The structure and electronic density of states in layered LnFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (Ln=La,Sm; $x$=0.0, 0.125, 0.25) are investigated using density functional theory. For the $x$=0.0 system we predict a complex potential energy surface, formed by close-lying single-well and double-well potentials, which gives rise to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition, appearance of the magnetic order, and an anomaly in the specific heat capacity observed experimentally at temperatures below $\sim$140--160 K. We propose a mechanism for these transitions and suggest that these phenomena are generic to all compounds containing FeAs layers. For $x>$0.0 we demonstrate that transition temperatures to the superconducting state and their dependence on $x$ correlate well with the calculated magnitude of the electronic density of states at the Fermi energy.
In the family of the iron-based superconductors, the $RE$FeAsO-type compounds (with $RE$ being a rare-earth metal) exhibit the highest bulk superconducting transition temperatures ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) up to $55\ \textrm{K}$ and thus hold the key to the elusive pairing mechanism. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the intrinsic electronic structure of SmFe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$AsO ($T_{\mathrm{c}}=18\ \textrm{K}$) is highly nontrivial and consists of multiple band-edge singularities in close proximity to the Fermi level. However, it remains unclear whether these singularities are generic to th…
Electronic structures of superconducting Re24Nb5 and Re24Ti5 have been calculated employing the full-potential local-orbital method within the density functional theory. The investigations were focused on the influence of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on band structures and Fermi surfaces of these non-centrosymmetric systems. The predicted here density of states at the Fermi level for Re24Ti5 is abnormally low with respect to that deduced from previous heat capacity measurements. This discrepancy suggests an intermediate coupled superconducting state in Re24Ti5. The differences between…
We present a systematic study for understanding the relation between electronic correlation and superconductivity in C60 and aromatic compounds. We derived, from first principles, extended Hubbard models for twelve compounds; fcc K3C60, Rb3C60, Cs3C60 (with three different lattice constants), A15 Cs3C60 (with four different lattice constants), doped solid picene, coronene, and phenanthrene. We show that these compounds are strongly correlated and have a similar energy scale of the bandwidth and interaction parameters. However, they have a different trend in the relation between the strength of…
We performed all-electron ab initio self-consistent field Hartree-Fock linear combination of atomic orbital, in which electronic correlation using density functional were included to perform electronic calculations in MgB2 new superconductor. Superconductivity in this compound was correlated with existence of Px,y band holes at Gamma point.
The local electronic structures of La2CuO4, three members of the Yttrium-family (YBa2Cu3O6, YBa2Cu3O7, and YBa2Cu4O8), and to some extent of Nd2CuO4 have been determined using all-electron ab-initio cluster calculations for clusters comprising up to thirteen planar copper atoms associated with their nearest planar and apical oxygen atoms. Spin-polarized calculations in the framework of density functional theory have enabled an estimation of the superexchange couplings J. Electric field gradients at the planar copper sites are determined and their dependence on the occupation of the various ato…
Electronic structures of superconducting ternaries: La3Ni4Si4, La3Ni4Ge4, La3Pd4Si4, La3Pd4Ge4, and their non-superconducting counterpart, La3Rh4Ge4, have been calculated employing the full-potential local-orbital method within the density functional theory. Our investigations were focused particularly on densities of states (DOSs) at the Fermi level with respect to previous experimental heat capacity data, and Fermi surfaces (FSs) being very similar for all considered here compounds. In each of these systems, the FS originating from several bands contains both holelike and electronlike sheets…
Bi-based cuprate superconductors are important materials for both fundamental research and applications. As in other cuprates, the superconducting phase in the Bi compounds lies close to an antiferromagnetic phase. Our density functional theory calculations based on the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) exchange correlation functional in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ reveal the persistence of magnetic moments on the copper ions for oxygen concentrations ranging from the pristine phase to the optimally hole-doped compound. We also find the existence of ferrimagnetic solutions…
First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structure and the Fermi surface of the newly discovered low-temperature superconductor: fluorine-doped WO3. We find that F doping provides the transition of the insulating tungsten trioxide into a metallic-like phase WO3-xFx, where the near-Fermi states are formed mainly from W 5d with admixture of O 2p orbitals. The cooperative effect of fluorine additives in WO3 consists in change of electronic concentration as well as the lattice constant. At probing their influence on the near-Fermi states separately, the dominant r…
Using ab-initio calculations, we study the electronic structure of gallium-doped germanium, which was found recently to be a superconductor, with a critical temperature of 0.5 Kelvins, and a particularly low density of Cooper pairs. The calculations of the electronic properties reveal that no sign of an impurity band is observed, and that the Fermi level lies in the valence band of Germanium. Moreover, the calculation of the phonon frequencies shows that a new mode associated to the Ga atom is appearing, around 175$ cm-1.
