Bi-based cuprate superconductors are important materials for both fundamental research and applications. As in other cuprates, the superconducting phase in the Bi compounds lies close to an antiferromagnetic phase. Our density functional theory calculations based on the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) exchange correlation functional in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ reveal the persistence of magnetic moments on the copper ions for oxygen concentrations ranging from the pristine phase to the optimally hole-doped compound. We also find the existence of ferrimagnetic solutions in the heavily doped compounds, which are expected to suppress superconductivity.
Pure electronic Raman spectra with no phonon structures superimposed to the electronic continuum, are reported, in optimally doped HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6+δ} single crystals (T_{c }=126 K). As a consequence, the spectra in the A_{1g }, B_{1g } and B_{2g } symmetries, including the crucial low energy frequency dependence of the electronic scattering, are directly and reliably measured. The B_{2g } and, most strikingly, the B_{1g } spectra exhibit a strong intrinsic linear term, which suggests that the nodes are shifted from the [110] and [1\bar{1}0] directions, a result inconsistent with a pure d_…
Recent electronic structure calculations for the prototypical lowdimensional cuprate compounds CaCuO2 ans SrCuO2 performed by Wu et. al. (J. Phys.: Condens. Matter v. 11 p.4637 (1999))are critically reconsidered, applying high precision full-potential bandstructure methods. It is shown that the bandstructure calculations presented by the authors contain several important inconsistencies, which make their main conclusions highly questionable.
The electronic structure of the infinite layer compound CaCuO$_2$ has been calculated with the B3LYP hybrid density functional. The mixing of the Hartree-Fock exchange in the exchange-correlation energy separated the bands crossing Fermi energy to form an antiferromagnetic insulating ground state of charge transfer type. The complete elimination of the self-interaction through the exact exchange and the optimized gradient-corrected correlation energy significantly improved theoretical results. The theoretical energy gap and magnetic moment are in excellent agreement with the experiments. The r…
The effects of structural supermodulation with the period $λ\approx26$ Å\ along the $b$-axis of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ have been observed in photoemission studies from the early days as the presence of diffraction replicas of the intrinsic electronic structure. Although predicted to affect the electronic structure of the Cu-O plane, the influence of supermodulation potential on Cu-O electrons has never been observed in photoemission. In the present study, we clearly see, for the first time, the effects on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ electronic structure - we observe a hybridizatio…
We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements of optimally-doped and overdoped Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals that reveal the presence of a weak temperature-dependent quasi-static internal magnetic field of electronic origin in the superconducting (SC) and pseudogap (PG) phases. In both samples the internal magnetic field persists up to 160~K, but muon diffusion prevents following the evolution of the field to higher temperatures. We consider the evidence from our measurments in support of PG order parameter candidates, namely, electronic loop currents and…
A complete knowledge of its excitation spectrum could greatly benefit efforts to understand the unusual form of superconductivity occurring in the lightly hole-doped copper-oxides. Here we use tunnelling spectroscopy to measure the T\to 0 spectrum of electronic excitations N(E) over a wide range of hole-density p in superconducting Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+/delta}. We introduce a parameterization for N(E) based upon an anisotropic energy-gap /Delta (\vec k)=/Delta_{1}(Cos(k_{x})-Cos(k_{y}))/2 plus an effective scattering rate which varies linearly with energy /Gamma_{2}(E) . We demonstrate tha…
Based on angle resolved photoemission spectra measured on different systems at different dopings, momenta and photon energies, we show that the anomalously large spectral linewidth in the $(π,0)$ region of optimal doped and underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ has significant contributions from the bilayer splitting, and that the scattering rate in this region is considerably smaller than previously estimated. This new picture of the electronic excitation near $(π,0)$ puts additional experimental constraints on various microscopic theories and data analysis.
