 (i=a,c) were studied in single crystals. A strong decrease of λ_a with pressure was observed, while γand λ_i^2(0)/λ_i^2(T) are pressure independent. A linear relationship between 1/λ_a^2(270 mK) and Tc was also found. The large decrease of λ_a with pressure is the signature of an increase of the…
We extend the Anderson impurity model to a large-spin Fermi system with spin $f$=3/2, stimulated by the realization of large-spin ultracold Fermi atoms. The condition required for the spontaneous formation of local magnetic moments is examined and the ground state mean-field magnetic phase diagram is explored carefully. We find that the spin-3/2 Fermi system involves magnetic phase regions I, II, and III that correspond to one, two, and three particle/hole occupation, respectively. In addition, it is observed that all the three magnetic phases have four-fold degenerate ground states. Finally, …
We study the Fermi level structure of 2+1-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravity dual of a finite density fermion system is a Dirac field in the background of the dyonic AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In the probe limit the magnetic system can be reduced to the non-magnetic one, with Landau-quantized momenta and rescaled thermodynamical variables. We find that at strong enough magnetic fields, the Fermi surface vanishes and the quasiparticle is lost either through a crossover to conformal regime or through …
We explore the magnetic properties of the Fermi-like liquid represented by the D3-D7' system. The system exhibits interesting magnetic properties such as ferromagnetism and an anomalous Hall effect, which are due to the Chern-Simons term in the effective gravitational action. We investigate the spectrum of quasi-normal modes in the presence of a magnetic field and show that the magnetic field mitigates the instability towards a striped phase. In addition, we find a critical magnetic field above which the zero sound mode becomes massive.
We investigate the effect of anti-ferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality on the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ in line-nodal superconductors, including the cuprates, the iron pnictides, and the heavy-fermion superconductors. The critical magnetic fluctuation renormalizes the current vertex and drastically enhances zero-temperature penetration depth $λ(0)$, which is more remarkable in the iron-pnictide case due to the Fermi-surface topology. Additional temperature ($T$) dependence of the current renormalization makes the expected $T$-linear behavior at low temperatures approaching to $T^{1.5…
We study the spectral and magnetic properties of one-dimensional lattices filled with 2 to 4 fermions (with spin 1/2) per lattice site. We use a generalized Hubbard model that takes account all interactions on a lattice site, and solve the many-particle problem by exact diagonalization. We find an intriguing magnetic phase diagram which includes ferromagnetism, spin-one Heisenberg antiferromagnetism, and orbital antiferromagnetism.
The derivation for the transport coefficients of an electron system in the presence of temperature gradient and the electric and magnetic fields are presented. The Nernst conductivity and the transverse thermoelectric power of the Dirac fermions in graphene under charged impurity scatterings and weak magnetic field are calculated on basis of the self-consistent Born approximation. The result is compared with so far the available experimental data.
We discuss the orbital magnetism and the Hall effect in the weak magnetic field in two dimensional Dirac fermion systems with energy gap. This model is related to the graphene sheet, organic conductors, and $d$-density wave superconductors. We found the strong diamagnetism and finite Hall conductivity even in gapped systems. We also discuss the relation between the weak-magnetic field formalism and the Landau quantization with the Euler-Maclaurin expansion.
We study quantum criticality of the magnetic field induced charge density wave (CDW) order in correlated spinless Dirac fermions on the $π$-flux square lattice at zero temperature as a prototypical example of the magnetic catalysis, by using the infinite density matrix renormalization group. It is found that the CDW order parameter $M(B)$ exhibits an anomalous magnetic field $(B)$ scaling behavior characteristic of the $(2+1)$-dimensional chiral Ising universality class near the quantum critical point, which leads to a strong enhancement of $M(B)$ compared with a mean field result. We also est…
We consider the response of the density of a fermion ensemble to an applied weak static magnetic field. It is known that for non-interacting Fermi gas, this response is fully characterized by the Fermi volume and the Berry curvature on the Fermi surface. Here we show the same result holds for interacting fermions, including Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid, to all orders in perturbation theory. Our result relies only on the assumption of a well-defined Fermi surface and the general analytic properties of quantum field theory, and is completely model independent.
We consider the implications of a phenomenological model self-energy for the charge transport properties of the metallic phase of the overdoped cuprate superconductors. The self-energy is the sum of two terms with characteristic dependencies on temperature, frequency, location on the Fermi surface, and doping. The first term is isotropic over the Fermi surface, independent of doping, and has the frequency and temperature dependence characteristic of a Fermi liquid. The second term is anisotropic over the Fermi surface (vanishing at the same points as the superconducting energy gap), strongly v…
The low temperature dependence of the spin and charge susceptibilities of an anisotropic electron system in two dimensions is analyzed. It is shown that the presence of inflection points at the Fermi surface leads, generically, to a $ T \log T $ dependence, and a more singular behavior, $χ\sim T ^{3/4} \log T$, is also possible. Applications to quasi two-dimensional materials are discussed.
We consider magnetic catalysis in a field-theoretic system of (3+1)-dimensional Dirac fermions with anisotropic kinetic term. By placing the system in a strong external magnetic field, we examine magnetically-induced fermion mass generation. When the coupling anisotropy is strong, in which case the fermions effectively localize on the plane, we find a significant enhancement of the induced mass gap compared to the isotropic four-dimensional case of quantum electrodynamics. As expected on purely dimensional grounds, the mass and critical temperature scale with the square root of the magnetic fi…
