Magnetic ordering phenomena in CexPr1-xB6 solid solutions have been studied using both powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. A variety of magnetic structures are observed depending on temperature and Ce concentration. Over a broad composition range (x $\le$ 0.7), Pr-Pr interactions play a dominant role, giving rise to incommensurate structures with wave vectors of the form k{IC1}=(1/4-delta, 1/4, 1/2) or k{IC2}=(1/4-delta, 1/4-delta, 1/2). The crossover to a CeB6-like regime takes place near x = 0.7-0.8. For the latter composition, the antiferroquadrupolar phase transition observed in transport measurements precedes the onset, at lower temperature, of a commensurate magnetic order similar to that existing in CeB6. However, unlike in the pure compound, an incommensurate magnetic order is formed at even higher temperature and persists in the antiferroquadrupolar phase down to the lock-in transition. These results are shown to reflect the interplay between various type of dipole exchange and higher multipole interactions in this series of compounds.
We propose many-body order parameters for bulk multipoles in crystalline systems, which originate from the non-trivial topology of the nested Wilson loop spectrum. The many-body order parameters are designed to measure multipolar charge distribution in a crystalline unit cell, and they match the localized corner charge originating from the multipoles. We provide analytic arguments and numerical proof for the order parameters. Furthermore, we show that the many-body order parameters faithfully measure the physical multipole moments even when the symmetries quantizing multipoles are lost and thu…
We present a general formalism of multipole descriptions under the space-time inversion group. We elucidate that two types of atomic toroidal multipoles, i.e., electric and magnetic, are fundamental pieces to express electronic order parameters in addition to ordinary electric and magnetic multipoles. By deriving quantum-mechanical operators for both toroidal multipoles, we show that electric (magnetic) toroidal multipole higher than dipole (monopole) can become a primary order parameter in a hybridized-orbital system. We also demonstrate emergent cross-correlated couplings between electric, m…
Cerium electronic multipoles in trigonal symmetry viewed in magnetic neutron diffraction are investigated. Analytic expressions for all the magnetic multipoles, and radial integrals calculated with an established atomic code, are used to scrutinize a recent claim to have observed an octupole-ice configuration in a powder sample of pyrochlore Ce2Sn2O7. Three equally plausible suites of multipoles belonging to uncorrelated cerium ions give equally satisfactory accounts of the available diffraction pattern. Our multipoles are suitable for future experiments using Bragg diffraction from a compound…
A theoretical investigation of a plausible construct for electronic structure in iridate perovskites demonstrates the existence of magnetic multipoles hitherto not identified. The strange multipoles, which are parity-even, time-odd and even rank tensors, are absent from the so-called jeff = 1/2 model. We prove that the strange multipoles contribute to magnetic neutron diffraction, and we estimate their contribution to intensities of Bragg spots for Sr2IrO4. The construct encompasses the jeff = 1/2 model, and it is consistent with the known magnetic structure, ordered magnetic moment, and publi…
We investigate a possibility of odd-parity multipole orderings in a locally noncentrosymmetric tetragonal compound CeCoSi. By performing symmetrical and microscopic mean-field analyses on a two-orbital tight-binding model, we propose potential odd-parity multipoles hidden in staggered antiferromagnetic and antiferroquadrupole orderings in CeCoSi. We show that $3z^2-r^2$ type of the magnetic quadrupole is induced by the staggered magnetic dipole ordering for a large crystal-field splitting between two orbitals, while $xy$ type of the electric toroidal quadrupole is emergent by the staggered ele…
We report our theoretical study on nucleation of a magnetic vortex around a nonmagnetic impurity doped into ferromagnets. The mechanism lies in the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction arising from the breaking of spatial inversion symmetry by the impurity. By using the spin-wave analysis and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the asymmetric interaction induces a magnetic vortex with nonzero vorticity $l=+1$. The vortex is stabilized even for less frustration in exchange interactions and in the absence of an external magnetic field. We also find that the magnetic vortex is character…