Very high energy resolution photoemission experiments on high quality samples of optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ show new features in the low-energy electronic excitations. A marked change in the binding energy and temperature dependence of the near-nodal scattering rates is observed near the superconducting transition temperature, $T_C$. The temperature slope of the scattering rate measured at low energy shows a discontinuity at ~$T_C$. In the superconducting state, coherent excitations are found with the scattering rates showing a cubic dependence on frequency and temperature. …
Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$, we have made the first observation of a mass renormalization or "kink" in the E vs. $\vec k$ dispersion relation localized near $(π, 0)$. Compared to the kink observed along the nodal direction, this new effect is clearly stronger, appears at a lower energy near 40 meV, and is only present in the superconducting state. The kink energy scale defines a cutoff below which well-defined quasiparticle excitations occur. This effect is likely due to coupling to a bosonic excitation, with the most plausib…
Superconductivity studied by solving ab initio low-energy effective Hamiltonians for carrier doped CaCuO$_2$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_6$, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$, and HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$
A magnetic field applied to type-II superconductors introduces quantized vortices that locally quench superconductivity, providing a unique opportunity to investigate electronic orders that may compete with superconductivity. This is especially true in cuprate superconductors in which mutual relationships among superconductivity, pseudogap, and broken-spatial-symmetry states have attracted much attention. Here we observe energy and momentum dependent bipartite electronic superstructures in the vortex core of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscop…
We report atomic scale characterization of the pseudogap state in a high-T$_c$ superconductor, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The electronic states at low energies within the pseudogap exhibit spatial modulations having an energy-independent incommensurate periodicity. These patterns, which are oriented along the copper-oxygen bond directions, appear to be a consequence of an electronic ordering phenomenon--the observation of which correlates with the pseudogap in the density of electronic states. Our results provide a stringent test for various ordering scenarios in the cuprates, which have b…
We report a fine tuned doping study of strongly overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals using electronic Raman scattering. Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the doping, at which the normal state pseudogap closes, coincides with a Lifshitz quantum phase transition where the active hole-like Fermi surface becomes electron-like. This conclusion suggests that the microscopic cause of the pseudogap is sensitive to the Fermi surface topology. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting transition temperature is unaffected by this transition, demonstrating that th…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on the high temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ have reported an enhanced spectral gap in the neighborhood of O dopant atoms. We calculate, within density functional theory (DFT), the change in electronic structure due to such a dopant. We then construct and discuss the validity of several tight binding (TB) fits to the DFT bands with and without an O dopant. With the doping-modulated TB parameters, we finally evaluate the spin susceptibility and pairing interaction within spin fluctuation theory. The d-wave pairing eigenvalues …
Low magnetic field scanning tunneling spectroscopy of individual Abrikosov vortices in heavily overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ unveils a clear d-wave electronic structure of the vortex core, with a zero-bias conductance peak at the vortex center that splits with increasing distance from the core. We show that previously reported unconventional electronic structures, including the low energy checkerboard charge order in the vortex halo and the absence of a zero-bias conductance peak at the vortex center, are direct consequences of short inter-vortex distance and consequent vortex-vortex…
We investigate the high-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Broad, dispersive magnetic excitations are observed, with a zone boundary energy of $\sim$300 meV and a weak dependence on doping. These excitations are strikingly similar to the bosons proposed to explain the high-energy `kink' observed in photoemission. A calculation of the spin-response based on the ARPES-derived electronic structure and YRZ-quasi-particles reproduces the key features of t…
In this paper we summarize our STM studies of the density of electronic states in nearly optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ in zero field. We report on the inhomogeneity of the gap structure, density of states modulations with four-lattice constant period, and coherence peak modulation.
