We perform comprehensive theoretical analysis of high magnetic field behavior of the heavy-fermion (HF) compound YbRh2Si2. At low magnetic fields B, YbRh2Si2 has a quantum critical point related to the suppression of antiferromagnetic ordering at a critical magnetic field. Our calculations of the thermodynamic properties of YbRh2Si2 in wide magnetic field range allow us to straddle a possible metamagnetic transition region and probe the properties of both low-field HF liquid and high-field fully polarized one. Namely, high magnetic fields B\sim B^*\sim 10 T fully polarize corresponding quasiparticle band generating Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) state and suppressing HF (actually NFL) one, while at elevating temperatures both HF state and corresponding NFL properties are restored. Our calculations are in good agreement with experimental facts and show that the fermion condensation quantum phase transition is indeed responsible for the observed NFL behavior and quasiparticles survive both high temperatures and high magnetic fields.
A theoretical study has been undertaken of the Peltier effect in normal metal - insulator - heavy fermion metal junctions. The results indicate that, at temperatures below the Kondo temperature, such junctions can be used as electronic microrefrigerators to cool the normal metal electrode and are several times more efficient in cooling than the normal metal - heavy fermion metal junctions.
The microscopic theory of interaction between the heavy fermions and the crystal field excitations in Kondo lattices is presented. It is shown that the heavy-fermion spectrum scaled by the Kondo temperature $T_K$ can be modified by the crystal field excitations with the energy $Δ_{CF}$ provided the inequality $Δ_{CF}<T_K$ is realized. On the base of general description of excitation spectrum the detailed qualitative and quantitative explanation of anisotropic inelastic neutron scattering spectra and low-temperature specific heat of orthorhombic CeNiSn is given. The theory resolves the apparent…
In contrast to the Hubbard model, the extended Hubbard model, which additionally accounts for non-local interactions, lacks systemic studies of thermodynamic properties especially across the metal-insulator transition. Using a variational principle, we perform such a systematic study and describe how non-local interactions screen local correlations differently in the Fermi-liquid and in the insulator. The thermodynamics reveal that non-local interactions are at least in parts responsible for first-order metal-insulator transitions in real materials.
We have shown that the Landau paradigm based upon both the quasiparticle concept and the notion of the order parameter can be used to explain the anomalous behavior of heavy fermion metals. Exploiting this paradigm and the fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) we show that this anomalous behavior is universal and can be used to capture the essential aspects of recent experiments on the heavy-fermion metals at low temperatures. Behind FCQPT a tunneling conductivity between a heavy fermion metal and a simple metallic point can be noticeably dissymmetrical with respect to the chan…
The contribution of anyonic degrees of freedom emerging in the non-Abelian spin sector of a one-dimensional system of interacting fermions carrying both $SU(2)$ spin and $SU(N_f)$ orbital degrees of freedom to the thermodynamic properties of the latter is studied based on the exact solution of the model. For sufficiently small temperatures and magnetic fields the anyons appear as zero energy modes localized at the massive kink excitations [A. M. Tsvelik, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113} (2014) 066401]. From their quantum dimension they are identified as $SU(2)_{N_f}$ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anyons. Th…
We study in this work the ground state entanglement properties of two models of non-interacting fermions moving in one-dimension (1D), that exhibit metal-insulator transitions. We find that entanglement entropy grows either logarithmically or in a power-law fashion in the metallic phase, thus violating the (1D version of) entanglement area law. No such violation is found in the insulating phase. We further find that characteristics of {\em single fermion} states at the Fermi energy (which can {\em not} be obtained from the many-fermion Slater determinant) is captured by the lowest energy singl…
We study the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion metal in the Kondo lattice model. Based on the strong coupling approach we {\it first} diagonalize the Kondo coupling term. Since this strong coupling approach makes the resulting Kondo term {\it relevant}, the Kondo hybridization persists even in the antiferromagnetic metal, indicating that fluctuations of Kondo singlets are not critical in the phase transition. We find that the quantum transition in our strong coupling approach results from {\it softening of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations of localiz…
We present temperature and field dependent heat capacity and magnetization data taken at temperatures down to 50 mK and in an applied magnetic field up to 11.5 Tesla for YbAgGe, a heavy-fermion compound with a field induced quantum critical point. These data clearly indicate that the same electronic degrees of freedom are responsible for the features seen in both specific heat and magnetization data. In addition, they further refine the different boundaries suggested for the H - T phase diagram of YbAgGe through previous, magneto-transport measurements, and allow for further understanding of d…
We study a range of thermodynamic properties (charge susceptibility, specific heat, entropy and spin susceptibility) of the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice at half filling by means of the numerical finite-temperature Lanczos method. We observe clear signatures of a metal-Mott insulator transition in the charge susceptibility, and show that the metallic phase is characterized by a small charge susceptibility, large entropy, low coherence temperature, large renormalized quasiparticle mass, and large spin susceptibility. We show that the local magnetic moment in the metallic p…
