The mechanism of strange metal (SM) with unconventional charge transport near magnetic phase transitions has become an outstanding open problem in correlated electron systems. Recently, an exotic quantum critical SM phase was observed in paramagnetic frustrated heavy-fermion materials near Kondo breakdown. We establish a controlled theoretical framework to this issue via a dynamical large-N fermionic multichannel approach to the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model, where KB transition separates a heavy-Fermi liquid from fermionic spin-liquid state. With Kondo fluctuations being fully considered, we find a distinct SM behavior with quasi-linear-in-temperature scattering rate associated with KB. When particle-hole symmetry is present, signatures of a critical spin-liquid SM phase as $T \rightarrow 0$ are revealed with $ω/T$ scaling extended to a wide range. We attribute these features to the interplay of critical bosonic charge (Kondo) fluctuations and gapless fermionic spinons. The implications of our results for the experiments are discussed.
The paramagnetic phase of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model is investigated for electron densities below half-filling using a new mean-field approach. The physical parameters that govern this phase are identified to be the spin-flip processes of both the localized and itinerant spins. A nonmagnetic quantum state, where the local magnetization is a rotating vector with a nonzero average length, is proposed in order to describe this phase. This state does not break SU(2) symmetry in agreement with Mermin-Wagner theorem. The line boundary between this phase and the ferromagnetic phase is ca…
An effective Hamiltonian for the localized spins in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model is derived via a unitary transformation involving a bosonization of delocalized conduction electrons. The effective Hamiltonian is shown to reproduce all the features of the model as identified in various numerical simulations, and provides much new information on the ferro- to paramagnetic phase transition and the paramagnetic phase.
The strange metal phases found to develop in a wide range of materials near a quantum critical point (QCP), have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs has led to a belief that they are highly entangled quantum states. Ferromagnets, by contrast are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, for they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first order phase transitions. Here, we provide compelling evidence that the stoichiometric heavy fermion fer…
We study the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model as function of the exchange coupling, the band filling, and the quasimomentum in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method, we compute the dispersion relation of the quasiparticles, their lifetimes, and the Z-factor. As a main result, we provide evidence for the existence of the spinpolaron at partial band fillings. We find that the quasiparticle lifetime differs by orders of magnitude between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase and depends strongly on the quas…
Doping Kondo lattice system CeRu2Si2 with Rh-8% (Ce(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2) leads to drastic consequences due to the mismatch of the lattice parameters between CeRu2Si2 and CeRh2Si2. A large variety of experiments clarifies the unusual properties of the ground state induced by the magnetic field from longitudinal antiferromagnetic (AF) mode at H = 0 to polarized paramagnetic phase in very high magnetic field. The separation between AF phase, paramagnetic phase and polarized paramagnetic phase varying with temperature, magnetic field and pressure is discussed on the basis of the experiments down to …
Numerical investigation on the thermodynamic properties of an Ising spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice is reported. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we investigated the magnetic phases at 1/3-filling. We identified two successive transitions from high-temperature paramagnetic state to a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like phase in an intermediate temperature range and to a partially disordered phase at a lower temperature. The partially disordered state is characterized by coexistence of antiferromagnetic hexagons and paramagnetic sites with period $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$. We compare the results…
Within a mean-field approximation, the ground state and finite temperature phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model have been carefully studied as functions of the Kondo coupling $J$ and the conduction electron concentration $n_{c}$. In addition to the conventional hybridization between local moments and itinerant electrons, a staggered hybridization is proposed to characterize the interplay between the antiferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect. As a result, a heavy fermion antiferromagnetic phase is obtained and separated from the pure antiferromagnetic ordered phase …
We report the temperature-pressure-magnetic field phase diagram made from electrical resistivity measurements for the ferromagnetic (FM) Kondo lattice CeRuPO. The ground state at zero field changes from the FM state to another state, which is suggested to be an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, above ~0.7 GPa, and the magnetically ordered state is completely suppressed at ~2.8 GPa. In addition to the collapse of the AFM state under pressure and a magnetic field, a metamagnetic (MM) transition from a paramagnetic state to a polarized paramagnetic state appears. CeRuPO will give us a rich playgroun…