Both electronic Raman scattering (ERS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) revealed two energy scales for the gap in different momentum spaces in the cuprates. However, the interpretations were different, and the gap values were also different in two experiments. In order to clarify the origin of these discrepancies, we directly compared ERS and ARPES by calculating ERS from the experimental data of ARPES through the Kubo formula. The calculated ERS spectra were in good agreement with the experimental results except for the B$_{1g}$ peak energies. The doping-dependent B$_{2g}$ pea…
A major remaining challenge in the superconducting cuprates is the unambiguous differentiation of the composition and electronic structure of the CuO$_2$ layers and those of the intermediate layers. The large c axis for these materials permits employing soft x-ray (930.3 eV) standing wave (SW) excitation in photoemission that yields atomic layer-by-atomic layer depth resolution of these properties. Applying SW photoemission to Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ yields the depth distribution of atomic composition and the layer-resolved densities of states. We detect significant Ca presence in the Sr…
Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-$T_c$ cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the "weak" pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the "strong" pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical …
We have found a quantitative connection between the evolution of the inhomogeneous nanoscale electronic gaps (INSEG) state detected in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and the two universal, the upper and the lower, pseudogaps in high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTCS). When the doping and temperature dependent INSEG map were analyzed by using our proposed hole-scale, we find that the two pseudogaps are connected to two specific coverages of the CuO$_2$ plane by INSEG: the 50\% and 100\% coverages of the CuO$_2$ planes by INSEG corresp…
We present detailed first-principles calculations for the normal state electronic properties of the high T$_C$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$, by means of the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). As a first step, the body centered tetragonal (BCT) cell has been adopted, and optimized regarding its volume, $c/a$ ratio and internal atomic positions by total energy and force minimizations. The full optimization of the BCT cell leads to small but visible changes in the topology of the Fermi surface, rounding the shape of C…
Establishing the presence and the nature of a quantum critical point in their phase diagram is a central enigma of the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It could explain their pseudogap and strange metal phases, and ultimately their high superconducting temperatures. Yet, while solid evidences exist in several unconventional superconductors of ubiquitous critical fluctuations associated to a quantum critical point, in the cuprates they remain undetected until now. Here using symmetry-resolved electronic Raman scattering in the cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, we report the obser…
The discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite-layer NdNiO$_2$ -- a transition metal (TM) oxide that is both isostructural and isoelectronic to cuprate superconductors -- has lead to renewed enthusiasm in the hope of understanding the origin of unconventional superconductivity. Here, we investigate the electron-removal states in infinite-layered Ni$^{1+}$ oxide, NdNiO$_2$, which mimics hole-doping, with the state-of-the-art many-body multireference quantum chemistry methods. From the analysis of the many-body wavefunction, we find that the hole-doped $d^8$ ground state of NdNiO$_2$ …
High-quality Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals have been successfully grown by the traveling solvent floating zone technique with a wide range of Pb substitution ($x=0-0.8$). The samples are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and measured by high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with different photon energies. A systematic evolution of the electronic structure and superstructure with Pb substitution has been revealed for the first time. The superstructure shows a significant change with Pb substitutio…
A well-known peak-dip-hump structure exists near $(π, 0)$ in superconducting state ARPES spectra of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). Here we report results on optimal and overdoped Bi2212 samples indicating the traditional peak-dip-hump structure observed near $(π,0)$ is largely due to bilayer splitting. However a separate, much weaker peak-dip hump (PDH) structure distinct from bilayer splitting can be detected near $(π, 0)$. This new PDH structure is consistent with electronic coupling to the magnetic resonance mode in Bi2212. Both the dispersion and line shape signatures indicate str…
The Fermi surface (FS) of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) predicted by band theory displays Bi-related pockets around the $(π,0)$ point, which have never been observed experimentally. We show that when the effects of hole doping either by substituting Pb for Bi or by adding excess O in Bi2212 are included, the Bi-O bands are lifted above the Fermi energy ($E_F$) and the resulting first-principles FS is in remarkable accord with measurements. With decreasing hole-doping the Bi-O bands drop below $E_F$ and the system self-dopes below a critical hole concentration. Computations on other Bi…
We report systematic, high-precision measurements of the low-T (down to 70 mK) thermal conductivity κof YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}. Careful examinations of the Zn- and hole-doping dependences of the residual thermal conductivity κ_{0}/T, as well as the in-plane anisotropy of κ_{0}/T in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}, indicate a breakdown of the universal thermal conductivity, a notable theoretical prediction for d-wave superconductors. Our results point to an important role of electronic inhomogeneities, that are not considered in the standard pertur…
