The electroweak model is formulated on the nonlinearly realized gauge group SU(2) X U(1). This implies that in perturbation theory no Higgs field is present. The paper provides the effective action at the tree level, the Slavnov Taylor identity (necessary for the proof of unitarity), the local functional equation (used for the control of the amplitudes involving the Goldstone bosons) and the subtraction procedure (nonstandard, since the theory is not power-counting renormalizable). Particular attention is devoted to the number of independent parameters relevant for the vector mesons; in fact there is the possibility of introducing two mass parameters. With this choice the relation between the ratio of the intermediate vector meson masses and the Weinberg angle depends on an extra free parameter. We briefly outline a method for dealing with γ_5 in dimensional regularization. The model is formulated in the Landau gauge for sake of simplicity and conciseness: the QED Ward identity has a simple and intriguing form.
We evaluate at one loop the self-energies in generic D dimensions for the W,Z mesons in the Electroweak model where the gauge group is nonlinearly realized. In this model the Higgs boson parameters are absent, while a second mass parameter appears together with a scale for the radiative corrections. We estimate these parameters in a simplified fit on leptons and gauge bosons data. We check physical unitarity and the absence of infrared divergences. Landau gauge is used.
The minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) is extended by including an additional pair of constrained Higgs doublet superfields through which the electroweak symmetry is nonlinearly realized. The superpotential couplings of this constrained Higgs doublet pair to the MSSM Higgs doublet pair catalyze the later nontrivial vacuum expectation values. The mass spectrum of the Higgs scalars and Higgsino-gaugino sector is presented for several choices of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking and Higgs superpotential mass parameters. The effect of the the additional constrained fields and multiple vacuum…
In this paper we evaluate the self-energy of the vector mesons at one loop in our recently proposed subtraction scheme for massive nonlinearly realized SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We check the fulfillment of physical unitarity. The resulting self-mass can be compared with the value obtained in the massive Yang-Mills theory based on the Higgs mechanism, consisting in extra terms due to the presence of the Higgs boson (tadpoles included). Moreover we evaluate all the one-loop counterterms necessary for the next order calculations. By construction they satisfy all the equations of the model (Slavnov…
A consistent strategy for the subtraction of the divergences in the nonlinearly realized Electroweak Model in the loop expansion is presented. No Higgs field enters into the perturbative spectrum. The local functional equation (LFE), encoding the invariance of the SU(2) Haar measure under local left SU(2) transformations, the Slavnov-Taylor identity, required in order to fulfill physical unitarity, and the Landau gauge equation hold in the nonlinearly realized theory. The quantization is performed in the Landau gauge for the sake of simplicity and elegance. The constraints on the admissible in…
We consider a minimal nonlinearly realized electroweak theory where mass generation happens à la Stueckelberg. Deformation of the nonlinearly realized gauge symmetry is controlled by functional methods. The Weak Power Counting allows to select uniquely the Hopf algebra of the theory and gives definite predictions on the Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) sector of the theory: the latter includes one CP-odd and two charged physical scalars (in addition to the Higgs-like CP-even resonance). The model interpolates between a purely Stueckelberg and a Higgs scenario. It can be used in order to check w…
We provide nonlinear realization of supergravity with an arbitrary number of supersymmetries by means of coset construction. The number of gravitino degrees of freedom counts the number of supersymmetries, which will be possibly probed in future experiments. We also consider goldstino embedding in the construction to discuss the relation to nonlinear realization with rigid supersymmetries.