Using finite-temperature determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the thermodynamic properties of the extended Hubbard model on the half-filled square lattice in the Slater regime at intermediate coupling. We consider both the case of nearest-neighbor interactions and long-range Coulomb interactions, for coupling strengths in which the presence of non-local interactions still allows us to perform sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we assess a recently proposed scenario from variational calculations in terms of a first-order metal-insulator transi…
The importance of taking into account inter-site $f-f$ hybridization in electron structure calculations for Ce metal and cerium heavy fermion compounds was studied. We demonstrate that for heavy-fermion systems such as cerium compound CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ $f-f$ hybridization can be neglected and Anderson model application is well justified. On another hand for cerium metal $f-f$ hybridization is strong enough to provide the contribution to hybridization function comparable to hybridization between $4f$ and itinerant electrons. We argue that in the case of Ce only the most general Hamiltonian combini…
The perovskite-like transition-metal oxide Gd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ is investigated by measurements of resistivity, specific-heat, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Approaching the metal-to-insulator transition from the metallic regime ($x \geq 0.2$), the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ of the specific heat becomes strongly enhanced and the resistivity increases quadratically at low temperatures, which both are fingerprints of strong electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the dynamic susceptibility, as determined from the Gd$^{3+}$-EPR linewidth, signals the importance of st…
It is shown that the Landau paradigm based upon both the quasiparticle concept and the notion of the order parameter is valid and can be used to explain the anomalous behavior of the heavy fermion metals near quantum critical points. The understanding of this phenomenon has been problematic largely because of the absence of theoretical guidance. Exploiting this paradigm and the fermion condensation quantum phase transition, we investigate the anomalous behavior of the heavy electron liquid near its critical point at different temperatures and applied magnetic fields. We show that this anomalou…
We discuss the metal-insulator transition of the spinless fermion model on the Kagomé lattice at 1/3-filling. The system is analyzed using exact diagonalization, the density-matrix renormalization group methods and the random phase approximation. In the strong-coupling region, the charge-ordered ground state is consistent with the predictions of the effective model with a plaquette order. We find that the qualitative properties of the metal-insulator transition are totally different depending on the sign of the hopping integrals, reflecting the difference of band structure at the Fermi level.
The mechanism of strange metal (SM) with unconventional charge transport near magnetic phase transitions has become an outstanding open problem in correlated electron systems. Recently, an exotic quantum critical SM phase was observed in paramagnetic frustrated heavy-fermion materials near Kondo breakdown. We establish a controlled theoretical framework to this issue via a dynamical large-N fermionic multichannel approach to the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model, where KB transition separates a heavy-Fermi liquid from fermionic spin-liquid state. With Kondo fluctuations being full…
We have shown the existence of localized crystal-field states in conducting magnetic materials coexisting with conduction electrons in CeAl3, UPd2Al3 and YbRh2Si2. We point out that the magnetism is strongly correlated with the very detailed local atomic-scale crystal structure.
We discuss the orbital angular momentum (OAM) and the edge mass current in neutral fermionic superfluids with broken time reversal symmetry. Recent mean field studies imply that total OAM of a uniform superfluid depends on boundary conditions and is not a thermodynamic quantity. We point out that this does not conflict with thermodynamics, because there is no intensive external field conjugate to OAM with which a uniform superfluid is stable in the thermodynamic limit, in sharp contrast to the orbital magnetization in a non-superfluid system. We establish a simple physical picture for the sens…
The linear perturbation renormalization group is used to study spinless two-band fermion chains at half-filling. The model consists of two species of spinless fermions, namely localized f and extended p, and it takes into account the following: the kinetic energy of fermions p, the on-site Coulomb repulsion V between p and f fermions, chemical potentials μp and μf adjusted in such a way that the average of the site occupation = 1, and a weak interchain hopping tx . The average occupation number, the specific heat, and the correlation functions are studied as functions of temperature. For a sin…
The heavy fermion metal β-YbAlB4 exhibits a bulk room temperature conduction electron ESR signal which evolves into an Ising-anisotropic f-electron signal exhibiting hyperfine features at low temperatures. We develop a theory for this phenomenon based on the development of resonant scattering off a periodic array of Kondo centers. We show that the hyperfine structure arises from the scattering off the Yb atoms with non zero nuclear spin, while the constancy of the ESR intensity is a consequence of the presence of CEF excitations of the order of the hybridization strength.
