Stochastic linear combinations of some random vectors are studied where the distribution of the random vectors and the joint distribution of their coefficients are Dirichlet. A method is provided for calculating the distribution of these combinations which has been studied before by some authors. Our main result is a generalization of some existing results with a simpler proof.
In the multivariate one-sample location model, we propose a class of flexible robust, affine-equivariant L-estimators of location, for distributions invoking affine-invariance of Mahalanobis distances of individual observations. An involved iteration process for their computation is numerically illustrated.
This article gives a synopsis on new developments in affine invariant tests for multivariate normality in an i.i.d.-setting, with special emphasis on asymptotic properties of several classes of weighted $L^2$-statistics. Since weighted $L^2$-statistics typically have limit normal distributions under fixed alternatives to normality, they open ground for a neighborhood of model validation for normality. The paper also reviews several other invariant tests for this problem, notably the energy test, and it presents the results of a large-scale simulation study. All tests under study are implemente…
We study weighted M-estimators for $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued clustered data and give sufficient conditions for their consistency. Their asymptotic normality is established with estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix. We address the robustness of these estimators in terms of their breakdown point. Comparison with the unweighted case is performed with some numerical studies. They highlight that optimal weights maximizing the relative efficiency have a bad impact on the breakdown point.
We give the exact distribution of the average of n independent beta random variables weighted by the selected cuts of (0, 1) by the order statistics of a random sample of size n-1 from the uniform distribution U(0,1), for each n. A new integral transformation that is similar to generalized Stieltjes transform is given with various properties. The result of Soltani and Roozegar [On distribution of randomly ordered uniform incremental weighted averages: Divided difference approach. Statist Probab Lett. 2012, 82(5):1012-1020] with this new transform and also integral representation of the Gauss-h…
A multivariable measurement error model $AX \approx B$ is considered. Here $A$ and $B$ are input and output matrices of measurements and $X$ is a rectangular matrix of fixed size to be estimated. The errors in $[A,B]$ are row-wise independent, but within each row the errors may be correlated. Some of the columns are observed without errors and the error covariance matrices may differ from row to row. The total covariance structure of the errors is known up to a scalar factor. The fully weighted total least squares estimator of $X$ is studied. We give conditions for asymptotic normality of the …
A tail empirical process for heavy-tailed and right-censored data is introduced and its Gaussian approximation is established. In this context, a (weighted) new Hill-type estimator for positive extreme value index is proposed and its consistency and asymptotic normality are proved by means of the aforementioned process in the framework of second-order conditions of regular variation. In a comparative simulation study, the newly defined estimator is seen to perform better than the already existing ones in terms of both bias and mean squared error. As a real data example, we apply our estimation…
We apply the holonomic gradient method to compute the distribution function of a weighted sum of independent noncentral chi-square random variables. It is the distribution function of the squared length of a multivariate normal random vector. We treat this distribution as an integral of the normalizing constant of the Fisher-Bingham distribution on the unit sphere and make use of the partial differential equations for the Fisher-Bingham distribution.
A weighted likelihood technique for robust estimation of a multivariate Wrapped Normal distribution for data points scattered on a p-dimensional torus is proposed. The occurrence of outliers in the sample at hand can badly compromise inference for standard techniques such as maximum likelihood method. Therefore, there is the need to handle such model inadequacies in the fitting process by a robust technique and an effective down-weighting of observations not following the assumed model. Furthermore, the employ of a robust method could help in situations of hidden and unexpected substructures i…
This paper addresses the problem of estimating the extreme value index in presence of random censoring for distributions in the Weibull domain of attraction. The methodologies introduced in [Worms (2014)], in the heavy-tailed case, are adapted here to the negative extreme value index framework, leading to the definition of weighted versions of the popular moments of relative excesses with arbitrary exponent. This leads to the definition of two families of estimators (with an adaptation of the so called Moment estimator as a particular case), for which the consistency is proved under a first or…
The contribution of this study is twofold: First, we propose an efficient algorithm for the computation of the (weighted) maximum likelihood estimators for the parameters of the multivariate Student-$t$ distribution, which we call generalized multivariate myriad filter. Second, we use the generalized multivariate myriad filter in a nonlocal framework for the denoising of images corrupted by different kinds of noise. The resulting method is very flexible and can handle heavy-tailed noise such as Cauchy noise, as well as the other extreme, namely Gaussian noise. Furthermore, we detail how the li…
We study a novel class of affine invariant and consistent tests for multivariate normality. The tests are based on a characterization of the standard $d$-variate normal distribution by means of the unique solution of an initial value problem connected to a partial differential equation, which is motivated by a multivariate Stein equation. The test criterion is a suitably weighted $L^2$-statistic. We derive the limit distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis as well as under contiguous and fixed alternatives to normality. A consistent estimator of the limiting variance under …
We employ a general Monte Carlo method to test composite hypotheses of goodness-of-fit for several popular multivariate models that can accommodate both asymmetry and heavy tails. Specifically, we consider weighted L2-type tests based on a discrepancy measure involving the distance between empirical characteristic functions and thus avoid the need for employing corresponding population quantities which may be unknown or complicated to work with. The only requirements of our tests are that we should be able to draw samples from the distribution under test and possess a reasonable method of esti…
