The process pp -> top anti-top bottom anti-bottom + X represents a very important background reaction to searches at the LHC, in particular to top anti-top H production where the Higgs boson decays into a bottom anti-bottom pair. A successful analysis of top anti-top H at the LHC requires the knowledge of direct top anti-top bottom anti-bottom production at NLO in QCD. We take the first step in this direction upon calculating the NLO QCD corrections to the subprocess initiated by quark anti-quark annihilation.
Theoretical uncertainties in the simulation of ttbb production represent one of the main obstacles that still hamper the observation of Higgs-boson production in association with top-quark pairs in the H->bb channel. In this letter we present a next-to-leading order (NLO) simulation of ttbb production with massive b-quarks matched to the Sherpa parton shower. This allows one to extend NLO predictions to arbitrary ttbb kinematics, including the case where one or both b-jets arise from collinear g->bb splittings. We find that this splitting mechanism plays an important role for the ttH(bb) analy…
Theoretical predictions for ttbb production are of crucial importance for ttH measurements in the H->bb channel at the LHC. To address the large uncertainties associated with the modelling of extra QCD radiation in ttbb events, in this paper we present a calculation of pp->ttbbj at NLO QCD. The behaviour of NLO corrections is analysed in a variety of observables, and to assess theoretical uncertainties we use factor-two rescalings as well as different dynamic scales. In this context, we propose a systematic alignment of dynamic scales that makes it possible to disentangle normalisation and sha…
In this contribution, we summarize the results from an NLO computation of the production of ttbb in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained by combining two programs: Helac-1Loop, based on the OPP method and the reduction code CutTools, for the virtual one-loop matrix elements and Helac-Dipoles for the real-emission contributions. Selected numerical results are presented for the LHC.
The next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to top anti-top bottom anti-bottom (tTbB) production at the LHC reveal that the scale choice adopted in previous lowest-order simulations underestimates the tTbB cross section by a factor two. We discuss a new dynamical scale that stabilizes the perturbative predictions and describe the impact of the corrections on the shape of distributions. We also account for the techniques employed to compute the six-particle one-loop amplitudes with high CPU efficiency.
In this article, we report on the computation of the NLO QCD corrections to ${\rm p}{\rm p} \to μ^-\barν_μ{\rm e}^+ν_{\rm e}\bar{\rm b}{\rm b}\bar{\rm b}{\rm b}$ at the LHC, which is an irreducible background to ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to{\rm t}\bar{\rm t}{\rm H}\bigl(\to{\rm b}\bar{\rm b}\bigr)$. This is the first time that a full NLO computation for a $2\to8$ process with 6 external strongly-interacting partons is made public. No approximations are used, and all off-shell and interference effects are taken into account. Cross sections and differential distributions from the full computation are comp…
We report on the calculation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top anti-top bottom anti-bottom (ttbb) final states at the LHC, which deliver a serious background contribution to the production of a Higgs boson (decaying into a bottom anti-bottom pair) in association with a top anti-top pair. While the corrections significantly reduce the unphysical scale dependence of the leading-order cross section, our results predict an enhancement of the ttbb production cross section by a K-factor of about 1.8.
We summarise predictions for top anti-top bottom anti-bottom (tTbB) production at the LHC in next-to-leading order QCD. The precise description of this background process is a prerequisite to observe associated top anti-top Higgs production in the H -> bottom anti-bottom decay channel. The one-loop amplitudes are computed using Feynman diagrams and numerical tensor reduction. This approach provides very high numerical stability and CPU efficiency. We find that the scale choice adopted in ATLAS simulations underestimates the tTbB background by a factor two and introduce a new dynamical scale th…
We present next-to-leading order corrections in the leading colour approximation for jet rates in electron-positron annihilation up to seven jets. The results for the two-, three-, and four-jet rates agree with known results. The NLO jet rates have been known previously only up to five jets. The results for the six- and seven-jet rate are new. The results are obtained by a new and efficient method based on subtraction and numerical integration.