Heavy fermion alloys at critical doping typically exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures, including a logarithmic or power law rise in the ratio of specific heat to temperature as the temperature is lowered. Anomalous specific heat of this type is also observed in a simple class of gravitational dual models that exhibit anisotropic scaling with dynamical critical exponent z > 1.
Spin fluctuations were studied over a wide momentum ($\hbar Q$) and energy ($E$) space in the frustrated $d$-electron heavy-fermion metal LiV$_2$O$_4$ by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the overall $Q$$-$$E$ evolutions near the characteristic $Q=0.6$ Å$^{-1}$ peak and found another weak broad magnetic peak around 2.4 Å$^{-1}$. The data are described by a simple response function, a highly itinerant magnetic form factor, and antiferromagnetic short-range spatial correlations, indicating that heavy-fermion formation is attributable to spin-orbit fluctuations with orbital…
Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the metal-insulator transitions induced by the stripe of charge density in an interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. The stripe will introduce the transport anisotropy and insulating intermediate phase into the system, accompanied by the change of band structure and a peak of density of states around Fermi energy. In the case of strong correlation, stripe exhibits competition with Coulomb repulsion through closing the energy gap and disrupting the magnetic order, and finally drives the system in Mott insulating phase b…
We use quantum Monte Carlo to determine the magnetic and transport properties of coupled square lattice spin and fermionic planes as a model for a metal-insulator interface. Specifically, layers of Ising spins with an intra-layer exchange constant $J$ interact with the electronic spins of several adjoining metallic sheets via a coupling $J_H$. When the chemical potential cuts across the band center, that is, at half-filling, the Néel temperature of antiferromagnetic ($J>0$) Ising spins is enhanced by the coupling to the metal, while in the ferromagnetic case ($J<0$) the metallic degrees of fre…
A comparative study is made on the metal-insulator transition of Dirac fermions in the honeycomb and π-flux Hubbard models at half filling by means of the variational cluster approximation and cluster dynamical impurity approximation. Paying particular attention to the choice of the geometry of solver clusters and the inclusion of particle-bath sites, we show that the direct transition from the Dirac semimetallic state to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator state occurs in these models, and therefore, the spin liquid phase is absent in the intermediate region, in agreement with recent quantum…
We investigate charge transport within some background medium by means of an effective lattice model with a novel form of fermion-boson coupling. The bosons describe fluctuations of a correlated background. By analyzing groundstate and spectral properties of this transport model, we show how a metal-insulator quantum phase transition can occur for the half-filled band case. We discuss the evolution of a mass-asymmetric band structure in the insulating phase and establish connections to the Mott and Peierls transition scenarios.
We analyze general properties of the perturbation expansion for two-dimensional quantum critical metals with singular forward scattering, such as metals at an Ising nematic quantum critical point and metals coupled to a U(1) gauge field. We derive asymptotic properties of fermion loops appearing as subdiagrams of the contributing Feynman diagrams -- for large and small momenta. Substantial cancellations are found in important scaling limits, which reduce the degree of divergence of Feynman diagrams with boson legs. Implementing these cancellations we obtain improved power-counting estimates th…
We study finite-temperature properties of strongly correlated fermions in two-dimensional optical lattices by means of numerical linked cluster expansions, a computational technique that allows one to obtain exact results in the thermodynamic limit. We focus our analysis on the strongly interacting regime, where the on-site repulsion is of the order of or greater than the band width. We compute the equation of state, double occupancy, entropy, uniform susceptibility, and spin correlations for temperatures that are similar to or below the ones achieved in current optical lattice experiments. We…
A tunnelling conductivity between a heavy fermion metal and a simple metallic point is considered. We show that at low temperatures this conductivity can be noticeably dissymmetrical with respect to the change of voltage bias. The dissymmetry can be observed in experiments on the heavy fermion metals whose electronic system has undergone the fermion condensation quantum phase transition.
