We study the vector-axialvector mixing in a hot medium and its evolution toward the chiral phase transition using different symmetry restoration scenarios based on the generalized hidden local symmetry framework. We show that the presence of the $a_1$ meson reduces the vector spectral function around $ρ$ meson mass and enhances it around $a_1$ meson mass. The coupling strength of $a_1$ to $ρ$ and $π$ vanishes at the critical temperature due to the degenerate $ρ$-$a_1$ masses. This feature holds rigorously in the chiral limit and still stays intact to good approximation for the physical pion mass.
We discuss the importance of the axialvector meson in chiral phase transition at finite temperature. We show that there exists a significant contribution in the vector spectral function from the axialvector meson through the vector-axialvector mixing in hot matter.
We perform a calculation of the isospin and hypercharge axialvector current propagators to two loops in SU(3)xSU(3) chiral perturbation theory. A large number of order p^6 divergent counterterms are fixed, and complete two-loop renormalized expressions for the pion and eta masses and decay constants are given. The calculated isospin and hypercharge axialvector polarization functions are used as input in new chiral sum rules, valid to second order in the light quark masses. Some phenomenological implications of these sum rules are considered.
We consider vector and axialvector mesons in the framework of a gauged linear sigma model with chiral $U(N_f)_R \times U(N_f)_L$ symmetry. For $N_f=2$, we investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate and the meson masses as a function of temperature by solving a system of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations derived via the 2PI formalism in double-bubble approximation. We find that the inclusion of vector and axialvector mesons tends to sharpen the chiral transition. Within our approximation scheme, the mass of the $ρ$ meson increases by about 100 MeV towards the chiral transition.
We report on recent work relating the medium effects observed in dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions to potential signals of chiral symmetry restoration. The key connection remains the approach to spectral function degeneracy between the vector-isovector channel with its chiral partner, the axialvector-isovector channel. Several approaches are discussed to elaborate this connection, namely QCD and Weinberg sum rules with input for chiral order parameters from lattice QCD, and chiral hadronic theory to directly evaluate the medium effects of the axialvector channel and the pertinent pion d…
In this article, we separate the vector and axialvector components of the tensor diquark operators explicitly, construct the axialvector-axialvector type and vector-vector type scalar tetraquark currents and scalar-tensor type tensor tetraquark current to study the scalar, vector and axialvector tetraquark states with the QCD sum rules in a consistent way. The present calculations do not favor assigning the $Z_c(4100)$ to be a scalar or vector tetraquark state. If the $Z_c(4100)$ is a scalar tetraquark state without mixing effects, it should have a mass about $3.9\,\rm{GeV}$ or $4.0\,\rm{GeV}$…
A new calculation of the isospin and hypercharge axialvector current propagators ($Δ_{A33}^{μν}(q^2)$ and $Δ_{A88}^{μν}(q^2)$) to two loops in SU(3) x SU(3) chiral perturbation theory is used to derive chiral spectral function sum rules valid to second order in the light quark masses. Explicit forms are given for the three-pion isospin axialvector spectral functions at low energy and application of the sum rules to the determination of counterterms of the chiral lagrangian is discussed.
Based on schematic two-level models extended to $a_1$-meson degrees of freedom, we investigate possible mechanisms of chiral restoration in the vector/axialvector channels in cold nuclear matter. In the first part of this article we employ the massive Yang-Mills framework to construct an effective chiral Lagrangian based on low-energy mesonic modes at finite density. The latter are identified through nuclear collective excitations of `meson'-sobar type such as $π\leftrightarrow [Δ(1232)N^{-1}]\equiv\hatπ$, $ρ\leftrightarrow [N^* (1520)N^{-1}]\equiv\hatρ$, etc.. In a mean-field type treatment t…
Theoretical approaches to assess modifications of vector mesons in the medium, as well as their experimental identification via electromagnetic probes, are discussed. Implications for the nature of chiral symmetry restoration in hot/dense matter are outlined and put into context with the axialvector channel.
