The ionization energy theory is used to calculate the evolution of the resistivity and specific heat curves with respect to different doping elements in the recently discovered superconducting Pnictide materials. Subsequently, the electron-conduction mechanism in the Pnictides above the structural transition temperature is explained unambiguously, which is also consistent with other strongly correlated matter, such as cuprates, manganites, titanates and magnetic semiconductors. Therefore, the superconductivity is not uniquely corresponds to the electronic properties above the structural transition temperature. Detailed prediction are given on these compounds for various doping elements, namely, La(Sm,Ce,Ba,Sr,Ca)FeAsO(F,Cl,Br) and Ba(Sr,Ca,K,Rb,Cs)Fe(2)As(2).
Effective low-energy Hamiltonians for several different families of iron-based superconductors are compared after deriving them from the downfolding scheme based on first-principles calculations. Systematic dependences of the derived model parameters on the families are elucidated, many of which are understood from the systematic variation of the covalency between Fe-3d and pnictogen-/chalcogen-p orbitals.
By using variational Monte Carlo method, we examine an effective low-energy model for LaFeAsO derived from an ab initio downfolding scheme. We show that quantum and many-body fluctuations near a quantum critical point largely reduce the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered moment and the model not only quantitatively reproduces the small ordered moment in LaFeAsO, but also explains the diverse dependence on LaFePO, BaFe2As2 and FeTe. We also find that LaFeAsO is under large orbital fluctuations, sandwiched by the AF Mott insulator and weakly correlated metals. The orbital fluctuations and Dirac-cone…

The ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure exhibits a spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at 140 K, very similar to LaFeAsO, the parent compound of the iron arsenide superconductors. BaFe2As2 is a poor Pauli-paramagnetic metal and undergoes a structural and magnetic phase transition at 140 K, accompanied by strong anomalies in the specific heat, electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility. In the course of this transition, the space group symmetry changes from tetragonal (I4/mmm) to orthorhombic (Fmmm). 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy experiments show a singl…
Raman scattering experiments on LaFeAsO with splitted antiferromagnetic (T_AFM = 140 K) and tetragonal-orthorhombic (T_S = 155 K) transitions show a quasi-elastic peak (QEP) in B2g symmetry (2 Fe tetragonal cell) that fades away below ~T_AFM and is ascribed to electronic nematic fluctuations. A scaling of the reported shear modulus with the T-dependence of the QEP height rather than the QEP area indicates that magnetic degrees of freedom drive the structural transition. The large separation between T_S and T_AFM in LaFeAsO compared with their coincidence in BaFe2As2 manifests itself in slower …
We investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the hypothetical compound BaFePn2 (Pn = As and Sb), which is isostructural to the parent compound of the high temperature superconductor LaFeAsO1-xFx. Using density functional theory, we show that the Fermi surface, electronic structure and the spin density wave instability of BaFePn2 are very similar to the Fe based superconductors. Additionally, there are very dispersive metallic bands of a spacer Pn layer, which are almost decoupled from FePn layer. Our results show that experimental study of BaFePn2 can test the role of …
The wave-vector (q) and doping dependences of the magnetic energy, iron moment, and effective exchange interactions in LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2, and SrFe2As2\ are studied by self-consistent LSDA calculations for co-planar spin spirals. For the undoped compounds, the calculated total energy, E(q), reaches its minimum at q corresponding to stripe anti-ferromagnetic order. In LaFeAsO, this minimum becomes flat already at low levels of electron-doping and shifts to an incommensurate q at delta=0.2, where delta is the number of additional electrons (delta>0) or holes (delta<0) per Fe. In BaFe2As2 and SrFe…
We present a theoretical ab-initio approach that allows us to explicitly calculate the superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) of the iron-based superconductors of LaFeAsO1-xFx, SmFeAsO1-xFx, NdFeAsO1-xFx, Ba1-xKxFe2As2, FeSe and LiFeAs that fit perfectly with the experiments. We consider recent evidence that electron-phonon coupling may have been underestimated previously, and a prediction that antiferromagnetism can greatly enhance electron-phonon coupling through localized iron d orbitals. We then include the contribution of these localized orbitals in a McMillan formalism. In addition…