Motivated by the rapidly growing possibilities for experiments with ultracold atoms in optical lattices we investigate the thermodynamic properties of correlated lattice fermions in the presence of an external spin-dependent random potential. The corresponding model, a Hubbard model with spin-dependent local random potentials, is solved within dynamical mean-field theory. This allows us to present a comprehensive picture of the thermodynamic properties of this system. In particular, we show that for a fixed total number of fermions spin-dependent disorder induces a magnetic polarization. The m…
By generalizing the recently developed path integral molecular dynamics for identical bosons and fermions, we consider the finite-temperature thermodynamic properties of fictitious identical particles with a real parameter $ξ$ interpolating continuously between bosons ($ξ=1$) and fermions ($ξ=-1$). Through general analysis and numerical experiments we find that the average energy may have good analytical property as a function of this real parameter $ξ$, which provides the chance to calculate the thermodynamical properties of identical fermions by an extrapolation with a simple polynomial func…
It is argued that the specific heat of $N$ massless Dirac fermions in 2 spatial dimensions interacting with 1/r Coulomb interactions is suppressed logarithmically relative to its non-interacting counterpart. The (dimensionless) coefficient of the logarithm is calculated analytically in the leading order in large $N$ expansion, but to all orders in $e^2N$, a procedure which takes into account finite temperature screening. Experimental observation of this effect is expected to occur in a single layer graphene embedded in a dielectric medium. Its dependence on the dielectric constant is calculate…
Motivated by the STM experimental data on Bi_2 Sr_2 CaCU_2 O_{8+x} which indicate the tunneling conductance asymmetry sigma(-V) not equal sigma(V), we report that such a behavior can be explained in terms of the boson fermion model. It has been shown in the recent studies, based on various selfconsistent techniques to capture the many-body effects, that the low energy spectrum of the boson fermion model is featured by an appearance of the pseudogap at T^* > T_c. We argue that the pseudogap structure has to exhibit a particle-hole asymmetry. This asymmetry may eventually depend on the boson con…
Systems of interacting fermions can give rise to ground states whose correlations become effectively free-fermion-like in the thermodynamic limit, as shown by Baxter for a class of integrable models that include the one-dimensional XYZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain. Here, we quantitatively analyse this behaviour by establishing the relation between system size and correlation length required for the fermionic Gaussianity to emerge. Importantly, we demonstrate that this behaviour can be observed through the applicability of Wick's theorem and thus it is experimentally accessible. To establish the re…
We investigated the thermodynamic property of the heavy fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ in pulsed high magnetic fields. The superconducting transition in zero field was observed at $T_{\rm c}$=1.65 K as a sharp heat capacity jump. Magnetocaloric effect measurements in pulsed-magnetic fields obviously detected a thermodynamic anomaly accompanied by a first-order metamagnetic transition at $μ$$_{0}$$H_{\rm m}$=36.0 T when the fields are applied nearly along the hard-magnetization $b$-axis. From the results of heat capacity measurements in magnetic fields, we found a drastic diverging electronic h…
We report measurements of low-temperature specific heat on the 4f^2-based heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12. In magnetic fields above 4.5 T in the normal state, distinct anomalies are found which demonstrate the existence of a field-induced ordered phase (FIOP). The Pr nuclear specific heat indicates an enhancement of the 4f magnetic moment in the FIOP. Utilizing a Maxwell relation, we conclude that anomalous entropy, which is expected for a single-site quadrupole Kondo model, is not concealed below 0.16 K in zero field. We also discuss two possible interpretations of the Schottky-like an…
We calculate the entropy in a trapped, resonantly interacting Fermi gas as a function of temperature for a wide range of magnetic fields between the BCS and Bose-Einstein condensation endpoints. This provides a basis for the important technique of adiabatic sweep thermometry, and serves to characterize quantitatively the evolution and nature of the excitations of the gas. The results are then used to calibrate the temperature in several ground breaking experiments on $^6$Li and $^{40}$K.