The current theoretical status in the analysis and interpretation of low-mass dilepton measurements in (ultra-) relativistic heavy-ion experiments is reviewed. Special emphasis is put on potential signals of (partial) restoration of dynamically broken chiral symmetry in a hot and dense hadronic medium. It follows from chiral symmetry alone that parity partners of hadronic correlation functions must become identical when the symmetry is restored. The assessment of medium effects in the vector channel, which governs the dilepton production, thus necessitates a simultaneous treatment of the vecto…
We present an analysis of four sum rules, each based on chiral symmetry and containing the difference $ρ_{\rm V}(s) - ρ_{\rm A}(s)$ of isovector vector and axialvector spectral functions. Experimental data from tau lepton decay and electron-positron scattering identify the spectral functions over a limited kinematic domain. We summarize the status of the existing database. However, a successful determination of the sum rules requires additional content, in the form of theoretical input. We show how chiral symmetry and the operator product expansion can be used to constrain the spectral functio…
A momentum dependent quark mass may be incorporated into a quark model in a manner consistent with dynamically broken chiral symmetry. We use this to study the high $Q^2$ behavior of the vector, axialvector, scalar and pseudoscalar two-point correlation functions. Expanding the results to order $1/Q^6$, we show the correspondence between the dynamical quark mass and the vacuum condensates which appear in the operator product expansion of QCD. We recover the correct leading logarithmic $Q^2$ dependence of the various terms in the OPE, but we also find substantial subleading corrections which ar…
Chiral symmetry imposes some constrains on hadron correlation functions in dense medium. These constraints imply a certain general structure of the two- and three-point correlation functions of chiral partners and lead to the effect of mixing arising from the interaction of the long-ranged nuclear pions with corresponding interpolating currents. It reflects the phenomena of partial restoration of chiral symmetry. We consider soft pion corrections for quark condensates and several possible pairs of chiral partners for both mesons and nucleons and analyse their mixing patterns. We explored both …
The effective action of the linear meson model generates the mesonic n-point functions with all quantum effects included. Based on chiral symmetry and a systematic quark mass expansion we derive relations between meson masses and decay constants. The model ``predicts'' values for f_eta and f_eta' which are compatible with observation. This involves a large momentum dependent eta-eta' mixing angle which is different for the on--shell decays of the eta and the eta'. We also present relations for the masses of the 0^{++} octet. The parameters of the linear meson model are computed and related to …
The spin fractions and deep inelastic structure functions of the proton are analyzed using chiral field theory involving Goldstone bosons. A detailed comparison with recent chiral models sheds light on their successful description of the spin fractions of the proton as being due to neglecting helicity non-flip chiral transitions. This approximation is valid for zero mass quarks but not for constituent quarks. Since the chiral spin fraction models with the pure spin-flip approximation reproduce the measured spin fractions of the proton, axialvector constituent-quark-Goldstone boson coupling is …
In this paper the spectrum of quark-antiquark systems, including light mesons and tachyons, is studied in the true vacuum and in the chiral invariant vacuum. The mass gap equation for the vacua and the Salpeter-RPA equation for the mesons are solved for a simple chiral invariant and confining quark model. At T=0 and in the true vacuum, the scalar and pseudoscalar, or the vector and axial vector are not degenerate, and in the chiral limit, the pseudoscalar groundstates are Goldstone bosons. At T=0 the chiral invariant vacuum is an unstable vacuum, decaying through an infinite number of scalar a…
The effect of mixing of the vector and axial vector correlation functions in the nuclear medium arising from the interaction of nuclear pions with corresponding interpolating currents is considered. It is shown that the mass difference between $ρ$ and $a_1$ meson gets smaller with the increase of the nuclear density reflecting the phenomena of partial restoration of chiral symmetry whereas the absolute values of meson masses may both decrease and increase in nuclear medium depending on the model used for the phenomenological spectral density.
