We transferred the frequency of an ultra-stable laser over 86 km of urban fiber. The link is composed of two cascaded 43-km fibers connecting two laboratories, LNE-SYRTE and LPL in Paris area. In an effort to realistically demonstrate a link of 172 km without using spooled fiber extensions, we implemented a recirculation loop to double the length of the urban fiber link. The link is fed with a 1542-nm cavity stabilized fiber laser having a sub-Hz linewidth. The fiber-induced phase noise is measured and cancelled with an all fiber-based interferometer using commercial off the shelf pigtailed telecommunication components. The compensated link shows an Allan deviation of a few 10-16 at one second and a few 10-19 at 10,000 seconds.
We report long-term laser frequency stabilization using only the target laser and a pair of 5 m fiber interferometers, one as a frequency reference and the second as a sensitive thermometer to stabilize the frequency reference. When used to stabilize a distributed feedback laser at 795 nm, the frequency Allan deviation at 1000 s drops from 5.6*10^{-8} to 6.9*10^{-10}. The performance equals that of an offset lock employing a second, atom-stabilized laser in the temperature control.
The frequency stability of lasers is limited by thermal noise in state-of-the-art frequency references. Further improvement requires operation at cryogenic temperature. In this context, we investigate a fiber-based ring resonator. Our system exhibits a first-order temperature-insensitive point around $3.55$ K, much lower than that of crystalline silicon. The observed low sensitivity with respect to vibrations ($<5\cdot{10^{-11}}\,\text{m}^{-1} \text{s}^{2}$), temperature ($-22(1)\cdot{10^{-9}}\,\text{K}^{-2}$) and pressure changes ($4.2(2)\cdot{10^{-11}}\,\text{mbar}^{-2}$) makes our approach …
Using fiber network as a huge sensing system will enrich monitoring methods of public infrastructures and geological disasters. With traditional cross-correlation method, laser interferometer has been used to detect and localize the vibration event. However, the random error induced by cross-correlation method limits the localization accuracy, and makes it not suitable for ultrahigh precision localizing applications. We propose a novel time shifting deviation (TSDEV) method, which has advantages over cross-correlation method in practicability and localization accuracy. Three experiments are ca…
Optical fibers have been recognized as one of the most promising host material for high phase coherence optical frequency transfer over thousands of kilometers. In the pioneering work, the active phase noise cancellation (ANC) technique has been widely used for suppressing the fiber phase noise introduced by the environmental perturbations, in which an ideal phase detector with high resolution and unlimited detection range is needed to extract the fiber phase noise, in particular for noisy fiber links. We demonstrate the passive phase noise cancellation (PNC) technique without the need of phas…
Optical frequency transfer provides the means for high-fidelity frequency transfer across thousands of kilometers. A critical step in the further developing optical frequency transfer is its capability to transfer a high spectral purity feature from ultrastable lasers or optical clocks to any remote locations and, at the same time, its adaptability to incorporate the optical frequency transfer technique into any existing communication networks with different topologies. Here we for the first time report a technique that delivers optical-frequency signals to multiple independent remote hubs alo…
We demonstrate a remote microwave/radio-frequency (RF) transfer technique based on the stabilization of a fiber link using a fiber-loop optical-microwave phase detector (FLOM-PD). This method compensates for the excess phase fluctuations introduced in fiber transfer by direct phase comparison between the optical pulse train reflected from the remote site and the local microwave/RF signal using the FLOM-PD. This enables sub-fs resolution and long-term stable link stabilization while having wide timing detection range and less demand in fiber dispersion compensation. The demonstrated relative fr…
Few-cycle pulsed laser technology highlights the need for control and stabilization of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) for applications requiring shot-to-shot timing and phase consistency. This general requirement has been achieved successfully in a number of free space and fiber lasers via feedback and feed-forward methods. Expanding upon existing results, we demonstrate CEP stabilization through the feed-forward method applied to a SESAM mode-locked Er:Yb:glass laser at 1.55 um with a measured ultralow timing jitter of 2.9 as (1 Hz - 3 MHz) and long-term stabilization over a duration of eig…