Next-to-leading order calculations for heavy quark three-jet production in e+e- annihilation are reviewed. Their applications for the measurement of the b-quark mass at LEP/SLC and for the test of flavour independence of the strong coupling constant are discussed.
Studies of dark matter annihilation through an $s$-channel resonance are often based on recipes such as a narrow width approximation or real intermediate state subtraction. We review a recipe-free formalism that can be implemented at the NLO level in the full theory, and ensures the cancellation of mass singularities. Its basic ingredients can be formulated in the relativistic regime, but we show that the procedure simplifies if we go to the non-relativistic one and assume the presence of kinetic equilibrium. The latter case is illustrated for scalar singlet dark matter with $m_{\rm S}^{ } \si…
We calculate the complete one-loop quantum corrections to the helicity eigenstate chargino pair production cross sections in polarized electron positron collisions, within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We calculate the non-QED corrections using the helicity amplitudes formalism, and Dimensional Regularization to deal with ultraviolet divergences. We calculate QED corrections using the dipole subtraction formalism to extract soft and collinear divergences in Bremsstrahlung, canceling them with the infrared divergences from virtual QED corrections. We show numerical results for the …
Electron-positron annihilation into hadrons plus an energetic photon from initial state radiation allows the hadronic cross-section to be measured over a wide range of energies. The full next-to-leading order QED corrections for the cross-section for e^+ e^- annihilation into a real tagged photon and a virtual photon converting into hadrons are calculated where the tagged photon is radiated off the initial electron or positron. This includes virtual and soft photon corrections to the process e^+ e^- \to γ+γ^* and the emission of two real hard photons: e^+ e^- \to γ+ γ+ γ^*. A Monte Carlo gener…

This paper describes the MC@NLO method for matching next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD with the parton shower and hadronization model of the Monte Carlo (MC) event generator tt Herwig++, for e+e- annihilation and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. Details of the event generation method as well as spin, flavour, momentum and colour assignments are presented. We obtain predictions for various distributions which arecompared with experimental data.
Next-to-Leading-Order(NLO) QCD corrections to double J/psi production in e^+e^- annihilation at sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV are calculated. We find that they greatly decrease the cross section, with a K factor (NLO/LO) ranging from -0.31 to 0.25 depending on the renormalization scale. Although the renormalization scale dependence indicates a large uncertainty, when combined with the NLO QCD corrections to J/psi + eta_c production, it can explain why the double J/psi$ production could not be found at B factories while the J/psi + eta_c production could, despite the fact that cross section of the former is…
The leptonic tensor for the process $e^+ e^- \to γ+γ^*$, which describes the next-to-leading order virtual and soft QED corrections to initial state radiation in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation with emission of an extra virtual photon decaying into hadrons, is calculated. A Monte Carlo generator for the reaction $e^+ e^- \to γ+ π^+ π^-$ has been set up which includes these corrections. It thus describes configurations where the invariant mass of the hadrons plus photon is very close to $\sqrt{s}$. Predictions for cms energies of 1 to 10 GeV, corresponding to the energies of DAPHNE and B-meson factories…
We use an Effective Charges (ECH) method to extract Lambda-MS-bar, and hence alpha_s(M_z), from event shape moments in e+e- annihilation. We compare these results with ones obtained using standard MS-bar perturbation theory. The ECH method at NLO is found to perform better than standard MS-bar perturbation theory when applied to means of event shape observables. For example, when we apply the NLO ECH method to <1-T> we get alpha_s(M_z)=0.1193\pm0.0003. However ECH at NNLO is found to work less well than ECH at NLO, and the ECH method also fails to describe data for higher moments of event shap…
The cross section for Higgs+jet production in bottom quark annihilation is calculated through NLO QCD. The five-flavour scheme is used to derive this contribution to the Higgs+jet production cross section which becomes numerically important in the MSSM for large values of tan(beta). We present numerical results for a proton collider with 14 TeV center-of-mass energy. The NLO matrix elements for d(sigma)/d(pT) are then combined with the total inclusive cross section in order to derive the integrated cross section with a maximum cut on pT at next-to-next-to-leading order.