The newly discovered iron-based superconductors have triggered renewed enormous research interest in the condensed matter physics community. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a low-energy local probe for studying strongly correlated electrons, and particularly important for high-$T_{\rm C}$ superconductors. In this paper, we review NMR studies on the structural transition, antiferromagnetic order, spin fluctuations, and superconducting properties of several iron-based high-$T_{\rm C}$ superconductors, including LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$, BaFe$_2$As$_2$, Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2…
Specific heats and transport quantities of the LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11 system have been measured, and the results are discussed together with those reported previously by our group mainly for LaFe1-yCoyAsO0.89F0.11 and LaFeAsO0.89-xF0.11+x systems. The y dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient gamma can basically be understood by using the rigid-band picture, where Ni ions provide 2 electrons to the host conduction bands and behave as nonmagnetic impurities. The superconducting transition temperature Tc of LaFe1-yNiyAsO0.89F0.11 becomes zero, as the carrier density p (=2y+0.11) d…
We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) / nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. There are two superconducting domes in this material. The first one appears at 0.03 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.2 with $T_{\rm c}$$^{max}$ = 27 K, and the second one at 0.25 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.75 with $T_{\rm c}$$^{max}$ = 30 K. By NMR and TEM, we demonstrate that a $C4$-to-$C2$ structural phase transition (SPT) takes place above both domes, with the transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ varying strongly with $x$. In the first dome, the S…
By using a two-step method, we successfully synthesized the iron based new superconductor LaFeAsO_{0.9}F_{0.1-δ}$. The resistive transition curves under different magnetic fields were measured, leading to the determination of the upper critical field Hc2(T) of this new superconductor. The value of Hc2 at zero temperature is estimated to be about 50 Tesla roughly. In addition, the Hall effect and magnetoresistance were measured in wide temperature region. A negative Hall coefficient R_H has been found, implying a dominant conduction mainly by electron-like charge carriers in this material. The …
To examine the role of magnetism in superconductivity of iron-based superconductors, we first present first-principles optical calculations on three representative parent compounds: LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2 and LiFeAs. Both nonmagnetic (NM) and spin-density wave (SDW) with striped antiferromagnetic order are considered. Due to their layer structure, these compounds in NM states show anomalously large optical anisotropy with a conductivity ratio $σ_{zz}/σ{xx}$ as large as 313% in LaFeAsO and 530% in LiFeAs. Interestingly the giant optical anisotropy is significantly suppressed by SDW. On the other han…
The determination of the most appropriate starting point for the theoretical description of Fe-based materials hosting high temperature superconductivity remains among the most important unsolved problem in this relatively new field. Most of the work to date has focused on the pnictides, with LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2 and LiFeAs being representative parent compounds of three families known as 1111, 122 and 111, respectively. This Topic Review examines recent progress in this area, with particular emphasis on the implication of experimental data which have provided evidence for the presence of electron…
We have synthesized a quaternary fluoroarsenide SrFeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure (P4/nmm, a = 0.3999 and c = 0.8973 nm), which is composed of an alternately stacked (FeAs)- and (SrF)+ layers, analogous to the FeAs-based superconductor LaFeAsO. SrFeAsF shows metallic type conduction with the anomaly at ~180 K. The partial replacement of the Fe with Co suppresses the anomaly and induces the superconductivity, while the maximal Tc (4 K for SrFe0.875Co0.125AsF) is much lower than that of the Co-substituted LaFeAsO. Replacement of (LaO)+ layers with (SrF)+ layers results in a enlargement of…
Resistivity, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on SrFe2As2 samples evidence a behavior very similar to that observed in LaFeAsO and BaFe2As2 with the difference that the formation of the SDW and the lattice deformation occur in a pronounced first order transition at T_0=205K. Comparing further data evidences that the Fe-magnetism is stronger in SrFe2As2 and in EuFe2As2 than in the other layered FeAs systems investigated up to now. Full potential LDA band structure calculations confirm the large similarity between the compounds, especially for the relevant low ene…
X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies are jointly used as fast probes to determine the evolution as a function of doping of the fluctuating local magnetic moments in K- and Cr- hole-doped BaFe2As2. An increase in the local moment with hole-doping is found, supporting the theoretical scenario in which a Mott insulating state that would be realized for half-filled conduction bands has an influence throughout the phase diagram of these iron-pnictides.