Long ago Coleman, Callan, Wess and Zumino (CCWZ) constructed the general effective lagrangian for nonlinearly realized symmetry by finding all possible nonlinear representations of the broken group G which become linear when restricted to the unbroken group H. However, in the case of a single Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB), which corresponds to a broken U(1), the effective lagrangian can also be obtained by imposing a constant shift symmetry. In this work we generalize the shift symmetry approach to multiple NGBs and show that, when they furnish a linear representation of H that can be embedded i…
We propose a subtraction scheme for a massive Yang-Mills theory realized via a nonlinear representation of the gauge group (here SU(2)). It is based on the subtraction of the poles in D-4 of the amplitudes, in dimensional regularization, after a suitable normalization has been performed. Perturbation theory is in the number of loops and the procedure is stable under iterative subtraction of the poles. The unphysical Goldstone bosons, the Faddeev-Popov ghosts and the unphysical mode of the gauge field are expected to cancel out in the unitarity equation. The spontaneous symmetry breaking parame…
We present the lattice formulation of effective Lagrangians in which chiral symmetry is realized nonlinearly on the fermion fields. In this framework both the Wilson term removing unphysical doubler fermions and the fermion mass term do not break chiral symmetry. Our lattice formulation allows us to address non-perturbative questions in effective theories of baryons interacting with pions and in models involving constitutent quarks interacting with pions and gluons. With the presented methods, a system containing a non-zero density of static baryons interacting with pions can be studied on the…
That the scalar field theories with no dimensional couplings possess local scale invariance (LSI) via the curvature gauging is utilized to show that the Goldstone boson, released by the spontaneous LSI breakdown, is swallowed by the spacetime curvature in order to generate Newton's constant in the same spirit as the induction of vector boson masses via spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking. For Einstein gravity to be reproduced correctly, the Goldstone boson of spontaneous LSI breaking must be endowed with ghost dynamics. The matter sector, taken to be the standard model spectrum, gains full LSI…
We present a finite-energy electroweak-monopole solution obtained by considering non-linear extensions of the hypercharge sector of the Electroweak Theory, based on logarithmic and exponential versions of electrodynamics. We find constraints for a class of non-linear extensions and also work out an estimate for the monopole mass in this scenario. We finally derive a lower bound for the energy of the monopole and discuss the simpler case of a Dirac magnetic charge.
Effective Lagrangians containing arbitrary interactions of massive vector fields are quantized within the Hamiltonian path integral formalism. It is proven that correct Hamiltonian quantization of these models yields the same result as naive Lagrangian quantization (Matthews's theorem). This theorem holds for models without gauge freedom as well as for (linearly or nonlinearly realized) spontaneously broken gauge theories. The Stueckelberg formalism, a procedure to rewrite effective Lagrangians in a gauge invariant way, is reformulated within the Hamiltonian formalism as a transition from a se…
Chiral representations are the key in obtaining light fermions from some ultra-violet completed theories. The well-known chiral example is one family set of fifteen chiral fields in the standard model. We find a new chiral theory SU(2)$_{\rm dark}\times$U(1)$_Q$ with sixteen chiral fields, which does not have any gauge and gravitational anomalies. The group SU(2)$_{\rm dark}\times$U(1)$_Q$ may belong to the dark sector, and we present a derivation of the spectrum from the E$_8\times$E$_8'$ hetrotic string. Necessarily, there appear two degrees at low energy: two dark Z's, or a dark Z plus a da…
We propose a sensitive way to test the anomalous HVV couplings (V=W^\pm, Z^0) of the Higgs boson (H), which can arise from either the dimension-3 effective operator in a nonlinearly realized Higgs sector or the dimension-6 effective operators in a linearly realized Higgs sector, via studying the VV scattering processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show that, with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb^{-1} and sufficient kinematical cuts for suppressing the backgrounds, studying the process pp \to W^+ W^+ j j \to ł^+ νł^+ νj j can probe the anomalous HWW couplings at a few tens of p…
We show that in 3-3-1 models there exist a natural relation among the $SU(3)_L$ coupling constant $g$, the electroweak mixing angle $θ_W$, the mass of the $W$, and one of the vacuum expectation values, which implies that those models can be realized at low energy scales and, in particular, even at the electroweak scale. So that, being that symmetries realized in Nature, new physics may be really just around the corner.
