A systematic description of multipole degrees of freedom is discussed on the basis of the Stevens' operator-equivalent technique. The generalized Stevens' multiplicative factors are derived for all of the electric and the magnetic multipoles relevant to f-electron systems. With extensive use of the Stevens' factors, we express the spatial dependences of the electric and the magnetic fields, and the electric and the magnetic charge densities of localized f electrons. The latter is utilized to draw wave functions including their magnetic profile in addition to their shape with the charge density. The definite relation between the operators as quantum-mechanical variables in a multipole exchange model and the multipole moments in expansion of electromagnetic fields is given. The general treatments for the exchange model with the RPA susceptibility and the Ginzburg-Landau free-energy expansion are discussed, using CexLa1-xB6 as a typical example. The representative formula of the vector spherical harmonics are summarized, which are suitable basis for vector fields in the spherical expansion.
We present a general formalism of multipole descriptions under the space-time inversion group. We elucidate that two types of atomic toroidal multipoles, i.e., electric and magnetic, are fundamental pieces to express electronic order parameters in addition to ordinary electric and magnetic multipoles. By deriving quantum-mechanical operators for both toroidal multipoles, we show that electric (magnetic) toroidal multipole higher than dipole (monopole) can become a primary order parameter in a hybridized-orbital system. We also demonstrate emergent cross-correlated couplings between electric, m…
It is shown that $f$-electron multipole is naturally defined as spin-charge one-electron density operator in the second-quantized form with the use of tensor operator on the analogy of multipole expansion of electromagnetic potential from charge distribution in electromagnetism. Due to this definition of multipole, it is possible to determine multipole state from a microscopic viewpoint on the basis of the standard linear response theory for multipole susceptibility. In order to discuss multipole properties of filled skutterudites, we analyze a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model by employin…
We investigate effects of multipole moments in f-electron systems both from phenomenological and microscopic viewpoints. First, we discuss significant effects of octupole moment on the magnetic susceptibility in a paramagnetic phase. It is found that even within mean-field approximation, the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the Curie-Weiss law due to interactions between dipole and octupole moments. Next, we proceed to a microscopic theory for multipole ordering on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. After brief explanation of a method to derive multipole interactions from the $f$-electro…
A whole series of expressions for four species of multipoles (electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal) is provided as a complete basis set to describe arbitrary single-centered spinful electron systems. A compact formula to calculate matrix elements of these multipoles is also derived. A visualization method of an electronic state characterized in terms of multipoles is proposed. The complete basis set is useful to narrow down a candidate order parameter of electron systems in phase transition, to describe a property of cross-correlated phenomena, to analyze spectra of x-r…
In order to investigate multipole ordering in f-electron systems from a microscopic viewpoint, we study the so-called Γ_8 models on three kinds of lattices, simple cubic (sc), bcc, and fcc, based on a j-j coupling scheme with f-electron hopping integrals through (ffσ) bonding. From the Γ_8 model, we derive an effective model for each lattice structure by using the second-order perturbation theory with respect to (ffσ). By further applying mean-field theory to the effective model, we find a Γ_{3g} antiferro-quadrupole transition for the sc lattice, a Γ_{2u} antiferro-octupole transition for the…
Four types of atomic-scale multipoles, electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal multipoles, give a complete set to describe arbitrary degrees of freedom for coupled charge, spin, and orbital of electrons. We here present a systematic classification of these multipole degrees of freedom towards the application in condensed matter physics. Starting from the multipole description under the rotation group in real space, we generalize the concept of multipoles in momentum space with the spin degree of freedom. We show how multipoles affect the electronic band structures and line…
We propose an efficient microscopic design procedure of electronic band structures having intrinsic spin and momentum dependences in spin-orbit-coupling free antiferromagnets. Our bottom-up design approach to creating desired spin-split and reshaped band structures could result in further findings of practical spin-orbit-coupling free materials exhibiting a giant spin-dependent and/or nonreciprocal transport, magneto-electric and elastic responses as a consequence of such band structures. We establish a systematic guideline to construct symmetric/antisymmetric spin-split and antisymmetrically …
