We obtain the relaxation time for the shear viscous stress for various geometries using the "membrane paradigm" formula proposed recently. We consider the generic Schwarzschild-AdS black holes (SAdS), the generic Dp-brane, the Klebanov-Tseytlin (KT) geometry, and the N=2* theory. The formula is the "shear mode" result and is not fully trustable, but it may be helpful to learn some generic behaviors about the relaxation time. For example, a simple formula summarizes all known results for SAdS, and a single expression summarizes the results for the Dp-brane and the KT geometry.
Recently an effective membrane theory valid in a "hydrodynamic limit" was proposed to describe entanglement dynamics of chaotic systems based on results in random quantum circuits and holographic gauge theories. In this paper, we show that this theory is robust under a large set of generalizations. In generic quench protocols we find that the membrane couples geometrically to hydrodynamics, joining quenches are captured by branes in the effective theory, and the entanglement of time evolved local operators can be computed by probing a time fold geometry with the membrane. We also demonstrate t…
We discuss recent work showing that in certain cases the membrane paradigm equations governing the dynamics of black hole horizons can be recast as relativistic conservation law equations. In the context of gauge/gravity dualities, these equations are interpreted as defining the viscous hydrodynamics of a holographically dual relativistic field theory. Using this approach, one can derive the viscous transport coefficients and the form of the entropy current for field theories dual to gravity plus matter fields.
We show how causal relativistic Navier-Stokes equations arise from the relativistic Boltzmann equation: the causality is preserved via a judicious choice of the zero modes of the collision operator. A completely analogous procedure may be used to extract causal hydrodynamics from the fluid-gravity correspondence: again, causality of the hydrodynamic equations is preserved by a suitable choice of zero modes of the corresponding differential operators in the bulk. We give examples of zero modes which give rise to causal hydrodynamic equations for non-conformal fluids with a conserved U(1) global…
It has recently been demonstrated that black hole dynamics at large D is dual to the motion of a probe membrane propagating in the background of a spacetime that solves Einstein's equations. The equation of motion of this membrane is determined by the membrane stress tensor. In this paper we `improve' the membrane stress tensor derived in earlier work to ensure that it defines consistent probe membrane dynamics even at finite $D$ while reducing to previous results at large D. Our improved stress tensor is the sum of a Brown York term and a fluid energy momentum tensor. The fluid has an unusual…
We use the membrane paradigm to analyze the horizon dynamics of a uniformly boosted black brane in a (d+2)-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter space-time and a Rindler acceleration horizon in (d+2)-dimensional Minkowski space-time. We show that in these cases the horizon dynamics is governed by the relativistic CFT hydrodynamics equations. The fluid velocity and temperature correspond to the normal to the horizon and to the surface gravity, respectively. The second law of thermodynamics for the fluid is mapped into the area increase theorem of General Relativity. The analysis is applicab…
We show that at the level of linear response the low frequency limit of a strongly coupled field theory at finite temperature is determined by the horizon geometry of its gravity dual, i.e. by the "membrane paradigm" fluid of classical black hole mechanics. Thus generic boundary theory transport coefficients can be expressed in terms of geometric quantities evaluated at the horizon. When applied to the stress tensor this gives a simple, general proof of the universality of the shear viscosity in terms of the universality of gravitational couplings, and when applied to a conserved current it gi…
Recently, an effective {\it membrane theory} was proposed that describes the ``hydrodynamic'' regime of the entanglement dynamics for general chaotic systems. Motivated by the new {\it bit threads} formulation of holographic entanglement entropy, given in terms of a convex optimization problem based on flow maximization, or equivalently tight packing of bit threads, we reformulate the membrane theory as a max flow problem by proving a max flow-min cut theorem. In the context of holography, we explain the relation between the max flow program dual to the membrane theory and the max flow program…
We obtain new transport coefficients of causal hydrodynamics for the M2 and the M5-brane using a Kubo-like formula proposed by Baier, Romatschke, Son, Starinets, and Stephanov (arXiv:0712.2451 [hep-th]). The relaxation times agree with the ones obtained from the "sound mode" in our paper (arXiv:0712.2916 [hep-th]).
