We study higher derivative corrections to the statistical entropy function and the statistical entropy for five dimensional BMPV black holes by doing the asymptotic expansion of the partition function. This enables us to evaluate entropy for a large range of charges, even out of Cardy (Farey tail) limit.
The microscopic formula for the degeneracy of BMPV black hole microstates contains a series of exponentially suppressed corrections to the leading Bekenstein Hawking expression. We identify saddle points of the quantum entropy function for the BMPV black hole which are natural counterparts to these corrections and discuss the matching of leading and next-to-leading terms from the microscopic and macroscopic sides in a limit where the black hole charges are large.
Following Kerr/CFT correspondence, we compute the entropy of five-dimensional supersymmetric rotating BMPV black holes. We successfully reproduce Iyer-Wald formula in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet terms from the viewpoint of microscopic CFT. This further supports the higher-derivative version of Kerr/CFT prescription proposed in arXiv:0903.4176 for four-dimensional extremal Kerr black holes.
We present a formula for the quantum entropy of supersymmetric five-dimensional spinning black holes in M-theory compactified on $CY_3$, i.e., BMPV black holes. We use supersymmetric localization in the framework of off-shell five dimensional $N=2$ supergravity coupled to $I = 1,\dots,N_V + 1$ off-shell vector multiplets. The theory is governed at two-derivative level by the symmetric tensor $\mathcal{C}_{IJK}$ (the intersection numbers of the Calabi-Yau) and at four-derivative level by the gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons coupling $c_I$ (the second Chern class of the Calabi-Yau). The quantum …

We study unphysical features of the BMPV black hole and how each can be resolved using the enhancon mechanism. We begin by reviewing how the enhancon mechanism resolves a class of repulson singularities which arise in the BMPV geometry when D--branes are wrapped on K3. In the process, we show that the interior of an enhancon shell can be a time machine due to non-vanishing rotation. We link the resolution of the time machine to the recently proposed resolution of the BMPV naked singularity / "over-rotating" geometry through the expansion of strings in the presence of RR flux. We extend the ana…

We present subleading corrections to the N=2 supersymmetric black hole entropy. These subleading contributions correspond to instanton corrections of the Type II string theory. In particular we consider an axion free black hole solution of low-energy effective Type II string theory. We present a procedure to include successively all instanton corrections. Expanding these corrections at particular points in moduli space yields polynomial and logarithmic instanton corrections to the classical black hole entropy. We comment on a microscopic interpretation of these instanton corrections and find t…
We find a family of novel supersymmetric phases of the D1-D5 CFT, which in certain ranges of charges have more entropy than all known ensembles. We also find bulk BPS configurations that exist in the same range of parameters as these phases, and have more entropy than a BMPV black hole; they can be thought of as coming from a BMPV black hole shedding a "hair" condensate outside of the horizon. The entropy of the bulk configurations is smaller than that of the CFT phases, which indicates that some of the CFT states are lifted at strong coupling. Neither the bulk nor the boundary phases are capt…
We present a systematic study of the moduli space of asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric black hole solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Previously, it has been shown that such solutions must be multi-centred solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base. In this paper we perform a full analysis of three-centred solutions with a single black hole, for which there are seven regular black hole solutions. We find that four of these can have the same conserved charges as the BMPV black hole. These consist of a black lens with L(3,1) horizon topology and three distinct fam…
In five-dimensional minimal supergravity, there are spherical black holes with nontrivial topology outside the horizon which have the same conserved charges at infinity as the BMPV solution. We show that some of these black holes have greater entropy than the BMPV solution. These spacetimes are all asymptotically flat, stationary, and supersymmetric. We also show that there is a limit in which the black hole shrinks to zero size and the solution becomes a nonsingular "bubbling" geometry. Thus, these solutions provide explicit analytic examples of placing black holes inside solitons.
We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating extremal black holes using quantum entropy function i.e. Euclidean quantum gravity approach. Our analysis includes five dimensional supersymmetric BMPV black holes in type IIB string theory on T^5 and K3 x S^1 as well as in the five dimensional CHL models, and also non-supersymmetric extremal Kerr black hole and slowly rotating extremal Kerr-Newmann black holes in four dimensions. For BMPV black holes our results are in perfect agreement with the microscopic results derived from string theory. In particular we reproduce correctly th…
Using the fact that 2D Newton constant is wholly induced by a conformal field theory, we derive a formula for the entanglement entropy of the anti-de Sitter black hole in two spacetime dimensions. The leading term in the large black hole mass expansion of our formula reproduces exactly the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_{BH}, whereas the subleading term behaves as ln S_{BH}. This subleading term has the universal form typical for the entanglement entropy of physical systems described by effective conformal fields theories (e.g. one-dimensional statistical models at the critical point).