Based on a recently derived effective chiral meson Lagrangian from the extended SU(2)\otimes SU(2) Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model, in the linear realization of chiral symmetry, we extract to leading order in the 1/N_c expansion all associated relevant three-point functions ρ\to ππ, σ\to ππ, a_1 \to ρπ, a_1 \to σπ, as well as the amplitude for ππscattering. We discuss the formal differences of these amplitudes as compared with those derived in the literature and calculate the associated decay widths and scattering parameters. The differences have two origins: i) new terms, which are proport…
We construct the spectral functions for light vector mesons at finite density and temperature in the presence of a novel mixing between parity partners, induced by baryon density via the Wess-Zumino-Witten action. As the main origin of in-medium broadening, a set of baryon resonances that strongly couple to the vector mesons and the modifications of kaons and anti-kaons due to the Kaplan-Nelson term are included. It is shown that the vector spectra, even with the broadening effects, exhibit sizable signatures of chiral symmetry restoration thanks to the chiral mixing depending on three-momenta…
The spin polarization functions $(Δu, ~Δd, ~Δs)$ for proton are calculated in the chiral quark model ($χ$QM) with SU(3) symmetry breaking as well as configuration mixing generated by one gluon exchange forces for the NMC and the most recent E866 data. Besides reproducing the spin polarization functions $Δu,Δd, Δs$ as well as $G_A/G_V$, it can accomodate nucleon magnetic moments and neutron charge radius as well, thus resolving the compatibility problem of these parameters which could not be achieved in constituent quark models.
The exotic baryon $Θ^+$ (1540 MeV)$ is visualised as an expected (iso) rotational excitation in the Chiral Soliton Model. It is also argued as a Pentaquark baryon state in a constituent quark model with strong diquark correlations. I contrast the two points of view; the similarities and differences between the two pictures. Collective excitation, characteristic of Chiral Soliton Model points toward small mixing of representations in the wake of SU(3) breaking. In contrast, Constituent quark Models prefer near ``ideal'' mixing, similar to $ω- ϕ$ mixing.
We derive the expressions of the vector and axial current from a chiral Lagrangian restricted to nucleons and pions. They display mixing terms between the axial and vector currents. We study the modifications in the nuclear medium of the coupling constants of the axial current, namely the pion decay constant and the nucleonic axial one due to the requirements of chiral symmetry. We express the renormalizations in terms of the local scalar pion density. The latter also governs the quark condensate evolu- tion and we discuss the link between this evolution and the renormaliza- tions. In the case…
The baryon number one soliton of the NJL model is investigated. The Euclidian effective action is regularized using Schwinger's proper time method. Numerical results for the static soliton energy are presented for the cases without and with vector and axialvector fields. It is found that the baryon number is carried by the polarized Dirac sea of the quarks if the $a_1$ meson is included in contrast to the case without $a_1$ where the baryon number resides on valence quarks. Thus the model strongly supports the picture of the baryon as a topological soliton of the meson fields. Including the $ω…
We confront different models for medium modifications of the electromagnetic correlation function to recent dimuon spectra from the NA60 collaboration for central In-In collisions at the CERN-SPS. In the low-mass region (M \lesssim 1.0 GeV), we evaluate medium modifications of the spectral properties of ρ-, ω- and ϕ-mesons. In the intermediate-mass region (M>1.0 GeV), we employ schematic models for the mixing of vector and axialvector current correlators, which provide a mechanism for chiral-symmetry restoration.
We present a systematic study of the vector--axial-vector mixing (V-A mixing) in the current correlation functions and its evolution with temperature within an effective field theory. The $a_1$-$ρ$-$π$ coupling vanishes at the critical temperature $T_c$ and thus the V-A mixing also vanishes. A remarkable observation is that even for finite $m_π$ the $ρ$ and $a_1$ meson masses are almost degenerate at $T_c$. The vanishing V-A mixing at $T_c$ stays approximately intact.