We introduce a physical scalar sector in a SU(2)xU(1) electroweak theory in which the gauge group is realized non linearly. By invoking theoretical as well as experimental constraints, we build a phenomenologically viable model in which a minimum of four scalar resonances appear, and the mass of the CP even scalar is controlled by a vacuum expectation value; however, the masses of all other particles (both matter as well as vector boson fields) are unrelated to spontaneous symmetry breaking and generated by the Stückelberg mechanism. We evaluate in this model the CP-even scalar decay rate to t…
We propose a sensitive way to test the anomalous HVV couplings (V=W(+/-),Z(0)) of the Higgs boson (H), which can arise from either the dimension-3 effective operator in a nonlinearly realized Higgs sector or the dimension-6 effective operators in a linearly realized Higgs sector, via studying the VV scattering processes at the CERN LHC. The gold-plated pure leptonic decay modes of the final state weak bosons in the processes pp->VVjj are studied. For comparison, we also analyze the constraints from the precision electroweak data, the expected precision of the measurements of the Higgs boson pr…
Using gauge invariant effective Lagrangians in 1+3 dimensions describing the Standard Model in 1+4 dimensions, we explore dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. The Top Quark Seesaw model arises naturally, as well as the full CKM structure. We include a discussion of effects of warping, and indicate how other dynamical schemes may also be realized.
We map the parameter space that leads to stable Z-vortices in the electroweak model. For $sin^2 θ_W = 0.23$, we find that the strings are unstable for a Higgs mass larger than 24 GeV. Given the latest constraints on the Higgs mass from LEP, this shows that, if the standard electroweak model is realized in Nature, the Z-vortex (in the bare model) is unstable.
If neutrino masses are realized through the see-saw mechanism, can the right-handed neutrinos be produced and detected at present and future colliders? The answer is negative in the most popular see-saw scenarios for the simple reason that they are too heavy in these models. However, a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) particle content, including mirror fermions, two $SU(2)_L$ triplet and one singlet Higgs fields, leads to a scenario in which the see-saw mechanism is realized with the Majorana mass $M_R$ of the right-handed neutrino being of the order of the electroweak scale or smal…
We determine the gauge invariance classes of tree level Feynman diagrams in spontaneously broken gauge theories, providing a proof for the formalism of gauge and flavor flips. We find new gauge invariance classes in theories with a nonlinearly realized scalar sector. In unitarity gauge, the same gauge invariance classes correspond to a decomposition of the scattering amplitude into pieces that satisfy the relevant Ward Identities individually. In theories with a linear realized scalar sector in R_ξgauge, no additional nontrivial gauge invariance classes exist compared to the unbroken case.
The formulation of a grand unified field theory based on the nonlinearly realized SU(5) gauge group is presented. The tree-level action is constructed by requiring invariance under local left SU(5) gauge transformations, the existence of a weak power-counting bound and by imposing also an additional invariance under local right SU_C(3) X U_Q(1) transformations. The local functional equation associated to this latter invariance allows one to prove the absence of physical scalar modes with the quantum numbers of massless gauge bosons from the perturbative spectrum. Two independent mass invariant…
We study the bulk mass effects on the electroweak phase transition at finite temperature in a five dimensional SU(3) gauge-Higgs unification model on an orbifold. We investigate whether the Higgs mass satisfying the experimental lower bound can be compatible with the strong first order phase transition necessary for a successful electroweak baryogenesis. Our numerical results show that the above statement can be realized by matter with bulk mass yielding a viable Higgs mass. We also find an interesting case where the heavier Higgs gives the stronger first order phase transition.
Little Higgs theories, in which the Higgs particle is realized as the pseudo-Goldstone boson of an approximate global chiral symmetry have generated much interest as possible alternatives to weak scale supersymmetry. In this paper we analyze precision electroweak observables in the Minimal Moose model and find that in order to be consistent with current experimental bounds, the gauge structure of this theory needs to be modified. We then look for viable regions of parameter space in the modified theory by calculating the various contributions to the S and T parameters.