We investigate the valence transition in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator through slave-boson analysis of periodic Anderson model. By including the effect of intra-atomic Coulomb correlation $U_{fc}$ between conduction and local electrons, we find a first-order valence transition from Kondo region to mixed valence upon ascending of local level above a critical $U_{fc}$, and this valence transition usually occurs very close to or simultaneously with a topological transition. Near the parameter region of zero-temperature valence transition, rise of temperature can generate a thermal…
We study quantum phase transitions from easy-plane antiferromagnetic metals to paramagnetic metals in Kondo-Heisenberg lattice systems. If the paramagnetic metal is a fractionalized Fermi liquid then the universal critical properties of the phase transition are unaffected for a weak Kondo coupling even when the Fermi surface intersects the magnetic zone boundary. This is in striking contrast to the conventional theory of phase transitions between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic metals where any Kondo coupling is strongly relevant, and leads to a Landau-damped `Hertz-Millis' theory. The elec…
We find evidence that superconductivity intrudes into the paramagnetic-to-magnetic transition of the Kondo lattice model if magnetic frustration is added. Specifically, we study by variational method the model on a square lattice in the presence of both nearest- ($t$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($t^\prime$) hopping of the conduction electrons. We find that when $t^\prime/t$ is finite a $d$-wave superconducting dome emerges between the magnetic and paramagnetic metal phases and close to the compensated regime, i.e., the number of conduction electrons equal to the number of localized spin-1/2 mom…
Quantum criticality beyond the Landau paradigm represents a fundamental problem in condensed matter and statistical physics. Heavy fermion systems with multipolar degrees of freedom can play an important role in the search for its universal description. We consider a Kondo lattice model with both spin and quadrupole degrees of freedom, which we show to exhibit an antiferroquadrupolar phase. Using a field theoretical representation of the model, we find that Kondo couplings are exactly marginal in the renormalization group sense in this phase. This contrasts with the relevant nature of the Kond…
The optical conductivity in a Kondo lattice system is presented in terms of the memory function formalism. I use Kondo-lattice Hamiltonian for explicit calculations. I compute the frequency dependent imaginary part of the memory function ($M^{\p\p}(\om)$), and the real part of the memory function $M^{\p}(\om)$ by using the Kramers-Kronig transformation. Optical conductivity is computed using the generalized Drude formula. I find that high frequency tail of the optical conductivity scales as $σ(\om) \sim \frac{1}{\om}$ instead of the Drude $\frac{1}{\om^2}$ law. Such a behaviour is seen in stra…
We describe the transition from a ferromagnetic phase, to a disordered para- magnetic phase, which occurs in one-dimensional Kondo lattice models with partial conduction band filling. The transition is the quantum order-disorder transition of the transverse-field Ising chain, and reflects double-exchange ordered regions of localized spins being gradually destroyed as the coupling to the conduction electrons is reduced. For incommensurate conduction band filling, the low-energy properties of the localized spins near the transition are dominated by anomalous ordered (disordered) regions of local…
The transport properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in one dimension are studied via bosonization methods. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which normally appear because of the RKKY interactions, are explicitly taken into account as a direct exchange between the ``core'' spins. It is shown that in the paramagnetic regime with the local antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the resistivity decays exponentially as the temperature increases while in the ferromagnetic regime the system is an almost perfect conductor. %A non-perturbative description of localized spin polarons %in the par…
Hexagonal CeRhSn with paramagnetic $4f$ moments on a distorted Kagome lattice displays zero-field quantum critical behavior related to geometrical frustration. We report high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements under multiextreme conditions such as uniaxial stress up to 200 MPa, temperatures down to 0.1 K and magnetic fields up to 10 T. Under uniaxial stress along the $a$-direction, quantum criticality disappears and a complex magnetic phase diagram arises with a sequence of phases below 1.2 K and fields between 0 and 3 T ($\parallel a$). Since the Kondo coupling inc…
We demonstrate the existence of metallic spin density waves (SDWs) in the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice for a wide range of parameters by means of real space dynamical mean field theory. In these SDWs, the spin polarization as well as the charge density depend on the lattice site and are modulated along one direction of the square lattice. We show that within this phase of metallic SDWs the Fermi surface changes from small to large, when the coupling strength is increased. Furthermore, the transition between the large Fermi-surface SDW phase and the paramagnetic phase is of second or…