The forms of the neutral, non-strange pseudoscalar propagator matrix and mixed axial current correlator, $\lngle0|T(A_μ^3 A_ν^8)|0\rangle$, are discussed at next-to-leading (one-loop) order in chiral perturbation theory, and the results compared to those obtained using QCD sum rules. This comparison provides a check of the truncations employed in the sum rule treatment of the current correlator. Values for the slope of the correlator with $q^2$ in the two approaches are found to differ by more than an order of magnitude and the source of this discrepancy is shown to be the incorrect chiral beh…
It is shown that including form factors for the quark-pseudoscalar meson couplings of the Georgi-Manohar chiral quark model allows one to obtain the leading off-shell dependence of $π^{o}- η$ mixing (as predicted by chiral perturbation theory) from the effect of quark loops on the meson propagators. Implications for $ρ^{o} - ω$ mixing and for the effects on meson mixing contributions to few body charge symmetry breaking observables are also discussed.
The chiral phase transition and color superconductivity in an extended NJL model with eight-quark interactions are studied. The scalar-type nonlinear term hastens the chiral phase transition, the scalar-vector mixing term suppresses effects of the vector-type linear term and the scalar-diquark mixing term makes the coexisting phase wider.
We investigate omega-phi meson mixing to leading order in chiral perturbation theory utilizing the antisymmetric tensor field formulation. We update the quark mass ratio R from rho-omega mixing, R = 42 \pm 4.
We present an extension of the string-inspired technique suitable to the calculation of amplitudes and effective Lagrangians involving both vector and axial vector gauge fields. The technique is easily adaptable to problems involving constant external fields. We demonstrate the advantages of the formalism by a calculation of the one-loop vector-axialvector amplitude in a general constant electromagnetic field. The relevance of this calculation for photon-neutrino processes is commented upon. We also clarify the properties of the formalism with respect to the chiral symmetry, and its connection…
We study the structural change of the vector spectral function and integrated production rates of dileptons in the presence of the chiral mixing induced exclusively at finite density. The mixing produces multiple bumps and peaks around the vacuum masses of the $ρ, ω$ and $ϕ$ resonances in the spectral function. The arising modification becomes pronounced when the mass difference between parity partners decreases. In particular, the emergent enhancement around the vacuum $ϕ$ meson in the production rates serves as an excellent signature of the partially-restored chiral symmetry in heavy-ion col…
A systematic study of the $η$-$η'$ mixing in Large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory is presented with special emphasis on the role of the next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions in the combined momentum, quark-mass, and $1/N_c$ expansions. At this order, loop corrections as well as OZI-rule-violating pieces need to be included. Mixing angles as well as pseudoscalar decay constants are discussed within this framework. The results are compared with recent phenomenological approaches.
We investigate eta-eta' mixing in infrared regularized U(3) chiral perturbation theory by calculating the eta and eta' masses up to one-loop order. From this analysis it becomes obvious that even at leading order eta-eta' mixing does not obey the usually assumed one-mixing angle scheme if large N_c counting rules are not employed.
We present a calculation of the $η$-$η'$ mixing in the framework of large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory. A general expression for the $η$-$η'$ mixing at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) is derived, including higher-derivative terms up to fourth order in the four momentum, kinetic and mass terms. In addition, the axial-vector decay constants of the $η$-$η'$ system are determined at NNLO. The numerical analysis of the results is performed successively at LO, NLO, and NNLO. We investigate the influence of one-loop corrections, OZI-rule-violating parameters, and $\mathcal{O}(N_c p^6)$ conta…
The importance of exchange currents, and of conserving isotopic spin at both the quark and baryon levels in application of the chiral quark model to any calculation of baryon magnetic moments is emphasized.
New mixing structures between chiral generations of elementary particles at low energy are shown in a vectorlike model with a horizontal symmetry SU(1,1). In this framework the chiral model including odd number chiral generations is realized via the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the horizontal symmetry. It is shown that the Yukawa coupling matrices of chiral generations have naturally hierarchical patterns, and in some cases the overall factors of their Yukawa coupling matrices, e.g. the Yukawa coupling constants of the bottom quark and tau lepton are naturally suppressed.