We present the first fully analytic calculation of the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) event shape observable Energy-Energy Correlation in electron-positron annihilation at Next-To-Leading Order (NLO). This result sheds light on the analytic structure of the event shape observables beyond Leading Order (LO) and serves as a motivation to employ our methods in the investigation of other event shape observables that so far have not been calculated analytically.
In this work we provide all the missing ingredients for calculating parity-violating 3-jet observables in e^+e^- collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) including the full quark mass dependence. In particular we give explicit results for the one-loop corrections and for the singular contributions from real emission processes. Our formulae allow for the computation of the NLO 3-jet contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry for heavy flavours, which is -- and will be -- an important observable for electroweak physics at present and future e^+e^- colliders.
Given a next-to-leading order calculation, we show how to set up a computer program, which generates a sequence of unweighted momentum configurations, each configuration containing either n or n+1 four-vectors, such that for any infrared safe observable the average over these configurations coincides with the NLO calculation up to errors of order y_res. The core of the algorithm is a method to combine real emission and virtual corrections on a point-by-point basis in hard phase space. The algorithm can be implemented on top of existing NLO calculations.
The production of four jets in electron-positron annihilation allows for measuring the strong coupling and the underlying group structure of the strong interaction simultaneously. This requires next-to-leading order perturbative prediction for four-jet observables. In this paper we describe the theoretical formalism of such a calculation with sufficient details. We use the dipole method to construct a Monte Carlo program that can be used for calculating any four-jet observable at the NLO accuracy. As new results, we present the NLO prediction for the thrust minor, y_4 and C parameter (at C > 0…
In this paper, by employing the $k_{T}$ factorization theorem, we made the first calculation for the space-like scalar pion form factor $Q^2 F(Q^2)$ at the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) level, and then found the time-like scalar pion form factor $F'^{(1)}_{\rm a,I}$ by analytic continuation from the space-like one. From the analytical evaluations and the numerical results, we found the following points: (a) the NLO correction to the space-like scalar pion form factor has an opposite sign with the LO one but is very small in magnitude, can produce at most $10\%$ decreas…
Next-to-Leading-Order(NLO) QCD corrections to J/jpsi plus eta_c production in e+e- annihilation at sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV is calculated in this paper, and an analytic result is obtained. By choosing proper physical parameters, a K factor (ratio of NLO to LO) of about 2, which is in agreement with the result in Ref.\cite{Zhang:2005ch}, is obtained. Our results show that the Next-Next-to-Leading-Order(NNLO) corrections might be quite large. The plot of the K-factor vs the center-of-mass energy sqrt{s} shows that it is more difficult to obtain a convergent result from the perturbative QCD without resum…
We thoroughly investigate both transverse momentum and threshold resummation effects on scalar-pseudoscalar pair production via quark-antiquark annihilation at the $13~ \text{TeV}$ Large Hadron Collider at QCD NLO+NLL accuracy. A factorization method is introduced to properly supplement the soft-gluon (threshold) resummation contribution from parton distribution functions to the resummed results obtained by the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation approach. We find that the impact of the threshold-resummation improved PDFs is comparable to the resummation effect of the partonic matrix element and…
We present the calculations of the complete NLO inclusive total cross sections for pair production of neutral Higgs bosons through $b\bar b$ annihilation in the minimal supersymmetric standard model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In our calculations, we used both the DREG scheme and the DRED scheme and found that the NLO total cross sections in the above two schemes are the same. Our results show that the $b\bar b$-annihilation contributions can exceed ones of $gg$ fusion and $q\bar q$ annihilation for $h^0H^0$, $A^0h^0$ and $A^0H^0$ productions when $\tanβ$ is large. In the case of $μ>0$,…
We present nonperturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) for bottom-flavored ($B$) hadrons both at next-to-leading (NLO) and, for the first time, at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ factorization scheme with five massless quark flavors. They are determined by fitting all available experimental data of inclusive single $B$-hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, from the ALEPH, DELPHI, and OPAL Collaborations at CERN LEP1 and the SLD Collaboration at SLAC SLC. The uncertainties in these FFs as well as in the corresponding observables are estimated using t…
In this review, we discuss the results on the parton-to-pion fragmentation functions obtained in a combined NLO fit to data of single-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation, proton-proton collisions, and lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering. A more complete discussion can be found in Ref. [1].