In order to clarify exotic multipole properties of filled skutterudites, we evaluate multipole susceptibility for $n$=1$\sim$5, where $n$ is the local $f$-electron number, on the basis of a multiorbital Anderson model constructed using the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. For $n$=1, magnetic fluctuations dominate over low-temperature electronic properties, while for $n$=2 and 4, electronic states are dominated by both magnetic and quadrupole fluctuations. For $n$=3 and 5, octupole fluctuations are found to be significant, depending on the crystalline electric field potential. We discuss possible relev…
We investigate microscopic aspects of multipole ordering in f-electron systems with emphasis on the effect of lattice structure. For the purpose, first we construct f-electron models on three kinds of lattices, simple cubic (sc), bcc, and fcc, by including f-electron hopping through (ffσ) bonding in a tight-binding approximation on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. Then, an effective model is derived in the strong-coupling limit for each lattice structure with the use of second-order perturbation theory with respect to (ffσ). By applying mean-field theory to such effective models, we find di…
In order to clarify possible multipole states of Sm-based filled skutterudite compounds, we investigate multipole susceptibility of a multiorbital Anderson model dynamically coupled with Jahn-Teller phonons by using a numerical renormalization group method. Here we take a procedure to maximize the multipole susceptibility matrix to determine the multipole state. When the electron-phonon coupling term is simply ignored, it is found that the dominant multipole state is characterized by 2u octupole for the $Γ_{67}^-$ quartet ground state, while the low-temperature phase is governed by magnetic fl…
Cerium electronic multipoles in trigonal symmetry viewed in magnetic neutron diffraction are investigated. Analytic expressions for all the magnetic multipoles, and radial integrals calculated with an established atomic code, are used to scrutinize a recent claim to have observed an octupole-ice configuration in a powder sample of pyrochlore Ce2Sn2O7. Three equally plausible suites of multipoles belonging to uncorrelated cerium ions give equally satisfactory accounts of the available diffraction pattern. Our multipoles are suitable for future experiments using Bragg diffraction from a compound…
Characteristics of hybridization and multipole orders of $4f$-electrons in Pr skutterudites are explained in terms of a pseudo-quartet composed of crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and the triplet. It is shown that the contrasting behaviors observed in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ and PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ are ascribed to the difference in triplet wave functions and the CEF splittings.Since a macroscopic degeneracy remains even in the ordered phase with the $Γ_3$-type antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) order,a model with strong AFQ fluctuation and static monopole/hexadecapole order is proposed for PrFe$_4$P$_{…
Mutual interplay between the electronic degrees of freedom in solids, such as charge, spin, orbital, sublattice, and bond degrees of freedom, is a source of cross-correlated phenomena with unconventional electronic ordered states. Such degrees of freedom can be described by four types of multipoles (electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal) in a unified way, which enable us to tightly connect the microscopic degrees of freedom with macroscopic physical responses in a transparent manner. We complete a classification of the multipoles in all 122 magnetic point groups based on…
An ancient Hamiltonian of electrons with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom is re-examined as a model of magneto-electric multipoles. In the model, a magnetic charge and simple quantum rotator are tightly locked in action, some might say they are enslaved entities. It is shown that magneto-electric multipoles almost perfectly accord with those inferred from an analysis of magnetic neutron diffraction data on a ceramic superconductor (YBCO) in the pseudo-gap phase. Nigh on perfection between Stone's model and inferred magneto-electric multipoles is achieved by addition to the origina…
By using a density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the ground-state properties of a one-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. For $B_4^0 \ne 0$, where $B_4^0$ is a parameter to control cubic crystalline electric field effect, one orbital is itinerant, while other two are localized. Due to the competition between itinerant and localized natures, we obtain orbital ordering pattern which is sensitive to $B_4^0$, leading to a characteristic change of $Γ_{3g}$ quadrupole state into an incommensurate structure. At $B_4^0 = 0$, all the thre…
Nonlinear optics, and particularly second harmonic generation (SHG), is increasingly used in many modern disciplines from material characterization in physical sciences to bio-imaging in medicine and optical signal processing in information technology. We present a theoretical analysis providing a strong estimate for the energy-integrated SHG response. Requirements of symmetry in time and space are fully respected in the calculation, and estimates of natural and magnetic circular dichroic signals are superior to previous ones. Like symmetry requirements are traced in the amplitude for magnetic…