We report the frequency stabilization of an erbium-doped fiber distributed-feedback laser using an all-fiber based Michelson interferometer of large arm imbalance. The interferometer uses a 1 km SMF-28 optical fiber spool and an acousto optic modulator allowing heterodyne detection. The frequency noise power spectral density is reduced by more than 40 dB for Fourier frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 10 kHz, corresponding to a level well below 1 Hz^2/Hz over the whole range. It reaches 10^{-2} Hz^2/Hz at 1 kHz. Between 40 Hz and 30 kHz, the frequency noise is shown to be comparable to the one ob…
We present the characterization of a laser frequency stabilization scheme using a state-of-the-art wavelength meter based on solid Fizeau interferometers. For a frequency-doubled Ti-sapphire laser operated at 461 nm, an absolute Allan deviation below $10^{-9}$ with a standard deviation of $1$ MHz over 10\,h is achieved. Using this laser for cooling and trapping of strontium atoms, the wavemeter scheme provides excellent stability in single-channel operation. Multi-channel operation with a multimode fiber switch results in fluctuations of the atomic fluorescence correlated to residual frequency…
We investigate optical frequency dissemination over a 1400 km long fiber link in looped configuration over a pair of underground fibers between Braunschweig and Strasbourg. This fiber link is the first to combine fiber Brillouin amplifiers with a repeater laser station. Phase-coherent operation over more than five days is demonstrated. We analyze the repeatability of the performance over four campaigns and present results of 65 days in total. The weighted mean of the fractional frequency offset of the transferred optical frequency over the complete data set is $(-1.1 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-20}$.…
We present an hybrid fiber link combining effective optical frequency transfer and evaluation of performances with a self-synchronized two-way comparison. It enables us to detect the round-trip fiber noise and each of the forward and backward one-way fiber noises simultaneously. The various signals acquired with this setup allow us to study quantitatively several properties of optical fiber links. We check the reciprocity of the accumulated noise forth and back over a bi-directional fiber to the level of $3.1(\pm 3.9)\times 10^{-20}$ based on a 160000s continuous data. We also analyze the nois…
We demonstrate two fully and tightly phase locked 750 MHz ytterbium (Yb) fiber frequency combs that are independently stabilized to a continuous wave (CW) laser with <1 rad RMS phase error. A bulk EOM and a single stack PZT are separately utilized as the fast actuators for cavity length stabilization. The carrier envelop frequencies are phase locked by single loop feedback to laser diode current, showing 1.6 MHz servo bumps. The in-loop fractional frequency instabilities are ~1.5e-18 at 1s for both combs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest repetition rate in fiber based low phas…
We present a technique for coherence transfer of laser light through a branching fiber link, where the optical phase noise induced by environmental perturbations via the fiber link is passively compensated by remote users without the requirements of any active servo components. At each remote site, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is simultaneously taken as a frequency distinguisher for distinguishing its unique frequency from other sites' and as an optical actuator for compensating the phase noise coming from the optical fiber. With this configuration, we incorporate a long outside loop path …
We demonstrate fast characterization (~1.4 microseconds) of both the dispersion and dispersion slope of long optical fiber links (~25 km) using dual quadrature spectral interferometry with an optical frequency comb. Compared to previous spectral interferometry experiments limited to fiber lengths of meters, the long coherence length and the periodic delay properties of frequency combs, coupled with fast data acquisition, enable spectral interferometric characterization of fibers longer by several orders of magnitude. We expect that our method will be useful to recently proposed lightwave techn…
In this paper, we propose a real-time free-running time scale based on four remote hydrogen masers. The clocks in the ensemble were scattered around Beijing, connected by urban fiber links using a novel frequency synchronization system. The remote clock ensemble prevents the time scale from potential problems caused by correlation among co-located clocks. Insofar as it is real-time, it fulfills the requirements for applications such as navigation, telecommunications and so on. The free-running time scale is updated every 1200 s, and a disturbance-resistant algorithm makes it robust to fiber li…
