The frequency stability of lasers is limited by thermal noise in state-of-the-art frequency references. Further improvement requires operation at cryogenic temperature. In this context, we investigate a fiber-based ring resonator. Our system exhibits a first-order temperature-insensitive point around $3.55$ K, much lower than that of crystalline silicon. The observed low sensitivity with respect to vibrations ($<5\cdot{10^{-11}}\,\text{m}^{-1} \text{s}^{2}$), temperature ($-22(1)\cdot{10^{-9}}\,\text{K}^{-2}$) and pressure changes ($4.2(2)\cdot{10^{-11}}\,\text{mbar}^{-2}$) makes our approach promising for future precision experiments.
Here, we study the paramagnetic ions behavior in presence of a strong microwave electromagnetic field sustained inside a cryogenic sapphire whispering gallery mode resonator. The high frequency measurement resolution that can be now achieved by comparing two CSOs permit for the first time to observe clearly the non-linearity of the resonator power sensitivity. These observations that in turn allow us to optimize the CSO operation, are well explained by the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) saturation of the paramagnetic impurities contained in the sapphire crystal.
We cooled ultrathin tapered fibers to cryogenic temperatures and controllably coupled them with high-Q microsphere resonators at a wavelength close to the optical transition of diamond nitrogen vacancy centers. The 310-nm-diameter tapered fibers were stably nanopositioned close to the microspheres with a positioning stability of approximately 10 nm over a temperature range of 7-28 K. A cavity-induced phase shift was observed in this temperature range, demonstrating a discrete transition from undercoupling to overcoupling.
We present the design and first measurement results for an ultra-stable cryogenically cooled optical sapphire resonator system with a potential relative frequency stability better than 3x10^-17. This level of oscillator stability allows for more precise tests of Einstein's theories of relativity and thus could help to find first hints of "new physics". We will give some details on a projected experiment to test Lorentz invariance that will utilize these cavities.
We report on the demonstration and characterization of a silicon optical resonator for laser frequency stabilization, operating in the deep cryogenic regime at temperatures as low as 1.5 K. Robust operation was achieved, with absolute frequency drift less than 20 Hz over 1 hour. This stability allowed sensitive measurements of the resonator thermal expansion coefficient ($α$). We found $α=4.6\times10^{-13}$ ${\rm K^{-1}}$ at 1.6 K. At 16.8 K $α$ vanishes, with a derivative equal to $-6\times10^{-10}$ ${\rm K}^{-2}$. The temperature of the resonator was stabilized to a level below 10 $μ$K for a…
Temperature measurement with nano-Kelvin resolution is demonstrated at room temperature, based on the thermal dependence of an optical crystal anisotropy in a high quality whispering gallery resonator. As the resonator's TE and TM modes frequencies have different temperature coefficients, their differential shift provides a sensitive measurement of the temperature variation, which is used for active stabilization of the temperature.
A system providing an optical frequency with an instability comparable to that of a hydrogen maser is presented. It consists of a $5$ $\mathrm{cm}$ long, vertically oriented silicon optical resonator operated at temperatures between $1.5$ $\mathrm{K}$ and $3.6$ $\mathrm{K}$ in a closed-cycle cryostat with low-temperature Joule-Thomson stage. We show that with a standard cryostat, a simple cryogenic optomechanical setup, no active or passive vibration isolation, a minimum frequency instability of $2.5\times10^{-15}$ at $τ=1500$ $\mathrm{s}$ integration time can be reached. The influence of puls…
We report intracavity Bragg scattering induced by photorefractive (PR) effect in high-Q lithium niobate (LN) ring resonators at cryogenic temperatures. We show that, when a cavity mode is strongly excited, the PR effect imprints a long-lived periodic space-charge field. This residual field in turn creates a refractive index modulation pattern that dramatically enhances the back scattering of an incoming probe light, and results in selective and reconfigurable mode splittings. This PR-induced Bragg scattering effect, despite being undesired for many applications, could be utilized to enable opt…
A system for studying microcavity resonators at cryogenic temperatures (~10 K) through evanescent coupling via optical fiber taper waveguides is reported, and efficient fiber coupling to AlGaAs microdisk cavities with embedded quantum dots is demonstrated. As an immediate application of this tool, we study high-resolution tuning of microdisk cavities through nitrogen gas adsorption, as first discussed by Mosor, et al. By proper regulation of the nitrogen gas flow and delivery of the gas to the sample surface, continuous tuning can be achieved with modest gas flows, and overall wavelength shift…
The stability and outstanding coherence of dopants and other atom-like defects in tailored host crystals make them a leading platform for the implementation of distributed quantum information processing and sensing in quantum networks. Albeit the required efficient light-matter coupling can be achieved via the integration into nanoscale resonators, in this approach the proximity of interfaces is detrimental to the coherence of even the least-sensitive emitters. Here, we establish an alternative: By integrating a 19 micrometer thin erbium-doped crystal into a cryogenic Fabry-Perot resonator wit…