A theoretical investigation of a plausible construct for electronic structure in iridate perovskites demonstrates the existence of magnetic multipoles hitherto not identified. The strange multipoles, which are parity-even, time-odd and even rank tensors, are absent from the so-called jeff = 1/2 model. We prove that the strange multipoles contribute to magnetic neutron diffraction, and we estimate their contribution to intensities of Bragg spots for Sr2IrO4. The construct encompasses the jeff = 1/2 model, and it is consistent with the known magnetic structure, ordered magnetic moment, and publi…
A theory of neutron scattering by magnetic materials is reviewed with emphasis on the use of electronic multipoles that have universal appeal, because they are amenable to calculation and appear in theories of many other experimental techniques. The conventional theory of magnetic neutron scattering, which dates back to Schwinger (1937) and Trammell (1953), yields an approximation for the scattering amplitude in terms of magnetic dipoles formed with the spin (S) and orbital angular momentum (L) of valence electrons. The so-called dipole-approximation has been widely adopted by researchers duri…
Theoretical account is given of 4f-electron dynamics and multipole orders in Pr skutterudites with particular attention to (i) mechanism of the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting leading to a pseudo-quartet ground state;(ii) Kondo effect due to exchange interactions involving the pseudo-quartet;(iii) multipole orders in the lattice of the pseudo-quartet in magnetic field.Competition between the point-charge interaction andhybridization between 4f and conduction electrons is identified as the key for controlling the CEF splitting. It is found that one of two pseudo-spins forming the pse…
It has recently been pointed out that Fermi surfaces can remain even in the superconductors under the symmetric spin-orbit interaction and broken time-reversal symmetry. Using the linear response theory, we study the instability of such systems toward ordering, which is an intrinsic property of the Fermi surfaces. The ordered states are classified into diagonal and offdiagonal ones, each of which respectively indicates the Pomeranchuk instability and Cooper pairing not of original electron but of Bogoliubov particles (bogolons). The corresponding order parameters are expanded by multipole mome…
Recent studies of unconventional superconductivity have focused on charge or spin fluctuation, instead of electron-phonon coupling, as an origin of attractive interaction between electrons. On the other hand, a multipole order, which represents electrons' degrees of freedom in strongly correlated and spin-orbit-coupled systems, has recently been attracting much attention. Stimulated by this background, we investigate multipole-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, which proposes a new pairing mechanism of unconventional superconductivity. Indeed, previous works have shown spin-triplet superc…
Spin-orbit coupling of as large as a half eV for electrons in 5$d$ orbitals often gives rise to the formation of spin-orbital entangled objects, characterized by the effective total angular momentum $J_{eff}$. Of particular interest are the $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 states realized in 5$d^{1}$ transition metal ions surrounded by an anion octahedron. The pure $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 quartet does not have any magnetic dipolar moment (<$M$> = 0) but hosts hidden pseudo-dipolar moments accompanied by charge quadrupoles and magnetic octupoles. Cs$_2$TaCl$_6$ and Rb$_2$TaCl$_6$ are correlated insulators with 5$d^{1}$…
Ordered magnetic charge created by Dirac multipoles that are magnetic and polar is examined. It has previously been revealed in the pseudo-gap phase of high-Tc materials by use of the Kerr effect and magnetic neutron Bragg diffraction. There are several forms of the polar operator for magnetic neutron scattering built from spin and electric dipole operators of unpaired electrons. Construction of Dirac quadrupoles that emerge from centrosymmetric sites used by Cu ions in the ceramic superconductor Hg1201 is illustrated, together with selection rules for excitations that will feature in neutron …
We study the charge and spin density distributions of excitonic insulator (EI) states in the tight-binding approximation. We first discuss the charge and spin densities of the EI states when the valence and conduction bands are composed of orthogonal orbitals in a single atom. We show that the anisotropic charge or spin density distribution occurs in a unit cell (or atom) and a higher rank electric or magnetic multipole moment becomes finite, indicating that the EI state corresponds to the multipole order. A full description of the multipole moments for the $s$, $p$, and $d$ orbitals is then g…
The quantum mechanical position operators, and their products, are not well-defined in systems obeying periodic boundary conditions. Here we extend the work of Resta who developed a formalism to calculate the electronic polarization as an expectation value of a many-body operator, to include higher multipole moments, e.g., quadrupole and octupole. We define $n$-th order multipole operators whose expectation values can be used to calculate the $n$-th multipole moment when all of the lower moments are vanishing (modulo a quantum). We show that changes in our operators are tied to flows of $n-1$-…