We describe a recently developed heavy-light chiral quark model and show how it can be used to calculate decay amplitudes for heavy mesons. In particular, we discuss B- antiB mixing, B -> D antiD, B -> D eta' and the beta term for D* -> D gamma .
The strong and electromagnetic corrections to $ρ-ω$ mixing are calculated using a SU(2) version of resonance chiral theory up to next-to-leading orders in $1/N_C$ expansion, respectively. Up to our accuracy, the effect of the momentum dependence of $ρ-ω$ mixing is incorporated due to the inclusion of loop contributions. We analyze the impact of $ρ-ω$ mixing on the pion vector form factor by performing numerical fit to the data extracted from $e^+e^-\rightarrow π^+π^-$ and $τ\rightarrow ν_τ2π$, while the decay width of $ω\rightarrow π^+π^-$ is taken into account as a constraint. It is found tha…
In order to calculate the rho - omega mixing we extend the chiral couplings of the low-lying vector mesons in chiral perturbation theory to a lagrangian that contains two vector fields. We determine the momentum dependence of the two-point function and recover an earlier result for the on-shell expression. We discuss the off-shell behaviour of the mixing.
We determine the $η-η'$ mixing angle via a procedure relatively independent of theoretical assumptions by simultaneously fitting $η- eta'$ reactions involving the anomaly--$η,η'\toγγ, π^+π^-γ$. We extract reasonably precise renormalized values of the octet and singlet pseudoscalar decay constants $F_8,F_0$ as well as the mixing angle $θ$.
The derivative of the grand potential in mean field approximation, non-strange and strange condensates and deconfinement phase-transition in thermal and dense hadronic medium are verified in extended SU(3) linear sigma-model (eLSM). In determining the chiral phase-transition, the chiral condensates sigma_x and sigma_y are analysed. The chiral mesonic phase-structures in temperature- and density-dependence are taken as free parameters to be fitted. These parameters are classified corresponding to scalar meson nonets; (pseudo)-scalar and (axial)-vector. For deconfinement phase-transition, effect…
A chiral invariant Lagrangian describing the tetraquark-quarkonia interaction is considered at the leading and subleading order in the large-$N_{c}$ expansion. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking generates mixing of scalar tetraquark and quarkonia states and non-vanishing tetraquark condensates. In particular, the mixing strength is related to the decay strengths of tetraquark states into pseudoscalar mesons. The results show that scalar states below 1 GeV are mainly four-quark states and the scalars between 1 and 2 GeV quark-antiquark states, probably mixed with the scalar glueball in the is…
We study patterns of chiral symmetry breaking at zero temperature and its subsequent restoration at nonzero temperature within the $SU(3)_{r} \times SU(3)_{\ell}$ linear sigma model. Gap equations for the masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons and the non-strange and strange quark condensates are systematically derived in the Hartree approximation via the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism. In the chiral limit, the chiral symmetry restoring transition is found to be first order, as predicted by universality arguments. Taking the experimental values for the meson masses, however, the tra…
Starting from the Chiral Perturbation Theory Lagrangian, but keeping different masses for the charged and neutral mesons, and using a previously developed non-perturbative unitary scheme that generates the lightest meson-meson resonances, we construct K Kbar to K Kbar and K Kbar to pi+ pi- in the vector channel. This allows us to obtain the kaon-loop contribution to the phi-rho mixing and study the phi to pi+pi- decay. The dominant contribution to this decay comes from the phi to gamma to pi+pi- process. However, there can be large interferences with the subdominant contributions coming from p…
If the hierarchy of quark masses comes out of simultaneous dynamical chiral and flavor symmetry breakings, it is inevitably accompanied by the flavor mixing. Therefore, these phenomena, independent in the standard model and in many of its generalizations, become related since they appear out of the same dynamics. The features of that high energy dynamics may be investigated via accordance with observed mass hierarchy and mixing.