Long-lived, high-frequency phonons are valuable for applications ranging from optomechanics to emerging quantum systems. For scientific as well as technological impact, we seek high-performance oscillators that offer a path towards chip-scale integration. Confocal bulk acoustic wave resonators have demonstrated an immense potential to support long-lived phonon modes in crystalline media at cryogenic temperatures. So far, these devices have been macroscopic with cm-scale dimensions. However, as we push these oscillators to high frequencies, we have an opportunity to radically reduce the footpri…
The thermal stability of monolithic optical microresonators is essential for many mesoscopic photonic applications such as ultrastable laser oscillators, photonic microwave clocks, and precision navigation and sensing. Their fundamental performance is largely bounded by thermal instability. Sensitive thermal monitoring can be achieved by utilizing cross-polarized dual-mode beat frequency metrology, determined by the polarization-dependent thermorefractivity of a single-crystal microresonator, wherein the heterodyne radio-frequency beat pins down the optical mode volume temperature for precisio…
Suspended high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonators (HBARs) can serve as a viable optomechanical platform for efficient transduction of signals from the microwave to the optical frequency domain. In contrast to 1D nanobeam optomechanical crystals, HBARs benefit from very high RF to phonon injection efficiency ($η_{PIE}\approx$1) and low optical pump induced heating at cryogenic temperatures. By building small mode volume optical cavities around these devices, one can in principle achieve optomechanical cooperativities comparable to 1D nanobeam optomechanical crystals. In this work, we demons…
We have stabilized an external cavity diode laser to a whispering gallery mode resonator formed by a protrusion of a single-crystal magnesiumdifluoride cylinder. The cylinder's compact dimensions (<1 cm^3) reduce the sensitivity to vibrations and simplify the stabilization of its temperature in a compact setup. In a comparison to an ultrastable laser used for precision metrology we determine a minimum Allan deviation of 20 Hz, corresponding to a relative Allan deviation of 6*10^-14, at an integration time of 100 ms. This level of instability is compatible with the limits imposed by fundamental…
State-of-the-art optical oscillators employing cryogenic reference cavities are limited in performance by the Brownian thermal noise associated with the mechanical dissipation of the mirror coatings. Recently, crystalline Al$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$As/GaAs coatings have emerged as a promising candidate for improved coating thermal noise. We present measurements of the frequency noise of two fully crystalline cryogenic reference cavities with Al$_{0.92}$Ga$_{0.08}$As/GaAs optical coatings. We report on previously unmeasured birefringent noise associated with anti-correlated frequency fluctuations betwee…
Properties of calcium fluoride (CaF2) have been well researched at UV, visible and IR range of frequencies, but not at ultra high frequencies. In this work we report the loss tangent and the real part of relative permittivity of CaF2, measured in the temperatures range of 15 - 81 K and the frequency of 29.25 GHz. The loss tangent and the real part of relative permittivity were determined by measurements of the resonant frequency and the Qo - factor of a TE011 mode cylindrical copper cavity with superconducting plates containing the sample under test. The measured real part of relative permitti…
We developed an apparatus to couple a 50-micrometer diameter whispering-gallery silica microtoroidal resonator in a helium-4 cryostat using a straight optical tapered-fiber at 1550nm wavelength. On a top-loading probe specifically adapted for increased mechanical stability, we use a specifically-developed "cryotaper" to optically probe the cavity, allowing thus to record the calibrated mechanical spectrum of the optomechanical system at low temperatures. We then demonstrate excellent thermalization of a 63-MHz mechanical mode of a toroidal resonator down to the cryostat's base temperature of 1…
Ultrastable high-spectral-purity lasers have served as the cornerstone behind optical atomic clocks, quantum measurements, precision optical-microwave generation, high resolution optical spectroscopy and sensing. Hertz-level lasers stabilized to high finesse Fabry-Pérot mirror cavities are typically used for these studies but are large and fragile such that they have remained laboratory instruments. There is a clear demand in rugged miniaturized lasers operating potentially at comparable stabilities to those bulk lasers. Over the past decade, ultrahigh-Q optical whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) r…
We demonstrate that n-doped resistive heaters in silicon waveguides show photoconductive effects with high responsivities. These photoconductive heaters, integrated into microring resonator (MRR)-based filters, were used to automatically tune and stabilize the filter's resonance wavelength to the input laser's wavelength. This is achieved without requiring dedicated defect implantations, additional material depositions, dedicated photodetectors, or optical power tap-outs. Automatic wavelength stabilization of first-order MRR and second-order series-coupled MRR filters is experimentally demonst…