Electronic structures of superconducting Re24Nb5 and Re24Ti5 have been calculated employing the full-potential local-orbital method within the density functional theory. The investigations were focused on the influence of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling on band structures and Fermi surfaces of these non-centrosymmetric systems. The predicted here density of states at the Fermi level for Re24Ti5 is abnormally low with respect to that deduced from previous heat capacity measurements. This discrepancy suggests an intermediate coupled superconducting state in Re24Ti5. The differences between…
We present a systematic study for understanding the relation between electronic correlation and superconductivity in C60 and aromatic compounds. We derived, from first principles, extended Hubbard models for twelve compounds; fcc K3C60, Rb3C60, Cs3C60 (with three different lattice constants), A15 Cs3C60 (with four different lattice constants), doped solid picene, coronene, and phenanthrene. We show that these compounds are strongly correlated and have a similar energy scale of the bandwidth and interaction parameters. However, they have a different trend in the relation between the strength of…
Single atom manipulation within doped correlated electron systems would be highly beneficial to disentangle the influence of dopants, structural defects and crystallographic characteristics on their local electronic states. Unfortunately, their high diffusion barrier prevents conventional manipulation techniques. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to reversibly manipulate select sites in the optimally doped high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$ using the local electric field of the tip. We show that upon shifting individual Bi atoms at the surface, the spectral …
Using resonant X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we study charge correlations and lattice dynamics in two model cuprates, HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and HgBa$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{6+δ}$. We observe a maximum of the characteristic charge order temperature around the same hole concentration ($p \approx 0.09$) in both compounds, and concomitant pronounced anomalies in the lattice dynamics that involve the motion of atoms in and/or adjacent to the CuO$_2$ layers. These anomalies are already present at room temperature, and therefore precede the formation of the static charge correlations, and we a…
The real part of the optical in-plane conductivity of p-- and n--type cuprates thin films at various doping levels was deduced from highly accurate reflectivity measurements. We present here a comprehensive set of optical spectral weight data as a function of the temperature $T (> T_c$), for underdoped and overdoped samples. The temperature dependence of the spectral weight is not universal. Using various cut-off frequencies for the spectral weight, we show that n--type Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and p--type Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ exhibit both similarities and striking differences. The Fer…
The local electronic structures of La2CuO4, three members of the Yttrium-family (YBa2Cu3O6, YBa2Cu3O7, and YBa2Cu4O8), and to some extent of Nd2CuO4 have been determined using all-electron ab-initio cluster calculations for clusters comprising up to thirteen planar copper atoms associated with their nearest planar and apical oxygen atoms. Spin-polarized calculations in the framework of density functional theory have enabled an estimation of the superexchange couplings J. Electric field gradients at the planar copper sites are determined and their dependence on the occupation of the various ato…
We performed all-electron ab initio self-consistent field Hartree-Fock linear combination of atomic orbital, in which electronic correlation using density functional were included to perform electronic calculations in MgB2 new superconductor. Superconductivity in this compound was correlated with existence of Px,y band holes at Gamma point.
X-ray scattering measurements on optimally-doped single crystal samples of the high temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ reveal the presence of three distinct incommensurate charge modulations, each involving a roughly fivefold increase in the unit cell dimension along the {\bf b}-direction. The strongest scattering comes from the well known (H, K$\pm$ 0.21, L) modulation and its harmonics. However, we also observe broad diffraction which peak up at the L values complementary to those which characterize the known modulated structure. These diffraction features correspond to…
In the high-temperature ($T_{c}$) cuprate superconductors, increasing evidence suggests that the pseudogap, existing below the pseudogap temperature $T$*, has a distinct broken electronic symmetry from that of superconductivity. Particularly, recent scattering experiments on the underdoped cuprates have suggested that a charge ordering competes with superconductivity. However, no direct link of this physics and the important low-energy excitations has been identified. Here we report an antagonistic singularity at $T_{c}$ in the spectral weight of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ as a compel…
Using ab-initio calculations, we study the electronic structure of gallium-doped germanium, which was found recently to be a superconductor, with a critical temperature of 0.5 Kelvins, and a particularly low density of Cooper pairs. The calculations of the electronic properties reveal that no sign of an impurity band is observed, and that the Fermi level lies in the valence band of Germanium. Moreover, the calculation of the phonon frequencies shows that a new mode associated to the Ga atom is appearing, around 175$ cm-1.