Mutual interplay between the electronic degrees of freedom in solids, such as charge, spin, orbital, sublattice, and bond degrees of freedom, is a source of cross-correlated phenomena with unconventional electronic ordered states. Such degrees of freedom can be described by four types of multipoles (electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal) in a unified way, which enable us to tightly connect the microscopic degrees of freedom with macroscopic physical responses in a transparent manner. We complete a classification of the multipoles in all 122 magnetic point groups based on…
An ancient Hamiltonian of electrons with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom is re-examined as a model of magneto-electric multipoles. In the model, a magnetic charge and simple quantum rotator are tightly locked in action, some might say they are enslaved entities. It is shown that magneto-electric multipoles almost perfectly accord with those inferred from an analysis of magnetic neutron diffraction data on a ceramic superconductor (YBCO) in the pseudo-gap phase. Nigh on perfection between Stone's model and inferred magneto-electric multipoles is achieved by addition to the origina…
We present a systematic method to automatically generate symmetry-adapted magnetic structures for given crystal structure and general propagation vector k as an efficient approach of the analysis of complex modulated magnetic structures. The method is developed as an extension of the generation scheme based on multipole expansion, which was demonstrated only for the propagation vector k=0 [M.-T. Suzuki et al., Phys. Rev. B 99, 174407 (2019)]. The symmetry-adapted magnetic structures characterized with an ordering vector k are obtained by mapping the multipole magnetic alignments on a virtual c…
The microscopic conditions for the emergence of nonreciprocal magnon excitations in noncentrosymmetric magnets are theoretically investigated. We show that asymmetric magnon excitations appear when a bond magnetic toroidal dipole becomes active, which is defined as a parallel component between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector and the averaged spin moments at the ends of the bonds. Depending on magnetic structures accompanying the bond magnetic toroidal dipoles, the higher-rank magnetic toroidal multipoles can also be activated in a magnetic cluster, which describes various angle dependences of…
We propose an efficient microscopic design procedure of electronic band structures having intrinsic spin and momentum dependences in spin-orbit-coupling free antiferromagnets. Our bottom-up design approach to creating desired spin-split and reshaped band structures could result in further findings of practical spin-orbit-coupling free materials exhibiting a giant spin-dependent and/or nonreciprocal transport, magneto-electric and elastic responses as a consequence of such band structures. We establish a systematic guideline to construct symmetric/antisymmetric spin-split and antisymmetrically …
Ordered magnetic charge created by Dirac multipoles that are magnetic and polar is examined. It has previously been revealed in the pseudo-gap phase of high-Tc materials by use of the Kerr effect and magnetic neutron Bragg diffraction. There are several forms of the polar operator for magnetic neutron scattering built from spin and electric dipole operators of unpaired electrons. Construction of Dirac quadrupoles that emerge from centrosymmetric sites used by Cu ions in the ceramic superconductor Hg1201 is illustrated, together with selection rules for excitations that will feature in neutron …
We submit that the magnetic space-group Cac (#9.41) is consistent with the established magnetic structure of BaFe2Se3, with magnetic dipole moments in a motif that uses two ladders [Caron J M et al 2011 Phys. Rev. B 84 180409(R)]. The corresponding crystal class m1' allows axial and polar dipoles and forbids bulk ferromagnetism. The compound supports magneto-electric multipoles, including a magnetic charge (monopole) and an anapole (magnetic toroidal dipole) visible in the Bragg diffraction of x-rays and neutrons. Our comprehensive simulation of neutron Bragg diffraction by BaFe2Se3 exploits e…
Compulsory Dirac multipoles in the bilayer perovskite Ca3Ru2O7 are absent in published analyses of experimental data. In a first step at correcting knowledge of the magnetic structure, we have analysed existing Bragg diffraction patterns gathered on samples held well below the Néel temperature at which A-type antiferromagnetic order of axial dipoles spontaneously develops. Patterns were gathered with neutrons, and linearly polarized x-rays tuned in energy to a ruthenium atomic resonance. Neutron diffraction data contains solid evidence of Dirac dipoles (anapoles or toroidal moments). No such c…
A systematic description of multipole degrees of freedom is discussed on the basis of the Stevens' operator-equivalent technique. The generalized Stevens' multiplicative factors are derived for all of the electric and the magnetic multipoles relevant to f-electron systems. With extensive use of the Stevens' factors, we express the spatial dependences of the electric and the magnetic fields, and the electric and the magnetic charge densities of localized f electrons. The latter is utilized to draw wave functions including their magnetic profile in addition to their shape with the charge density…