We study the Kondo alloy model on a square lattice using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for Kondo substitution and disorder effects, together with static mean-field approximations. We computed and analyzed photoemission properties as a function of electronic filling $n_c$, Kondo impurity concentration $x$, and strength of Kondo temperature $T_K$. We provide a complete description of the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) signals expected in the paramagnetic Kondo phases. By analyzing the Fermi surface, we observe the Lifshitz-like transition predicted previously for strong $…
Recent experimental work has brought the twin issues of the origin of non-Lifshitz-Kosevich scaling in de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) and its precise relation to anomalously broad non-quasiparticle spectral features in "strange" metals, to the forefront. Here, we revisit these issues in the specific context of a "local" quantum critical phase in an extended periodic Anderson model (EPAM). In contrast to the famed Kondo-RKKY scenarios for local quantum criticality, strong local valence fluctuations cause Kondo destruction in the EPAM. We uncover a common underlying element, namely, the Kondo-destruc…
Recent experiments on quantum criticality in the Ge-substituted heavy-electron material YbRh2Si2 under magnetic field have revealed a possible non-Fermi liquid (NFL) strange metal (SM) state over a finite range of fields at low temperatures, which still remains a puzzle. In the SM region, the zero-field antiferromagnetism is suppressed. Above a critical field, it gives way to a heavy Fermi liquid with Kondo correlation. The T (temperature)-linear resistivity and the T-logarithmic followed by a power-law singularity in the specific heat coefficient at low T, salient NFL behaviours in the SM reg…
We study the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic Kondo insulator phases of the Kondo lattice model on the cubic lattice at half-filling using the cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) with numerical renormalization group (NRG) as the impurity solver, focusing on the fine details of the spectral function and self-energy. We find that the non-local correlations increase the gap in both the antiferromagnetic and the Kondo insulator phase and shrink the extent of the antiferromagnetic phase in the phase diagram but do not alter any properties qualitatively. The agreement between the nume…
We report the results of extensive dynamical cluster approximation calculations, based on a quantum Monte Carlo solver, for the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model. Our particular cluster implementation renders possible the simulation of spontaneous antiferromagnetic symmetry breaking. By explicitly computing the single-particle spectral function both in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, we follow the evolution of the Fermi surface across this magnetic transition. The results, computed for clusters up to 16 orbitals, show clear evidence for the existence of three distinct Fermi su…
Arguments are presented that in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model f-electron spins participate in filling of the Fermi sea. It is shown that in its paramagnetic phase this model belongs to the spin-1/2 Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid universality class. The ratio of the spin and charge velocities v_s/v_c and K_c are estimated to be of the order of (T_K/E_F)^{1/2}.
We carefully consider the interplay between ferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect in the conventional Kondo lattice systems at finite temperatures. Within an effective mean-field theory for small conduction electron densities, a complete phase diagram has been determined. In the ferromagnetic ordered phase, there is a characteristic temperature scale to indicate the presence of the Kondo screening effect. We further find two distinct ferromagnetic long-range ordered phases coexisting with the Kondo screening effect: spin fully polarized and partially polarized states. A continuous phas…
The one dimensional dilute Kondo lattice model is investigated by means of bosonization for different dilution patterns of the array of impurity spins. The physical picture is very different if a commensurate or incommensurate doping of the impurity spins is considered. For the commensurate case, the obtained phase diagram is verified using a non-Abelian density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. The paramagnetic phase widens at the expense of the ferromagnetic phase as the $f$-spins are diluted. For the incommensurate case, antiferromagnetism is found at low doping, which distinguishes t…
We study the magnetic quantum phase transition in an anisotropic Kondo lattice model. The dynamical competition between the RKKY and Kondo interactions is treated using an extended dynamic mean field theory (EDMFT) appropriate for both the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. A quantum Monte Carlo approach is used, which is able to reach very low temperatures, of the order of 1% of the bare Kondo scale. We find that the finite-temperature magnetic transition, which occurs for sufficiently large RKKY interactions, is first order. The extrapolated zero-temperature magnetic transition, on t…
We determine the boundary of the fully polarized ferromagnetic ground state in the one dimensional Kondo lattice model at partial conduction electron band filling by using a newly developed infinite size DMRG method which conserves the total spin quantum number. The obtained paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase boundary is below $J \approx 3.5$ for the whole range of band filling. By this we solve the controversy in the phase diagram over the extent of the ferromagnetic region close to half filling.