This article describes the code SusHi (for "Supersymmetric Higgs") which calculates the cross sections $pp/p\bar{p}\rightarrowϕ+X$ in gluon fusion and bottom-quark annihilation in the SM and the MSSM, where $ϕ$ is any of the neutral Higgs bosons within these models. Apart from inclusive cross sections up to NNLO QCD, differential cross sections with respect to the Higgs' transverse momentum $p_T$ and (pseudo-)rapidity $y(η)$ can be calculated through NLO QCD. In case of gluon fusion, SusHi contains NLO QCD contributions from the third family of quarks and squarks, NNLO corrections due to top-q…
We calculate the SU(2)$\times$U(1) electroweak static potential between a fermionic triplet in the broken phase of the Standard Model in the one-loop order (NLO). The one-loop correction provides the leading non-relativistic correction to the large Sommerfeld effect in the annihilation of wino or wino-like dark matter particles $χ^0$. We find sizeable modifications of the $χ^0χ^0$ annihilation cross section and determine the shifts of the resonance locations due to the loop correction to the wino potential.
We discuss the problems that arise when one wishes to extend the existing general methods of computing radiative corrections to QCD jet cross sections to beyond next-to-leading order. Then we present a subtraction scheme that can be defined at any order in perturbation theory. We give a status report of the implementation of the method to computing jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at the next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy.
High-precision measurements of the relic dark matter density and the calculation of dark matter annihilation branching fractions in the sun or the galactic halo today motivate the computation of the neutralino annihilation cross section beyond leading order. We consider neutralino annihilation via squark exchange and parameterize the effective annihilation vertex as a dimension-six operator suppressed by two powers of the squark mass and related to the divergence of the axial vector current of the final-state quarks. Since the axial vector current is conserved at tree level in the limit of mas…
In this document, we present the global QCD analysis of parton-to-kaon fragmentation functions at next-to-leading order accuracy using the latest experimental information on single-inclusive kaon production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An extended analysis of this work can be found in Ref.[1].
The interpretation of Drell-Yan production in terms of the antiquark densities depends on NLO corrections. Besides the NLO corrections to the familiar annihilation $q\bar{q}\to γ^* \to l^+ l^-$, there is a substantial contribution from the QCD Compton subprocesses $gq \to qγ^* \to q l^+ l^-$ and $g\bar{q} \to qγ^* \to q l^+ l^-$. The beam and target dependence of the two classes of corrections is different. We discuss the impact of this difference on the determination of the $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ asymmetry in the proton from the comparison of the $pp$ and $pn$ Drell-Yan production.
We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) radiative correction to the color-octet $h_c$ inclusive production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at Super $B$ factory, within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework. The analytic expression for the NLO short-distance coefficient (SDC) accompanying the color-octet production operator $\mathcal{O}_8^{h_c}(^1S_0)$ is obtained after summing both virtual and real corrections. The size of NLO correction for the color-octet production channel is found to be positive and substantial. The NLO prediction to the $h_c$ energy spectrum is plagued with unphys…
We calculate the cross sections of inclusive J/psi production in photoproduction and two-photon scattering, involving both direct and resolved photons, and in e^+e^- annihilation at next-to-leading order (NLO) within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD), including the full relativistic corrections due to the intermediate ^1S_0^{[8]}, ^3S_1^{[8]}, and ^3P_J^{[8]} color-octet (CO) states. Exploiting also our previous results on hadroproduction, we perform a combined fit of the respective CO long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) to all available high-quali…
We present recent developments concerning Higgs production in bottom quark annihilation and gluon fusion. For bottom quark annihilation, we show the transverse momentum distribution of the associated jets. Furthermore, we discuss the distribution of events into n-jet bins for n=0 and n>0 at NNLO and NLO, respectively. For gluon fusion, the quality of the heavy-top limit for differential quantities at O(α_s^4) is studied by taking into account higher order terms in the 1/m_{top} expansion.