Laser cooling of mechanical degrees of freedom is one of the most significant achievements in the field of opto-mechanics. Here, we report, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, efficient passive optomechanical cooling of the motion of a freestanding waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonator. The waveguide is an 8 mm long glass-fiber nanospike, which has a fundamental flexural resonance at Ω/2π = 2.5 kHz and a Q-factor of 1.2 10**5. Upon launching 250 μW laser power at an optical frequency close to the WGM resonant frequency, we observed cooling of the nanospike…

Optical frequency stabilization is a critical component for precision scientific systems including quantum sensing, precision metrology, and atomic timekeeping. Ultra-high quality factor photonic integrated optical resonators are a prime candidate for reducing their size, weight and cost as well as moving these systems on chip. However, integrated resonators suffer from temperature-dependent resonance drift due to the large thermal response as well as sensitivity to external environmental perturbations. Suppression of the cavity resonance drift can be achieved using precision interrogation of …
A test of Lorentz invariance for electromagnetic waves was performed by comparing the resonance frequencies of two stable optical resonators as a function of orientation in space. The crystalline resonators were operated at 3.4 K in a cryostat employing a pulse-tube refrigerator. A new analysis yields the Robertson-Mansouri-Sexl theory parameter combination $β-δ-1/2=(-0.6\pm 2.1\pm1.2)\cdot10^{-10}$ and one parameter of the Standard Model Extension theory, $(\tildeκ_{e-})^{ZZ} = (-2.9\pm2.2)\cdot 10^{-14}$.
Microresonator based optical frequency combs (MFC) have demonstrated promise in extending the capabilities of optical frequency combs. Here we demonstrate all optical stabilization of a low noise temporal soliton based MFC in a crystalline resonator via a new technique to control the repetition rate. This is accomplished by thermally heating the microresonator with an additional probe laser coupled to an auxiliary optical resonator mode. The offset frequency is controlled by stabilization of the pump laser frequency to a reference optical frequency comb. We analyze the stabilization by perform…
We present a cryogenic setup where an optical Fabry-Perot resonator is coupled to a single-mode optical fiber with coupling efficiency above 90% at mK temperatures without realignment during cooling down. The setup is prealigned at room temperature to compensate for the thermal contraction and change of the refractive index of the optical components during cooling down. The high coupling efficiency is achieved by keeping the setup rotation-symmetric around the optical axis. The majority of the setup components are made of Invar (FeNi36) which minimizes the thermal contraction. High coupling ef…
Dynamical backaction has proven to be a versatile tool in cavity optomechanics, allowing for precise manipulation of a mechanical resonator's motion using confined optical photons. In this work, we present measurements of a silicon whispering-gallery-mode optomechanical cavity where backaction originates from opposing radiation pressure and photothermal forces, with the former dictating the optomechanical spring effect and the latter governing the optomechanical damping. At high enough optical input powers, we show that the photothermal force drives the mechanical resonator into self-oscillati…
Demand for low-noise, continuous-wave, frequency-tunable lasers based on semiconductor integrated photonics has been advancing in support of numerous applications. In particular, an important goal is to achieve narrow spectral linewidth, commensurate with bulk-optic or fiber-optic laser platforms. Here, we report on laser-frequency-stabilization experiments with a heterogeneously integrated III/V-Si widely tunable laser and a high-finesse, thermal-noise-limited photonic resonator. This hybrid architecture offers a chip-scale optical-frequency reference with an integrated linewidth of 60 Hz and…
By direct application of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we numerically calculate the fundamental dimensional fluctuations of crystalline CaF2 whispering gallery resonators in the case of structural damping, and the limit that this noise imposes on the frequency stability of such resonators at both room and cryogenic temperatures. We analyze elasto-optic noise - the effect of Brownian dimensional fluctuation on frequency via the strain-dependence of the refractive index - a noise term that has so far not been considered for whispering-gallery resonators. We find that dimensional fluctuati…
We propose and optimize a vertically-loaded diamond microdisk resonator (VLDMoRt) coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond for efficient collection of zero-phonon-line emission into low numerical aperture ($\text{NA}$) free-space modes. The VLDMoRt achieves a Purcell enhancement of 172 with $39\%$ of the emitted light collected within a $\text{NA}$ of 0.6, leading to a total external spin-photon collection efficiency of 0.33. As the design is compatible with established nanofabrication techniques and couples to low-NA modes accessible by cryogenic free-space optical systems, it is …