We study causal hydrodynamics (Israel-Stewart theory) of gauge theory plasmas from the AdS/CFT duality. Causal hydrodynamics requires new transport coefficients (relaxation times) and we compute them for a number of supersymmetric gauge theories including the N=4 SYM. However, the relaxation times obtained from the "shear mode" do not agree with the ones from the "sound mode," which implies that the Israel-Stewart theory is not a sufficient framework to describe the gauge theory plasmas.
A new formula to calculate the transport coefficients of the causal dissipative hydrodynamics is derived by using the projection operator method (Mori-Zwanzig formalism) in [T. Koide, Phys. Rev. E75, 060103(R) (2007)]. This is an extension of the Green-Kubo-Nakano (GKN) formula to the case of non-Newtonian fluids, which is the essential factor to preserve the relativistic causality in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. This formula is the generalization of the GKN formula in the sense that it can reproduce the GKN formula in a certain limit. In this work, we extend the previous work so as…
We derive a first-order, stable and causal, relativistic hydrodynamic theory from the microscopic kinetic equation using the gradient expansion technique in a general frame. The general frame is introduced from the arbitrary matching conditions for hydrodynamic fields. The interaction is introduced in the relativistic Boltzmann equation through the momentum-dependent relaxation time approximation (MDRTA) with the proposed collision operator that preserves the conservation laws. We demonstrate here for the first time that not only the general frame choice, but also the momentum dependence of mi…
A systematic expansion of the Boltzmann equation for the diffusion of dilute tracers, in powers of the Knudsen number, carried out to next-to-leading order (NLO), gives the relativistic causal diffusion equation (Kelly's equation). Using dimensionless combinations of dynamical quantities, we show when the small NLO term plays a crucially important role. We proceed to show that a derivation of Kelly's equation from a microscopic theory of the correlation function of the number density of diffusers is possible. The correlator fulfils the Green-Kubo relation for the diffusion constant, as well as…
The shear viscosity coefficient and the corresponding relaxation time for causal dissipative hydrodynamics are calculated based on the microscopic formula proposed in [T. Koide and T. Kodama, Phys. Rev. \textbf{E 78}, 051107 (2008)]. Here, the exact formula is transformed into a more compact form and applied it to evaluate these transport coefficients in the chiral perturbation theory and perturbative QCD. It is shown that in the leading order calculation, the causal shear viscosity coefficient $η$ reduces to that of the ordinary Green-Kubo-Nakano formula, and the relaxation time $τ_π$ is rela…
In the context of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, we compute the finite 't Hooft coupling $λ$ correction to the non-linear second-order hydrodynamic coefficient $λ_3$ from a Kubo formula based on fully retarded three-point functions using AdS/CFT. Although $λ_3$ is known to vanish in the infinite 't Hooft coupling limit, we find that the finite $λ$ correction is non-zero. We also present a set of Kubo formulae for the non-linear coefficients $λ_{1,2,3}$, which is more convenient than the one that has appeared recently elsewhere.
In the present work, we develop a causal theory of relativistic non-ideal fluids up to the second order in the Eckart frame using gradient expansion scheme. Keeping the spirit of Mueller-Israel-Stewart formalism, the general forms of bulk viscosity, shear viscosity tensor and the heat flow vector are presented. Since each of the flux quantities explicitly carry curvature terms, we show that our formalism finds application in astrophysics in particular in the strong gravity regime. We elucidate two such applications namely in viscous thick accretion disks also known as Polish doughnuts and in a…
Relativistic Navier-Stokes equations express the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor and the particle number current in terms of the local hydrodynamic variables: temperature, fluid velocity, and the chemical potential. We show that the viscous-fluid equations are stable and causal if one adopts suitable non-equilibrium definitions of the hydrodynamic variables.