In heavy fermion systems, multipole degrees of freedom make possible the emergence of rich phenomena, such as hidden orders and superconductivities. However, many of them remain unsolved since the origin of higher-rank multipole interaction is not well understood. Among these issues, we focus on the quadrupole order in CeB$_6$, which is a famous multipolar heavy fermion system actively studied for decades. We analyze the multiorbital periodic Anderson model for CeB$_6$, and find that both magnetic, quadrupole, and octupole fluctuations develop cooperatively due to the strong inter-multipole co…
Resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction at the Dy M$_{4,5}$ edges has been used to study Dy multipoles in the combined magnetic and orbitally ordered phase of DyB$_2$C$_2$. The analysis incorporates both the intra-atomic magnetic and quadrupolar interactions between the 3d core and 4f valence shells. Additionally, we introduce to the formalism the interference of magnetic and nonmagnetic oscillators. This allows a determination of the higher order multipole moments of rank 1 (dipole) to 6 (hexacontatetrapole). The strength of the Dy 4f multipole moments have been estimated at being between 7 and…
A whole series of expressions for four species of multipoles (electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal) is provided as a complete basis set to describe arbitrary single-centered spinful electron systems. A compact formula to calculate matrix elements of these multipoles is also derived. A visualization method of an electronic state characterized in terms of multipoles is proposed. The complete basis set is useful to narrow down a candidate order parameter of electron systems in phase transition, to describe a property of cross-correlated phenomena, to analyze spectra of x-r…
We investigate effects of multipole moments in f-electron systems both from phenomenological and microscopic viewpoints. First, we discuss significant effects of octupole moment on the magnetic susceptibility in a paramagnetic phase. It is found that even within mean-field approximation, the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the Curie-Weiss law due to interactions between dipole and octupole moments. Next, we proceed to a microscopic theory for multipole ordering on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. After brief explanation of a method to derive multipole interactions from the $f$-electro…
Hexagonal YMnO$_{3}$ is a prototype antiferromagnet which exhibits multiferroic behavior with the ferroelectric and magnetic transitions occurring at different temperatures. We observe an out-of-plane canting of the Mn$^{3+}$ magnetic moments using resonant X-ray diffraction (RXD) in a single crystal of this material. These canted moments result in the symmetry-forbidden (0,0,1) magnetic Bragg reflection, which is observed at the Mn $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. We also observe an unexpected difference in the RXD spectral shapes at different temperatures. Using ab initio calculations, we explore…
Structural and magnetic transitions in a double perovskite hosting 5d1 Re ions are discussed on the basis of recently published high-resolution x-ray diffraction patterns [D. Hirai, et al., Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 022063(R) (2020)]. A reported structural transition below room temperature, from cubic to tetragonal symmetry, appears not to be driven by T2g-type quadrupoles, as suggested. A magnetic motif at lower temperature is shown to be composed of two order parameters, associated with propagation vectors k = (0, 0, 1) and k = (0, 0, 0). Findings from our studies, for structural and magnetic prope…
A broken symmetry ground state without any magnetic moments has been calculated by means of local-density-approximation to density functional theory plus a local exchange term, the so-called LDA+$U$ approach, for URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. The solution is analysed in terms of a multipole tensor expansion of the itinerant density matrix and is found to be a non-trivial magnetic multipole. Analysis and further calculations show that this type of multipole enters naturally in time reversal breaking in presence of large effective spin-orbit coupling and co-exists with magnetic moments for most magnetic ac…
We study the charge and spin density distributions of excitonic insulator (EI) states in the tight-binding approximation. We first discuss the charge and spin densities of the EI states when the valence and conduction bands are composed of orthogonal orbitals in a single atom. We show that the anisotropic charge or spin density distribution occurs in a unit cell (or atom) and a higher rank electric or magnetic multipole moment becomes finite, indicating that the EI state corresponds to the multipole order. A full description of the multipole moments for the $s$, $p$, and $d$ orbitals is then g…