Demand for low-noise, continuous-wave, frequency-tunable lasers based on semiconductor integrated photonics has been advancing in support of numerous applications. In particular, an important goal is to achieve narrow spectral linewidth, commensurate with bulk-optic or fiber-optic laser platforms. Here, we report on laser-frequency-stabilization experiments with a heterogeneously integrated III/V-Si widely tunable laser and a high-finesse, thermal-noise-limited photonic resonator. This hybrid architecture offers a chip-scale optical-frequency reference with an integrated linewidth of 60 Hz and…
We report on the characterization of a commercial-core fiber-based frequency comb equipped with an intracavity electro-optic modulator (EOM). We investigate the relationship between the noise of the pump diode and the laser relative intensity noise (RIN) and demonstrate the use of a low noise current supply to substantially reduce the laser RIN. By measuring several transfer functions, we evaluate the potentiality of the EOM for comb repetition rate stabilization. We also evaluate the coupling to other relevant parameters of the comb. From these measureemnts, we infer the capabilities of the f…
Self-heterodyne fiber interferometers have been shown to be capable of stabilizing lasers to ultra-narrow linewidths and present an excellent alternative to high finesse cavities for frequency stabilization. In addition to suppressing frequency noise, these devices are highly tunable, and can be manipulated to produce high speed frequency sweeps over the entire range of the laser. We present an analytic approach for choosing a delay-line length for both optimal noise suppression and highest in-loop frequency sweep rate. Using this model we have implemented a fiber-based active Michelson interf…
Progress made in optical references, including ultra-stable Fabry-Perot cavities, optical frequency combs and optical atomic clocks, have driven the need for ultra-stable optical fiber networks. Telecom-wavelength ultra-pure optical signal transport has been demonstrated on distances ranging from the laboratory scale to the continental scale. In this manuscript, we present a Doppler-cancellation setup based on a digital phase-locked loop for ultra-stable optical signal dissemination over fiber. The optical phase stabilization setup is based on a usual heterodyne Michelson-interferometer setup,…
Single-Element Dual-Interferometer for Precision Inertial Sensing: Sub-picometer Structural Stability and Performance as a Reference for Laser Frequency Stabilization
We present an ultrahigh-$Q$, solid-silica microrod resonator operated under ambient conditions that supports laser-fractional-frequency stabilization to the thermal-noise limit of $3 \times 10^{-13}$ and a linewidth of 62 Hz. We characterize the technical-noise mechanisms for laser stabilization, which contribute significantly less than thermal noise. With fiber photonics, we generate optical and microwave reference signals provided by the microrod modes and the free-spectral range, respectively. Our results suggest the future physical considerations for a miniature, low noise, and robust opti…
The future space-based gravitational wave detector Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) requires bidirectional exchange of light between its two optical benches on board of each of its three satellites. The current baseline foresees a polarization-maintaining single-mode fiber for this backlink connection. Phase changes which are common in both directions do not enter the science measurement, but differential ("non-reciprocal") phase fluctuations directly do and must thus be guaranteed to be small enough. We have built a setup consisting of a Zerodur$^{\rm TM}$ baseplate with fused silica…
We report what we believe to be the lowest phase noise optical-to-microwave frequency division using fiber-based femtosecond optical frequency combs: a residual phase noise of -120dBc/Hz at 1 Hz offset from a 11.55GHz carrier frequency. We furthermore report a detailed investigation into the fundamental noise sources which afflicts the division process itself. Two frequency combs with quasi-identical configurations are referenced to a common ultrastable cavity laser source. To identify each of the limiting effects we implement an ultra-low noise carrier-suppression measurement system, which ci…
Frequency dissemination in phase-stabilized optical fiber networks for metrological frequency comparisons and precision measurements are promising candidates to overcome the limitations imposed by satellite techniques. However, network constraints restrict the availability of dedicated channels in the commonly-used C-band. Here, we demonstrate the dissemination of an SI-traceable ultrastable optical frequency in the L-band over a 456 km fiber network with ring topology, in which telecommunication data traffic occupies the full C-band. We characterize the optical phase noise and evaluate a link…