Structural and magnetic transitions in a double perovskite hosting 5d1 Re ions are discussed on the basis of recently published high-resolution x-ray diffraction patterns [D. Hirai, et al., Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 022063(R) (2020)]. A reported structural transition below room temperature, from cubic to tetragonal symmetry, appears not to be driven by T2g-type quadrupoles, as suggested. A magnetic motif at lower temperature is shown to be composed of two order parameters, associated with propagation vectors k = (0, 0, 1) and k = (0, 0, 0). Findings from our studies, for structural and magnetic prope…
We propose a realization of an antisymmetric spin-split band structure through magnetic phase transitions without spin-orbit coupling. It enables us to utilize for a variety of magnetic-order-driven cross-correlated and nonreciprocal transport phenomena as similar to those in the spin-orbit-coupling oriented systems. We unveil its general condition as an emergence of a bond-type magnetic toroidal multipole (polar tensor) in the triangular unit with the noncollinear 120$^{\circ}$-AFM structures. By using the concept of augmented multipoles, we systematically analyze the phenomena in terms of an…
We study resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) at Np M_{4,5} edges in the triple-\textbf{k} multipole ordering phase in NpO_{2}, on the basis of a localized electron model. We derive an expression for RXS amplitudes to characterize the spectra under the assumption that a rotational invariance is preserved in the intermediate state of scattering process. This assumption is justified by the fact that energies of the crystal electric field and the intersite interaction is smaller than the energy of multiplet structures. This expression is found useful to calculate energy profiles with taking account of…
Soft resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction (SRXD) at the Ho M$_{4,5}$ edges has been used to study Ho $4f$ multipoles in the combined magnetic and orbitally ordered phase of HoB$_2$C$_2$. A full description of the energy dependence for both $σ$ and $π$ incident x-rays at two different azimuthal angles, as well as the ratio $I_σ/I_π$ as a function of azimuthal angle for a selection of energies, allows a determination of the higher order multipole moments of rank 1 (dipole) to 6 (hexacontatetrapole). The Ho 4f multipole moments have been estimated, indicating a dominant hexadecapole (rank 4) order wi…
Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calcu…
The optical Hall response is theoretically studied for spin-orbit coupled metals with ferroic orders of cluster-type magnetic multipoles. We find that different magnetic multipoles give rise to distinct spectra in the optical Hall conductivity. In the cases of monopole and quadrupole orders, the optical Hall response appears predominantly in high- and low-energy regions, which correspond to the energy scales of electron correlation and kinetic energy, respectively, while the response is dispersed and rather weak in the case of toroidal order. By decomposing the spectra into different interband…
The multipole concept, which characterizes the spacial distribution of scalar and vector objects by their angular dependence, has already become widely used in various areas of physics. In recent years it has become employed to systematically classify the anisotropic distribution of electrons and magnetization around atoms in solid state materials. This has been fuelled by the discovery of several physical phenomena that exhibit unusual higher rank multipole moments, beyond that of the conventional degrees of freedom as charge and magnetic dipole moment. Moreover, the higher rank electric/magn…
In heavy fermion systems, higher-rank multipole operators are active thanks to the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), and the role of diverse multipole fluctuations on the pairing mechanism attracts a lot of attention. Here, we study a mechanism of superconductivity in heavy fermion systems, by focusing on the impact of vertex corrections (VCs) for the pairing interaction going beyond the Migdal approximation. In heavy fermion systems, strong interference between multipole fluctuations cause significant VCs, that represent many-body effects beyond mean-field-type approximations. Especially, …
An attractive proposal for the hidden order (HO) in the heavy electron compound URu2Si2 is an itinerant multipole order of high rank. It is due to the pairing of electrons and holes centered on zone center and boundary, respectively in states that have maximally different total angular momentum components. Due to the pairing with commensurate zone boundary ordering vector the translational symmetry is broken and a HO quasiparticle gap opens below the transition temperature T_HO. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has demonstrated that for T<T_HO the collective magnetic response is dominated by…
In contrast to elementary Majorana particles, emergent Majorana fermions (MFs) in condensed-matter systems may have electromagnetic multipoles. We developed a general theory of magnetic multipoles for surface helical MFs on time-reversal-invariant superconductors. The results show that the multipole response is governed by crystal symmetry, and that a one-to-one correspondence exists between the symmetry of Cooper pairs and the representation of magnetic multipoles under crystal symmetry. The latter property provides a way to identify nonconventional pairing symmetry via the magnetic response …
