We apply the stochastic approximation method to construct a large class of recursive kernel estimators of a probability density, including the one introduced by Hall and Patil (1994). We study the properties of these estimators and compare them with Rosenblatt's nonrecursive estimator. It turns out that, for pointwise estimation, it is preferable to use the nonrecursive Rosenblatt's kernel estimator rather than any recursive estimator. A contrario, for estimation by confidence intervals, it is better to use a recursive estimator rather than Rosenblatt's estimator.
The allocation problem for multivariate stratified random sampling as a problem of stochastic matrix integer mathematical programming is considered. With these aims the asymptotic normality of sample covariance matrices for each strata is established. Some alternative approaches are suggested for its solution. An example is solved by applying the proposed techniques.
We consider a continuous-time stochastic volatility model. The model contains a stationary volatility process, the multivariate density of the finite dimensional distributions of which we aim to estimate. We assume that we observe the process at discrete instants in time. The sampling times will be equidistant with vanishing distance. A multivariate Fourier-type deconvolution kernel density estimator based on the logarithm of the squared processes is proposed to estimate the multivariate volatility density. An expansion of the bias and a bound on the variance are derived. Key words: stochastic…
We present new results for consistency of maximum likelihood estimators with a focus on multivariate mixed models. Our theory builds on the idea of using subsets of the full data to establish consistency of estimators based on the full data. It requires neither that the data consist of independent observations, nor that the observations can be modeled as a stationary stochastic process. Compared to existing asymptotic theory using the idea of subsets we substantially weaken the assumptions, bringing them closer to what suffices in classical settings. We apply our theory in two multivariate mix…
In this paper, we introduce a new multivariate discrete distribution which called multivariate unification of generalized Apostol type distribution (UGAT). Several prop- erties are studied as, moments, probability generating function and other properties. Also, reliability study of distribution are introduced. Maximum likelihood method is used to estimate parameters and numerical method is used to obtain (MLEs).
We consider the identity testing problem - or goodness-of-fit testing problem - in multivariate binomial families, multivariate Poisson families and multinomial distributions. Given a known distribution $p$ and $n$ iid samples drawn from an unknown distribution $q$, we investigate how large $ρ>0$ should be to distinguish, with high probability, the case $p=q$ from the case $d(p,q) \geq ρ$, where $d$ denotes a specific distance over probability distributions. We answer this question in the case of a family of different distances: $d(p,q) = \|p-q\|_t$ for $t \in [1,2]$ where $\|\cdot\|_t$ is the…
In this paper the problem of retrospective change-point detection and estimation in multivariate linear models is considered. The lower bounds for the error of change-point estimation are proved in different cases (one change-point: deterministic and stochastic predictors, multiple change-points). A new method for retrospective change-point detection and estimation is proposed and its main performance characteristics (type 1 and type 2 errors, the error of estimation) are studied for dependent observations in situations of deterministic and stochastic predictors and unknown change-points. We p…
This work considers the allocation problem for multivariate stratified random sampling as a problem of integer non-linear stochastic multiobjective mathematical programming. With this goal in mind the asymptotic distribution of the vector of sample variances is studied. Two alternative approaches are suggested for solving the allocation problem for multivariate stratified random sampling. An example is presented by applying the different proposed techniques.
The Behrens-Fisher problem is a well-known hypothesis testing problem in statistics concerning two-sample mean comparison. In this article, we confirm one conjecture in Eaton and Olshen (1972), which provides stochastic bounds for the multivariate Behrens-Fisher test statistic under the null hypothesis. We also extend their results on the stochastic ordering of random quotients to the arbitrary finite dimensional case. This work can also be seen as a generalization of Hsu (1938) that provided the bounds for the univariate Behrens-Fisher problem. The results obtained in this article can be used…
In this paper a new approach for constructing \emph{multivariate} Gaussian random fields (GRFs) using systems of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) has been introduced and applied to simulated data and real data. By solving a system of SPDEs, we can construct multivariate GRFs. On the theoretical side, the notorious requirement of non-negative definiteness for the covariance matrix of the GRF is satisfied since the constructed covariance matrices with this approach are automatically symmetric positive definite. Using the approximate stochastic weak solutions to the systems of SP…
We consider the problem of estimating the population probability distribution given a finite set of multivariate samples, using the maximum entropy approach. In strict keeping with Jaynes' original definition, our precise formulation of the problem considers contributions only from the smoothness of the estimated distribution (as measured by its entropy) and the loss functional associated with its goodness-of-fit to the sample data, and in particular does not make use of any additional constraints that cannot be justified from the sample data alone. By mapping the general multivariate problem …
We establish a Berry--Esseen bound for general multivariate nonlinear statistics by developing a new multivariate-type randomized concentration inequality. The bound is the best possible for many known statistics. As applications, Berry--Esseen bounds for M-estimators and averaged stochastic gradient descent algorithms are obtained.
We extend known saddlepoint tail probability approximations to multivariate cases, including multivariate conditional cases. Our approximation applies to both continuous and lattice variables, and requires the existence of a cumulant generating function. The method is applied to some examples, including a real data set from a case-control study of endometrial cancer. The method contains less terms and is easier to implement than existing methods, while showing an accuracy comparable to those methods.