Fiber Fabry-Perot cavities, formed by micro-machined mirrors on the end-facets of optical fibers, are used in an increasing number of technical and scientific applications, where they typically require precise stabilization of their optical resonances. Here, we study two different approaches to construct fiber Fabry-Perot resonators and stabilize their length for experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics with neutral atoms. A piezo-mechanically actuated cavity with feedback based on the Pound-Drever-Hall locking technique is compared to a novel rigid cavity design that makes use of the hig…
Using an ultrastable continuous-wave laser at 580 nm we performed spectral hole burning of Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ at very high spectral resolution. Essential parameters determining the usefulness as a "macroscopic" frequency reference: linewidth, temperature sensitivity, long-term stability were characterized, using a H-maser stabilized frequency comb. Spectral holes with linewidth as low as 6 kHz were observed and the upper limit of the drift of the hole frequency was determined to be on the order of 5$\pm$3 mHz/s. We discuss necessary requirements for achieving ultra-high-stability in la…
We demonstrate a cryo-compatible, fully fiber-integrated, alignment-free optical microresonator. The compatibility with low temperatures expands its possible applications to the wide field of solid-state quantum optics, where a cryogenic environment is often a requirement. At a temperature of 4.6 K we obtain a quality factor of $\mathbf{(9.9 \pm 0.7) \times 10^6}$. In conjunction with the small mode volume provided by the nanofiber, this cavity can be either used in the coherent dynamics or the fast cavity regime, where it can provide a Purcell factor of up to 15. Our resonator is therefore su…
Experiments were performed with Fabry-Perot optical resonators in vacuum at low temperatures. Mirrors were applied on substrates of various optical materials. The infrared laser with a wavelength of 1.064 microns was used. The pump power at the maximum could reach 450 mW. The evolution of the optical properties of the FP cavity was traced in the temperature range (300 - 10)K. The main parameters measured were the integral characteristics of the FP resonances: sharpness (finesse) and contrast of interference. Three types of substrates were tested: a sitall -- the optical glass with ultra low th…

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) at cryogenic temperatures enable a wide range of applications in scalable classical and quantum systems for computing and sensing. A promising application of cryogenic PICs is to provide optical interconnects by up-converting signals from electrical to optical domain, allowing massive data-transfer from 4 K superconducting (SC) electronics to room temperature environment. Such a solution is central to overcome the major bottleneck in the scalability of cryogenic systems, which currently rely on bulky copper cables that suffer from limited bandwidth, large he…
All quantum optomechanics experiments to date operate at cryogenic temperatures, imposing severe technical challenges and fundamental constraints. Here we present a novel design of on-chip mechanical resonators which exhibit fundamental modes with frequencies $f$ and mechanical quality factors $Q_\mathrm{m}$ sufficient to enter the optomechanical quantum regime at room temperature. We overcome previous limitations by designing ultrathin, high-stress silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) membranes, with tensile stress in the resonators' clamps close to the ultimate yield strength of the material. By pa…
We report on the generation of nonclassical states of light in a silicon ring resonator in a selfpumping scheme. The ring is inserted in a lasing cavity, for which it acts as a filter, so that the lasing always occurs within a selected ring resonance, without active stabilization of the resonance frequency. We show the emission of coincident photon pairs and study their correlation properties through the reconstruction of the measurements via stimulated emission.
Elastic dissipation through radiation towards the substrate is a major loss channel in micro- and nanomechanical resonators. Engineering the coupling of these resonators with optical cavities further complicates and constrains the design of low-loss optomechanical devices. In this work we rely on the coherent cancellation of mechanical radiation to demonstrate material and surface absorption limited silicon near-field optomechanical resonators oscillating at tens of MHz. The effectiveness of our dissipation suppression scheme is investigated at room and cryogenic temperatures. While at room te…
Laser stabilization sits at the heart of many precision scientific experiments and applications, including quantum information science, metrology and atomic timekeeping. These systems narrow the laser linewidth and stabilize the carrier by use of Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking to a table-scale, ultra-high quality factor (Q), vacuum spaced Fabry-Perot reference cavity. Integrating these cavities, to bring characteristics of PDH stabilization to the chip-scale, is critical to reduce their size, cost, and weight, and enable a wide range of portable and system-on-chip applications. We report a si…
