We characterize Osserman and conformally Osserman Riemannian manifolds with the local structure of a warped product. By means of this approach we analyze the twisted product structure and obtain, as a consequence, that the only Osserman manifolds which can be written as a twisted product are those of constant curvature.
An algebraic curvature tensor is called Osserman if the eigenvalues of the associated Jacobi operator are constant on the unit sphere. A Riemannian manifold is called conformally Osserman if its Weyl conformal curvature tensor at every point is Osserman. We prove that a conformally Osserman manifold of dimension $n \ne 3, 4, 16$ is locally conformally equivalent either to a Euclidean space or to a rank-one symmetric space.
We characterize manifolds which are locally conformally equivalent to either complex projective space or to its negative curvature dual in terms of their Weyl curvature tensor. As a byproduct of this investigation, we classify the conformally complex space forms if the dimension is at least 8. We also study when the Jacobi operator associated to the Weyl conformal curvature tensor of a Riemannian manifold has constant eigenvalues on the bundle of unit tangent vectors and classify such manifolds which are not conformally flat in dimensions congruent to 2 mod 4.
A Riemannian manifold is called Osserman (conformally Osserman, respectively), if the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator of its curvature tensor (Weyl tensor, respectively) are constant on the unit tangent sphere at every point. Osserman Conjecture asserts that every Osserman manifold is either flat or rank-one symmetric. We prove that both the Osserman Conjecture and its conformal version, the Conformal Osserman Conjecture, are true, modulo a certain assumption on algebraic curvature tensors in $\mathbb{R}^16$. As a consequence, we show that a Riemannian manifold having the same Weyl tensor a…
We study the spectral geometry of the conformal Jacobi operator on a 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold (M,g). We show that (M,g) is conformally Osserman if and only if (M,g) is self-dual or anti self-dual. Equivalently, this means that the curvature tensor of (M,g) is given by a quaternionic structure, at least pointwise.
We investigate Kähler metrics conformal to gradient Ricci solitons, and base metrics of warped product gradient Ricci solitons. The latter we name quasi-solitons. A main assumption that is employed is functional dependence of the soliton potential, with the conformal factor in the first case, and with the warping function in the second. The main result in the first case is a partial classification in dimension $n\geq 4$. In the second case, Kähler quasi-soliton metrics satisfying the above main assumption are shown to be, under an additional genericity hypothesis, necessarily Riemannian produc…
Generalized Roter type manifold is a generalization of conformally flat manifold as well as Roter type manifold, which gives rise the form of the curvature tensor in terms of algebraic combinations of the fundamental metric tensor and Ricci tensors upto level 2. The object of the present paper is to investigate the characterizations of a warped product manifold to be generalized Roter-type. We also present an example of a warped product manifold which is generalized Roter type but not Roter type, and also an example of a warped product manifold which is Roter type but not conformally flat. The…
We show that locally conformally flat quasi-Einstein manifolds are globally conformally equivalent to a space form or locally isometric to a $pp$-wave or a warped product.
In this paper we prove that any complete locally conformally flat quasi-Einstein manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$-dimensional fibers of constant curvature. This result includes also the case of locally conformally flat gradient Ricci solitons.
We study pseudo-Riemannian Einstein manifolds which are conformally equivalent with a metric product of two pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Particularly interesting is the case where one of these manifolds is 1-dimensional and the case where the conformal factor depends on both manifolds simultaneously. If both factors are at least 3-dimensional then the latter case reduces to the product of two Einstein spaces, each of the special type admitting a non-trivial conformal gradient field. These are completely classified. If each factor is 2-dimensional, there is a special family of examples of non-c…
A Riemannian metric $\wht{g}$ with Ricci curvature $\wht{\ri}$ is called nontrivial quasi-Einstein, in the sense of Case, Shu and Wei, if it satisfies $(-a/f)\wht{\nab} df+\wht{\ri}=λ\wht{g}$, for a smooth nonconstant function $f$ and constants $λ$ and $a>0$. If $a$ is a positive integer, by a result of Kim and Kim, such a metric forms a base for certain warped Einstein metrics. On a manifold $M$ of real dimension at least six, let $(g,\t)$ be a pair consisting of a Kähler metric $g$ which is locally Kähler irreducible, and a nonconstant Killing potential $\t$. Suppose the metric $\wht{g}=g/\t…
First, we show that a warped product of a line and a fiber manifold is weakly conformally flat and quasi Einstein if and only if the fiber is Einstein. Next, we characterize and classify contact (in particular, $K$-contact) Riemannian manifold satisfying weakly (and doubly weakly) conformally flat and quasi-Einstein ($η$-Einstein) conditions. Finally, we provide local classification and characterization of a semi-Riemannian (including the 4-dimensional spacetime) with harmonic Weyl tensor and a non-homothetic conformal (including closed) vector field, in terms of Petrov types and Bach tensor.
In this paper we prove that under certain conditions in a quasi Einstein semi Riemannian warped product the fiber is necessarily a Einstein manifold. We provide all the quasi Einstein manifolds when r Bakry Emery tensor is null, the base is conformal to an n-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space invariant under the action of an n - 1 dimensional translation group and the fiber is Ricci flat. As an application, we have built a family of Ricci flat Einstein warped product whose base is not locally conformally flat.