We study the effect of BSM particles receiving most of their mass from their coupling to the Higgs boson ("Loryons") on the electroweak phase transition. The existence of BSM Loryons would imply that electroweak symmetry must be non-linearly realized in the effective theory of the Standard Model. Since, by definition, Loryons have a significant coupling to the Higgs, they are expected to have a significant effect on the Higgs effective potential and thereby the electroweak phase transition. We show that the BSM Loryon parameter space viable under current experimental and theoretical constraint…
We study electroweak symmetry breaking in minimal composite Higgs models $SU(4)/Sp(4)$ with purely fermionic UV completions based on a confining Hypercolor gauge group and find that the extra Higgs potential from the underlying preon mass can destruct the correlation between the mass of Higgs and composite partners. Thus the composite partners can be very heavy for successful electroweak symmetry breaking without enhancing the separation between the new physical scale and Higgs VEV. So this kind of model can be easily realized by ordinary strong dynamics theories without artificial assumptions…
We study the baryon asymmetry of the universe in the supersymmetric standard model (SSM). At the electroweak phase transition, the fermionic partners of the charged SU(2) gauge bosons and Higgs bosons are reflected from or transmitted to the bubble wallof the broken phase. Owing to a physical complex phase in their mass matrix, these reflections and transmissions have asymmetries between CP conjugate processes. Equilibrium conditions in the symmetric phaseare then shifted to favor a non-vanishing value for the baryon number density, which is realized through electroweak anomaly. We show that t…
We study Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We employ the 2-loop Renormalization Group equations for running masses and couplings taking into account sparticle threshold effects. The decoupling of each particle below its threshold is realized by a step function in all one-loop Renormalization Group equations (RGE). This program requires the calculation of all wavefunction, vertex and mass renormalizations for all particles involved. Adapting our numerical routines to take care of the succesive decoupling of each particle below its thres…
We present a description of calculations of the electroweak amplitude for e+ e- --> f fbar process. The calculations are done within the OMS (on-mass-shell) renormalization scheme in two gauges: in Rxi, which allows an explicit control of gauge invariance by examining cancellation of gauge parameters and search for gauge-invariant subsets of diagrams, and in the unitary gauge as a cross-check. The formulae we derived are realized in a FORTRAN code eeffLib, which is being created within the framework of the project CalcPHEP. We present a comprehensive comparison between eeffLib results for the …
We examine the Higgs mass parameters and electroweak symmetry breaking in supersymmetric orbifold field theories in which the 4-dimensional Higgs fields originate from higher-dimensional gauge supermultiplets. It is noted that such gauge-Higgs unification leads to a specific boundary condition on the Higgs mass parameters at the compactification scale, which is independent of the details of supersymmetry breaking mechanism. With this boundary condition, phenomenologically viable parameter space of the model is severely constrained by the condition of electroweak symmetry breaking for supersymm…
We propose a new electroweak baryogenesis scenario in high-scale supersymmetric (SUSY) models. We consider a singlet extension of the minimal SUSY standard model introducing additional vector-like multiplets. We show that the strongly first-order phase transition can occur at a high temperature comparable to the soft SUSY breaking scale. In addition, the proper amount of the baryon asymmetry of the universe can be generated via the lepton number violating process in the vector-like multiplet sector. The typical scale of our scenario, the soft SUSY breaking scale, can be any value. Thus our new…

We compute the Coleman Weinberg effective potential for the Higgs field in RS Gauge-Higgs unification scenarios based on a bulk SO(5) x U(1)_X gauge symmetry, with gauge and fermion fields propagating in the bulk and a custodial symmetry protecting the generation of large corrections to the T parameter and the coupling of the Z to the bottom quark. We demonstrate that electroweak symmetry breaking may be realized, with proper generation of the top and bottom quark masses for the same region of bulk mass parameters that lead to good agreement with precision electroweak data in the presence of a…