In the framework of two-flavor extended linear sigma model with mixing between scalar quarkonium and tetraquark, we investigate the role of the tetraquark in the chiral phase transition. We explore various scenarios depending on the value of various parameters in our model. The physical mass spectrum of mesons put a tight constraint on the parameter set of our model. We find a sufficiently strong cubic self interaction of the tetraquark field can drive the chiral phase transition to first order even at zero quark chemical potential. Weak or absence of the cubic self interaction term of the tet…
The effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking and configuration mixing have been investigated for the weak vector and axial-vector form factors in the chiral constituent quark model (χCQM) for the strangeness changing as well as strangeness conserving semi-leptonic octet baryon decays in the nonperturbative regime. The results are in good agreement with existing experimental data and also show improvement over other phenomenological models.
We obtain explicit expressions for the ηand η' masses and decay constants using U_L(3) x U_R(3) chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order in a combined expansion in p^2 and 1/Nc. A numerical fit of the parameters appearing to this order of the expansion is also discussed.
The supernumerous eta(1405) is considered a strong candidate for the pseudoscalar glueball. In a phenomenological chiral approach, we consider a mixing scenario of bare pseudoscalar (n bar n) and (s bar s) quarkonia with the glueball. We study the decay properties and point out the peculiarities of this scenario in order to support the possible identification of the J(PC) = 0(-+) glueball.
In this paper, U(3)$_L\times$ U(3)$_R$ chiral theory of mesons is extended to the leading order in quark mass expansion in order to evaluate the $ρ^0-ω$ mixing. It is shown that the use of path integral method to integrate out the quark fields naturally leads to the $ρ^0-ω$ mixing vertices, and this mixing is entirely from the quark loop in this theory. The off-shell behaviour of the mixing amplitude is analyzed. The on-shell mixing amplitude is obtained from the decay $ω\to π^+π^-$. Furthermore, the constraints on the light quark mass parameters are extracted from the $ρ^0-ω$ mixing and the m…
The Coleman-Glashow sum-rule for magnetic moments is always fulfilled in the chiral quark model, independently of SU(3) symmetry breaking. This is due to the structure of the wave functions, coming from the non-relativistic quark model. Experimentally, the Coleman-Glashow sum-rule is violated by about ten standard deviations. To overcome this problem, two models of wave functions with configuration mixing are studied. One of these models violates the Coleman-Glashow sum-rule to the right degree and also reproduces the octet baryon magnetic moments rather accurately.
We construct a model for the quark mass and flavor mixing matrices, based on the hypothesis that the flavor weak eigenstates in the three families are distinguished by a spontaneously broken discrete $Z_6$ chiral symmetry. In a leading partially symmetric approximation, the model accommodates the family mass spectra, with a CKM matrix that is exactly unity. Adding small asymmetries in first order perturbation theory gives a CKM matrix with the correct qualitative structure, with $s_{23}/s_{12}$ and $s_{13}/s_{12}$ naturally of order $M_s/M_b$.
The impact of chiral symmetry on nuclear physics is discussed in the context of recent advances in the few-nucleon systems and of dimensional power counting. The tractability of few-nucleon calculations, illustrated by very recent solutions for $A = 2-6$, is shown to follow from power counting based on chiral Lagrangians. The latter predicts the suppression of $N$-body forces, as originally shown by Weinberg. Isospin violation in the nuclear force is similarly analyzed using the results of van Kolck, and this is shown to be consistent with results from the Nijmegen phase-shift analysis. Conven…
The implications of one gluon exchange generated configuration mixing in the Chiral Quark Model ($χ$QM$_{gcm}$) with SU(3) and axial U(1) symmetry breakings are discussed in the context of proton flavor and spin structure as well as the hyperon $β$-decay parameters. We find that $χ$QM$_{gcm}$ with SU(3) symmetry breaking is able to give a satisfactory unified fit for spin and quark distribution functions, with the symmetry breaking parameters $α=.4$, $β=.7$ and the mixing angle $ϕ=20^o$, both for NMC and the most recent E866 data. In particular, the agreement with data, in the case of $G_A/G_V…