Four types of atomic-scale multipoles, electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal multipoles, give a complete set to describe arbitrary degrees of freedom for coupled charge, spin, and orbital of electrons. We here present a systematic classification of these multipole degrees of freedom towards the application in condensed matter physics. Starting from the multipole description under the rotation group in real space, we generalize the concept of multipoles in momentum space with the spin degree of freedom. We show how multipoles affect the electronic band structures and line…
In order to clarify exotic multipole properties of filled skutterudites, we evaluate multipole susceptibility for $n$=1$\sim$5, where $n$ is the local $f$-electron number, on the basis of a multiorbital Anderson model constructed using the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. For $n$=1, magnetic fluctuations dominate over low-temperature electronic properties, while for $n$=2 and 4, electronic states are dominated by both magnetic and quadrupole fluctuations. For $n$=3 and 5, octupole fluctuations are found to be significant, depending on the crystalline electric field potential. We discuss possible relev…
We discuss low-temperature multipole states of Nd-based filled skutterudites by analyzing a multiorbital Anderson model with the use of a numerical renormalization group method. In order to determine the multipole state, we take a procedure to maximize the multipole susceptibility matrix. Then, it is found that the dominant multipole state is characterized by the mixture of 4u magnetic and 5u octupole moments. The secondary state is specified by 2u octupole. When we further take into account the coupling between $f$ electrons in degenerate $Γ_{67}^{-}$ ($e_{\rm u}$) orbitals and dynamical Jahn…
A general reformulation of the exchange energy of $5f$-shell is applied in the analysis of the magnetic structure of various actinides compounds in the framework of LDA+U method. The calculations are performed in an efficient scheme with essentially only one free parameter, the screening length. The results are analysed in terms of different polarisation channels, due to different multipoles. Generally it is found that the spin-orbital polarisation is dominating. This can be viewed as a strong enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling in these systems. This leads to a drastic decrease in spin pol…
The optical Hall response is theoretically studied for spin-orbit coupled metals with ferroic orders of cluster-type magnetic multipoles. We find that different magnetic multipoles give rise to distinct spectra in the optical Hall conductivity. In the cases of monopole and quadrupole orders, the optical Hall response appears predominantly in high- and low-energy regions, which correspond to the energy scales of electron correlation and kinetic energy, respectively, while the response is dispersed and rather weak in the case of toroidal order. By decomposing the spectra into different interband…
A minimal model for multipole orders in CeB$_6$ shows that degeneracy of the quadrupole order parameters and strong spin-orbit coupling lead to peculiar temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the X-ray reflection intensity at superlattice Bragg points. Furthermore, the intensity depends sensitively on the surface direction. These theoretical results explain naturally recent X-ray experiments in phases II and III of CeB$_6$. It is predicted that under weak magnetic field perpendicular to the (111) surface, the reflection intensity should change non-monotonically as a function of temperat…
Soft resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction (SRXD) at the Ho M$_{4,5}$ edges has been used to study Ho $4f$ multipoles in the combined magnetic and orbitally ordered phase of HoB$_2$C$_2$. A full description of the energy dependence for both $σ$ and $π$ incident x-rays at two different azimuthal angles, as well as the ratio $I_σ/I_π$ as a function of azimuthal angle for a selection of energies, allows a determination of the higher order multipole moments of rank 1 (dipole) to 6 (hexacontatetrapole). The Ho 4f multipole moments have been estimated, indicating a dominant hexadecapole (rank 4) order wi…
In vortex-like spin arrangements, multiple spins can combine into emergent multipole moments. Such multipole moments have broken space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, and can therefore exhibit linear magnetoelectric (ME) activity. Three types of such multipole moments are known: toroidal, monopole, and quadrupole moments. So far, however, the ME-activity of these multipole moments has only been established experimentally for the toroidal moment. Here, we propose a magnetic square cupola cluster, in which four corner-sharing square-coordinated metal-ligand fragments form a noncoplanar b…