The possibility of charge order is theoretically examined for the Kondo lattice model in two dimensions, which does not include bare repulsive interactions. Using two complementary numerical methods, we find that charge order appears at quarter filling in an intermediate Kondo coupling region. The charge ordered ground state is an insulator exhibiting an antiferromagnetic order at charge-poor sites, while the paramagnetic charge-ordered state at finite temperatures is metallic with pseudogap behavior. We confirm that the stability of charge order is closely related with the local Kondo-singlet…
We present an effective field theory for the Kondo lattice, which can exhibit, in a certain range of parameters, a non Fermi liquid paramagnetic phase at the brink of a zero temperature Anti Ferromagnetic (AF) transition. The model is derived in a natural way from the bosonic Kondo-Heisenberg model, in which the Kondo resonances are treated as true (but damped) Grassmann fields. One loop Renormalization Group (RG) treatment of this model gives a phase diagram for the Kondo lattice as a function of $ J_K $ where, for $ J_K< J_c$ the system shows AF order, for $J_K> J_1$ one has the heavy electr…
The quantum phase transition between paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropy in the intersite exchange is studied within the framework of extended dynamical mean-field theory. Nonperturbative numerical solutions at zero temperature point to a continuous transition for both two- and three-dimensional magnetism. In the former case, the transition is associated with critical local physics, characterized by a vanishing Kondo scale and by an anomalous exponent in the dynamics close in value to that measured in heavy-fermion CeCu_{5.9}Au_{0.1}.
The phase diagram of the two-leg Kondo ladder is investigated using computational techniques. Ferromagnetism is present, but only at small conduction electron densities and robust Kondo coupling $J$. For densities $n\gtrsim0.4$ and any Kondo coupling, a paramagnetic phase is found. We also observed spin dimerization at densities $n$=1/4 and $n$=1/2. The spin structure factor at small $J$ peaks at $\vec{q}$=$(2n,0)π$ for $n\lesssim0.5$, and at $\vec{q}$=$(n,1)π$ for $n\gtrsim0.5$. The charge structure factor suggests that electrons behave as free particles with spin-1/2 (spin-0) for small (larg…
Paramagnetic impurities in a quantum spin-liquid can result in Kondo effects with highly unusual properties. We have studied the effect of locally exchange-coupling a paramagnetic impurity with the spin-1/2 honeycomb Kitaev model in its gapless spin-liquid phase. The (impurity) scaling equations are found to be insensitive to the sign of the coupling. The weak and strong coupling fixed points are stable, with the latter corresponding to a noninteracting vacancy and an interacting, spin-1 defect for the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases respectively. The ground state in the strong coupl…
We present some preliminary results on the phase diagram of the 2D S=1/2 Kondo lattice model at finite doping. As a starting point the Hamiltonian is written in terms of local spin and charge excitations, and the interactions between these modes are subsequently treated in various perturbative schemes. We find that a paramagnetic-magnetic quantum phase transition does occur, and, at least on a superficial level, the Kondo effect does not break down at the critical point. The latter result however might well be a consequence of the inherent bias of our starting point and/or the level of approxi…
We report the existence of the charge density wave (CDW) in the ground state of 1D Kondo lattice model at the filling of n=0.75 in the weak coupling region. The CDW is driven by the effective Coulomb repulsion mediated by the localized spins. Based on our numerical results using the density matrix renormalization group method, we show that the CDW phase appears in the paramagnetic region previously known as the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The emergence of this phase serves as an example of CDW phase induced without bare repulsive interactions, and enriches the phase diagram of the 1D Kondo latt…
We present an Ising-like intermediate phase for one-dimensional Kondo insulator systems. Resulting from a spinon splitting, its low-energy excitations are critical Ising modes, whereas the triplet sector has a spectral gap. It should occur as long as the RKKY oscillation amplitude dominates over any direct exchange between localized spins. The chiral fixed point, however, becomes unstable in the far Infra-Red limit due to prevalent fluctuations among localized spins which induce gapless triplet excitations in the spectrum. Based on previous numerical results, we obtain a paramagnetic disordere…
We report the synthesis and the magnetic properties of single crystalline CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ and their non magnetic La-analogs. The single crystals of these quaternary compounds were grown using Al-Si binary eutectic as flux. The anisotropic magnetic properties of the cerium compounds were explored in detail by means of magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistivity and heat capacity measurements. Both CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ undergo two antiferromagnetic transitions, first from the paramagnetic to an antiferromagn…