Composite fermion metal states emerge in quantum Hall bilayers at total Landau level filling factor $ν_T$=1 when the tunneling gap collapses by application of in-plane components of the external magnetic field. Evidence of this transformation is found in the continua of spin excitations observed by inelastic light scattering below the spin-wave mode at the Zeeman energy. The low-lying spin modes are interpreted as quasiparticle excitations with simultaneous changes in spin orientation and composite fermion Landau level index.
We present a study of the compressibility, K, of a two-dimensional hole system which exhibits a metal-insulator phase transition at zero magnetic field. It has been observed that dK/dp changes sign at the critical density for the metal-insulator transition. Measurements also indicate that the insulating phase is incompressible for all values of B. Finally, we show how the phase transition evolves as the magnetic field is varied and construct a phase diagram in the density-magnetic field plane for this system.
Low-temperature thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting Fermi liquids with fermion condensate are investigated. We demonstrate that the spin susceptibility of these systems exhibits the Curie-Weiss law, and the entropy contains a temperature-independent term. The excessive entropy is released at the superconducting transition, enhancing the specific heat jump Delta C and rendering it proportional to the effective Curie constant. The theoretical results are favorably compared with the experimental data on the heavy fermion metal CeCoIn5, as well as He-3 films.
We perform combined resistivity and compressibility studies of two-dimensional hole and electron systems which show the apparent metal-insulator transition - a crossover in the sign of dR/dT with changing density. No thermodynamic anomalies have been detected in the crossover region. Instead, despite a ten-fold difference in r_s, the compressibility of both electrons and holes is well described by the theory of nonlinear screening of the random potential. We show that the resistivity exhibits a scaling behavior near the percolation threshold found from analysis of the compressibility. Notably,…
We demonstrate, that the main universal features of the low temperature experimental $H-T$ phase diagram of CeCoIn5 and other heavy-fermion metals can be well explained using Landau paradigm of quasiparticles. The main point of our theory is that above quasiparticles form so-called fermion-condensate state, achieved by a fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT). When a heavy fermion liquid undergoes FCQPT, the fluctuations accompanying above quantum critical point are strongly suppressed and cannot destroy the quasiparticles. The comparison of our theoretical results with experime…
We study the low-energy behavior of metals coupled to gapless bosons. This problem arises in several contexts in modern condensed matter physics; we focus on the theory of metals near continuous quantum phase transitions (where the boson is the order parameter). In the vicinity of d=3 spatial dimensions, the upper critical dimension of the theory, the ratio of fermion and boson speeds, v/c, acts as an additional control parameter, enabling us to access IR fixed points where this ratio vanishes. This limit corresponds to a non-Fermi liquid coupled to bosons with critical exponents governed by t…
We present a theory of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of quantum spin liquid. The obtained results are in good agreement with experimental facts collected on herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2 and on heavy-fermion metals, and allow us to predict a new scaling in magnetic fields in the dynamic susceptibility. Under the application of strong magnetic fields quantum spin liquid becomes completely polarized. We show that this polarization can be viewed as a manifestation of gapped excitations when investigating the spin-lattice relaxation rate.
The doping-induced metal-insulator transition in two-chain systems of correlated fermions is studied using a solvable limit of the t-J model and the fact that various strong- and weak-coupling limits of the two-chain model are in the same phase, i.e. have the same low-energy properties. It is shown that the Luttinger-liquid parameter K_ρtakes the universal value unity as the insulating state (half-filling) is approached, implying dominant d-type superconducting fluctuations, independently of the interaction strength. The crossover to insulating behavior of correlations as the transition is app…
We study one-dimensional disordered fermions that either undergo metal-insulator transitions or topological phase transitions to become trivial Anderson insulators. We focus on using entanglement to elucidate how the spatial, momentum, and internal degrees of freedom of fermions are affected by the presence of disorder in such cases. We develop entanglement tools that reveal the existence of metallic states in the presence of disorder and further show clear signatures of the corresponding localization transition even in the presence of interactions. In systems where the internal degrees of fre…
We propose that string theory in the background of dyon black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is holographic dual to conformally invariant composite Dirac fermion metal. By utilizing S-duality map, we show that thermodynamic and transport properties of the black hole match with those of composite fermion metal, exhibiting Fermi liquid-like. Built upon Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization condition, we argue that turning on magnetic charges to electric black hole along the orbit of Gamma(2) subgroup of SL(2,Z) is equivalent to attaching even unit of statistical flux quanta …