We report our combined experimental and theoretical study of magnetoelectric properties of an antiferromagnet Sr(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$, in comparison with the isostructurals Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ and Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. The family of compounds commonly possesses a low-symmetric magnetic unit called the square cupola, which is a source of magnetoelectric responses associated with the magnetic multipoles activated under simultaneous breaking of spatial inversion and time reversal symmetries. Measuring the full magnetization curves and the magnetic-field profiles of dielectric constan…
We theoretically study NQR and NMR spectra in the presence of odd-parity multipoles originating from staggered antiferromagnetic and antiferroquadrupole orderings. For the $f$-electron metal, CeCoSi, which is a candidate hosting odd-parity multipoles, we derive an effective hyperfine field acting on Co nucleus generated from electronic origin multipole moments at Ce ion under zero and nonzero magnetic fields. We elucidate that emergent odd-parity multipoles give rise to sublattice-dependent spectral splittings in NQR and NMR through the effective hyperfine coupling in the absence of the global…
Fundamental block and staggered orders of magnetic Fe multipoles in Na2FeSe2 are classified by their symmetry and magnetoelectric properties. Our structure model incorporates ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic coupling between chains. The ferrate salt is valued in studies of highly correlated electrons as the only iron selenide known to possess chain-like structural units hosting ferrous cations. Axial and polar (Dirac) multipoles are compulsory in the electronic structure since Fe ions exhibit enantiomorphic symmetry in the parent K2ZnO2-type compound. Calculated Bragg diffraction patterns fo…
Spin-orbit coupling of as large as a half eV for electrons in 5$d$ orbitals often gives rise to the formation of spin-orbital entangled objects, characterized by the effective total angular momentum $J_{eff}$. Of particular interest are the $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 states realized in 5$d^{1}$ transition metal ions surrounded by an anion octahedron. The pure $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 quartet does not have any magnetic dipolar moment (<$M$> = 0) but hosts hidden pseudo-dipolar moments accompanied by charge quadrupoles and magnetic octupoles. Cs$_2$TaCl$_6$ and Rb$_2$TaCl$_6$ are correlated insulators with 5$d^{1}$…
We propose a realization of an antisymmetric spin-split band structure through magnetic phase transitions without spin-orbit coupling. It enables us to utilize for a variety of magnetic-order-driven cross-correlated and nonreciprocal transport phenomena as similar to those in the spin-orbit-coupling oriented systems. We unveil its general condition as an emergence of a bond-type magnetic toroidal multipole (polar tensor) in the triangular unit with the noncollinear 120$^{\circ}$-AFM structures. By using the concept of augmented multipoles, we systematically analyze the phenomena in terms of an…
In contrast to elementary Majorana particles, emergent Majorana fermions (MFs) in condensed-matter systems may have electromagnetic multipoles. We developed a general theory of magnetic multipoles for surface helical MFs on time-reversal-invariant superconductors. The results show that the multipole response is governed by crystal symmetry, and that a one-to-one correspondence exists between the symmetry of Cooper pairs and the representation of magnetic multipoles under crystal symmetry. The latter property provides a way to identify nonconventional pairing symmetry via the magnetic response …
The sesquioxide, Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$, has been a material of intense interest in recent years due to reports of an anomalous giant magnetodielectric effect and emergent mixed crystal field-phonon (vibronic) excitations below a putative antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 6.2 K. The claim of long-range magnetic order in this material is based on heat capacity and temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements; however, multiple neutron diffraction studies have been unable to distinguish any magnetic Bragg peaks. In this article, we present the results of a comprehensive investigation of th…
The currently accepted magnetic ground state of Sr2IrO4 (the -++- state) preserves inversion symmetry. This is at odds, though, with recent experiments that indicate a magnetoelectric ground state, leading to the speculation that orbital currents or more exotic magnetic multipoles might exist in this material. Here, we analyze various magnetic configurations and demonstrate that two of them, the magnetoelectric -+-+ state and the non-magnetoelectric ++++ state, can explain these recent second-harmonic generation (SHG) experiments, obviating the need to invoke orbital currents. The SHG-probed m…