We study the affine quasi-Einstein Equation for homogeneous surfaces. This gives rise through the modified Riemannian extension to new half conformally flat generalized quasi-Einstein neutral signature $(2,2)$ manifolds, to conformally Einstein manifolds and also to new Einstein manifolds through a warped product construction.
We overview the properties of non-infinitesimal deformations of G2-structures on seven-manifolds, and in particular, focus on deformations that lie in the seven-dimensional representation of G2 and are thus defined by a vector. We then consider deformations from G2-structures with the torsion class having one-dimensional and seven-dimensional components (so-called conformally nearly parallel G2-manifolds) to G2-structures with just a one-dimensional torsion component (nearly parallel G2-manifolds). We find that deformations between such structures exist if and only if the metric is a particula…
In this paper, we mainly study gradient $ρ$-Einstein solitons on doubly warped product manifolds. More explicitly, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a doubly warped product manifold to be a gradient $ρ$-Einstein soliton. We also apply our main result to warped product spacetime models such as generalized Robertson-Walker and standard static spacetimes as well as 3-dimensional Walker manifolds. We finally establish that there is no 3-dimensional esentially conformally symmetric gradient $ρ$-Einstein soliton.
In this paper we take the perspective introduced by Case-Shu-Wei of studying warped product Einstein metrics through the equation for the Ricci curvature of the base space. They call this equation on the base the $m$-Quasi Einstein equation, but we will also call it the $(λ,n+m)$-Einstein equation. In this paper we extend the work of Case-Shu-Wei and some earlier work of Kim-Kim to allow the base to have non-empty boundary. This is a natural case to consider since a manifold without boundary often occurs as a warped product over a manifold with boundary, and in this case we get some interestin…
Warped product manifolds with p-dimensional base, p=1,2, satisfy some curvature conditions of pseudosymmetry type. These conditions are formed from the metric tensor g, the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R, the Ricci tensor S and the Weyl conformal curvature C of the considered manifolds. The main result of the paper states that if p=2 and the fibre is a semi-Riemannian space of constant curvature, if n is greater or equal to 4, then the (0,6)-tensors R.R - Q(S,R) and C.C of such warped products are proportional to the (0,6)-tensor Q(g,C) and the tensor C is expressed by a linear combina…
Let (M,g) be a 2-quasi-Einstein non-conformally flat semi-Riemannian manifold of dimension > 3. We prove that if its Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R is a linear combination of some Kulkarni-Nomizu tensors formed by the metric tensor g, the Ricci tensor S and its square S^2, then some pseudosymmetry type curvature conditions are satisfied. Certain non-conformally flat warped product manifolds with 2-dimensional base, and in particular some spacetimes, are such 2-quasi Einstein manifolds.
This is the first of two companion papers in which a thorough study of the normal form and the first integrability conditions arising from {\em bi-conformal vector fields} is presented. These new symmetry transformations were introduced in {\em Class. Quantum Grav.} \textbf{21}, 2153-2177 and some of their basic properties were addressed there. In our calculations a new affine connection ({\em bi-conformal connection}) arises quite naturally and this connection enables us to find a local characterization of {\em conformally separable} pseudo-Riemannian manifolds (also called double twisted pro…
Let $g$ and $\tilde{g}$ be Riemannian metrics on a noncompact manifold $M$, which are conformally equivalent. We show that under a very mild \emph{first order} control on the conformal factor, the wave operators corresponding to the Hodge-Laplacians $Δ_g$ and $Δ_{\tilde{g}}$ acting on differential forms exist and are complete. We apply this result to Riemannian manifolds with a bounded geometry and more specifically, to warped product Riemannian manifolds with a bounded geometry. Finally, we combine our results with some explicit calculations by Antoci to determine the absolutely continuous sp…
The present note deals with the properties of metric connections $\nabla$ with vectorial torsion $V$ on semi-Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$. We show that the $\nabla$-curvature is symmetric if and only if $V^{\flat}$ is closed, and that $V^\perp$ then defines an $(n-1)$-dimensional integrable distribution on $M^n$. If the vector field $V$ is exact, we show that the $V$-curvature coincides up to global rescaling with the Riemannian curvature of a conformally equivalent metric. We prove that it is possible to construct connections with vectorial torsion on warped products of arbitrary dimension …
We study biharmonic hypersurfaces in a generic Riemannian manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such hypersurfaces generalizing the biharmonic hypersurface equation in space forms studied in \cite{Ji2}, \cite{CH}, \cite{CMO1}, \cite{CMO2}. We then apply the equation to show that the generalized Chen's conjecture is true for totally umbilical biharmonic hypersurfaces in an Einstein space, and construct a (2-parameter) family of conformally flat metrics and a (4-parameter) family of multiply warped product metrics each of which turns the foliation of an upper-half space of $\mathhb…
Explicit formulas for the $G_2$-components of the Riemannian curvature tensor on a manifold with a $G_2$ structure are given in terms of Ricci contractions. We define a conformally invariant Ricci-type tensor that determines the 27-dimensional part of the Weyl tensor and show that its vanishing on compact $G_2$ manifold with closed fundamental form forces the three-form to be parallel. A topological obstruction for the existence of a $G_2$ structure with closed fundamental form is obtained in terms of the integral norms of the curvature components. We produce integral inequalities for closed $…