The ionization energy theory is used to calculate the evolution of the resistivity and specific heat curves with respect to different doping elements in the recently discovered superconducting Pnictide materials. Subsequently, the electron-conduction mechanism in the Pnictides above the structural transition temperature is explained unambiguously, which is also consistent with other strongly correlated matter, such as cuprates, manganites, titanates and magnetic semiconductors. Therefore, the superconductivity is not uniquely corresponds to the electronic properties above the structural transi…
Band structures of the pressure-induced, heavy-fermion superconductor Ce2Ni3Ge5 and its non-superconducting, mixed-valence isostructural (Ibam) counterpart Ce2Ni3Si5 have been calculated employing the full-potential local-orbital code. Both the local density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U approaches were applied. These investigations were focused particularly on the topology of the Fermi surfaces (FSs) of the compounds. The results show that the FSs are quite similar in these systems and exist in four bands, containing three-dimensional holelike and electronlike sheets. However, the specific FS…
Superconductors without inversion symmetry in their crystal structure are known to exhibit unconventional properties. Recently, based on the measured temperature dependence of the magnetic field penetration depth, superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric $\mathrm{ThCoC_2}$ was proposed to be a nodal $d$-wave and mediated by the spin fluctuations. Moreover, a non-BCS behavior of the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat and the magnetic upper critical field were reported. In this work, the electronic structure, phonons and electron-phonon coupling are studied in $\mathrm{ThCoC_2…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to the error in figure 2, we did not optimized c-value of the supercell, so the results can not give the true physics of this material.
Band structures of pressure-induced CeNiGe3 and exotic BCS-like YNiGe3 superconductors have been calculated employing the full-potential local-orbital code. Both the local density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U treatment of the exchange-correlation energy were used. The investigations were focused on differences between electronic properties of both compounds. Our results indicate that the Ce-based system exhibits higher density of states at the Fermi level, dominated by the Ce 4f states, in contrast to its non f-electron counterpart. The Fermi surface (FS) of each compound originates from thre…
We present an ab initio $GW$ self-energy calculation of the electronic structure of LaNiO$_2$. With respect to density-functional theory we find that in $GW$ the La 4$f$ states undergo an important $+$2 eV upward shift from the Fermi level, while the O 2$p$ states are pulled down by $-$1.5 eV, thus reinforcing the charge-transfer character of this material. However, $GW$ many-body effects leave the $d$-like bands at the Fermi level almost unaffected, so that the Fermi-surface topology is preserved, unlike in cuprates.
The geometrical and electronic structure of tripotassium doped phenanthrene, \ce{K3C14H10}, have been studied by first-principles density functional theory. The main effect of potassium doping is to inject charge in the narrow phenanthrene conduction band, rendering the system metallic. The Fermi surface for the experimental X-rays unit cell is composed of two sheets with marked one and two dimensional character respectively.
The structural, elastic, and electronic properties of the very recently discovered ternary silicide superconductor, Li2IrSi3, have been calculated using ab-initio technique. We have carried out the plane-wave pseudopotential approach within the framework of the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) implemented within the CASTEP code. The calculated structural parameters show a reasonable agreement with the experimental results. Elastic moduli of this interesting material have been calculated for the first time. The electronic band structure and electronic energy density of states in…
We show, by means of ab-initio calculations, that electron-electron correlations play an important role in potassium-doped picene ($K_x$-picene), recently characterized as a superconductor with $T_c = 18K$. The inclusion of exchange interactions by means of hybrid functionals reproduces the correct gap for the undoped compound and predicts an antiferromagnetic state for $x=3$, where superconductivity has been observed. The latter finding is compatible with a sizable value of the correlation strength, in agreement with simple estimates. Our results highlight the similarity between potassium-dop…
Using projector augmented wave approach within the generalized gradient approximation, we have studied the structural property and electronic structure of ZrB12. The calculated lattice constants and bulk modulus are in good agreement with the available experimental values. A detailed study of the electronic structure and the charge-density redistribution reveals the features of strong covalent B-B and weak covalent Zr-B bondings in ZrB12. The states at the Fermi level mainly come from the $σ$-$p_{y}$ and $π$-$p_{z}$ orbitals of boron atoms, which are slightly hybridized with the $t_{2g}$-$d_{x…
The elastic, thermodynamic, electronic, and optical properties of recently discovered and potentially technologically important transition metal boride NbRuB, have been investigated using the density functional formalism. Both generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local density approximation (LDA) were used for geometrical optimization and for estimation of various elastic moduli and constants. The optical properties of NbRuB have been studied for the first time with different photon polarizations. The frequency (energy) dependences of various optical constants compliment quite well to …
The discovery of iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides as a new class of unconventional superconductors in 2008 has generated an enourmous amount of experimental and theoretical work that identifies these materials as correlated metals with multiorbital physics, where magnetism, nematicity and superconductivity are competing phases that appear as a function of pressure and doping. A microscopic understanding of the appearance of these phases is crucial in order to determine the nature of superconductivity in these systems. Here we review our recent theoretical efforts to describe and understan…
This work reports on the elastic and electronic properties of the newly discovered superconductor Th2NiC2 (A .Machado, et al., Supercond. Sci. Technol. 25 (2012) 045010) as obtained within ab initio calculations. We found that Th2NiC2 is mechanically stable and it will behave as a ductile material exhibiting enhanced elastic anisotropy in shear and a rather low hardness Our data reveal that for Th2NiC2 the Fermi level is located in a deep DOS minimum and the experimentally observed increase in TC in the sequence Th2NiC2 -> Th1.8Sc0.2NiC2 may be explained by the growth of N(EF). We also specula…