Recent studies of heavy-fermion systems with tunable quantum fluctuations have focused on a variety of zero-temperature phase transitions that involve not only the onset of magnetic order but also the destruction of Kondo entanglement. Motivated by these developments, we investigate the effect of enhanced quantum fluctuations induced by a transverse magnetic field in an Ising-anisotropic Kondo lattice model, solved within an extended dynamical mean field theory using the numerical renormalization group. A line of locally critical points describes a direct transition from a Kondo-screened param…
Single crystals of the new compound CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 have been grown by high-temperature solution growth method using a eutectic Al-Si mixture as flux. This compound is derived from the binary CeSi2 (tetragonal ThSi2-type, Pearson symbol tI12, space group I41/amd) obtained by partial substitution of Si by Cu and Al atoms but showing full occupation of the Si crystal site (8e). While CeSi2 is a well-known valence-fluctuating paramagnetic compound, the CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 phase orders ferromagnetically at TC = 9.3 K. At low temperatures the easy-axis of magnetization is along the a-axis, wh…
The electronic structure of perovskite manganese oxides is investigated in terms of a Kondo lattice model with ferromagnetic Hund coupling and antiferromagnetic exchange between $t_{2g}$-spins using a finite temperature diagonalization technique. Results for the dynamic structure factor are consistent with recent neutron scattering experiments for the bilayer manganite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ . The susceptibility shows Curie-Weiss behaviour and is used to derive a phase diagram. In the paramagnetic phase carriers are characterized as ferromagnetic polarons in an antiferromagnetic spin …
We investigate the paramagnetic periodic Anderson model using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the modified perturbation theory which interpolates between the weak and strong coupling limits. For the symmetric PAM, the ground state is always a singlet state. However, as function of the hybridization strength, a crossover from collective to local Kondo screening is found. Reducing the number of conduction electrons, the local Kondo singlets remain stable. The unpaired f-electrons dominate the physics of the system. For very low conduction electron densities, a large increase …
Strange metal behavior arises in heavy fermion metals close to antiferromagnetic transitions. An increasing amount of experiments indicates a link of such behavior to a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point. To shed light on this intriguing problem, we study the 2D Kondo-Heisenberg model using a dynamical large-N multichannel Schwinger boson approach. We identify and characterize the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state to a Kondo-dominated paramagnetic state, and attribute a jump in certain phase shift to Kondo breakdown. In addition, we calculate trans…
We consider a heterostructure of a metal and a paramagnetic Mott insulator using an adaptation of dynamical mean field theory to describe inhomogeneous systems. The metal can penetrate into the insulator via the Kondo effect. We investigate the scaling properties of the metal-insulator interface close to the critical point of the Mott insulator. At criticality, the quasiparticle weight decays as 1/x^2 with distance x from the metal within our mean field theory. Our numerical results (using the numerical renormalization group as an impurity solver) show that the prefactor of this power law is e…
We investigate possible topological superconductivity in the Kondo-Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, where the Kitaev spin liquid is coupled to conduction electrons via the Kondo coupling. We use the self-consistent Abrikosov-fermion mean-field theory to map out the phase diagram. Upon increasing the Kondo coupling, a first order transition occurs from the decoupled phase of spin liquid and conduction electrons to a ferromagnetic topological superconductor of Class D with a single chiral Majorana edge mode. This is followed by a second order transition into a paramagnetic topological supe…
Kondo insulators are emerging as a simplified setting to study both magnetic and metal-to-insulator quantum phase transitions. Here, we study a half-filled Kondo lattice model defined on a magnetically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland geometry. We determine a "global" phase diagram that features a variety of zero-temperature phases; these include Kondo-destroyed antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic metallic phases in addition to the Kondo-insulator phase. Our result provides the theoretical basis for understanding how applying pressure to a Kondo insulator can close its hybridization gap, liberate …
We analyze the magnetically ordered phases in the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice around quarter filling using the dynamical mean field theory. We find that close to quarter filling besides the paramagnetic phase, at least three magnetic phases compete. These phases are a ferromagnetic state, a partial Kondo screened state, which is a combination of charge order and magnetic order, and a striped magnetic phase, which is ferromagnetically ordered in one direction and antiferromagnetically in the other direction. We analyze the spectral properties of these states and show that the PKS st…
We discuss the paramagnetic and Neel-ordered phases of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian on the 2D square lattice by means of bond Fermions. In the doped case we find two antiferromagnetic solutions, the first one with small ordered moment, heavy bands, and an antiferromagetically folded large Fermi surface - i.e. including the localized spins - the second one with large ordered moment, light bands and an antiferromagnetically folded conduction electron-only Fermi surface. The zero temperature phase diagram as a function of Kondo coupling and conduction electron density shows first and second orde…