Fitting $Z^0$-pole data from ALEPH and SLD, and TPC data at a lower c.m.s.\ energy, we fix the boundary condition for NLO parton$\to$hadron (hadron$=π^\pm, K^\pm, \sum_h h^\pm$) fragmentation functions (FFs) at the low resolution scale of the radiative parton model of Glück, Reya and Vogt (GRV). Perturbative LO$\leftrightarrow$NLO stability is investigated. The emphasis of the fit is on information on the fragmentation process for individual light ($u,d,s$) and heavy ($c,b$) quark flavours where we comment on the factorization scheme for heavy quarks in $e^+e^-$ annihilations as compared to de…
The next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections are calculated for the pair-annihilation of spin-1 dark matter (DM) by dimensionally regularizing both ultraviolet and infrared singularities in non-relativistic limit (v<<1). The complete O(alphas) correction is about 8% due to the massless gluon contribution. An extra 5% will be added if there is a new interaction from a massive gluon of approximately same mass as the DM particle. The NLO QCD correction could give the sizable shift to the DM mass constrained by relic density measurements.
We present the full one-loop SUSY-QCD corrections to stop-antistop annihilation into gluons and light quarks within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model including Sommerfeld enhancement effects from the exchange of multiple gluons between the incoming particles. These corrections are important as stop (co)annihilation becomes the dominant contribution to the relic density for scenarios with a small mass difference between the neutralino and the stop which are less constrained by current LHC searches and consistent with the observation of a 125 GeV SM-like Higgs boson. We discuss important…
In this talk we discuss some aspects of the analytical calculation of energy correlations in electron-positron annihilation at a next-to-leading order in QCD. Our primary focus is on the most difficult task: the calculation of master integrals for real-emission contributions, which are functions of two dimensionless variables and the dimensional regulator. We use a method of differential equations and their so-called epsilon-form which is constructed with the help of the Fuchsia program based on Lee's algorithm.
We present a partonic Monte Carlo event generator that can be used for calculating the group independent kinematical functions of any infrared safe four-jet observable at NLO accuracy. As an example, we calculate the differential distribution of the $Π_1$ and $Π_4$ Fox-Wolfram moments. We find large K factors (K $>$ 2). The effect of the radiative correction is to increase the overall normalization, but not to reduce the renormalization scale dependence significantly.
In the algorithm presented here, the ME+PS approach to merge samples of tree-level matrix elements into inclusive event samples is combined with the POWHEG method, which includes exact next-to-leading order matrix elements in the parton shower. The advantages of the method are discussed and the quality of its implementation in Sherpa is exemplified by results for e+e- annihilation into hadrons at LEP, for deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering at HERA, for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production at the Tevatron and for W+W- production at LHC energies.