A complete analysis of the electroweak precision observables is performed within a recently proposed minimal composite Higgs model, realized as a 5-dimensional warped compactification. In particular, we compute Z->bb and the one-loop correction to the rho parameter. We find that oblique data can be easily reproduced without a significant amount of tuning in the parameters of the model, while Z->bb imposes a stronger constraint. As a consequence of the latter, some of the new fermionic resonances must have mass around 4 TeV, which corresponds to an electroweak fine tuning of a few percent. Othe…
In this review, we discuss methods of parsing direct and indirect information from collider experiments regarding the Higgs boson and describe simple ways in which experimental likelihoods can be consistently reconstructed and interfaced with model predictions in pertinent parameter spaces. Ultimately these methods are used to constrain a five-dimensional parameter space describing a model-independent framework for electroweak symmetry breaking. We review prevalent scenarios for extending the electroweak symmetry breaking sector relative to the Standard Model and emphasize their predictions fo…
We argue that the gauge symmetry which includes SU(3)_L as a higher weak-isospin symmetry is manifestly given by SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X\otimes U(1)_N, where the last two factors determine the electric charge and B-L, respectively. This theory not only provides a consistent unification of the electroweak and B-L interactions, but also gives insights in dark matter, neutrino masses, and inflation. The dark matter belongs to a class of new particles that have wrong B-L numbers, and is stabilized due to a newly-realized W-parity as residual gauge symmetry. The B-L breaking field is i…
The BESS model is the Higgs-less alternative to the standard model of electroweak interaction, based on nonlinearly realized spontaneous symmetry breaking. Since it is nonrenormalizable, new couplings (not existing in the SM) are induced at each loop order. On the basis of the one loop induced vector-boson self-couplings we study the two- and three-vector-boson-production processes in $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=500 GeV$, the expected energy of the next $ e^+e^-$ linear collider (NLC). Assuming that NLC results will agree with the SM predictions within given accuracy we identify the bound…
Quantum weakdynamics (QWD) as an SU(3)_I gauge theory with the Theta vacuum term is considered to be the unification of the electroweak interaction as an SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge theory. The grand unification of SU(3)_I x SU(3)_C beyond the standard model SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y is established by the group SU(3)_I. The grand unified interactions break down to weak and strong interactions at a new grand unification scale 10^{3} GeV, through dynamical spontaneous symmetry breaking (DSSB); the weak and strong coupling constants are the same, alpha_i = alpha_s ~ 0.12, at this scale. DSSB is reali…
Current limit on the dark matter relic abundance may suggest that $|μ|$ should be smaller than prediction in the minimal supergravity scenario (mSUGRA) for moderate $m_0$ and $m_{1/2}$. The electroweak-ino parameter $M_1, M_2$ and $|μ|$ are then much closer to each other. This can be realized naturally in the non-universal Higgs mass model (NUHM). Since the heaviest neutralino ($\tildeχ^0_4$) and chargino ($\tildeχ^\pm_2$) have significant gaugino components, they may appear frequently in the left-handed squark decay and then be detectable at the LHC. In such a case, we showed that the hierarc…
We point out a set of operator identities that relate the operators corresponding to the oblique corrections to operators that modify fermion couplings to the gauge bosons as well as operators that modify triple gauge boson couplings. Such identities are simple consequences of the equations of motion. Therefore the contributions from new physics to the oblique parameters can be disguised as modifications of triple gauge boson couplings provided the fermion couplings to the gauge bosons are suitably modified by higher dimensional operators. Since the experimental constraints on triple gauge bos…
The Very Special Relativity Electroweak Standard Model (VSR EW SM) is a theory with $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_R$ symmetry, with the same number of leptons and gauge fields as in the usual Weinberg-Salam (WS) model. No new particles are introduced. The model is renormalizable and unitarity is preserved. However, photons obtain mass and the massive bosons obtain different masses for different polarizations. Besides, neutrino masses are generated. A VSR invariant term will produce neutrino oscillations and new processes are allowed. In particular, we compute the rate of the decays $μ\rightarrow e + γ$…
We propose an electroweakly interacting spin-1 dark matter (DM) model. The electroweak gauge symmetry, SU(2)$_L\times$U(1)$_Y$, is extended into SU(2)$_0\times$SU(2)$_1 \times $SU(2)$_2 \times$U(1)$_Y$. A discrete symmetry exchanging SU(2)$_0$ and SU(2)$_2$ is imposed. This discrete symmetry stabilizes the DM candidate. The spin-1 DM particle ($V^0)$ and its SU(2)$_L$ partners ($V^\pm$) interact with the Standard Model (SM) electroweak gauge bosons without any suppression factors. Consequently, pairs of DM particles efficiently annihilate into the SM particles in the early universe, and the me…