We report on electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall effect measurements in four non-superconducting BaFe$_{2-x}$TM$_x$As$_2$ (TM = Mn, Cu and Ni) single crystals with small values of the chemical substitution $x$. The spin density wave (SDW) ordering that occurs in these systems at temperatures $T\sim$ (120 - 140) K, in close vicinity to a tetragonal/orthorhombic transition, produces significant modifications in their magneto-transport properties. While in the magnetically ordered phase the MR is positive and its magnitude increases with decreasing temperatures, in the paramag…
Recent experimental studies have revealed several unexpected properties of Mn-doped BaFe2As2. These include extension of the stripe-like magnetic (pi,0) phase to high temperatures above a critical Mn concentration only, the presence of diffusive and weakly temperature dependent magnetic (pi,pi) checkerboard scattering, and an apparent absent structural distortion from tetragonal to orthorhombic. Here, we study the effects of magnetic impurities both below and above the Néel transition temperature within a real-space five-band model appropriate to the iron pnictides. We show how these experimen…
We present an ab-initio study of Ru substitution in two different compounds, BaFe2As2 and LaFeAsO, pure and F-doped. Despite the many similarities among them, Ru substitution has very different effects on these compounds. By means of an unfolding technique, which allows us to trace back the electronic states into the primitive cell of the pure compounds, we are able to disentangle the effects brought by the local structural deformations and by the impurity potential to the states at the Fermi level. Our results are compared with available experiments and show: i) satisfying agreement of the ca…
In this Letter we report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope analysis of Mn-substituted LaFeAsO samples, demonstrating that a static incommensurate modulated structure develops across the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, whose modulation wave-vector depends on the Mn content. The incommensurate structural distortion is likely originating from a charge-density-wave instability, a periodic modulation of the density of conduction electrons associated with a modulation of the atomic positions. Our results add a new component in the physics o…
A simple two-band model is used to describe the magnitude and temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, Hall coefficient and Seebeck data from undoped and Co doped BaFe2As2. Overlapping rigid parabolic electron and hole bands are considered as a model of the electronic structure of the FeAs-based semimetals. The model has only three parameters: the electron and hole effective masses and the position of the valence band maximum with respect to the conduction band minimum. The model is able to reproduce in a semiquantitative fashion the magnitude and temperature dependence of many o…
We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the band structure of BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2, two of the parent compounds of the iron arsenic high temperature superconductors. We find clear evidence for band back folding and hybridization demonstrating that conduction electrons are strongly affected by the emergence of magnetic order. Our high quality data revealed that although the Fermi surface is strongly three-dimensional, it does indeed have long parallel segments along the kz direction that can lead to the emergence of magnetic order. More interestingly, we find very unu…
Recently, An electron-doped 12442-type iron-based superconductor BaTh$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$(N$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$)$_2$ has been successfully synthesized with high-temperature solid-state reactions on basis of a structural design. The inter-block-layer charge transfer between the constituent units of "BaFe$_2$As$_2$" and "ThFeAsN$_{0.7}$O$_{0.3}$" was found to be essential to stabilize the target compound. Dominant electron-type conduction and bulk superconducting transition at ~22 K were demonstrated.
The phase diagram of the high-Tc cuprates is dominated by the Mott insulating phase of the parent compounds. As we approach it from large doping, a standard Fermi-liquid gradually turns into a bad non-Fermi liquid metal, a process which culminates in the pseudogap regime, in which the antinodal region in momentum space acquires a gap before reaching a fully gapped Mott state. Here we show that experiments for electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2 support an analogous scenario. The doping evolution is dominated by the influence of a Mott insulator that would be realized for half-filled conduction b…