We have studied the effect of anisotropies on the quantum phase transition of the Kondo necklace model in dimensions D=1, 2 and 3. Both the anisotropy $δ$ of the inter-site interaction term and anisotropy $Δ$ of the on-site Kondo interaction have been included. We use a bond operator method with constraints implemented in mean field approximation. Starting from the paramagnetic phase we determine the critical ratio $(t/J)_c$ of the quantum critical point and associated scaling exponents of the Kondo-singlet gap. We show that in the case of easy-axis type anisotropy $δ>1$ a qualitatively new be…
We study the phase diagram of the Kondo-lattice model with nearest-neighbor hopping in the square lattice by means of the variational Monte Carlo technique. Specifically, we analyze a wide class of variational wave functions that allow magnetic and superconducting order parameters, so to assess the possibility that superconductivity might emerge close to the magnetic instability, as often observed in heavy fermion systems. Indeed, we do find evidence of d-wave superconductivity in the paramagnetic sector, i.e., when magnetic order is not allowed in the variational wave function. However, when …
The paramagnetic metallic phase of the Anderson-Hubbard model (AHM) is investigated using a non-perturbative local moment approach within the framework of dynamical mean field theory with a typical medium. Our focus is on the breakdown of the metallic phase near the metal-insulators transition as seen in the single-particle spectra, scattering rates and the associated distribution of Kondo scales. We demonstrate the emergence of a universal, underlying low energy scale, $T_K^{peak}$. This lies close to the peak of the distribution of Kondo scales obtained within the metallic phase of the param…
The Ising-like anisotropy parameter $δ$ in the Kondo necklace model is analyzed using the bond-operator method at zero and finite temperatures for arbitrary $d$ dimensions. A decoupling scheme on the double time Green's functions is used to find the dispersion relation for the excitations of the system. At zero temperature and in the paramagnetic side of the phase diagram, we determine the spin gap exponent $νz\approx0.5$ in three dimensions and anisotropy between $0\leqδ\leq1$, a result consistent with the dynamic exponent $z=1$ for the Gaussian character of the bond-operator treatment. At lo…
We analyze the effects of site-dilution disorder on the thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional Kondo necklace using finite-temperature stochastic series expansion. Results will be discussed for the dependence on dilution concentration, temperature, and Kondo exchange-coupling strength of the uniform susceptibility, the staggered structure factor, and the Chakravarty-Halperin-Nelson ratio. Dilution is shown to induce effective free-spin clusters in the gapped phase of the clean system with a low-temperature Curie constant renormalized below 1/4. Furthermore, dilution is demonstrated to…
The Kondo-lattice model, which couples a lattice of localized magnetic moments to conduction electrons, is often used to describe heavy-fermion systems. Because of the interplay between Kondo physics and magnetic order it displays very complex behavior and is notoriously hard to solve. The ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model, with a ferromagnetic coupling between the local moments, describes a phase transition from a paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnetic one as a function of either temperature or the ferromagnetic local-moment coupling. At zero temperature, this is a quantum phase transition tha…
Scaling equations for the Kondo lattice in the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases are derived to two-loop order with account of spin dynamics. The results are applied to describe various mechanisms of the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the multichannel Kondo-lattice model where a fixed point occurs in the weak-coupling region. The corresponding temperature dependences of electronic and magnetic properties are discussed. The model describes naturally formation of a magnetic state with soft boson mode and small moment value. An important role of Van Hove singularities in the magnon…
We use the dynamical cluster approximation, with a quantum Monte Carlo cluster solver on clusters of up to 16 orbitals, to investigate the evolution of the Fermi surface across the magnetic order-disorder transition in the two-dimensional doped Kondo lattice model. In the paramagnetic phase we observe the generic hybridized heavy fermion band structure with large Luttinger volume. In the antiferromagnetic phase, the heavy fermion band drops below the Fermi surface giving way to hole pockets centered around k=(pi/2,pi/2) and equivalent points. In this phase Kondo screening does not break down b…
Employing the density matrix renormalization group method and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we study the phase diagram of the SU(2)xSU(2) Kondo lattice model in one dimension. We show that, at quarter filling, the system can exist in two phases depending on the coupling strength. The weak-coupling phase is dominated by RKKY exchange correlations while the strong-coupling phase is characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations of the channel degree of freedom. These two phases are separated by a quantum critical point. For conduction-band fillings of less than one quarter, we fin…