We present a new approach to combine multiple NLO parton-level calculations matched to parton showers into a single inclusive event sample. The method provides a description of hard multi-jet configurations at next-to leading order in the perturbative expansion of QCD, and it is supplemented with the all-orders resummed modelling of jet fragmentation provided by the parton shower. The formal accuracy of this technique is discussed in detail, invoking the example of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons. We focus on the effect of renormalisation scale variations in particular. Comparison …
We analyse the production of a Higgs boson in association with a top--antitop-quark pair in the Standard Model at the LHC. Considering the final state consisting of four b jets, two jets, one identified charged lepton and missing energy, we examine the irreducible background for the production rate and several kinematical distributions. While ttH production and decay is roughly a fourth of the full process for the final state specified above, ttbb production constitutes the main contribution with about $92\%$. Surprisingly, interference effects result in a reduction of the cross-section by fiv…
We report on a method for matching the next-to-leading order calculation of QCD jet production in e+e- annihilation with a Monte Carlo parton shower event generator (MC) to produce realistic final states. The final result is accurate to next-to-leading order (NLO) for infrared-safe one-scale quantities, such as the Durham 3-jet fraction y_3, and agrees well with parton shower results for multi-scale quantities, such as the jet mass distribution in 3-jet events. For our numerical results, the NLO calculation is matched to the event generator Pythia, though the method is more general. We compare…
There is an increasing interest in accurate dark matter relic density predictions, which requires next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. The method applied up to now uses zero-temperature NLO calculations of annihilation cross sections in the standard Boltzmann equation for freeze-out, and is conceptually problematic, since it ignores the finite-temperature infrared (IR) divergences from soft and collinear radiation and virtual effects. We address this problem systematically by starting from non-equilibrium quantum field theory, and demonstrate on a realistic model that soft and collinear t…
Factorizing the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, differential in $z_h$, $P_T$ and thrust, is a highly non trivial task. We have devised a factorization scheme that allows us to recast the $e^+e^- \to hX$ cross section in the convolution of a perturbatively calculable coefficient and a universal Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) Fragmentation Function (FF). The predictions obtained from our NLO-NLL perturbative computation, together with a simple ansatz to model the non-perturbative part of the TMD, are applied to the experimental measurements of the BELLE…
We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the six most important event shape variables related to three-particle final states in electron-positron annihilation. The corrections are sizeable for all variables, however their magnitude is substantially different for different observables. We observe that the NNLO corrections yield a considerably better agreement between theory and experimental data both in shape and normalisation of the event shape distributions. The renormalisation scale dependence of the theoretical prediction is substantially reduced compared to th…
We compute the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion contribution in $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC. We consider the full leptonic process $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime\, -}ν_{\ell}{\barν}_{\ell^\prime}+X$, by including resonant and non-resonant diagrams, spin correlations and off-shell effects. Quark-gluon partonic channels are included for the first time in the calculation, and our results are combined with NNLO predictions to the quark annihilation channel at the fully differential level. The computed corrections, which are formally of ${\cal O}(α_{\mathrm{S}}^3)$, increase the N…
We report on the general purpose numerical program MERCUTIO, which can be used to calculate any infrared safe four-jet quantity in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-leading order. The program is based on the dipole formalism and uses a remapping of phase-space in order to improve the efficiency of the Monte Carlo integration. Numerical results are given for the four-jet fraction and the D-parameter. These results are compared with already existing ones in the literature and serve as a cross-check. The program can also be used to investigate the internal structure of three-jet events at…
We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of four charged leptons in hadron collisions. We present the computation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the loop-induced gluon fusion contribution. Our predictions include, for the first time, also the quark-gluon partonic channels. The computed corrections, which are formally of ${\cal O}(α_{\rm s}^3)$, turn out to increase the loop-induced Born-level result by an amount ranging from 75% to 71% as $\sqrt{s}$ ranges from 8 to 13 TeV. We combine our result with state-of-the-art NNLO corrections to the quark annihilation ch…
In this talk we discuss an algorithm for the numerical calculation of one-loop QCD amplitudes and present results at next-to-leading order for jet observables in electron-positron annihilation calculated with the above-mentioned method. The algorithm consists of subtraction terms, approximating the soft, collinear and ultraviolet divergences of QCD one-loop amplitudes, as well as a method to deform the integration contour for the loop integration into the complex plane to match Feynman's i delta rule. The algorithm is formulated at the amplitude level and does not rely on Feynman graphs. There…

We investigate stau-antistau annihilation into heavy quarks in the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model within the DM@NLO project. We present the calculation of the corresponding cross section including corrections up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ and QED Sommerfeld enhancement. The numerical impact of these corrections is discussed for the cross section and the dark matter relic density, where we focus on top-quark final states and consider either neutralino or gravitino dark matter. Similarly to previous work, we find that the presented corrections should be included when calculati…