We extend the standard model to a scalar-assisted vector-like fermion model to realize electroweak baryogenesis. The extended Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, due to the mixing among the vector-like quark and the standard model quarks, provides additional sources of the CP violation. Together with the enhancement from large vector-like quark mass, a large enough baryon-to-photon ratio could be obtained. The strongly first-order phase transition could be realized via the potential barrier which separate the broken minimum and the symmetric minimum in the scalar potential. We investigate in det…
I build a SU(2)left x U(1) electroweak gauge theory of J=0 mesons, which transform like sets of fermion-antifermion composite fields. SU(2)left x U(1) is embedded in a natural way, compatible with the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model for quarks, into the chiral group U(N)left x U(N)right, N being the (even) number of ``flavours''. The Lagrangian exhibits a chiral SU(2)left x SU(2)right symmetry at the limit when the hypercharge coupling g' goes to zero. It is spontaneously broken down to its diagonal SU(2)v subgroup; as the latter includes the U(1) group of electromagnetism, this provides an expla…
The origin of the GUT scale from the top down perspective is explored. The GUT gauge symmetry is broken by the renormalization group effects, which is an extension of the radiative electroweak symmetry breaking scenario to the GUT models. That is, in the same way as the origin of the electroweak scale, the GUT scale is generated from the Planck scale through the radiative corrections to the soft SUSY breaking mass parameters. This mechanism is applied to a perturbative SO(10) GUT model, recently proposed by us. In the SO(10) model, the relation between the GUT scale and the Planck scale can na…
Physics beyond the Standard Model, realized above the electroweak scale, can be incorporated in a model independent way in the Wilson coefficients of higher dimensional gauge invariant operators. In these proceedings we review the matching of the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariant dimension-six operators on the effective Hamiltonian governing $b\to s$ and $b\to c$ transitions, including the leading 1-loop effects.
We discuss how unification of the gauge, Higgs and (three chiral family) matter superfields can be realized from the compactification of a six dimensional supersymmetric SU(8) gauge theory over the orbifold R^4 x T^2/Z_3. The bulk gauge interaction includes Yukawa interactions to generate masses for quarks and leptons after the electroweak symmetry is broken. The Yukawa matrices in this case turn out to be antisymmetric, and thus not phenomenologically viable. To overcome this we introduce brane fields which are vector-like under the standard model gauge symmetry, and so do not alter the numbe…
In a model independent framework, the effects of new physics at the electroweak scale can be parametrized in terms of an effective Lagrangian expansion. Assuming the $SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry is linearly realized, the expansion at the lowest order span dimension--six operators built from the observed Standard model (SM) particles, in addition to a light scalar doublet. After a proper choice of the operator basis we present a global fit to all the updated available data related to the electroweak symmetry breaking sector: triple gauge boson vertex (TGV) collider measurements, electrowea…
The W Mass determination at the Tevatron CDF experiment reported a deviation from the SM expectation at 7$σ$ level. We discuss a few possible interpretations and their collider implications. We perform electroweak global fits under various frameworks and assumptions. We consider three types of electroweak global fits in the effective-field-theory framework: the $S$-$T$, the $S$-$T$-$δG_F$, and the eight-parameter flavor-universal one. We discuss the amounts of tensions between different $m_W$ measurements reflected in these fits and the corresponding shifts in central values of these parameter…
New physics realized above the electroweak scale can be encoded in a model independent way in the Wilson coefficients of higher dimensional operators which are invariant under the Standard Model gauge group. In this article, we study the matching of the $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariant dim-6 operators on the standard $B$ physics Hamiltonian relevant for $b \to s$ and $b\to c$ transitions. The matching is performed at the electroweak scale (after spontaneous symmetry breaking) by integrating out the top quark, $W$, $Z$ and the Higgs particle. We first carry out the matchin…