The multipole concept, which characterizes the spacial distribution of scalar and vector objects by their angular dependence, has already become widely used in various areas of physics. In recent years it has become employed to systematically classify the anisotropic distribution of electrons and magnetization around atoms in solid state materials. This has been fuelled by the discovery of several physical phenomena that exhibit unusual higher rank multipole moments, beyond that of the conventional degrees of freedom as charge and magnetic dipole moment. Moreover, the higher rank electric/magn…

A theory of neutron scattering by magnetic materials is reviewed with emphasis on the use of electronic multipoles that have universal appeal, because they are amenable to calculation and appear in theories of many other experimental techniques. The conventional theory of magnetic neutron scattering, which dates back to Schwinger (1937) and Trammell (1953), yields an approximation for the scattering amplitude in terms of magnetic dipoles formed with the spin (S) and orbital angular momentum (L) of valence electrons. The so-called dipole-approximation has been widely adopted by researchers duri…
The classical bilinear-biquadratic nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice does not exhibit conventional Neel-type magnetic order at any temperature or magnetic field. Instead spin correlations decay algebraically over length scales r ~ \sqrt{T}, behavior characteristic of a Coulomb phase arising from a strong local constraint. Despite this, its thermodynamic properties remain largely unchanged if Neel order is restored by the addition of a degeneracy-lifting perturbation, e.g., further neighbor interactions. Here we show how these apparent contradictions can be r…
Multipole representation is proposed for the anisotropic Coulomb interactions in solids. Any local interactions can be expressed as the product of two multipole operators, and the interaction parameters are systematically classified based on the point group symmetry. The form of the multipole interactions are restricted not only by the symmetry and Hermiticity but also by the spatial structure of the interaction, which is closely related to the presence or absence of the odd-rank multipoles. As an exemplary demonstration, the screened Coulomb interaction for SrVO$_3$ is considered, where only …
The odd-parity multipole is an emergent degree of freedom, leading to spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking. The odd-parity multipole order may occur by forming staggered even-parity multipoles in a unit cell. We focus on a locally noncentrosymmetric bilayer Rashba system, and study an odd-parity electric octupole order caused by the antiferro stacking of local electric quadrupoles. Analyzing the forward scattering model, we show that the electric octupole order is stabilized by a layer-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The roles of the spin-orbit coupling are clarified on the basis of t…
Broken spatial inversion symmetry in spin-orbital coupled systems leads to a mixing between orbitals with different parity, which results in unusual electronic structures and transport properties. We theoretically investigate the possibility of multipole ordering induced by a parity mixing. In particular, we focus on the system in which the parity mixing appears in a sublattice-dependent form. Starting from the periodic Anderson model with such a local parity mixing, we derive an extended Kondo lattice model with sublattice-dependent antisymmetric exchange couplings between itinerant electrons…
In heavy fermion systems, higher-rank multipole operators are active thanks to the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), and the role of diverse multipole fluctuations on the pairing mechanism attracts a lot of attention. Here, we study a mechanism of superconductivity in heavy fermion systems, by focusing on the impact of vertex corrections (VCs) for the pairing interaction going beyond the Migdal approximation. In heavy fermion systems, strong interference between multipole fluctuations cause significant VCs, that represent many-body effects beyond mean-field-type approximations. Especially, …
Nonlinear optics, and particularly second harmonic generation (SHG), is increasingly used in many modern disciplines from material characterization in physical sciences to bio-imaging in medicine and optical signal processing in information technology. We present a theoretical analysis providing a strong estimate for the energy-integrated SHG response. Requirements of symmetry in time and space are fully respected in the calculation, and estimates of natural and magnetic circular dichroic signals are superior to previous ones. Like symmetry requirements are traced in the amplitude for magnetic…