BPS black hole degeneracies can be expressed in terms of an inverse Laplace transform of a partition function based on a mixed electric/magnetic ensemble, which involves a non-trivial integration measure. This measure has been evaluated for black holes with various degrees of supersymmetry and for N=4 supersymmetric black holes all results agree. It generally receives contributions from non-holomorphic corrections. An explicit evaluation of these corrections in the context of the effective action of the FHSV model reveals that these are related to, but quantitatively different from, the non-ho…
We examine the dual conformal field theory for extremal charged black holes in five-dimensional minimal supergravity with 2 independent angular momenta. The conformal field theory Virasoro algebra, central charge, and temperature are calculated. Additionally the conformal field theory entropy is calculated using the Cardy formula and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy. The central charges are directly proportional to the angular momentum components of the black hole. In five and higher dimensions, rotations of the spacetime correspond to rotations of the central charges lead…
Black-holes are considered to be theoretical laboratories for testing models of quantum gravity. It is usually believed that any candidate for quantum gravity must explain the microscopic origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking ($S_{_{\rm BH}}$) entropy. In this letter, we argue (i) the requirement for a candidate approach to go beyond $S_{_{\rm BH}}$ and provide generic subleading corrections, and (ii) the importance to {\it disentangle} and identify the degrees of freedom leading to $S_{_{\rm BH}}$ and its subleading corrections. Using the approach of entanglement of modes across the horizon, we sh…
We construct smooth supergravity solutions describing a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole centered at an arbitrary distance above the ring. We find that as one moves the black hole the entropy of the ring remains constant, but the angular momentum coming from the supergravity fluxes changes. Our solutions also show that in order to merge a BPS black ring with a BPS black hole one has to increase one of the angular momenta of the ring, and that the result of the merger is always a BMPV black hole. We also find a class of mergers that are thermodynamically reversible, and comment on their phy…
We show that a Rademacher expansion can be used to establish an exact bound for the entropy of black holes within a conformal field theory framework. This convergent expansion includes all subleading corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking term.
An interesting case of string/black hole transition occurs in two-dimensional non-critical string theory dressed with a compact CFT. In these models the high energy densities of states of perturbative strings and black holes have the same leading behavior when the Hawking temperature of the black hole is equal to the Hagedorn temperature of perturbative strings. We compare the first subleading terms in the black hole and closed string entropies in this setting and argue that the entropy interpolates between these expressions as the energy is varied. We compute the subleading correction to the …
We study the entropy function of two N =2 string compactifications obtained as freely acting orbifolds of N=4 theories : the STU model and the FHSV model. The Gauss-Bonnet term for these compactifications is known precisely. We apply the entropy function formalism including the contribution of this four derivative term and evaluate the entropy of dyons to the first subleading order in charges for these models. We then propose a partition function involving the product of three Siegel modular forms of weight zero which reproduces the degeneracy of dyonic black holes in the STU model to the firs…
We compute the black hole horizon entanglement entropy for a massless scalar field in the brick wall model by incorporating the minimal length. Taking the minimal length effects on the occupation number $n(ω,l)$ and the Hawking temperature into consideration, we obtain the leading UV divergent term and the subleading logarithmic term in the entropy. The leading divergent term scales with the horizon area. The subleading logarithmic term is the same as that in the usual brick wall model without the minimal length.
An example of entropy enigma with a controlled CFT dual was recently studied in arXiv:1108.0411. The enigmatic bulk configurations, considered within the STU model, can be mapped under spectral flow into black rings with three monopole and dipole charges. Even though the bulk and CFT configurations existed in the same region of parameter space, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the bulk configurations was found to be lower than the microscopic entropy from the CFT. While it is possible that the difference in entropy is due to the bulk and boundary configurations being at different points in th…
We here investigate the entanglement structure of the ground state of a (3+1)-dimensional U(1) quantum spin liquid, which is described by the deconfined phase of a compact U(1) gauge theory. A gapless photon is the only low-energy excitation, with matter existing as deconfined but gapped excitations of the system. It is found that, for a given bipartition of the system, the elements of the entanglement spectrum can be grouped according to the electric flux between the two regions, leading to a useful interpretation of the entanglement spectrum in terms of electric charges living on the boundar…
We show the equality between macroscopic and microscopic black hole entropy for a class of four dimensional non-supersymmetric black holes in ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity theory, up to the first subleading order in their charges. This solves a long standing entropy puzzle for this class of black holes. The macroscopic entropy has been computed in the presence of a newly derived higher-derivative supersymmetric invariant of \cite{Butter:2013lta}, connected to the five dimensional supersymmetric Weyl squared Lagrangian. Microscopically, the crucial role in obtaining the equivalence is played by the…
In these lectures we introduce some of the principles and techniques that are relevant for the determination of the entropy of extremal black holes by either string theory or supergravity. We consider such black holes with N=2 and N=4 supersymmetry, explaining how agreement is obtained for both the terms that are leading and those that are subleading in the limit of large charges. We discuss the relevance of these results in the context of the more recent developments.
Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of near-extremal rotating black holes

The quantum contribution of a scalar field to entropy of a dilatonic black hole is calculated in the brick wall model by the WKB method and analyzed by a high-temperature expansion. If the cutoff distance from the horizon approaches zero, the leading divergent piece of entropy turns out to be proportional to the "area" of the horizon surface (which has (N-1)-dimensional extension in (N+1)-dimensional space-time) and independent of other properties of black holes even in the case of general dilaton coupling. There is also qualitative argument with the known result of subleading divergence for N…
We reduce the 4D Einstein-Hilbert action to a constant-radius hypersurface of foliation. The resulting theory is a scalar theory defined on a 3D hypersurface of the original black hole background, and has an exponential potential. Once the the hypersurface is located at the Schwarzschild radius, the 3D theory is effectively reduced to a 2D Liouville type theory. We compute {the entropy associated with the hypersurface intrinsic degrees of freedom}, and show that its leading order reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. The subleading terms come in logarithm/inverse powers of the area.
We present a new area law which is associated with the correlator of OPE blocks in higher dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). The area law shows similar behaviour as black hole entropy or geometric entanglement entropy. It includes a leading term which is proportional to the area of the entanglement surface, and a logarithmic subleading term with degree $q$. We extract the UV cutoff independent coefficients and discuss various properties of the coefficients.
It is shown that the asymptotic growth of the microscopic degeneracy of BPS dyons in four-dimensional N=4 string theory captures the known corrections to the macroscopic entropy of four-dimensional extremal black holes. These corrections are subleading in the limit of large charges and originate both from the presence of interactions in the effective action quadratic in the Riemann tensor and from non-holomorphic terms. The presence of the non-holomorphic corrections and their contribution to the thermodynamic free energy is discussed. It is pointed out that the expression for the microscopic …
We compute the microscopic entropy of certain 4 and 5 dimensional extermal black holes which arise for compactification of M-theory and type IIA on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The results agree with macroscopic predictions, including some subleading terms. The macroscopic entropy in the 5 dimensional case predicts a surprising growth in the cohomology of moduli space of holomorphic curves in Calabi-Yau threefolds which we verify in the case of elliptic threefolds.
We present string-theory derivation of the semiclassical entropy of extremal dyonic black holes in the approach based on conformal sigma model (NS-NS embedding of the classical solution). We demonstrate (resolving some puzzles existed in previous related discussions) that the degeneracy responsible for the entropy is due to string oscillations in four transverse dimensions `intrinsic' to black hole: four non-compact directions of the D=5 black hole and three non-compact and one compact (responsible for embedding of magnetic charges) dimensions in the D=4 black hole case. Oscillations in other …
Modifications of the area law are crucial in order to find agreement with microscopic entropy calculations based on string theory, when including contributions that are subleading for large charges. The deviations of the area law are in accord with Wald's proposal for the entropy based on a Noether charge. We discuss this for the case of four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric black holes.