Researchers are often interested in drawing inferences regarding the order between two experimental groups on the basis of multivariate response data. Since standard multivariate methods are designed for two-sided alternatives, they may not be ideal for testing for order between two groups. In this article we introduce the notion of the linear stochastic order and investigate its properties. Statistical theory and methodology are developed to both estimate the direction which best separates two arbitrary ordered distributions and to test for order between the two groups. The new methodology ge…
A multivariate survival function of Weibull Distribution is developed by expanding the theorem by Lu and Bhattacharyya (1990). From the survival function, the probability density function, the cumulative probability function, the determinant of the Jacobian Matrix, and the general moment are derived. The proposed model is also applied to the tumor appearance data of female rats.
We use the holonomic gradient method to evaluate the probability content of a simplex region under a multivariate normal distribution. This probability equals to the integral of the probability density function of the multivariate Gaussian distribution on the simplex region. For this purpose, we generalize the inclusion--exclusion identity which was given for polyhedra, to the faces of a polyhedron. This extended inclusion--exclusion identity enables us to calculate the derivatives of the function associated with the probability content of a polyhedron in general position. We show that these d…
Multivariate rapid variation describes decay rates of joint light tails of a multivariate distribution. We impose a local uniformity condition to control decay variation of distribution tails along different directions, and using higher-order tail dependence of copulas, we prove that a rapidly varying multivariate density implies rapid variation of the joint distribution tails. As a corollary, rapid variation of skew-elliptical distributions is established under the assumption that the underlying density generators belong to the max-domain of attraction of the Gumbel distribution.
Some improved Gaussian correlation inequalities for symmetrical n-rectangles extended to some multivariate gamma distributions and some further probability inequalities
Hadar and Russell (1974) and Levy and Paroush (1974) presented sufficient conditions for multivariate stochastic dominance when the distributions involved are continuous with compact support. Further generalizations involved either independence assumptions (Sacarsini (1988)) or the introduction of new concepts like 'correlation increasing transformation' (Epstein and Tanny (1980), Tchen (1980), Mayer (2013)). In this paper, we present a direct proof that extends the original results to the general case where the involved distributions are only assumed to have compact support. This result has i…
This article discusses modelling of the tail of a multivariate distribution function by means of a large deviation principle (LDP), and its application to the estimation of the probability of a multivariate extreme event from a sample of n iid random vectors, with the probability bounded by powers of sample size with exponents below -1. One way to view classical tail limits is as limits of probability ratios. In contrast, the tail LDP provides asymptotic bounds or limits for log-probability ratios. After standardising the marginals to standard exponential, dependence is represented by a homoge…
Stochastic linear combinations of some random vectors are studied where the distribution of the random vectors and the joint distribution of their coefficients are Dirichlet. A method is provided for calculating the distribution of these combinations which has been studied before by some authors. Our main result is a generalization of some existing results with a simpler proof.
We provide new, mild conditions for strict stationarity and ergodicity of a class of BEKK processes. By exploiting that the processes can be represented as multivariate stochastic recurrence equations, we characterize the tail behavior of the associated stationary laws. Specifically, we show that the each component of the BEKK processes is regularly varying with some tail index. In general, the tail index differs along the components, which contrasts most of the existing literature on the tail behavior of multivariate GARCH processes.
A pair of lower and upper cumulative distribution functions, also called probability box or p-box, is among the most popular models used in imprecise probability theory. They arise naturally in expert elicitation, for instance in cases where bounds are specified on the quantiles of a random variable, or when quantiles are specified only at a finite number of points. Many practical and formal results concerning p-boxes already exist in the literature. In this paper, we provide new efficient tools to construct multivariate p-boxes and develop algorithms to draw inferences from them. For this pur…
In many problems, a sensible estimator of a possibly multivariate monotone function may itself fail to be monotone. We study the correction of such an estimator obtained via projection onto the space of functions monotone over a finite grid in the domain. We demonstrate that this corrected estimator has no worse supremal estimation error than the initial estimator, and that analogously corrected confidence bands contain the true function whenever the initial bands do, at no loss to average or maximal band width. Additionally, we demonstrate that the corrected estimator is uniformly asymptotica…
Hydroclimatic processes are characterized by heterogeneous spatiotemporal correlation structures and marginal distributions that can be continuous, mixed-type, discrete or even binary. Simulating exactly such processes can greatly improve hydrological analysis and design. Yet this challenging task is accomplished often by ad hoc and approximate methodologies that are devised for specific variables and purposes. In this study, a single framework is proposed allowing the exact simulation of processes with any marginal and any correlation structure. We unify, extent, and improve of a general-purp…
General multivariate distributions are notoriously expensive to sample from, particularly the high-dimensional posterior distributions in PDE-constrained inverse problems. This paper develops a sampler for arbitrary continuous multivariate distributions that is based on low-rank surrogates in the tensor-train format. We construct a tensor-train approximation to the target probability density function using the cross interpolation, which requires a small number of function evaluations. For sufficiently smooth distributions the storage required for the TT approximation is moderate, scaling linea…