The interplay between superconductivity and charge density waves (CDWs) under hole doping in cuprates is one of the central phenomena in condensed matter physics. Recently, CDWs are also observed in CaCuO$_2$-analogous nickelates RNiO$_2$ (R = La, Nd) but exhibit fundamentally different hole-doping-dependent behaviors compared to that in cuprates, raising a challenging question on its origin. In this article, we propose that electronic instability (EI) and moment-dependent electron-phonon coupling (MEPC), mainly contributed by Ni 3dx2-y2 and R 5dz2, respectively, may be the possible reasons fo…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to the error in figure 2, we did not optimized c-value of the supercell, so the results can not give the true physics of this material.
We present an ab initio $GW$ self-energy calculation of the electronic structure of LaNiO$_2$. With respect to density-functional theory we find that in $GW$ the La 4$f$ states undergo an important $+$2 eV upward shift from the Fermi level, while the O 2$p$ states are pulled down by $-$1.5 eV, thus reinforcing the charge-transfer character of this material. However, $GW$ many-body effects leave the $d$-like bands at the Fermi level almost unaffected, so that the Fermi-surface topology is preserved, unlike in cuprates.
The geometrical and electronic structure of tripotassium doped phenanthrene, \ce{K3C14H10}, have been studied by first-principles density functional theory. The main effect of potassium doping is to inject charge in the narrow phenanthrene conduction band, rendering the system metallic. The Fermi surface for the experimental X-rays unit cell is composed of two sheets with marked one and two dimensional character respectively.
The structural, elastic, and electronic properties of the very recently discovered ternary silicide superconductor, Li2IrSi3, have been calculated using ab-initio technique. We have carried out the plane-wave pseudopotential approach within the framework of the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) implemented within the CASTEP code. The calculated structural parameters show a reasonable agreement with the experimental results. Elastic moduli of this interesting material have been calculated for the first time. The electronic band structure and electronic energy density of states in…
We show, by means of ab-initio calculations, that electron-electron correlations play an important role in potassium-doped picene ($K_x$-picene), recently characterized as a superconductor with $T_c = 18K$. The inclusion of exchange interactions by means of hybrid functionals reproduces the correct gap for the undoped compound and predicts an antiferromagnetic state for $x=3$, where superconductivity has been observed. The latter finding is compatible with a sizable value of the correlation strength, in agreement with simple estimates. Our results highlight the similarity between potassium-dop…
Using projector augmented wave approach within the generalized gradient approximation, we have studied the structural property and electronic structure of ZrB12. The calculated lattice constants and bulk modulus are in good agreement with the available experimental values. A detailed study of the electronic structure and the charge-density redistribution reveals the features of strong covalent B-B and weak covalent Zr-B bondings in ZrB12. The states at the Fermi level mainly come from the $σ$-$p_{y}$ and $π$-$p_{z}$ orbitals of boron atoms, which are slightly hybridized with the $t_{2g}$-$d_{x…
The elastic, thermodynamic, electronic, and optical properties of recently discovered and potentially technologically important transition metal boride NbRuB, have been investigated using the density functional formalism. Both generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local density approximation (LDA) were used for geometrical optimization and for estimation of various elastic moduli and constants. The optical properties of NbRuB have been studied for the first time with different photon polarizations. The frequency (energy) dependences of various optical constants compliment quite well to …
The electronic structure of heavily overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The long-sought bilayer band splitting in this two-plane system is observed in both normal and superconducting states, which qualitatively agrees with the bilayer Hubbard model calculations. The maximum bilayer energy splitting is about 88 meV for the normal state feature, while it is only about 20 meV for the superconducting peak. This anomalous behavior cannot be reconciled with the quasiparticle picture.