We study the exact entropy of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ black holes in M-theory both from the brane and supergravity points of view. On the microscopic side the degeneracy is given by a Fourier coefficient of the elliptic genus of the dual two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ SCFT and can be extracted via a Rademacher expansion. We show how this expansion is mapped to a modified OSV formula derived by Denef and Moore. On the macroscopic side the degeneracy is computed by applying localization techniques to Sen's quantum entropy functional reducing it to a finite number of integrals. The …
We study the effects of N=4 topological string amplitudes on the entropy of black holes. We analyse the leading contribution associated to six-derivative terms and find one particular operator which can correct the entropy of N=4 black holes. This operator is BPS-like and appears in the effective action of type II string theory on K3 x T^2 or equivalently its heterotic dual on T^6. In both descriptions the leading contribution arises at one-loop, which we calculate explicitly on the heterotic side. We then consider whether this term has any consequences for the entropy of (large) N=4 black hol…
In four-dimensional N=2 compactifications of string theory or M-theory, modifications of the Bekenstein-Hawking area law for black hole entropy in the presence of higher-derivative interactions are crucial for finding agreement between the macroscopic entropy obtained from supergravity and subleading corrections to the microscopic entropy obtained via state counting. Here we compute the modifications to the area law for various classes of black holes, such as heterotic black holes, stemming from certain higher-derivative gravitational Wilsonian coupling functions. We consider the extension to …
In this paper we propose a way of determining the subleading corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy by considering a modified generalized uncertainty principle with two parameters. In the context of modified generalized uncertainty principle, coefficients of the correction terms of black hole entropy are written in terms of combination of the parameters. We also calculate corrections to the Stefan-Boltzman law of Hawking radiation corresponding to modified generalized uncertainty principle. By comparing the entropy with one from black holes in string theory compactified on a …
Macroscopic entropy of an extremal black hole is expected to be determined completely by its near horizon geometry. Thus two black holes with identical near horizon geometries should have identical macroscopic entropy, and the expected equality between macroscopic and microscopic entropies will then imply that they have identical degeneracies of microstates. An apparent counterexample is provided by the 4D-5D lift relating BMPV black hole to a four dimensional black hole. The two black holes have identical near horizon geometries but different microscopic spectrum. We suggest that this discrep…

In the large D limit, and under certain circumstances, it has recently been demonstrated that black hole dynamics in asymptotically flat spacetime reduces to the dynamics of a non gravitational membrane propagating in flat D dimensional spacetime. We demonstrate that this correspondence extends to all orders in a 1/D expansion and outline a systematic method for deriving the corrected membrane equation in a power series expansion in 1/D. As an illustration of our method we determine the first subleading corrections to the membrane equations of motion. A qualitatively new effect at this order i…
We investigate quantum entanglement of gravitational configurations in 3D AdS gravity using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We derive explicit formulas for the holographic entanglement entropy (EE) of the BTZ black hole, conical singularities and regularized AdS$_{3}$. The leading term in the large temperature expansion of the holographic EE of the BTZ black hole reproduces exactly its Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_BH, whereas the subleading term behaves as ln S_BH. We also show that the leading term of the holographic EE for the BTZ black hole can be obtained from the large temperature expansion o…
The string-black hole correspondence is considered in the context of the correspondence principle proposed recently by Horowitz and Polchinski. We demonstrate that the entropy of string states and the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole can be matched including the subleading terms which depend on mass logarithmically. We argue the necessity to include the string interaction (with coupling $g$) in the consideration and propose the $g^2$-dependent modification of the string entropy. The matching of it with the entropy of Schwarzschild black hole is analyzed.
We extend and refine recent results on Renyi entropy in two-dimensional conformal field theories at large central charge. To do so, we examine the effects of higher spin symmetry and of allowing unequal left and right central charges, at leading and subleading order in large total central charge. The result is a straightforward generalization of previously derived formulae, supported by both gravity and CFT arguments. The preceding statements pertain to CFTs in the ground state, or on a circle at unequal left- and right-moving temperatures. For the case of two short intervals in a CFT ground s…
The quantum entropy of the Kerr black hole arising from gravitational perturbation is investigated by using Null tetrad and t Hooftś brick-wall model. It is shown that effect of the gravitonś spins on the subleading correction is dependent of the square of the spins and the angular momentum per unit mass of the black hole, and contribution of the logarithmic term to the entropy will be positive, zero, and negative for different value of $a/r_+$.
We study the universal scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of critical theories in $2+1$ dimensions. We specially consider two fermionic scale-invariant models, free massless Dirac fermions and a model of fermions with quadratic band touching, and numerically study the two-cylinder entanglement entropy of the models on the torus. We find that in both cases the entanglement entropy satisfies the area law and has the subleading term which is a scaling function of the aspect ratios of the cylindrical regions. We test the scaling of entanglement in both the free fermion models using three…
The exact formula derived by us earlier for the entropy of a four dimensional non-rotating black hole within the quantum geometry formulation of the event horizon in terms of boundary states of a three dimensional Chern-Simons theory, is reexamined for large horizon areas. In addition to the {\it semiclassical} Bekenstein-Hawking contribution to the area obtained earlier, we find a contribution proportional to the logarithm of the area together with subleading corrections that constitute a series in inverse powers of the area.
In this paper we consider the generalized uncertainty principle in the tunneling formalism via Hamilton-Jacobi method to determine the quantum-corrected Hawking temperature and entropy for 2+1-dimensional noncommutative acoustic black holes. In our results we obtain an area entropy, a correction logarithmic in leading order, a correction term in subleading order proportional to the radiation temperature associated with the noncommutative acoustic black holes and an extra term that depends on a conserved charge. Thus, as in the gravitational case, there is no need to introduce the ultraviolet c…
We study the large $N$ expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold, $M_3$. Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of $PSL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on $M_3$. Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the …
We use conformal supergravity techniques to study four-derivative corrections in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. We show that the four-derivative Lagrangian for the propagating degrees of freedom of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ gravity multiplet is determined by two real dimensionless constants. We demonstrate that all solutions of the two-derivative equations of motion in the supergravity theory also solve the four-derivative equations of motion. These results are then applied to explicitly calculate the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the two-deriv…
Recent work has shown that local supersymmetry on a spacetime boundary in $\mathcal{N}$-extended AdS supergravity in chiral variables implies coupling to a boundary $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|2)_{\mathbb{C}}$ super Chern-Simons theory. We propose a way to calculate the entropy $S$ for the boundary, in the supersymmetric version of loop quantum gravity, for the minimal case $\mathcal{N}=1$. We calculate the dimensions of the quantum state spaces of $\mathrm{UOSp}(1|2)$ super Chern-Simons theory with punctures, and analytically continue, for fixed quantum super area of the surface, to $\mathrm{OS…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy in the gravity with higher curvature terms dual to d=4 N=2 SCFTs in F-theory using the method proposed in arXiv:1011.5819. The log term of this entanglement entropy reproduces the A-type anomaly of the dual SCFTs in F- theory using the gravity dual with the higher derivative term, which, using the field redefinition, can be transformed to the Gauss-Bonnet term in the subleading order of a derivative expansion. Our analysis shows that the 1/N^2 correction for the central charges should be produced from the gravity including higher derivative terms…
The microscopic formula for the degeneracies of 1/8 BPS black holes in type II string theory compactified on a six dimensional torus can be expressed as a sum of several terms. One of the terms is a function of the Cremmer-Julia invariant and gives the leading contribution to the entropy in the large charge limit. The other terms, which give exponentially subleading contribution, depend not only on the Cremmer-Julia invariant, but also on the arithmetic properties of the charges, and in fact exist only when the charges satisfy special arithmetic properties. We identify the origin of these term…
In this paper we discuss the supersymmetric localization of the 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ off-shell gauged supergravity in the background of the $\textrm{AdS}_4$ neutral topological black hole, which is the gravity dual of the ABJM theory defined on the boundary $\textrm{S}^1 \times \mathbb{H}^2$. We compute the large-$N$ expansion of the supergravity partition function. The result gives the black hole entropy with the logarithmic correction, which matches the previous result of the entanglement entropy of the ABJM theory up to some stringy effects. Our result is consistent with the previous on-shell…
We present a class of exact analytic and static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the semi-classical Einstein equations with Weyl anomaly. The solutions have two branches, one is asymptotically flat and the other asymptotically de Sitter. We study thermodynamic properties of the black hole solutions and find that there exists a logarithmic correction to the well-known Bekenstein-Hawking area entropy. The logarithmic term might come from non-local terms in the effective action of gravity theories. The appearance of the logarithmic term in the gravity side is quite important in the …
We analyze BPS black hole attractors in 4d gauged supergravity in the presence of higher derivative supersymmetric terms, including a Weyl-squared-type action, and determine the resulting corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The near-horizon geometry AdS$_2 \times$S$^2$ (or other Riemann surface) preserves half of the supercharges in $N=2$ supergravity with Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging. We derive a relation between the entropy and the black hole charges that suggests via AdS/CFT how subleading corrections contribute to the supersymmetric index in the dual microscopic picture. Depending o…
We obtain some exact results for black holes in the Randall-Sundrum model with a single brane. We consider an extreme black hole charged with respect to a Maxwell field on the brane. The near-horizon geometry is determined. The induced metric on the brane and the black hole entropy are compared with the predictions of 4d General Relativity. There is good agreement for large black holes, with calculable subleading corrections. As a separate application, the bulk solution provides a gravitational dual for (strongly coupled, large N) N=4 SYM in AdS(2)xS(2) for arbitrary relative size of AdS(2) an…
